What if the moment that changed the church’s future could reshape your next step today? We dive into Acts 2 and watch Pentecost ignite a movement: a roaring wind, tongues like fire, and the gospel proclaimed in the languages of a crowded Jerusalem. Confusion gives way to clarity as Peter stands up—not the man who denied Jesus, but a witness transformed by the Spirit—anchoring the moment in Joel’s prophecy and David’s promise and pointing straight to the risen Christ.

We walk through the heart of Peter’s message: Jesus’ life was authenticated by miracles, his death was no accident, and his resurrection broke death’s grip. The crowd asks the only question that matters—“What shall we do?”—and Peter’s answer still opens the door today: repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Three thousand respond, and the church takes its first breath as a Spirit-filled community with a clear center and a wide welcome.

From there, the blueprint of a healthy church comes into focus: devotion to the apostles’ teaching, real fellowship, shared meals and the Lord’s Supper, persistent prayer, radical generosity, and a steady sense of awe. Public gatherings and house tables both matter. Needs are met, joy is visible, and the Lord adds daily to their number. We connect that early pattern to our present lives, showing how the Spirit forms character through the fruit of the Spirit and empowers service through spiritual gifts, turning ordinary people into bold witnesses who speak in the language of their neighbors’ hearts.

If this conversation stirs a hunger for a simpler, stronger church—and a braver, Spirit-led life—join us. Subscribe, share with a friend who’s exploring faith, and leave a review to help others find the show. What’s your “perfect church” ingredient? We’d love to hear it.

(00:22):
And man, this is where we just, there's just no going back from
here.
This one's going to be amazing.
We're going to learn about whenthe Holy Spirit descends upon
the church.
Peter's going to tell it like itis.
I mean, he ain't going to messaround.
And then we get to see thisseason of just what I think of
as the perfect, the perfectseason as a church.
And my hope for all of us as apastor.

(00:44):
We're going to get to that injust a moment.
But as always, if you like whatwe're doing here, I want you to

I want to ask you to continue todo that as we are just working
on growing this just idea ofgathering and rallying around
God's Word.
If you listen to the podcast, please leave us a five-star

(01:05):
review.
It really does help us.
And I would love for you to goto the Bible breakdown
discussion on Facebook, it'sFacebook group, and just let me
know.
Like, let me know what is yourperfect idea of a church.
When you think of like a church, what is your perfect idea?
You're going to get to see mineat the bottom of this.
And it's my dream for us as achurch that we would see this

(01:28):
happen in our generation.
But we got to get there first.
First, I want to kind of remindyou about what's going on.
So remember, Luke, theinvestigative journalist that
wrote the gospel of Luke, and hewent throughout the countryside
as an observer to see about thestories of Jesus.
Well, in this context, he is notonly telling the story, but he's

(01:49):
living the story as well.
And what he said in the lastchapter is, man, Theopolis, I
just got through telling youabout all the things that Jesus
began to do and teach.
Oh, we just getting started.
Because that's what Acts is allabout.
It's it's all about the birth ofthe early church and then
spreading the gospel.
And as I was telling youyesterday, to me, the overall

(02:11):
theme of Acts is this that ifyou were voted most likely to
succeed, you are voted as thebest in your class and someone
who always gets it right, I'vegot good news for you.
God can still use you.
But you know what he likelydoes?
Most likely, most often, he usesthe least likely to succeed.
He uses the ordinary, he usesthose that nobody else would

(02:32):
have chosen.
But what he does is amazingthings.
And if God can use ordinaryfishermen and a used up Pharisee
that we're going to eventuallymeet named Paul, man, he changed
the world with them.
And if he can do that with them, what can he do with all of us?
And what we're going to look attoday is the beginning of it
all.
And so it's going to be in threesections.

(02:52):
First, we're going to talk abouthow the Holy Spirit comes down
at the day of Pentecost.
And then we're going to look atthe sermon that Peter preached.
And he'll mess around.
He tells them like it is.
And then we get to see my ideaof a perfect church.
Now, first of all, I'm going toget into just a tiniest little
bit of theology when it comes tothe Holy Spirit, because
sometimes there's a little bitof confusion when it comes to

(03:16):
how do we relate to God asFather, Son, and Spirit.
Now, I'm going to give you avery, very brief high uh just
kind of overview.
And I would encourage you to goto look at some different
places.
Go to my website and you can seesome different resources that
are there for you to dig deeperin this if you're interested.
But I want you to understand howthis works.
Most all analogies, metaphors, examples are going to fall apart

(03:40):
at some point when describingGod, because God is
unsearchable.
God is unknowable.
He is beyond everything.
And so this is not going to beperfect.
But one of the ways I've heardpeople describe God to help us
understand how Father, Son, andSpirit all work together is like
the sun, the S-U-N.
You have the big burning thingin the sky, right?

(04:02):
That's one aspect of the sun.
But then you also have the lightof the sun.
Then you also have the heat ofthe sun.
All three equal the sun.
You can't have one without theother.
Same thing with the father, son,and spirit.
Just like how you have abaseball team that has many
different players that havedifferent positions on the
field, it's one team.

(04:23):
These are some examples tounderstand.
So you have God the Father, thecreator of all.
You have the Son, who is thevisible representation of the
invisible God, and then you havethe Spirit that shows up all the
way back in Genesis 1:3 thatsays the Spirit of God hovers
over the face of the water.
Now, they are three in person, they're same in their power, but

(04:47):
different in their personhood.
So the Father is not the Son,the Son is not the Spirit.
So they are separate in theiridentity, but same in their
Godhood.
And so it is, yes, if if if yourbrain doesn't slowly start to
hurt a little bit when thinkingabout that, then you're not
really thinking that deeplyabout it.
But the thing is, is that theHoly Spirit is just as powerful

(05:09):
and just as important as the Sonand the Father.
And here's how this beautifulthing works: that is, there's
this complete triunity of lovewhere the Father points to the
Son.
The Son points to the Father andthe Spirit.
The Spirit points back to theSon.
And so there's this amazingthing that happens, and it is

(05:30):
absolutely wonderful.
And so when we say that weinvite Jesus into our heart, you
know, we want to get saved, really what we're saying is we
want the Holy Spirit to comelive within all of us.
Because Jesus ascended to bewith the Father.
And so even though He isomnipresent and everywhere, the
Spirit is the one that comes anddwells with inside all of us

(05:50):
upon salvation.
And up until this point, that isnot how it worked.
Believed in God and it wascounted unto them for
righteousness.
But from this moment, we'regoing to read today forward, the
Holy Spirit comes and livesinside of all of us, and the
power of God rests on all of us.
So let's read this together andsee when the Holy Spirit came to

(06:13):
be part of the local church.
You ready?
Acts chapter 2, verse 1.
The NLT Bible says this on theday of Pentecost, all the
believers were meeting togetherin one place.
Now already pause again.
What is Pentecost?
Pentecost was the first of thefall feast days for the Jewish
people.
You had the spring feast days, and then you had the fall feast

(06:35):
days.
And this was the first fallfeast day when the first fruits
were actually given back to Godas an act of worship.
So it's on this first fall feastday, about 40 days or so after
the Passover.
So here we go, verse 2.
Suddenly there was a sound likea roaring and mighty windstorm,

(06:56):
and it filled the house wherethey were sitting.
Then what looked like flames ortongues of fire appeared and
settled on each of them.
And everyone present was filledwith the Holy Spirit and began
speaking in other languages.
Other translations will sayother tongues, but it's
languages, as the Holy Spiritgave them the ability.

(07:17):
At that time there were devoutJews from every nation living
among Jerusalem.
Remember why they were there?
It's because it was a feast day.
So that's why it was crowded inJerusalem.
Verse 6.
When they heard the loud noiseand everyone coming running,
they were bewildered to heartheir own languages being spoken
by the believers.
They were completely amazed.

(07:37):
How can this be?
They exclaimed.
These people are all fromGalilee.
And yet we hear them speaking inour own languages.
We have here the Parthians, theMedes, the Elamites, people from
Mesopotamia, Judea, theCappadocia, Pontius, and the
province of Asia, Figra,Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas
of Libya, and Serene, visitorsfrom Rome, both Jews and

(08:01):
converts to Judaism, Cretans andArabs.
And all we hear are themspeaking in our own languages
about the wonderful things thatGod has done.
Then they stood there amazed andperplexed.
What can this mean?
They asked one another.
But others in the crowdridiculed them, said, Man, they
are drunk.
That's all.
Pause for a moment.

(08:21):
Now I don't know what's happenedwhenever you've been around
somebody who drinks.
But when I get around somebodywho drinks, they act a fool.
They don't start speaking indifferent languages.
So I don't know what kind ofspecial sauce was going on back
in the early church time.
But apparently there was somekind of special, special juice
that was happening.
That whenever you drank it, youcould speak in multiple
different languages.
So they were like, maybe that'swhat's going on.

(08:43):
But no, that is not what's goingon.
And there's this amazing thingthat when the Holy Spirit comes,
he empowers us for the work ofministry.
Well, what was the number oneministry that needed to happen?
Is that all these differentpeople from all these different
countries and walks of life, they all needed to hear the
gospel.
And so when we receive the HolySpirit, he empowers us to make a

(09:05):
difference.
And so he empowered them tospeak in all these different
languages.
But then watch what happens.
We're just going to read this asa total thing so we can get the
context of the sermon that Peteris about to preach.
And what I love about this isremember, Peter, just about 50
days earlier, when Jesus neededhim the most, ran and hid and

(09:27):
said and denied him three times.
This guy was a failure and acoward.
But now, with the Holy Spirit, with complete boldness, he
stands in front of a crowd ofthousands.
And look at what he says, verse14.
Then Peter stepped forward withthe eleven other apostles and
shouted to the crowd, listencarefully, all of you, fellow

(09:50):
Jews and residents fromJerusalem, make no mistake about
that.
These people are not drunk, asyou are assuming, whatever that
crazy juice is you're thinkingabout.
Nine o'clock in the morning ismuch too early for that.
Come on, somebody.
Now, what you see was predictedlong ago by the prophet Joel.
And he's gonna he's gonna quotean Old Testament scripture.

(10:11):
In the last days, God says, Iwill pour out my spirit on all
people.
Your sons and daughters willprophesy.
Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream
dreams, which by the way, Iguess that's how you can tell if
God thinks you're old.
Are you dreaming dreams orhaving visions?
In those days I will pour out myspirit, even on my servants, men

(10:34):
and women alike, and they willprophesy, and I will cause
wonders in the heavens above andsigns on the earth below, blood
and fire and clouds of smoke.
The sun will become dark and themoon will turn blood red before
the great and glorious day ofthe Lord arrives.
But everyone who calls on thename of the Lord will be saved.

(10:57):
People of Israel, listen, Godpublicly endorsed Jesus of
Nazareth by doing powerfulmiracles, wonders, and signs
through him, as you well know.
But God knew what would happen, for his pre-arranged plan was
carried out when Jesus wasbetrayed.
When the people, uh, with thehelp of lawless Gentiles, you

(11:18):
nailed him to the cross andkilled him.
But God released him from thehorrors of death and raised him
back to life, for death couldnot keep him in its grip.
King David said this about him.
No wonder my heart is glad, andmy tongue shouts his praises.

(11:42):
My body rests in hope, for youwill not leave my soul among the
dead, nor will you allow yourholy one to rot in the grave.
You have shown me the way oflife, and you will fill me with
joy in your presence.
Dear brothers, think about this.
Man, Peter ain't messing around.
You can be sure that thepatriarch David wasn't referring

(12:04):
to himself, for he died and wasburied.
He's in the dead, but his tombis still here among us.
But he was a prophet, and heknew God had promised with an
oath that one of David's owndescendants would sit on his
throne.
David was looking into thefuture and speaking of the
Messiah's resurrection.
He was saying that God would notleave him among the dead or

(12:27):
allow his body to rot in thegrave.
God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of
this.
Now he is exalted to the placeof highest honor in heaven at
God's right hand.
And the Father, as he haspromised, gave the Holy Spirit
to pour out upon us, just as wesee and hear today.

(12:50):
For David himself never ascendedinto heaven, yet he said, The
Lord said to my Lord, Sit at theplace of honor at my right hand
until I humble your enemies, andby making them a footstool under
your feet.
So let everyone in Israel knowfor certain that God has made
this Jesus, whom you crucifiedto be both Lord and Messiah.

(13:13):
Peter's words pierced theirhearts, and they said to him and
the other apostles, Brothers, what shall we do?
And Peter replied, Each of youmust repent of your sins and
turn to God and be baptized inthe name of the Lord Jesus
Christ for the forgiveness ofyour sins, and then you will
receive the gift of the HolySpirit.
This promise is to you and toyour children and to all those

(13:37):
far away who have been called bythe Lord our God.
Then Peter continued preachingfor a long time, strongly urging
all his listeners, saveyourselves from this crooked
generation.
And look, listen at this.
And then those who believed whatPeter said were baptized and
added to the church daily, aboutthree thousand in all.

(13:59):
So what's amazing is when theHoly Spirit came and filled them
all up, then he empowered themfor the work of ministry.
And so the first work ofministry that was needed was to
immediately get the gospel outto everybody around.
So they began to speak in otherlanguages as the Holy Spirit
empowered them to do so.
Well, the next thing that wasneeded was boldness.

(14:20):
So the Holy Spirit filled Peterwith boldness, and so he stood
up and he declared the wondersof the Lord and declared the
goodness of God, and threethousand people were saved.
That's what happens when anordinary person encounters the
extraordinary God and see whathappens.
Now let's finish it up withlooking at what I think is the

(14:42):
perfect church.
Verse 42.
All the believers devotedthemselves to the apostles'
teaching and to fellowship andto sharing in meals, including
the Lord's Supper, and toprayer.
A deep sense of awe came overall of them, and the apostles
performed many miraculous signsand wonders.
All of the believers mettogether in one place and shared

(15:03):
everything they had.
They sold their property andpossessions and shared the money
with those in need.
They worshiped together at thetemple each day, met in homes
for the Lord's Supper, andshared their meals with great
joy and generosity, all thewhile praising God enjoying the
goodwill of all people.
And each day the Lord added totheir fellowship those who were

(15:25):
being saved.
So what it said was is numberone, they got to know God by
knowing the words of God as itwas being taught to them by the
apostles.
Then they did life with oneanother, and they started
growing in their faith.
And then they started to sharetheir faith with one another,
and as they did, they started toknow God, grow in their freedom,
and share Christ with everyone, the church began to grow.

(15:49):
And this is the beginning of therest.
The Holy Spirit is poured outupon us, and even to this day,
when we receive Christ, the HolySpirit comes and dwells within
us, and as we begin to grow inour relationship with the Holy
Spirit, we begin to grow thefruit of the Spirit from
Galatians chapter five.
And then what we see throughoutthe New Testament is as we begin

(16:12):
to grow, then he begins toempower us for ministry.
And that through some of us webegin to be used in the gifts
that are brought to us by theHoly Spirit so that we can do
ministry and so we can benefitthose around us.
And we receive the power of Godand see what amazing things
happen.
How can you experience God andthen how can you be used by God

(16:34):
so others can experience Himtoday?
Let's pray together and we'll bethrough.
Father, thank you so much thatyou sent the Holy Spirit to
dwell within each one of us.
And Holy Spirit, you don't wantto just dwell, but you want to
overwhelm and overcome all ofus.
You want us to be like swimmingin the ocean, completely

(16:55):
surrounded and overwhelmed byyour goodness.
And you want to empower us tomake a difference.
I pray that you will light afire within us, that we will be
hungry and thirsty for more ofyour presence, for more of your
goodness, and then to share thatgoodness with others.
In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen.
Acts 1.8 says this.

(17:15):
Jesus said, You will receivepower when the Holy Spirit comes
upon you, and then you will bemy witnesses to the end of the
earth.
My prayer is that you willexperience the power of the Holy
Spirit, and then you will sharethat goodness with someone
today.
I will see you tomorrow for Actschapter three.
