Speaker 1 (00:00):
ESPN beat writer covering the Chicago Bears, frequent ESPN Radio
and Mothership TV contributor and covered the Bikes for a
spell too, and always enjoys this division rivalry between the
Bears and the Minnesota Vikings.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Hello, Cec, It's Paul Allen. How have you been.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
I'm great.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
How are you doing excellent?

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Thank you very much for making time and you know
the the before we get into this division collision. The
last handful of years, beloved Cordney, last handful of years,
you've hosted mucho radio shows to compliment the television part
that you've done for for I think more years.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
What do you like more? And why radio or TV?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Oh boy, put me on the spot here. I think
the TV element and like getting a chance to you know,
I guess the opportunities that's opened up for me the
last couple of years have been really cool because I've
gotten to do a multitude of roles, getting to host,
getting to be an analyst, getting to be a reporter,

(01:04):
getting to do sideline. Like I've enjoyed all of it,
and it's it's crazy to think, like how much I've
packed into this season alone, Like my roles have expanded
quite a bit just beyond the Bears, and I enjoy it.
I love I love all of it. But I mean
radio is Radio is going to be my bread and
butter forever. Like that's the OG in my opinion, because
it gave me the ability to learn how to debate,

(01:26):
to learn how to make a clear and concise point,
and be able to talk about a lot of different things,
not just football.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
That's a spectacular, wonderful answer to the game.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
So the Bears.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
So the team is running for one hundred and eighty
five per since the buye is developing the clutch gene
off the last two and is winless in the division.
What are what are the Minnesota Vikings getting this weekend
with the Chicago Bears.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
You're getting a resilient team that I think now has
the proof of cons since the last time they played
the Vikings that they can close out type games, which
they've done now. I mean, Caleb Williams has four fourth
quarter drives that have led to wins.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
That's tied it for.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
The most right now behind Eve Baker, Mayfield and Bonnix.
So it's the clutch gene that they're developing, which I'm
sure some Viking fans here that and think twenty twenty
two all over again. Different team, obviously different circumstances, but
wild wins that end in wild games that end in
how did they just win that fashion? And you've got

(02:35):
a quarterback who's developing like it's taken Caleb Williams ten
to eleven weeks now to I think feel fully comfortable
using his full skill set, which you saw to beat
the Giants, relied on him to use his legs that
twenty nine yard scamper to get down to the two
yard line to set up Roma Dunze for the touchdown
and then the seventeen yard touchdown at the end of

(02:56):
the game. Like they're putting it together. It came along slowly.
They didn't come out and start beating teams, and obviously
those two division games and two division losses, that's brutal.
That's a whole that they have they've got to dig
out from. But they've beaten the teams that they should beat,
and a lot of people are going to look at
the defensive performances of the Bengals, of the Giants, of

(03:18):
the Commanders, especially that Commander secondary, and certainly the Cowboys
are not very good either. And be like, well, they
beat up on some bad teams. But if you're a
team that's trying to change the culture and do things differently,
shouldn't you be I guess, proud and touting the wins
that you had, even if they do come against bad teams.
But that's the part that I think they're not going

(03:38):
to apologize for because it does come at a cost
of you know, if you want to beat the good teams,
you have to demonstrate you can do it against the
teams you're more evenly matched with first. And I feel
like that's where they are right now coming into this
game in week eleven.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Right, all right, but with the Bears Courtney, when when
they do get into trouble, no matter against home, well,
let's say when they get into trouble against non playoff
teams like the Bengals or the Giants or the Raiders,
what generally is happening.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
Well, I mean the reason they got in trouble against
the Bengals was, I mean, it's kind of it's two
different things. So they're up, they almost go up by seventeen,
and if that pick six wasn't called back, and then
they give up two touchdowns in the stretch of forty
nine seconds, So that makes Caleb Williams and the offense
have to go into hero mode to carry the defense.

(04:31):
And the defense had carried this offense for so many
weeks that it was an encouraging sign for Ben Johnson
to see that his offense, on a day where they
pulled out every trick play I think they had in
his playbook, was able to pull off that win and
find a rookie tight end who had been underutilized as
a whole up until that point, and get Colson Lovelin

(04:52):
involved for the game winning touchdown. Like that, to me
was the reason the products of the comeback there for
like you know, letting it get close and then letting
the come happened. But against the Giants, I think it's
like twofold. The Giants were the worst sports quarter team
in the NFL, as evidenced by what you saw in
Denver a couple of weeks ago, and the Bears knew that.
But the Bears didn't do themselves any favors by not

(05:14):
putting a spy on Jackson Dart and letting him get out, break, contain,
and rush for two touchdowns like honestly, pain if I
think if he finishes that game, if he doesn't leave
with a concussion, I don't know that it's a win
for Chicago.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
They don't.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
I think that it was a product of circumstance but
also timely blitzes what they saw from CJ. Gardner Johnson
to pin the Giants back in their own territory on
in late and third quarter and then start to get
the offense in better field position. Like that came along
later than they probably would have hoped, but at least
it was at the right time for their sake to
be able to pull off wins.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
The left tackle.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Okay, now I'm assuming the name is pronounced THEO Benedette.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Is it Benedett?

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Correct?

Speaker 2 (05:54):
Okay? Correct?

Speaker 4 (05:55):
It is?

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Who is he and why does he play over for Pillow?
The second round rookie from Boston College.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
So THEO Benedette is a former undrafted free agent from
the University of British Columbia. So he's Canadian. His nickname
is the Canadian Eagle. He was somebody who's the last
bast brought in as a college tryout guy. He sticks
and he's on the practice squad all year. He got
inserted into the mix at left tackle right around the

(06:28):
time of the Buffalo preseason game because being incumbent starter,
Braxton Jones was not looking good and Ozzy Trappillo, who
they drafted to play like he's a right tackle. Like
Ozzy's a right tackle. They drafted him thinking, hmm, maybe
we can turn him into a left tackle, because that's
worked a bunch of times in the NFL when coaches
in front off of people get over zealous and think

(06:49):
that they can be the ones to change a player.

Speaker 4 (06:51):
They're like, oh.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Wait, yeah, he's actually a right tackle. And Corona Magazi,
who is a left tackle, just never really cracked the
depth Charty's kind of third. So Ben Johnson didn't like
what he was seeing, decided to throw theo Bennett into
the mix and he ends up not litting the job then.
But when there was a window to make a change,
which was the byproduct of an early bye week, it

(07:12):
really you know the Raiders game, they make the change
before halftime. That's why Bennettette was in and Jones was benched.
And I think with Azzi Turpillo right now, there's no
real spot for him outside of the jumbo package when
he's the extra ligneman that does that mean that he's
a myth? No, Darnott Wright's playing great football. He's a
really good right tackle. I don't know where you're going

(07:33):
to play this guy if you're trying to spin this
thing forward, if he's not a left tackle and you
already have a really good right tackle. So it's kind
of a pickle, and it makes me think that maybe
they overshot their luck on this right now, unless they
can develop into a left tackle. But as it currently stands,
that is absolutely not what he is and they've had
no qualms in admitting that.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
CEC Courtney Cronan, ESPN, ESPN dot Com at Courtney R.
Cronan via Twitter if you'd like to follow and are
sewings line like nine to noon, just a few to
close here for CC the Bears. How how are they
plus fourteen in the take give but they don't sack
the quarterback a time?

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Good play on the back end, I guess opportunistic. I mean,
this pass rush does leave a lot to be desired,
and it has gotten like marginally better. It's not good, though,
Like we're not going to sugarcoat it. Montes Weet's not
He's playing better, but he's not playing at the level
of which you need your star defensive end who makes
twenty four and a half million dollars the playout. That's
just the facts. I think that the coverage aspect here

(08:37):
with a very banged up secondary, has had some really
good moments this year. Nay Sean Wright, who I know
the Viking Vikings fans might remember him from like a
very brief stint in Minnesota. I think he's really come
into his own because he was battling for a number
two spot all training camp and just so happens now
he's a starter because Dalen Johnson's out in definitely, and

(09:00):
I think that they've had some really good moments in
games where they were able to kind of sack some
of those interceptions up. Kevin Byrd had two, I believe
it was against the Saints. He also had one against
the He's like leading the league right now or leading
the team with four. But you know, there's been some
good moments. I think with what Dennis Allen has been
able to do with the secondary and scheming around.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
Some issues.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
Too, Like I think that's been pretty helpful for them
in the takeaways department, where you've got Spencer Rattler in
Week seven who you could throw the book at, and
it wasn't that difficult to get him rattled. Other quarterbacks
a little bit more difficult to do. But you know,
I think in the situation where Joe Flacco threw that
pick at the end of the game and just kind

(09:44):
of like how that whole thing came to be. Obviously
it was wiped off as a pick six because of
the penalty, but there's you know, the pass rush has
to come alive more in Chicago, and that's something that
they've been working at for weeks. They didn't make a
big swing at the deadline because they really don't have
the draft capital they're willing to part with next year
to do so. But the stop gap option that they
have after Dio Dangbo, their starting defensive end, went out,

(10:06):
is hoping that Austin Booker, your fit around pick from
a year ago, can can be a solid replacement for him,
that you can actually get some pressure up front. But
they do blitz a lot, like that's the thing that
like I think you watched for on Sunday. This is
a team that had gotten very creative with using the
nickel blitz and relying on you know, their weak side
linebackers to you know, get after the quarterback too.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
Who needs to give up massive assets for Trey Hendrickson
When you get CJ. Gardner Johnson off the street, I mean,
are you kidding me?

Speaker 5 (10:35):
With that?

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Three sacks in two games. I mean it's all blitzing right.

Speaker 3 (10:40):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, And I think he knows this defense.
He was drafted into this defense in New Orleans. I
mean he also got himself traded out of this defense.
It's a very boomer bus proposition. We know what CJ.
Gardner Johnson's history is in the NFL. He's been on
fourteen since the end of last season. It's it's clear
that you know, he's a guy who can be great

(11:00):
for you, but maybe not not for long sort of capacity.
Right now, it's working though for the Bears, and I
think that that's something that they're going to ride because
he broke the game open for them in the third quarter.
It was not looking great. The offense is having a
hard time sustaining drives and then Caleb taps into his
legs once he gets back on the field. That doesn't
happen though. If they don't get that turnover that Gardner Johnson,

(11:23):
you know, the situation where he gets the second sack
of the game, they pin them deep. That doesn't happen
if he doesn't have that play.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
All right.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
Lastly, we're going to get deeply into your heart here
the IU grad and Courtney Cronim your Hoosiers have Wisconsin
and Purdue left. They're going to go twelve and zero
in your lifetime. Did you ever think this could happen,
given it's Hoosier football?

Speaker 3 (11:47):
No, of course not. I'd be lying to you to
say that I thought it'd be anything other than a
one year wonder from last year. But when we knew
how we knew how good they were against Illinois, and
that to me was the time where I'm like, no,
this is this team's for real. Did I think they'd
go undefeated? No, But Frianda Mendoza is a better quarterback

(12:09):
than Curtis Rourke, and Curtis Rourke was an excellent college
quarterback for the Hoosiers. I'm thrilled. I'm sure that Barrero
feels the same way. I would love to get his
pulse on all of this too, because we've been sweating
out some games. I mean that Iowa game was tied
and they ended up winning and it was close. That
Oregon game was a nail bier two and Franda Mendoza

(12:31):
threw a pick six and they were able to recover
from that on the road the Penn State game and
the throw of the year catch of the year combo
between him and Omar Cooper is something that I never
thought would happen, and it's very cool as an alum
to get to live through this season.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
But Barrero calls the Omar Cooper game winning catch last
game the greatest he's ever seen. He's older than both
of us. Is it the greatest catch that you've ever seen?

Speaker 3 (12:57):
Hard to say it's not. I mean, you love the
one total one foot rule in college football for that
very reason. And I know people gave Gus Johnson a
lot of flak for his touchdown call and losing his voice,
but I think that that perfectly encapsulated the moment of
the absurdity of that play, the probability of it working

(13:17):
and happening. He's getting drilled as he's throwing the ball
by two defenders. They're in the red zone. He just
they get the ball back, get under like a minute
to go. When he goes eighty seven yards down the
field and then ends with that on a day where
his number one receivers out due to injury, we find
that out like thirty minutes before kickoffs. That was I mean,
that's just stuff. Was like legend and he's I don't

(13:40):
I know that we have a couple more games to play.
I get it. The Heisman Trophy is going to Bloomington
this year. You cannot tell me otherwise.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
The best.

Speaker 1 (13:48):
I'll look forward to seeing you this weekend, especially Sunday.

Closed on by Tucurella, so he played at the Dickensims.
Corello ended up in a heat Sharks fired alone, Celebrady
with ramging front it back with celebrity Drew on that
way and they score. Colin Grafts stick handle past Gustison,
talk Tooba backhander, and the Sharks first the second time
in the season, series, winning overtime at Grand Casino Arena.

Speaker 1 (14:49):
Russo Radio at Russo Hockey via X, Michael Russo covers
the rights about the Minnesota Wild, the rivalry series, the
Stanley Top. He follows tramp trampled by Turtles, uh to
Red Rock Shows and Morrison Colorado and writes about that
and he joins us Now, Michael, good morning, it was

(15:11):
an OT loss to the Sharks, as a Joe, just
shared second OT lost to a team in the Wild
basically beat every time since the pandemic.

Speaker 2 (15:20):
Uh, what did you think of the game last night?
And good morning?

Speaker 4 (15:24):
Well, I mean they just couldn't score, you know, And
you know, when you actually look at the analytics, I
think it's really easy to see why there are guys
that aren't necessarily pure goal scorers. Were the ones that
were driving the bus yesterday. Their their third and fourth lines,
and those guys, you know, I mean, they leave a
lot of pucks on the ice. We've seen it all

(15:45):
season long, and last night the Rossie line just got
cratered and and that's really been the case the last
couple of games. So you know, those are the guys
who grow pristav Rossi that are the pure scorers, second line,
probably lest some some goals on the ice bowld the
obviously scored is the power play goal. But even strength,
they've been you know, really you know, they've been coming

(16:06):
along here in recent weeks, but they have been, you know,
really mediocre in that area and expected goals this year
are are really been a you know, an area where
they they've really struggled. And so I just think that
it's a disappointing loss and it's a time where they
can't afford to continually give extra points to their opponents.
I mean, these teams are going to be you know,

(16:28):
we saw it last year where the Wild made the
playoffs on a miracle and won and made the playoffs
on a tie breaker, and to blow as many games
as they had this year they've lost. They're one in
four and actual overtimes in five of their six games
that have gone past regulation they've blown leads in and

(16:49):
four of those six are against Western Conference opponents. And
it's just it's for a team that has you know
a lot of really good players that should be much
better in overtime. It's it's concerning to me that the
last couple of years they haven't been a great overtime team.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
In in regulation for the loan goal, the power play piece, uh,
the the Zuparello patients play then passed a Baldy for
that power play goal.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
I mean that that that was just fantastic, wasn't it.

Speaker 4 (17:17):
Yeah, he teed it up on a platter, and that's
what Zukarella does and we saw him, you know, do
the same thing in his first game in New York.
And I think he'll get better as the game as
as you know, he gets more into the line I
mean to to come into the you know, at his age,
to come into the lineup a month and a half
into the season after not having a training camp, it
obviously is takes time to catch up. And I think

(17:37):
he's going to do that more and more.

Speaker 5 (17:39):
You know.

Speaker 4 (17:39):
I know that he felt like, just judging by you know,
the replays yesterday, he felt that he deserved to get
a penalty or you know, draw a penalty in overtime,
but the puck was taken away from him and next thing,
you know they lost, but he's got this this ability
to just make incredible scene passes and and when he
puts the puck in areas like that, especially on given goes.

(18:02):
You know, the odds of you score a goal if
you hit the net are really good because you're getting
the goalie to slide side to side, and we saw
that there with the Boldie goal.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
So with the with the Colin Graft game winner.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
We heard coach Hines after the game said, quote, doesn't
really matter what I think about the play end quote
by the way, hinse joins nine to noon tomorrow, nine
to twenty. And to my untrained die, it looked like
Zuki was slow to get back and didn't fluster wrapping up.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
Is that a fair assessment?

Speaker 4 (18:29):
Yeah, I have to look at it closer. I didn't
think it was a penalty. I think he was knocked
off the pocket. Okay, you know, if there was any
penalty in there, I think that. You know, if there
was any penalty, there was probably the brodein behind the
net at one point that they let go, and that
one I think was frustrating. Maybe that's also what the

(18:49):
wild were upset about at the end of the game.
But I think that, you know, I think John realizes
that you're not getting a call there, and you're right,
I mean Zuki was slow to get back. I think
that Brodein got caught in between. He challenges Celebrini there.
You know, Celebrini is going to win that race to
the park and he's just going to chip it into
open space, kind of like Ericson acted for the caprice
of empty Nekel the game before against Calgary. He's going

(19:11):
to chip it into open space and Graft is going
to get a breakaway there and whether he converts or
he converts, but that's a tough play for Brodein and
what you need is somebody coming hard back. And obviously
he didn't. He didn't catch up there. And Celebrini, I mean,
that's what he does so special, right, I mean, he
didn't have a shot in the game, and yet he
sets up two goals with you know, perfect plays. And

(19:33):
we saw the game before that a couple of weeks
ago the same thing. He's not on the ice for
all of overtime, comes on for seven seconds and wins
the game. So he's going to be a special player
and somebody the wild they're gonna have to compete against
for eons.

Speaker 1 (19:46):
Maclen Celebrini doesn't turn twenty until June. So how close
is he to being considered top ten stock in the league.

Speaker 4 (19:56):
Well, I think he's there now. I think he's going
to be on the Olympic team for Canada. He's leading
league in points. He's just a special, special player. This
is somebody that and we are seeing a changing of
the guard in the NHL. And you look at the
top of the scoring right now, and you have guys
like Leo Carlson, who the Wild are going to see
Saturday night. You have Connor Bodard who's had a magnificent
start to the season for Chicago, who's been one of

(20:17):
the biggest surprises in the league. And then you have Maclin.
But Maclin, you know, I sat down with a player,
you know, a captain in Milan there for the NHL
Media Tour, and this is a captain in the league,
and he said told me that he's a crossbreed between
Patrice Bergeron and Sydney Crosby. And you see it all
the time with him. He's got this inate ability to

(20:37):
one win draws, but he just competes like few other
kids in the league. I remember being so impressed with
him last year. There was a play in San Jose
where he goes into the corner with Marcus Felino and
comes out with the puck. And not a lot of
eighteen year olds would have the bravery and the courage
to go into a corner with a guy like Felino
and then come out with the puck. You can see
the respect that everybody in this league had for him.

(21:00):
And and again I did that media that that NHL
player poll, both in the Milan media tour that I
covered and the Vegas one. It was an anonymous one
and he absolutely lapped the competition as the next face
in the National Hockey League. And so he's just a special,
special player in San Jose. That's that was the They
certainly got the benefit of getting him and being one

(21:21):
of the worst teams in the league a couple of
years ago to be able to draft him.

Speaker 2 (21:24):
Russo Radio.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
So with the Wild they've lost six of the last
eight Bus starts.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
Gus Bus, What what do you think of that?

Speaker 4 (21:35):
Yeah, I mean last night, I don't blame him for
really anything, but you're right, I mean he has not
been nearly as good the team hasn't been great in
front of him, but but he's got to stop punks
and there have been you know, there was there was
a stretch of games there of eight or nine games
where the Wild had the second best goalie on the
ice for all about one of them, and so he's
got to be better. Valstat you know, he's coming off

(21:55):
a couple of really good starts in a row, including
a shoutout against Calgary obviously was really good on Long Island,
and the Wild have gotten points at least in all
five of his starts. It doesn't mean that he's been
great really up until the first three games. He wasn't
very good. The last game against San Jose, he was
definitely the second best goalie on the on the ice
and gave up six that game. But you know, we're

(22:17):
coming to that point now where the Wild are going.
They definitely need Gustison to play better because they're gonna,
you know, otherwise it's going to start to give them
pause and they're going to start playing fallstat more. I
don't necessarily think that's a bad thing, but they need
better goaltending without a doubt from gustuson.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
Hey, Michael, let me get outside of the Covenant. For
a second look at looking at X and at Russo
Hockey and your bio at States X Isles, die Hard
Isles being the Islanders.

Speaker 2 (22:43):
Well, what was that when when you were that die Hard?

Speaker 1 (22:45):
Was that during the Trodier Pot band Bossy days with
Billy Smith between the pipes?

Speaker 4 (22:51):
Yep, it was. And you know, I was really young
at that time. I was what six, seven, eight and
nine when they won their their cups, But it obviously
had a huge impression on my life. I was a
massive Islanders fan. I used to go to this day
camp actually and sort of preschool that bordered in Woodbury,
New York that bordered essentially this community where all the

(23:15):
Islanders lived, and my friends and I used to actually
sneak out of our camp and just watch them come
home from training camp and things like that. And so
it's you know, that definitely was the impression that that
probably got me to be a hockey writer. The other
thing I remember is when I used to you know,
back and then I remember having a Pathmark shopping cart

(23:36):
and I used to deliver news days at age like
twelve years old and come from school and they'd be
on my driveway and I'd read all the Islanders coverage,
and you know, you look back now and you wonder
if that's kind of what really also ingrained itself into me.
So you know, but I say X diehard too, because
you know, I started I was sports writers starting at
age like fourteen fifteen. I really grew up not being

(23:58):
a fan of anything. You you lose your fandom when
you're a sports writer. So I am truly not a
fan of really any team in any sport. Yeah, I
haven't been. And sometimes I think that really works out
in my favor because I look at some sometimes the
fanaticism that I see on Twitter with people just being
so upset at their teams, and I'm like, I've never
experienced that, you know, so now, like to me, it's

(24:19):
actually a benefit, Like I could watch the World Series
and be super happy no matter if the Blue Jays
win or the Dodgers win, but other people are just
losing their minds, and so you know, I've just never
I just I just lost all of that. I grew
up a diehard Expos fan, and really, you know, obviously
they moved to Washington, but you know, I became a
sports writer and it just kind of lost that fandom,
So it is bizarre that I really don't. I'm not

(24:41):
a fan of any team.

Speaker 1 (24:42):
Does does Radio Joe ever become insufferable with his Eagles?

Speaker 4 (24:49):
No, I wouldn't say insufferable. He actually keeps it really tame,
at least around me.

Speaker 2 (24:53):
He's a pro.

Speaker 4 (24:55):
But we know, I know the last year.

Speaker 1 (24:58):
Now.

Speaker 4 (24:58):
The one thing I will say is I say nice
things about the Giants and Mets of times because my
brother is a diehard Giants and Mets fan. And at
one point last season or two seasons, Joe O'Donnell came
up to me with this just this like angry looking face,
and he looks at me, he goes, are you a
Giants fan? And that was the first time where I
saw like like he like legit was like offended that

(25:21):
I was like tweeting nice things about about one of
the Eagle's biggest rivals.

Speaker 1 (25:25):
Uh it it seemed it seemed like reading the stories
of the Athletic and the Athletic Dot Com. Uh it
seemed like you really enjoyed Cleveland and Buffalo and the
rivalry series.

Speaker 4 (25:37):
I absolutely did you know. I went in there. I
went in there with trepidation, like I I you know,
I really like, I'll be honest, I get tunnel vision.
I just cover the National Hockey League, and I you know,
even it's it's sad, you know, with the frost year,
I just don't pay as much attention other than saying
hi to the players because they they their their locker
room is literally right next to the ice at tree

(25:57):
or rink, and so that's really.

Speaker 1 (25:59):
What I know.

Speaker 4 (26:00):
And and so I went in really nervous, uh And
and this was why it was such a good idea
for me to cover both these games and the two
games in Edmonton next month, because I don't want to
just go to the Olympics and and basically wright just
game stories that with no substance. I want to know
everything about the players and the athletes that I'm covering.

(26:20):
And so it was really great to get to know them.
I felt like a scout in a lot of ways.
And you know, some of these some of these girls
are just unbelievable hockey players. You look at Abby Murphy
and Taylor Heizi and Layla Edwards and and this this
Caroline Harvey that plays at Wisconsin is just like she's
as good as skater as I've ever seen. In my life.
Hillary Knight obviously we all know. So I had. I

(26:43):
had a blast. I felt like I learned a lot.
It was fun writing the stories with Haley Salvianan, who
I essentially shadowed, are women's hockey writer at the Athletic.
And so I'm really looking forward actually next month. And
so I did. I had a blast. Plus it was
really my first time spending any time in Cleveland and
what a great at an incredible meal at this restaurant
called the Marble Room. I went to the Rock and

(27:03):
Roll Hall of Fame and uh, you know, and also
their coach John Rablueski, I've gotten to know really well
over the years just because he's coached. He has his
fingerprints both on the men and women's Olympic teams because
he coached so many the guys in the Ann Arbor
program for a while. He actually got to start working
for John Hines's staff for the national team program. And

(27:24):
you know, coach the Hughes brothers and Matt Boldie and
and and the Chuck brothers and players like that. So
you know, I'm really looking forward actually in Edmonton next
down sitting down with him next month, and sitting down
with him and doing a Q and A with him,
but also doing a big feature on him because he's
he's a fascinating coach.

Speaker 1 (27:43):
What what'd you think of Taylor Hesie's game? What impresses?

Speaker 4 (27:49):
I mean, she's just unreal. First of all, she's got wheels,
she's got incredible vision. She she could create empty net
goals essentially with her scene passes. But she also has
a shot that you have to respect. And we saw
that play that she made for scammer Or in her
hometown and Buffalo, just a selfless, selfless act by Taylor.
She fakes the shot and drops it to the home,

(28:10):
to the to the you know, western New York native
for a goal in front of all her family and
friends and girls that she coaches and all that stuff.
So so she's also a selfless player. So we know that,
I mean we've seen her obviously at the U and
and and we know that that, uh, you know with
the Frost that she's an absolute superstar. But seeing her
on the international stage in person, I think she is

(28:31):
going to have an unbelievable Olympics. And the other girl
that I just I was incredibly impressed with is Abby Murphy.
Like you know, you look at her and you think
of her as almost like a Brad mar shand Matthew
could Chuck type because she has she does a lot
of antics on the ice to really, you know, get
under the skin of opponents. But my god, do you
have to respect her speed or shot? She's got an
elite shot, and uh, she's just she really is like

(28:55):
a Matthew could Chuck or a bradburg Marchand because she's
a complete player, she's just not a you know, quote
unquote shift disturber. You know, she is somebody that is
a superstar as well. So you know, it's gonna be
really interesting in the PWHL draft coming up next year,
and just who goes number one overall because as much
as every coach finds Abby Murphy to be a thorn

(29:17):
on the side, I think she is going to be
a top top draft pick.

Speaker 2 (29:20):
Dude. Last one.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
Do you find these USA ladies night and day better
than their Canadian counterparts?

Speaker 4 (29:29):
You know, it's hard to say that. Certainly there they
were like like, you know, I left there and I
remember saying to people like, how does this team not
win gold at the Olympics. But the one thing I'm
trying to remember too, is we're talking one apparently historically
at these rivalry series, you know, the Canadians get off
to really tough starts. They did leave you know, two

(29:49):
or three of their top players at home, so they
weren't part of this rivalry series and they should be
in Edmonton. But I look at the talent that they have.
I mean, you look at the two power play is
that the United States have. I mean their number two
unit technically has Icy on it and Murphy on it,
and then they have go with this all veteran number
one unit and so like talk about a luxury of

(30:10):
riches on the power play. So I personally like after
watching those two games and seeing you know, obviously the
second game, even though it was a six to one outcome,
that was a one goal game going into the third period,
but the way that they I thought the United States
dominated Canada in both games. I definitely think that they're
the favorite going into Milan. But I'm also well understandingstanding

(30:31):
that they left some girls at home, but these are
the pooling on the ice, and Pooling is allegedly the
best you know, women's hockey player out there right now.
But I think, you know, people like Abby Murphy and
Taylor Heiseie have something to say about that as well.

Speaker 2 (30:45):
I appreciate you. My brother talks, so yeah, see take care,
see you by Brusso Radio.

Speaker 6 (30:58):
News De Nord Brought to you by the Casino at
Canterbury Parkcanterburypark dot com. Feeling the felt all year long
and of course that means poker, blackjack and table games
and having SIPs at chips and I mentioned and I'll
mention it again tomorrow. The NFL Pro Pick Them Challenge
is cool because on Thursdays at Canterbury you just walk

(31:18):
in there. Hopefully you run it up on the blackjack table,
but you can pick the winners of the NFL Weekend
each week at Canterbury. They've got a machine for it
and there's weekly winners and then at the end of
the year somebody's gonna win free fuel for a year
thanks to Quick Trip.

Speaker 2 (31:32):
But they're also doing this.

Speaker 6 (31:34):
You've heard Pa doing those spots for the ten K giveaway,
the Black Friday Weekend, which will be the twenty eight,
twenty ninth, and thirtieth ten K giveaway. It's super cool
at Canterbury. But they're going to have a track side
Christmas tree lot. We're starting at nine am on Black Friday,
and go up and pick the Christmas tree. So family, truckster, mother, father,

(31:54):
sons and daughters, everybody pile in, go down to Shakapee,
grab the tree, or maybe go and play some cards
and then grab the tree.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
It's up to you. But Black Friday.

Speaker 6 (32:03):
Check it out Kenterbury Park dot com beautiful for all
the event details. The Minnesota Timberwolves PA are off until
they're on the chill until Friday. I believe they're hosting Sacramento. Yeah,
and Friday night. The Wolves already handled Sacramento out west.

Speaker 2 (32:18):
You dig that?

Speaker 6 (32:19):
No Kings, Indeed, they're three and eight in their ratty.
And I'm seeing rumors courtesy of NBA Central and those
that follow the Sacramento Kings rumors of a firesale rebuild
PA that includes Zach Levine, that includes DeMar derozen O
like that name. It also includes Parker Fox's favorite player,

(32:42):
demonte Sabonis.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
If it includes Malik Monk, I'm in how good would
that be?

Speaker 4 (32:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (32:48):
Like Monk off the bench, A lot of teams could
use Malik Monk. I think the Wolves really good and
I think the Wolves are one of them.

Speaker 6 (32:54):
It's interesting though, just ten to eleven games in the year,
whether it was Nico Harrison being hired as general manager
how about that, by the way, And I don't remember
if was he GM because at one point, as we're
watching Luca wearing a different kind of purple and gold
west for the Lakers, at one point they had a

(33:14):
very young Luca and a Jalen Brunson, oh wow, on
the same team, if.

Speaker 2 (33:20):
You have to remember that.

Speaker 6 (33:21):
And at one point they decided not to pay him.
I don't know what the circumstances around that were. I
think it was like it was like a four year
let's call it, like an eighty ninety ish kind of
you know, just like a Jaden McDaniels type extension, and
they said no. And now Jalen Brunson is making memories
for the Knicks. They're waiting for Kyrie Irving to return

(33:42):
from the knee, and now rumors are insisting that Anthony
Davis is potentially available.

Speaker 2 (33:49):
So we're just eleven games in the thunder Never Lose.

Speaker 6 (33:53):
It appears the GM in Dallas finally sadly having to
own up for one of the tough for trades, combined
with a tough start for the MAVs and the three.

Speaker 2 (34:03):
Warriors got beat so badly last night.

Speaker 1 (34:05):
After the game, Raymond Green said that we have people
on the team who are not giving full effort.

Speaker 2 (34:10):
So, I mean, that got nasty last night and we're
less than a month into the season.

Speaker 6 (34:14):
Pa, It's crazy how quickly things can change in this
particular game in the association. When you try to play
fantasy hoops the best you can and you picture big
threes or at least dynamic duos, you put rosters together
and people are looking at Okay, see like, yeah, we
don't got it. I guess we're just going to rebuild
the entire organization. Yea, Dallas and Sacramento in turmoil right now.

Speaker 1 (34:37):
Well with Nico Harrison, the general manager for the MAVs
former general manager, just think about the last within a
year contextually whatever the months are, eight, nine, ten to eleven. Yeah,
since the Luca move from the move, So what has
he had to endure? Well, it starts where it got

(35:02):
so loud, so gnarly, so mean and so nasty. He
couldn't even sit in his seat at Mavericks home games. Okay,
they had to move him and put him in a swite.

Speaker 6 (35:13):
From a human perspective, have you ever seen on social
and I mean it's kind of sad where he's kind
of like peeking his head out of the tunnel in
the arena.

Speaker 2 (35:23):
He can't even go out there. It was the off season.

Speaker 1 (35:26):
He was in Miami, maybe with his wife, but he
was in Miami at a restaurant, and two MAVs fans
not even wearing game warn Michael Finley's it's an open
air Miami bit that you can find everywhere. Oh yeah,
cussed at him in Miami. Caught a stray in the
off season. Come on, Okay, so it was bad. So

(35:48):
now you start the season with him and what a
MAVs fans and Nico Harrison have to watch Luca in
shape and he's gonna stay in shape all year and
he's probably gonna win the he might win the MVP.

Speaker 2 (36:03):
He might, So that's what they have to see. What happened.
He's skinny, and he's staying skinny, and he's.

Speaker 1 (36:09):
Spry, and I'm getting cuss dat outside of the Clevelander
and I can't even sit in my seat at home
games and I gotta move.

Speaker 2 (36:17):
What happens in the Cleveland hey charge, so that I
mean that too.

Speaker 1 (36:22):
Whom much is give him much as expected? And and
he swung, he swung and and apparently he missed. Okay,
I'm not I can't completely say he missed until I
see what Cooper flag does. I get Kyrie irving out there.

Speaker 2 (36:37):
But that's the that's the roller coaster is.

Speaker 1 (36:39):
They can't have their general manager at home games getting
cuss dats.

Speaker 3 (36:43):
No, they can't.

Speaker 6 (36:44):
It's it's not it's that that's that's not acceptable. It
just wouldn't work. There was also some bit I think
like a longtime season ticket holder. Uh, they have like
third row seats behind the owner owner. I think it's
Dumont or something.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
I guess. The kid like flipped him off off.

Speaker 6 (37:00):
So then his dad got in touch and he's like, you,
you're never going to another MAVs game until you apologize
to the owner. So there's actually I can't hear any
more of this. There's actually a video on social of
the kid. I can't hear any more of this wearing
a Luca jersey, sitting down court side like pregame talking
to the owner.

Speaker 2 (37:19):
It's insane. But they got the first pick.

Speaker 6 (37:22):
That was and you remember the fixes in moment, kind
of like somebody's throwing some money to Deloitte and two
share because there's no chance the MAVs after trading Luca
would get the first pick. They get it, they get
flag and the thing is still as tough to go
as it is. I mean, wow, what a melodrama on
Big d Yeah, this in no way is too as
the bonus might be available.

Speaker 1 (37:42):
Out West, myself or Nordo sound perfect in our worlds.
Only one in the history of the world is perfect,
and it's not us. Yes, So we're looking and I'm
looking at it like this. Why I said I can't
hear this is when it comes to when it comes
to large scale humanity. There's this text machine over there

(38:04):
called the six four six eight six, right, Some of
it you look at and you're like, this isn't a
bit wow. There actually are minds and hearts that get
to this conclusion. Yes, and then you attempt to go
to church, you attempt to go to Burnsville, you attempt
to go to Egan or whatever, and you hit that

(38:25):
zipper merge, which is gone.

Speaker 2 (38:27):
The zipper merge is gone. Thank you father.

Speaker 1 (38:30):
You hit that zipper merge. On thirteen thirty five South,
then thirty five North leaks into it, and that's a humanity.

Speaker 2 (38:39):
Check right there. It is just with the you know,
just what people feel is theirs.

Speaker 1 (38:44):
And why so closing your eyes while you drive a
zipper Merge is not preferred. But nevertheless, I can't say
it hasn't happened. And then you just hear everything you
just heard about Mavericks fans. I'm just not being able
to restrain themselves enough. Honestly, there is nothing you can

(39:06):
do to my favorite pro sports team, my favorite distraction.
Whatever it is that's gonna cause me or Nordo to
walk downstairs seven rows from the court and tell the
general manager to have off. There is I mean, there's
nothing that can happen that's trying to trigger that. It

(39:28):
happens a lot.

Speaker 2 (39:29):
It does.

Speaker 1 (39:30):
Why because in twenty twenty five, dogs set their dogs
up with the with the camera rolling in a place
nobody sees it, that's right. So it's staged, and they
know it's gonna get to social media, and they know
it's gonna it's gonna do the viral bit. They want
some and that's their lives. That's so it's just a
little bit of a humanity check there.

Speaker 2 (39:51):
Thank you? I mean yeah, I mean I you say never,
I'm with you, yes never.

Speaker 6 (39:56):
On wise, at forty years old, there there is truly
nothing that my favorite team could do to compel me
to do such things. But there's a part of twenty
two year old Nordo where if like Anthony Edwards goes
it like matist Thaibol comes back like that.

Speaker 1 (40:11):
Well, now you're making me think about when I went
to games at a young age. Like the craziest thing
I did well I ran on the court when Michael
Jordan won his first NBA championship at the Fabulous Forum. Yeah,
but that's totally valid. And I wasn't a Lakers fan.
I was a Celtics fan. And and somebody tied into
horse owner and actor Dick Van Patten had one extra seat.

(40:35):
They gave it to me when I was working at
Hollywood Park. So I went, not a Lakers fan, not
a Bulls fan, high five to Horace Grant, tried to
get to MJ couldn't get to him. So that was rubelik,
But it wasn't not out there, you know, telling telling
Scottie Pippeney looks like Joe cammill or like you're nothing
without Jordan. So I just I don't envision there's anything

(40:56):
that possibly could happen, you know what I mean?

Speaker 6 (40:59):
Well, now you got me. I mean the old Joe Cammell.
He does kind of look like him, doesn't he? Hang
on here, let's move on. News Denard brought to you
by Canterbury. What else do I got for you? We
hit on the Wild with Russo last segment. Come on, step,
I'm sorry I lost, I lost my train of thought. No,
that's fine, Noon to three on it. I was looking

(41:20):
at this unreal geez, holy cow, the uh this this reason.
I'm not compensated at all by unreal. So everything I
buy for myself or my family for Christmas and stuff
is all straight from the Allen Coffer. But this newest,
this newest Vikings dropped thing, this thing is badass. Holy cow,
that happened this morning, I think. So it's sweet.

Speaker 2 (41:41):
Yeah, it's like drop three. It's a it's a hoodie
that is just an illuminating purple logo. It's just really cool. Anyway. No,
it's fine. I mean, you're you're looking at unreal.

Speaker 6 (41:52):
I'm looking at Scottie Pippen and Joe Cammel pictures side
by side.

Speaker 1 (41:55):
You're looking at me, who's trying to both to trying
to get us both onreal comps.

Speaker 6 (41:59):
Here is correct this new thing, so that so that
the con can get a sweatshirt wild Please beat the Sharks,
you o t it's ridiculous. Next up the Ducks get
a win. Please, That's all I ask. Brian Dable fired
from the Giants.

Speaker 2 (42:14):
We know that news.

Speaker 6 (42:15):
Jamis Winston starting for the Giants versus the Pack on Sunday.
Please throw it to your team more than the other.

Speaker 2 (42:21):
Team, Jamis. I saw this as Sante Samuel.

Speaker 6 (42:25):
He had that workout last week and he was asked
about Brian Flores was asked about a Sante Samuel junior,
the final fusion surgery and such, but he had to
work out there.

Speaker 2 (42:35):
What do you think of your cornerback, dep.

Speaker 4 (42:38):
I mean I feel good.

Speaker 7 (42:39):
I think you know you know Murph Zay. I think
Fabians you will come up and played well. I've had
the injury to Okudah, but I think overall you know
that that group's no no playing well. I have certainly
some plays that you know, not just for that group

(42:59):
of for really everyone. You know we can improve on
and the places we wish we had back. But I
think overall, you know, they've they've been solidly across the board,
but you know all always trying to get better each
one of those guys.

Speaker 4 (43:14):
So I'm not like our group.

Speaker 2 (43:16):
I gotta be honest, mister Flores.

Speaker 6 (43:17):
He didn't inspire a ton of confidence in me as
you answered that question, but I appreciate the sentiment and
the spirit of it the reason I played that audio.
He feels confident about the cornerback depth. Sante Samuel Junior
has signed with the Steelers practice squad. So for those
wondering what's up with the Sante Samuel, he has decided
to join the folks in Pittsburgh and won't be an

(43:38):
option any longer.

Speaker 2 (43:39):
To the Purple, what's up with the Chicago Bears?

Speaker 1 (43:49):
Their Their coach Ben Johnson triggered Yours Truly and nine
to Noon to employ Lavelle Neil the Third, the resident
Bears fan for some beating the around the corner off
a quote he recently had about matchup number two against
the Minnesota Vikings, and the head coach.

Speaker 2 (44:08):
Said this, and I will have my vengeance in this
life for the next Beating dub AARs is next.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
