A million dollars for retirement sounds like the finish line, until you try to live on it and realize there is no paycheck attached. I’m Jonathan Bedner, a Certified Financial Planner with Paradigm Wealth Partners, and in this episode I'll walk you through a simple, practical way to turn a retirement nest egg into monthly income you can actually rely on. The goal is building a system that feels steady even when the market does not.

We start with the familiar 4% rule and why it can be a helpful guide but an incomplete retirement withdrawal strategy on its own. Then we get specific about the real threats retirees face: Taxes, inflation, sequence of returns risk, longevity, and the behavior traps that lead to panic selling or overspending.

I break down the three-bucket strategy: A cash “paycheck bucket” for near-term spending, a conservative bond war chest often built with bond ladders, and a long-term growth engine in equities designed to fight inflation over decades. We run a clear example using Social Security plus $3,000 per month from an investment portfolio, including how to refill each bucket in up markets and down markets so you are not forced to sell stocks when they are down.

SPEAKER_00 (00:03):
If you've saved a million dollars for retirement,
first off, congratulations.
That's an incredible feat.
And surprisingly, not a lot ofpeople accomplish it.
So kudos to you.
There's a problem that nobodytalks about.
A million dollars doesn't comewith a paycheck.
There's no direct deposit orconsistency or even guarantee

(00:25):
that it lasts.
So the question isn't is amillion dollars enough to
retire?
It's actually how do we turnthat million dollar nest day
into a paycheck that you canlive on.
So today I'm going to walk youthrough a simple, practical
strategy we use with clientsthat do exactly that.

(00:45):
I'm Jonathan Bedner, certifiedfinancial planner with Paradigm
Wealth Partners, and we helppeople turn their savings into
retirement they can actuallyenjoy with clarity and
confidence.
Let's break it down.
So most people approachretirement like this.
I've got a million dollars, I'lljust pull 4% per year.

(01:06):
4% is a great rule of thumb.
It's been around for quite sometime, been tested over the
years.
It's a great strategy to use togive you a little bit of
guidance.
That gives you about$40,000 ayear if we assume the million
dollars.
It's not wrong, it's justincomplete because it ignores

(01:29):
the five big retirement risk.
Taxes, inflation, sequence ofreturns, longevity, and your
behavior, like panic selling oroverspending in retirement.
So instead of just pulling fromone big pot, we want to create
something that feels more like apaycheck, provides some

(01:50):
consistency.
So here's the frame framework.
We divide your money into threebuckets, and each will have a
specific job.
The first bucket is cash andshort-term income.
This is zero to one year.
This is your paycheck bucket.
So cash, money market, highyield savings accounts.
This bucket is where we're goingto fund your monthly income.

(02:14):
So if you needed$3,000 a monthfrom your investment portfolio,
this is where we're going totake it from.
No market risk, no guessing.
Most of my clients set up aspecific day of the month that
they're going to have thisdirectly deposited into their
account.
We set that up, and it turns onlike clockwork gets deposited to

(02:35):
them.
That's what we're trying toaccomplish for you.
The second bucket is uh your warchest.
This is your backup paycheck.
So this is high-quality bonds, bond ladders.
We use a lot of bond ladders atour firm, conservative
investments.
And this is what allows you tokeep your income consistent and

(02:57):
constant during downturns andallows the rest of your account
to grow over time.
The third bucket, this is yourgrowth engine, your long-term
bucket.
This is your stocks, your uhequities, your growth
investments.
This money isn't for today, it'sfor 10, 20 years down the road.

(03:19):
And as it grows, so your incomeis able to keep up with
inflation.
We know a dollar five years fromnow is going to buy less than a
dollar today.
So it's important that we havethis growth engine invested in a
way that will help keep up withfuture inflation.

(03:40):
So, how does this actually workin real life?
Let's say you need$60,000 peryear,$24,000 or$2,000 a month
comes from Social Security.
The remaining$36,000 or$3,000 amonth comes from your investment
portfolio.
Again, we're turning your nestegg into a paycheck.

(04:00):
So the first step in doing thatis to multiply the$3,000 a month
we need from your investmentprof portfolio by 60 months.
That's$180,000 a year.
So we're gonna put$36,000 intothe first bucket, the cash
bucket, the paycheck bucket.

(04:20):
We're gonna put$144,000 intobucket two.
This is your war chest.
This together gives you a fullyfunded five-year war chest.
You pull your monthly incomefrom bucket one, that$36,000 in
cash or high-yield savingsaccount, that will continue to
pay you on your designatedsequence that you've elected.

(04:44):
The key here is when markets aregood, you refill bucket one from
your growth engine bucket.
If the market is up 20%, great.
Peel some of that off, move itto bucket one, and you replenish
your bucket.
When markets are down, yourefill your bucket from bucket

(05:05):
two.
This is your war chest bucket,so we're gonna tap into the
second year there, and we'regonna use that to continue to
give us the steady income thatyou're used to, and that way
you're never forced to sellstocks while you're down.
Here's where most people runinto trouble.
They either stay aggressive toolong and they panic during

(05:28):
downturns, or they get tooconservative and they run out of
money long term, they don't haveenough growth long term to
combat inflation, or they don'thave a plan at all.
And I see a lot of people fallinto this category.
They don't have a strategy, they're just guessing every year
on what they can spend, um, howto how to allocate their money,

(05:53):
what's the next hot stock tobuy, what what their neighbor
told them.
There's no strategy on how doyou turn your nest egg into a
paycheck.
That's where this strategyreally comes together.
We have a very systematicstrategy so that as we uh have
growth in the market or evenmarket downturns, your

(06:16):
retirement income continues sothat you don't miss a beat.
So the goal isn't just towithdraw money, the goal is to
create consistency andconfidence and a framework that
you can stick with.
The best retirement plan isn'tabout uh looking good on paper
or looking good to yourneighbor.
It's one that you can actuallyfollow even when the market gets

(06:40):
uncomfortable.
If you're within a few years ofretirement or already retired,
and you're trying to figure outhow to turn your savings, your
investments into a realpaycheck, this is exactly what
we help people do every day.
