Nutrition significantly impacts COVID-19 risk and severity. A study of 593,000 adults showed eating more fruits, vegetables, and legumes reduced COVID-19 risk by 9% and severe COVID by 41%. While no specific diet prevents COVID-19, healthy eating is crucial. Focus on fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, whole grains, lean animal proteins, and water. Minimize processed foods.

For eating out, vaccination and boosting are key. Check local case counts and hospitalizations. Consider outdoor seating, less crowded times, or takeout, especially if high-risk.

For breastfeeding mothers with COVID-19, vaccination is paramount. When isolating with a newborn, wash hands, wear a mask within 6 feet of the baby, keep distance, and consider pumping breast milk for a healthy caregiver to feed.

No nutritional supplement is definitively proven to prevent or decrease COVID-19 severity. A healthy diet prevents deficiencies. The immune system needs vitamins C, D, and zinc. Vitamin D production from sun exposure is often insufficient in winter. Consult a healthcare provider for nutrient levels or supplements.

Hydration and nutrition are vital for COVID-19 recovery. Even without thirst or hunger, continue to eat and drink to support your immune system. Dehydration thickens respiratory secretions, increasing pneumonia risk. Drink small amounts every half hour. Water and unsweetened beverages are best; avoid sugary, alcoholic, and caffeinated drinks.
