"I could never homeschool. I’m just not patient enough."

Sound familiar? It’s the line homeschool moms hear on repeat and it’s not the compliment people think it is. Because here’s the truth: no one starts homeschooling with angelic levels of patience. If anything, homeschooling is the fast track to realizing just how impatient you really are.

In this episode, Christy-Faith pulls back the curtain on the “patience myth.” She shares why patience isn’t a prerequisite for homeschooling; it’s a byproduct. You don’t need perfection to show up for your kids; you just need willingness. Willingness to grow, to pivot, to try again when yesterday was a disaster.

From messy mornings to glitter-covered chaos, this is a reminder that homeschooling is less about temperament and more about commitment. If you’ve ever thought, “I’m not patient enough,” this episode will flip that script and show you why you’re already more equipped than you think.

Christy-Faith (00:00):
Have you ever said or heard someone else say,

(00:03):
I could never homeschool mykids. I'm just not patient
enough. First of all, same.Second of all, that is hands
down one of the most backhandedcompliments homeschool moms get.
No one starts homeschoolingbecause they have angelic levels
of patience.
If anything, homeschooling isthe fast track to realizing that
you don't. You're not kidding.Today, we're gonna talk about

(00:26):
what people are really sayingwhen they tell us they're not
patient enough, why it missesthe point entirely, and how
homeschooling isn't about beingperfect, it's about showing up.
So if you've ever cried intoyour coffee and still showed up
for that read aloud time, you'renot alone. Today's show is about
the real reason why wehomeschool and why patience has

(00:47):
nothing to do with it.
Before we get into today's show, welcome. I'm Christy- Faith,
author of the book HomeschoolRising, speaker and founder of
Thrive Homeschool Community. Sowhat is Thrive? Thrive

(01:10):
Homeschool Community gives you aclear expert led path to build
the homeschool that yourchildren deserve without all
that Internet noise, wastedtime, and constant second
guessing. We ensure your programmeets your child's unique needs,
fast track your success, andgive you the confidence to know
without a shadow of a doubt thatthe education you're providing

(01:34):
is second to none.
I created Thrive because latenight Google searching and doom
scrolling isn't an educationalplan. It's a community that I
wish I had back when I startedand a place that saves you so
much time, so much money, somany headaches, so many tears,
you wouldn't even believe it. Soif you're ready to feel
confident in your homeschoolingjourney and give your kids the

(01:56):
education that they deserve, click the link in the show notes
to check out Thrive HomeschoolCommunity. It's not open all of
the time, but if it is closed, please do get on the wait list.
Okay.
Back to today's topic. Let'sclear something up right now.
Saying I could never homeschoolbecause I'm not patient enough
is like saying I could never runa marathon because I've never

(02:18):
run one before. Well, yeah, that's kinda how growth works.
But somehow when it comes tohomeschooling, people act like
you either have the magicalpatient's gene or you don't.
Like homeschool moms were justborn with extra whispery voices
and have never yelled from thelaundry room while one child
argues about math and the otherone is markering up the walls.

(02:39):
That we are somehow more patientis a myth, and it's exhausting
to always be hearing it, yet itstill persists. Most of us
didn't start homeschoolingbecause we were naturally
patient. We startedhomeschooling because we had a
vision for our family, and wewere willing to work on
ourselves to get there. Bigdifference.
Let's pull the curtain back abit here. When someone says to

(03:00):
me, oh, you must be so patient,Christy. I could never
homeschool. I know they'rethinking that they're being
nice. I get it.
They're probably just trying tobe polite. But what sounds like
a compliment, you're so patientis actually a subtle way of
saying this isn't possible forme because I wasn't born with
the same tools you were. And ina way, it minimizes the work

(03:20):
that we've put in on ourselvesand with our parenting. That
mindset is called a fixedmindset. It's very well
researched, and that is thebelief that traits like
patience, discipline, perseverance are just built in
features genetically, like blueeyes and curly hair.
But motherhood doesn't work likethat. Homeschooling definitely

(03:41):
doesn't work like that. We'reall showing up with the same
shaky hands and late librarybooks, the same exhaustion, the
same Amazon cart full ofcurriculum we may or may not
open. The difference is notpersonality. The difference is
practice.
It's intention for the mom who'sdoubting herself right now.
Patience is not a prerequisiteto homeschooling. It's a

(04:03):
byproduct. You grow it in thefire. You grow it on the days
where someone cries overhandwriting, the toddler spills
the smoothie, and the only thinggetting socialized is your last
nerve.
We're not patient so we canhomeschool. We homeschool, and
it gives us a thousanduncomfortable little moments to
become more patient if we letit. And let's not miss the other

(04:25):
piece to this. When people sayI'm not patient enough, what
they really mean is, I'm scaredI'd mess this up. I don't know
if I could handle the pressure.
I'm already overwhelmed, and Ican't imagine adding one more
thing. All of those are validfears that we will get more into
right after this word from oursponsors. As a homeschool mom
who values a family togetherapproach and leans towards the

(04:45):
classical and Charlotte Masonstyles, I often struggle to
bring my educational vision tolife with my kids' diverse ages
and learning needs. With all ourinterests and super packed
schedule, bridging that gapbetween the dreamy homeschool I
want and reality, I gotta behonest. It's a challenge.
Now, yes, I know perfectionisn't the goal. But if you're
listening and you could use alittle easing of your mental

(05:06):
load in your day to day, I founda resource that has become the
quiet hero of our routine, andit could be a really great
option for you too. BJU Presshomeschool curriculum. Now many
think that BJU Press homeschoolis solely an all in one option,
and though it does excel in thatrole, did you know you can also
opt for specific courses andtailor them to fit your family's
needs just as I have? BGU PressHomeschool provides the perfect

(05:30):
balance of structure andflexibility and easily
complements my family's mixedage family together on the couch
learning style.
They are second to none inintegrating a biblical
worldview, stimulating criticalthinking, and offering tons of
hands on activities in thelessons. To find out how BJU

reading curriculum that ditchesworkbooks and drills for fun and

Welcome back. Instead of callingthose fears what they are, we
often slap the word patience onit and then just move on. You
don't need to be patient tohomeschool.
You need to be willing, willingto grow, willing to pivot,

(06:57):
willing to try and fail and getback up again, and maybe willing
to cry in your car for fiveminutes before regrouping. Let
me ask you this. Have you everheard someone say, I'm just not
patient enough to be married?Nope. Or maybe?
Stay with me here though on themetaphor. Because we all
understand that marriage isn'tabout having endless patience.
It's about commitment. Right? It's about choosing to stay in

(07:20):
the room when you're mad, tired,or would rather be watching
Netflix alone in peace.
We don't go into marriagethinking, well, I've already
mastered compassion, conflictresolution, and effective
communication, so I guess I'mready. No. We go in with stars
in our eyes, hitting our firstbig argument over how to load
the dishwasher, and thenrealize, oh, this is gonna take

(07:42):
some work. But we do the workbecause it matters, because we
love the people involved, because we've committed to
figuring it out. Homeschoolingis the same.
It's not something you walk intoalready being perfectly equipped
for. It's something that yougrow into, like parenthood,
marriage, or trying tounderstand your Wi Fi printer.
Now don't ask me about techbecause I can't help you there.

(08:04):
You don't need to be patient tohomeschool any more than you
need to be patient to getmarried. What you need is the
willingness to grow, to screw upand try again.
To say, I was too harsh earlier.I'm really sorry. Let's reset.
To see the long game, even whenthe short game looks like a
glittered covered yogurt smeareddisaster. So the next time you

(08:24):
hear someone say, I could neverhomeschool.
I'm not patient enough. Or maybeyou say this to yourself, I
shouldn't be homeschooling. Ihave no business doing this. I'm
not patient enough. Flip itaround.
Could you do something hard onpurpose because you believe that
the end result is worth it? Ifyou've ever stayed in a tough
relationship, stuck at a job youweren't sure that you could

(08:45):
handle, or kept parentingthrough sleepless nights and
tantrums at Target, you alreadyhave the tools. You're already
doing the hard thing.Homeschooling just channels that
same grit in a differentdirection. I did not start
homeschooling because I waspatient.
I started homeschooling becauseI wanted something better for my
kids, something more connected, something more intentional, more

(09:07):
aligned with the kind ofchildhood that I envisioned for
them. And guess what? I wasstill me on day one, impatient,
easily flustered, sometimes tooquick with a sharp tone or too
slow with an apology. But thething is is homeschooling didn't
require me to show up alreadyperfect. It just asked me to
show up and try and grow, and Idid.

(09:29):
And I'm gonna tell you how afterthe break. Before we continue, I
wanna share with you a programthat's been a game changer for
our homeschool. At our center,we instructed and helped kids
through pretty much every mathprogram on the market and know
firsthand just how important asolid math foundation is for our
kids' futures. As a careereducator with high standards,
finding the right program thatchecked all the boxes felt like

(09:51):
too tall of an order until oneday I tried CTC Math. CTC Math
is an online math curriculum fork to 12 students with motivating
interactive lessons that allowkids to learn at their own pace.
It does all the teaching andgrading so you don't have to,
and their adaptive lessonsadjust so your child is

without losing my mind orblowing the budget. Azure

(11:17):
Welcome back. So how did I showup? Imperfectly, messily,
exhaustedly. I've cried frombeing overwhelmed just like
every other homeschooling parentI'm sure has.
I've had moments where Igenuinely thought, maybe I'm the
problem, which for the record issometimes very much true. But
I've also had moments where I'vewatched my child get it.

(11:38):
Something that they've struggledfor months, and I got to be
there to witness thebreakthrough. I've seen their
confidence grow. I've seen ourconnection deepen and joy return
in ways that I don't think wouldhave ever happened in a
different setting, and I've seenmyself grow too.
I can say without a shadow of adoubt that I am a better mom
because of homeschooling. Notbecause I got it right every

(12:01):
day, but because I kept comingback to the table, because I let
it refine me. You see, homeschooling is not a reward
for already having your lifetogether. It's a process that
changes you from the inside outif you let it. And let me tell
you, my parenting style and mymotivations for homeschooling
back when I started are totallydifferent than why I homeschool

(12:22):
now and how I parent now.
I look back and honestly, I amso embarrassed with my tiger mom
approach to homeschooling and myauthoritarian style of
parenting. We've done a lot ofwork over here and a lot of
healing. But as I embracedgrowth and as I embraced
researching more, I learned frommy mistakes. Now I'm not saying
I'm perfect. I hope you're notgetting that from this.

(12:44):
My point is is that we're nothomeschooling because we're
naturally better than otherpeople. We're homeschooling
because we're committed to thisjourney, and we know it's the
right thing for our kids. And welearn how to pivot, how to
pause, and pour ourselvesanother cup of coffee when we
need it. So no, you don't needto be more patient or extra
patient in order to homeschool. You don't need to be perfect.

(13:04):
You don't need to be polished. You certainly don't need to be
Pinterest worthy. You just needto be willing, willing to try,
willing to fall and try again, willing to grow alongside your
kids, not stand in front of themas some perfectly packaged
model, but right there next tothem figuring this life out too.
Because that that right there, that's what makes a powerful

(13:25):
unstoppable homeschool mom. Notyour natural temperament, not
your personality, not whether ornot you manage to speak gently
when you find the wet laundry inthe washer again smelly.
The truth is you're alreadydoing brave hard things every
single day. If you care deeplyabout your kids, you're showing
up. Even when it's messy, youare already in the arena. And if

(13:47):
you're feeling unsure oroverwhelmed or like everyone
else must have it all togetherexcept you, let me tell you
this. Because I work withhundreds of moms in Thrive
Homeschool Community, and inthere, we keep it real.
In fact, I often joke thatThrive Homeschool Community is
for imperfect moms. So if you'reperfect, you're not allowed in,
but that's kind of our posture. We're definitely a growth

(14:09):
mindset girly place. You areexactly the kind of mom we built
Thrive Homeschool Community for.And no, we're not saints.
We're not the patients club. We're just a bunch of regular
moms who decided that walkingthis road together is better
than walking it alone. And wetake our kids' education
seriously, and we wanna be onthe right path that gives them
the education that they need nowto prepare them for a bright

(14:31):
future. If you want more of thiskind of honesty and
encouragement, check out my bookhomeschool rising too. You can
get it on Amazon.
It's full of the real talk thatI wish I had when I started. The
stuff that gave me theconfidence and reassurance that
I was making an informeddecision about my child's
education. That book is ifyou're homeschool curious, but
also if you're currentlyhomeschooling because it will be

(14:52):
the reassurance that you aremaking the right decision for
your children. So the next timesomeone says, I could never
homeschool. I'm not patientenough.
Even though you want to say, well, neither was I, but I
showed up anyway. Please don'tsay that. Maybe this could be an
opportunity to be vulnerable andinvite a conversation. Maybe
it's a time for you to be real.Maybe you can say, no.

(15:14):
It really is hard, but it's soworth it. Our life is
incredible. And, of course, always give the benefit of the
doubt. Often people just don'tknow what to say, and it's the
first thing that comes to mind.Okay.
But before we go today, I havesomething really important to
share with you. As moms, don'twe treasure those little secrets
and those tips and theencouragement and the wisdom
that helps us give our kids thevery best in our homeschooling?

(15:37):
And isn't it a complete bonuswhen that treasure trove doesn't
break the bank or is free? Whatif right now you could be a part
of that treasure for anothermom? What if you could help her
find the courage to starthomeschooling, the clarity to
keep going, or the confidence tobelieve she's giving her kids
exactly what they need, allwithout spending a dime?
See, that's what Christy FaithShow is all about. Giving you

(16:00):
the tools, the encouragement, and the community that you need
to homeschool with purpose andjoy. I don't gatekeep content. I
don't put up a paywall. Eventhough a lot of people do do
that, and what I share is worthso much, it takes a team, time,
and resources to make this showhappen.
And we do it because we have anincredible mission, but we can't

(16:21):
do it alone. For my regularlisteners, you've heard me say
this before, so here is yourcue. This section of my show
takes me about sixty seconds toshare. So it's the perfect time
to pause, leave a comment, givesome stars, encourage a mom in
some way, or engage on theplatform that you're listening
in on right now. Only if youlike this episode, of course.

(16:41):
But that engagement, whetherit's just a quick comment, a
review, the five stars, orsimply subscribing, that's what
tells the algorithms that thisshow deserves to be seen. And it
costs you nothing at all, But itcould mean everything to a mom
who's been searching for clarityand confidence in her
homeschooling journey. Thispodcast is about transforming

(17:02):
families and building a movementof moms who are taking back the
hearts and minds of their kids. And you, my friend, are a part
of that mission. So if youbelieve in what we're doing over
here, please take a moment toengage.
It's free, it's quick, and it'spowerful. And thank you for
being the reason another momfinds her way forward and
rescues her kid out of a failingsystem. Thank you for listening

(17:25):
today, and I will see you nextweek.
