as we begin to barrel into this holiday season.

We our trees are up. We always leave the week of
Thanksgiving. So we learned years ago, like
growing up, the tradition was the tree goes up the Saturday
after Thanksgiving, never before.
And I love that tradition because you had Thanksgiving and
then you bam, you know, the Christmas Fiesta started.
Fiesta. That's a new word.
Anyway, it started. But because we travel, we began
(01:30):
realizing, hey, if we wait untilwe get back, which is not until
the Saturday or Sunday after Thanksgiving, and then everybody
goes back to school and back to work.
It's like another week after Thanksgiving before we can get
our tree up. And then we're losing that time
that we could be sitting by the lights and having all of that
feeling. So we started putting it up the
week before, the week before. So, so, and this week, this time
(01:54):
my in laws came in last weekend,which was awesome.
So we put it up the week before,the week before, the week
before. So we've had our Christmas tree
up for some time now and I just love it.
I just love it. I love the feel.
Christmas just has this, just the lights, the kind of sparkle,
that little magic in the air, you know, it just makes the home
(02:14):
feel more peaceful and joyful and cozy.
Even though I live in Florida, Ialways thought that Christmas
would be really hard when we moved to Florida.
We've been here 11 years now, and I thought it would be really
hard to have Christmas in Florida.
How do you do that? You.
Know it's not cold. There's palm trees sometimes you
could literally get in the pool.I mean, what is going on?
(02:35):
But actually I realized, man, nosetting the environment of our
home, which is something I talk about on here a lot, is how we
can set the environment and the mood of our home, the emotional
environment of our home so that our children and our spouses and
our friends and our family and whoever comes into our home can
just feel this embrace. I pray that they feel a love
(02:59):
that is definitely grounded in the Holy Spirit that maybe they
don't even know what that is that they're feeling.
But I love for my home to just wrap around us in a way.
And so Christmas is especially atime that that happens and
getting up early. I usually have my morning, my
God time or whatever outside because I live in Florida.
I can typically always do that. But when the tree is up, Oh my
(03:22):
gosh. But it's still dark outside and
the lights are all down and I'm just sitting there with my
coffee and my Bible, like looking at the lights of the
Christmas tree. It's just a fun time.
So that makes me feel so good. If you are a regular listener of
the podcast, you are probably maybe you noticed that I have
been on like a month hiatus and no, I didn't announce it or say
anything, but nobody was beatingdown my door looking for the
(03:45):
next episode so. I'm assuming I'm.
Assuming you all survived just fine so but main reason you
can't hear the cold in my head. I think I've had two colds since
I went on this hiatus. But the main reason that I did
that was because my total focus for the last month was this
incredible, exciting opportunityI had to bring a women's
(04:07):
conference to our church, Rock Harbor Church in Melbourne
Beach, FL. And if you were there, this is
going to be a little bit of a repeat.
But there are four other amazingwomen speakers, authors, Bible
teachers, podcasters, all of whom have been on this show.
So me, Sandy Cooper, Mary Kay Tiller, Teresa Whiting and Angie
(04:28):
Bauman. All.
Come together, we are just a group, like a mastermind behind
the scenes. We're on Boxer all the time and
we have been pouring into and loving each other for the past 2
1/2 years, I think. But as we only connected because
of like the Internet and podcasting and the weird ways,
you know, those things happen. But when we connected, we
(04:49):
realized, wow, we are something special here and what we have
here, it's going to use. So we have been hoping and
dreaming and kind of planning and waiting for everything to
fall together to do something asa group.
And we have come together last last year.
Angie Bauman writes She does study on university is her
(05:11):
organization where she does online Bible studies on a
continual basis. It's wonderful.
You should definitely look into it.

And So what she does with that is she teaches a Bible study
method that's very powerful, butalso very approachable.
And about a year ago she tapped the other four of us and said,
hey, I want to do a study calledthe women focusing on what she
(05:34):
says, the unlikely carriers of the gospel.
And it's the women who show up in the genealogy of Christ, and
they all have, They all come from a place and a story and a
background that would not have ever been expected to be used
for great purpose, let alone in the genealogy and have such an
impact on the coming of the Messiah and ultimately Jesus
(05:57):
coming Savior of the world. And these women get actually
acknowledged and mentioned in the genealogy where it was such
a patriarch, patriarch, patriarch, patriarch, you know
what I mean? It was a man dominant society in
the sense that they didn't see the value of including women in
(06:21):
genealogies and things like thatwhen you're trying to point to
someone's great lineage. But yet God doesn't operate that
way. He sees all of us and these
women who were extremely unlikely and mostly many of them
outcast in their day when they turned their hearts towards him.
(06:42):
He used them. In the most powerful,
significant way possible and totally redeemed and transformed
their stories. So we each took a different
woman and we put together the Women Bible Study, which is
available on Amazon. I'll link to that as well.
So with the Women's Conference, this was our first time to bring
that teaching live all together as one group.
(07:03):
And we got to do that two weeks ago at our church and the five
of us got to speak. Angie teaches her study method
and each of us gives our 20 minute talk about the woman that
we got to focus on for this study.
For me, it was Rahab. And it was such a fun day.
A whole day. We had lunch, you know, it's
beautiful weather, we have picnics outside.
It was so fun. Lots of door prizes.
(07:24):
So one thing if you or your church or someone you know is
looking for a women's conference, considering doing a
full day or a multi day conference and something like
that. Sounds fun to have these 5 crazy
women who are just so connected come in and share with you
aspects of these women whose stories were totally transformed

So, but what I'm going to do right now is I am actually going

rehab. And I mean, I say this in the
video now, it is a video. If you are listening to this,
that's fine. You'll still get great stuff out
of it. But if you want to watch the

might get a little bit more understanding of what's going on
because I do have an object lesson part way through it and

you can see what I'm doing. But you'll still be able to
figure it out over the audio if that's your jam.
So talking about Rahab, when I say Rahab, if you know anything
about Rahab from the Bible, the next word that comes into your
mind is prostitute. But in this session, I want to
open our eyes to the fact that the labels we all carry labels,
(09:17):
whether it's from hearts in the past, whether it's things that
people have put on us, whether it's choices we have made that
have credited certain labels to our name, or whether it's a
voice that Satan just messing inour head, repeating something
over and over and over again to keep us stuck and keep us down.
And as we go into the holiday season, there's joy in that.
(09:41):
But there can also be hard struggles as we may be around
family or friends who have knownus a long time and maybe they
still think of us as this and yet we've grown or we know God
has bigger things for us. But everybody still sees me
this. Or maybe we still see ourselves
with this label, whatever it is.And I'm going to go through some
(10:04):
of that in this talk. But the key here is that God is
the only one who can label us. And we get labels, but we can
choose whether to lean into those labels or whether we are
going to stop and find out. Who does God say I am and what
is the label that I truly carry?Even if I never shake this label
(10:25):
this side of heaven, I want to stand on what I know regardless
of how I feel, and I want to know the label that He puts on
me. Because that.
Is the true essence of who I am.So I want to encourage you guys
in that share this talk with you.
I hope that it is helpful and empowering as we go into this
amazing season. And it's also again, of course,
about. A woman.

That, we will find, came from a very unlikely place, a very
excluded place, and was includedby the God of the universe in
the lineage of Jesus and the coming of the Messiah, which we
are getting ready to celebrate. Here and now.

So I stand before you now about to do one of the hardest things
I've ever done in my life. I have to give a speech in less
than 20 minutes. So.
So if everybody wants to put the20 minute timer on your phone
(11:29):
and they all go off at the same time, I'll know to sit down and
shut up. I get a little excited.
So there's so much good stuff here.
But if I say Rahab, what do you think?
You can say it loud. I know we're in church, but you
can still say the P word prostitute, right?
We all think that when we hear Rahab, we think prostitute.
(11:49):
Well, when Angie first gave me the task that the woman I was
going to do was Rahab the prostitute, I got really excited
because I'm like, this woman wasa bit of a rebel.
She was definitely willing to goagainst the grain.
She would take some risks. She had moxie.
Then Angie told me that the title of the chapter that I was
(12:11):
responsible with helping her with is called Rahab the Kind
Citizen. What?
And she gave me the key verse. Proverbs 1422.
Do they not go astray who deviseevil and wonder from the way of
righteousness? But kindness and truth will be
(12:32):
to those who devise good. And I still didn't see it.
I'm like, OK, OK. I'm thinking like, I got this,
this rough rebel prostitute, andshe's a kind citizen.
No, no, I, no, no. But that is why Angie is such an
incredible Bible teacher. She knows how to pull things out
(12:53):
and take us down a path that maybe we never noticed before.
And it opens our eyes to ways tosee stuff in the word that we
might have missed. And it.
So I began to dig and I began totake this challenge.
And as I did, I started using some of the study methods that
Angie teaches. And I started to realize, OK,
the word kind also means favor, kindness and favor.
(13:18):
So if you don't know, the Bible was not written in English.
It was written originally in Hebrew and Greek.
So they had to translate into English.
So when you translate a word, there's not always one
particular word that fits the original language.
So sometimes there's different words there, and Angie's going
to show you how to find some of that.
You're going to all leave here feeling like theological
scholars when Angie gets done with you because it's so easy
and approachable yet so powerful.
(13:39):
So that's one of the things we're going to learn here today.
But I found this word kindness means favor.
So now Rahab the kind citizen becomes Rahab the favoured
citizen. OK, I can run with this.
So let's set up the story. If you know the song Sing with
Me, Joshua fought the battle of Jericho, Jericho, Jericho.
(14:02):
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho.
I'm the only one with the VBS and the walls came tumbling
down. All right, so so that's how
we're starting this story. But before all of that happened,
Joshua sent 2 spies into the city of Jericho.
He said you need to go in there and you need to find out what
we're up against. So these two spies go in, and
the Bible's kind of funny sometimes in that it leaves out
(14:24):
details. It's like they went into the
House of the prostitute. I'm like, well, what?
What, what they how did that happen?
OK, I guess we're not supposed to know that part must not be
the point. But they somehow connect with
the rehab, the prostitute, and she takes them into her home.
And the officials of the city have had word that the spies are
here and they're coming after us.
So they start going around and they somehow believe that rehab,
(14:48):
that they they know spies went into rehab's house.
So they come in, they're bangingon rehab's door.
Meanwhile, she has taken these two spies to the roof and hidden
them under flax like grain that she was drying on the roof.
And so I can't imagine, if you really think about the Bible,
sometimes they're like laying still under this itchy grain on
the roof, waiting. How weird.
(15:08):
But that's where they're hiding,OK.
And so greyhounds, like, I don'tknow what you're talking about.
They came here, but they went that way.
You know, it's kind of like one of those Looney Tunes
commercials, right? So they're gone.
And I, I don't know. So then she goes up to the spies
after the officials have left and they believe that the people
have already taken off. She goes to the spies and she
says these words. We have heard how the Lord dried
(15:32):
up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt,
and how you completely destroyedother cities and other kings,
all of them east of the Jordan. When we heard of it, our hearts
melted in fear, and everyone's courage failed them because of
you. For the Lord your God is God in
(15:53):
heaven above and on earth below.Now then, please swear to me by
the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I
have shown kindness to you. She was kind.
She even called herself the kindcitizen and I missed it all
along. So then she makes them a deal,
their safe escape in exchange for her and her family being
(16:14):
spared when the Israelites come and take down Jericho.
So she Rahab devised devised good.
As our verse said. If we look back, it says that
kindness and truth will be to those who devise good.
I like that word devise sounds alittle crappy, right?
So she devised a good and kindness was her reward and then
(16:36):
God showed me something else. This was like, oh, I love it
when you're reading the Bible and you could have read the same
thing a million times. But Hebrews tells us the word of
God is alive and active. The Holy Spirit is our teacher.
So sometimes we're reading something we read so many times
and then we read it again. Also, it's like, oh, the angels
are singing, the lights come down, and it like jumps off the
(16:58):
page. And so God showed me as I'm
thinking about kindness because Angie challenged me, because I
was never thinking about kindness in this story.
I had all kinds of other thoughts.
God's kindness of revealing Himself to Rahab is what started
this entire story. God had a plan to devise good
for the nation of Israel for protecting the line of the
(17:21):
Messiah, and it started with Hiskindness to reveal Himself and
His greatness to a prostitute named Rahab.
See, she didn't have the Holy Spirit.
This was pre Holy Spirit. That's after Jesus is gone.
So she didn't have the Spirit ofGod living in her.
And we only get the Holy Spirit of God living in us when we put
our faith in Jesus. She'd never heard of Jesus.
(17:42):
She didn't have a local church. She was a prostitute living in a
Pagan city, and she was not partof God's people.
The chosen people of the Israelites, Old Testament, the
Israelites, you are my people, and through your line will come
the Messiah, Jesus comes. New Testament.
Every single person who puts their faith in Jesus Christ
becomes his people. And so at the time it was the
(18:05):
children of Israel are God's chosen people and those who
believe on their God. And so she had none of that.
She's just this prostitute living in this city.
But so good, so good. She'd never heard of any of
this. She was a complete outsider, yet
God chose her. God's kindness, he revealed
(18:29):
himself. Do you see that?
Rahab said the Lord your God is God.
He is the Lord of heaven and earth.
She didn't say he's a God. She said he is the God.
Somehow, without the teaching ofthe Hebrew law, without the
teaching of the Israelites and the priest without any of that,
she knew the God of the universewas the one true God, Yahweh was
(18:52):
Lord. She could not know that without
God's kindness first prompting that knowledge and revealing
himself to this prostitute in this Pagan city.
Wow. Wow.
He had a plan this whole time. He had a plan.
But let me get on because I would not be me without a
soapbox moment. So let me get on my soapbox and
just for a second, let me say wedon't know why she was a
(19:13):
prostitute. Maybe she couldn't feed her
kids. Maybe she'd never been taught a
marketable trade and all she hadwas herself to give in order to
feed her family. We don't know.
We really don't know, but it shehad been taught to do whatever
she could to survive. And it doesn't make the work OK,
(19:40):
but it should make us stop when we see somebody's label and not
be too quick to judge or count them out, right.
So God devised kindness towards rehab.
I'll get off my box. God devised kindness towards
rehab and in turn made a decision.
(20:01):
Ray had made a decision as a response to God's kindness to
her. Just like when we accept Jesus,
God in His kindness draws us. He tugs at our hearts, and then
we have a choice to make. We can receive His kindness, put
our faith in Him, and become part of His people.
Or we can say thanks, but I'm just going to stick with what I
know. We do have a choice there.
(20:23):
So Rahab took what the Lord in His kindness had revealed to
her, and by the power of the faith stirred up in her heart by
the Almighty God of Israel, she devised good.
And in turn, the God of the universe saw her faith and her
boldness, and He gave her kindness and favor as she and
her household were spared when the walls came tumbling down.
(20:47):
So if we go back to Proverbs 1422, kindness and truth are to
who? All those who devise good.
Any one of us who takes God at His word, puts our faith in him
and steps out in his strength todevise good, His kindness and
His favor, it's on us. It's running after us like that
(21:08):
song we sang earlier. So how did this all play out for
Rahab? So the first chapter of the New
Testament, which we spoke about briefly, and you're going to
probably hear a lot of references to that.
But today it begins by tracing the lineage of Jesus, Matthew,
chapter one. First thing we see is a long
line of names that we probably want to skip because we're like,
(21:28):
I can't even say half these names, but don't, but don't
because as we learn, there's a lot to learn.
And as we read, right, Nicki, ifyou've listened to the last
what's her story podcast interview, it was with Nicki
Anderson and she said the exact same thing in her stories.
Like you see all these names andyou're like, why, man?
As you start to read and you start to learn stories, things
(21:52):
jump out at you and you're like,and it gets so exciting and you
don't, if you don't have that kind of emotional visceral
reaction to things like that's OK.
That's kind of a Jenny thing. You can just be like, and you'll
still get the same spirit. OK, Just just so you know, you
don't have to be as crazy as I am.
So it begins with Abraham, this lineage line, and it continues
(22:14):
to list a lot of really hard to pronounce names until it gets to
Jesus the Messiah, the Savior ofthe world.
In the middle of that list we find these words, Neshan, the
father of Solomon. Solomon, the father of Boaz,
whose mother was Rahab, Boaz thefather of Obed, whose mother was
Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of King
(22:37):
David. Did you catch that?
Rahab the prostitute was the great great grandmother of King
David. We don't find out in the Old
Testament what happened to her. We just know that when the walls
came tumbling down, they went in, they got her and her family,
and they let them camp around the outside of the Israelites.
(22:58):
Well, bet somehow she must have eventually gotten into that camp
because she didn't just get intothat camp, but she got into some
kind of marriage where she became in the lineage of Christ,
the great great grandmother of King David.
One of those moments, right? How cool is that?
(23:18):
Her actions led to the salvationnot only of her family, not only
of the Jewish people at the time, but ultimately helped to
pave the way for the salvation of the entire world because she
devised good, acted on her faithin the Lord, and then his
kindness and his truth was poured down into her.
I can imagine after she and her family were saved at the battle
(23:42):
of Jericho. And she's saying to the Lord,
God, thank you. You are God, thank you.
You're saving me and my family and God's sitting there going,
baby girl, you don't even know the half of it right?
We we see in the moment, God sees it all.
And while she knew something, hegot it done a great, awesome
thing. It was the tip of the iceberg or
(24:04):
Rahab the prostitute. So the prostitute label never
fully left her here on earth. She was still known that way
quite frequently. When we get to the New
Testament, we read even in Hebrews Chapter 11, if you speak
church and ease, you know that Hebrews Chapter 11 is the faith
(24:25):
chapter. In that chapter, Rahab is
mentioned among the great pillars of our faith, and she's
solely mentioned because of how great her faith is.
But yet she is called the prostitute Rahab.
It's still there. Her label never changed, but its
significance did. I want you to get this.
(24:45):
It went from reflecting her story to showing God's glory.
Even if your label doesn't leaveyou, it can go from reflecting
your story to showing God's glory.
The same can be true for any of us today who will call Him Lord.
Now when we hear her name, instead of reflecting on her
mistakes, we marvel at God's love and His willingness to use
(25:08):
any and all of us to build His Kingdom and share His love.
We all carry a lot of labels, but what power they will have in
determining our outcome and our story depends on how much we let
those labels carry us. So oh labels, I hope this works.
So I have AI was able to come upwith a lot of bad labels and I'm
(25:31):
just going to be honest, I only had to look outside of myself
for a few of them. Whether it is a label that
others have put on us, whether it is a label that our past
choices have credited to us, or whether it is a label that Satan
keeps whispered in our ear just to keep us stagnant.
(25:52):
Maybe you've heard you're stupid.
Maybe you've heard you're too much.
You know what's really funny? I'm going to maybe you've heard
you're not enough. But you know, what's really
funny is Satan has told me both of these my whole life.
And it wasn't until a retreat I was at in 2019 and we were asked
(26:15):
to really just like listen to those lies and let God reveal
those to you that I realized I was hearing both of these.
And I'm like, that can't be right.
And that's a relevant Satan. You're so dumb, right?
Amanda, you were there. I was like Margie, like really?
He kept telling me you're too much.
I don't know where that comes from.
I'm never, and you're not enough.
(26:37):
Well, that obviously was a lie, because there were the major
contradictions. One of them's a lie, at least.
All right. You're used to goods.
Maybe based on some choices you've made.
Maybe you're lazy. Maybe you hear that you're a
disappointment. Maybe it's unclean.
Maybe it's a murderer. Some of you will understand if
(27:01):
this label is in your head. You know why.
Unwanted loser, unlovable bad mom, ugly addict, worthless slob
(27:29):
no matter how hard I try. Glossy.
I've heard that one a few times.Show off.
Going to let that one sit. Harsh.
(27:50):
My daughter encouraged me to putthe B word there because she
said that's the label that most women carry.
But I left that off. But you can put it there if
that's the one Satan's whispering to you.
Because I told when she said that, I was like, do you have
any idea how many women do carrythat word in their head?
The minute we decide to speak our minds?
And I'm not up here for talking about all that stuff, but a lot
of us carry that. They're too harsh, they're too
(28:11):
much or divorced. Maybe that's been part of your
story and now you just talk. You wear this big D everywhere
you go. But today, in his kindness, when
God steps into the picture and we put our faith in Jesus.
(28:37):
His righteousness covers all those labels, and now we know
what he calls us Holy God calls us wonderful.
You are loved. You are the righteousness of
Christ. You are blameless.
(28:59):
You are forgiven. You are chosen, You are
redeemed, you are strong not by your strength, but by the
strength and power of the Holy Spirit of the living God living
in you. If you call Him Lord, no matter
(29:23):
what label you came in here carrying, you can walk out today
knowing His banner over you is love today and His kindness.
God is devising great things foreach and everyone of you.
He has a plan for you. He wants to give you a new
label, whether you've accepted Him or whether you've never made
that decision today. He wants to break those old
(29:46):
labels off of you once and for all.
God alone has the right to define us.
He is the label maker. Funny, right?
That one's not in the Bible. I That's when you think of the
names of God. That doesn't usually come up.
He is the label maker. Let God be your label maker.
(30:08):
And when you hear those negativelabels, stop it immediately.
And who am I really? What does God say about me?
I may still carry a label, but now instead of reflecting my
story, may reflect His glory. He includes the excluded.
He restores the outcasts. He has used adulterers, murders,
(30:28):
cheaters, liars, prostitutes, and slaves.
And that's just in the Old Testament, actually just in like
the first five books, Ephesians 320 amplified now unto him, to
God be the glory. This same God knows our hearts,
and when we give our lives to him, He will use us to build a
(30:50):
legacy that will far outlast anything in this world.
Lord God, you are the label maker.
Lord, thank you that even if it's choices we've made that
have brought the labels on ourselves, you are so much
bigger than our messes and we are not powerful enough to mess
(31:10):
up your plan. You may have to take a detour
that's not exactly what you would have done in the best of
circumstances. But nothing surprises you.
And you already know the end from the beginning.
You know the messes we're going to make, the messes we have
made, And you have a plan to work and weave your will and
your power in our lives and not around us, but with us, in spite
(31:33):
of us. You're going to use us in the
midst of your plan. You're not going to say, oh,
Nope, can't use that one. You, Lord, you see us and you
say, oh, yeah, I can use that. Because when we give our mess to

We our trees are up. We always leave the week of
Thanksgiving. So we learned years ago, like
growing up, the tradition was the tree goes up the Saturday
after Thanksgiving, never before.
And I love that tradition because you had Thanksgiving and
then you bam, you know, the Christmas Fiesta started.
Fiesta. That's a new word.
Anyway, it started. But because we travel, we began
(01:30):
realizing, hey, if we wait untilwe get back, which is not until
the Saturday or Sunday after Thanksgiving, and then everybody
goes back to school and back to work.
It's like another week after Thanksgiving before we can get
our tree up. And then we're losing that time
that we could be sitting by the lights and having all of that
feeling. So we started putting it up the
week before, the week before. So, so, and this week, this time
(01:54):
my in laws came in last weekend,which was awesome.
So we put it up the week before,the week before, the week
before. So we've had our Christmas tree
up for some time now and I just love it.
I just love it. I love the feel.
Christmas just has this, just the lights, the kind of sparkle,
that little magic in the air, you know, it just makes the home
(02:14):
feel more peaceful and joyful and cozy.
Even though I live in Florida, Ialways thought that Christmas
would be really hard when we moved to Florida.
We've been here 11 years now, and I thought it would be really
hard to have Christmas in Florida.
How do you do that? You.
Know it's not cold. There's palm trees sometimes you
could literally get in the pool.I mean, what is going on?
(02:35):
But actually I realized, man, nosetting the environment of our
home, which is something I talk about on here a lot, is how we
can set the environment and the mood of our home, the emotional
environment of our home so that our children and our spouses and
our friends and our family and whoever comes into our home can
just feel this embrace. I pray that they feel a love
(02:59):
that is definitely grounded in the Holy Spirit that maybe they
don't even know what that is that they're feeling.
But I love for my home to just wrap around us in a way.
And so Christmas is especially atime that that happens and
getting up early. I usually have my morning, my
God time or whatever outside because I live in Florida.
I can typically always do that. But when the tree is up, Oh my
(03:22):
gosh. But it's still dark outside and
the lights are all down and I'm just sitting there with my
coffee and my Bible, like looking at the lights of the
Christmas tree. It's just a fun time.
So that makes me feel so good. If you are a regular listener of
the podcast, you are probably maybe you noticed that I have
been on like a month hiatus and no, I didn't announce it or say
anything, but nobody was beatingdown my door looking for the
(03:45):
next episode so. I'm assuming I'm.
Assuming you all survived just fine so but main reason you
can't hear the cold in my head. I think I've had two colds since
I went on this hiatus. But the main reason that I did
that was because my total focus for the last month was this
incredible, exciting opportunityI had to bring a women's
(04:07):
conference to our church, Rock Harbor Church in Melbourne
Beach, FL. And if you were there, this is
going to be a little bit of a repeat.
But there are four other amazingwomen speakers, authors, Bible
teachers, podcasters, all of whom have been on this show.
So me, Sandy Cooper, Mary Kay Tiller, Teresa Whiting and Angie
(04:28):
Bauman. All.
Come together, we are just a group, like a mastermind behind
the scenes. We're on Boxer all the time and
we have been pouring into and loving each other for the past 2
1/2 years, I think. But as we only connected because
of like the Internet and podcasting and the weird ways,
you know, those things happen. But when we connected, we
(04:49):
realized, wow, we are something special here and what we have
here, it's going to use. So we have been hoping and
dreaming and kind of planning and waiting for everything to
fall together to do something asa group.
And we have come together last last year.
Angie Bauman writes She does study on university is her
(05:11):
organization where she does online Bible studies on a
continual basis. It's wonderful.
You should definitely look into it.

And So what she does with that is she teaches a Bible study
method that's very powerful, butalso very approachable.
And about a year ago she tapped the other four of us and said,
hey, I want to do a study calledthe women focusing on what she
(05:34):
says, the unlikely carriers of the gospel.
And it's the women who show up in the genealogy of Christ, and
they all have, They all come from a place and a story and a
background that would not have ever been expected to be used
for great purpose, let alone in the genealogy and have such an
impact on the coming of the Messiah and ultimately Jesus
(05:57):
coming Savior of the world. And these women get actually
acknowledged and mentioned in the genealogy where it was such
a patriarch, patriarch, patriarch, patriarch, you know
what I mean? It was a man dominant society in
the sense that they didn't see the value of including women in
(06:21):
genealogies and things like thatwhen you're trying to point to
someone's great lineage. But yet God doesn't operate that
way. He sees all of us and these
women who were extremely unlikely and mostly many of them
outcast in their day when they turned their hearts towards him.
(06:42):
He used them. In the most powerful,
significant way possible and totally redeemed and transformed
their stories. So we each took a different
woman and we put together the Women Bible Study, which is
available on Amazon. I'll link to that as well.
So with the Women's Conference, this was our first time to bring
that teaching live all together as one group.
(07:03):
And we got to do that two weeks ago at our church and the five
of us got to speak. Angie teaches her study method
and each of us gives our 20 minute talk about the woman that
we got to focus on for this study.
For me, it was Rahab. And it was such a fun day.
A whole day. We had lunch, you know, it's
beautiful weather, we have picnics outside.
It was so fun. Lots of door prizes.
(07:24):
So one thing if you or your church or someone you know is

women who are just so connected come in and share with you
aspects of these women whose stories were totally transformed

So, but what I'm going to do right now is I am actually going

rehab. And I mean, I say this in the

So talking about Rahab, when I say Rahab, if you know anything
about Rahab from the Bible, the next word that comes into your
mind is prostitute. But in this session, I want to
open our eyes to the fact that the labels we all carry labels,
(09:17):
whether it's from hearts in the past, whether it's things that
people have put on us, whether it's choices we have made that
have credited certain labels to our name, or whether it's a
voice that Satan just messing inour head, repeating something
over and over and over again to keep us stuck and keep us down.
And as we go into the holiday season, there's joy in that.
(09:41):
But there can also be hard struggles as we may be around
family or friends who have knownus a long time and maybe they
still think of us as this and yet we've grown or we know God
has bigger things for us. But everybody still sees me
this. Or maybe we still see ourselves
with this label, whatever it is.And I'm going to go through some
(10:04):
of that in this talk. But the key here is that God is
the only one who can label us. And we get labels, but we can
choose whether to lean into those labels or whether we are
going to stop and find out. Who does God say I am and what
is the label that I truly carry?Even if I never shake this label
(10:25):
this side of heaven, I want to stand on what I know regardless
of how I feel, and I want to know the label that He puts on
me. Because that.
Is the true essence of who I am.So I want to encourage you guys
in that share this talk with you.
I hope that it is helpful and empowering as we go into this
amazing season. And it's also again, of course,
about. A woman.

That, we will find, came from a very unlikely place, a very
excluded place, and was includedby the God of the universe in
the lineage of Jesus and the coming of the Messiah, which we
are getting ready to celebrate. Here and now.

So I stand before you now about to do one of the hardest things
I've ever done in my life. I have to give a speech in less
than 20 minutes. So.
So if everybody wants to put the20 minute timer on your phone
(11:29):
and they all go off at the same time, I'll know to sit down and
shut up. I get a little excited.
So there's so much good stuff here.
But if I say Rahab, what do you think?
You can say it loud. I know we're in church, but you
can still say the P word prostitute, right?
We all think that when we hear Rahab, we think prostitute.
(11:49):
Well, when Angie first gave me the task that the woman I was
going to do was Rahab the prostitute, I got really excited
because I'm like, this woman wasa bit of a rebel.
She was definitely willing to goagainst the grain.
She would take some risks. She had moxie.
Then Angie told me that the title of the chapter that I was
(12:11):
responsible with helping her with is called Rahab the Kind
Citizen. What?
And she gave me the key verse. Proverbs 1422.
Do they not go astray who deviseevil and wonder from the way of
righteousness? But kindness and truth will be
(12:32):
to those who devise good. And I still didn't see it.
I'm like, OK, OK. I'm thinking like, I got this,
this rough rebel prostitute, andshe's a kind citizen.
No, no, I, no, no. But that is why Angie is such an
incredible Bible teacher. She knows how to pull things out
(12:53):
and take us down a path that maybe we never noticed before.
And it opens our eyes to ways tosee stuff in the word that we
might have missed. And it.
So I began to dig and I began totake this challenge.
And as I did, I started using some of the study methods that
Angie teaches. And I started to realize, OK,
the word kind also means favor, kindness and favor.
(13:18):
So if you don't know, the Bible was not written in English.
It was written originally in Hebrew and Greek.
So they had to translate into English.
So when you translate a word, there's not always one
particular word that fits the original language.
So sometimes there's different words there, and Angie's going
to show you how to find some of that.
You're going to all leave here feeling like theological
scholars when Angie gets done with you because it's so easy
and approachable yet so powerful.
(13:39):
So that's one of the things we're going to learn here today.
But I found this word kindness means favor.
So now Rahab the kind citizen becomes Rahab the favoured
citizen. OK, I can run with this.
So let's set up the story. If you know the song Sing with
Me, Joshua fought the battle of Jericho, Jericho, Jericho.
(14:02):
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho.
I'm the only one with the VBS and the walls came tumbling
down. All right, so so that's how
we're starting this story. But before all of that happened,
Joshua sent 2 spies into the city of Jericho.
He said you need to go in there and you need to find out what
we're up against. So these two spies go in, and
the Bible's kind of funny sometimes in that it leaves out
(14:24):
details. It's like they went into the
House of the prostitute. I'm like, well, what?
What, what they how did that happen?
OK, I guess we're not supposed to know that part must not be
the point. But they somehow connect with
the rehab, the prostitute, and she takes them into her home.
And the officials of the city have had word that the spies are
here and they're coming after us.
So they start going around and they somehow believe that rehab,
(14:48):
that they they know spies went into rehab's house.
So they come in, they're bangingon rehab's door.
Meanwhile, she has taken these two spies to the roof and hidden
them under flax like grain that she was drying on the roof.
And so I can't imagine, if you really think about the Bible,
sometimes they're like laying still under this itchy grain on
the roof, waiting. How weird.
(15:08):
But that's where they're hiding,OK.
And so greyhounds, like, I don'tknow what you're talking about.
They came here, but they went that way.
You know, it's kind of like one of those Looney Tunes
commercials, right? So they're gone.
And I, I don't know. So then she goes up to the spies
after the officials have left and they believe that the people
have already taken off. She goes to the spies and she
says these words. We have heard how the Lord dried
(15:32):
up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt,
and how you completely destroyedother cities and other kings,
all of them east of the Jordan. When we heard of it, our hearts
melted in fear, and everyone's courage failed them because of
you. For the Lord your God is God in
(15:53):
heaven above and on earth below.Now then, please swear to me by
the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I
have shown kindness to you. She was kind.
She even called herself the kindcitizen and I missed it all
along. So then she makes them a deal,
their safe escape in exchange for her and her family being
(16:14):
spared when the Israelites come and take down Jericho.
So she Rahab devised devised good.
As our verse said. If we look back, it says that
kindness and truth will be to those who devise good.
I like that word devise sounds alittle crappy, right?
So she devised a good and kindness was her reward and then
(16:36):
God showed me something else. This was like, oh, I love it
when you're reading the Bible and you could have read the same
thing a million times. But Hebrews tells us the word of
God is alive and active. The Holy Spirit is our teacher.
So sometimes we're reading something we read so many times
and then we read it again. Also, it's like, oh, the angels
are singing, the lights come down, and it like jumps off the
(16:58):
page. And so God showed me as I'm
thinking about kindness because Angie challenged me, because I
was never thinking about kindness in this story.
I had all kinds of other thoughts.
God's kindness of revealing Himself to Rahab is what started
this entire story. God had a plan to devise good
for the nation of Israel for protecting the line of the
(17:21):
Messiah, and it started with Hiskindness to reveal Himself and
His greatness to a prostitute named Rahab.
See, she didn't have the Holy Spirit.
This was pre Holy Spirit. That's after Jesus is gone.
So she didn't have the Spirit ofGod living in her.
And we only get the Holy Spirit of God living in us when we put
our faith in Jesus. She'd never heard of Jesus.
(17:42):
She didn't have a local church. She was a prostitute living in a
Pagan city, and she was not partof God's people.
The chosen people of the Israelites, Old Testament, the
Israelites, you are my people, and through your line will come
the Messiah, Jesus comes. New Testament.
Every single person who puts their faith in Jesus Christ
becomes his people. And so at the time it was the
(18:05):
children of Israel are God's chosen people and those who
believe on their God. And so she had none of that.
She's just this prostitute living in this city.
But so good, so good. She'd never heard of any of
this. She was a complete outsider, yet
God chose her. God's kindness, he revealed
(18:29):
himself. Do you see that?
Rahab said the Lord your God is God.
He is the Lord of heaven and earth.
She didn't say he's a God. She said he is the God.
Somehow, without the teaching ofthe Hebrew law, without the
teaching of the Israelites and the priest without any of that,
she knew the God of the universewas the one true God, Yahweh was
(18:52):
Lord. She could not know that without
God's kindness first prompting that knowledge and revealing
himself to this prostitute in this Pagan city.
Wow. Wow.
He had a plan this whole time. He had a plan.
But let me get on because I would not be me without a
soapbox moment. So let me get on my soapbox and
just for a second, let me say wedon't know why she was a
(19:13):
prostitute. Maybe she couldn't feed her
kids. Maybe she'd never been taught a
marketable trade and all she hadwas herself to give in order to
feed her family. We don't know.
We really don't know, but it shehad been taught to do whatever
she could to survive. And it doesn't make the work OK,
(19:40):
but it should make us stop when we see somebody's label and not
be too quick to judge or count them out, right.
So God devised kindness towards rehab.
I'll get off my box. God devised kindness towards
rehab and in turn made a decision.
(20:01):
Ray had made a decision as a response to God's kindness to
her. Just like when we accept Jesus,
God in His kindness draws us. He tugs at our hearts, and then
we have a choice to make. We can receive His kindness, put
our faith in Him, and become part of His people.
Or we can say thanks, but I'm just going to stick with what I
know. We do have a choice there.
(20:23):
So Rahab took what the Lord in His kindness had revealed to
her, and by the power of the faith stirred up in her heart by
the Almighty God of Israel, she devised good.
And in turn, the God of the universe saw her faith and her
boldness, and He gave her kindness and favor as she and
her household were spared when the walls came tumbling down.
(20:47):
So if we go back to Proverbs 1422, kindness and truth are to
who? All those who devise good.
Any one of us who takes God at His word, puts our faith in him
and steps out in his strength todevise good, His kindness and
His favor, it's on us. It's running after us like that
(21:08):
song we sang earlier. So how did this all play out for
Rahab? So the first chapter of the New
Testament, which we spoke about briefly, and you're going to
probably hear a lot of references to that.
But today it begins by tracing the lineage of Jesus, Matthew,
chapter one. First thing we see is a long
line of names that we probably want to skip because we're like,
(21:28):
I can't even say half these names, but don't, but don't
because as we learn, there's a lot to learn.
And as we read, right, Nicki, ifyou've listened to the last
what's her story podcast interview, it was with Nicki
Anderson and she said the exact same thing in her stories.
Like you see all these names andyou're like, why, man?
As you start to read and you start to learn stories, things
(21:52):
jump out at you and you're like,and it gets so exciting and you
don't, if you don't have that kind of emotional visceral
reaction to things like that's OK.
That's kind of a Jenny thing. You can just be like, and you'll
still get the same spirit. OK, Just just so you know, you
don't have to be as crazy as I am.
So it begins with Abraham, this lineage line, and it continues
(22:14):
to list a lot of really hard to pronounce names until it gets to
Jesus the Messiah, the Savior ofthe world.
In the middle of that list we find these words, Neshan, the
father of Solomon. Solomon, the father of Boaz,
whose mother was Rahab, Boaz thefather of Obed, whose mother was
Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of King
(22:37):
David. Did you catch that?
Rahab the prostitute was the great great grandmother of King
David. We don't find out in the Old
Testament what happened to her. We just know that when the walls
came tumbling down, they went in, they got her and her family,
and they let them camp around the outside of the Israelites.
(22:58):
Well, bet somehow she must have eventually gotten into that camp
because she didn't just get intothat camp, but she got into some
kind of marriage where she became in the lineage of Christ,
the great great grandmother of King David.
One of those moments, right? How cool is that?
(23:18):
Her actions led to the salvationnot only of her family, not only
of the Jewish people at the time, but ultimately helped to
pave the way for the salvation of the entire world because she
devised good, acted on her faithin the Lord, and then his
kindness and his truth was poured down into her.
I can imagine after she and her family were saved at the battle
(23:42):
of Jericho. And she's saying to the Lord,
God, thank you. You are God, thank you.
You're saving me and my family and God's sitting there going,
baby girl, you don't even know the half of it right?
We we see in the moment, God sees it all.
And while she knew something, hegot it done a great, awesome
thing. It was the tip of the iceberg or
(24:04):
Rahab the prostitute. So the prostitute label never
fully left her here on earth. She was still known that way
quite frequently. When we get to the New
Testament, we read even in Hebrews Chapter 11, if you speak
church and ease, you know that Hebrews Chapter 11 is the faith
(24:25):
chapter. In that chapter, Rahab is
mentioned among the great pillars of our faith, and she's
solely mentioned because of how great her faith is.
But yet she is called the prostitute Rahab.
It's still there. Her label never changed, but its
significance did. I want you to get this.
(24:45):
It went from reflecting her story to showing God's glory.
Even if your label doesn't leaveyou, it can go from reflecting
your story to showing God's glory.
The same can be true for any of us today who will call Him Lord.
Now when we hear her name, instead of reflecting on her
mistakes, we marvel at God's love and His willingness to use
(25:08):
any and all of us to build His Kingdom and share His love.
We all carry a lot of labels, but what power they will have in
determining our outcome and our story depends on how much we let
those labels carry us. So oh labels, I hope this works.
So I have AI was able to come upwith a lot of bad labels and I'm
(25:31):
just going to be honest, I only had to look outside of myself
for a few of them. Whether it is a label that
others have put on us, whether it is a label that our past
choices have credited to us, or whether it is a label that Satan
keeps whispered in our ear just to keep us stagnant.
(25:52):
Maybe you've heard you're stupid.
Maybe you've heard you're too much.
You know what's really funny? I'm going to maybe you've heard
you're not enough. But you know, what's really
funny is Satan has told me both of these my whole life.
And it wasn't until a retreat I was at in 2019 and we were asked
(26:15):
to really just like listen to those lies and let God reveal
those to you that I realized I was hearing both of these.
And I'm like, that can't be right.
And that's a relevant Satan. You're so dumb, right?
Amanda, you were there. I was like Margie, like really?
He kept telling me you're too much.
I don't know where that comes from.
I'm never, and you're not enough.
(26:37):
Well, that obviously was a lie, because there were the major
contradictions. One of them's a lie, at least.
All right. You're used to goods.
Maybe based on some choices you've made.
Maybe you're lazy. Maybe you hear that you're a
disappointment. Maybe it's unclean.
Maybe it's a murderer. Some of you will understand if
(27:01):
this label is in your head. You know why.
Unwanted loser, unlovable bad mom, ugly addict, worthless slob
(27:29):
no matter how hard I try. Glossy.
I've heard that one a few times.Show off.
Going to let that one sit. Harsh.
(27:50):
My daughter encouraged me to putthe B word there because she
said that's the label that most women carry.
But I left that off. But you can put it there if
that's the one Satan's whispering to you.
Because I told when she said that, I was like, do you have
any idea how many women do carrythat word in their head?
The minute we decide to speak our minds?
And I'm not up here for talking about all that stuff, but a lot
of us carry that. They're too harsh, they're too
(28:11):
much or divorced. Maybe that's been part of your
story and now you just talk. You wear this big D everywhere
you go. But today, in his kindness, when
God steps into the picture and we put our faith in Jesus.
(28:37):
His righteousness covers all those labels, and now we know
what he calls us Holy God calls us wonderful.
You are loved. You are the righteousness of
Christ. You are blameless.
(28:59):
You are forgiven. You are chosen, You are
redeemed, you are strong not by your strength, but by the
strength and power of the Holy Spirit of the living God living
in you. If you call Him Lord, no matter
(29:23):
what label you came in here carrying, you can walk out today
knowing His banner over you is love today and His kindness.
God is devising great things foreach and everyone of you.
He has a plan for you. He wants to give you a new
label, whether you've accepted Him or whether you've never made
that decision today. He wants to break those old
(29:46):
labels off of you once and for all.
God alone has the right to define us.
He is the label maker. Funny, right?
That one's not in the Bible. I That's when you think of the
names of God. That doesn't usually come up.
He is the label maker. Let God be your label maker.
(30:08):
And when you hear those negativelabels, stop it immediately.
And who am I really? What does God say about me?
I may still carry a label, but now instead of reflecting my
story, may reflect His glory. He includes the excluded.
He restores the outcasts. He has used adulterers, murders,
(30:28):
cheaters, liars, prostitutes, and slaves.
And that's just in the Old Testament, actually just in like
the first five books, Ephesians 320 amplified now unto him, to
God be the glory. This same God knows our hearts,
and when we give our lives to him, He will use us to build a
(30:50):
legacy that will far outlast anything in this world.
Lord God, you are the label maker.
Lord, thank you that even if it's choices we've made that
have brought the labels on ourselves, you are so much
bigger than our messes and we are not powerful enough to mess
(31:10):
up your plan. You may have to take a detour
that's not exactly what you would have done in the best of
circumstances. But nothing surprises you.
And you already know the end from the beginning.
You know the messes we're going to make, the messes we have
made, And you have a plan to work and weave your will and
your power in our lives and not around us, but with us, in spite
(31:33):
of us. You're going to use us in the

Nope, can't use that one. You, Lord, you see us and you
say, oh, yeah, I can use that. Because when we give our mess to
you, you take it and you build something more beautiful than we
can ever imagine. May our mess be our message as
we lay at your feet these labelsand these hurts and these pains,

and pick up the labels that you lay on us.
Walk out in the knowledge that we are the righteousness of you
