tammie bennett (00:03):
Welcome to the
show up society podcast where I
talk about showing up for yourgoals one tiny step at a time,
I'll help you break down yourbig fat dreams into tiny bite
sized pieces that are totallydoable as long as you just keep
showing up. I talk aboutanything from running to
creativity, to mindset to smallbusiness to whatever else comes
(00:23):
up, you'll see how just showingup for yourself every day in the
tiniest way can make a hugeimpact and change your life. I'm
your host Tammie Bennett, artists coach, habit keeper and
idea machine. I can't wait tocheer you on. So let's get
started.
(00:46):
Hello, friend, welcome toepisode 101 of the show up
society Podcast. Today we aregoing to be touching base with a
few of the previous guests thathave been on the show sort of
like a Where are they nowmoment? And that made me think
of where are you now? And wherewill you be six to 12 months
(01:06):
from now. So we're also going tobe spending some time really
thinking about that. Because Ichallenge you to open yourself
up to the possibility that youcould accomplish more than you
ever thought you could in thenext six to 12 months. So I want
you right now to open yourselfup to possibility and
willingness to think of whatcould be possible for you. Okay,
(01:30):
here we go. So as I was preppingfor my 100th episode, I also
just sent an email to all of myprevious guests asking them for
just kind of a quick email tolet me know what was going on in
their lives and an update and soI heard back from some of them
and I wanted to share that withyou today because I thought it
was really fun. So back inepisode 64
I chatted with Sarah Purcellabout how we can take control
(01:52):
over our aging process one stepat a time. We talked about
osteoporosis and how Sarahreversed her own diagnosis. We
talked about weightliftingmindset tips for exercising even
during quarantine. So let's seewhere she is now. Sarah emailed
me from Ireland where she was ona trip with her entire family to
celebrate her dad's 90thbirthday. How cool is that she
(02:15):
is now an ambassador for theNational Osteoporosis
Foundation. And she'sparticipating in their patient
Pathways project to helppatients find a clearer picture
of their options. She helpscover areas like nutrition and
exercise and medication. A tipfor you is to read Dr. Lenny
Simpson's book called nononsense Bone Health Guide
before you start any course ofaction after you get a diagnosis
(02:38):
of osteoporosis. She says thebook will give you the tools you
need to ask questions and tochoose your path. Her next goal
is she is periodically offeringfree webinars on exercise for
bone health. And I'm going tolink to Sara and all of the
other previous guests in my shownotes at show up society.com
forward slash 101. So if you'reinterested in following up on
(03:01):
any of these previous guests, you will be able to do that and
we'll have links to theiroriginal show also. Okay, next
up is Tiffany McGraw, who Ispoke to in Episode 26. About
filling a need in the greetingcard market. Tiffany's
stationery company called Paperrehab shines a light on women of
color creating community amongwomen and removing the stigma
(03:22):
around mental health. We talkedabout how she was showing up for
herself and creating what shewanted to buy. And she was
helping so many people connectand support each other. So let's
see where Tiffany is. Now. Onereally cool, exciting thing is
that Tiffany's cards are now inBarnes and Noble what a big
dream that is. And Tiffany saysSince being on the podcast, she
(03:44):
realizes that big dreams areworth pursuing, especially when
they are connected to purposethat really has been driving her
towards her big dreams. AndTiffany says when I asked her a
quick tip or advice that shecould give my listener she says
she's still working on fullylearning this. But she says to
just keep showing up foryourself. She says every time I
(04:04):
have found the courage to do soI felt a sense of relief and it
also served other people in theprocess. So I love of course
being that this is the show upsociety podcast. I love that
Tiffany is learning that showingup for herself helps not only
her but it helps the people thatshe's serving with her business.
And I asked what's next forTiffany and she said she's
(04:25):
working on offering more thangreeting cards. It's scary
because some of the thingsrequire a bigger investment but
she says she's reminding herselfthat sometimes the risk is worth
it when you want to continue togrow. So Tiffany, I am wishing
you all the best. Next up ischastity Dotson who I spoke with
on episode 66. She is a writer, actor and founder of the 300 for
(04:46):
300 initiative. She took anegative event which was the
death of Briana Taylor and sheused that to create positive
action and founded the 300 for300 Foundation. She ran 300
miles in eight weeks. To raisemoney for 300 laptops for 300
Girls in Louisville, Kentucky,so they could share their
stories with the world. Welaughed so much on that episode
(05:08):
and we felt so much joy as werecorded the episode. So here is
what chastity is up to now, shesays since we last spoke she's
completed the summer session inLouisville, Kentucky. The summer
session was held at the brandnew state of the art Norton
Healthcare Learning and sportscomplex which was donated to 300
for 300 by the Louisville UrbanLeague. They received their
first grant from the black girlfreedom fund and Les Brown
(05:32):
closed out their summer sessionwith an hour long live stream,
talk to the girls about livingtheir dreams. And listen to what
chastity says about a mindsetshift or realization she's had
since she was on the podcast, this is beautiful. She says
everything is love. It is betterto have faith in this and to let
it guide you. There will bethings at times many that seem
(05:53):
to go against this idea. When acircumstance or a person rejects
you, it will seem like abetrayal of fortune. But it is
in fact fortune. The key is tohave the patience and the grace
to trust that no is no for avery good reason to embrace and
surrender while still fightingfor your great visions. Trust
your instincts. Trust yourinstincts with your whole heart.
(06:15):
If you trust your instincts, youwill have little trouble. Even
if you have setbacks, they willbe part of the journey of
pushing you forward. I thinkthat is so beautiful. A tip or
advice that she gives to mylistener is to love and forgive.
Don't let your anguish dictateyour action. Don't you love her?
And when I asked what's next forher, she says she will build
(06:37):
something beautiful and Itotally believe that. Okay, we
got one more guest update foryou and that is with Colleen
Quigley who I spoke to inEpisode 34. So Colleen Quigley
is a US Olympic track athleteand we talked about building
community and encouraging peopleto live a healthy lifestyle. At
that time, she was aprofessional runner for Nikes
(06:57):
Bowerman Track Club, and she hadwon the indoor mile at the US
National Championships in 2019.
We talked about fast braidFriday, Chef Colleen and
cooking. Collins's Instagramvideos encouraging people to be
more active. We talked aboutyouth running, especially young
girls. And we talked about womensupporting each other instead of
judging each other. So let's seewhat's going on with Colleen
(07:19):
now. So Callie and probably hadthe most changes of any of the
guests that I have had on sofar. So in the past year, she
decided to leave the BARROWMANTrack Club and go off on her own
and partnered up with Lululemonand her old college coach Josh
sites. And then she justrecently moved out of Portland
and will now be based in LAmoving forward, she and her
(07:40):
boyfriend bought a house inFlagstaff where she will be
doing all of her high altitudetraining. She's really excited
about all of these big changesand thinks that the setup is
perfect for her as a person. Andas an athlete. Colleen was
battling with an injury andwasn't able to run in the past
summer's Olympic trials or theOlympics. So when I asked what's
next for her, she said she'sworking her way back from the
(08:02):
biggest and most frustratinginjury of her career this
summer. And she's finallygetting back into some
consistent running over the lastcouple months. The next big
thing she's looking forward tois the World Championships in
2022, which will be held inEugene, before that there's a
World Indoor Championships inSerbia, that would be super fun
to go to. But that's definitelya secondary goal for Colleen.
(08:22):
Her big goal right now isoutdoor worlds. So she has had
some people ask if she isretiring as a runner, but she
said that is very much not thecase. Lululemon supports her and
all of her goals both on and offthe track. And that feels
amazing to her. But she saysthat doesn't mean I don't still
have major goals on the track, too. So Coleen, we are wishing
(08:43):
you all of the best, and I can'twait to see what you do. Okay,
that was so fun for me to hearfrom guests that
you know that I last spoke tosix to 12 months ago. And I'm so
grateful that they took the timeto fill us in on what's the
latest for them. And while I wasreceiving these emails, it
really got me thinking and Ithought about what if I asked
(09:06):
you my dear listener? What if Iasked you to be on my podcast
right now? What would we talkabout? What are you working on?
What are you struggling with?
What are your goals? Where doyou see yourself in a one year,
three years, five years? What doyou do for fun? What are you
passionate about? How are youcaring for yourself? Who do you
spend your time with? Who do youhelp? Do you know the answers to
(09:31):
any of those questions? I thinka lot of us kind of we just it's
like we're on autopilot. It'skind of like you know when we go
pick up our kids from school andwe come home and like we don't
even think about how we get homeall of a sudden we're just in
our driveway. I think that a lotof us kind of get in this place
where we go through life withoutlike, taking command of what we
(09:55):
do and what's happening. And letme just tell This is none of our
faults, this is literally howour brain is created, it is made
to do the most efficient thingto stay in the comfort zone to
do what we know, because itknows it will be safe because
we've been saved so far right.
And so our brains are literallyprogrammed to be really
(10:17):
efficient and to not do newthings and not explore and
challenge ourselves and to justget into that autopilot mode,
because it's so much moreefficient than having to
consciously make differentdecisions. And so if you have
found that you're just kind ofin this rut of life, just kind
of along for the ride, don'tshame and blame yourself, that's
(10:37):
what our brains are made to do.
So in order to get out of thatkind of everyday, same old, same
old, just undoing what I'm doinggo with the flow kind of thing.
You have to make consciousdecisions every day to kind of
get yourself out of that. And soif you feel like those questions
that I just posed to you aresort of a wake up call, because
maybe you don't know the answersyou haven't thought about. You
haven't thought about it, youjust show up and do the thing.
(10:59):
And then you go to sleep and youwake up and you show up and do
the thing and go to sleep. Ifthat is you don't beat yourself
up about it just realize like,oh, okay, my brain is working
just the way it's supposed to.
And if you're not happy withjust doing the grind, doing the
day in day out, if you want morethan that, then you can
consciously choose differently.
And so if you have the answersto what you would talk about, if
(11:24):
I invited you on the podcasttoday, what would you talk
about? If I had you back on insix to 12 months to give us an
update? If I said, where arethey now? And we wanted to touch
base with you, my dear listenerwho was on the podcast? Where
would you be? So if we'rethinking, you know, six to 12
months from when this episode isgoing to be released? That would
(11:46):
be April of 2022 are October of2022? Where would you be? What
is your family situation? Like?
Where are you living? Whatstruggles or obstacles have you
overcome since the last timeyou're on my podcast on October
2021? Right? What will you haveaccomplished by then? What are
you enjoying? What struggles Doyou have? How are you treating
(12:09):
yourself now? Who are youspending time with? Who have you
become? Do you ever spend timethinking about these things? Do
you ever spend time thinkingabout where you will be one year
from now. And what I want tochallenge you with or what I
want to what I want to offer youis sometimes we underestimate
what we can do in a year. So Iwork with my clients for three
(12:31):
months at a time, and many ofthem renew. So we actually end
up working together for sixmonths or more. But even in that
short period of time, my clientshave completely changed their
lives. And so I'm just going togive you some examples. So you
can just see like what you coulddo for yourself in three or six
months, if you just got moreinto that conscious decision
(12:52):
making and you got back intothat driver's seat of your own
life. So my clients have startednew businesses, they've run
multiple marathons, they arecreating pieces of artwork every
single day. They're completelychanging their relationships
with family members or coworkers. They carve out time now
in their busy schedules forthings they want to do for
(13:14):
themselves, like travel, orexercise, or have pure like
focused family time with nothoughts about work at all.
I've had clients create newrelationships with love
interests. I've had clientschange jobs apply for grad
school, in relationships thatweren't serving them, start and
keep date tiny daily habits.
They've completely declutteredtheir surroundings, they've
(13:37):
raised their prices on theirproducts, they started selling
their work consistently andshowed up on social media over
and over selling their goods.
They say no to things that theydon't really want to do. And so
that they have space to say yesfor the things that are
important to them. Those aremassive, massive changes in
(13:57):
their lives. And they did it ina period of three to six months.
But my point of bringing that upto you is to just say hey, like
it's almost to like shake youout of this kind of like half
asleep Ness that maybe you arein to say, hey, there could be
more for you. If you feel likethere is more out there for you.
If you feel like you're not atthe driving wheel of your own
(14:20):
life, if you're just kind of apassenger just going along for
the ride. You can get yourselfout of it. You can create so
much. You can have a great storyto tell in six or 12 months from
now if you were going to be mypodcast and we were going to do
a Where are they now episode onyou. You can create some amazing
(14:40):
results. But you just have tomake those conscious decisions
every day to retrain your brain.
You can literally retrain yourbrain to get out of its comfort
zone to try new things to bewilling to be willing to fail to
be willing to succeed. You canand do all of those things I
promise you. And how cool isthat. So if this episode has
(15:03):
felt like a wake up call to you, that's awesome. And if you feel
like you're already living anddoing the things, that's awesome
too, if you were one of the onesthat wants to shake out of your
rut, and to wake yourself up andto take charge of your life, I
can help you do that. You cancoach with me one on one we meet
once a week 12 weeks, and youwill be amazed at what you can
(15:27):
create in your own life. Ifyou're interested, you can email
me at hello at show upsociety.com Or you can go to
short society.com forward slashcoaching and find out about it
there. So check out my shownotes too if you want show up
society.com Ford slash 101. Thatwill bring you to the show notes
(15:47):
for this episode and you'll seeall the links to the prior
episodes with our guests. And Iwould love for you to go back.
Rewind this episode to the partwhere I gave you the prompts to
ask you the questions about whatyou're doing in your life right
now and where you can seeyourself three to six months
from now. And push pause andjust give yourself five to 10
(16:07):
minutes and write it out and seehow clear you are about what
you're doing now and where youwould like to be. And then at
the bottom of the paper justwrite it is possible for me. It
is possible for me okay, that'sall I got for you today friend.
Thank you for showing up forthis episode of the show up
society podcast no go out thereand show up for yourself
