I'm on Instagram, professor JayRod, and I'm on LinkedIn, not

I just wanted to.
You know this is the end of theyear, so I figured you know
there's a lot of people.
A happy holidays everyone, bythe way.
(01:50):
But as the end of the yearapproaches, you know I know
there are people out there whoare thinking about making a
career change.
Right, they want to start 2024with a whole new state of mind.
They want to be able to go into2024, you know, with certain
goals and probably what some ofthe certain goals is changing
(02:13):
your career, and I know this istough and you know it might be a
little bit of a sticky topicfor some people, but I know what
it's like to want to changeyour careers.
You know, and I did it late.
You know, like as everyone youknow, you do it late.
You, I was in my 40s when Idecided to change to academia
(02:40):
and I was actually inspired bysomeone who who told me that
that this is what I should do, Ishould go and be a teacher,
because she saw the potentialthat I have to to become an
educator, and I know this.
Those of you who are listeningto this, who are at home wanting
to do the same thing changeyour careers and then, but then
(03:01):
there's certain things thatyou're worried about.
I know one of the biggestthings that I hear from people
are you know how I'm gonnachange my career if I'm X years
old, right, especially, you know, people are over 40, over 50,
who are worried am I gonna gethired by somebody?
(03:23):
If I'm, you know, if I'm thatold and I gotta be honest with
you age there is an age orageism discrimination.
I've that's has happened to mewhere I applied for a tech
position in a well-known NewYork City hospital and went
(03:48):
through the first interview, went through the second
interview.
It was great.
The guy who's gonna be, who'sthe manager?
He said man, everything looksgreat.
You know, all you have to do istalk to the, to the boss, and
you know she should.
You know you should getapproval.
He said it's gonna be a pieceof cake.
(04:09):
I went in there and the ladytold me that she was gonna do me
a favor.
And I she looked at my resume.
She goes I'm gonna do yourfavor.
And then I stood there and Iwas like okay, what's the favor?
She goes I'm not gonna hire you.
And I'm thinking to myself, howis that a favor?
And then she explained she saidyou know you're better than
(04:33):
this.
She said I'm looking at yourresume and this job that you
reply for is not for you.
You need to be in a higherlevel position.
She says, you know, there'sjust, it's just a different
skill set that I'm looking forat this, at this job, and you're
(04:54):
past it.
So in a way I felt, you know, kind of proud because you know
it kind of gave me the, you knowthe, the, the knowledge that
the jobs that I'm playing for,the jobs that I'm interviewing
for, you know our maybe not jobsfor me, as far as the level
(05:17):
that I'm at, right, becausesometimes you don't have
confidence.
You know, I didn't have thatmuch confidence at that time
that I could do I.
You know that I can do morethan what I thought I could.
Right, I always thought, ohyeah, this is what I could do.
I can't do more than this.
Turns out that I could andthat's what.
(05:40):
So her telling me that Kind ofinspired me.
It says you know what?
I'm not gonna apply for thesetype of jobs anymore.
I'm actually gonna apply forjobs that are higher, jobs that
have more responsibility, jobsthat pay more.
Those were the jobs that Iwould.
I decided that I was gonnaapply.
Fortunately I I met someoneteacher of mine who told me that
(06:05):
you know, my, the best way togo is to go through academia.
And I started just teaching.
You know, come to your classesa security plus, a plus right.
And then I went to.
I Was a long-term New York Citypublic schools substitute
(06:27):
teacher.
I taught the third grade andThen I graduated and then this
was the last six months of meattending Getting my master's in
cyber.
So I taught a plus.
I thought I was long-term subNew York City, I was teaching
(06:48):
third graders and Then I wentand became.
I got a job at Lincoln Tech,part-time during the day, again
teaching a plus, and I kind ofRealized I kind of had a knack
for it when I got 13 out of the17 students but I had to pass
(07:09):
the a plus.
It was so, it was.
So.
You know, there were otherteachers were so upset that I
got 13 out of 17 that they wrotean email to the, to the head of
the school, accusing me of ofTeaching the students how to
(07:32):
cheat.
They were like there's no wayhe got 13 out of 17 and I did.
It's just by studying and beingaggressive and and believing in
them, you know, and motivatingthem.
Right, you know, it's it.
It does a lot when, when youhave somebody who believes in
you, as opposed to somebodywho's just sitting there and
(07:53):
Saying, okay, did you do this?
Oh, you didn't do it, okay next, you know it's a big difference
, right, it's just I find thatif the students like you,
they'll do almost anything toyou know, to keep you happy, you
know to to you know, have thatthat relationship with you.
So I worked there and I alsoGot a job at this other school
(08:22):
Teaching security plus on theweekends, and then I went and
had junked at the school that Igraduated from, they let me
teach a couple of classes.
So I was running around all dayand then I did that for like a
year and then, you know, Idecided I needed to get a like a
full-time job with benefits andstuff, now that I wasn't making
(08:45):
good money.
I was, you know, running aroundand all day Was still making
good money, but I just wanted ajob with benefits and stuff.
So you know, that's importantto have became a high school
teacher and and Newark lovedthat place.
Shout out to my students inNewark.
Then I applied for my currentjob as an adjunct and when I got
(09:11):
there they said hey, we have afull-time position open, you
should apply.
I applied and it was a longprocess.
I got it.
You know, I just made, I justgot tenure.
So it's.
You know it's been a very, veryhumbling experience Doing what
I do, but you know I want to letyou guys know that you guys can
(09:34):
do it too, right, you know.
