Now let's grow in God's Wordtogether.
Well, hello, everybody.
Welcome back to the BibleBreakdown Podcast with your
host, Pastor Brandon.

(00:20):
Today, Acts chapter 10.
And if I were to give this one atitle, it would be Pentecost
Part 2.
It is the sequel to whathappened in Acts chapter 2.
Only this time it's to Gentiles.
And so it's going to be really, really awesome.
Also, Peter's going to have areally weird dream.
There's going to be a whole lotof great stuff that's going to
go on in here.
But before we get to that, asalways, if you like what we're

(00:42):
doing here, make sure you like, share, and subscribe to the
YouTube videos.
Make sure you are commenting andletting us know how you are
encountering God through readinghis word.
Also, if you listen to apodcast, you are my favorites.
Make sure you leave us afive-star review.
Let us know how you areinteracting with God's word
together as well.
Also, make sure that you aregoing to the Bible breakdown

(01:02):
discussion and just join theconversation as we are just
digging into God's Word andcreating this community around
just knowing God together.
Because the more we dig, themore we find.
And I want to catch us up towhat's about to happen because,
man, it's about to go just crazyin the early church.
Don't forget that thedoctor-turned investigative

(01:23):
journalist, Luke, is writing asequel to the gospel of Luke.
And he is telling in the gospelof Luke, he was telling about
the life, death, burial, resurrection of Jesus.
And now Acts is the sequel tothe same, written to the same
guy at Theopolis, inspired bythe Holy Spirit, to talk about
the first 30 to 35 years of theearly church.

(01:44):
And I love that the overalltheme of this is that if you
were voted, most likely tosucceed, if everything always
goes your way and everything isjust always good in your life,
I've got good news for you.
God can still use you.
However, likely, most of thetime, he uses the least likely
to succeed, those who havenothing going for them, and

(02:06):
those who seem to be forgottenby everybody else.
God uses the ordinary to do theextraordinary in his kingdom.
And we see that in the Acts ofthe Apostles, that these
ordinary fishermen and used upPharisee that we're that we're
learning about, they are shakingthe entire world.
And what we're about to see is asequel to Acts chapter two.

(02:29):
Now remember what happened inActs chapter two, that they were
all together, one mind, oneheart, praying for the Holy
Spirit.
And the Holy Spirit descendedand filled all of them.
They were filled with him withboldness, and they go out and
they just start spreading thegospel, and it was amazing, it
was awesome.
And mostly, in this time, notall, but mostly, the gospel is

(02:49):
now spreading among the Jewishnation.
But now things are about to justgo for everybody.
And watch what happens as we dothis.
And so first, we got to rememberthat in the context of Jewish
culture, it was considered to bedisrespectful to have anything
to do with Gentile people.
And you got to remember that itwas a lot of the Gentile people

(03:10):
that had tried to destroy theJewish nation for years.
So some of this slight kind ofdifficulty with them liking
non-Jewish people is notentirely undeserved, right?
But at the same time, there is alittle bit of this elitism and
that we are the chosen peoplegoing on.
And so there's a lot thatthey're grappling with here as
they're also understanding thegospel.

(03:32):
But watch what happens as Godstarts to turn Peter's heart to
help him understand that thegospel is for everyone.
So if you got your Bibles opento Acts chapter 10, the New
Living Translation, let's readthis together.
Here we go.
Verse 1.
In Caesarea, there lived a Romanarmy officer named Cornelius,
who was a captain of the Italianregiment.

(03:54):
He was a devout, God-fearingman, and he was everyone as well
as everyone in his household.
He gave generously to the poorand prayed regularly to God.
One afternoon, about threeo'clock, he had a vision that he
saw an angel of God coming tohim.
Cornelius, the angel said.
Cornelius star stared at him interror.

(04:15):
What is it, sir?
He asked the angel.
The angel replied, Your prayersand gifts to the poor have been
received by God as an offering.
Now send some men to Joppa andsummon a man named Simon Peter.
He is staying with Simon, thetanner, who lives near the
seashore.
As soon as the angel was gone,Cornelius called two of his

(04:36):
household servants and a devoutsoldier, one of his personal
attendants, and he told themwhat had happened, and he sent
them off to Joppa.
So something's going on, and hetells them specifically where to
go and what to do.
All right, verse 9.
The next day, as Cornelius'messengers were nearing the
town, Peter went up on the flatroof to pray.
And it was about noon, and hewas hungry.

(05:00):
But while a meal was beingprepared, he fell into a trance.
He saw the sky open, andsomething like a large sheet was
let down by its four corners.
In the sheet were all sorts ofanimals, reptiles, and birds.
Then a voice said to him, Getup, Peter, kill, and eat them.
No, Lord, Peter declared, I havenever eaten anything that our

(05:22):
Jewish laws have declared impureand unclean.
But the voice spoke to himagain, Do not call something
unclean if God has made itclean.
The same vision repeated threetimes.
Then the sheet was suddenlypulled up to heaven.
Peter was perplexed.
What could this vision mean?
And just then the men sent byCornelius found Simon's house.

(05:46):
Standing outside the gate, theyasked if a man named Simon Peter
was staying there.
Meanwhile, as Peter was puzzlingover this vision, the Holy
Spirit said to him, Three menhave come looking for you.
Get up, go downstairs, and gowith them without hesitation.
Don't worry, for I have sentthem.
So Peter went down and said, Iam the man you were looking for.

(06:08):
Why have you come?
They said, We were sent byCornelius, a Roman officer.
He is a devout and God fearingman, well respected by all the
Jews.
A holy angel instructed him tosummon you to his house so that
he can hear your message.
So Peter invited the men to stayfor the night.
The next day he went with them, accompanied by some of his

(06:30):
brothers from Joppa.
So so far what is happening isthere's been this vision.
And in Jewish culture, there wasa lot of different things that
you could eat, no problem, butthere were some things that you
weren't allowed to eat.
They were considered unholy,unclean.
But then he has this visionwhere God is all of a sudden
saying, I'm now calling thesethings clean.

(06:50):
You can eat them.
But he wakes up and obviouslyhe's realizing God is not
telling me I can have a hamsandwich now.
He must he must be sayingsomething else.
Something else is going on.
And what we are going to realizeis that up until now, they had
considered the Jewish or excuseme, the Gentile people unclean.
But no longer.
Here we go, verse 24.

(07:12):
They arrived in Caesarea and thefollowing day.
Cornelius was waiting for them, and he had called together his
relatives and close friends.
As Peter entered the home,Cornelius fell at his feet and
worshipped him.
But Peter pulled him up andsaid, Stand up, dude, I'm a
human being just like you.
So they talked together and wentinside, where many others

(07:32):
assembled.
Peter told them, You know, it'sagainst our law for a Jewish man
to enter a Gentile home likethis, or to even associate with
you.
But God has shown me that Ishould no longer think of you as
unclean or impure.
So I came without objection assoon as I was sent for.
Now, tell me why you have sentme.

(07:53):
Cornelius replied, Four days agoI was praying in my house about
this time, three o'clock in theafternoon.
Suddenly a man in dazzlingclothes was standing in front of
me.
He told me, Cornelius, yourprayer has been heard, and your
gifts to the poor have beennoticed by God.
Now send some messengers toJoppa, and summon a man named

(08:14):
Simon Peter.
He is staying in the home ofSimon, a tanner who lives near
the seashore.
So I send for you at once, as itwas good of you to come.
Now we are all here waitingbefore God to hear the message
the Lord has given you.
Then Peter replied, I see veryclearly that God shows no
favoritism, and every nation heaccepts those who fear him and

(08:37):
do what is right.
This is the message of the goodnews to the people of Israel.
And there is peace with Godthrough Jesus Christ, who is
Lord of all.
You know what happenedthroughout Judea at the
beginning in Galilee, when Johnbegan preaching the message of
baptism.
And you know that God anointedJesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Spirit and with power.
Then Jesus went around doinggood, healing all who were

(08:59):
oppressed by the devil, for Godwas with him.
When we, the apostles, arewitness, or wit and we the
apostles witnessed all of thisthat he did throughout Judea and
in Jerusalem.
They put him to death by hanginghim on a tree.
But God raised him to life onthe third day.
Then God allowed him to appearnot to the general public, but

(09:21):
to those whom God had chosen inadvance to be his witnesses.
We were those who ate and drankwith him after he rose from the
dead.
He ordered us to preacheverywhere and to testify that
Jesus is the one appointed byGod to be the judge of all,
living and dead.
He is the one all the prophetstestified about, saying that

(09:42):
everyone who believes in himwill have their sins forgiven
through his name.
So what has happened is hepreaches the gospel to these
people.
And some of these people hadnever even heard of Jesus.
They just knew of Yahweh, andthey knew the God of Israel, and
they'd served the God of Israel.
But now Peter says, Oh Lord, you've heard of Yahweh.
Let me tell you about his divineson, Jesus.

(10:05):
Verse 44.
Even as Peter was saying thesethings, the Holy Spirit fell
upon all of them who werelistening to the message, just
like what happened in Acts 2.
The Jewish believers who hadcome with him or come with Peter
were amazed that the gift of theHoly Spirit had been poured out
on the Gentiles, too.
They, for they heard themspeaking in other tongues,

(10:27):
praising God.
And Peter asked, Can anyoneobject to their being baptized
now that they have received theHoly Spirit just as we did?
So he gave orders to them to bebaptized in the name of Jesus
Christ.
Afterward, Cornelius asked himto stay with him for several
days.
Wow, isn't it amazing that Godis no respecter of persons?

(10:49):
Up until this point, they didn'tknow what was going to happen.
So they did what they knew todo, and they were spreading the
gospel, but spreading it to theJewish nation.
They had no idea that what Godwas doing was not limited to the
Jewish nation, but it was foreverywhere, for all time.
And can you imagine having neverheard about Jesus?

(11:11):
You'd heard of Yahweh before, but to hear about Jesus for the
very first time, and even whileyou were hearing, as faith began
to rise and be built up in them, that boom, the Holy Spirit came
into them, filled them up, andthey began to speak with other
tongues and use the other giftsof the Spirit as whatever God

(11:31):
had need of in that moment asthey were sharing with one
another the goodness of God.
It's just amazing that when weteach and preach about Jesus,
power comes with it.
So what can we learn with thistoday?
And that is this that when youshare the gospel, the power of
God goes with you.
And when we receive the gospel, the power of God comes upon us.

(11:56):
And so we have no idea.
I don't I don't think for us whohave been exposed to the gospel
for a while now, I think it'seasy to forget the joy and the
power of God that comes upon uswho have received the gospel.
That's one of the things I heardsomeone say one time.
How do you know if you've trulybecome born again and receive

(12:16):
the gospel?
And that is that it changes yourlife.
That you you don't just receive, okay, I believe now that Jesus
is the Son of God and go aboutyour life, but when you realize
He is a Son of God and He is nowmy Lord and my Savior, that
something happens as the HolySpirit comes and lives inside of
us, he fills us up and hetransforms us.

(12:37):
And if that's happening in yourlife today, you may have 99
things going wrong, but Jesusain't one.
And I want you to celebratetoday that the Holy Spirit lives
within you, and because of that, the power of God is in you and
can work through you to make adifference to everyone around
you.
Let's pray together.
God, thank you so much for yourgoodness and for your mercy.

(12:57):
Thank you that you are with us.
Thank you that the power thatbrought Jesus back to life is
the same power that lives in allof us.
I pray, God, that we willrealize that and we'll never
walk around feeling like avictim, feeling powerless, or
feeling forgotten, but torealize that because of you, we
are more than conquerors.
Thank you for that.
In Jesus' name we pray.

(13:19):
Amen.
Remember, Acts 1, Jesus saidthis.
Say it with me.
You will receive power when theHoly Spirit comes upon you, and
you will be my witnesses to theends of the earth.
My prayer today is that you willreceive the power of the Holy
Spirit and you will be a witnessin your world today.
I love you.
I see you tomorrow for Actschapter 11.
