Speaker 1 (00:05):
From the Daily Os. I'm Sam Kazowski, I'm Lucy Tassel.
It's Thursday, the seventeenth of July. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Israel has bombed the Syrian capital of Damascus, its third
strike on the country this week. Syria said the strikes
were quote a blatant violation of international law and killed
civilians and soldiers. Israel said it was defending the Druze
religious minority, which it said had been targeted by the
new Syrian government. Until December last year, Syria was ruled

(00:36):
by the Assad family dictatorship. Its government was overthrown by
a coalition of rebels led by the group Hayat Tarira
al Sham or HTS, which Australia lists as a terrorist organization.
In the following months, forces associated with the government have
attacked or supported attacks against some minority groups in Syria.

(00:57):
Over the weekend, government forces intervened in a conflict between
the Druz religious minority and Bedouin tribes. Israel struck the
area where the conflict was taking place before and after
a cease fire was announced, which Siria said killed civilians.
Israel said it carried out strikes to defend its borders
and the Drews. Israel has a druze population, some of

(01:19):
whom have joined the Israeli defense forces.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Australia's unemployment rate rose to four point three percent in June.
That's up from four point one percent in May. The
unemployment rate measures the percentage of people who were looking
for work but couldn't find any. This figure also reflects
the unemployment rate with certain factors taken out of the calculation,
including fluctuations based on different jobs available at different times

(01:44):
of the year like Christmas casual work. The number of
employed people remains high, with more than fourteen point six
million people in work across June. However, this is the
highest unemployment rate since October twenty twenty four. Australians worked
nearly two billion hours combined last month. That's up slightly
on last year.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Prime Minister Anthony Alberizi has concluded his visit to China,
saying his focus with the country is on reaching quote
more agreement and less disagreement. Albanizi also praised China's President
Xi Jinping, saying he's warm and engaging. The trip, which
included a visit to the Great Wall and to a
panda sanctuary was criticized by Coalition Senator James Patterson, who

(02:27):
said the trip was starting to look a bit indulgent.
In a press conference this afternoon, Albanzi pushed back on
the criticism, saying I think the Opposition have got some
issues they need to sort out within themselves, including over
the relationship with China.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
And some good news for you, Moisha Johnson has become
the first Australian to win the women's ten kilometer open
water swimming title in Singapore at the World Aquatics Championships. Johnson,
who won silver at Paris twenty twenty four one in
a time of about two hours and eight minutes. Fellow
assie Kyle Lee won bronze in the men's event. Both
titles were contested in quote soupy conditions, with the water

(03:07):
temperature sitting at over thirty degrees.

Speaker 2 (03:10):

in the morning, but until then, have a good evening.

Bunjelung Cargotin woman from Gadigol Country.
