In Episode 53 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about Math and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). The new Ontario Mathematics Curriculum includes SEL as one of the 6 major strands, and therefore there needs to be more of a conversation about what that could look like when embedded in math programming.  Chey and Pav talked about a few different resources they used to direct their conversation. They have both received lots of training at school with respect to the new curriculum, and a major piece of their professional development over the past few weeks was centered around SEL. Chey and Pav also were lucky to be able to catch the OnEd Mentors Podcast with Noa Daniel. This past week, the live broadcast was focused on the new math curriculum, featuring a few amazing guests, who are all well-versed with mathematical pedagogy. Noa referenced a TedTalk focused around math, called "5 Ways to Share Math with Kids" by Dan Finkel.  In this Ted Talk, Dan discusses 5 principles geared towards sharing math with students. There are important points that Chey and Pav discussed, including - Students need time to struggle, in order to deepen curiosity and the ability to take a risk, and Saying YES to students ideas. The ideas presented were very helpful in establishing a great relationship with students and also helping them along the social emotional pathway with respect to math.  Chey and Pav introduce Santiago Meza, principal from Rosamond, for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Santiago talks about his experiences growing up, and the lessons he learned from his family. He also speaks about his initiative, #RootedInStrengthCA.  After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up with some further exploration of what teaching math with embedded SEL might look like. They give lots of great examples of their own experiences as well.  OnEd Mentors Podcast with Noa Daniel: https://voiced.ca/podcast_episode_post/responding-to-the-new-ontario-math-curriculum/ TedTalk with Dan Finkel: https://www.ted.com/talks/dan_finkel_5_ways_to_share_math_with_kids?language=en Remember to Inspire, Don't Require, always be a Humble Servant, and Education Never Dies.
