A buyout offer can feel like a gift, but it can also quietly wreck a retirement plan if you treat the severance cheque like a finish line. Let's walk through the real-world decisions behind Microsoft’s recent reported voluntary retirement style separation package and why moves like this matter to anyone working at a large company. When one major employer offers early exits, the idea spreads fast, and the next offer could land on your desk with a deadline and a surge of emotion.

The five biggest mistakes I see when people accept an early retirement package:

Overvaluing the payout instead of building a durable retirement income plan, underestimating healthcare costs and the Medicare gap, claiming Social Security too early out of fear, forgetting how brutal taxes can be in a package year (salary, PTO, bonus, RSUs, and severance piling up at once), and retiring from something without a clear purpose to retire to.

We also talk through why companies do this, from payroll reduction and reshaping the workforce to freeing capital for priorities like AI and infrastructure.

To help you decide without panic, I share three grounding questions:

Are you financially independent already, does the offer truly improve your position, and what is your best alternative if you stay or work longer?

If you’re within five years of retirement and want clarity on income, taxes, Social Security timing, and healthcare, subscribe, share this with someone weighing a buyout, and leave a review so more people can find it.

SPEAKER_00 (00:01):
Microsoft just made headlines by reportedly offering
a voluntary retirement packageto certain U.S.
employees.
And if you work at Microsoft orany large company for that fact,
this matters more than youthink.
Because when one major employerstarts offering buyouts, others

(00:21):
often follow.
And if a package ever lands onyour desk, the wrong decision
could cost you hundreds ofthousands of dollars over your
lifetime.
Today I want to walk you throughwhat's happening, why companies
do this, and the five biggestretirement mistakes people make
when they're offered an earlyretirement exit package.

(00:43):
Sometimes the package is a gift, and sometimes it's a trap.
Hey everyone, I'm JonathanBedner with Paradigm Health
Partners.
We're here to help people retirewith confidence and clarity and
make smarter financial decisionsand avoid costly mistakes.
According to reports, Microsoftis offering a voluntary

(01:03):
retirement style separationpackage to certain eligible
employees.
That's significant becauseMicrosoft is not typically known
for traditional early retirementoffers.
Usually companies reduceheadcount through layoffs.
This time, Microsoft in thiscase is reportedly offering some

(01:24):
employees the option to leavevoluntarily.
Why would they do that?
Simple.
It can reduce payroll, it canreshape the workforce, and it
can open room for youngertalent.
And it can free up capital toinvest in future priorities like
AI and infrastructure and growthinitiatives.
In fact, it would be myassumption here that Microsoft,

(01:49):
their AI investments over thelast couple of years are taking
root, and they're going to usethis voluntary layoff as a way
to incentivize people to take uhearly retirement because AI has
worked well for them to thispoint.
From a company's perspective, itmay be strategic, but from the

(02:12):
employee's perspective, thequestion becomes should I take
it?
And that's where mistakeshappen.
So the first mistake, the firstthing that you should be aware
of if you are presented withthis package is think about, or
if the mistake is thinking aboutthis package is the opportunity.

(02:34):
When people hear buyout, theyoften focus on the check.
Maybe it's six months of pay, maybe it's 12 months, maybe it
includes benefits, continuation.
And emotionally that can feellike a winning lottery ticket.
But retirement isn't about onepayment.
Retirement is about replacingthe income that you need for the

(02:57):
next 25 or 35 years.
So that's a very differentequation and thing to think
about as you evaluate thispackage.
So before accepting any package, ask yourself, what will my
monthly income look like afterthe severance runs out?
How much will I need every monthto live comfortably?

(03:20):
Now I don't have the detailsspecifically yet of the
Microsoft package, but it'simportant that you think through
this so that you understand howit may impact you in the long
run.
What happens if the market dropsright after you retire?
Can my portfolio sustainwithdrawals long term?
I've seen people accept agenerous package from employers

(03:43):
only to realize a couple ofyears later they weren't
actually ready.
A good package can still be abad retirement decision.
Mistake number two is ignoringthe healthcare costs.
And this is one of the mostexpensive blind spots,
especially over the last threeor four years.
A lot of my conversations withclients is around healthcare

(04:04):
costs in retirement.
People are typically wanting toretire earlier, and they're
trying to figure out how theyare going to bridge the
healthcare gap betweenretirement and when they get on
Medicare.
So if you retire before Medicareeligibility, you may need
private insurance for severalyears.
And depending on your age, location, and family size, that

(04:27):
can be very costly.
Someone may tell me they'reoffering me, let's say,$100,000
to leave.
And my first thought is how muchof that do you think is going to
disappear just in health carepremiums, deductibles, and
out-of-pocket expenses in thistime frame as you move into
retirement or severance.

(04:47):
If you're 60 and you're not onMedicare yet, healthcare could
be one of the biggest line itemsin your budget.
So do not overlook this.
The package may look generousuntil you subtract out that
healthcare cost.

Mistake three (05:02):
Social Security is too early or claiming your
Social Security too early out offear.
This happens all the time.
Someone retires unexpectedly, they're nervous, they're not
sure what to do, and theyimmediately file for Social
Security.
Now, sometimes that's the rightmove.
Other times it's not.

(05:23):
And claiming early canpermanently reduce your benefit.
And for many couples, SocialSecurity becomes one of the most
valuable lifetime income sourcesthey have.
If you have a severant income, taxable savings, part-time work
opportunities, or other assets, waiting could substantially
improve your long-termretirement picture.

(05:45):
The key is to not reactemotionally.
That's sometimes hard to do assome of these things come to
life.
The decision should be strategicbecause once you claim, there
may be fewer ways to undo it.
Mistake number four, forgettingtaxes.
Many people underestimate thetax impact of leaving in a

(06:07):
package year.
You could receive it, yournormal salary, your unused PTO,
bonuses, stock options,compensation, RSUs, severance,
all in the same tax year.
And that creates a surprisinglyhigh tax bill, one that you're
not planning for.
I've seen people think they'rereceiving a large net package

(06:28):
only to realize taxes took ameaningful impact or meaningful
bite out of it.
And this may make sense tocoordinate the timing of the
distributions to help limit someof the tax impact.
Sometimes it may make sense toavoid an extra IRA withdrawals
that same year.
Sometimes, again, it also maycreate future Roth conversion

(06:51):
opportunities once income drops.
But if no one is looking attaxes, you may miss some of
these planning opportunities.
Taxes matter.

Number five, the fifth mistake: retiring from something not to (07:00):
undefined
something.
I see this all the time, allwalks of life.
This is one thing that hasnothing to do with spreadsheets.
I've seen people accept packagesbecause they're burned out,
they're tired, they'refrustrated, they're tired of the

(07:21):
meetings, the politics, thetravel, the stress, leadership,
they hate their boss.
And honestly, those feelings maybe valid, but retirement works
best when you're retiring tosomething, to purpose, to
family, to travel, toconsulting, to volunteering,

(07:41):
mentoring, freedom over yourschedule.
If you're only retiring toescape the stress, the honeymoon
phase will wear off quickly.
Money matters, but meaningmatters also.
We talk a lot about at our firmthat we want to try to align
your core values with yourdreams.

(08:02):
And when we do that, we havethis marriage that really gives
you fulfillment and confidencein retirement.
And it's important that you havethat meaning, that purpose, that
fulfillment, and you're retiringto something.
So should you take the buyout?
If your employer offered yourpackage tomorrow, here are the

(08:23):
three questions I would askimmediately.
Question one, am I financiallyindependent already?
If they offered nothing, couldyou still retire comfortably?
If the answer is yes, thepackage may simply be a bonus.
If the answer is no, you shouldbe careful.
The question two, does thisimprove my position?

(08:44):
Does the offer strengthen analready solid plan, or does it
just create a weak plan thatstill has problems?
Those are two very differentthings.

And the third question is (08:54):
what is my best alternative?
Could you work two more yearsand dramatically improve your
future?
Could you negotiate anotherrole?
Could you take the package andstill earn part-time employment?
Always compare the offer againstyour alternative, not just uh
you know the offer in itself ina vacuum.

(09:17):
Sometimes taking the package issmart, and sometimes staying is
smarter.
So, in closing, a buyout offeris off, you know, often feels
urgent.
There may be deadlines, pressure, emotion, excitement,
fear, but the life-changingfinancial decision should not be
rushed.
You should run the numbers, review your taxes, understand

(09:39):
your healthcare decisions, stress test your retirement
income and your portfolio, andthink about your purpose.
Then decide from confidence, notfrom emotion.
