Speaker 1 (00:03):
Good morning. It's hey thirty five. We do a mayor
on here with Shane Pit the Mayor, and of course
that the general manager, Scott Riley. Gentlemen, good morning, good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Good morning, Andrew. How are you this morning?
Speaker 1 (00:12):
A beautiful day? Not so much but the unconformity I
love it.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Yes, mate, she's certainly live out there at the moment,
is she is?
Speaker 1 (00:21):
That's he. I've never seen so many people walk around.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
It's great to see the people out and about, even
those coming down from a view before the events start.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Okay, we've got no listener questions. Let's get into it now.
Council meeting coming up.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
Yeah, so the October council meeting being held on five
pm Tuesday, twenty eighth of October. Of course the meeting
will be open to the public, but we encourage people
to come along so they can see a bit of
what goes on with counsel and how it works, and
questions can be submitted to the General Manager up to
midday on Tuesday the twenty eighth. Yes, it's good to
(00:57):
see some of the community questions into at our last meeting, Andrew,
we've taken I've taken a couple of them are notice
which we'll feed back in the next few weeks. But
we're just working on the information that's required for that, right, Yeah,
but no, it's hopefully we'll get a feel long on
the Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Twenty eighth.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Go to the West Coast Winners.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Yes, and I guess you know that's also going to
happen on that at that meeting.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
So we'll be drawing the Lucky winners.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
And we've certainly had a lot of people pay the
rate for in full, and we've had a lot of
people suggest some suggestion from people with regard to the
West Coast Winners, which we'll look at for next year.
And yeah, you know, but it's really been a great
uptake and I think it's probably surprised a lot of
(01:52):
the council about the number of people that have taken
it up. So that'll be as I said, we'll be
drawing at the council meeting and people can come along
and yeah, this four.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
Vouchers up for must be pulled out.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
I won't be mine name.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Definitely won't be mine around, right Scott.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Let's get the lifeguard positions, baking and the causes that.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Be Yes, certainly pool season we're well into spring at
this point in time, and I'd shower around about the place.
But pool season is upon us and we're certainly looking
for a couple of lifeguard positions senior lifeguard at the
zee And Pool and some seasonal lifeguards at z And and Queenstown. Right.
The dynamics around that is that there's a training opportunity.
(02:39):
Royal Life Saving Society will be running some training. So
if you're interested, put your hat in the ring and
the training opportunities will line that up as part of
the process.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
So if someone's interested, what do they do.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Essentially they go to our website and lodge their expression
of interest or contact council office.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Right, you've also got another position they can hear as well.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Yes, we're looking for another municipal employee at the Queenstown depot.
Those applications close on the nine tenth of October, and
I'd put a call out to all those younger persons
in our community, those that are sort of starting out
in their careers. If you're currently unemployed, tray your hat
in the ring, contact us or go to the website
(03:25):
that will be training support for that position. So we're
keen to get as big a recruitment pool as we can.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Fair enough now expecials of interest for the far abatement contractors.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Yes, five season is just around the corner. We're currently
out in market for expressions of interest for mowing, slashing,
brush cutting and all the things to do with vegetation management.
Much come through at this point in time. I've had some,
but applications for that process closed on Friday, the seventh
(03:56):
of November at five pm. We're really interested in all
those contractors. We're given our experiences and my first introduction
to the region last year with a bushfire, we've taken
some proactive steps. Inspections are currently being undertaken as part
of that process. That probably leads us into the next topic,
(04:17):
which is the fire risks. Inspections are being undertaken. Artistes
are going out. I noticed a few going to the
post office over the last few days, so we're expecting.
We're inspecting all proper properties, including council owned land, private
property and government owned land.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
So what if people can't do that.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
If they can't do that, well, that's where we need
the contractors to engage with us. We facilitate a conversation
and relationship between the need and the supplier to actually
get the outcome. Recent rainfall is certainly going to put
us in a positive space for spring. We're encouraging property
owners to be proactive, go to the the market before
(05:00):
everybody's getting there's done, so that you can get things
done scheduled up. It's a great first step for people
to actually participate in the Tasmanian Fire Service Bushfire Already
challenge is one way we're encouraging people to get a
better understanding in terms of how they can manage the
risks for their properties.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
You just don't know that's exactly right. Okay, then we'll
just take a break. Yes, we're back with Meyor on Ears,
Shane Pitt and the general manager Scott Riley to you, Shane.
(05:40):
The Unconformable Festival.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
Yes, mate, it's kicked off and what a first day
Yesterday Thursday, it certainly you know, the amount of people
in the town.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Was just unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
It's probably the first Thursday for an unconformity festival that's
been as many people in the town.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
So it's great to see.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
And you know, this festival brings art and live music
and community celebrations into the heart of Queenstown for the
Au Street has been transformed into the Crib Road and
it's something which you know, in the past the locals wanted.
We did try it down in Little Awe Street one
year and it wasn't the same as what you know
(06:22):
having in the main street. So it's great. And you know,
we've got the stage set up now for Spider Bait
on Saturday night. Oh no, not really, but I guess
you know, a big act like that to come to Queenstown.
You know, we had the Wolf Brothers here in the
past and now we've got Spider Bait. But along with
that though, we've also got a lot of you know,
(06:42):
a lot of talent that will be playing around Spider bat.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
We have been playing a lot of talent here on
the radio station in the last couple of days. And
I'll tell you what, there's some great talent out there,
local talent. I'm talking about.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
There is, mate, there isn't you know.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
There's an act that will be supporting Spider Bait and
she's from Queenstown. So it's great to see these people
coming back to our community and providing some of that
you know, that coverage and of the music. So you know,
it's great, great for the weekend, and it's great for
the West Coast.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
Someone said to me the other day the unconformity, well
not couldn't go ahead if we had rain, If it
was just sunshine, it would be a different thing. And
I think I know what they meant, because the West
Coast it's wet. You've got the showers.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Yes, I think we've only had one year since I've
been involved that we've had fine weather for the whole weekend,
which you know, the events, the rain doesn't.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Bother to stop people, it doesn't.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Stop the West Coast.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
That's the benefit of all those little micro events that
are indoors, that are tucked around the community. There's incredible
opportunities and it's a festival for everybody.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
That's it.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
And I guess you know.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
The other thing is the West Coast Visitor Information Centers
moved up into the Memorial Hall, so people have got
the opportunity there to stop in and purchase some of
the West Coasting merchandise as well. And it'll be you know,
it's going to be a great weekend. It's gonna be
a great weekend, Andrew.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
And of course you've got a visitor coming today we.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
Have mate, Yes, we've got the governor coming, so we're
able to grab the Governor to come along for the
Unconformity so it's great. And she'll be around the town
and looking at some of the art trail, et cetera,
and some of the activities going on.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
So she's here for.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
A full date well today and card off tomorrow. So yeah, no,
I can't wait for her to arrive. And we'll certainly
show her the best of Queens down that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
I tee. We've got quite a few politicians coming this weekend.
We've got Anne Urkhard, We've got Tony Burke at the
federal member France. Gosh, it's all happening.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
Ruthe Forrest will be here, no doubt, just about it
every Unconformity festival, and no doubt there'll be some others.
I'm not sure the Craig Farrells coming up, but he's
normally here as well, so they'll be.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Yeah, Okay, it sounds great, Okay, the next iconic will project.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
Wow, yes, this is this would be great for the
West coast.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Andrew.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
It's you know, it's it's been a long time coming
and we'll develop a new multi day hut based bushwalk
in the Tindal Ranges and it will build on the
success of the overland track and also the Three Capes track,
but you know.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
It is a tough track the over land I've done it.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
Yeah, well this one will be just as spectacular, if
not more, you know, up in them Tindal Ranges, up
in the Alpines are and especially during winter when we
get a bit of snow on them peaks, it'll be
looking at the hearts there the next level, which also
they are putting in some tent platforms as.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
Well, so that it was in construction at the moment.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
It hasn't started as yet, but it's not far off.
So it's just gone out for more public consultation. And
we did see some I guess some not so positive
remarks from the Greens with regard to the next iconic walk.
But you know they've already suggesting that there's going to
be seventy five people on that track a day, which
(10:08):
you know, that's seventy five people, one hundred and fifty
people in the community in and out so every every day.
So that's going to be great for the West Coast.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
It's going to put us on the map.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
It will mate, Yes, it certainly will.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
And now that's why we push so hard with the
state government when they asked for proposals or expressions of
interest for the next next walk in Tasmania.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
And this is only the start.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
We'd like to see that go right through to the
Cradle Mountain, which the original plan was, but given the.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Cost to do this much long walk.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
Yeah, so that'll be you know, that'll be up to
a ten day walk.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
So plus we've got Diverse Sky Run which is coming
next maye.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
That's right mate.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
Yeah, so we hope you know, the Parks and Wildlife
have released their draft environmental impact statement for the next
Iconic Walk, which we're hoping the public will have their
say and that's opened to all the seventh of November.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
So when do you think this will kick off?
Speaker 4 (11:04):
Well, we're talking what are we twenty five, twenty six,
twenty seven, I think, with a completion around twenty twenty nine,
so it's still a little way off. But you know,
there's a lot of work needs to be done to
make sure that that track is more safe and it
doesn't impact the environment up there as well, so that's
(11:26):
one good thing about it.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Sounds like a bit of lightning and thunder. Sounds like
you looked at me strange, we looked at all each
other strange. Anyway, you still hear it? Okay, let's move
on to the West Coast Spirit Awards.
Speaker 4 (11:41):
Yes, the nominations now open for the West Coast Spirit
Awards that celebrate the people, organizations or events that have
made an outstanding contribution to the West Coast community. The
reward reflects ways that people, groups and events enhancing contribute
to our community life here in the West Coast. So
(12:01):
you can nominate by picking up a nomination form from
the Council office or emailing Growth and Change at West
Coast dot TAZ, dot CAV dot au and asked for
a nomination form to be emailed out to you. And
also you can complete the online form.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
On the website.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
So it's we'll be sitting down at the December meeting
and looking at them nomination to make a suggestion who
we believe should be the recipients this year.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
So you know, it's not just the one, it's.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Open for multiple So when do we get to know?
Speaker 4 (12:38):
We sorry, it isn't it the December meeting that we
make the announcement.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Yes, yeah, that's right, probably in January. I think that's
when I saw.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
That's when the announcement we made in January at the
normally we do at the Strong Mount Laws Strong Picnic,
which is on Australia Day.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
So we'll watch this space. I guess that's right.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
Anything else in counts, So we need to talk.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
About just one thing for me, I'd just like to
thank the Strong community. We had the opening of the
Way and the Strong Gym and Multi Purpose Center on Tuesday,
and it was great to see the community out in force,
especially the young children dressed up in their junior sport
gear and having a way out of time down there
(13:23):
in the new building. I think it was great, and
you know, it's great to see that we're able to
finally get that building up and open.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
It's taken a little while. It's been on the drawing
board for some time now.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
So I was going to say Andrew, it was a
great shout out to community that participated in those openings.
The community spirit around that was fabulous. The dynamic around
CWA coming and doing the catering for us and embracing
the new facility was great to see.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
It makes small little towns like that for fantastic.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Yes, it does.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Yeah, yeah, the opportunity of that building. Now, you know,
I've had a number of conversations with people about we
have a great indoor facility. You know, we got the
jack jumpers, We've got the boomers coming to the state.
You know, I've been saying to staff, you know, we
need to start to think about how we activate an
asset like that and work with junior sports in Strawn
(14:17):
and all around the West Coast to actually provide those
opportunities and exposure for our youth.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
But it's good that the community are talking to council. Yes, yeah,
and they're interacting with each other instead of fighting against
one another. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
And I think that's a great segue there Andrew into
what Scott mentioned about, you know, the c WA being
involved in the junior sports and also Kelsey Jarvis that
is demonstrating on the gym equipment down there. So you know,
everyone on the day was fantastic and it's great to
see that the community came together for that event.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
It's great. Should have a pat on the back anyway, gentlemen,
that is mere on there. I'll let you guys go.
I won't see you next Shane. I'll be taking two
days off Thursday on Friday. It's been planned, but I've
talked to you on the thirty first of October, which
is Halloween Day. Who knows what's going to be in
the studio hio Jim and thank you very much. That
(15:16):
is Mayor on there. It happens every Friday, is just
after the eight thirty am news. And of course you've
got any questions for the mayor with it be in
your street or town, get in touch with us and
we'll ask it for you. Head on over to seven
excess dot com dot Au give us all the details.
You'll find out what's happening at your council and in
your community. Plus if you'd like to hear the full
interview back again, you can do sevenexcess dot com dot Au.
(15:36):
That's Mayor on air. All thanks to the West Coast
Council working in partnership with our community
