Do you have or have you had a loved one in a nursing home? Have you every been in a nursing home? Are you contemplating a move to a nursing home for a loved one or for yourself?
Whether or not you live in California there is much to learn from Mike Dark about the state of nursing homes in every state in the country.
The California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR) is a a statewide nonprofit 501(c)(3) advocacy organization that, since 1983, has been dedicated to improving the quality of care and quality of life for residents in long term care environments - nursing homes and assisted living residences. The organization's initiatives include advocacy, community education, long term care reform, and working on legislation and justice so that consumers can understand their rights under the law.
As the Attorney for the CANHR, Mike Dark speaks candidly about the well-documented long standing situations that have existed in nursing home predating COVID including: understaffing which seems at its root seems to be placing profit over care, inadequate government oversight and enforcement of care standards, and misleading consumer information, inadequate pay for health care workers, insufficient training and education, poor infection control standards, and the list goes on. What is the culprit and what are the remedies? There are no simple solutions. But accepting business-as-usual or that's just the way it is is not what we want for our own loved ones, for ourselves as emerging elders and is a commentary on our society if we cannot provide better care and quality of life for our eldest citizens.
This is a lively and insightful conversation you won't want to miss.
