Speaker 1 (00:08):
It's Wednesday, the sixth of August. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Tasmania's Liberal leader Jeremy Rockcliffe has been reappointed as the
state's premier. Weeks after an early election. Neither the Liberals
or Labor received a majority, leading to a hung parliament,
but after the approval of the state governor earlier today,
Rockliffe will now try to form a government in parliament.
There are fourteen Liberal members in Tasmania's House of Assembly,

(00:34):
which is their lower house. To form a majority, Rockcliffe
will need the support of at least four other MPs.
Prior to the election, Rockcliffe had been governing in a
minority government since twenty twenty two. Tasmania's Labor leader, Dean
Winter has said he will table a motion of no
confidence in the premier on the first day of this
new parliament.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
A twenty year old city man has become the first
in Australia charged with supplying vape liquid laced with niazines.
Police describe niazines as a type of opioid that is
highly addictive, incredibly potent and potentially lethal. According to New
South Wales Police, they can be up to five hundred
times more potent than heroin. A police search uncovered cash,

(01:19):
weapons and two point one kilos of niazines at a
location connected to the twenty year old. Authorities warn the
vapes were marketed as supercharged and urge caution around recreational
drug use.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
At least one hundred people are missing after severe flash
flooding in India's northern state of Uttarakhand, a popular tourist
destination for people traveling to the Himalayas. Roads and buildings
across the region were damaged by water from the overflowing
Bagurathi River, with communication lines down and a number of
key highways severely damaged. Authorities say one hundred and thirty

(01:55):
people have been rescued so far, and eleven of the
missing are from a nearby army base that was hit
by the flash flooding. Authorities told the BBC they now
hold concerns for a number of other smaller villages downstream
which could be hit by further flash flooding and landslides.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
And today's good news, para athletes in the Northern territory
now have access to greater support and training with the
launch of a new parasport unit in Darwin, Australia's sixth
such facility in just seven months. Backed by about seven
hundred and fifty thousand dollars from the Australian Institute of
Sport alongside funding from the Anti Government and Paralympics Australia,

(02:34):
the unit is part of a broader fifty five million
dollar Federal Power Uplift initiative. The program aims to enhance classification, access,
coaching and performance environments ahead of the Brisbane twenty thirty
two Paralympics.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
And that's the letters from the Daily oz newsroom Now.

your way home today, definitely check out today's deep dive

We'll be back tomorrow with another day dive. Until then,
