Speaker 1 (00:02):
Middle West Spirits
was founded in 2008, focusing on
elevating the distinct flavorsof the Ohio River Valley.
Their spirits honor their rootsand reflect their originality
as makers, their integrity asproducers and their passion for
crafting spirits from grain toglass.
Their Michelon Reserve linereflects their story from the
(00:23):
start to the bottle, to yourglass, With unique weeded and
rye bourbons and also rye andwheat whiskeys.
The Michelon brand is easy tosip.
It might be a grain-to-glassexperience, but I like to think
of it as uncut and unfilteredfrom their family to yours.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Thank you.
Yeah, we're the Scotch andBurnin' Boys Raising some hell
and making some noise.
Yeah, we're the Scotch andBurnin' Boys.
We're here to have fun and wehope you enjoy.
(01:35):
We're here to have fun, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
All right, welcome
back to another podcast of the
Scotchychy bourbon boys.
This is an exciting uh evening.
It's a six o'clock podcast foreverybody out there.
I'm glad that everyone who'sjoining us uh, uh, very excited
for this podcast tonight.
Uh, welcome everybody onfacebook and youtube.
(02:20):
And then also we have tonight.
We got amzy winning.
Hey, amzy, yes, glad to be on.
Have tonight.
We got Amzie winning.
Hey, amzie.
Jeff, glad to be on here thisevening.
We got Diane Strong Good to seeyou, diane, hey, hey.
And we got Renee True so goodto see you, renee.
Good to see you, jeff.
And what's really kind of coolis this is the fourth one that
(02:41):
we've done, leading up after thefirst one, which you guys
invited us to come down.
And then I'm so excited becausethis is the third one that
we're going to be a part of, sovery, very excited about doing
become in everyone.
For us has been an evolution towhat we could and what we
(03:02):
wanted to do.
But you know, you guys, it'salso been an evolution as you
keep going forward with thefestival.
I'm really excited with thewebsite.
This year really coverseverything that you normally do
and it was really kind of cool.
So maybe talk about a littlebit just to start us out with
what we can expect this year.
(03:24):
Little bit just to start us outwith what.
What's what we can expect this?
Speaker 3 (03:28):
year.
Whoever wants to start themaster well, once again we're.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
We're kicking
everything off on thursday with,
uh.
We've got the bourbon bell tourwith uh, heather wibbles, she's
doing another mixology on theriver, so that's very, very cool
event.
I think we've got two ticketsleft of that, um.
And then whiskey thiefdistillery is doing our kickoff
party again this year.
(03:54):
Um, I'm sure it's going to bebigger and better than ever.
Um, they, it's always a greatevent.
They've always got live music.
And course they've got the openbar and the sampling and the
fire pits.
And I don't know if you've everbeen out to Whiskey Thief, but
it's always a party happeningover there.
It's a good time.
(04:14):
And then, of course, fridaywe've got, you know, stevens is
back, she's going to do abourbon pairing at 1 o'clock.
Stevens is back, she's going todo a bourbon pairing at one
o'clock.
And then we've got the FridayVIP, which we're actually
featuring the women of bourbonthis year, and we've got a
really great lineup of women.
(04:35):
So you want to hear the listthat we have so far.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
You know Stevens and
Heather wibbles are coming for
that.
And then melissa rith with uhold forester sarah um aldrum.
She used to be with it'sbourbon night but she has
evolved into uh working at uhdark arts whiskey.
So she's regardless a prettyimpressive woman of bourbon, so
(05:01):
we're happy to have her.
Creola dickerson um, she iswith um.
You guys help me out here withuh, a completely new riff okay
and we're thrilled to have newriff.
This is, uh, the first yearthey're going to be joining us.
Uh, gg to dan.
She is with Angels Envy, alexNewcastle or Alex Castle.
(05:28):
She's with Augusta, and let'ssee here Ashley Barnes.
She's with the Spirits Group.
She's joining us.
So we're pretty excited.
Eight pretty impressive women.
We've also asked them to bringtheir brand, and then we've got
a couple extra distilleries thatare going to be there as well,
including with Seat Thief RD1,and our title sponsor Limestone
(05:55):
Branch, limestone HeritageDistilling Company.
They've all agreed to pour somespecial samples this year, not
something you can just get offthe shelf.
That was a request in one ofthe surveys and we took it to
heart, and so it's not going tobe just your average pour, so I
(06:16):
think the VIP is going to bereally special this year.
We've also got some stuff linedup in the auction.
Rene, you want to talk aboutthat?
Speaker 3 (06:23):
lined up in the
auction.
Rene, you want to talk aboutthat?
Yeah, so we're going to haveLimestone Heritage Distillery is
going to donate a barrel be ahigh-end barrel for the auction.
And then Whiskey Thief has puttogether a design-your-own-mash
(06:45):
own mash bill barrel pick Ithink it's not a whole barrel,
but I think it's 42 or 48bottles, something like that.
But you get to design your ownmash bill within some parameters
.
I mean you can't just come upwith anything, obviously.
I mean you know they can't goto Hawaii and pick out some kind
(07:07):
of rye that's grown there andthat kind of thing.
But they're putting togetherthe wording on that.
But that's pretty cool.
I mean it's something that theFrankfurt Bourbon Society has
been able to do through theyears out at Whiskey Thief.
Now they're going to allowsomebody else to do that.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
that's the lucky high
bidder at the auction so you'll
design your own mash bill, they'll distill it and then age
it for you, or are you pickingmash bills that are already
ready to go?
Speaker 5 (07:38):
no, it's going to be
aged okay, so so you'll, you'll
design your own mash bill withinparameters, um that they will
age it.
Uh, like I said, some of thedetails will probably be spelled
out before the auction as faras how long they'll age it and
then they'll bottle it and then, yeah, you get uh, 48 bottles of
it okay, so then it'll be in abarrel 48 will go to you and
(08:00):
yeah, and then they do what theydo go to you and yeah, and then
they do what they do.
So a really neat kind of I think, very unique experience for
someone.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
Well, especially with
what's happened at whiskey
thief, now that you've got, youknow, derrick was over there
with with kelly, and now you'vegot lisa, roper wicker, and
you've got ben ben over there.
I mean you got a lot ofdistilling talent.
That's over with what you know.
It's kind of like I was liketalking with walter and I'm just
(08:31):
like you know you got a lot ofquarterbacks and running backs
there and you're like you'relike you got to be the vince
lombardi of making that work andyou know he does a good job of
that.
So but I was excited you knowwhat they got going there there
of that.
So but I was excited, you knowwhat they got going there.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
There's no doubt.
I think that experience soundsfantastic.
Yeah, we're excited about that.
And then you know, traditionally we have received a
lot of extremely hard to getbottles from Buffalo Trace.
We don't have confirmation onwhat those bottles are this year
, so we have not posted anythingon the website yet.
But if you watch the website,as we get bottles and or barrel
(09:14):
picks committed, we add those tothe website.
So I think we still havetickets available for that event
, correct, Diane?
oh yeah so, yeah, that's thepremier event and I think it's
important to reiterate whatDiane just said about the pours.
So the pours that you're goingto get on Friday night you're
(09:38):
not going to get those samepours on Saturday.
So it we're trying to reallylisten to what our customers
said, as dan uh mentioned, andmake it more exclusive so that
you know you get your bang foryour buck so, so, like last year
when I was there, so at thestations where everybody where
you walk around, that's wherethose distilleries will be.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
It'll be like having
their, their, uh, exclusive
pours at each station, right, okay, yeah.
And then I mean just thecoolest thing about the whole
auction last year was the peoplethat came up, like they're out
(10:21):
of Texas and out of Dayton andyou know the auction was going
off and it was really cool towatch, but they were like
sharing.
He opened the bottle rightthere and poured out some of the
Taylor.
I mean it's such a fantasticevent.
You know there's the peoplethat attend it are by far the
(10:44):
coolest.
I mean that was so cool to meetthem and how they shared the
bourbon that they were buying.
You're talking about someexclusive, exclusive bottles and
they were just like anybodyelse in the bourbon industry or
the bourbon community.
They were just down-home peoplethat were wanting to share
(11:06):
bourbon with other people.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
Now Jeff, that
gentleman, he's from Ohio, his
name's Christian Prince, thankyou.
And he told me before theauction.
He says I want you to letpeople know.
I think he got auction orbidder number one, as I recall.
He says anytime I buy something, let everybody know.
Whatever I buy, we're going toopen as soon as the auction's
(11:30):
over.
And I was like this isunbelievable.
This was great.
So I kept track or I added itup later.
I believe it was $7,800.
He spent $7,800 on whiskey andhe opened almost every one of
the bottles that he bought onwhiskey and he opened almost
every one of the bottles that hebought.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
So you know, the
other group was from Texas.
We ran into them at House ofCommons and that night I'm not
going to say anything but I sawa bourbon because they were
sharing Brent Elliott hadstopped by and they were just
sharing and pouring and theywere buying.
I was getting stuff and I waslike wait, what's happening?
And we were talking about 1959,old Fitzgerald, 19,.
(12:14):
We were drinking 1960, ancientAge.
And I mean I saw the bill and itwas more than I could ever even
imagine of what he picked up.
I mean he was taking thoseDustys and he was sharing with
the whole bar.
Like you know, like if you'rebuying the Jack Daniels or Jim
(12:35):
Beam or you know something forthe whole bar, that's one thing.
But when you're buying oldDustys for everybody, everybody
that really got into it and itwas just I was astounded at the
generosity of even the, the bigspenders right, you know that's,
those are the.
You know they, they werespending so much, they spent so
(12:56):
much money and that it was justsuch a I.
I mean I went back with Dave, Ijust we were.
I was in town a couple of weeksago and went back to House of
Commons and Dave, he just doessuch a good job there and he's
got such.
You know and then when you goout into the whole community
(13:16):
that you guys 100% are right tohave the festival and you
include the community because ofhow close knit the festival is
in frankfurt.
Speaker 5 (13:28):
I mean you really,
through this, through this
particular festival, showcasethat the greatness of that city,
of your city, you know, jeff, and I think part of that is and
I think some of these bigspenders get it too, hopefully
is that we are a charity-drivenfestival.
(13:49):
We do this every year to givemore and more back to the
community, and so when peopleare buying those bottles that
they then share, they're helpingthe city of Frankfurt, and so I
think that's a that's a bigthing.
Um, one of the things I loveabout our festival um, you know,
(14:11):
it's a great fun festival, butthen it's it's just a great
cause as well.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
We gave back eighty
thousand dollars last year,
local charities and, I hope, thousand dollars.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
I hope this year is
bigger because it just seems
like there's an excitement ofall the people.
I know and you know it's funny, honestly, you guys are sold out
of the general admission.
It's funny, honestly, you guysare sold out of the general
admission.
But if you come down thatweekend I guarantee you you're
going to, you can have some.
The city is just a buzz andeverybody from the festival,
(14:46):
after the festival is over, pours out into the city.
It's a fan.
And you know you've got all thedistillers out there different
people.
You know you've got all thedistillers out there different
people.
I mean, we were just with somany people last year and it
really the festival actuallyextends out to the city of
Frankfurt and it's, you know,it's beautiful.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
To that extent, diane
, why don't you tell about this
year's after party, which iskind, kind of?
We're going to make it moreopen and available than people
have thought in the past well,it's always been a free event
for everybody.
Speaker 4 (15:24):
I don't think that
people were aware.
They just kind of assumed itwas for the attendees.
But you know, at the end of theday, the attendees have been at
the event, some of them forfive hours, so not all of them
are wanting to go to an afterparty.
So we really want to make surethat the community is aware we
are stepping it up.
This year it's the GoodwoodAfter Party.
(15:44):
They're the primary sponsor, but Buffalo Trace is coming in
as the band sponsor and we'vealso had some help from Benson
Valley Bourbon with bringing inthe opening band and then we've
hired.
The opening band is Creekwater.
They're kind of local, regional.
They've got a decent following,great band.
But the headliner his name isNoah Thompson and he was the
(16:10):
2022 winner of American Idol.
He's from Kentucky and we'resuper excited of American Idol.
He's from Kentucky and we'resuper excited, so we'll start
sharing that information outthere and advertising that
pretty soon here.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
Yeah, I mean last
year, I honestly I think it was
one of there's always anothergreat bourbon experience, but at
the House of Commons I thinkthat was one of.
You know it, just those youhave, those ones that you just
keep you remember, and thepeople that you were able to
share bourbon with.
It was just off the chart and Ilook forward to it this year
(16:49):
because there's so many peoplethat I told about this that are
coming down to the festival andso there's going to be a lot
more people, local people I knowfrom Ohio.
There's going to be a lot ofpeople I'm aware of in Kentucky.
Whiskey Thief is one of oursponsors of the podcast and
Walter's been nothing butspectacular.
(17:11):
I mean it's just you know, justonce again you meet somebody
like him.
I mean it's just you know, justonce again you meet somebody
like him and you know, you justfeel there's a friendship, a
bond, and once again it's.
You know, I always look atwhat's been happening in this
industry and why it's so awesome.
It's bourbon drives everythingbut the friendships in the
(17:31):
community that exists within thebourbon community and just
meeting people like you and youguys, um Amzie, I mean, you're,
you know, and meeting you, reneeand Diane, it just I feel like
that if I never was into bourbon, I would have never made your
acquaintance, uh, and never goneto the festival and meet and
(17:53):
met so many friends and thatthing.
And that's what I, you know, that's kind of what this is
about, and the history inFrankfurt is just amazing.
Now for everybody, let everybodyknow what was the effects of
the flood.
Obviously it was completelyunderwater to the break.
You know, you've got the leveethere.
(18:13):
Is the grounds pretty wellrecovered, or did you have to do
anything special?
Speaker 4 (18:20):
The festival site is
right along the river.
Obviously we love this park.
It actually flooded twice thisyear.
We had flooding in February aswell.
After the February flood, thepark actually was a little bit
more level and, um, we wereexcited about the effects that
that flood had on it.
However, this major flood youknow it was it was 0.02 from
(18:44):
being historic and um, or beingbeating the historic one um, the
park did suffer a little bit ofloss.
We've had some sloughing offnear the river.
We've been down there.
There's a lot of sand.
We might call it bourbon on thebeach this year because there's
(19:06):
so much sand.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
That would be awesome
.
Speaker 4 (19:09):
Yeah, but I mean it's
going to be fine.
I mean I honestly don't thinkthat by October you'll notice a
whole lot, but I think the cityis going to set up there to talk
about the situation andrecovery of the park.
They are reseeding it.
They reseeded it once and thenit rained and it washed away and
(19:30):
they're having a hard timekeeping up with that, but it
looks good.
I mean, I think it's.
I don't think anybody is goingto notice.
We may have to move a couple oftents around to avoid some soft
spots and things, but it'sactually our footprint is going
to be a little larger this year.
We're extending the festival,so, um, and we also have more
distilleries than ever, so weneed to extend it but yeah, um.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
So talking about
distilleries, uh, one of the
really cool things is I've gotfour sponsors and you're talking
middle west spirits, you'retalking whiskey thief, you're
talking about the spirit offrench lick and you're talking
about old louisville, and allfour of them will be at the
festival.
So, like I said, I'm so excitedabout about that, you know,
(20:17):
having to be down there and beable to see all the sponsors and
talk, talk with them and it's,you know, I really feel that how
you guys, you know, set it upand the what with all the, the
other other bourbon things mixedin, you've got the, the
podcasts and you and you've goteverything.
Now, you were mentioning thatSarah is working for Dark Arts.
(20:39):
You said that.
That's what you said, diane.
Speaker 4 (20:42):
Yeah, that's correct
you didn't see that press
release.
Speaker 1 (20:45):
I did not see that
press release.
That's exciting.
That's going to be reallyinteresting.
I love the team that Macaulay'sputting together.
There's no doubt about it andmakes sense.
It's just you know.
Now, are they still doing the,the podcast, chad and sarah?
Do they still do that, or isshe?
She stopped doing that?
Speaker 4 (21:06):
youtube channel.
So I believe that uh chad hascontinued with it and I'm not
sure if he found someone toreplace her.
Okay, not that she'sreplaceable.
Speaker 1 (21:16):
I mean they're still
married, right?
Speaker 4 (21:19):
I don't think they
ever were married.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
What.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
Seriously Okay.
I'm not sure.
I thought maybe there was apoint, but yeah, okay, but her
going there, that's good.
I mean that's awesome.
I know Macaulay and I've beentrying to work.
Now that makes total sense,macaulay.
I asked him if he was going tobe around this next Friday,
after this this Friday, and hewas like well, I'm out of the
(21:46):
country right now, but Sarah'sthere and I didn't know what
Sarah he was referring to.
But now I do, so maybe stop inand say hi, Right, Absolutely.
Speaker 4 (22:04):
So you know it's
Urban Night is usually at the
event as well, and they arestill going to be at the event.
So Chad will be there and we'llprobably learn all about what
he's got planned going forwardwithout Sarah.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
So, yeah, there you
go.
He could tell us.
So there you go.
If all you podcast, there's apodcast, it's perfect night.
Just you can find outeverything you need to find out,
right?
Well, he's probably fillingeverybody in anyways, but, diane
, I saw that you personally, theflood affected your, your house
(22:31):
, correct?
I mean, I think?
Speaker 4 (22:33):
that it did.
I had five and a half feet inmy main floor.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
You had a couple
bottles that you posted that
made it.
They didn't look too hot, butthey made it at least right.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
I do have the one.
Well, I saved it.
This is my 20-year happy.
Normally I would be sipping onthe mayday from whiskey thief
right now, because that's myfavorite and that did not
survive.
So my bourbon collection is, Idon't know, it's questionable,
(23:04):
I'm sure it's still fine.
Yeah, there you go.
No, I'm slightly what.
I'm not sure if they changedlabel every year, but yeah I
think they changed bottles.
Speaker 5 (23:15):
It was a flat, uh,
traditional pint shape and
they've gone to the roundbottles.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
Yeah, they've got
them all traditional right, they
that you know.
So, yeah, definitely, um, but Iwould.
This one was crazy at 146 proof.
I mean, mean, I tried it.
I'm waiting.
Me and Walter are supposed tobe doing a podcast together soon
(23:41):
and I'm going to taste that onthere.
I did pick up this one justrecently, which is 134.7, and it
was just.
You know, whiskey Thief is agreat place to go.
I mean, I'm not the hugest fanof Rise, but I have to say that
I'm a huge fan of Whiskey ThiefRye, because I haven't had a bad
(24:03):
one, you know.
So, anyways, all right.
So, like, once again, so didyou have you completely?
Did everything work out?
I mean, how long did it did ittake to go through the stuff and
get back up into the livingspace?
Speaker 4 (24:21):
Well, I still have
studs in my first floor.
They're getting ready toinsulate starting Wednesday or
Thursday, so it's been a slowprocess, but we were fortunate
in that our bedrooms areupstairs and we have hot water
and a makeshift kitchen in ourgarage.
And we're making memories, makeand do right that our bedrooms
are upstairs and we have hotwater and a makeshift kitchen in
our garage, and we're makingmemories making do right.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
That's all you can do
and just we're comfortable and
it's good.
I mean that that you knowanytime you have a flood like
that and you get that much water, you know first.
It's just.
Speaker 4 (24:49):
I'm just glad you
were safe right we are when you
compare our flood to what justhappened in Texas.
We're very fortunate.
Speaker 1 (24:59):
Yes, there's no doubt
, we all are here in Frankfort
and as a community.
Speaker 4 (25:02):
I mean, we people
talk about how great our
community is all the time, butwhen, when it came to that flood
, I tell you what that thecommunity was phenomenal.
I mean they were there beforeRed Cross or FEMA especially.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
And so they were just
Frankfort's a great place.
Yeah Well, I mean, you know, weall know it's a treasure and
you know just the people withinit, the Bourbon Society, you
know the Frankfort, it's just,it's amazing when it comes to
the kindness and, like you said, you know this festival, you
guys keep sharing more and moreback to your community and, uh,
(25:40):
so amzy.
So there's an after party, butis there going to be the after
after party?
Speaker 5 (25:45):
well, I, I don't know
, um, and for those that don't
know what you're talking about, normally we have a little event
at the uh Bourbon Society afterfor anybody that wants to stop
by.
I think we'll probably dosomething there.
But the issue we've had is thatthe bridge that connects
downtown Frankfurt to what'scalled South Frankfurt, where
(26:07):
Frankfurt Bourbon Society is,has been closed and is still
closed.
The new bridge will apparentlystart construction in 2027.
So it makes it a little harderto get over to the Frankfurt
Urban Society.
But yeah, I would imagine therewill be some people over there
for a little while.
Speaker 1 (26:24):
Yeah, you kind of
have to come in from the other
way, right?
Speaker 5 (26:27):
Yeah, yeah, it makes
it.
You know it used to be what ablock and a half walk from house
of commons, for example, yeah,and now it's, uh, I don't know a
mile or something.
Yeah, you're, you're drivingyeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Well, I mean, I
stayed at the fairfield inn.
It's probably that was 2.7, soit wasn't that bad.
I mean it's it's okay.
It's still close.
We're still staying across fromthe, the chocolate factory,
which then is on the other side, but now is that bridge?
Is that bridge closed, or isthat?
Speaker 5 (26:57):
no, that one that's
open.
Speaker 4 (26:58):
Okay, that's the one
that's open, okay, yeah speaking
of places to stay, you know wegot two new hotels this year, um
, compared to last year, and, uh, the delegate, which is, I
believe, they've got 42 rooms,and then there's the Ashbrook.
Both of those are very muchwithin walking distance to the
festival.
(27:19):
So I should mention that we'regoing to be doing an undressing
video with them just to kind ofshowcase their, their property.
But they have availability andthey're both really catered
towards the bourbon community.
So the Ashbroro is in ahistoric home, you know, and
it's previously owned by ehtaylor.
(27:41):
You know that it's.
They're really cool properties.
If you're in for that, ifyou're really into that kind of
experience, um, stay, that's theway to go that's.
Speaker 3 (27:50):
They both have nice,
uh high-end restaurants and of
course course very nice bourbonbars.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
What are the
restaurants?
Speaker 3 (27:59):
Cypress and Oaks and
the Ashbrook.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
Yeah, it's called the
Ashbrook at the Ashbrook.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (28:07):
Yeah, and Capital
Plaza still has rooms available
as well.
They set aside a giant block ofrooms for us.
I think there's only about 20left, for if you come in on the
first or second, but juststaying the third and fourth,
they've got 59 rooms available.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
Okay, and everybody
who's watching right now that's
thinking of coming down or hastickets and doesn't have their
rooms.
You need to do this Because, bythe time it happens, there's
not a lot left.
Speaker 4 (28:38):
I do love that we're
able to have so many people stay
downtown and walk and not worryabout driving, and it's just.
It makes it a lot easier oneverybody and plus, you know the
downtown is where everything is, that's, that's where you want
to be.
Speaker 1 (28:52):
Oh, absolutely no, no
, no, it's just, and I mean it's
just fantastic.
One of the cool things is youguys are the capital of Kentucky
, if anybody doesn't know.
So when you're downtown you'rebasically the capital.
It's kind of like the center.
You're always around thecapital and it's really kind of
a cool thing.
It is a wonderful town, townand there's so much to do.
(29:19):
Uh, at first, when you come, youmight not think that, but after
you've been there a coupletimes, you realize what kind of
a community is and how manydifferent places.
And you guys keep like you justtalked about two new hotels
with bourbon experiences, bourbon bars, restaurants, uh,
food's always fantastic.
Uh, you guys, you know, overallthis, this festival is really
(29:41):
really to me.
Uh, you know about yourcommunity and it showcases it
and even down to you know whenyou're walking around the
festival, the festival'sfantastic, uh, but then you know
when you're talking about thatspilling out into the community,
you guys have always pushedthat and you were completely
right to do it, and I think thisyear it showed One.
(30:02):
We're out of COVID, I thinkcompletely.
So you don't have to worryabout people not coming.
But I mean, when you thinkabout the excitement and how
fast you did sell out this year.
I mean, normally at this timewe're talking about there's some
tickets left, and it's been awhile since there's been tickets
left and we uh diane, didn't.
Speaker 3 (30:17):
We add uh, because we
expanded our real estate
footprint on river a little bit.
We uh, we always want to havean intimate setting there, so we
limit ticket sales, but weadded 200 tickets, right we
increased it by 300.
Speaker 4 (30:31):
Um, yeah, but uh, a
larger portion of that went into
the Twilight ticket, thatallotment of that last two hours
.
There's enough space to addmore because you know you have a
lot of your people who showedup at one o'clock who are ready
to leave by then.
It opens up some more room andthere are twilight tickets left.
(30:55):
I mean, and honestly, ifsomeone were to come to
frankfurt just for those twohours with all of the other
stuff that we've got going on,it is still so worth the trip,
no matter where you're comingfrom so I agree with that
completely.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
So if you guys,
knowing that there's twilight,
uh, anybody who's listening tothis and wants to come down,
like I said, the festival, twohours at at the festival would
be more than enough, and thenpeople at the festival that you
meet are going to go out intothe community and it is pretty
exciting, there's no doubt aboutit.
Now, what was it?
(31:30):
There was one other.
You were talking about thetickets.
I had a question that now it'sgone you know.
Speaker 5 (31:38):
A couple things I
would like to add for people
visiting.
Maybe if you haven't been tofrankfurt before, um, you know,
if I have friends show up, wheredo I take them?
Uh, because you kind ofmentioned it being a capital so
you can go up around the capital.
There's still scaffolding onthe capital, some renovation
being done there, um and theinside is gorgeous it is, and
(32:00):
then go up to the frankfurtcemetery, visit daniel boone's
grave.
from his grave you have awonderful view, um on the
capital, which is below.
It's on the hill um, up abovethe capital, um.
But you know the other thingyou are 20 minutes or less from
Buffalo Trace, the new BensonValley Distillery, whiskey,
(32:20):
thief Castle and Key WoodfordReserve, four Roses Wild Turkey,
using Frankfurt as your homebase.
Probably another 35 minutesmaybe to the distillery district
in Lexington where you canvisit Dark Arts, james Pepper,
(32:44):
re1 down there, you know, andmaybe I don't know 50 minutes to
Louisville.
So Frankfurt's a really goodhome base.
If you want to come in, staythere, you know, go visit some
of the other places.
The other thing I think, evenif you come in town for Twilight
tickets, you're probably goingto enjoy the after party a
little bit more than people whoget to the festival earlier.
(33:07):
And also, I think Saturdaynight in town at House of
Commons and other places isn'tas crowded as it is Friday night
At House of Commons and otherplaces it isn't as crowded as it
is Friday night.
So I think you could come forthe Twilight last couple hours
there and still have atremendous experience.
Speaker 1 (33:26):
I will also say that
now I remembered my question.
So, at the festival, what's thebottle acquiring?
Acquiring, you know what isthat?
This year, as far as you knowdistilleries, what they can do
and how they can, you know, telleverybody how you can obtain
some pretty damn good whiskey.
Speaker 4 (33:45):
You talking about the
Festival Barrel Picks?
Well, there's that.
Speaker 3 (33:50):
But just in general,
the sellers are able to sell
their whiskey, but if they'reout of state and they don't have
a Kentucky license to sellDiane, we have a local liquor
store, capital Cellars.
That facilitates that.
So, yes, they often sell.
Speaker 1 (34:08):
It facilitates it
right there, right right there
at the festival, you have a.
They set up a store there.
So if you like something that,if you like french lake, you can
go over to the tent where thatand then, uh, purchase bottles.
That way and a lot of the I wasbardstown bourbon company.
They brought, uh, I believe itwas last year, the Carter bottle
(34:29):
.
So the distilleries have JamesE Pepper released the one year
their special bottle and so youcan pick up some really kind of
excellent whiskey that you mightnot be able to pick up unless
you go to the distillery or youwaited in line and were able to
get something like that For sure.
Speaker 4 (34:49):
We've got the.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
Oh, I was going to
say probably the same thing I'm
going to say I'm going to letAndy tell the story.
We've got 10 or 11 barrel picksthis year.
Those aren't going to be singlebarrels.
They're definitely somethingthat you're not going to be able
to get anywhere else.
I don't know if AMC wants todig into that a bit.
Speaker 5 (35:12):
Yeah, I can touch
base on that.
So we kind of in the past wehad just sold the barrel picks
at the tent and a lot of timesRenee and I would man that space
.
But now the distilleries aregoing to sell them at their
tents.
There will also be some signageso it'll be easier to see those
(35:35):
distilleries and I think theywill be emphasized on the map of
where all the distilleries arelocated.
I can kind of run through thelist.
We still have a few that wehaven't done yet.
But Angel's Envy, kind of runthrough the list.
Um, we still have a few that wehaven't done yet.
But, uh, angel's Envy.
Um, you know great, uh, youknow great port finished.
Uh, bourbon that we pickedthere.
(35:57):
Um, bespoken Spirits they are inLexington.
Uh, they originally started inCalifornia.
Um, so Bespoken they.
They work on some, um would say, rapid aging and rapid
finishing of barrels and have areally interesting approach.
That place looks like the labof a mad scientist.
(36:18):
You know gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers, everything
there.
The one we ended up pickingthere was a nine and a half year
old hazmat Barton that wasfinished in Riesling, ice line
(36:39):
barrels.
Yeah, it just kind of blew meaway.
So what they do is sometimesthey do have aged product as
well, but then they sort of wrapand finish it and they have
these things I think they callreactors, and it's almost like
anyone ever cooks with sous vide, where you vacuum, seal and it
goes in that warm water.
It'll make a tremendous steak,if you've never done that.
But so they're heatedcontainers and you can do it as
(37:01):
a small batch.
You find out which one you like.
They then simply scale that up.
So everything we tried that daywas that nine and a half year
hazmat Barton finished differentways.
Ultimately we chose that icewine Riesling barrel, and so
then they'll scale that up withthe rest of it.
We have Casey Jones and MBRowland.
(37:24):
We haven't done those yet.
I think we do that late nextweek.
I'm going to try and get thosein one trip.
If anyone hasn't had CaseyJones, their stuff's great.
They came and visited theFrankfurt Bourbon Society, I
think last year, maybe earlylast year, really impressed by
them.
Mb Roland, I've always enjoyedthem for kind of a unique
approach.
You know they take to things.
(37:45):
You know some of their I forgetwhat they call them Like.
It's almost like the Kentuckyfire tobacco where they smoke
some of their, their grains.
So looking forward to go thereand learn a little bit more.
We did that pig at Chicken Cocka while back and I think it was
right around six years old.
You know their proprietarydistillate that's distilled at
(38:08):
Bardstown, so it's theirNashville and I was really
impressed with that one.
Speaker 1 (38:16):
That would be Greg
Schneider's stuff and that's the
stuff that he made.
Those barrels, that barrel pick, should be fantastic.
That will be one I'll be dyingfor.
Speaker 5 (38:26):
No, I was honestly
just very impressed by that.
Uh, james e pepper you knowthat's another one if you have
gone there and gone to thedistillery district in lexington
.
Same thing they're getting someserious age on their product.
Um, you know, I think they'redoing a really good job there.
Um, jet the creed uh, we'regonna go there, I think, this
friday.
(38:46):
Um, I think we're gonna picktheir four-grain bourbon.
Our title sponsor, limestoneHeritage.
I'm really excited to go and doone there.
I've tried a lot of theirproduct.
I'm going to visit them and trysome things from the barrel.
So I'm excited to go there anddo a pick.
Pursuit Spirits we have comingup, I think, in August, short
(39:09):
Barrel.
We're going to pick with themWhiskey Thief, and so you know,
if you didn't try the WhiskeyThief pick last year, you
absolutely missed out.
It was probably my favoritewhiskey I tried last year.
I think it was six years oldbut 134 proof and I think that
(39:31):
slightly younger age at sixyears, I think the sweetness you
know helped knock that.
You know that the feel of thatproof down a little bit.
Absolutely love that.
One can't wait to see what wepick there this year.
Um, you know.
And then one other thing.
So last year we had a littlesnafu with Dark Arts.
They didn't have their licenseyet and the distributor messed
(39:55):
up and sent the wrong barrelpick from Dark Arts.
I saw McCauley at their grandopening, talked to him a little
bit and apparently it's thedistributor, so I think they'll
have it available, um, at theirbooth this year and it was a uh.
I don't remember the stats onage or anything, but it was uh.
It was a bourbon finish in atokai barrel and I love tokai
(40:17):
finish, so I'll be excited toactually buy, buy one of those.
So, um, some great offerings.
I think you know that's a lotto carry around the festival at
one point, but thank goodness Ithink the local Capital City
Shrine Club is going to be backthis year and do the bottle
check If you didn't use thatlast year or if it's your first
(40:40):
time, just like a coat check.
You buy three or four bottles.
You can go up there.
They will put them in an emptycase, your name on a tag, and
hold them for you, and then atthe end of the festival you can
come back, grab however manyboxes of uh, of uh whiskey you
have and take that with you.
Um, of course, shriners greatcause there.
(41:00):
Um, we do make some donationsto them, but uh, don't be afraid
to give them a tip if you usetheir service yeah, that was
great.
Speaker 1 (41:08):
No, I don't have that
problem because we got our own
tent.
That helps.
But yeah, that's super exciting.
You've increased the barrelpicks immensely and each tent,
every year, everybody keepsgoing forward.
What would you say?
And as they go forward, theylearn what they can and can't do
(41:32):
.
So in some cases.
You know there was a lot ofdistilleries that were doing
some special releases last year, but I think all the
distilleries were kind of goingto get on Plus, you've increased
that.
I mean that is an awesomebarrel pick lineup right there.
So I love what.
The rules that kentucky haschild.
They changed the rules for youguys, for the festivals and the
(41:53):
fact that you can.
You I mean this is a you know, once a year experience where you
can pick up some bottles thatyou're you're never going to get
it from.
From collector standpoint, Ithink this year, after all this
happens next year is going to bea challenge to get tickets,
because now you're starting toget the people who are just
going to be coming down thereand they're going to be looking
(42:14):
for and searching for bottles.
That wasn't like the main thingthat was happening the last
couple of years.
People want and were gettingbottles, but they were there to
try all different species andsee what they can have, try all
different recipes and see whatthey can have, whereas I think
you guys are really gettingfocused on bringing in some
people that will be able to um,really, you know around the
country that don't have anopportunity at this and now they
(42:36):
got shot at getting some really, really good um, not just
kentucky bourbon, but you know,in canada and you got you get
all ohio bourbon.
I mean, it's just it to be.
I'm excited.
Speaker 5 (42:50):
You mentioned Ohio,
bourbon.
I love Middle West.
You know Destiny.
She has a continuing educationup in Columbus every year and
while she's doing that, Iusually go visit Middle West at
some point.
I love their product, lovetheir tour.
Nice bar, good food there, Justa great place to visit.
Have you met Ryan?
I have not.
Speaker 1 (43:09):
Okay.
So when I go there one time, how about I butt you up?
Because meeting Ryan, the manwho has put a Jim Beam
distillery in Ohio unlikeanything in Ohio that we've ever
seen, it would be great.
I would love to.
He sponsors the podcast.
The man is, in my opinion, amazing.
He's doing it all on his own.
I mean, he runs that distillery.
(43:31):
He started off with a craftdistillery in 2012, dedicated to
Ohio.
He's now building I think Iwant to say a 15,000-barrel
rickhouse every three months, but the construction company is
his own.
He's got his own constructioncompany.
He sources all Ohio grains.
I mean, it's just fantasticwhat he's doing.
Super, and I would love for youto meet him, amzie.
(43:52):
I'd love to.
I'd love to Let me know andthen you know anytime if you
need any help.
I know you guys have any helpon a barrel pick.
You know I'll volunteer.
Speaker 3 (44:03):
That could probably
be a nice candidate, Amzie.
Speaker 5 (44:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (44:09):
Yeah, I nancy, yeah,
yeah, I think probably.
Good, I'm kind of surprised hehasn't already been on one.
Speaker 5 (44:12):
Me too.
Actually, I always say, jeff,I'll also real quick before I
forget.
Um, I'd like to give a shoutout to uh andrew camden.
Um, hope he is healing up.
Did he have his shouldersurgery the other day?
Speaker 1 (44:23):
I, I didn't.
I saw the post of what hebrought you guys as far as the
barrels.
That was pretty damn cool, wasn't it.
Speaker 5 (44:30):
Yeah, he, he made us
a beautiful, uh, you know,
engraved a barrel the barrel isgreat with a bourbon on the
bank's logo.
Uh, yeah, he and CT broughtthat down.
I met him, I think, last weekwith that, so we'll have that on
display.
Um, at know, uh, hopefully wecan kind of move it around,
(44:53):
maybe have it there friday nightand also at the festival on
saturday.
But uh, just want to giveandrew a shout out.
Really appreciated that.
Hope he is, uh, hope he's doingwell from his shoulder surgery
and and uh, we'll heal upquickly.
Speaker 1 (44:58):
Okay, yeah, I, I did
see that I didn't know he was
actually having shoulder surgery, but that's it.
But same thing.
I hope the best for andrew.
Andrew's a great guy, um thathe has, uh, a talent and he has
served our country, so you knowit's like great.
You know he needs that, heneeds that.
No damage was not fair.
Yeah, so all right, um, do youguys got anything for wrap up?
(45:21):
You know what's what's on,what's what and, in the end,
what's for dessert.
Speaker 4 (45:25):
I want to say real
quick, um, about the friday
events.
I feel like I kind of ranthrough them quick, but, um, the
bourbon pairing with limestoneheritage and peggy no stevens,
that's uh, if that's the stateof the rave.
So if you're looking for aneducational opportunity, you
have to try some really goodbourbon, uh, single cast, and
(45:47):
some really good food from limewater.
But it's, that's a great event.
The friday we were talkingabout all the big bidders for
the auction, but I also want tolet people know that you don't
have to have deep pockets andbid high.
Enjoy that event.
Um, if I has got a lot ofreally good auction items that
are extremely approachable, um,and like I, like we've talked
(46:11):
about having these exclusivepours.
Um, suzy's also working on somereally cool big auction items.
Uh, she had mentioned todayshe's working on a hunting trip
to argentina, which, of course, would be paired with a bottle of
bourbon.
But, um, there's hopefullythere's gonna be some really fun
auction items in there well, that's that takes you out of
your comfort zone.
Speaker 1 (46:31):
A bourbon hunting
trip to Argentina.
Speaker 4 (46:34):
You never know.
And then at first we wantpeople to bring their family if
they want.
We've got a free event onFriday, bourbon Street, on
Broadway, brought to you by afree credit union.
It's going to be bigger andbetter than ever.
We've got several newperformers, we've added, got a
silent disco, we've got a ton ofa ton of things going on.
(46:55):
So we that's completely free, you don't have to spend a dime.
Have a good time.
So if you are coming for thefestival and you're bringing
your family and the kids andstuff, definitely go check out
that event.
It's.
You don't have to be a kid toenjoy it either.
Speaker 1 (47:08):
It's very fun if you
were as well yeah, the street
performers that you guys haveall the time are just, they're
fantastic.
I mean, as it gets dark, thethe fire juggler does a really,
really good job.
I mean, there's no doubt about,uh, how much fun is, you know,
and you know, flick them downand they're eating their meals
and you know, uh, the wholestreet is blocked off, so it's
more like a block party right.
And then, um, you're talkingabout limestone heritage, is
(47:31):
what you called it.
Explain that.
To explain that, what?
they're a title sponsor okay, but what is the difference
between limestone brand andlimestone heritage?
Speaker 5 (47:40):
this is new to me I
don't know different places yeah
, they're completely differentplaces yeah, so, uh, limestone,
limestone, heritage.
Um, they're constructing a newdistillery in Georgetown just
right off the interstate.
They will be when they're upand going I think they'll be the
second largest pot stilldistillery behind Woodford
(48:02):
Reserve.
So they're going all in withtheir distillery.
In the meantime, they'resourcing and blending products
from various distilleries, havesome really good stuff and, yeah
, we'll have to make sure youwatch any touch with them, jeff.
Speaker 1 (48:20):
Bourbon 30 used to be
in Georgetown right.
Speaker 4 (48:24):
Dramatically now.
Speaker 1 (48:25):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 4 (48:27):
And it just sold yeah
.
Speaker 5 (48:28):
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
jeff just sold out to someone
else.
Speaker 4 (48:34):
Okay, yeah, cameras
continue to work, camera man
Okay.
Speaker 1 (48:38):
Because I know which
call it just went to Larkin.
What's Aaron?
Aaron went on to Larkin and soI figured things were changing.
So, yeah, but still Cameron.
I mean, if anybody's ever metCameron, he's really good, he's
a good personality for that, sohe's really good, he's a good
personality for that, so he'sstaying on.
Okay, alright, yeah, becausethat was completely different.
(48:58):
Now Limestone Branch will bethere too, right?
Yeah?
And what is your sponsor,stephen?
Speaker 4 (49:02):
I'm sorry they're not
a sponsor, but they will be at
the event.
Speaker 1 (49:06):
One of your event
participants.
Sorry, not a sponsor, it'll bewith Lothro and Penelope.
Speaker 4 (49:13):
They all grew
together in one tent.
It'll be a larger tent.
Speaker 1 (49:17):
Okay, yeah, that
makes sense.
Speaker 5 (49:18):
It's all the same,
jeff, you're with Bihara, the
guy that did the book.
Speaker 1 (49:23):
Yeah, he was always
on with the Bourbon Pursuit when
they do the talk.
Yeah, he's on the podcast.
He's fantastic, he's fantastic,he's right.
Speaker 5 (49:32):
Yeah, the reason I
want to throw that in is some of
the things he talks about inhis book um, so our, uh, our
sponsor.
They had to slightly changetheir name because there is a
little bit of confusion betweenthe two um yeah, so they were uh
they were limestone farms, yeah, and then, um, limestone branch
wasn't happy with that, so theyhave now changed their name to
(49:54):
Limestone Heritage Distilling.
Speaker 1 (49:56):
So they negotiated
that with not negotiated, but
they made sure LimestoneHeritage wasn't the same.
I mean with them it kind of wassomething different.
Speaker 5 (50:02):
They had to change to
.
Speaker 1 (50:03):
Limestone Heritage?
Yeah, although I can just tellyou where my brain went was it
was the special branch, thatLimestone Branch.
I mean it's the heritage partof it.
Speaker 5 (50:18):
So I mean that, mean
that's, but now that I know the
difference, yes, I've loved it,and I will say also that their
new place is going to be it'sout lower to the interstate,
across from uh.
Is it called yeah, which is?
A uh, a thorough resource.
Uh, we're a terrible.
Um, they have big plans.
You know, maybe some hotels, restaurants, restaurants there,
they're doing some serious workand I can't wait until they're
up and distilling their ownproduct.
Speaker 4 (50:39):
They're hosting
people and doing barrel picks
and stuff out of their barn onthe property there, yeah, where
they have all the stores.
Speaker 1 (50:47):
So is Blue.
Crop up right now too.
That's still running everythingRight, yeah, blue.
Speaker 3 (50:50):
Crop is up right now
too.
Speaker 2 (50:50):
That's still running
everything Right.
Speaker 1 (50:54):
Yeah.
So I mean there's a lot ofexciting new brands coming on
and you know, like we weretalking a little bit before, you
know the bourbon industry, asRay was saying, it's kind of
backed off a little bit, butit's still compared to where it
was just a couple years ago,it's still booming, and so I
feel that this is such a goodshowcase for people, uh, who are
coming on and coming on moreand starting, you know, so that
(51:17):
you can pay their whiskey.
But also, you know some, youknow a lot of them, especially
the ones that are new.
They have their people at thefestival.
Not everybody has their peopleat the festival, but you know,
last year, uh, fanny johnson waswalking around all times saying
hi to everybody for but youknow, for buffalo.
So you know there's so manydifferent people that are out
there.
It's such a fate.
You know that part.
When it comes to the sardine, there is a good amount of stuff
that's happening in Frankfortwhere the local celebrity
(51:38):
bourbon people are showing atthe festival.
Speaker 5 (51:41):
So, mark Carter,
there the last few years just as
an attendee walking around, youwant?
Speaker 1 (51:46):
to hear a cool story.
My wife is a midwife.
She had three women in labor.
She was at one home and I wasin a clean-out garage.
Clean-out garage and I get atext from Christy where's a good
place to go for lunch in Canton?
And my text back was you guysare in Canton.
So we ended up going to Javasi, which is the slurry and winery,
and I had lunch with Mark andChristy and they came back for
(52:09):
an hour and they were sitting atmy bar right down here.
It was on a Sunday, so mywife's working at the house.
I was like you know, your houseis a mess.
I'm like nope.
So we came down and I had todrink the old Carter no 9.
I gave it back to Mark who madeit.
It's just like thoseexperiences, you know, the
Sunday when I didn't have anyplans, all of a sudden that
(52:29):
happens.
It's like you know, one of theguys that makes one of your
eight whiskeys is all runningdown in the podcast deal at the
bar, share a pour, and that'swhat I love about everything.
You know if you guys are everin the area and we know all the
