Speaker 1 (00:04):
Happy Halloween, gentlemen.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Good morning Andrews.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
Scott Shane Mere on air this morning. Okay, let's get
to it. No lists the questions. We're at council meeting
that held on Tuesday. How did that go?
Speaker 3 (00:17):
Yeah, so we done. The West Coast winners raffle was announced.
Congratulations to the following. So Tiari Murphy and Madison Brady
from straw won the two thousand dollars oucher. Sehort Thurgood
from Queenstown won the thousand dollars oucher. Graham and Marie
Paige from Rosebury run the five hundred dollars oucher, and
(00:38):
Barry Hooper from Rosebury run the second five hundred dollars voucher.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
So congratulations, congratulations. Yeah, and it was a great, great outcome.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
There was eleven hundred and thirty eight entries in the
Wow the West Coast winners, so you know, people did
take up the challenge and it's great to see it.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
All paid off.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
It did. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
We also received some questions from the public regarding the
Queen's Down Squash and Fitness Center, which I put a
motion on, had a motion on the table Andrew, which
council carried. We've asked for a report with updates about
the gym equipment, repairs to the roof of the squash courts,
the status of the bald Ring Wall project, and any
(01:19):
long term plans for the gym or potential relocation. So
we'll wait for that report, which we hope to have
back for the December meeting. We also carried a motion
from councilor Homer regarding open drains, Council resolving to investigate
fencing off open drains and to step up funding to
ensure all West Coast towns are free from open and
(01:41):
exposed trains and having adopted.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Structure plan for the future work.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
So we've been working on this for some time now,
and I guess it's now time that we move forward
on some of them drains. We did it order some
years ago now on all the open drains, and Queenstown
was probably the worst town on the West Coast for
open train.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
So I suppose you've got quite a few drains that
coming into a town like this, it takes a while
to couple them over.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
It takes a little while to cover the infrastructure. Andrew,
and you know, there's been some improvement works done in
Zen and we really look forward to the motion from
Councilor Hamer in relation to considering that in a strategic way.
So yeah, we'll be taking some positive steps.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Fair enough.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
And we also carried a motion from Counselor Mackay to
investigate how expected increases in RVs into the state given
the new spirits when they're come on on the water
and our region, and how that will impact council infrastructure.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
You know it's going to.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Impact all Tasmanian infrastructure when it comes to RVV. So
we will take a motion to le GAT around so
that's the Local Government Association of Tasmania and see if
they can make it a broader issue rather than just
the West Coast, which we believe it will be a
broader issue and maybe a consolidated effort from all councils
(03:06):
right around Tasmania could make at least find out what
it's going to cost local governments.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Fair enough, fair enough, And.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Also we.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Councils provide us a report noted regarding the fire risk
abatement process and given an update on the program, providing
detailed steps involved in the fire risk abatement workflows, maps,
updated process clearing and shows an error responsibility and Avenue
for discussion with all stakeholders. I've also had the meeting
(03:40):
with the premiere with regards to this, and he's on
board to for us to push parks and wildlife. We've
been talking to them for some time and they don't
seem to respond, but he's made it clear that they
will respond and assist with what we're doing here on
the West Coast right now.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Next Monday is a public holiday. We've got office coll issues.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Yeah, So with the public holiday and Monday, the council
office in Queenstown we'll be closed from five pm today
and reopening eight point thirty am on Tuesday, the fourth
of no member. So if you need to report any
council related emergencies still call six four seveny one four
seven hundred and that'll be directed to the after our number.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Fair enough.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
If there's any other issues around State growth roads, well,
of course call State Growth on thirteen hundred one three
nine double three.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
So that's any roads outside of our towns State roads. Yeah,
so that's state roads.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
And any water or sewerage issues of course, it's tas
water one three six and double ninety two and yeah,
so there will be no change to the waste collection
services and the waste transfer stations operate over the public
holidays period as well, So and if there's any dog
related issues, please follow up with the Tas Police.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
An assist you.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Scott. Second rates installment we're reminder already.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
Yes the years rolling on Christmas is not far away.
Second Rates installment is due today. No direct correlation to
Halloween and normal payment methods. You can do that by
BPA or through Australia Post or visiting one of our
agencies in Zee and Strawn or Rosebury or the council
(05:25):
offices in Queenstown.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
Fair enough, we go back to Shane. The West Coast
Spirit Awards are now open.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Yes, the nominations now open Andrew, and you know, this
is a great award that celebrates people, organizations and events
that have made an outstanding contribution to the West Coast community.
So we'd like you know, for those people out there
that would like to nominate, doesn't have to be an individual.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
It's a group, as I said, a group.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Or even the event that has made a significant contribution
to our community. So it's you know, it's great to
see in the past years we've had numerous nominations. It's
been hard to filter through them and come up with
the winner. The winner, although we don't just pick one winner. Now,
if there is more than one person that's we believe
(06:11):
that is needs that accolade, well we'll look at.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
More than the one we share amongst you.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Two.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
Nominations closed Monday, the twenty fourth of November there, and.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
It's important for community to actually identify those people. Everybody
knows a person that's that unsugning hero, that's that quiet
volunteer that's committed to delivering great outcomes for community. We're great.
We would truly appreciate people nominating those people. A lot
of those people you know are very humble themselves. But
(06:43):
if you know a person that's in that category that's
committed to something, nominate them and nominate them absolutely.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Yeah, Okay, still with you, Scott. We're looking for a
compliance administration officer.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
Yes, Council's got a position vacant for a compliance administration
officer working in delivering customer service for all matters related
to approvals, planning, parking, animal control, environmental health matters. So
a very critical role in terms of the health and
well being and community. That administration office will need to
(07:16):
have the ability to communicate with people, be able to
talk to customers across a broad range of stuff. But
at the same time, Andrew, we're interested in people that
I think they can do part of it. We are
offering training as part of this role and moving the
skills forward and individuals and the organization and the applications
(07:38):
close at five pm on Monday, the third of November,
so you can spend the public holiday doing that. If
you want, drop it into the email and get it
to us. All the details are on our website.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Okay, we're going to take a break. It's West Coast
seven Excess. It's eight forty three. You're on West Coast
seven Excess is eight forty six. We are talking there
(08:12):
on there, Okay, Scott will go to you. Lifeguard positions
and vacanc and courses that are happening.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
Yes, we have a number of lifeguard positions available at
our swimming pools for the upcoming pool season. This is
a great opportunity, Andrew, for anybody that wants to contemplate
some part time work moving into summer. These positions actually
give you the opportunity to get into the aquatics industry.
(08:38):
And I'd like to think sometimes you know, we'd have
a young person here that starts in this world and
then ends up the next Lori Lawrence.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
Of the world.
Speaker 4 (08:47):
Those sorts of circumstances where these small opportunities can grow
into great careers. And we're encouraging people to apply for
the positions of lifeguard, senior lifeguard and seasonal lifeguard, and
we haven't got many expressions of interest at the moment,
so we're keen to get as many. On the back
of that, we're scheduled some were quatic industry training, so
(09:09):
you can come to these roles completely just have an
interest in swimming pools yep. And then the lifeguard training
which is being scheduled for Saturday the twenty second and
Sunday the twenty third of November over a weekend, so
that people can fit that in amongst their schedules at
the Queenstown Swimming Pool. Those early enrollments are important and
(09:30):
that's why we're out for that lifeguard position of expressions
of interest and rolling through that process.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
I guess the other thing, Andrew, that people may have
seen or it's out there now, is there's a survey
out around the opening.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
House for the pool. That's right.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
We hope that as many people as possible would fill
that survey in And yeah, just so we've got an
idea what times that people would light the pools open.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Right, this is the first time you've done it.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
This is first time we've had the survey. A.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
Yes, it's just so we can try and work out
with our lifeguards et cetera as well their timing and their.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Work especially some could be working part time or casactly.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 4 (10:11):
And the survey is about actually getting the fit right
for the pool hours actually into the local communities. There's
essentially two swimming pools one in Queenstown one and Zen
and how they operate. We want them to match the
community needs. Right, We've got industry, we've got different people
in the community. So how do we make that work
(10:32):
so that we get the maximum value out of that
service that we provide the community.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Right.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
That feedback is to be submitted by nine am on Monday,
the tenth of November. That is correct, right, Well, so
they were scott expressions of interest with the fire abatement contractors.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
Yes, we have spoke earlier in relation to the fire
abatement process. We're rolling through and working with landowners well,
the other other part of that is that we're inspecting
at this point in time and looking at the pies
that need some work, and we need the contractors in
our region and anybody that's interested to actually nominate themselves
to be on that list so that we can get
(11:08):
through the volume of work fair enough and those contractors
will be lined up for the twenty five to twenty
sixth season, so from now through to early mid April,
where we'll be doing undertaking the work and that's a
combination of mowing, brush cutting, a little bit of weed
removal occasionally, you know, all those dynamics that go with
(11:29):
keeping properties and the vegetation. Load down for more information
and the application forms are available on Council's website or
bio contacting the council office and expressions of interest must
be received by Friday, the seventh of November, so there's
about seven days to go and we're keen for people
(11:49):
to connect with us there. Based on what I've seen
so far, there will be a volume of work and
we're keen for the contractors and anybody that's interested to
step up and help us out enough.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Now, do you Shane? The upcoming events next weekend.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Yes, it's getting closer.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
Andrew the West Coast Heritage and Mineral Fairs on next weekend,
the eighth and ninth of November and zoo there there's
a great event, not only just for the gym enthusiasts
and history bus but for anyone who wants to have
a good time, family, family friendly weekend.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
While I'm going there on Saturday, see the shopping.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
It's a great event and it's good to see that
it's you know, it's ongoing and it's yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
So as you mentioned, the.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
Wood shopping is probably the highlight of that event for
a lot of people, but yeah, there was certainly some
other exciting events going on over there, especially for the
children as well. So it's a great family event. And
then we've got the Lake Burbery Fishing Competition from the
twenty first to the twenty third of November.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
Entries are now open and if you.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Want to entry and you haven't seen one around the
local businesses, there's a lot of entry forms out there.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Get to seven Excess. We've got the entry forms here.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Yeah, we've got them mate, Yes, And check out the
Queenstin English Club website and Facebook page for more details
on that okay.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
So the next one is the free by the curbside collection.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
Yeah, so it's time for our buy and your collection
curb side collection. We do this twice a year and
we offer a free site free curb side collection for
larger items, so those that people can't get to the
transfer stations or sometimes it may be too big for
the transfer.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Station as well.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
There's a great way to help those that need to
get rid of these large items. So please register for
the items for collection by five pm Friday the fourteenth
of November. The collection will be held on Tuesday the
eighteenth and Wednesday the nineteenth of November.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
And time to make some room ahead of the Christmas
and New Year. Why not in your probing? Yeah it is.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
You've got two weeks off, I'll start doing it.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
And there is a few things that we can't collect.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
Those broken glasses, best as fuels and oils, tie soil, concrete,
gas bottles, paint tins and items over three meters long.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
It cannot be collected fair much. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
Now those items that you did say that you can't collect,
where do people go with those?
Speaker 4 (14:17):
They can take those to the transfer station.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Right.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
All the opportunities around the West coast or over to
the landfill in there fair enough?
Speaker 1 (14:26):
Anything else we need to talk about in council guys.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
No, we've noticed a few people in the park across
the road. Andrew. It's great to see people out and about.
And the weather we've had in the last few days,
that's completely out of the box. So really enjoying that.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Twenty four degrees on Sunday. I can't believe it, but
then again, every day is different here in Tazzy on
the West coast. Well, I am taking two weeks holidays.
I'll be back on the fourteenth of November and I
will see you shown my right, I'll see you both.
You'll be both both on the phone again, both yes, okay, Well,
