(00:18):
Hey, welcome back to the podcast, the evil Dungeon
Masters Universe podcast AD and D Universe podcast.
I'm your host, Vince. Hopefully you're doing well out
there is Monday and time for another podcast.
I did a couple things we'll get out of the way today.
The Evil dm.com is my website. askthedm@theevildm.com is my

(00:39):
e-mail address. patreon.com/the Evil DM is where you can support
me. Anyway, I had to put out a
little thing that I'm going to be taking a little bit of a
break on the YouTube channel as far as putting out videos while
I focus on some other things right now.
But that doesn't mean podcasts and things like that will go
away. I'm still have the basic fantasy

(01:00):
actual play up there for people that like to listen to my group
play basic fantasy, which peopledo they do really well.
The downloads on the audio podcast side, YouTube, not so
much, but I put it up there because there's a handful of
people that enjoy listening to it there and you'll still get
the AD and the podcast there on YouTube as well.

(01:21):
I'll just be taking a little break from YouTube for the time
being just to recharge a little bit and focus on a new position
at work. So which is a little less
responsibility, but it's a lot of stuff that I have to kind of
relearn to do since I haven't been in this section of work.
But that's a a better opportunity.

(01:41):
But anyway, on to AD and D todayI'm going to talk a lot about a
creature that when I was scrolling through some of the
books, yeah, we're doing a creature today.
When I was going through the books, I didn't, I didn't
remember using this creature andit's probably easily easy to
pass by this creature when you look at it because it seems kind

(02:03):
of dull at first when you look at the picture.
If you open up the fiendfolio and turn to page 41, we're
looking at the Gumbato. Looking at this creature in the
fiendfolio. I mean, it looks like someone
started to draw a really creepy ghost and I don't know, like it
just like forgot to draw the rest of it.

(02:25):
I I don't know it, it really isn't that great of a drawing.
No offense to the artists of thebook.
It just doesn't look. It looks like it wasn't
finished. It's got claws.
It looks like a ghost that you don't know what it is exactly by
looking at the picture. And I know most people when
they're flipping through these books, they're looking for
certain creatures and flipping around and this creature

(02:48):
probably just went right past them.
It is a rare appearing one day armored class of 6.
Movement is special hit dice of four.
It's 100% in its layer. It's got three attacks,
1D81-D41D4 special attack, nil, nil.
It's chaotic neutral, low intelligence.
Nothing else is really differentabout it.

(03:10):
These extraordinary looking creatures are man sized or
powerful human torsos and two arms ending in a very sharp
claws. Supported on the thin but very
strong neck is the creature's head which is the skull, which
she really wouldn't know by looking at the picture.
You just it just looks kind of like a creepy head with teeth

(03:31):
that I mean I guess it could be but whatever.
Usually of animal, but sometimesa primitive man that does not
look like an animal to me. It looks like a weird skull with
teeth I guess. The lower part of the creature's
body consists of a cylinder of muscle and skin which should be
compressed spring style and released below which are three

(03:55):
long and thin single toed feet which you don't even see in the
picture. It's a manner.
It's a manner of locomotion since its legs.
Since it lacks legs as such as aseries of springs, it jumps
vertically. It can reach up to 14 feet high
ceiling with its head and when moving horizontally it's a speed

(04:18):
of equivalent of 12 inch movement rate, which is not that
bad. The Gumbato's normal form of
attack is to stand upright in this layer, which is a pit some
6 foot deep with its head just at ground level by the shore.
By shoring up the sides of the pit, it can create a cover of

(04:39):
rock, wood, rags, and old bones so that it appears so that an
approaching so that an approaching adventure.
The pit is hidden and only the skull is seen, apparently simply
lying on the ground just laying there.
If a if a living creature comes within 2 feet of the edge of the

(05:00):
pit, IE 4 feet or so of the skull head, the creature will
spring out and attack in the first instance with a bite for
only 1D points of damage, and thereafter with a bite and its
claw, each of which inflicts 1D four points of damage if melee

(05:21):
is going. If melee is going against it, it
will flee rather than fight death.
So on the odds of it being defeated it just like not screw
this I'm out. If a gumbato kills a victim, it
will ignore all booty except coins, gems, and small pieces of

(05:42):
jewelry. These are taken into the pit and
stored either on the pit floor or hidden in a cash hole in the
pit side. Packed tightly with the earth,
though essentially a solitary creature, a gun bottle will
often dig its pit nearby those of the others of its kind.

(06:03):
In places where bones are common, as many as eight of
these creatures may be found have dug pits quite close
together, although they do not appear actually to communicate
with one another. It's kind of an interesting
creature when you think about it, that it'll essentially
gather in type of in like kind of a small little community and

(06:26):
a little knit community, but it's not apparent if they
actually communicate or talk to one another.
They just want to be near one another.
And it's interesting that it lays a trap of maybe like skulls
and rocks and just puts itself down there like it's nothing to
jump out and surprise anything that comes within its feet while
adventures it says, I wonder if it's monster.

(06:47):
I mean, I wonder if it's animalstoo.
I would think so, but I'm not understanding the point of why
they're collecting things in their pit, like riches and
stuff. I mean, it's just kind of one of
those Oh, shiny and I'm going tohide it from things because
these are just creatures that are like, oh, and it's just, you
know, I'm trying to say I could see like other type creatures

(07:09):
like cobalt orcs, things like that, having gold and stuff
because they can use it for trading and, you know, purpose
of buying things. But these things just kind of
chill in its own little pit and store it in there because that's
what they do. Looking around, I see that this

(07:29):
creature has an entry in second edition.
It has an entry in Pathfinder. I don't think it's in 3rd
edition. I couldn't find a reference to
it though I could be wrong. I couldn't find some of my
monster books for 3rd edition, so I was looking online for it.
I could not see it. I did see it in the Pathfinder
D20 SRD online. I did see someone did write it

(07:56):
up way back in 2002 for Nworld for the Gammato for 3rd edition.
So I don't know, maybe there wasn't a actual official entry
and somebody wanted it, but we have it here.
Looks like looking at 2nd edition the creature changed
quite a bit more detailed. Its head looks more like an

(08:19):
animal skull that you would findin the desert or something.
It's more muscular looking. Along with it you can see it's
kind of feet type thing that it would move across the ground or
spring up with, giving a lot more detail compared to what it
looks like in first edition. We also see it in 5th edition.

(08:44):
The SRD actually has a creature for the creature entry for the
Gumbato. I don't know if it's officially
in or it's just in the SRD website online.
I don't have 5 ebooks anymore. I don't remember seeing or using
this creature whatsoever. It really doesn't.
It doesn't mention any of its things like pits or anything

(09:08):
like that. And it's an honor class of 12
actually compared to its armor class of 6.
So it should have a higher armorclass of 14 ish.
It's got 32 hit points and five.Yeah, it doesn't really.
Yeah. It's to challenge rating too.

(09:29):
So it's not that big of a creature, but it's it's not
really a powerful creature. Second edition.
It has more information, but I didn't see much of it in
anything else. So it's a creature that's kind
of lasted. No, I could see it's I find it
interesting that it springs so that the creature has this

(09:51):
ability to look like coil, not coil up, but like scratch down
and buoying up and and like attack.
So I'm wondering if maybe killing this thing, you can
harvest some of it to maybe use it from in some type of way to
to spring or maybe some type of way to make some magical boots

(10:14):
or something that let you jump alittle higher.
I could see a magic user of highlevel and an inventive player
taking this creature's, I don't know, muscular ability in the
bottom and figuring out a way toconcoct something with boots and
a magical research or something.I could see that happening and

(10:38):
having you the ability of every time you leap or jump, you can
do it with, you know, two times the ability or something.
So if you could jump 6 feet withno problem, you could jump 12
feet with no problem. Not not you can't really jump 6
feet with no problem. But just an example what I'm
talking about some type of magicuser research.

(10:58):
And if you have a really inventive player, I could see
them doing this and it would take some time, but I could see
that really happening now, ways that you as Adm could probably
use this creature as, you know, a ring of skulls in a barren
field. And players see this and they're

(11:18):
kind of suspicious about when they see it.
But most of the time you can putsome decoys in.
Most of the time they see that they will just walk right by it
or not bother with it. Now you put enough of those down
there. Maybe the first time they will
check it just to see and you, that's your decoy.
And maybe you put a second one in further around then make it

(11:41):
another decoy. Don't make it a perfect circle
or just put a couple on a line. Like it looks like they're just
kind of laying there these little like, you know, desert
skull things and they they checkit and it's it's nothing.
OK, OK. And then they move on to the
next one and nothing. They're like, all right, just
skulls. It's fine.

(12:03):
Generally, they're not going to check each one of them, but, you
know, you have that second decoyjust in case.
And then finally, when they get past the third one, that's when
the creature springs junk gets them.
I was thinking like a a road band is littered with like
silver. Each Steph puts step forward

(12:23):
puts you inside another's pitch trigger zone.
So like these creatures actuallylayout a trap.
They're not really intelligent. They're low intelligent but
doesn't mean they aren't stupid.I mean, low intelligence
creatures can still hunt and tryto trap prey when it comes to

(12:46):
trying to get their food or something.
Because you're thinking about they're springing out because
they want food. They're trying to kill something
to eat it, attack it, get gain whatever treasure this creature
has if it should have that. So why not leave a little a
silver here, silver here and allof a sudden like, you know, a

(13:07):
little pile of gold and the player character runs over to it
and boom, this thing comes striking out.
I see it doing that. I mean, that's not that
difficult to do that. So I don't know, it could be an
interesting thing. Now, I know these creatures
usually just kind of chill in their pit, but it doesn't say

(13:29):
that they don't leave their pit. Now, what if these creatures
decided that during the day theykind of chill out because that's
when a lot of people travel. But at night, they squiggle out
of their layers. They cover it up so people can't
find it, and they go hunting. And they go, right, you know,
springing into the forest or something, and try to find

(13:52):
people that are camping. And that's what they do on their
nightly routine. They go out hunting.
Maybe they go out and pack sincethey like to live.
They're like, you know, somewhatform a society.
Maybe they will hunt together. If you imagine, like eight of
these things springing into yourcampground in the middle of the
night. You're poking at the fire and
you're like, good to do. You're on watch and everybody's

(14:14):
sound asleep. And all of a sudden these things
sprang into the camp and you're like, oh, shoot, trying to wake
everybody up. And these creatures are
attacking while you're doing this.
And people don't have their armor on because you don't sleep
with your armor on. So now you have a disadvantage.
You got your your fighter quickly trying to put his armor
on, your clerk trying to put hisarmor on.

(14:35):
Maybe while the one person who'son watch is trying to protect
them. There's a lot of possibilities.
These things could maybe I couldsee that, that they're low
intelligent, but doesn't mean they can't approach things.
So why wouldn't they? Just while they're hunting at
night, maybe there's a nearby village or a very small hamlet,

(14:59):
village or whatever you want to call it.
And then maybe they go in, They go in there and they start
trying to pick off small children, or they jump into a
house or maybe an elderly personor something and they eat them.
I mean, you could really make these creatures kind of scary.
I mean, they're the way they look and bounce around.

(15:20):
The average NPC normal common person would be freak the heck
out when it comes to these things.
I could see. I would actually think that's a
kind of a cool thing. They come bouncing into a little
small, maybe new community that's just tents or something
because you know, new communities always start small.

(15:41):
Maybe they have tents as they'rebuilding houses and stuff.
These creatures come bouncing inat night and they attack these
people sleeping in tents. They're not that great a tent.
So they pop into those things and jump, jump, jump, jump up
and try to get them and bite them before they could scream.
And it could be terrifying and it could be an adventure hook

(16:02):
that the adventurers happened upon this new village that
they're building. And the mayor or the town
representative at this point is like, yes, we have these
creatures that attack at night. They're weird.
We can't find them, but they have like a skull like head and

(16:22):
they bounce around. And he describes it with the
claws and everything. He says they usually happen to
come every other Thursday and they come into the village and
they attack and we try to wait for them.
But they seem kind of clever about it.
You know, we need some brave adventures to go out and kill
these things. And he describes the skull and

(16:43):
everything. So now the adventures have to go
out and try to figure out where these creatures are.
Maybe the layer is hidden somewhere really interesting.
Now, if you're an adventurer andyou're out in the about and know
about these things there you it's hard to tell where they
are. I mean, you could see a skull on

(17:04):
the ground and think it's them and it's not.
But you got to you got to use that 10 foot pole on.
Remember the old 10 foot pole? Tap, tap, tap on the ground.
If you see those skulls around, take that 10 foot pole out
before you get near it. Tap on the ground here to see if
it triggers a thing to pop out. If it does, then you know it's

(17:24):
there. I mean, that's one of the only
tricks you can do. You could maybe fire arrows at
it that would trigger it. I don't something like that, but
this is a really interesting creature and I think that there
are ways to take this creature that most people would think is

(17:45):
boring looking and make it into something really amazing.
And I think I've given you quitea bit of ideas here.
No matter what, the addition is to use these creatures in a way
that's just not, oh hey, there'sa creature skull on the ground.
Oh my God, it attacked me while I'm walking by type deal.
I don't know. Tell me what you think in the
comments when it comes to this creature.

(18:08):
I'd like to know your thoughts on it and if it's in the edition
that you play, I want to hear your comments on that too.
So I'm going to head out for today.
Hopefully you have a great day. I will see you next time.
So keep original, keep it old school.
Goodnight and God bless everybody.
