Speaker 1 (00:01):
Good morning. It's a thirty four. It's mere on there.
The mean's lot here today. We've got the general manager,
Scott Riley, Good morning to you.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Good morning Andrew. Great to see the sun out.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Isn't it nice? Ie? It was a beautiful sunrise this
morning over that mountain there, Sedgewick, I think they call it, yes,
absolutely beautiful. Yeah, yeah, Okayle. We've got some listener questions.
The first one is is it possible to have a
water tank a user pay available somewhere in Queenstown for
caravans to fill their tanks.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
This is a great question and Council at its recent
workshop had some early discussions around an RV strategy. There
was also a motion passed at the most recent Council
October meeting with Councilor to investigate ground opportunities to support
the development of a regional RV strategy and as part

(00:49):
of that naturally comes water supply. So the question is
directly related to where Council's thinking is at this point
in time. RV's in their capacity into the state is
going to change significantly with the new spirits coming on board.
That process is not very far away, and councils actively

(01:09):
working in that space to actually make some strategic changes
and engage with stakeholders. There's a lot of small businesses
out there that would be very interested in talking to
to help us step those things up. The red grounds
around our regions, you know, for example down at Strawn
where the golf club is and they have their RB

(01:30):
camping area. All those sorts of opportunities are got to
be where we can caterford these new opportunities around the
capacity lift. We did some numbers at the recent council
workshop and it was between one hundred and thirty and
two hundred and eighty extra RVs will come off the
boat each day. Wow, in demoport.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
It's a lot of money, that's right, a lot.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Of money coming our way, a lot of opportunities and
all those budding entrepreneurs there. We're very interested to have
a conversation with you. But we'll be coming back to
community with some early discussions around that at RB Strategy.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Shortly right onto the other question from John Wakefield, Dick
Clark's jetty at Strawn, Scilla's buriers up and there's no
access it's been about twelve months or what's the plan
to rectify it?

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Okay, this is part of the asset renewal process that
we're going through. We're actually looking at all our building
and built assets at this point in time. Dick Clark's
jetty is actually on our accent Council Action items list.
We actually talked about that last Tuesday as well with counselors.
Circumstances are it'll be a combination around working with masts

(02:46):
to actually have that opportunity reopened, but it's definitely on
our radar and if John keeps an eye out, will
certainly be out talking to people in relation to how
we actually make that work.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Okay, to more council information. A curbside collection which is
happening next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yes that's correct, next Tuesday and Wednesday, but you've got
to register your items by five pm today. The biannual
cleanup is a very positive, proactive process to actually support
people in that spring clean phase getting ready for bush
fire season. Opportunity to tidy up. But I don't want

(03:29):
you to put your aluminium cans out because they need
to go down to the recycling station. That's it, because
you're better off having the money rather than council getting it.
Fair enough, but in terms of things that we can't
collect broken glass, asbestos, fuels or oils, tires, soil, concrete,
gas balls, paint tins, or items that are over three

(03:51):
meters long. So it's generally the other typical bulky waste
that is not in that category that we can collect
from the curbsie. But please don't forget Friday today. You've
got to be registered, right Okay.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
The West Coast Spirit Awards dominations are now open.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Yes, this is one area where we've got a few nominations,
but we actually need a whole lot more. And what
I'd say to everybody out there this morning that's listening,
there's a lot of unsung heroes in our community. The
person that just shows up and does that job perpetually
over a long period of time, or someone's new to

(04:29):
something who's providing enthusiasm. We're keen to have those nominations
by Monday, the twenty fourth in November, so a bit
over a week. But also in all those clubs that
are out there, whether it's the local darts club or
it's the fishing club or wherever around our region, what
we're keen to do is to have those people think about, oh,

(04:50):
what's the quiet achiever that's in our community group.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
It's things like people putting on the market plate, markets
and things like that. You know, it's the back ground
that people don't see.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
That's right. It's the person that's in the background that
carries that spirit of the West Coast and actually makes
it function. And that can be the smallest thing, you know,
it's not always the person that stands at the front
of the queue. The person who cleans up and washes
the dishes or puts the garbage out or sets up
for those events is often the person that you know

(05:23):
doesn't get enough recognition. And that's what we're after. We're
after those unsung heroes and Spirit Award.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
And of course of the recipients will be announced on
the twenty sixth of the January next year.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Fantastic casual employees.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Yes, casual employees. We've got a number of opportunities as
part of that process. We're looking for people to work
around transfer stations, parks and gardens, recreational area, the park
across the street here, Andrew, we can see that there'll
be some maintenance. We probably could do with a couple
of cows on the grave but it's been so wet

(06:00):
week or so. But the dynamic is we're looking for
people in that casual space to help us over that
peak period in summer.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Fair enough, Okay, what else are we going? Did you
look at here the fire risk abatement? Let's go to
that one now.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Yes. In terms of fire risk abatements broadly, around four
six hundred properties will be inspected this year. Out of that,
we've actioned over two hundred notices so far since the
patrols commenced. But we will be looking at properties in
all our communities.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
So what are you looking at their scott.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Essentially where a property is potentially overgrown or it's got
an excess of vegetation that potentially for example, if you
get a bush fire embers spot in front, in front
of the fire, we don't want it to land in
a residential yard where there's long grass and then have
a how do I say politely a fire on the
inside of the castle instead of on the outside.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Fair enough, like anything else in there.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah, in terms of those particular communities, it'll cover everywhere
from Talla to Strawn, to Zon to Rosebury and here
in Queenstown. Recently we saw the bushfire last season here
in Queenstown. So we'll be looking at all those properties
that are on the perimeter of our communities as well
as internally to see whether we can make a change

(07:24):
in the vegetation to actually reduce that fire risk.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
Okay, do you want to take a break and we'll
come back.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Yeah, I think we'll have a break.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Yep, we are back with General Manager Scott Riley. Scott,
the fire risk abatements, let's go back to that.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Yes, the fire risk abatements. If people receive a notice,
you'll have a period of time to action that and
council provides information in relation to how you can actually
deal with that. But the best way not to get
a notice is to get in first and actually attend
to the issues and then work through that and reduce
the risk, which is slashing removing the vegetation, pushing it

(08:12):
back to your property boundaries.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
I think it's fair enough for yourself and also your neighbors.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
That's right. It's being a good neighbor and working through
the process where if there's a number of vacant properties
or unused parts of yards, pushing that via risk back
makes a big difference.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
It makes a difference. Yeah, let's get the swimming pools.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Yes, swimming pools. Recent survey, we truly appreciate the people
that contributed to that. We had just over one hundred
responses in relation to the swimming pool house, which was great.
Council's currently working through that. At the moment, we're still
looking for lifeguards, still looking for those people who want

(08:52):
to have their first career step in the aquatics industry
or just want some casual workover over the Christmas summer period,
Royal Site Life Saving Tasimani will be offering several courses
that's on the twenty second and twenty third of November
that will support anybody that doesn't have the skills and
just wants to step into that process. We don't necessarily

(09:15):
throw people in the deep end to use the one
we support them with developing their skills to actually allow
them to take up that opportunity. Whilst we have some
people that are coming back to us who have previously
worked for it, we're also interested in people who want
to take that step. So if you're finishing high school

(09:35):
this year and you think you want to be in
town for a little while and have some casual work
certainly come and have a talk.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
To us, especially that high school gap.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
That's right, that's exactly.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
Right, right, So what do they do?

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Just go to council, Yes, go to council. More information
will be available directly through council. Make a phone call
to us or jump on our website.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
Sounds great, Okay, Free and safe disposal of the household chemicals.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
Yes, rolling around again. The Cradle Coase Waste Management Group,
in conjunction with Dolphinson Waste Management are offering West Coast
residents the opportunity to dispose of household chemicals. So that's
the little bottle that you got on the shelf and
you don't actually know what to deal with, or it
could be a slightly bigger volume. Essentially, that opportunity is

(10:21):
to collect unwanted chemicals, cleaning products, paints, etc. You know
we talked about paints are not able to be collected
in the disposal hard waste cleanup. This is the opportunity
where you can dispose of those items. So in your
garnerridge head, laundry, all those places where you've got a
bit of leftover materials and you want to clean them out.

(10:42):
It is springtime. Residents must register for the items to
be collected by five pm Friday today the fourteenth to November.
So make a phone call to us at council number
is six y four to two four seven to three
double four and register have those materials collected so you

(11:03):
can do your tidy up. Register for that in the
one same phone call.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
And here we got a beautiful Christmas uphead.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
That's exactly nice.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
Anything else we need to talk about, Scott.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
Well, it was one thing I wanted to point out
Andrew for people who haven't seen the park, look how
much the tree ferns have grown since they were planted.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
They noticed that when they came back. The little frongs
are just starting to take themselves.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
They've grown an excessive ameter in the short period of time.
And dare I say the wet weather's probably supported that,
But I was just noticed that morning.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
Sitting here makes it look fresh, that's right. So this
other area that still needs to be finished, what's happening there?

Speaker 2 (11:41):
Yeah, we've got to put some ash felt down and
as you realize you ashvelt has got to go down
when there's the right temperature, and particularly the line marking
on that. So that's scheduled for the next few weeks
if we get a break in the weather. But essentially
we're almost on the cusp are being completely opened. There's
been a few conversations around a few things that we've

(12:02):
got to touch up, you know, a couple of the
gaps in terms around the installation for the small children.
We're onto that. That's been raised with counsel, so we'll
be action in that.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
I'll tell you what, it gets utilized, very very much.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
It gets a tremendous amount of use.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Yes, I mean you got the campers. They come and
the other the toilets sit under there when it's raining,
have their breaking or their morning tea.

Speaker 2 (12:26):
And there was a few residents concerned in relation to
the height of the mound where you take off on
the flying Fox. You know, for me who's a little
bit shorter, that was a circumstance. So that's been a
tend to too. They've updated the mound there so all
the kids can jump on and go for a ride there.
I say, probably want to see a couple of politicians
with their photos again, why not when we launched the

(12:50):
park probably a bit later in summer.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
No worries, okay, then all you Shane, Okay, Scott, thank
you for the time this morning. Are you in next week?

Speaker 2 (13:03):
I think the mayor will be back next.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
Week, and the Mayor's back next week.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
And then in a fortnight's time we'll come and.
