How Can You Trust the Doctor if You Believe He’s the One Who Gave You the Disease?

The Parable of the Sower — affliction aimed straight at the word

Pastor Eddie explains how affliction and the word of God collide in the Parable of the Sower. When Jesus describes the seed that falls on stony ground, He names exactly what happens next: affliction rises up "for the word's sake," aimed at choking it out before it can take root. Two Gospel accounts anchor this teaching most clearly — Mark 4 and Luke 8 — because both name affliction and the devil in the same breath, working toward the same goal: keeping the word from bearing fruit.

Mark 4:15–17 — "And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; and have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended."

Matthew 13:20–21 — "But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended."

Luke 8:12–13 — "Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away."

In all three accounts, the affliction and the enemy are tied together directly — the trouble shows up "for the word's sake" or "because of the word," and its purpose is to choke belief before it takes root.

The devil as the source of oppression and affliction elsewhere in Scripture

• Job 2:7 — "So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown."
• Luke 13:16 — Jesus describes a woman crippled eighteen years as one "whom Satan hath bound."
• Acts 10:38 — Jesus "went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him." Healing is framed as reversing the devil's oppression.
• 2 Corinthians 12:7 — Paul's thorn in the flesh is called "the messenger of Satan to buffet me."
• 1 Thessalonians 2:18 — "We would have come unto you… but Satan hindered us."
• 1 Peter 5:8 — "Your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour."
• John 10:10 — "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy," set against Christ, who comes to give life.
