Ep. 016: Matt Pryor of The Get Up Kids

In this episode I chat with one of my favorite singer/songwriters Matt Pryor. Matt is known for his work in The Get Up Kids, The New Amsterdams, The Terrible Twos and Radar State. He also has his own solo records. ALL are so dang amazing!

How I discovered The Get Up Kids, the nostalgic EMO’S music venue located in Austin, his thoughts on hanging with fans before or after a show. the term EMO & the evolution of the EMO scene, natural talent vs. hard work, the difference between TGUK, The New Ams & Radar State songs and how they find their home in specific bands, if there are plans for new a new Terrible Twos album, the amazing kindness of one of our mutual friends Chris Conley (of Saves The Day) and what its like having someone other than James play the keys in TGUK.

We talk about more than just music too! We discuss our shared love of John Mulaney, Pete Holmes, Schitt’s Creek and the hillarious Letter Kenny, the book ‘Comedy Sex God’ by Pete Holmes and how we found a little bit of our own story within Pete’s story. He also goes on to tell me about his favorite comedy podcast and how there are therapeutic for him. We dig into the anxiety and heaviness we are both feeling right now with what is going on the world, and our place within it AND what is next for his very own podcast, ‘Nothing To Write Home About.’
