My special guest on this episode of The Music Mind Podcast is a professional trumpet player of more than 40 years experience based in Sydney Australia.
Ralph Pyl has been a leading commercial trumpet player working in a wide range of performance and recording situations including extended periods in the television bands on some of the highest profile shows on Australian national TV.
In this conversation Ralph discusses highly valuable topics including dealing with the pressures of live TV performance, battling the challenges of the instrument when it doesn't come naturally to you, his approach to reading music, formal qualifications vs the real life scenario of how performance gig spots are usually filled, earning a living in the changing work place that is impacting musicians worldwide, leading a big band and dealing with health issues that can radically impact on one's ability to earn an income from music performance.
Ralph also discusses his role as a music contractor to major artists such as Australian Jazz Maestro James Morrison, and also being an importer of the famous Bob Reeves Brass range of custom instrument mouthpieces.
Finally viewers get to see and hear Ralph perform a beautiful duet on muted trumpet with Brian Hayes on baritone saxophone playing an unaccompanied version of the jazz standard 'My Funny Valentine'.
