Amber (00:00):
How many times have you heard someone say, man, if I
could just win the lottery, allof my problems would be solved?
Or maybe you've heard someonesay something like, One day
we'll inherit some money andthings will be easier.
A lot of people are quietlyhoping their financial life gets

(00:21):
fixed by a lucky break.
But here's the truth most peoplewho become financially stable
didn't get lucky.
They got intentional.
So today I want to talk to youabout the difference between
waiting for luck and actuallycreating your own financial
luck.

Announcer (00:41):

to paycheck before learning thefundamentals of financial
success.

off their debt for good andenjoy happier, less stressful
lives.

(01:04):
practical advice to gainfinancial freedom.

Amber (01:12):
Thank you for listening to the Dev Free Dad Podcast,
where we help normal, everydaypeople like you take control of
your finances and live ahappier, less stressful life.
I'm Amber, your host for today'sepisode.
Myself and my husband saved andpaid off over$54,000 in just 20
months and have been livingdebt-free outside of our
mortgage since 2018.

(01:34):
Now, after listening to thisepisode, if you're ready to take
things to the next level, you'resick of living paycheck to
paycheck, you want to reducefinancial stress in your own
life, you want to build savingsthat are there for all of life's
emergencies, and you're finallyready to pay off your annoying
debt for good, then you're gonnawant to stick around at the end

(01:57):
of the episode.
I've got something for you.
Now, because of St.
Patrick's Day, and I mean thishappens all year long, not just
on St.
Patrick's Day.
Luck is kind of the theme of theday, though.
Four leaf clovers, pots of gold, leprechauns, the whole thing.
But when it comes to money, alot of people are honestly
waiting for something similar.

(02:18):
They're waiting for a financialmiracle.
Maybe winning the lottery.
Maybe it's a big inheritancesomeday.
Maybe it's a raise, a promotion,or some kind of big break that
suddenly makes everythingeasier.
And I get it.
When money feels tight, the ideaof a big win feels really

(02:40):
appealing.
But the problem with waiting forluck is this while you're
waiting, nothing actuallychanges.
Bills keep coming, debt keepscollecting interest, paychecks
keep disappearing as fast asthey're coming in.
And that's where a lot of peopleget stuck for years.
Not because they're lazy orirresponsible, but because

(03:04):
they're hoping somethingexternal fixes their situation
instead of realizing theyactually have more control than
they think.
And I mean, a lot of our moneyproblems are behaviors.
Now, let's talk about thelottery for a minute.
Millions of people buy ticketsevery single week, hoping
they're the one who hits thejackpot.

(03:24):
And again, I get the dream.
Who wouldn't want to wake uptomorrow with millions of
dollars in the bank?
But the odds of winning a majorlottery jackpot are roughly one
in hundreds of millions.
You're far more likely to getstruck by lightning, become a
professional athlete, or meetyour celebrity crush at the

(03:46):
grocery store.
Yet people spend thousands ofdollars over their lifetime
chasing that dream.
Now imagine if instead of buyinglottery tickets every week, that
money went into paying off debt, building an emergency fund,
investing in the future.
I know, I get it.
You're like boring, Amber.
It's not flashy, it's notexciting.

(04:09):
But over time, those small, consistent decisions can
completely transform yourfinancial life.
It may not feel like luck in themoment, but down the road,
people will look at you and say, wow, you're so lucky, you're
debt-free.
And the truth is, it's not luckat all.
It's the hard work that you putinto it.

(04:30):
Another quiet financialassumption some people make is
inheritance.
Nobody says it out loud, butsometimes people think, well,
someday when my parents passaway, there might be some money
there.
The reality is that inheritanceis never guaranteed.
People are living longer thanever, healthcare costs are

(04:52):
rising, long-term care can wipeout savings quickly.
And many retirees are spendingtheir money.
Heck, they should spend theirmoney.
They're the ones who earned it,right?
They may as well enjoy it.
So building your financialfuture based on money you might
get someday is incredibly risky.

(05:13):
A better approach is buildingyour life as if no inheritance
is coming at all.
Then if it does happen someday,it becomes a blessing or a
bonus, not a rescue plan.
Now, here's the cool part peoplewho take control of their
finances to look lucky toeveryone else, they seem lucky

(05:37):
because they have savings whensomething breaks.
They don't panic when unexpectedbills show up.
They have options when lifechanges, but the luck didn't
magically appear.
It came from a few simplehabits.
Things like having a plan foryour money instead of wondering

(05:58):
where it went each month, payingoff debt, which frees up your
income, building emergencysavings, so surprises don't turn
into financial disasters, planning ahead for expenses, so
things like Christmas, vacations, car repairs don't
blow up your budget.

(06:18):
Those habits slowly createsomething that feels like
financial luck, but it's reallyjust financial preparation.
So with St.
Patrick's Day here, a lot ofpeople are talking about luck.
But when it comes to money, thepeople who build real financial
stability usually aren't thelucky ones.

(06:40):
They're the ones who made adecision.
They stopped waiting for alottery ticket to save them.
They stopped assuming a raise orinheritance will fix everything.
And instead, they started doingsmall, consistent things that
put them back in control oftheir money.
And over time, those choicescreate something way better than

(07:04):
luck.
They create financial freedom.
Now, if you're sitting therethinking, okay, I'm ready, I'm
done living paycheck topaycheck.
