Speaker 1 (00:02):
Good morning, walcome to Mayor on air with Shaney been
the Mayor and general Manager Scott Riley. Good morning gentlemen.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Yeah, good morning Andrew.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
How are you for a Friday wet one? Not too bad?
Speaker 3 (00:12):
Very good.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Okay, let's get into it. We've got no list of
questions that have Edinburgh a council meeting which you had
on Tuesday. How did that go?
Speaker 4 (00:19):
Yeah, So that was held on Tuesday night, as you
mentioned there, Andrew, and it's good to see. We had
members of the public in the tenants and asked a
couple of questions each, which is great. So we had
a couple of questions about the Strong Waterfront. The petition
has been handed to council about the concrete wall. Under legislation,
the General Manager has twenty one days to respond to
(00:40):
the petition and so the petition is scheduled to be
included in the December council meeting agenda. There was also
a question about the traffic management plan for the Strong
Waterfront project. There is a plan and the General Manager
has followed up with that resident about this and we'll
be working through that in the near future as well.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
We also had a question from the Queenstown Amateur Swimming
Club raised concerns about the pool opening hours and impacted
on their programs, which we mentioned about last at the
last mayor on here. So we understand the delays in
confirming the opening hours has been frustrating and we need
to do better to make sure that user groups are
(01:21):
informed of this type of matter before, you know, before
it gets out there in the wider public.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
So we'll learn from that one.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
And of course those pools will start opening as of Monday.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
They certainly will, Andrew and I'll speak to that just
shortly right.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Also in the meeting, are the outcomes.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
Yes, we had some other outcomes, which is the feedback
summary from the recent pool openings. Our surveys was tabled
at the meeting. We had one hundred and two responses,
which we really think like to thank the community for that,
for their participation in the Survey's great to see.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
That, you know, one hundred and two responses is a
great number and coming on board.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Yeah, and we've certainly got a lot of feedback there
with regard to the opening hours of the pool. So
councilors carried a motion resolving to write to the Premier
and the appropriate Minister in support of the Neighborhood Houses
Tasmania with their request for increased and adequate funding to
provide for the surgeon demand for their services here on
(02:26):
the West Coast.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
They do a fantastic job across the West Coast certainly.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
Yes, we also carried a motion to endorse the Lift
the Tone campaign which is around. You know, we have
see a lot of negative social media with regard to
council and counsel employees.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
So this is.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
A statewide matter of fact. It's been been rolled out
by nationally right across all local governments right across Australia now.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
But the gat's about to start.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
Their media campaign in January, so we thought well, yes
we should also be part of that as well, which
we are part of the legati of course, and it's
great to see that. Hopefully that will make a difference
because you know, our staff and counselors are part of
the community and they shouldn't have to put up with
some of the social media that they are.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Put in front of.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
To me, they should be banned.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
Yeah, well we'll see how that goes, but we'll see
what comes of it. There is there has been taught
by the state government about putting some laws in place,
but we'll see whether this is the first step.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
So hopefully this will.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
You know, it's not only the public eue that it's
also counselors themselves that you know, the way they treat
other counselors and how they interact with other counselors. It
needs and the community. So we need to lift that tone.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
It's all about workplace safety.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
It is mate, yes, yes, And also, following a question
from counselor Mackay, the general manager will be reaching out
to Westpac to commence discussions around possible regional service in.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
On the west This sounds good.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
At the Legat conference, we met with the Westpac guys
and they were pretty cool to see where they can
do something for the West Coast.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
That sounds great.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
It was great to have the conversation with the Westpac guys,
and we know there's multiple projects coming in our region.
They were quite interested in the opportunities that would create
for them, but more importantly the opportunities that are created
for our communities on the West Coast.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Yeah, so they've had a bit of change in their
strategy to reinvest in regional areas. West Pac so it's
great to see they've already opening up a branch in Smifton,
so we see that this is an opportunity as well.
And also on the back of that, we're also waiting
to meet with Bank of Us so we've had another
a reply from the Bank of Us CEO as of
(04:45):
yesterday and will be organizing a meeting in the near
future with them and see whether we can approach them
to come into the community as well. So another opportunity there.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
Great opportunities, aren't there.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
So there was also a quittory bought for financial Inkine
assistance from the Rosebury Development Association and the Rosebury Neighborhood
House for the Haunted House event on the thirty first
of October, and it's great to see that this event
was attended by many and the positive move to fund.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Funds raised from this event put towards other.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
Future community activities, so it's great to see that the
community is using them funds for other events.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
It gets people to come in there, spend a bit
of money, then they can do it the following year.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
Yes, that's right, mate, And we also approved one thousand
dollars event sponsorship under the Financial and Inkine Assistance policy
for the seven excess Queenstown Lines Ladies Funday event to
be held at the Recreation Ground on the fourteenth of
December twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Yes, you going good to your fairy floors.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
Oh yes, good opportunity there for the children of the
West Coast, not just Queenstown. It's open for the whole
West Coast, so it would be great to see as
many children there as possible.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Okay, to Scott's swimming pools.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
The season's about to start with a splash. If the
weather will give us a break in terms of career opportunities,
and we haven't had a lot of people take up
the temporary lifeguard opportunities. We have enough members to start
with some limited hours. I'll just let em work these
three for you, Andrew. The zee And Pool from the
(06:22):
first to the seventh of December will be open on
Tuesdays and Thursdays three till seven pm, and then Saturday
the sixth and Sunday to seventh twelve to six pm.
And in Queenstown from the first to the seventh to
December will be open Monday the first, Tuesday to second
(06:42):
from three till seven pm. Wednesday two to seven pm
that's Wednesday, the third Thursday, the fourth of December closed
for the public swimming because open for the swim club.
They learn to swim program is going to be running,
and then you've got Friday, the fifth of decen two
to seven pm, Saturday and Sunday sixth and seventh one
(07:04):
till five. People can purchase their season tickets from the
Council office or a council agency in the region. The
zone Post Office has zen season tickets available over there.
Otherwise the pool entry will be by cash or f
poss whoever. There's a limitation in zin for the first
(07:24):
couple of weeks because just sorting a few things in
relation to the f poss machine there. Council has been
working quite hard in relation to getting suitable trained people.
Several promising applications have been just received. There's a little
bit of onboarding to be completed there as well as
tiding up just a few of those last qualifications, and
(07:47):
I understand that training is going to be running in
the next week. We're also keen to hear from anybody
who's interested in working for the Pills. There's still plenty
of opportunities available there. We are looking for people that
can take this as a stepping stone for a future
career opportunity. Council also thanks the community for the understanding
(08:09):
of patients while we navigate the early part of the
season and get our sort of legs under the table.
Ensuring safe, well supervised swimming environments is the core priority
for us. Opening hours will be updated on our Facebook page,
pool and website, so encourage everybody to keep an eye
(08:29):
out for that. My suggestion is take a picture of
that with your phone, keep it on your phone, make
sure you engage as the season rolls forward.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Fantastic. That's it for being now. Strawn a gym equipment.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
Yeah, so we understand the frustration at the delay in
getting the gym equipment installed the Straw Gym and Muori
Purpose Center. This should be completed by the first December.
It's unfortunately, it is disappointing Andrew that has taken this long.
But we have had some hold ups with the equipment.
(09:03):
There's some in Hobart and we've told the staff to
get that equipment down here and whatever equipment's not so
they're still waiting for in Hobart.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Well, we'll get that bought up later on. So yeah, we.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
Have most of the equipment in the building as we speak, right,
so the launch will occur on the first of December.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
Okay, then we'll take a break and we'll be back. Yes,
we are back with there on here. It's eight forty
six Shane Pitt and Scott Riley. Scott's you correct usage
of dump points.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Yes, we're having a few challenges across our dumb points
around the region. We've noticed incorrect use of the dumb points.
Dumb points are located around the region and they provide
a reliable and convenient use for Caribbean cassettes and RB
travelers and the like are out camping and responsibly collect
and manage their waste. It's important that the dump points
(10:06):
are used correctly. What we're finding is that we're finding nappies,
food scraps, wipes, paper towels, rubbish and other chemicals going
through the dump point, which is actually causing significant challenges
for US our partnership with TAZ Water in relation to
how those services are provided. If wipes and other paper,
(10:28):
towel and stuff that doesn't break down like ordinary toilet
paper ends up in the system, it costs thousands to
fix pump stations and the like which everybody pays back
through their TAS water charges. So the dynamic for us
is to actually get to a point where these facilities
are being used correctly. They're provided free of service because
(10:50):
it's an open invitation to actually manage your waste and
look after the environment. The locations of the dump points
and the appropriate processes are actually located on our website.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Yeah, and I know these cassettes that you do use
chemicals to break down the toilet paper that doesn't include
baby wipes, nappies and anything else. You think they might
go down there because that's what's causing the problem.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
That's right, That's right, Andrew. And I guess the other
thing is, you know a lot of these are tourists
coming in our community as well, so you know, hopefully
they're listening to seven Excess as well like our residents do.
But if not, we have got signs at the locations
as well, and we'll make sure that there is some
other location.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
We can probably put some signs up at.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
The RV camping area as well, just to remind RV's
about use of the.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Camp and what can't right. We'll stay with you, Shane
Heritage Grants.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
Yeah, so heritage property owners are encouraged to apply for
the next round of Built Heritage Grant scheme, which is
run by the state. Application from round three of the
scheme closed on the nineteenth of December, not.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Long now, but yeah.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
The small grants program of up to twenty thousand dollars
to undertake small heritage conservation and restoration projects. And then
there's also the large grants program targeted towards heritage property owners, skills,
development organizations and the community to active activate heritage places
and engage community support for built heritage. Unfortunately, the local
(12:29):
government is eligible to apply for these grants, but we
encourage anyone who owns or occupies a heritage listed building
to consider applying. Some more information is available from Heritage
Tas website.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
And let's keep our history.
Speaker 4 (12:45):
Yes, no, that's right, Andrew with a few buildings here
in QUEENSTOWND that could certainly do with that, and hopefully
the owners of them buildings or even the leasees of
them buildings might put in for the grands.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Forward, there's some positive solutions there, Andrews that a little
bit amount of support can go a long way, working
with property owners to actually give a place of facelift,
put a code of pain on preserve some of the
parts of our very valuable heritage.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
That's right to you. Scott daleill got an employee needed
in Straw.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Yes, we're chasing a municipal employee in Strain. Municimployee will
basically work across all our sets road storm order transfer stations,
parks and gardens, recreation areas. It's a critical role in
terms of presenting one of our duels in the region
Strawn with all our visitors coming over the tourist season.
(13:36):
More information is available on our website and you can
email careers at West Coast dot TAS, dot gov, dot
AU and applications closed next Friday, Friday the fifth of December.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
Okay. Also a finance manager.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
Yes, we're looking for a new finance manager a similar situation.
This person will be engaged in the numbers part of
our organization. Information on that position is also available on
the website.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
Okay, anything else we need to talk about.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
I don't think so, Andrew.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
I think it's all done and dust.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
It's pretty dole out there at the moment, and.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
You can see why the park in front of us
here at the station. You know, people saying why it
isn't being completed, Well, you can't do that in the rain.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
No, especially the work that needs to be completed on
the on the park. It's we're going to wait for
a few days of fine weather in a row. And
at this stage we haven't seen that this year. So
you know, we're hoping that spring might have brought some
fine weather.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
But what is spring?
Speaker 2 (14:34):
Yes, we haven't seen I don't think I.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
Did make the suggestion Andrew spring was that a half
day about a fortnight ago?
Speaker 1 (14:40):
That's right, that's right.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
We're looking for some fine weather and you know, reiterating
the pool season's opening, so yep, you'll be able to
get a bit wet above ground and below ground at
this point in time.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
Might make you grow a bit. Anyway, guys, I'll see
you next Friday, Shane, Yes, mate, and in a fortnight's
time i'll see you Scott. That's great, of course, that's
mere on a here of course, it happens to each
and every Friday, just after the eight thirty years right
here on seven Excess. If you've got any questions for
the me you know what to do, just head on
over to Sevenexcess dot com dot au, look for shows,
look for mere on here and give us all the
(15:12):
details because if you don't give us details, then we
don't know what's going on. You'll also find out what's
going on at the council and in your community. And
if you haven't heard the full interview, you can do
it again go to Sevenexcess dot com dot au. Of
course today is Mayor on air. It's all thanks for
the West Coast Council working in partnership with our community.
