Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Hello and welcome to The Herd. It's me Jason McIntyre
in for Colin Cowhard. He's on vacation, Ladies and gentlemen,
who knows when he'll be back. I'm joined though, fortunately
by Alex Curry. We are here to chop it up
late August. Alex, And what color is it? Is it
a lime green? You know what?

Speaker 2 (00:47):
J Mac.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
Sometimes I just like to feel happy with what I'm
wearing and this is full, like happy as my vibee.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
So were you look at you? Yeah? This is flashy
U trying to match the tone of the show I
found about to Disneyland this week? How was that?

Speaker 5 (01:02):
Dude?

Speaker 4 (01:03):
Okay, I gotta say this was like a spoiled experience.
It was my first time doing like the VIP.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Oh no, no, no no.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
I went with a friend, but like you get walked
to the front of every single line. So in eight hours,
we did every single ride at California Adventure and Disneyland
in ninety five degree.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
You're basically like coward, one of these bougie co soal elites.
I'm just rich and famous people. Uh oh boy, now
I'm just fun. I do want to do it was right,
all right. So we got a lot to talk about today,
some great guests, but I do want to start with
a guy near or dear to my heart, and that's
Lamar Jackson. Folks, I love me some Lamar Jackson. If
you guys ever played Fantasy, you grab Lamar, it's lights out.

(01:43):
You're gonna win the season. But I want to start
with Lamar because it's something that happened to him this week,
and I'm a problem solver. I like to help. It's
kind of a downfall of mine. You know, the wife
will be like, man, I can't believe this happened, and
I want to solve the problem. But you're not supposed
to try to solve it. You're supposed to just listen.
But I have some advice for Lamar. You can't fix

(02:05):
which you can't face, and you guys know the old
media model.

Speaker 6 (02:09):
Right.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
It used to be that after the game, the players
and the coaches they go to the podium and they
meet the media, and then the media goes back and
assembles their story, puts it in the newspaper. They're the gatekeepers. Okay,
the Internet and social media kind of changed that, right,
So now players they can go to the podium and
kind of bob and weave and duck the tough questions
and ham and hall. Then they go to their social

(02:31):
media and they can totally change the narrative. They can
shape it however they want. Right, So, I don't know,
you have another stinky playoff game, right as Lamar Jackson
did back in January, and you can just watch that away,
eh whatever. Hey here, I am working out. I lost
fifteen pounds in the off season, you know, and I'm
doing all this fun stuff. But the reality is Lamar
Jackson's got a big problem on his hands and he's

(02:53):
got to face that. And the new model of Hey,
I can just control the narrative on social media, or
I can go my Buddies podcast a former player and
they're gonna toss to me a bunch of softballs. And again,
I'm changing the narrative. Folks, we are what eight months
removed from Lamar Jackson totally pooping his pants on national
television against the Chiefs in a massive letdown again. And

(03:16):
now Lamar went on the radio this week and he
was asked about playoff criticism. It was a bit of
a softball. Here's his response.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
I really don't care what the criticism or you know,
what the critics say, because at the end of the day,
you know, I just came off of a seat in
the injury the year before and we made all the
way to the ALC in the new system, you know,
So there's nothing to be down in myself, my teammates
or anything like that, you know, because we made it
far and further than the year than we've been you know,
we haven't been to the FC in a long time.

Speaker 6 (03:44):
So we started off. Well, we're getting.

Speaker 5 (03:47):
Closer, I'll say that. You know, we got to keep
going and you know, guys will we will be there,
you know, because that's our go you know, we criticized
the criticized ourselves more than anyone else. So what people
sit on the outside, that's just their takes, you know.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Yeah, Okay, a lot of words, salad and Lamar. I
get it, And then you move on to the next question.
You know, look at the numbers, folks. Lamar, by the way,
has the highest winning percentage of any quarterback in NFL
history to never win a Super Bowl. He mean, he
hasn't got to the Super Bowl yet. Look at these numbers.
He falls off a cliff in the playoffs. And I know,
winning in the postseason is hard. A great producer Ryan

(04:23):
provided me. Hey, Jay, I know, Lamar is only two
and four. Peyton Manning also started his postseason career two
and four. I get it.

Speaker 7 (04:30):
It's hard.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
It's a tiny sample size. We can't crush the guy.
But when the two most exciting players in the NFL,
you know without question it's Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson.
Those two guys are at the top of the list.
You never know what Mahomes is gonna do, and Lamar
is just his breathtaking to watch him run and scramble.
That being said, why is one of them stacking super bowls?

(04:52):
Patrick Mahomes three super Bowls fifteen and three in the
playoffs and the other is stacking crappy performances in the postseason.
And it matters most and that's Lamar Jackson, who's two
to four in the playoffs. Folks, some of the numbers again,
people are just glossing over it because they're not going
to ask the tough questions. Hey, Lamar, you have three

(05:13):
fumbles lost in the postseason. That's as many touchdown rushes
as you have in the playoffs. You want to look
at the touchdown passes six interception six like it's not great,
it's downright bad. Julian Edelman did call Lamar out this week.
That's rare. You'd rarely see player on player crime, as
they call it. You need truth tellers like me to
come out and be like, Lamar, what's going on? I mean,

(05:34):
if I had the opportunity to sit down to Lamar,
you know, I'm sure there would be some Hey, remember Jay,
remember the game plan from the first time offensive coordinator
Monk and not great? Okay, And there's eight Flowers fumble
at the goal line. Remember that that was pivotal?

Speaker 6 (05:50):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
We do this all the time with Lamar. We bend
over backwards to defend him when the reality is he's
a lot closer to a guy like James Harden or
Joe el Embiid totally utterly dominant regular season players, and
then when it's down the crunch time in the postseason,
when it matters most what happens crickets. Lamar has not

(06:11):
been good in the playoffs. That's a fair criticism. And
then you want to drill down and say, why why
is Lamar so inept offensively in the postseason when it matters.
I mean the two wins that he's had, they were
favored in both games, Okay, so they should have won those.
And in the losses, folks, he has never completed in

(06:31):
those four playoff losses more than fifty eight percent of
his passes. Now again, you can well, Jason, it's achieved.
It's Spagnolo. He's great. I get it. Okay, fine, you
know what, win some damn games that matter. I had
somebody compare when I mentioned Harden and Embiid and Lamar.
They were like, boy, those guys are They're like every
Netflix series I've seen. They start out amazing and you're

(06:55):
texting all your friends, Oh, this show's amazing, incredible, and
then it kind of sort of just goes nowhere and
e and you maybe throw in the towel late. I mean,
if I got Lamar right here on the couch, and
he won't do it because he's not gonna take tough questions.
I'd say, Lamar, man, I'm a huge fan. What's going
on in the playoffs. Let's look at this game right here.
I'm gonna toss the Chargers rookie year forty eight percent complete.

(07:16):
We'll toss that one out. But look at the other ones.
We know the defenses want to contain you in the
pocket and make you win from the pocket. Why can
you win from the pocket in the regular season and
in the playoffs? Is it nerves? Are the windows that
much tighter? Are the game plans that incredible from them?
And that poor from you guys? I mean, there's no
more excuses, folks. John Harball is a great coach, and

(07:39):
I Ravens fans. I don't want to sound on any alarms.
I came here last year and I said, the Buffalo
Bills windows for the Super Bowl is closed. It's done.
Lamar Jackson turns twenty eight in January, and I look,
they lost three offensive linemen. I know everybody's excited. Dereck
Henry ooh, Derreck Henry. We'll see lost the defense coordinator

(08:00):
lost two other defensive coaches down four I think four
defensive starters. Folks. You gotta wonder is the Baltimore Ravens
Super Bowl window closing? And with that, I want to
pivot to a bit more positive story, shockingly positive, and
that's Bill Belichick, mostly because our new teammate here at Fox,
Tom Brady did gave an interview this week and he

(08:22):
said some awesome things about Bill Belichick. Although I will
say some of the framing online this is what people do.
I throw up an inflammatory headline to get you to
click because it's so tough to get clicks now in
twenty twenty four. But if you actually listen to what
Brady said, it sounds super positive on Belichick.

Speaker 7 (08:38):
Here he is I think, without a doubt he's the
greatest coach to ever coach in the history of the NFL.
And sitting in a meeting room with him for twenty years,
there is no coach that I felt more prepared by
than Coach Bill Belichick. And if I would look at
any of these organizations who have any head coaching vacancies,
Bill Belichick to me is a no brainer. Now he's

(09:01):
gonna come and he's gonna be authoritative and he's gonna.

Speaker 6 (09:04):
Have his own way of doing things, and you got
to be okay with that.

Speaker 7 (09:07):
But when I'm looking at a coach to prepare a team,
he's an incredible coach.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
It leads me to I don't know if this is
a hot take warm take, but is Bill Belichick almost
undervalued now from a coaching perspective? You know, I had
one of the guys in the morning meeting mentioned Greg Popovic,
and I was like, oh, so I looked up Popovich.
Popovich hasn't made the playoffs in five years, hasn't won

(09:34):
a playoff series since twenty seventeen, and yet Papovich gets
like no heat. He's still employed by this burs Yet Belichick,
who won more than Popovic. Yeah, Belichick, who's basically known
as the greatest football coach ever, certainly the best defensive
mind NFL history's ever seen, is suddenly chopped liver and

(09:55):
nobody wants anything to do with him. And I know
Colin will end up bashing Belichick for days on end.
It feels a little harsh. So I went and looked
at the last four years of Belichick had Okay, seven
and nine with Cam Newton. That was an experience, experiment whatever.
Then they got mac Jones, and mac Jones got into
the playoffs. They lost, They got smashed by Buffaloe ten

(10:18):
and seven playoffs. And then the following year eight and
nine and again not great obviously not Patriots standards set
by Brady and Belichick. And then last year they fell
off a cliff four and thirteen total dumpster fire, and
they run Belichick out of town. I get it. Okay,
the last seven drafts whatever, He's making, mistakes, getting punters
and guards and just disaster after disaster. Okay, I get that.

(10:42):
But America loves a redemption story.

Speaker 5 (10:45):
Guys.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
They love it when people rise from the ashes to
the top. Remember Belichick was in Cleveland one there they
boot him. I won't rehash the jet story with Belichick,
but he goes to New England, has drew Bledsoe then
pivots to Brady and then does the amazing, incredible, super
impressive reinvention story. Lamar Jackson should listen closely. The Patriots

(11:10):
folks kept reinventing themselves during that tenure. They would be
a defensive first team and they are running the football team.
Then they're two tight ends. Then they go to the
slot guys. Then they got Randy Moss like they continually
were getting creative and smart. I'd say he stay on
top for two decades, right, shouldn't that be commended as
opposed to a four and thirteen horrific final coaching job

(11:33):
and a bunch of bad drafts? Like, at what point
does Bill Belichick become undervalued? We went through some teams, folks,
This is a little staggering. Here are some teams that
could have coaching openings next year. The Chicago Bears. If
eber Flus does not get the job done and they
run him out of town. You don't want to consider

(11:55):
Bill Belichick a guy who knows a little something about winning.
How about this, Dallas. I don't know that that's as
attractive of a job. But Jerry Jones, Hey, you haven't
been to a super Bowl in forever. Maybe get a
guy who's been to more Super Bowls than anyone. Just
a thought, My Jets will gloss over them because I promised,
you know, my family, I would not talk about the
Jets a lot today, maybe tomorrow. And then a couple

(12:18):
spicy ones. What at the Buffalo Bills and McDermott continue
to sag I'm on record predicting they're like a nine
or ten win team and they run off McDermott, Bill
Belichick and Josh Allen Hello. And then of course there's
the Philadelphia Eagles, who are maybe the spiciest fit of all.
I think they're gonna be great. I don't think they'll
run off Sirianni. But if that job opens, you don't

(12:41):
think Belichick would take a veteran roster and a dual
threat quarterback like Jalen Hurts. Are you kidding me? Somebody
somewhere is gonna get Bill Belichick. And I can't believe
I'm saying this, but based on those Brady comments at
the Fanatics FanFest, it's like, Wow, they kind of babe
look at Belichick in a different way. I think there's
a good story here somewhere. Somebody's gonna get lucky next offseason.

(13:06):
So we have a very exciting show ahead. Alex is
gonna regale us with tales from Disneyland and the vip Actno,
she would not do that makes everybody jealous. Yeah, gosh,
I wanted to do. It's a little pricey, but also, hey,
coming up, Steph Curry and Golden State Now listen. I've
been on this for a few weeks and something went

(13:27):
down this week that nobody really noticed, and then they're like, oh,
wait a minute, what uh a little ominance in Golden State.
I don't think we're at def Con one, maybe at
Defcon two or three, somewhere in that range, but that's
coming up next.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and Noone Eastern, non a em Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (13:48):
You are now entering the Noble Zone sponsored by Credible
Great Rates with none of the bull So you guys know,
when I sit in for Colin, I I don't like
to look on social media during breaks because I know
everybody's going to be upset with something I said. But
I did see a great text Lamar Jackson should just
play for the Bears because every winter he goes into hibernation.

(14:09):
I was like, ooh, that's good. I'll repeat that on air.
So anyway, thanks for that. I do want to talk
a little NBA briefly. I know it's August and the
NBA's on the shelf until what October, but something went
down some ego eyed viewers noticed Steph Curry, my guy,
probably my favorite player in sports. He adjusted his Instagram bio. Okay, believer, father, husband, founder, philanthropist,

(14:36):
and Olympic gold medalist. He's got a new photo, which
is understandable, but I you know, I don't see any
connection to the Golden State Warriors on there. Fifty eight
million followers. Impressive, Curry. So we've seen this in the
NFL constantly, right, Brandon and Ayuk A bunch of guys. Hey, man,
I'm unhappy. I'm removing the team from the social media bio.

(14:58):
It's almost like there's a there's a pl that agents
or managers hand the players. Hey, when you're unhappy, this
is how you get what you want. Step one, go
to your social media and remove Warriors. Now, somebody did
point out that on his Twitter he still has Warriors.
But Twitter's is crap, no sins, Elon Muscota, it's garbage.

(15:18):
But Instagram people still like, right, and for Curry to
remove Warriors, like, what do you think? It says? We
like a good conspiracy theory in these waters. And I'll
start with this. Who was Steph Curry hanging out with
all summer in Paris? Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburt and
Jason Tatum. Oh and Lebron James was there. You know,

(15:43):
Lebron might have been might have been the first player
to really start to use social media, to have advantaged
to subtly speak to the team, the coach, the front office,
the owner. He really has been a master at that.
And you start to put crumbs together and follow the trail.
And back in February there was a report at the

(16:06):
deadline the Warriors made a run at Lebron James. Then
as we're leading up to free agency, the Warriors made
a run at Paul George. Okay, then you get into
July and the Warriors are leaders for lowry marketing. Huh

(16:28):
So Warriors trying for splash moves left and right all year?
Why would that be? Well, I don't know. They won
forty six games of finished tenth in the West. And oh,
by the way, they just lost Curry's buddy Klay Thompson.
And you look at that roster. They're not top eight
in the West. Are they top ten? You know? You

(16:49):
look further down the list. Memphis is coming Wembin Yama.
I don't know if him and Chris Paul will get
them there, but they're gonna be better. Folks. There's a
world where Golden State is not even in the play
in this year, and that's when you start to wonder, Okay,
where's Curry gonna play next? And I've been talking about

(17:10):
this subtly. You know, you don't want to be that
guy who puts it out there. Then everybody's like you're
an idiot D man. I don't really care about the
name calling on social media, but the reality is we
like to try to see around corners, see what's coming next.
And I'm just putting you all on notice. By the way,
Steph Curry, I had started a podcast in like twenty ten,
way back, first guest I had I like to brag about.

(17:30):
This was Steph Curry before he was the MVP and
all that stuff. This was post Davidson, pre MVP splash brother.
I just I was a huge Curry fan. I'm just
telling you something is a foot here. Okay. If Golden
State can't get Curry a wingman, there's he's not gonna
end his career in Golden State. He is not gonna
be like Kobe Bryant and go out with the Lakers.

(17:52):
Where Kobe's like, I want to be the highest paid
guy and we're wonning twenty two games with Swish Parker
and whoever. Like Curry's not doing that, He's just not.
I think Kobe thought he could get the Lakers somewhere.
Not with that roster. You couldn't. They were one of
like nineteen games. Okay, Curry's an Olympic gold medalist at
this age. He's certainly got two to three four. I

(18:14):
don't know how many years left in the tank. Lebron's
thriving at thirty nine. I'm just warriors. You're on notice,
Mike Dunleyvy, good luck cleaning this mess up. Curry removes
Warriors from his ig bio and we're probably at Defcon
three in the Bay Area. Let's go to Alex Curry
with the news. No, no, turn on the news.

Speaker 2 (18:36):
This is the Herdline News.

Speaker 4 (18:38):
So, now that you've planted this seed in all of
our heads of Curry possibly moving somewhere if he doesn't
end in Golden State, where do you see it happening?
And you also hinted like how much funn he had
with Lebron. I mean that was a like almost a
spiritual experience watching the two of them play together in
the Olympics, that felt like you were watching a video game.

(19:01):
Could could you imagine?

Speaker 3 (19:02):
Well, I don't know what it is at all, like
the two best I know he's I know he like
spent a lot of time growing up in Charlotte when
his dad was playing for the I guess they with
the Hornets at the time. I don't see him going there,
Uh No, I.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
Think he'd be like a big name place. If you're
going to go somewhere at the end of your career,
you're going to win. Yeah, and like that's same same
with Lebron and he did game to La he won.
Paper's crossed a Bagan slowly get back to back. Yeah,
we'll figure it out. Okay, We've got some breaking news
in the NFL a rare Indivision trade as the Commanders
are sending wide receiver Johan Dotson to the Eagles along

(19:40):
with a fifth round pick. In return, Washington is getting
a third round pick and two seventh round picks from Philly.
So very interesting to see this happen, trading your number
two wide receiver two this close to the regular season. Now,
you do have to remember Commanders it's new ownership group,
new head coach, new oc, new quarterback, so you shouldn't

(20:03):
be too surprised.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
To see them making some changes. But you also have.

Speaker 4 (20:10):
Yeah, he's one of the top guys coming in, but
Jayden Daniels a rookie quarterback, Like, do you have that
much faith in him that you're okay trading away one
of his top weapons a couple of weeks before the
season starts.

Speaker 3 (20:22):
You gotta wonder what's going on here? Right? Well, I mean,
this guy was a first he was a sixteenth overall
pick in.

Speaker 4 (20:27):
Twenty two, but you could say he kind of underachieved
in He's a little on the tiny side, so he's
had some injuries.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
Yeah, but like you said, you got a rookie quarterback
in Jaydeon Daniels. The depth chart behind scary Terry McLaurin,
who's excellent, Yeah, is Diami Brown and then rookie Luke McCaffrey.
I think that's Christian's brother.

Speaker 7 (20:51):
Who's a rookie.

Speaker 3 (20:52):
And then it's like the kid Zuchias Jamison Crowder, Martavius
Bryant or Martavis Bryant. Sorry, I don't This is a
way weird wide receiver.

Speaker 4 (21:01):
We are trading away one of your first round picks. Yeah,
this it raises a lot of questions. But then when
you look at the other side for the Eagles, yeah
they're going all in. But yeah, but they also I
mean you we kind of been talking about it. Nick
Siriani's kind of on the hot seat heading into the
season the way last year ended, and then all the

(21:22):
talk between him and Jalen Hurts not being on the
best of terms, not having the greatest relationship, but saying,
you know, everybody, everybody has their relationship issues. It's like,
if you're if you're good, you're not going to say
that everything's fine. So Eagles going all in commanders big
question marks and again an in division trade two weeks before.

Speaker 3 (21:42):
The seam starts.

Speaker 4 (21:44):
I'm just I don't know what to make more questions.

Speaker 3 (21:48):
It does Washington yet, maybe they know something that we don't.
I don't maybe McCaffrey, pops, I don't know, Dianmi Brown.
It has shown flashes.

Speaker 4 (21:58):
But they got a third round pick in two seventh
round picks.

Speaker 3 (22:01):
Yeah, that's not gonna help them.

Speaker 4 (22:02):
It's not that's what what does that do for you?

Speaker 3 (22:05):
Right now? Maybe they're trying to build something and there's
no rush. But to you know, Cliff Kingsbury, offensive guy.

Speaker 4 (22:14):
It's all new everything, ownership, quarterback, head coach, offensive coordinator.

Speaker 3 (22:19):
Like this is a whole new system. Yeah, we're all
you on Washington this year.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
Any I, this.

Speaker 4 (22:26):
Makes me question it. But I kind of had them
as like my dark horse surprise team. Oh yeah, like
I thought. I thought they were gonna come out and
kind of surprise everybody.

Speaker 3 (22:34):
Just I had this.

Speaker 4 (22:39):
I want to hear some answers. I want a presser.
I need some presser. Sound right now, Well, you know what.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
They're gonna do. Deflected Mark Jackson. Now I need more.

Speaker 4 (22:47):
Okay, now let's talk about your Jets. Robert Solid made
it official that Jets starters will not play in the
preseason finale this weekend. Now, this means Aaron Rodgers now
heads into the regular season without taking a single preseason snap,
So no preseason reps, no mandatory mini camp, a brand
new offensive line. But you also, like everybody, remember, Rogers

(23:09):
is coming off the biggest injury of his career, possibly
the biggest injury that you can have in football to
come back from in any sport, and he snapped his
achilles four snaps into the regular season last year, So like,
you don't want to take any risk of him possibly
hurting himself.

Speaker 3 (23:27):
In a preseason game.

Speaker 4 (23:28):
But is that worry you heading into Week one without
having kind of any reps, you know, I think.

Speaker 3 (23:36):
Kirk Cousins would probably worry me a bit more in
Atlanta since it's a new team coming off the injury.
Whereas Rogers was at least with the squad last year.
He knows he built chemistry with the receivers last year
in the preseason. This year, obviously the offensive line, Like
you said that that could be an issue with three
new starters, But.

Speaker 4 (23:56):
Chemistry on the field and off the field is different. Yeah, right,
getting that feel, getting your looks down, getting your timing down.
He missed a whole season of that. Yeah, he got
that in the preseason last year, and then he got
to build relationships off the field.

Speaker 3 (24:12):
You'll have to Those are.

Speaker 4 (24:13):
Four snaps in one in the first game. That's that's
all we've seen is Aaron Rodgers and the Jets in
the regular Alex, You're welcome. I just it's it's a
little disappointing, But let's be real. If you're Robert starting,
oh no.

Speaker 3 (24:27):
I mean, and and something happens to Rogers in the
preseason game and he's down for eight weeks, it's over.
You's fired, It's over.

Speaker 4 (24:33):
I mean, they have to do a lot this year,
right their favorite and what like fourteen games four games
and they have six primetime.

Speaker 3 (24:41):
Games primetime games out, So if he gets hurt in
Week one against the Niners, they're also screwed. But at
least to come out.

Speaker 4 (24:48):
He's going to come out and said this is the
hardest camp that he's ever had in his career.

Speaker 3 (24:52):
Maybe that's his way of subtly saying I don't want
to play in the preseason. I just, I mean busted
my tail.

Speaker 4 (24:57):
Honestly, with how much the Jets have writing on Aaron
Rodgers to be healthy and have a good season, I
wouldn't either just not take that risk. Then, Like what,
he only again made it four snaps in the first game.
That's all you got of him last year. If you
got hurt in preseason and you didn't get him at
all this year, I j Mack, I'm a little nervous.

Speaker 3 (25:19):
For your Jets. Well you should be. Yeah, yeah, just
a little bit.

Speaker 4 (25:23):
Okay, let's switch gears and move to Major League Baseball
where Aaron Judge smacked his forty sixth and forty seventh
home run of the season yesterday. Here was Michael Kay
on the call.

Speaker 8 (25:38):
Triving deep to write, Holy dude, he goes the other way.
Two both runs for Judge. Ain't nothing hits.

Speaker 4 (25:51):
Now Judge is on pace for yeah, a sixty home
run season, and in addition to home runs, if you
see on the screen here, he leads the league in
RBI OBBS slugging and now his Yankees are back in
first place.

Speaker 1 (26:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (26:06):
No, he's absolutely crushing Major League Baseball RBI, extra bassist
total based slugging percentage.

Speaker 3 (26:13):
You are than I do? Is he having a better
year than Otani?

Speaker 4 (26:17):
Okay, well, yeah, I mean Aaron Judge has forty seven
home runs. Otani has thirty nine, so they're both leading
the National League, in the American League in home runs.
But the thing is, Aaron Judge is one of the
greatest power hitters of our generation, and he got injured
at Dodger Stadium last year where he broke his toe,

(26:37):
hurt his toe. He never fully rebounded from that. He
was also kind of injured to start this season, and
once he came back about a month into the season,
he kind of clicked. So you have to remember, like
he had an extremely slow start the first month and
then now now he's leading the league in almost every
single offensive statistic. And if the Yankees want to go

(26:58):
far this season an into the postseason, this is the
kind of performance that they need from Aaron Judge. And
before the season started, I picked the Yankees and the
Dodgers typing my World Series team. Everyone laughed at me,
called it cop out. Oh, you want the two biggest teams,
But like they have the top players in the league
with Aaron Judge, Shoeheo Tani. When these two guys are

(27:21):
ranking and just like doing what they're doing right now,
leading the league in home runs in both the National
League and American League, it's great for baseball, it's great
for their teams, and it's it just makes me feel
really confident about my pick.

Speaker 3 (27:37):
I had to look up Aaron Judge and yeah, he
wasn't even like the number one overall pick or anything
like he was a first round pick, but thirty second, Yeah,
I mean what that was.

Speaker 4 (27:45):
Same with Mike Trout.

Speaker 3 (27:47):
Try to help me put him in perspective. You said
one of the great power hitters of our generation. I
don't know who will he compare to long term? Like
is this are we looking at?

Speaker 4 (27:58):
Well, he was just the he was the fastest player
to three hundred home runs, so that happened last week,
faster than a Rod and the fan player in Major
league history to get to three hundred home runs. The
thing is he's a little older in his career, so
will he be able to reach Barry Bond's all time

(28:19):
home run record and all that kind of stuff. He
did break the all time American League home run record
Yankees or Yankees' home run record, so two seasons ago.
I think that was. So he has the potential to
be great, but he gets injured. He's he's dealt with
a lot of injuries, but he when he's hot. This
is the kind of stuff you're seeing right now. So

(28:40):
he's each balls.

Speaker 3 (28:41):
I mean, like Don Maddingley was my favorite Yankee for
the longest time. Yeah, and then it was Jeter obviously. Yeah,
and now I think probably Judge is Judge is probably
passing Maddenly's accomplishments for sure.

Speaker 4 (28:53):
Yeah, he's the captain. He is first captain.

Speaker 3 (28:57):
Since it's gonna be tough to reach Jeter's status. Jeter's
an icon for Yankees, yeah, judge, but you will do.

Speaker 4 (29:04):
He's the new face. Yeah, oh he is. He is
the new face of the Yankees. They got to win
a World Series. If that's the other thing too, is
like the Yankees have not had postseason success. It's been
in a really long time. If he can get this
team to the World Series, win a World Series, then
we can kind of have that conversation of Yankee legends
and where he ranks among them. Stat wise, He's hitting

(29:26):
good numbers, but legendary status, especially coming from a franchise
like the Yankees, where it should be World Series or
bus but it hasn't been that in the last decade.
If he can get that franchise back to that mentality
and back to that state.

Speaker 3 (29:41):
Yeah you got a chance. I can't wait for October.
Yankees baseball that matters in the postseason, and the Jets
will be probably like six and one in October. We'll
give the loss in the Niners, but after that, it's.

Speaker 4 (29:52):
That's a confidence that's common in Jack.

Speaker 3 (29:55):
All right, Alex Curry with the news, Well, that's the news,
and thanks for stopping the herd line.

Speaker 6 (30:01):
There all right.

Speaker 3 (30:02):
Coming up next, Dave Hellman, covered the Cowboys for many years,
appears on Speak Here at FS one. He's joining the show.
I guess we'll have to talk about the ceedee Lamb
Dak Micah. Maybe he'll like my trade Michael Parson's idea
I floated like two months ago that everybody hated, But
that's next year on the Herd.

Speaker 2 (30:20):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern non am Pacific.

Speaker 9 (30:25):

Speaker 6 (30:52):
Podcast or wherever you get your podcast.

Speaker 3 (30:55):
I just discovered j Lab headphones and I'm hooked. Colin
went east and has been raving about j Lab headphones.
I will be going to Vegas next week, Yes, next week,
and I hope to get myself some j Lab headphones.
They didn't send him to me. They just send him
to the big guy, because you know he's Colin Cowherd.

(31:16):
Find the Blue Box at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and more,
or visit JLab dot com. All right, we got a
great guest here. Dave Hellman is in studio. He has
covered the NFL and call the Cowboys. I don't know
how you deal with covering the Cowboys. Man, Oh my gosh.
So let's get started. I you know, every show here
on the all day it's Cowboys, Cowboys, Cowboys. Of course

(31:39):
you're the perfect guy to bring in. What's like the
spiciest angle you like? Is it Ceedee lamb unhappy? Is
it Dak not having a future deal? Is it McCarthy
being lame duck? Like? There's a lot of fun angles.

Speaker 10 (31:50):
For me, it's and I know we give too much
oxygen to the quarterbacks, but in the case of the Cowboys,
I think it has to be Dak Prescott because the rest,
the way I keep framing it is the rest of
this is all very normal right, Like it's normal to
have a coach in a contract year, it's normal to
have your wide receiver holding out for more money, Like
that's happening around the league.

Speaker 6 (32:09):
Bran and I, you and Jamar Chase are doing it.
It happens.

Speaker 10 (32:13):
It's unprecedented for your franchise quarterback to not have a
deal and also have the leverage to leave if he
wants to.

Speaker 6 (32:20):
And I think that is what people need to remember.

Speaker 10 (32:22):
This is different because Dak Prescott has a no tag clause,
He's got a no trade clause. The Cowboys can't keep
him there if they if they don't sign him. So
when this season gets going, I think we would all
agree it's very rare to see a deal get done
in season. So what we're two weeks out from the
start of the season, and if Dak doesn't have a deal,
you can go ahead and assume he's going to hit

(32:44):
free agency in March at the age of thirty one
with an all pro to his name. And I just
think it's going to be a free agent market lit
that we've rarely seen before.

Speaker 3 (32:53):
Well it's weird because I forget who was somebody up
here was like, oh, Dak's going to have all these options,
the Raiders and maybe the Giants and all this stuff.
And I'm like, I like Dak. I think he's been
a good quarterback. I'm a little higher on him than
most people. I don't see any team out there saying, hey,
let's pay this guy, Let's bring him in, paying fifty

(33:15):
five million a year to be our quarterback. When you
can't build a team around a guy like that, it's
a lot tougher. How about you really think the market
will be that robust for Dak?

Speaker 6 (33:25):
How about sixty instead? Oh yeah, no, I do, I
really do.

Speaker 10 (33:28):
And we only have to look back to twenty eighteen,
and it might not have been a robust market in
the number of teams. I do think sometimes we get
swept up and we exaggerate the number of teams because
there's not going to be a large number of teams
that both have the money and have the willingness and

(33:49):
don't have a quarterback already in the pipeline. But even
if we're talking about four teams, I mean to think
back to twenty eighteen. I believe the New York Jets
wearing on Kirk Cousins. Obviously, the Minnesota Vikings were in
on Kirk Cousins as well, and they were willing to
guarantee him every dime of his contract. I think it
was three years, eighty four million something like that.

Speaker 6 (34:11):
That was six years.

Speaker 10 (34:12):
Now go for inflation, and teams are desperate for quarterback play.
It's easy if you're a cowboy fan who doubts Dak,
or if you don't like Dak, to say, well, he can't.

Speaker 6 (34:21):
Get over the hump.

Speaker 10 (34:22):
You know how many teams would kill to win thirty
six regular season games over three years. That is a
fantastic record, regardless of what happens in the playoffs. And
the Carolina Panthers and the New York Giants and the
Las Vegas Raiders, these are teams that would kill for
the success that Dak Prescott has had, even if it
hasn't been good enough, it's a nice starting point.

Speaker 6 (34:43):
So yes, I do think teams will want that.

Speaker 3 (34:44):
You know, you got the NFL on Fox podcast. You've
been covering the league. If you're building a team, Dave
h Helman, would you say I'm going to draft a
quarterback every year or would you go the route of
I'm going to pay for an established guy.

Speaker 6 (34:58):
I mean draft and develop time and time again been
shown as the way to do it. That's a good question.

Speaker 10 (35:05):
I mean, I think there's a couple of different philosophies there.
I love, you know, it was Ron Wolf, the legendary
GM of the Packers that basically drafted a quarterback late
in the draft every year. And the analogy I love
is you're buying a lotto ticket. You know, it's low cost,
high reward. So I do think you should always have
a developmental guy in there. But again, and I don't

(35:26):
know what would what would happen if Dak actually hits
the market, But the Raiders are such a fantastic reference
point because I really think the Raiders are ready to
compete right now.

Speaker 6 (35:37):
If they had a quarterback.

Speaker 10 (35:39):
They got one of the best pass rushes in the NFL,
the offensive line is solid, you got DeVante Adams, you
got these two young tight ends. I'm not trying to
tell anybody the Raiders would be the best team in
the league. But if you put Dak Prescott on that team,
they're capable of winning double digit games.

Speaker 6 (35:54):
I don't think that's a stretch at all.

Speaker 3 (35:56):
No, I think that sounds good. But from a financial standpoint,
can they go from paying minshe aid O'Connell nothing to
sixty to Dak.

Speaker 10 (36:02):
It becomes problematic, it becomes hard to do, But I
do think you can do it. I mean, teams show
us all the time that you can make the financials
work however you want to. Is it gonna put stress
on your cap Is it gonna make it harder to
hold on to guys? Of course, but I think it's
a problem you're willing to figure out if your quarterback
is capable of winning ten plus games.

Speaker 3 (36:21):
Like the Falcons going after Kirk Cousins, they have almost
all their skill position. Guys are on the cheap right
drug London, Pitts, Bijon all super cheap, so I think
they can afford it. I mean that DeVante Adams contract
is massive.

Speaker 10 (36:34):
And it limits I think in this day and age,
you can afford to have two to four mega contracts.
And I mean, since we're talking about the Raiders, you
got Max Crosby, you got Christian Wilkins, and you would
have Davante. If you were to add Dak to that team,
you better be drafting successfully consistently.

Speaker 6 (36:55):
To be able to afford everything.

Speaker 10 (36:57):
But I do think NFL front offices can make and
like I said, it's a good headache to have.

Speaker 6 (37:02):
I believe it was. It was Brian gudokustin Green Bay.

Speaker 10 (37:04):
They paid Jordan Love and he basically said, this is
going to be a challenge for us, but it's a
problem I'll take over not knowing who my quarterback is
every time.

Speaker 3 (37:13):
That's a great point, do you think? And again, I
don't know how your relationship with Jerry is, whether you
guys are text buddies or whatever, but I do have
to ask, like, how much do you think the playoff
losses to brock Purdy. I think they lost to Jimmy
Garoppol a.

Speaker 6 (37:28):
Few years ago on to the play I'm twenty one.

Speaker 3 (37:29):
Yeah, yeah, Jimmy Garoppolo, Brock Purty and Jordan Love beat
the Cowboys. Those are none of those guys were high
paid guys. Brock Purty last pick in the draft. How
much of that do you think is fuel? And Jerry's like, man,
uh huh.

Speaker 6 (37:41):
We're moving on.

Speaker 10 (37:42):
I mean, I think you have to assume that the
playoff failures have have hurt Jerry and are motivating some
of this. Otherwise somebody would have a new deal, somebody
would right like you either signed Dak because you think
that's good enough, or at the very least, Mike McCarthy
would have a new deal. Well, coaches salaries. Coaches contracts

(38:02):
don't affect the salary cap, so like, there's no there's
no competitive reason why Mike McCarthy can't have a new
deal right now other than disappointment at how the playoffs
have gone. So yes, I think we make a mistake
trying to set an arbitrary goal, like Dak and Mike
have to win a playoff game, they have to get
to the NFC title game. I think Jerry Jones is

(38:24):
the only one that knows specifically what it needs to
look like. But one of these guys would have a
deal if Jerry Jones was completely satisfied by what had happened.

Speaker 3 (38:34):
Yeah, and I like how you phrased that what it
would look like. Like, let's say they play a first
round playoff game against the Lions and lose forty two
to forty one in a thriller on the last second
field goal by Detroit. Like, that's not the worst result
in the world. Detroit's like a Super Bowl team, I do.
I'm sure you're sick of Cowboys questions one more. There
is a big disconnect between the narrative TV shows, web podcasts.
The sky is falling in Dallas, it's nearly over, Whereas

(38:57):
you go to Vegas and look at the gambling odds
and it's like, oh, they have a high wind total
and they're favorite in thirteen games and they've won twelve
games each of the last three years. That's a big
dramatic disconnect. I mean, you've got guys like Cowherd saying
no playoffs for Calfo the Cap.

Speaker 6 (39:12):
I saw that. I didn't see that from Colin.

Speaker 3 (39:14):
Vegas is saying like the opposite. But anyways, I'm curious
your thoughts.

Speaker 10 (39:17):
I do think it's the Dallas Cowboys. It's the biggest brand,
it's the most polarizing team. Nobody has a lukewarm opinion
about Dallas, and I think people lose the plot a
little bit. And I've always I've said this, the Cowboys
are still a good team. I think they're a playoff team.
Maybe not win the division because they got.

Speaker 6 (39:34):
To deal with the Eagles, but I think they're a
playoff team.

Speaker 10 (39:37):
But what the question is, and it goes back to
what we were just talking about, is it good enough
for everybody to keep their jobs. Like, are they better
than the team that didn't come close last year? And
I don't think they are. I don't think this is
a better team than the one that Green Bay bounced
out of the playoffs. I will say, ironically, we were
just talking about this during the break. I feel better

(39:58):
about the Cowboys in the last ten days then I
did all offseason because now we're in camp. And first
you get to training camp, Tyler Geyton, the rookie left tackle,
looks fantastic in the preseason, the young center Cooper Bebee
playing well, and you're like, okay, like the offensive line
might not be an issue. Then they go out and
sign Carl Lawson, the veteran pass rusher. They just signed

(40:19):
Lynval Joseph to help their run game. I'm not trying
to say that these moves are going to put them
over the top, but they are finally addressing things that
have been concerning me all off season. Long go figure
Jerry Jones waiting till the very last minute.

Speaker 3 (40:33):
Maybe the next move is Dalvin Cook added to the
running back.

Speaker 6 (40:36):
I would like to see them at a running back.

Speaker 10 (40:38):
I don't know if it's Dalvin Cook, but I do
think that's an area where they could stand to improve.

Speaker 3 (40:42):
We got less than a minute to play. One other question,
are the New York Giants the worst team in football
or just a dumpster fire.

Speaker 10 (40:48):
Because you know the NFCS, Well, I don't think it's
ever as bad as it looks. I mean, I know
we all saw the Daniel Jones picks. I don't think
it's ever as bad as it looks when you go
viral like that. But I I'm sorry, Daniel Jones. I'm
just not a believer. I like some things about the Giants,
like you talk about pass rushes. They've got a great one.
I'm excited to see what Thelak Neighbors does. I don't
think the Giants are gonna be the worst team in

(41:09):
the league, but I do think they will have a
new quarterback next week.

Speaker 3 (41:13):
Positive comments.

Speaker 6 (41:14):
Dave Hellman, good stuff, ray of Sunshine Over.

Speaker 3 (41:17):
Yes, indeed host of the NFL on Fox podcast rights
for Fox Sports. We got a lot of coverage online.
It's tremendous. Thank you, Dave. Have a great Well, it's
only Thursday, but.

Speaker 6 (41:27):
I have a great weekend anyway, man, anytime you all
for sure?

Speaker 3 (41:29):
All right? We got we survived, the first hour coming up.
In hour number two, I came up with something called
a J Max six pack. We're gonna crack a sixer.
The six teams that will take down the Kansas City
