about Bash at the Beach nineteen ninety four. This is
Hawk Hogan's in ring debut. With the promotion, we're gonna
talk all about it, and of course we're gonna get
into the current day nonsense. I because there's a lot
of stuff going on in wrestling.

come and gone here in Philly, the Smoky Air has
come and gone in Philly, and the World Cup has
come and gone in Philly, So what's next? Lebron to Philly.

that's also in insane potential potentiality, you know, in that situation there.
But what we do know is gonna happen is Eagle's
training camp is like two weeks away, less than two
weeks away. I think their first practice is on a
twenty eighth. Maybe they report on a twenty eighth, and
I think they may have their first practice on a

little bit of time to breathe in between.

it's been interesting to see like Independence Mall get taken

maybe we're still in the middle of Eagle season and
then were getting ready for Phillies playoffs and never ending
six A training camp.

Don't worry, the Phillies playoffs won't take off that much time.

It's a shame. I mean it's a shame. But look,
deadline is still a thing. The trade deadline is still

they did not think of this series as important, which
is pretty funny if you're looking into it, like just
to pile on the Mets. You know in the season
they're having that you you have a mid July series

right after the All Star break. That doesn't mean anything

Phillies, but right for the big boys.

So that doesn't mean the Dodgers won't can't come in
and win the series early, to sweep them. So you know,

not optimistic.

So well, it is only the first series after the
All Star break. It's doing pretty good. But going into
the All Star break, I think they were on.

It's a long season, and there are some guys that
have had really good seasons up to now and that
are just falling off the face of the earth Man.

series Thursday, Saturday, Sundays.

I don't know, rewrite the season.

obviously matters, but it's not like it should change your
trajectory of your season from.

I feel like if you're riding those emotional waves, you're

are the ones that carry them into the fall. So

any means, but it's just a lot of like I've

like every season is different. I understand that they could
easily go into October play against the Dodgers again in
a five game series and win three of those five games.
But you know, it's tough when you just don't know
what that team's going to look like yet. As we know,

are they really going to look better or they I mean,
are they gonna like look like this? I don't know,
but they need to get healthy. The Brad Keller, their
big acquisition, is gone for the year, so it's.

I want to see another kinner like Michael Lorenzen had

to take the lead, like I want to see that stuff.
We got some of that in the first half of
the season, for sure, but I just want to see that.
I want the those moments. I like those moments in
the course of a season.

they booked for moments these days, we love you. I mean,
if you're booking for moments, you'll fit right in with

I think are talking about coming out of this is
all the interactions we had between Cee Him Punk and
Cody Roads, which spills over into today and we'll talk
about that from the SummerSlam kickoff show as they called
it from fanatics Fest. But if you watched the show,
you saw that Cody Roads and see Him Punk teamed up.

They coexisted, they did and long enough to win a defeat.
I should say Sammy's a and gun through with the
help of Nick All. This who I feel like is
going to be former SmackDown GM I. I haven't watched
the entire segment, but Goonther was thwarted by all this,
and now they have an official match at SummerSlam. Now
Nick All is coming out of retirement to go against

All this has helped Punk and Cody win. But after
the match they have some sallways say, awkward moments together

supposed to be friends.

Even before the match, they had like some friendly sort
of friend of me kind of talk where they're like, yeah,
when I beat him for tied.

see Punk like no, when I beat you, sucker? Very funny.

And then the postmatch happens, yeah.

Well, after the match, there's a video that WW poster
in the social where they have a heated exchange backstage
with Cody's like, yo, what was that?

they're cursing at the cameraman and get this camera out
of here, which I think is honestly I like that

the one breaking this up. I feel like he should

a stadium that seats almost seventy thousand. Now, granted, you know,
the configuration I'm sure will change, but WW doesn't really
do big stages for shows other than WrestleMania anymore, so
i'd imagine they're gonna make a lot of those seats
available as many as possible in the stadium of that size,
and twenty five k ain't the greatest.

You might have to go back to arenas for SummerSlam.

Or they could do MLS stadiums, which I was suggesting
years and years ago when before when we were trying
to advocate for Summer Slim to be an outdoor show,
they put it in football stadium, which, okay, mean more people,
they're bigger, But like.

This would be great for the MLS stadium though that
you want to, you can, you know, run a bunch
of places with MLS stadiums. Now, there's so many teams
in that league who have their own stadiums. So yeah,

I don't know what the Super Root Park would be awesome.

I don't think that would happen, but I can see
it going to like Austin. There's the stadium in Austin,

added temporary seeding to to expanding capacity for the World Cup.

from all these matches, from Roman and Seth to Ospray
and Omega, I think the wrestling is going to be incredible,
but it's just watching it week after week is not easy.

that ww fumbled for whatever reason back in nineteen ninety
two for the World Heavyweight Championship. And I feel like
if I'm WSW and if you have Hogan on the roster,
you don't waste time in giving him a world title opportunity.

You give it to him the first night. And that's
what ww did.

Somehow, WWF is like, nah, we're not going to do
Hogan at Flair for the title on our biggest show
of the year. Ww said, we not wait until Star Kight,
Star Kight today, Bash at the beach. Let's call up
Shaq too, get him down here, all right, because this
was huge, Okay, this is Hawg Cogan, the biggest star

in wrestling, going against the guy who's the biggest star not.

Pretty much the two biggest stars of the eighties going
at it, right, and it's their first like real big match.
They've had interactions with their first real big one on
one match four title pretty much.

And w W said, h let's do it. Then they said,
let's throw some extra gas in that fire by having
Shaq Shaquille O'Neal be a part of the festivities in
this home arena, because let's talk about Shaq real quick, Okay.
Because the reason why it made sense for Shaq to
be on the show obviously because he's a huge star
literally and figuratively, but he also played for the Orlando Magic.

This was his home arena. He had just finished his
second season with the Magic, where he finished second in
the league in scoring with twenty nine point three points
per game.

David Robinson had to score seventy one points in the
season finale, the top Shack that year for the scoring title. Okay,
seventy one, he said, I'm getting the scoring title, sorry, Shaq.
Shaq also finished fourth in MVP voting and was voted
to his second All Star Game and led the Magic
to fifty wins. Sure the Magic, they were swept in

the first round by Regie Miller and the Pacers.

But by this point, Shaq was already a mainstream sensation
even this early in his career, and he was basically

about who Shaq is. But although Hogan received the majority
of the fanfare, and rightfully so, ws W had some

depth on this roster at this point that I don't
think gets enough credit for having that depth at this time.
I don't think ws W had the credit for having
on this card alone. Ricky Steamboat Vade, Steve Austin, Steve Riego,
Paul Orndorf, Cactus Jack, Terry Funk, Bobby Eaton and Moore
and all of that proved to be a recipe for

successful World Championship Wrestling as on this night there were
over fourteen thousand people in the building and the show
was generated. The show generated the most sex like, the
most successful. I can't even talk right, it's so good,
the most successful pay per view in the history of
the entire company, with two hundred and twenty five thousand
buys according to Wressell Nomics. What do you remember about

this time with Hogan making his inn ring debut and
World Championship Wrestling.

I was probably watching my brother and mey on Nickelodeon
on this night.

All like two seasons of it apparently, or one season.

I felt like it was on the air forever.

what made it feel like, Yeah, it was on for

pay per views back then, so and even though July
I was a month that ww did not have a
WWF at the time, didn't have a pay per view
in July, it's not like I probably asked my mom

if she care ordered and she's like, no, can't. So
I was like, oh man, I'm gonna miss it, and
so like I didn't. Really I wasn't like as excited
to see Hal Coogan back then, because again, I'm a
pro WWF guy. So when they gave Brett the title
the first time, I was like, Okay, I'm supposed to
like Brett, so screw the other guys. And then Hal

came back and beat Yoga for the title. I'm like, Okay,
this is weird a little bit, but he's a good guy,
so I'll cheer for him. Yay Hawk's back, you know.
And so and this time Brett is the WWF chap
if you think what it is Owen, you know, they're
about to have their still cage match at SummerSlam the
next month. So I'm like fully like buying into the
new generation stuff on WWF. So I looked at WCW

(38:55):
as like, oh, I've already seen those guys in the WWF,
Like they're just in WCW because they're older. You know,
I've already seen what they can do, and they're like
winning here, you know, Holkogan won the titles, Like I've
seen that before. So I was like watching. I was
like still pro WWF because it's like everything was new
to me, new stars, new matches, like just new, a

(39:20):
new look, you know, the new logo and just the
way they presented the new generation and all this stuff.
Like I was totally in brought into it because I didn't.
I just never thought about turning my back on WWF.
And I was like, yeah, I tried. I tried to
watch both when I could, but if I had to
choose one or the other, it was WWF. And there

(39:41):
were times where my sister would watch, like she got
cable first in her room and she would like have
on WCW Saturday night just to see who was on
there if she could, like because we knew like so
many EXWWF people were going to WCW, and like they
trickled into lit bit like the Guardian Angel. He's like

(40:02):
the biggest thing. I can remember that in that time
period where my sister ran and got me, it was
like the big Boss Man's ww and we ran he's
wearing that hat and everything. I had no idea what
that was. I was like, what the hell's he wearing,
you know, like and he was. He had like a
promo on Saturday Night or whatever, and I was just like, yeah,
like see, like it's not the Big Boss Man. It's

like a different guy. He's like this. They're calling him
the Guardian Angel, like and I didn't know that was
a group at the time either, Like I didn't know
what they stood for. I just thought it was like
another wrestling gimmick. I was like, what the hell, Like,
I was so confused. I was like, this is why
I don't like w CW, because they ruined everything, you know.

Speaker 1 (40:42):
So, I mean, Guardian Angel was worse than a Big
Boss Man. I think we can agree great Trailer was
better with Big Boss Man. I think we can all
agree with that.

Speaker 2 (40:50):
And they went with like different things too, like the
Boss Uh, you know, before he went back to Big
Bubba finally, But you know, at that time, I didn't
know he was Big Bubba prior to that, but before
the Big Boss Man either. So I'm just going off
what I know from the w WF and I just
was like, yeah, Rick Flair, like he was in the
WWF for a year, but then he left because he
wasn't good enough, you know, Like that's how I was

thinking back then, and so this match didn't really mean
as much to me as probably other wrestling fans. So
if I was like really into it, like we need
to get this pay per view, we need to get
this pay per view, my mom might have decided to
and maybe she would have been like, Okay, well we
can't get SummerSlam, or maybe she did give me that option,

(41:34):
and I was just like, oh, yeah, there's no way
I'm missing SummerSlam. So you know it's possibly like that's
possibly the choice I had, But yeah, anything WCW was
not going to win over WWF for me at the time.
And hal Coke can going there and and like everyone
following him there. You know you have to hack dug
in there. Yeah, yeah, I've seen these guys, so familiar guys.

Speaker 1 (41:58):
In He's not familiar to the I don't know. You
were watching Dark Side of the Ring with TNA. It
was really about Jeff Jarrett, but they cover a lot
of TNA in there, and they talked about how him
and Bischoff came in, all all of Hogan's friends came in,
the Nasty Boys. They were first thing smoking to TNA
when he got there. And then you see it again
in WSW, so you see the beginning of it all.

(42:19):
They're all backstage, you know.

So that was like the first time I was really
seeing Like I wasn't even ten years old yet, I
was eight at this time. I'm like, I've already seen
those guys, so, you know, like it was kind of interesting.
And I was the only one that watched wrestling religiously
at that point, like right, my sister tuned in here
and there, but my parents weren't watching like everything. I

didn't have a TV in my room yet, so I
didn't watch WCW on the weekends. I was only able
to watch WWF, you know, the Saturday morning shows, event
RAW because my parents had the TV on those you
know channels. So I didn't have like my own TV yet,
so I had to basically acquas to whatever they were

allowing me to watch.

You were a child, you didn't have control of the TV,
you know that.

Speaker 2 (43:10):
I very rarely watched WCW back then. So, yeah, this
this match, it's funny at the time, I probably couldn't
have cared less. That's all that to say.

I didn't care. It's very roundabout way.

But I might have been like, oh, like I want
to see it live. But then I was like, I'll
just see what happened on Saturday Night or something. That's okay.

Well, it was a big deal still, maybe not to
Nick Pocone, but it was a big deal. And they
had a lot of uh celebrities, and we'll talk about
the people who were there and some of their backgrounds
as well.

But we got on the call for the show.

We got Tony Shavanni, Bobby to bring Heena, and we
start off with me and Jean, who's you know, it's
like a third guy in the field always. But we
also got Jesse even tour for a match on this show,
and I was just like, I don't know if I've
ever seen Bobby, Heenan and Jesse the body in the
same room at the same time, Like I guess, so,
I mean he did call stuff a WWF back in

the day, so I'm like, they never worked in the
same company, but in the booth together that would have
been great, but that didn't happen on this show. Jesse
Ventura was only for one match. He was just up,
cleaned up, very nice. He was not Jesse the body.
He was Jesse the Mayor on this show because at
this point he is the mayor of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
He was elected to that position in nineteen ninety one

and his term ran through nineteen ninety five. Of course,
by ninety eight he was the governor of Minnesota.

death was never ever publicly released, for there are no
Norwood so that's I don't know, but that's what happened
with mister Norwood. Before we got any matches, we actually
got footage of Hogan saving Sting from a fan on
Saturday Night. Well, at least somebody dressed up as a fan,
but it was clearly Sherry just up as a guy

and a blazer and a tie. For some reason, dress
Up came out professional and professional dress to beat up
Sting and I don't know why, but mister t came
out and Sting was injured and couldn't even wrestle on
this show because Hogan's here, Sting step aside for a
night and sit back. But John to be bad will
replace him. Apparently on some show I don't know. Sting

had to crash to scratch Cornya by the way too,
and Bobby Heenen said we should keep an eye out
for him. Just crazy, but of course, per usual, we

It had an overbooked best that I think it needed
for that match. The crowd was on fire for most
of it. They weren't doing the wave during it, which

they did in a tough match. It's all Cocain's debuted.
You had Shack there, Mister T was there, Michael Buffer,
Sherry got involved, Jimmy Hart got involved. Like I don't know,
as far as wrestling matches go, it was like fantastic, fantastic.
That in ring stuff was very good too, Just like

I don't know how, I don't know why they couldn't
have this match in WWF. Really, they had the one
on one match at Madison Square Garden at a house
show in the WWF and Apparently it wasn't good enough
for Vince to give them the okay for WrestleMania. But
if it was anything like this, like there's you know,
this show available out there. I haven't watched it, but

I doubt that match could have been as good as this.
Why not? Maybe that's why I Vince made the call.
But I thought this was a great match just in
ring and out of the ring. So, you know, again overbooked,
but I thought I was really good by WCW ninety

casual watcher of WCW. I did not tune in every

single week, but I tuned in when I was like bored,
you know, like WWF didn't have a Saturday night program,
So you know, whatever I saw on WCW this is
before Nitro too, it was what I had. Like, I
didn't watch much of the WCW ancillary weekend programs, like
the recaps if you will. I don't even know if

they had Addy at that point, but anything I saw
was just from Saturday Saturday Night, So for that, you know,
I thought it was one of the best matches on
the card I had. Stephen Regal Johnny b Bead and
Ricky Seaboat. Steve Alston obviously up there as well. I

liked both of them really, really a lot. And I
had Ricky Seamoat in Austin as my matchup. Like before, I.

But the thing is, the ending was kind of wonky
on that match, and I was like, I had it there,
but I was hesitant, was like, the ending isn't great.
Hopefully something else delivered. And I agree with you, the
main event actually did deliver. That was also my match

I had obviously the anticipation of Hogan Megan his debut.
You had, you know, some of the loudest pops in

But yeah, it was actually one of the better matches
I've seen from Hogan in w's w Yeah.

think it worked on this night with Sherry taking all
the bumps and she tried to do a dive off

The other three guys, literally the other three people involved

personality slash comedians okay, and I guess out of promotion
for this show, they got to have a dark match

where they are literally tripping over themselves in the ring
in front of rows of empty seats. And the thing is,
these people were pretty famous. I'm not gonna knock who
they were. It's just clearly WW dis some promotion with
these guys, and they gave these guys a match on

this era of WCW I enjoy just because I think
he's hugely underrated aspect. I remember tuning in when I
would tune in to WCW around this time, like in
the mid nineties, before he before he came into WWF,
I hated Steve Regle just because he was so good
that making people hate him, Like he was the guy

I hated to watch, not that I would turn the channel,
but I would want someone to beat his s you know,
and he had some pretty high profile matches. Dude Stein
was supposed to be his opponent tonight tonight at Batch
of the Beat, so you know, he he was not
a main event player, but he was like upper mid
card to mid card, and I thought he easily could

have probably slotted into a main event level talent if
you know, Hogan never came and they didn't have, you know,
the top heavy roster that they would eventually have. Uh,
maybe Regal could have slotted up there as a top

bad one, and I think Johnny B. Bad was real good.

I guess because it's like this is on a Sunday.
I'm guessing. No, not now, So, yeah, Saturday night is
their big weekly show. So what's gonna happen on Saturday Night?
It's just Bobby Heenen man, he just he always had

to mention, like the next show, what's gonna happen? If
it was thunder it would be what's gonna happen on Thunder?
Don't worry about my tro because we're all he's gonna
tear it to shreds. But but yeah, it was a
Bobby heatter Man always hype in the next show whatever
