Aloha, and welcome to Your Heart Magic, an
illuminating space wherepsychology, spirituality, and
heart wisdom meet.
Here's your host, Dr.
Bethane Kapansky Wright, author, psychologist, and spiritual
educator.

SPEAKER_01 (00:33):
Aloha, everybody.
Welcome to Your Heart Magic.
This is Dr.
Bethane Kapansky Wright, and itis Libra season.
And so today we are talking alittle bit more about the
archetype of Libra and how wecan work with the energy of
Libra season to support our pastat this time.
I was laughing as I sat down andwas putting together notes for

(00:57):
this podcast because I'mactually a Libra rising in my
astro chart.
And so I have a lot of Libracharacteristics.
And as I was writing out some ofthe key characteristics of
Libra, like appreciation ofbeauty, finding balance, seeking
harmony, being a peacemaker, Ifelt like, oh my goodness, this

(01:20):
is like every episode of YourHeart Magic.
So much of the things that wetalk about on this podcast are
very Libra vibe-ish.
So talking about Libra and thearchetype of Libra feels like
such a natural segue for myself.
And I actually had to thinkabout it a little bit to ground

(01:41):
the topic because I feel likelast week's episode, which was
celebrating the equinox andfinding balance, could almost be
synonymous with the Libraarchetype.
And I actually love that EquinoxFalls right as Libra season
starts.
Libra season begins on September22nd and it runs until October

(02:02):
22nd.
And Libra is an air element.
It is represented by a set ofscales in the zodiac.
And as mentioned earlier, someof the key words associated with
Libra are balance, harmony.
The scales also bring in theenergy of justice and fairness.

(02:24):
Libra is about appreciatingbeauty as an air element.
And so those who have a lot ofstrong Libra energy are often
very good diplomats.
They can be excellent at seeingboth sides of something.

(02:46):
The more that I have understoodabout Libra and working with it
as my rising sign and justunderstanding astrology and how
my own star chart reflectscharacteristics in me, I often
think, well, no wonder I becamea psychologist, because I think
one of the aspects of thisparticular profession, my

(03:07):
profession, is the ability tomeet people where they're at and
understand something andempathize from their point of
view.
And one of the weaknesses ofLibra or the challenges, I
should say, is decision-makingfatigue or indecision because of
that ability to see all sidesand to try and find fairness and

(03:31):
please everyone.
So sometimes the shadow side ofLibra might look like people
pleasing.
When I was younger, I was verymuch a people pleaser.
It's something that I've reallyhad to work with throughout my
adult life.
But when I was really young, like back in college, I remember
not so much the people-pleasingaspect, but it seemed like

(03:52):
whoever I was having aconversation with, I would agree
with them and I would see theirpoint of view.
And I used to wonder back thenif it meant I didn't have a
well-formed opinion.
Like it was a little bitconfusing for me why some people
seemed to really know their mindand they know what they believed
and they had this sense ofconviction.

(04:13):
And I felt like was Iwishy-washy?
Because I could see all sides ofthe issue and would find myself
agreeing with people.
And as I started to learn moreabout personality types and
different personalitycharacteristics, I realized not
at all, that it was actually agift and the ability to be
sensitive and to empathize withothers and to understand their

(04:35):
point of view.
And as I've developed, Iobviously have beliefs and
convictions and things that I ampassionate about that form my
own point of view.
But I now see that Libra, partof myself, can understand things
from multiple perspectives.
And so sometimes that mighttranslate for me being less

(04:57):
rigid about something and moreopen-minded.
But the flip side of that ishaving to really work,
especially as an empath, to comeinto my personal space, my
energy, and ask myself, well, what do I think?
What do I believe?
And to find my voice and myperspective and what can feel

(05:18):
like a great sea of voices andperspectives when I really start
to open up and look at thingsfrom multiple sides.
So I love Libra.
I'm very familiar with thearchetype.
Your heart magic is veryLibra-esque, as I said.
But I do want to talk abouttoday three ways that we can
work with this archetype andwork with the energy of Libra

(05:41):
season at this time.
One of the first things that thearchetype of Libra invites us to
do is to seek balance andharmony in our lives.
And last week we were talkingabout balance and equinox and
finding balance in our lives.
And I threw out the idea thatsometimes I think balance can be

(06:02):
really hard to achieve in agiven moment.
I think that with change being aconstant and our lives being so
in flux, the minute we thinkthings are perfectly balanced,
something is bound to come alongand knock that out of orbit.
Or maybe we get things intoalignment and it feels really
balanced.
And then our soul starts tohunger for growth and we get a

(06:25):
little bit restless, a littlebit discontent with having
everything be just so.
I think we are called so oftentowards movement when we've been
in a season of rest, or restwhen we've been in a season of
movement.
And so the best way that I haveto understand balance is in
terms of the bigger picture andbelieving that if we can tune in

(06:50):
and listen to ourselves, thatlife has a way of moving things
along and moving us towardsbalance.
And if we can trust our soulcycles and trust that voice
inside of us, that we might notalways feel perfectly balanced
in a moment, but we can trustthat in the bigger picture, if
we're tuning into our soul, weare moving towards harmony in

(07:12):
our lives.
And so even if balance feelsunobtainable in a moment, life
has a way of bringing thingsaround and helping us find a
more harmonious path if thingsget a little too out of whack.
I do think it's helpful in Libraseason to ask the question where
in my life right now could I usemore balance?

(07:35):
What does balance look like forme?
What comes to mind when I thinkabout living in harmony?
And how does this apply to mypath?
There's always really greatinformation that we can come up
with when we look at thosequestions and ask them in a
non-judgmental way and see howthis apply to me at this point

(07:57):
in time.
What balance means to me rightnow in this Libra season of 2025
might look really different fromwhere you're at in Libra season
this year.
You might have a completelydifferent definition of what you
need for balance or whatenergies or themes in your life
might feel out of balance.

(08:17):
And so I love this as ajournaling prompt and think it's
a great one for Libra season tosee what kinds of things we
might want balance with.
If we've been really busy orabout other people, maybe
balance is coming back intoourselves and listening to our
soul.
If we've had a lot of downtime,a lot of alone time, and we feel

(08:38):
like we need some energy stirredup, maybe balance looks like
finding ways to connect orfinding places to plug into.
Libra often seeks partnership.
So another characteristic ofLibra is partnerships in some
shape or form.

(08:58):
So sometimes balance in ourlives might apply to our
relationships and apply to areasin our life where we could do
more give and take, morecompromise.
There's so many ways that wemight answer that question.
So it's a really goodself-exploratory one to ask
yourself this Libra season.
Something else that Librainvites us to do is to see

(09:21):
things from multipleperspectives.
As mentioned earlier, Libra isabout fair-mindedness.
It is about justice.
And so it's about the mind, thoughts, how we think.
And so right now, this is areally good time to work on
expanding mindset, to try andsee something from another point

(09:45):
of view.
I think when in doubt, if wefeel stuck in something in our
life, we could always trysaying, well, how would an
observer see this?
If I was a narrator or I wasjust observing my circumstances
or observing the situationwithout judgment and without
having to interpret it, but justmaking an observation, what

(10:08):
might that be?
What's the observer's point ofview?
How might I narrate that if Iwas writing a story?
I think it's really interestingto play with mindset because it
helps keep our mindset flexible.
It allows us to think in anadaptive way.
It allows us to consider others'points of view in an adaptive

(10:28):
way.
And I think when we're open toexpanding our mindset and seeing
something from a different pointof view, it helps us loosen our
attachment to being right, tofeeling that our position is
right or our perspective isright.
It helps shake things up alittle bit mentally and invites

(10:50):
us to consider what if, or howmight I flip this and look at it
differently.
And it allows us to takesomething that maybe has felt
really stuck or we have feltreally confused on and find a
vantage point to look at it fromthat might feel unique or fresh

(11:11):
or different.
So something that we can alwaysdo to help expand mindset if we
are feeling stuck in our livesis to ask ourselves the

question (11:20):
how could I look at this through the eyes of love?
How could I look at this throughuniversal grace?
How can I bring joy or levityinto this situation?
What might love have to sayabout this?
Anytime we're able to draw onour spiritual principles, our
heart-based principles, andapply those to how we are seeing

(11:44):
something, it's usually a funway to find a unique viewpoint
and to help us shiftperspective.
For example, I was thinkingabout earlier when I was
contemplating balance and waswriting down that first talking
point as seeking balance andharmony.
That what does somebody do iftheir life is really out of

(12:06):
balance and they feel like I'dlove to have a more balanced
life right now, but it's justnot feasible for me.
Maybe somebody's really taxed interms of time or demands, or
something is happening thattheir life is just in a lopsided
place at this time, and theyhaven't had what they need to
fill themselves back up or filltheir energy back up, or they

(12:30):
really yearn for being able todo things that would slow life
down or bring it back intobalance, but it's not the season
for it.
And I was thinking about howgrace and love are always these
equalizers when we bring theminto the equation.
And so even when our lifedoesn't look the way that we
want it to, and it might feelreally out of balance, grace can

(12:52):
come in.
The concept of grace, theuniversal energy of grace, love
can come in.
And by love, I mean thatuniversal life force, that
cosmic flow of love can comeinto a situation and it can
soften it.
And grace, our love might say, take a deep breath.
It's all going to be okay.

(13:13):
This is just a season, nothingmore.
Life is going to help move thisalong.
You won't always be in thisplace.
You will find your way through.
Be still in this moment.
You are safe.
You are okay.
Grace would ask us to forgiveourselves for being out of
balance.
It might ask us to forgiveourselves for whatever we might

(13:33):
feel stuck with or whateverwe're struggling with.
Grace would take the wholesituation and it would flip it
upside down and it would find away to help us find our
rightness, our alignment, ourbalance, even in the middle of
circumstances or something thatfelt out of balance.
And that kind of a mindsetshift, that kind of an opening

(13:55):
of the heart, opening ofperspective, opening of ourself.
It's a wonderful illustration ofthat idea of what would love
have to say about this?
How could I look at thesituation through the eyes of
love?
So when in doubt, go back tolove and grace and bring those
into the equation and see ifthose concepts can help open up

(14:19):
your heart, open up your mind, and help you move towards a
space of breath and balance inyour life, no matter where the
circumstances are.
The last thing that I wanted totalk about today is Libra's role
with appreciating beauty andnoticing beauty.
And again, I talk about this allthe time on the podcast.
I really was laughing when I satdown to do this archetype

(14:43):
because I think that sometimessome of the archetypes are a
little bit different than topicsthat I would usually choose to
talk about.
And so it's something that is afresh challenge to me to bring
in a new idea, a new topic.
But when I was looking at Libra,I thought, oh my goodness,
probably three-quarters of thepodcast that I've done over the
last year, maybe even more thanthat, could all fall under the

(15:06):
umbrella of Libra virtues, because those are the kinds of
things that I'm alwaysinterested in talking about on
here and noticing beauty, appreciating beauty, finding an
eye for beauty is such a bigone.
And finding a way to findgratitude, find something
beautiful, find something sacredeach and every day.

(15:27):
And so Libra season invites usto appreciate the beauty in our
lives, to create beauty, to seebeauty through the lens of love,
to see what's already beautifulabout our journey, about our
path, about our life, to seewhat's beautiful in the world
around us.

(15:47):
That's a wonderful challengeright now at a time where I
think it's really easy to seewhat's not beautiful in the
world around us.
And Libra asks us to look atsomething through a slightly
different gaze and see, well, what's beautiful about this?
If there is a room full ofpeople disagreeing, can I see

(16:08):
any beauty and the fact thateverybody's perspective or
vantage point is a uniquereflection of a color in the
greater web of life, the greaterkaleidoscope of life that's made
up of so many shades and hues?
If I'm out in nature and I seesomething that is about death or

(16:29):
decay or something in naturethat's not my favorite element,
can I take a step back and seefrom a bigger perspective and
see nature symmetry and hownature uses everything, every
insect, every tree, everyflower, everything that is
growing out there as part of agreater ecosystem?

(16:52):
And so everything has a place.
Can I see the beauty in that?
And so Libra invites us to seethings from that more holistic
perspective of what isbeautiful, what is lovely about
this, how can I appreciate thesymmetry, the harmony of the
whole?
I wanted to share a passage withyou today from Revelations of

(17:13):
the Sky that speaks to the ideaof appreciating beauty.
And I wrote it at a time in mylife where I'd really been
struggling.
And I was trying to come backinto a space of gratitude and
noticing beauty and appreciatingwhat was good in my life.
And so I felt like this passage, which I actually wrote in Libra

(17:34):
season right around this time, multiple years back when I
published this book, but it'scalled Harvest Moon.
And I wrote it in September ofthat year, and I thought it
might illustrate some of theconcepts that we're talking
about today.
Harvest Moon.
It was a strange kind of summer.
The kind that came with a fewroller coaster twists and turns,

(17:57):
which felt like they wentagainst the grain of what should
have been easy, buttery days.
I'm coming to learn that's justlife.
Last summer we were grapplingwith losing Sam.
This summer came with its ownchallenges.
A lot of growth has happenedwithin the pages of these two
summers.
Now it's fall.

(18:18):
Well, it's fall in my heart.
We do live on an island, whichmeans autumn is not the same for
us as it is for most in thenorthern hemisphere.
It's not usually until Novemberthat we begin to see temperature
drops.
I can feel the crisp breeze inmy interior, anyways, as if some
rugged wild Alaskan part of mewill always roam the cranberry

(18:41):
tundra this time of year.
Peer down at ochre fairy talelike mushrooms, delight at the
first gold touch of the leaves.
Even if those experiences onlyhappen now in my spirit and
mind.
The trade winds are coming backto the island though.
The guava berries are ripe andwill begin to sprinkle the

(19:01):
trails with crab apple red andbanana yellow throughout
September and October.
The harvest moon is coming soon, denoted by the full moon closest
to autumn equinox.
For anyone living in tune withnature cycles, it's a natural
time of the year to take stockand receive the bounty of the
seeds you've been planting inyour life.

(19:23):
It's also time to think aboutthe seeds you want to plant in
the next cycle.
I'm still sifting through whatthat is for me, but I know I
want those seeds to feellighter, more gracious, and more
appreciative.
I never expected to struggle somuch on this island and to be
stretched, challenged, and grownso some of those challenges have

(19:47):
robbed me of the lessons of myyounger years, and I feel the
call to return to my heart'sroots and reclaim any territory
I've ceded.
There was a time somewhere backin 2012 that I think of as my
post-divorce, single in my early30s, finding myself again years.

(20:08):
In this season, I wasreconstructing life and learning
what it meant to fall in lovewith my life.
To be in a love relationshipwith life itself.
This was the time in my lifewhere I learned the more you
appreciate and value your life, the more your life will
appreciate and value you.
My heart center was wide open, and I suddenly felt connected to

(20:31):
the world in a way I never hadbefore.
I was coming to a deeperunderstanding I was in a
relationship with myself and theworld around me.
I'd often go to the park, sit ona bench with my loyal elder pep
Peppy, and talk to the sky in myheart.
Simple things made me happy.
Books, candles, sandwiches.

(20:53):
I began to see myself as acreative being who could bring a
sense of artistry into my daysby wearing playful clothing and
developing an eye for findingbeauty and extraordinary and the
ordinary.
My feelings became gateways thatled me to intuitive truths in
myself.
My art journal and blog becameways to process my experience as

(21:17):
self, understand my waters andflows, and tell my stories in a
way that brought depth, color, resilience, and truth to things,
no matter the topic.
Mostly what I learned duringthis time was a deep sense of
self-love, the importance ofvaluing my life, finding joy in
the everyday, and being apractitioner of appreciation and

(21:40):
beauty.
Hard things happened during thislife season, but I'd poured so
many truths of light into thesoil of my soul.
I was able to navigate them andstill maintain reverence for my
life.
Here it is, eight years later, and I feel called to take a few
lessons from my younger self andbring back the wisdom I

(22:00):
discovered in those years so Ican release and transform the
bitterness, pain, and emotionalsuffering I've been feeling.
Allow myself to return to thebasics of tending a happy heart
and a happy life.
Relax into an even deeper levelof patience with whatever I'm
creating in this phase of mylife on Kauai.

(22:22):
Redevelop a gaze of thoughtfuljoy and fairy tale wonder.
Those are the seeds I want toplant this fall.
I still have creative andprosperity goals, but I know
those material things won't meananything if the immaterial isn't
anchored in grateful reverence.
Grateful reverence, likeanything else, requires careful

(22:44):
tending and energy, lest itbegin to weather and wilt.
So with that, I asked myself aquestion this morning.
What would happen, Beth Ann, ifyou made it your goal over the
next few months to look for allthe gratitude you can?
What if you returned to thebeauty way and found all the
beautiful moments you could ineach day?

(23:06):
What if you made it a point toappreciate even when things
don't go as you thought?
Falling in love with your lifeis the only way to find peace
and the change.
This is when you're mostconnected to yourself.
This is when you're most wise.
This is how you return to theheart of where your true wealth

(23:26):
resides.
I love that passage.
I wrote it back in 2018, and Ithink that is the bigger lesson
of Libra season.
It is the focus of returning tothe heart, returning to
gratitude, returning toappreciating beauty, finding
joy, noticing what is good, finding the path of peace

(23:50):
through being open-minded andopen-hearted, being willing to
shift our mindset when we'restuck or rigid or getting into
negativity, seeing things fromanother point of view, valuing
the people in our lives, even ifwe struggle with some of them,
and valuing how our partnershipshelp us grow and transform and

(24:12):
change and learn lessons anddeepen our heart wisdom and
remap our boundaries, findingthe perfect beauty and the
imperfection of the whole thatis our life.
So, with that, happy Libreseason, everyone.
I will be back next week with anall-new Your Heart Magic
episode.

(24:32):
In the meantime, have abeautiful week.
Welcome to October.
Here we are.
And as always, be well, be love,be you, and be magic.
