Today, I’m sitting down with Dr. Deborah Heiser, an applied developmental psychologist and aging specialist, to explore a topic that every business leader should care about—how aging impacts leadership, career transitions, and workplace culture.

As a CEO, you’re not just growing a business; you’re also evolving as a leader, navigating different stages of personal and professional growth.

Dr. Heiser brings a fresh perspective on aging, showing us how to reframe it as a time of wisdom, reinvention, and impact, rather than decline. We also dive into why mentorship is a game-changer for both seasoned executives and rising talent, and how understanding the emotional stages of life can help you lead with more confidence and clarity.

Here are a few of my takeaways:

  1. Instead of stagnation, midlife can be a time of reinvention, expansion, and higher-impact leadership.
  2. Mentorship should not be a burden. It should be organic, behind the scenes and embedded in your culture.
  3. Everyone is a mentor. And, Mentoring doesn’t have to be work-related, but is usually value-related.
  4. The Mentor Project takes the top 1% and connects them with students aged K-College graduates for free, impacting more than 100k people in over 7 countries.
  5. Lateral mentorship is the most impactful type of mentorship in organizations.
