A remarkable journey through Virginia's whiskey legacy unfolds as Tiny conducts a solo tasting of A. Smith Bowman Cask Strength Bourbon. This exceptional spirit from Virginia's oldest distillery reveals itself as possibly the finest non-Kentucky bourbon ever encountered on the show.

The story of A. Smith Bowman begins in 1927 when its namesake purchased a 7,200-acre farm for dairy and grain production. When his fields yielded excess grain, Bowman made a decision that would change Virginia's spirits landscape forever—establishing a distillery in 1934 that became the state's sole legal whiskey producer until the 1950s. Now owned by Sazerac (the company behind Buffalo Trace), A. Smith Bowman has evolved into an award-winning distillery creating some of America's most distinguished spirits.

What makes this particular bourbon exceptional is found in its contradictions. Despite its intimidating 139.7 proof (69.85% ABV), the 10-year-old whiskey delivers astonishingly little ethanol burn. Instead, drinkers experience a symphony of cherry, vanilla, and distinctive cola notes that create what Tiny describes as "the biggest body I've ever had in a bourbon." The experience culminates in a unique Coca-Cola finish unlike anything previously encountered.

The Old Louisville Whiskey Company Barrel Bottle Breakdown system awards this bourbon a perfect 18/18 score—with the body category even receiving the rare "butt-up-up" designation for exceeding the normal scale. This places A. Smith Bowman Cask Strength among the most highly-rated spirits in the show's history.

Between sips, Tiny shares exciting updates about Whiskey House of Kentucky's financial developments and announces upcoming appearances across bourbon country. He also highlights must-visit bourbon destinations including House of Commons Bourbon Library in Frankfurt and Brad Bond's Vintage Spirits in Covington.

One of the things that there wasthe subject matter that I
wanted to get into.
Yes, that's what it was therewas, and I'll just see, I'm
going to call this up there wasan email today and the email was
, uh, a release.

(05:17):
Let's see, yep, there it is.
So one of the things that, as apodcaster, you get is you get
press releases, and soeverybody's been wondering what
happened.
Because David Mandel andWhiskey House of Kentucky he

(05:42):
opened that Kentucky, he openedthat and they did such a
fantastic job and the speed thatthey built that distillery was
unlike no other.
But you heard some rumors,rumors.
I state that there wassomething up with what was going
on money wise and that you knowyou're always worried a little

(06:02):
bit because everybody's makingso much bourbon and you're not
sure what's going on, becausegood people, just because people
are good, and you would thinkthat the ownership, who owned
Bardstown Bourbon Company andeventually sold and now has
opened the Whiskey House ofKentucky, knows what they're

(06:25):
doing and they do so.
This was the press release.

industry.
And Whiskey House co-founderand CEO, david Mandel, we
appreciate the continuedpartnership from our bank group
in supporting the growthtrajectory of the business as we

(08:18):
look to position ourselves as aleader in custom whiskey
productions ourselves as aleader in custom whiskey

Today's announcement furtherbolsters Whiskey House's
transformative position in thecontract whiskey manufacturing
industry.
Since the start of theoperation on July 1st 2024,
whiskey House has produced morethan 97,000 barrels, 56 unique

(08:43):
mash bills and 59 differentrecipes for its exclusive custom
whiskey production customers.
110 000 square foot distilleryboasts a highly sophisticated
manufacturing system that isfully automated and runs on
priorities proprietary software24 hours a day, seven days a

(09:05):
week.
So there you go.
I mean, that is some reallygood news.
Uh, they were able to sustainmore funds, and I just wanted to
go over that, because when Iget press releases like that, I
don't always uh, you know, getrid rid of, you know, get know,

(09:25):
get into everything.
Uh, there you go.
Okay, all right, what happened?
Okay, I just everything'smoving along on youtube and
facebook.
So everybody, you know this, this has been been being

(09:45):
released, and so just let's getinto the.
The actual a smith bowman.
I've I've got an isaac bowmanpioneer spirit, which was
finished in port barrels, okay, and that was a decent bottle.
But this is a little bitdifferent and I'm pretty sure I

(10:09):
got everything here to make surethat all this goes smoothly.
But let's uh, the a smithbowman distillery is owned by
sazerac.
So that's one thing thateverybody.
There's a lot of things.
So let's go over what Sazeracowns in the whiskey industry.

(10:29):
Well, they own Buffalo Tracethat's the first and biggest one
but then they own the 1792Barton's Distillery making the
1792 brand, plus Thomas Moore, Ibelieve, and one other, but
then they own this virginiadistillery and there's you know,

(10:51):
I've got some information on it, uh, right here.
Uh, what I wanted to go back on.
It's like um, it's aninnovative experiment turned
world's best bourbon.
So this is what happened modeledafter our experimental port
finished bourbon that won the2016 world's best bourbon award,

(11:14):
isaac bowman takes our bourbonaged in america white oak
barrels and finishes it inbarrels that have been
previously used to age port wine.
This results in deep tannins, caramel and spicy notes that are
eligible, combined with flavorof jam-like fruit, refreshingly

(11:35):
smooth, 92 proof finish.
Named for a true Americanpioneer.
Captain Isaac Bowman was asoldier and a militia officer
who fought in the AmericanRevolutionary War in the late
1700s.
He settled at the Fort BowmanEstates in Northern Virginia.
So let's go into there, let'ssee.

(12:01):
So the distiller and let's justread David Bach is ready to take
Virginia bourbon to a new level.
After leading distilling andoperations program at some of
the finest distilleries in NewOrleans, he now calls Virginia
home and leads the A SmithBowman Distillery team With a

(12:23):
keen eye for experimentation andproduct excellence.
He has big plans for moreunique mash bill barrel finishes
and other surprises in storefor the A Smith Bowman
Experimentals.
And let's just see if there'smore about David.
All right.

(12:59):
In his role at A Smith Bowman.
All right, leaning into hiscreative side by crafting unique
mash bills, barrel finishes andother surprises through A Smith
Bowman's experimental series.
Prior to joining the SazeracCompany, david was the head
distiller at Nola Distilling, where he was one of the three
founding members and also workedas a distiller for Celebration

(13:20):
Distillation in New Orleans.
David is looking forward toproducing more award-winning
spirits at A Smith Bowman.
So I probably have to get Davidon, and that would probably be
a kind of a cool thing to dobecause I'm really getting into
what's going on.
You know what I mean.
As far as the original pioneersof distillery, In 1927, before

(13:44):
establishing Virginia's oldestdistillery, a Smith Bowman
purchased the 7,200-acre SunsetHill Farms in Fairlacks County
with one objective to open up adairy and a granary.
Shortly after bringing the ideato life, his fields became so
abundant that he needed to usethe excess grain.
The one defining moment changedthe entire course of the A

(14:07):
Smith Bowman legacy andultimately led to the best
whiskey in the world.
In 1934, a Smith Bowman built agroundbreaking distillery on
the farmland and turned it intothe family-owned business.
With the help of his two sons,he produced the first ever batch
of Virginia Gentlemen.
Of his two sons, he producedthe first ever batch of Virginia
Gentlemen.
Up until the 1950s, a SmithBowman Distillery was the sole

(14:29):
producer of legal whiskey in theCommonwealth of Virginia.
Since then, the focus hasshifted from our classic spirits
to producing premiumhandcrafted small batches and
experimental additions thatembody innovation at its core.
Today, our historicfamily-owned distillery has
relocated to Fredericksburg, yetstill continues to balance our
long-lived tradition, honoringone of Virginia's great pioneers

(14:52):
.
Most recently, in 2016 and 17,a Smith Distillery won the
world's best bourbon at theWorld's Whiskey Awards,
solidifying us as Virginia'smost award-winning distillery.
All right, so there's somereally good, wouldn't you say
background on it?
I like that, um, but I'm gonnatake that back.
Let's just see where we're athere.

(15:14):
Can I go back?
Yes, I can go back right thereand we'll go back up.
Nope, I think we go up to hereright there.
All right, nice background forthat.
So there we are with the asmith background.
Now I'll put on some uh glass, put on my readers here, and I'll

(15:36):
get some light, and so we'vecome so far.
We're like I said earlier.
We're gonna, we're gettingclose.
I believe our 500th is going tobe on.
I said it before july.
I want, yeah, I'll, I'll do itin a sec, I'll tell everybody.
Um, in 1927, abrid, uh, okay,so that's the one.

(16:01):
Cast strength bourbon is atribute to Abramson.
Yep, yeah, I read that.
So the back of it I don't haveto read, and I think that back
is the same here.
So this is Cast StrengthStraight Bourbon Whiskey.
It's produced as the A SmithBowman Distillery.

(16:22):
They even put their number onit.
That's kind of cool.
This is Cast Strength batch 4,69.85, 139.7 proof and 10 years
old.
139.7 proof and 10 years old.

(16:44):
Now, this I'm just going totell you guys, it's like with
this, with this particular one,I swear to God when I got it.
Normally I wait to crack it,but I cracked it and I was, I
was really, really happy withthis.
This is almost at 139.7.
Was that it?
We'll just try this again.

(17:05):
I'm not putting the glasses on,but yep, 139.7.
I'm gonna put it in.
Uh, this glass did.
Oh, here's something.
Uh, I've got my eh, taylorglass.
I picked up I absolutely lovethis, this rocks glass.

(17:26):
It's nothing special, but Ilove the taylor print.
I love the logo.
I had to pick one up.
I got so much glassware but, uh, this one's going to be a
favorite.
I love I got one with the glasswhere, eh, tayh, taylor's
signatures on it, but I justlove that logo that it's
historic.
It's a historic logo, so youknow, kind of cool.

(17:51):
All right, so I'm going to pourit.
Love their bottle shape.
Uh, love their bottle shape.
Uh, the vert.
You know it's kind of like.
I like other whiskeys, but Ithink this is this one here.
Wow, even just opening thesmell it fills the room.

(18:15):
This is a fantastic bottle.
I'm going to pour it in myScotchy Bourbon Boys Glen.
It's 140 proof.
It's not quite a full pour.
I don't really want to do quitea full pour.
I want to be sober for thistonight.

(18:39):
So what we got?
There's a couple things andwe're going to get into it.
Right now we are starting ourOld Louisville Whiskey Company
Barrel Bottle Breakdown.
All right, right, everybody, the way that this works uh, if

(18:59):
you've been a fan or if you havenot, the way it works is that
we rate.
We are going to rate thisbourbon.
Our rating system in the barrelbottle breakdown consists of
knocks on the barrel with mybung hammer, along with four

(19:24):
categories.
The four categories are nose, body, taste and finish.
You can get up to four knockson the nose and the body and up
to five knocks on the taste andthe finish, and up to five
knocks on the taste and thefinish.
If one of the categories isexceptional, you can then give

(19:44):
it a butt up up and that is aperfect score of 19 out of 18.
We've had a couple 18s.
We had one that was 18.5because I think Super Nash gave
it 19 and I gave it 18.
So it was an 18.5.
Have not had a 19,.
I do not believe in a while.
So this should be good and goodto see you also, walker.

(20:12):
And one of the things I like todo when I do the barrel bottle
breakdown is I like to do it inmy Scotchy Bourbon Boys
Glencairn.
This is the perfect tastingglass.
I hope I last time did I do it?
Oh, it's so close again it'sspilled.
But you can set a Glen on itsside and you can let it roll

(20:37):
around in the glass.
Here we come and when you letit roll, it completely coats the
sides.
Now you wait then to see how thewhiskey then runs back into
this dark.
It's the darkness on this one.

(20:58):
The color is a dark amber.
This is a 10 year so, but itstill has not decided to run
back down in.
It's sticking the viscosity.
There you go.
There's the first start of thelegs they're called legs and
this one has is really, reallysticking and just starting to

(21:24):
appear.
It's almost as if the legs areappearing.
Wow, bottom up, it's really, um, this one, the viscosity is
crazy on this one.
So, anyhow, anyhow, I'm reallyliking that.
I'm going to set that as closeas I can get.
Can you guys see that?

(21:45):
Yeah, you can kind of see it asI rotate those legs.
That's really nice.
Now, the tulip shape of this one.
It has this base so you don'theat up the whiskey with your
hand, you keep it in there.
Now, some people, if you wantto heat up the whiskey, then you
hold the top part of it to heatup the whiskey.

(22:05):
The legs on this one are justfantastic.
The aroma coming off thewhiskey concentrates at the top
so that you can betterexperience the nose of what the
whiskey smells like.
Now this is there's a vanillacherry, almost like cherry Coke.

(22:43):
Oh my gosh, it's so good For139.7 proof.
There's no ethanol.
The nose is completely andtotally amazing on this.
Now, when I'm nosing, I willfirst start off smelling at the

(23:07):
bottom of it, but then if youstart off at the bottom, that's
where you pick up those reallynice flavors of cherry, cola,
vanilla, and then you go to thetop, but that consistently stays
the same.

(23:27):
It's delicious.
I absolutely love that.
All right, 139.
This is going to be a palletshock folks, because, all right,
what do we got here?
I don't need to explain likewhat.
Sorry, tom, tom, there are somepeople here that this guy has

(23:54):
no idea.
Yes, okay, that's Tom.
I have no idea.
Yes, okay, that's Tom, you, you, I have no idea.
That's a fun one.
I love the people on YouTube.
I have no idea.
You don't need legs explainedto you.
So, obviously, what's Tom?
What's your favorite glass tosip whiskey from Hello?

(24:19):
More favorite glass to sipwhiskey from Hello Moore.
Good to see you.
All right, so let's go for thetaste.
Wow.

(24:40):
Holy man, holy man, oh, that's apalate shock of flavor.
Woo, the heat it's got.
It's bringing the heat, honeyand, I think, some clove, I will

(25:11):
tell you.
On the top, caramel on thefront, cherry on the back.
It's one of the biggest bodiedwhiskeys I think I've ever, ever
tasted.
All right, I mean I've tasted.

(25:32):
Uh, this is probably the bestnon-kentucky whiskey I've ever
tasted.
It's right there witheverything that Kentucky can do,
but this one, this is justphenomenal.
It hits in my wheelhouseeverywhere.

(25:52):
It's everything that I want ina bourbon.
Let's try it again.
Everything you said, johncaramel, cherry, butterscotch,

(26:17):
but no tobacco, it's cola, it'sa cola finish.
It's so good, all right.
So this is the point that youguys were all waiting for.
Uh, this is the barrel bottlebreakdown.
Uh, on the first, the nose, thesmell.

(26:40):
I could smell this all day.
Just sit here and smell it.
It gets, it's gonna get a fourout of four.

(27:00):
It's not quite I, I would giveit a butt up.
Up it was, but there's certainsmells.
Um, one is breakfast blend fromstarbucks after it's been
ground in the package before.
If you just smell it right outof the package before it's been
brewed.
I could just smell that all day.

(27:20):
That would get a butt up up.
This isn't quite to that level, but it gets a four.
Now, this is the crazy part, right here, right here, by far

(27:53):
the biggest body that I've everhad in a bourbon.
It is so damn delicious andgood and it just goes everywhere
Cheeks, top it, just like, explodes on the roof of your
mouth and tongue under yourtongue, everywhere back of your
throat and then just hangs there.
This is the best body of anybourbon I've ever drank, or

(28:13):
whiskey.
I give this a four With aba-da-bop.
I give this a four with a butup up.
Five out of four.
All right, taste.
So the way I can explain it isyou put it on the tip of your

(28:43):
put in your mouth and it's onthe tip of your tongue caramel
vanilla.
You start to.
As you start to move it throughyour palate to the back of your
throat, there's an explosion ofcherry vanilla and cola.
That then an insane hug.

(29:07):
So from the taste standpointit's not the.
I mean I would say that if Icould give it a butt-up-up I
wouldn't, but I'm going to giveit a five from taste Five.

(29:30):
I think that's what I gave it.
Now finish.
Is it going to pull?
Does it pull it off?
Let's see.
We're in the finish.

(29:53):
What are you getting, john?
On your finish there's the cola.
There it's gone, so it's a mid.

(30:22):
It's not the longest finish,but it's mid.
It's delicious.
I've never had a cola.
It's.
It's like a coke, a coke finish,like coca-cola finish.
It's probably the the firstpart of this.

(30:49):
This whole endeavor between thebody, the taste and the nose is
so fantastic that the colaaspect of this, like there's
nothing else I mean it's alittle cherry in there, but it's
mostly the coke like the colaflavor after you, the flavor
that's in your mouth after youdrink a coke, which I've never

(31:13):
had before.
Honestly, which I've never hadbefore.
Honestly, I'm going to give ita four on the finish.
Why does Coke make people angry?

(31:39):
Maybe the wrong kind, but I'mtalking about Coca-Cola here.
Man, indonesian, indonesia, hello Saku, israel, hello, good

(32:02):
to see you guys.
Then lord cheese, chrissy, niceto see you.
This is, I agree.
Um, this is fantastic.
I just gave this 18 of 19, 18total points, 18 of 18 if you
really want to score.
It got a, but up and then wasone.

(33:08):
