Speaker 1 (00:01):
Good morning to your Shane.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Good morning Andrew.
Speaker 1 (00:04):
How are you not too bad? Now we can say
you're in Hobart, yes.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Mate, yes, I'm then here at the leg At conference.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
So fair enough then. Okay, no listener questions for today
or this week. But we've got a council meeting next
week we.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Have, mate, Yes, Tuesday, the twenty fifth of November, five pm.
And of course the meeting is open to the public
and we encourage as many people as possible to come along.
And I guess you see what what other things the
council will get up to during the meeting. So and
of course questions can be submitted to the General Manager
(00:41):
up to midday on the Tuesday. So yeah, it'd be
good to see a few people belong to the meeting.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Okay, let's have a look at the West Coast Spirit Awards.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Yeah, so just a reminder that nominations closed on Monday,
the twenty fourth of November, so next Monday coming up, mate,
And you know, it's a great opportunity to celebrate the people,
organizations and events that have made an outstanding contribution to
the West Coast community. And you know, we look forward
to the seen in nominations and they'll be all based
(01:17):
in the meeting for December where councilors will make a
decision on who the recipients will be for the West
Coast Pirit Awards, and then they will be announced on
the twenty sixth of January twenty twenty sixth.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
So yes, okay, casual employees still looking forward, Yes, mate.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
We're still looking for municipal employees responsible for maintaining and
preserving council affts such as our roads, storm water transfer station,
parks and gardens and also the recreation areas. So the
casual municipal employee will work as part of the council
(01:55):
team to perform all those manual tasks and we'll need
to follow appropriate safety procedures working outside experiencing the full
range of the West Coast weather. So yeah, there is
one of them positions mate, that you know when when
the West Coast weather's about and out them guys and
(02:18):
girls are certainly out there in some attritioned weather as well.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
But especially when I look at the park here and
they're picking up the rubbish she's tumbling down with rain.
They still do these job.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
They do, mate, Yes, it is and it's important part
of what they do for our community as well. So yeah,
it's yeah, so good to see some more people put
their hand up for them casual positions.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
That's right now, are you still looking for life guards
at the swimming pools?
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Yes, made us reaching critical stages now for recruiting of
lifeguards to work at both Zoo and quench Down swimming
pools this summer. At the moment, we don't have enough
applicants to be comfort in operating both pools for seven
days a week. So you know, we're pleased if there's
anyone out there that would be interested in a in
(03:08):
a job over the summer period as a lifeguard, get
in contact with counsel as soon as possible so we
can get your name and on the on the register.
And also you know, we do offer the training for
life guards, so we want to make sure that if
there any is anyone out there that wants to partake
in becoming a lifeguard, that we'll get them in that
(03:30):
training that's coming up.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
So Shane, if we don't have enough lifeguards, what will happen.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Well, we won't be able to open the pools for
the full week like we want to. And you know,
if it gets that critical. We haven't got enough lifeguards
for both pools. Yeah, it may mean that we'd have
to close individual pools for certain days of the week.
So you know, we've we've still got a bit of time.
(03:56):
But it'd be great, great if people could put their
hands up and those that you know that may be
coming back from university or even those are coming back
from college spending the summer break here on the West
Coast a good opportunity for them to earn a bit
of money. And also you know, out in the outdoors
and they're at the swimming pools, a great opportunity there.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Andrew, Okay, shame, we're going to take a break and
we'll be back. Well you are back, we may are
on it, Shane, good morning again.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yeah, good morning Andrew.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Now let's take a look at the heritage grants.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Yes, mate, So any heritage property owners are encouraged to
apply to the next round of the Built Heritage Grant Scheme.
So applications for round three of the scheme clothes on
the nine of December twenty twenty five. So there's a
couple of options there. We've got the small grants program
up to twenty thousand dollars. That's to undertake small heritage
(04:58):
conservation and restaurantation projects. And then there's also a large
grant program targeted towards heritage property owners, skilled development organizations
and the community to activate heritage spaces and engaged community
sports for built heritage. So unfortunately though local government isn't
(05:19):
eligible to apply, but we encourage anyone who owns or
occupies the Heritage list of building to consider applying. Yeah. So,
and of course more information is available from the Heritage
Tasmanian website on that.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Okay, So let's unlock the West Coast.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Yeah, so this is exciting, Andrew. It's a few months
ago we launched the app that allow people to access
to Queenstown's squash and Fitness center via their smartphone. So
that trial went well, so we're now moving that across
the West Coast. So the Unlocked West Coast app allows
legal to unlocked doors using their smartphone with twenty four
(05:59):
access to the gyms, all the public toilets and the
public showers down there and straw and so you know,
if on the app, if people can purchase there and
renew their gym memberships also, which is great. So you
don't if you call into the office here to renew them.
You can do it via the app, which makes things
a little bit easier for people. So we're also working
(06:22):
on a feature so people can book and hire some
spaces as well, especially in the new new Straw Gym
and multi purpose center, and also there's in multipurpose centers also,
so you know, it's it's a great opportunity Andrew, and
I think it's you know a few other councils around
Tasmania have seen what we're what we're doing, and I
(06:44):
think it's a great, great achievement.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
With the public toilets. Can anybody get that app and
use it? Say someone visits us, say two days and
they need public toilet, can they download the app?
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Yes? Mate, they can certainly can yeah, and of course
just also remember that you don't need the app to
access to the public toilets during the normal day, right,
normal open opening hours, so yeah, it's only for those
after hours so that you know people have got access
to the tallest twenty four to seven. So yeah, and
(07:21):
as you mentioned, anyone can download the app and have
got the opportunity there to use the app to open
the public toilets, and also the showers down and straw
and there the slipway showers, but there is a small
fee to use them showers, but that also can be
paid for using the app.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
So yeah, no, it's great, it sounds pretty good. I'll
tell you what. Vandalization will be gone now because usually
vandals use at the nighttime and I've seen that. But
with this, you can open the app, the doors with
the app and you go to the toilet nice and easy, yes, mate.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Yeah, and as you mentioned, it does allow us that
a little bit of I guess we know who's been
in the toilet and not that you know. It's only
just so that if vandalism does occur, as you mentioned,
we can capture that straight away. And then also there
is an issue with a toilet that people can move
(08:17):
a message and you know that counsel employers can get
there quicker to rectify the issues as well. So yeah,
and that's a great opportunity.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Okay, let's get onto something that concerns especially with the
little ones. Colored sand recall.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Yes, mate, So the A Triple C has issued an
urgent recall of several types of children's colored sand products
which contain containing naturally occurring asbestos only small amounts, but
you know we're reaching out. Any West Coast residents needing
to dispose of the colored sand product should follow the
(08:56):
following steps. So place the scene in the clips field bag,
complete the landfill deposit form and drop it the form
into the council office in Queenstown or email the completed
form to opposite West Coast Dot TAZ dot after AU
and then the council team later a waste will contact
the person listed on the form to organize the time
(09:18):
for the bag seem to be taken to the landfill.
And of course there's no fee for that disposal as well.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
It's not very good at this time of the year,
especially coming up to Christmas.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
No, mate, it's not. It's one of the things. I
guess it'd be great if they could pick these things
up before they got them out in the community, but
unfortunately this one slipped through the gaps.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
And yeah, believe reading in the media that it came
from China with the sandpit with the bits of asbestos
in it, So no one's sort of tested it.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
No mate, no, And I think you know there is
different regulations across different countries as well. Regarding asbestos and
the percentage whether you know, if it's less than ten percent,
I think it's as classed as zero or something like that.
So you know, there is a lot of a lot
of speculation around around this, and I guess it does
(10:15):
highlight that, you know, even the the our the federal
federal area don't get things right all the time as well.
So it's yeah, it's it's unfortunate, but I guess the
words out there now and hopefully we can you know,
we can get that off the out of the playgrounds
and out of the schools before any issues that occur.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Yeah, now we can't say goodbye to you yet because
the late Ruby Fishing competition and kicked off this morning
from seven am. Are your family's part of it?
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Yes, mate, Yes, And I'll be heading back today. I'm
heading back down there, so yeah, looking forward to hopefully
a good weekend. And of course we've got Target leaving
the West coast today as well, so heading heading south.
I mean, hopefully it doesn't cause too many issues for
those travelers on our roads.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
So you're on your way back soon, because I see
what the Lyle Highway will be closed from about one
twenty five this afternoon.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Yeah, we'll finish about lunchtime. I think we'll probably get
caught halfway between them, but we'll there we go.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
