It was supposed to be simple: the party ends, everyone grabs a cab, and he crashes on the floor of the empty master bedroom. Winter light from the snow outside spilled in through bare windows. No furniture. No TV. No sounds… until a cough broke the silence. Then came the footsteps—starting in the basement, moving across the main floor, pacing like someone who knew the layout by heart. Step by step, they climbed the stairs and stomped straight toward his room, stopping just outside the door.
Frozen on the mattress on the floor, he watched a tall, hooded shadow rise up the wall, as if something was standing in the hall… or right inside with him. When he finally found the courage to move, there was no one at the window, no one in the house—and a friend at the front door too scared to come back inside.
He went in alone. He didn’t leave that way.
