(01:07):
Valley, really, and we'remeeting someone from Monrovia
today.
We're learning more about whatfood and drinks are out there
and what businesses we can gosupport, because that is the
whole point.
In front of us today I haveAlejandro and Brandon.
They are from Mama's Juicery inMonrovia.
Welcome, gentlemen.

Brandon Martinez (01:28):
Thank you, hello, thank you.

Karen Mac Nair (01:30):
I am excited to learn about your business.
I've got a lot of greatquestions for you, so we're
going to jump right in.
Why don't you tell us a littlebit about your business?

Alejandro Carvajal (01:39):
Well, we're called Mama's Juicery.
We're a cold-pressed juice bar.
We're right there on Myrtle,Old Town, Monrovia, Myrtle and
Olive.
We're family owned and operated.
A Latina owned business.

Karen Mac Nair (01:50):
Love that Now.
Is there any other locations?

Alejandro Carvajal (01:54):
Yes, we have two other ones.
We have one in Baldwin Parkright down the 605.

Karen Mac Nair (02:05):
And then we have one that's pretty far all the
way in Murrieta about two hoursoh, wow, yeah, that's a trek.

Alejandro Carvajal (02:07):
So if you're driving and you're going
somewhere the casino.

Karen Mac Nair (02:08):
If you're going to san diego, you can stop by.
Okay, I'm excited to hear aboutthis.
The um business in monrovia.
Hours of operations.
When can I come visit you?

Brandon Martinez (02:16):
that one is open from seven days a week, and
the only day that we close latewould be on Fridays from 7 am
to 10 pm, and then any other dayis from 7 am to 9 pm.

Karen Mac Nair (02:28):
And that's because the street fair, I'm
assuming.
So when you're walking aroundthe street fair, you can get.
I have the luxury of seeing thenames, but you can get a little
energy or detox when you'rewalking by.

Brandon Martinez (02:39):
We also do samples there.
Oh, you do do samples.

(03:00):
They go and try it.
We offer it as a sample andthey just are surprised by the
taste, because it's the mostgreenest one we have.

Karen Mac Nair (03:06):
Yeah isn't that amazing.
I feel like growing up as a kidlike the green vegetables are
the ones we didn't like yes andthen you see a green juice and
you're like, is it going to bemy favorite?
And it, it can be yeah, justthat, go green.

Alejandro Carvajal (03:17):
It's all, all the veggies that you can
think of, and the only fruit ithas is cucumber oh, oh, really.
Yeah, so it's a really, reallygreen juice.

Karen Mac Nair (03:25):
And quite refreshing, then, with the
cucumber flavors in it.
Wow.
So with the juices they're 100%juice.

Alejandro Carvajal (03:32):
Yeah, they're cold-pressed.
So we have a big machine inthere.
It's called a ZoomX MasteryMachine, so it's called a
cold-pressed.
It presses all of the juice outof everything.
Wow, from spinach to cucumber, pineapple presses everything out
.

Karen Mac Nair (03:47):
It's 100 juice that is amazing yeah, so none of
our juices have any water inthem, okay that was going to be
my question, if there was anywater base.
No, it's just all the naturaljuices that are in it.
Wow, do you find, if it's acertain season, certain juices
are more popular.

Alejandro Carvajal (04:06):
Yes, Okay, in the summer, I would say more
of the juices that have likewatermelon, pineapple, the ones
that have like a higher watercontent, like the cucumber, the
watermelon.
And then during the winterpeople look for the milks.
We also have milks.
We have like almond milk.
We have a cashew milk, and thenwe have a cashew almond milk
with cacao in it.

Karen Mac Nair (04:26):
So do you make the milks there?

Alejandro Carvajal (04:27):
Yes, we do those too.
Those are also cold pressed aswell.
Oh wow, yeah.

Karen Mac Nair (04:31):
Okay, I keep offering ideas.
That's an.

Alejandro Carvajal (04:34):
Instagram video if I haven't watched it.
And shots too.
Oh really, yeah, ginger shotsturmeric wheatgrass.

Karen Mac Nair (04:39):
Okay.
So if you, If you're startingto feel like I might have been
under the weather a little bit, getting a couple ginger shots
and some wheatgrass would reallyhelp burst that energy back up.
So what was the inspiration forowning this business, being
part of this business?

Alejandro Carvajal (04:56):
So my mom is Mama.

Karen Mac Nair (04:59):
Okay, what a great name.

Alejandro Carvajal (05:02):
Her inspiration was basically taking
a classic, like a classicMexican bionicle spot, mixing it
with like a press juicery, andthen including all the acai
bowls, the smoothies, so it'sall that in one.

Karen Mac Nair (05:15):
Oh wow.

Alejandro Carvajal (05:16):
So we have something for everybody.
You know, we have, like fresascon crema ambionicos, we have
cold pressed juice, we havesmoothies shots, anything you
can think of.

Karen Mac Nair (05:25):
Wow, and it's all at the one location All at
the one location.
That's amazing.
Did she grow up having thispassion?
Was it something?

Alejandro Carvajal (05:34):
No, my dad had a.
He still has his Mexicanrestaurant in LA.
Okay, and my mom was in chargeof the fruit spot, a little
corner selling fruits and makingjuices and from that I guess
she got the inspiration and sheopened her own spot here in
Monrovia.

Karen Mac Nair (05:49):
It's so smart, just because we don't realize
the healing powers of fruits, the energy powers of fruits, how
much it can help us Spirit mindand body really in all of us.

Alejandro Carvajal (05:59):
My mom is really really big on that.
If you ever talk to her, she'sreally really big on mind,
spirit and body.
Okay, cool, and just you knowyou are what you eat.

Karen Mac Nair (06:06):
Yeah Well, I'm going to taste it in a few
minutes, but I see it in herproducts.
Like, really, it is abouttaking care of our whole health.
Yep what is some way that wecan support your business.
As we're a community, we wantto give back to small businesses
Any ideas of ways we cansupport you.

Alejandro Carvajal (06:25):
I would say, just come in, you know, buy a
juice, buy a smoothie andhonestly, what we've seen that's
been really effective is justposting on social media tagging
us on.
Instagram on TikTok.
It has really helped us overthe past maybe year and a half.
Oh, wow, Okay.

Karen Mac Nair (06:41):
So it's tell a friend, but even more than just
verbal, on social media isreally powerful, yeah, nowadays,
so wow okay, I love that.
So go out, try it, post tag andthen tell a friend and buy a
ginger shop for someone.
So this is your first year attaste of arcadia, right, I'm so

(07:02):
excited you guys are there um.
One of our staff members, joseluis, I know has been very
persistent but it's been ourdesire to really have some good
juices.
It's gonna.
It's september 13th, so I feela warm day coming on in the
afternoon and that there's goingto be a long line for you guys.
Why don't you any ideas whichjuices you're taking, what
you're thinking?

Alejandro Carvajal (07:22):
For sure the Maximus.

Karen Mac Nair (07:23):
And the Aztec juice.

Alejandro Carvajal (07:25):
Those are our best sellers.

Karen Mac Nair (07:26):
Okay, so the Maximus.
What is in that juice?

Alejandro Carvajal (07:29):
That one is beets, carrots, cucumber, lemon.
Red and green apple gingerturmeric lime and orange juice.

Brandon Martinez (07:37):
Okay yeah.

Karen Mac Nair (07:38):
It is a wonderful red, bright red color,
very rich in color.
Is there a goal that you'retrying to reach with this one?
Does it help a certain part ofour bodies?

Brandon Martinez (07:50):
So it actually does help a lot with weight
loss and with high bloodpressure.

Karen Mac Nair (07:56):
I'll take five, so it's really good yeah.
So the beets and ginger isreally what makes the difference
.

Alejandro Carvajal (08:02):
Yes, it's also anti-inflammatory as well,
oh nice Ginger and turmeric.

Karen Mac Nair (08:06):
Okay, I'd love that.
And tell me a little bit aboutthe Aztec.

Alejandro Carvajal (08:09):
The Aztec, that one's the prickly pear or
the cactus pear, however youknow it as, so that one has a
red and green version of that, and then it has a pineapple,
ginger and lemon.
Uh, that one's also really goodfor inflammation okay, it's
good for the digestion as welloh nice, that one.

Karen Mac Nair (08:24):
I noticed that the base it's.
It's almost like a mixed drink,like it's got a nice orange
base and then turns red.
So then you shake it up to geteverything all yeah.

Brandon Martinez (08:34):
So once it settles down, everything just
goes.
This would just be like theginger settled down.

Karen Mac Nair (08:38):
Oh the ginger.

Alejandro Carvajal (08:40):
Okay, it's a beautiful rainbow color yeah,
it's really, it's a reallypretty color um, is there
anything else about yourbusiness you wanted to share
with us?
Uh, we just launched our, ourwebsite, mamasjuicerycom, so we
have the pickup orders there andthen we're releasing the
cleanses.
So six-pack, one day juices andthen we have a one day, three

(09:01):
day, five day, um.
So those are all coming outwithin the next week or so.
Um, we have gotten ordersalready.
We have one right now.
It's the beginner okay um, butwe're gonna have like a green
one.
We're gonna have the bestsellers package if we have a six
pack of celery.
We have a six pack of this oneright here, the mama's detox,
okay, and then monrovia isgetting a little bit bigger of a
menu.
We're.
We have a six pack of this oneright here, the mama's detox,
okay, and then monrovia isgetting a little bit bigger of a

(09:23):
menu we're gonna have saladsand toast like avocado toast
okay, now you're talking toastthat's coming, all coming pretty
soon so now big question happyhour.

Karen Mac Nair (09:36):
do you have any happy hour specials?
Yes, which I know is a weirdquestion to ask you guys, sorry
this is a juicery.
But I'm just feeling like, isthere a happy hour special?

Alejandro Carvajal (09:43):
Yeah, we do have a happy hour.
It's 7.50 for an orange juiceand a ginger shot before 12 pm.
So it's all morning.

Karen Mac Nair (09:52):
It's morning happy hour.
See folks, you can also have anexciting morning.
You don't have to wait tillafter work.
You start your day off rightwith a little energy, a little
ginger shot, your little morninghappy hour.
It makes the day more sparkly.

Brandon Martinez (10:07):
It does and you feel good.

Karen Mac Nair (10:08):
Yeah, that is great.
Okay, I also see in front of methe All Star.

Alejandro Carvajal (10:14):
Yeah.

Karen Mac Nair (10:14):
What is in that one?

Alejandro Carvajal (10:16):
It's an orange color, that one's carrots
, red and green, apple, lemonand ginger.

Karen Mac Nair (10:20):
okay, yeah, it's beautiful yeah and then the
detox you've been talking aboutquite a bit.
Yes, what's in that one againremind me that one has aloe vera
, coconut water, cucumber andpineapple with lemon okay, it's
really hydrating with thecoconut water okay, especially
right now, with the heat and thetemperature changing we know
it's going to be warm the nextcouple months.

(10:40):
I always feel like that is agreat way to hydrate and
especially sometimes I feel likewhen you drink water it's great
for our bodies.
Don't anyone comment that it'snot great.
It's wonderful for our bodies,we all love it but you feel like
sometimes you need just alittle more.
Yes, and it sounds like thedetox would really help take you
to that spot to help hydrateand really make it some.
Just a splash, a little splashof hydration.

(11:00):
So an angelus is that or age soI'm looking at sideways ageless
.
What's in the ageless?

Alejandro Carvajal (11:08):
that one's pineapple, cucumber, green apple
, spinach and mint okay, hasyour mom perfected this ageless?
Yeah, you see my mom, she, she's, uh, my mom's about to be
50 and she looks no older than30.

Karen Mac Nair (11:19):
Oh, I love that, okay, and that name my dad came
up with it.
Oh, he did.

Alejandro Carvajal (11:23):
Well, my dad has came up with most of the
names.
He's really like reallycreative with the names.

Karen Mac Nair (11:28):
I love that.
And the Energizer that one is.
It's not the bunny, it's adrink, so that one has pineapple
, turmeric and orange juice, andLime.

Brandon Martinez (11:43):
Lime.

Karen Mac Nair (11:43):
Lime.
Okay, I see a comment likethere's something about the
citrus with different, like asweet fruits with a little tangy
.
There's definitely a blend.
How do you come up with whatthe combination is going to be?

Alejandro Carvajal (11:56):
well, it takes us a couple, a couple days
.
We we sample it.
Um, we'll try it out.
Um, like, right now we have thea new juice.
It's called laguna and thatone's really, really pretty
color.
It's like a turquoise so thatone has pineapple, we're looking
at green apple or pear, andthen it has lemon, ginger and
blue spirulina.
Oh, so that one has pineapple,we're looking at green apple or
pear, and then it has lemon, ginger and blue spirulina.
Oh so that one.

(12:16):
It comes out a really prettycolor.

Brandon Martinez (12:17):
We're just seeing how what our recipe was
going to be okay, we had to messaround and find out what we
like with it.

Karen Mac Nair (12:23):
Yeah so does your mom let inspiration come
from staff also?
Okay, yeah, I love that thestaff is also family and friends
.

Alejandro Carvajal (12:31):
So yay everybody gets in on it it and
it's really fun to bring out anew juice.

Karen Mac Nair (12:37):
And lots of trying your experiments.

Alejandro Carvajal (12:39):
Yeah.

Karen Mac Nair (12:39):
Okay, so you have to tell me what was one
that did not go as positively asyou would think.

Alejandro Carvajal (12:46):
Well, recently.
So we have this new one calledthe Beetle right, it's beet,
strawberry, watermelon, uh andgrape yeah okay, and strawberry
as well.
And so brandon was saying let'sput ginger in it, because beets
and ginger goes really well.
And he what did you try with itwas beets, strawberry,
watermelon and ginger.

(13:06):
So ginger instead of grape andnobody liked it no bueno yeah.

Brandon Martinez (13:11):
Like somehow the grape was the one that made
it.

Alejandro Carvajal (13:16):
Yeah.

Brandon Martinez (13:17):
Tastes really good.

Karen Mac Nair (13:18):
Isn't that well, that's incredible.
Yeah, so do you have like basefruits that are important to
have in each one, or just anycombination?

Alejandro Carvajal (13:28):
No, we like to make a combination of
everything we like to have likea flavor palette for everybody,
believe it or not.
Some people like the reallyreally green juices, and then we
also have really sweet ones.
We have some that havestrawberry, raspberry, peach,
mango guava, we have reallysweet ones.

Karen Mac Nair (13:50):
So right now is probably the great time, because
fruit season.
Oh yeah, I feel like it's peakright now, the other day I was
just eating like snacking onwatermelon for that reason, just
feeling like you neededhydration and you just wanted a
little something, so I could seehow going to you guys could
really help.

Brandon Martinez (14:07):
We have a summer drink which is watermelon
, strawberry, orange andpineapple.

Alejandro Carvajal (14:13):
It's really good.
Yeah, that was the juice of themonth last month.

Brandon Martinez (14:17):
That's another thing about us.
We have juices of the month.
So each month we rotate one ofthe juices from the fridge and
we make that specific juice thejuice of the month.

Alejandro Carvajal (14:25):
And it'll usually be seasonal produce that
we put into it.
Just because we get our producelocally.
So, it'll be like a seasonal, like the summer.
You know, the watermelon andthe strawberry were in season,
so that became our juice of themonth.

Karen Mac Nair (14:37):
So do you announce on Instagram, TikTok,
your juice of the month.
We will oh nice, okay, sofollow, you guys Follow us, and
then you can get updates rightthere.

Brandon Martinez (14:45):
And then also the price is half off for the
bottle.

Karen Mac Nair (14:49):
Ooh for the juice of the month.
So even if you don't know, I'mjust saying you should probably
try it out that month.
Try it out, see what yourfavorites are yeah, okay,
another idea I have freeze theminto little ice cubes and then
you can have them in your drinkslater.
Yeah, yeah.

Alejandro Carvajal (15:03):
That can work too.

Karen Mac Nair (15:03):
You can freeze them.
Yeah, you can do that.
Sorry.
Now I'm thinking, hmm, howcould I turn this into a
wonderful drink?
Okay, I feel like we need tostart tasting a few, if that's
okay with you.
Which?

Alejandro Carvajal (15:16):
one would you like to try?

Karen Mac Nair (15:17):
I'm going to jump in.
Let me try the detox to startAll right here you go.

Brandon Martinez (15:21):
Okay, just shake.

Karen Mac Nair (15:22):
Okay, so they're handing me this bottle.
I love it that they're allbranded.
They have your beautiful logoon it the design.
So is that your mom's cute face, or supposed to be?

Alejandro Carvajal (15:33):
It's supposed to be.

Karen Mac Nair (15:38):
Inspired by, with a wonderful hair of fruits
and vegetables.
Okay, shaking it up.
It's a cold press detox 100%organic, no preservatives.
Oh, that's important.
Shake well.
Separation is natural.
That's my teacher voice, didyou like that?
Right here, just to sayseparation is natural.
Do not be teacher voice.
Did you like that?
Right here.
Separation is natural.
Do not be alarmed, just shakeit up.
Okay, this is a detox.

(15:59):
Taking a drink Ooh, that's sogood.

Alejandro Carvajal (16:08):
It's a little sour.

Karen Mac Nair (16:10):
Pineapple Banana Is there banana?

Alejandro Carvajal (16:12):
in it.
No, there's no banana Am.

Brandon Martinez (16:14):
I making it up now.
Now you want to make your ownginger, I know.

Karen Mac Nair (16:17):
Now I'm so inspired about making it so I
definitely taste the pineapple.

Alejandro Carvajal (16:21):
Yeah.

Karen Mac Nair (16:22):
Is there ginger in this one?

Alejandro Carvajal (16:23):
No, I'm really making it up now, okay,
tell me what's in it.

Karen Mac Nair (16:27):
You're imagining stuff?
Okay, tell.

Alejandro Carvajal (16:28):
Pineapple, cucumber, lemon, aloe vera and
coconut water and coconut water.

Karen Mac Nair (16:34):
It is good yeah.

Alejandro Carvajal (16:36):
Really good.
Yeah, it's one of the bettersellers.

Karen Mac Nair (16:39):
So when you said you're going to do a detox pack
, there'll be smaller bottles.

Alejandro Carvajal (16:45):
No, there'll be those this size yeah.

Karen Mac Nair (16:47):
And then anything else with it.

Alejandro Carvajal (16:49):
You mentioned a bit.
Right now we're looking at justa six-pack of juices you
mentioned.
Right now we're looking at, uh,just a six pack of juices, and
then those will be like the, theintroductory ones, and then
we're gonna have like a biggerone that'll have either four or
five juices, and then I'll havea couple of shots as well oh,
nice, yeah, and this bottle is16 ounces.

Karen Mac Nair (17:05):
I just want to tell everyone this is a nice 16
ounce bottle so you can take iton the go yep with you, yeah
which is great.
So will you, do you want totell me what your favorites are
and try those with me, so I'mnot drinking alone?
I don't have a friend drink byherself.

Brandon Martinez (17:20):
My personal favorite is our Maximus juice
which is beets, carrots, cucumber, red and green apple,
ginger, turmeric, lime andorange juice.
Just go ahead and drink it.

Karen Mac Nair (17:29):
Oh, you want me to try it for you?

Alejandro Carvajal (17:31):
Shake it up.

Karen Mac Nair (17:31):
Okay, shake it up, shake it up.
Yep, I'm going to start singing, I'm going to smell it first.
Ooh Lime.

Alejandro Carvajal (17:45):
Lemon.

Karen Mac Nair (17:46):
Lime, I got it right that time, you guys.

Brandon Martinez (17:50):
I'm sure I brought the Revive.

Alejandro Carvajal (17:52):
Oh God or the new booster.

Karen Mac Nair (17:56):
Okay, so good smooth yeah, really smooth that
one's a

Brandon Martinez (18:00):
local favorite in Monrovia for sure, yeah,
it's our top seller okay, loveit.

Karen Mac Nair (18:05):
I see why taking a second drink.
Is there a vegetable in here?

Alejandro Carvajal (18:13):
yes, what is it?

Karen Mac Nair (18:14):
uh, beets and carrots okay, the beets, that's
what I taste.
It tastes delicious, thoughit's got a sweet taste to it.
Yeah, yeah, that's goodprobably from the apples, oh
apples and orange juice okay, you guys, if I did a blind test,
I could not guess I wouldtotally fail.
But but it's delicious.
Okay, one more.

Alejandro Carvajal (18:35):
One more.
What's the next one?
What's your favorite?
I would say the Aztec.
I would say the Aztec.

Karen Mac Nair (18:39):
The.

Alejandro Carvajal (18:39):
Aztec is pretty cool.

Karen Mac Nair (18:43):
I'm shaking it up.
This one has turmeric in it,right.

Alejandro Carvajal (18:48):
No, that one has ginger.
You know what we could do.

Karen Mac Nair (18:55):
The turmeric this was energizer that one has,
guys.
Oh well, you at least you knowI'm being honest.
A quick guessing, oh good, yeahreally good a zing.
At the end, what's the zing?

Alejandro Carvajal (19:13):
Maybe the ginger.

Karen Mac Nair (19:14):
The ginger yeah.

Brandon Martinez (19:16):
Ginger and lemon.

Karen Mac Nair (19:17):
I love that.

I haven't had the others yet,but I can see why.
Yeah, mmm.

Brandon Martinez (19:32):
Very good.

Karen Mac Nair (19:39):
You can sample more at the store.
Thank you and it's nice to knowthat everyone can go and sample
.
Yeah, you don't have to walk inand make and make a commitment
yet you can try something newsample it.
Yep, and I'm gonna say this toeverybody out there don't judge
what you think something's gonnataste like.
Taste it, then hear what's init.

Alejandro Carvajal (19:54):
Another thing is the smell.
Of some juices are a littleiffy.

Karen Mac Nair (19:59):
The flavors are good.
The flavor is good.

Alejandro Carvajal (20:01):
We have one that's called the Revive, and
that one's really, really greenand it also has a kick of garlic
.

Karen Mac Nair (20:07):
It smells like garlic, but when you drink it,
of course you taste a little bitof garlic, but you taste
everything else and it's prettygood when you drink it, of
course you taste a little bit ofgarlic, but you taste
everything else and it's prettygood Because, even like with the
beet aspect of it, if someonehad told me a beet was in it, I
might be like before I taste it,but after tasting it you just
know that they're.
Yeah, you don't.
It's just got a great flavor.
You know that something's in it, but don't let your mind mess

(20:28):
with your taste buds.
Have your taste buds go first.
Yes, is your taste buds?
No, have your taste buds to gofirst.
Yes is the big takeaway.
Um well, thank you so much forbeing here.
I can't believe we're alreadyat the end of the podcast.
Is there anything else youwanted to share just before we
go?
I don't want to miss out onanything um baldwin park.

Alejandro Carvajal (20:45):
Our baldwin park location, which is our

Paper Ghosts: The Texas Teen Murders

Paper Ghosts: The Texas Teen Murders

Paper Ghosts: The Texas Teen Murders takes you back to 1983, when two teenagers were found murdered, execution-style, on a quiet Texas hill. What followed was decades of rumors, false leads, and a case that law enforcement could never seem to close. Now, veteran investigative journalist M. William Phelps reopens the file — uncovering new witnesses, hidden evidence, and a shocking web of deaths that may all be connected. Over nine gripping episodes, Paper Ghosts: The Texas Teen Murders unravels a story 42 years in the making… and asks the question: who’s really been hiding the truth?
