Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
All right, our three, we finally had Dana White.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
He's busy. He's in New Orleans. UFC three eighteen. That's
gonna be a great.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Card highlighted by one of those classic fights. Canmemrwyn McGregor
and Nate Diaz would meet two and three times and
you're like, Saturday, you knew what you were gonna be doing.
And I think we got Dustin Fourier, who who's one
of the all time most likable fighters, most interesting, most
entertaining against Max Holloway.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
They're meeting for a third time.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
I don't want to waste Jana White's time.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
He's the CEO in the UFC President.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
He is joining us live from New Orleans, and we
appreciate his busy guy. So what's interesting in the history
of UFC. The best fighters I've ever seen are John Jones,
who was unbelievable in his prime, and I think Kabebe
who made even Connor McGregor look completely upmatched. But Dustin Pourrier,
who fights Holloway tomorrow, is one of the more entertaining, likable,
(01:18):
interesting guys. He's on that second tier of guys that
when he fights, I have to watch. Did you envision
him when you found him being this great, this captivating
for this long Dana.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
Who Max and Dustin? I mean, yeah, yeah, Well you
never know.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
You never know.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
Obviously, you know when he first faced Connor, they were
really uh early in their careers, and and Connor won
that fight. Uh, And you never know how a guy
is going to bounce back from a loss. But if
you look at Poorier's last eleven fights, I mean, it's
it's all been straight killers, and seven of them are
(02:00):
former world champions.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
So he's absolutely.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
A very special fighter, as is Max Holloway, which is
what makes this fight so intriguing, and.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
The history of the UFC, nobody's landed more strikes than Holloway,
and the poree will sit in the middle of the
ring and throw blows. Is you know what's interesting about
your sport? And I was talking to a member of
the staff. When Caitlin Clark came to the WNBA, they
weren't prepared for it. They weren't well run, they weren't
well organized. She's overwhelmed them. The officiating's bad. You got
(02:34):
you and the Fertita has ran a great sport. So
when Connor McGregor arrived, you were prepared for it. But
like Caitlin Clark, he was so damn popular, so fast,
And I want you.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
To talk about that.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
You have not only been on the ground floor, but
you had your Caitlin Clark. You had a superstar emerge
that was literally the most viral human being in American sports.
So as the WNBA is struggling with Caitlin, go back
to the Connor of what it's like to run a
sport and here comes a superstar, a Taylor Swift, into
(03:06):
your lap. Do you remember was it great? Did it
create anxiety? Take us back to that time?
Speaker 6 (03:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (03:13):
No, I mean the first time that I ever sat
down and had dinner with Connor McGregor in Las Vegas.
He flew out from Ireland and I left the dinner
and I called Lorenzo for Tita, and I said, let
me tell you what. I don't know if this guy
can fight or not, but if you can even throw
a punch, he's gonna be a huge superstar.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Fro Us And.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
Obviously, you know we leaned into that, and you're right. Listen,
Caitlin Clark is a massive superstar.
Speaker 5 (03:37):
I'm a fan.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
So all the stuff that I got going on right now.
I actually had my assistant look to see when I
have season tickets to the Aces, so I had them
find out, you know, when she was coming to town,
and I'm clear in my schedule so I can go
to that game and watch her play live. I agree
with what you're saying.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Yeah, so you are apparently I just read this the
other day and this made news.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
I'm going to have a card at the White House.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
So you've gone to an island, you travel around the country,
now you're going to have something at the White House. Obviously,
I mean they're security and all these things. Were you
shocked when that was offered to you or did you
know that was coming?
Speaker 4 (04:17):
I did not know was coming. Yeah, but when he
offered it up, I was like, oh yeah, I'm all
in on this. So we've already sent a logistics team
out there that have walked the White House. There's calls
going back and forth every day between Craig We're sorry,
and my head of production and the White House, and
then we will have all these renderings done within the
next ten days and where to fly out and sit
(04:39):
down and walk them through it and see what he
wants and what he doesn't want.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
So you're also getting involved in boxing with Canelo and Crawford.
So you and I have talked about this. We both
grew up boxing fans. I grew up with Mohammad Alian Frasier.
I grew up with Sugar Anne Hearns and Hagler. You
did too as a Boston guy, and then you're part
of UFC. I prefer UFC. I think it's more consistent.
(05:04):
I think the quality the women's division. But I still
have a soft spot for a great boxing match. I
saw Pachio fight six times. So as you go into boxing,
why did you choose to do it?
Speaker 4 (05:18):
You know, I've been talking about it for a long time.
You know, I've had a lot of criticism of boxing
over the years, and now here I am. It's time
to put my money where my mouth is. And tickets
go on sale today, actually for Canelo Crawford a Legiance
Stadium September thirteenth, Tickets on sale today. You know, for
(05:39):
me to be able to my first boxing match that
I'm going to promote other than McGregor Mayweather is Canelo
versus Crawford, you know, two of the greatest fighters of
our era and in a big, massive fight in a
stadium in Las Vegas. I mean, this whole thing just
sort of.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
Fell in my lap.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
I have other plans and twenty six and what I'm
going to do with boxing, but this fight here, Yeah,
this just sort of happened, shake turkey, and I ended up.
Speaker 5 (06:10):
Doing this deal for me to promote this fight.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
So Max Holloway and Dustin Poorier tomorrow. One of the
hard things for you, even a Nick Connin' WWE, although
USC is different obviously, is finding your next star. Now,
in the NFL, you have a draft, you have seven
rounds of draft and they.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Come to you.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
But in your world, where do you find Take me
behind the scenes on the standard, where do you find
your next Dustin Poorier?
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Where do you find your stars?
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Are you flying around the globe to find Do you
have a team of people that do that?
Speaker 5 (06:41):
Yeah, we do.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
I have matchmakers that are always looking for up and
coming talent, but where it really comes from. Right now,
We do a show called Data White's Contender Series.
Speaker 5 (06:51):
Yeah, starts in August, and.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
The best unsigned fighters in the world fight each other
on this show to see who warns the contract and
it's it's been unbelievable for creating talent. We've already had
three world champions come off that show. So yeah, that's
that's really where it is right now.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
Okay, UFC three to eighteen, Halloway Pooria tomorrow. The Smoothie
King Center in New Orleans is great, by the way,
it's a great, great venue. It's going to be wild
because Potier is actually from there. Holloway's from Hawaii. Before
I let you go forever, there was this stupid stigma
about you can't have pro teams in Vegas, and you know,
it was ridiculous. I mean, it just apps. I mean,
(07:34):
nobody monitors sports gambling like Vegas. They don't want games thrown.
So now you've got hockey UFC, You've got a baseball coming,
You've got the Raiders For people that haven't been to
Vegas in a while, are you surprised? How willing over
the last five years pro sports have been I mean,
(07:55):
you were the first in that, really you you because
boxing was all over the place. Are you surprised is
that people have finally embraced Vegas over the last half decade.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
Well, I think it was the gambling issue.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
I think that you know, they were so stuck on
the gambling issue, and one stacking over.
Speaker 5 (08:11):
You could tell if you grew up in Vegas.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
When you think about the un LV running Rebels, they
were like the pro team when I was a kid,
and they were so well supported and you know, financially
and people buying tickets and the list goes on and on.
I knew that. Listen, if you're going to go to
an away game for your team anytime during the year,
which one are you gonna pick? You're definitely going to Vegas.
(08:37):
It's it's a no brainer. You go in there. You
have an unbelievable weekend, tons of hotels, the greatest restaurants
in the world, the best shopping, There's always something to do,
and it's just a noble I mean, there are so
many sports to you. There's gonna be a ping pong
league there pretty soon. Vegas is the sports capital of
(08:58):
the world right.
Speaker 3 (08:58):
Now, Dustin Poorier before we go.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
When but a boxer gets older and do they say
to you, hey, Dana, this is gonna be my last fight.
Do you approach them sometimes and go, you know what, man,
we care about your health, We care about you as
a guy. When you get a poorier who's still very good,
how who makes the decision, Dana is it? Do you
ever lead that and say, hey, guy, I think he
(09:22):
had about two fights left.
Speaker 5 (09:25):
Well, Poorier in Holloway are ranked number four and number.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
Five in the world and the nastiest division in the sport.
So you know it's not like they're they're on this
huge decline or anything like that. And you know, Pourier
was the one that said I think I'm ready to retire,
and he wanted to do it here, you know, in
his home state. And think about this highest grossing event
(09:49):
in arena history tonight over seven or Saturday night and
over seventeen thousand in attendance. So still a huge superstar still,
you know, on top up of this game, and a
legitimate badass fight for his last fight, you know, his
retirement fight. So now there's stuff I would never go
to a guy like POORI and say, hey, you should
(10:11):
think about, you know, retiring. There have been guys, but
it's usually guys that are on a skid and don't
want to retire it. Those are usually the ones that
I say, you know, you should probably hang it up.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
So I'm buying it tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Max Holloway, Dustin Poorier UFC three eighteen. Danny, you're a
busy guy. I always appreciate you stopping buying giving.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
The herd ten minutes.
Speaker 5 (10:32):
Good to see you, buddy.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
All Right, it's gonna be a great fight. Those guys
will stand in the middle of the ring. Poorier's last fight.
Holloway is still good, Halloway more of a volume guy.
Poorier is gonna stand out and try to knock you out.
So that's gonna be good stuff. Dana White stopping by
tomorrow's headlines today as well. I know what I'm doing
tomorrow night. A lot of people be out partying, not me.
J Mac home early buying it ready to go.
Speaker 7 (10:56):
But are you having a cocktail with Zach Taylor or
something that's going on?
Speaker 3 (10:59):
No, Hey, by the way, what's your poll?
Speaker 1 (11:00):
Say?
Speaker 3 (11:00):
Now?
Speaker 8 (11:01):
Now?
Speaker 7 (11:01):
Oh, let me call it up here moments Carey, I
really don't like this Twitter machine, but uh okay, currently,
oh the gap is shrunk. Zach Taylor fifty six percent,
Mike McDaniel forty three percent. So it was fifty seven
now out of fifty six. You know, if you could
get on that Twitter machine and pop it. You know
your sizeable audience over there, Mike side with you or me?
Speaker 1 (11:22):
If there's I've always said our audience is very intelligent
and over time they fall on the right side.
Speaker 7 (11:27):
Yeah, when I call them the unwashed masses, that was
probably not a good move.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
Right now, you probably lost six percent right there. There
you go.
Speaker 6 (11:33):
Hey, it's me Rob Parker.

Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd weekdays
and noon Easter not a Empacific.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
All right, Dana White stopped by today Tomorrow's headlines today
as well, we had it was from we had Urban
Meyer on yesterday. I've said that this time of the
year is sort of dead and the bread crumb has
become raging infernos of misinformation. But I do think one
of the really interesting stories this week, and this is
what we do on the show, is that Greg McElroy
(12:31):
down in Alabama.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
He's a very.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Former, smart guy, former one of the better college football
guys covering the sport. He said he's been told saban
sniffing around coaching again. Lane Kiffin, also very connected to
the SEC, also mentioned it. I know both, I trust both,
So if Lane's saying it, and if Greg McElroy is
(12:54):
saying it, he's sniffing it. And that's nothing against the
network he works at now, but he he's a guy
that needs to be challenged. I've always had this theory
about Nick. Nick thinks he's as good a coach as Belichick.
I'm not saying he's wrong. He's the best college coach ever,
and I think it just wrankles him that he went
to the pros. The team doctor wouldn't let have Drew
(13:15):
Brees and go look at Jim Harbaugh. Super competitive, hardball,
got to a super Bowl, won a Natty in the minute,
a top quarterback was available, and an ownership group that
would pay for a great coaching staff.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
He left.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
I mean, Michigan was loaded, recruiting was rolling, Big Ten
was expanding, Jim was the talk of the sport. He's like,
I'm out, So I just Nick is old herb but
does not play oled. Here's Urban yesterday on sabing to
the NFL.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Potentially, I have not talked to him about this.
Speaker 8 (13:50):
I could guess because I know him fairly well and
competed against him, that it's not a little scratch. It's
probably a pretty big scratch that that's the one area
that he is not you know, you know he, like
you said, he's getting things going on Miami. I actually
visited him when he was down there. But I don't
think he'd go back to college. I don't see that fit.
(14:11):
I would say very little to no chance he would
get involved in college. But I think he would take
phone calls from the NFL.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
So do I.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
And again, the math is pretty simple. Six openings a year,
maybe seven college coaches are not leaving their post and
sniffing around the NFL as much because with the nil
universities can't afford.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
To buy him out.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
You're not going to get You're not buying out Brian
Kelly and Lincoln Riley. You're not buying him out. And
an owner doesn't want to have to write a seventy
million dollar check for a new coach and buy him
out of his college contract for seventy If you wanted
to buy out right now, Lincoln Riley be seventy million,
eighty million dollars at USC and then you have to
pay him eighty and even billionaires have their limitations.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Then he's unproven, it's not really proven.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
He can build a program in college, he can inherit
a pro Graham Oklahoma. Can he build his own That's
still unproven. So, uh, A lot to talk about here.
J Mack with the News.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
This is the headline news, all right.
Speaker 7 (15:13):
We haven't talked about the Colts in a minute. Anthony
Richardson Colin. Remember they shut him down this offseason due
to soreness in his shoulder as he was recovering from
shoulder surgery. Sounds like those issues are behind him. Multiple
reports indicate Anthony Richardson is believed to have recovered. I'm
being ready to go next week when training camp opens.
(15:34):
It feels like Daniel Jones versus Anthony Richardson for the
starting spot. I mean, Jones is a veteran, but he's
learning a new offense. I mean he ended very badly
in New York. Richardson obviously drafted in the top five.
They are invested in him. An he read from you
on who has.
Speaker 6 (15:51):
The EDGs going into camp next week.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
I trust.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
My sources in the league in the general manager spot,
and they like Daniel Jones more. We just think he's
more consistently accurate. Anthony Richardson, either general manager tell me
he was the least accurate quarterback on simple throws he'd
ever seen in the NFL who was a starter. So
(16:17):
he's a good kid. He's a hard working kid. But
we've always talked about this, j Mac. You got to
hit your lamps in the NFL. You got to get
eight or nine those things out in the flat. You
got to be ten for ten. You can't skip the
ball out there, you can't sail it to a guy
in the flat. You got to get you know, as
great as Mahomes is and he'll make two or three
throws a game that are wow. He makes about eighteen
throws a game. He doesn't miss him. You do a
(16:40):
curl route, you're open, you do a drag rout, you
do something in the flat. Mahomes doesn't miss those. Herbert
doesn't miss those. C. J. Stroud doesn't miss him. Anthony
Richardson struggles on twelve yards in on the easy stuff.
Speaker 7 (16:50):
He Josh Allen struggled on those early as well. Josh
Allen had way more college starts. Remember, Richardson barely started
any games in college. It was like twelve or four team,
some low number. And now he's been hurt and hasn't
really played that much. I'm not I would start him like,
you're not going.
Speaker 6 (17:06):
Anywhere with Daniel Jones.
Speaker 7 (17:07):
You're not winning, you're not saving your job with Daniel Jones.
I think you got to see what Anthony Richardson has
and if he think or swim baby.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
When when Jim Ersay passed away, I think one of
the things his three daughters want to create is stability,
because Jim, as great as he was, could be very
impulsive in his later years. So I don't think they're
I think they're going to keep Chris Ballard. I think
he's gonna get if he hasn't a big contract, long contract.
I think they're gonna keep Shane Steichen. Steichen and Ballard
(17:36):
are they They support each other, and I think the
three we talked about ownership today. I think the three
daughters of Ersay are going to create a very stable environment,
maybe compensating for some of their dad's impulsive nature. So
I don't think Shane steike Shane Stikeen would not be
unemployed long. He would get a job. He's really good.
(17:57):
They are just trying to bail out like Andrew Luck retiring.
They've never I mean that's just like right before a season.
They're still trying to figure that out.
Speaker 7 (18:06):
I might as well last get to humor me Shane
Steikin or Zach Taylor.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Shane Steiking Oh okay, I don't think he's one of them.
Speaker 6 (18:16):
He doesn't have any playoff wins.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
No, but I think he is viewed as somebody who
literally made Jalen Hurts was struggling as a pro. Go
back to Justin Herbert's rookie year when he broke all
the records. Who was the coach, who was the coordinator.
Go look at Jalen Hurt's best year. Who is the coordinator?
And by the way, he's Indiana is viable.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
Go to the Gardner Minshew year so and.
Speaker 7 (18:43):
By the way, who you got win in that division?
I know it's kind of topsy turvy, but who want
to Tennessee?
Speaker 5 (18:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (18:49):
Interesting, I'm going Jacks. We should all my tips into
the Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 1 (18:55):
Two organizations in the NFL. Might as well have my
debit card. They've taken so much money from Atlanta and Jacksonville.
Oh what's the point.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
Here's my debit card. Go ahead and take it.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
Yeah, just just just take three hundred bucks out a
day going It's.
Speaker 6 (19:09):
Like giving your kid.
Speaker 7 (19:10):
You know, Hey, you want to go on a shopping
spree at seven eleven, Go for it.
Speaker 6 (19:13):
Go crazy? All right? Next up, let's go to Bengals.
Speaker 7 (19:16):
Big topic today, Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 6 (19:17):
Well, how about this.
Speaker 7 (19:18):
They took Schamar Stuart with the seventeenth overall pick in
the draft, ed rusher who had a career four and
a half.
Speaker 6 (19:25):
Sacks at Texas A and M. But he's got the
skills and the measurements.
Speaker 7 (19:28):
Anyways, he's the only first round or not signed Colin.
Now he's been working out at Texas A and M facilities,
and a lot of people are saying, well, he's not signed,
can he go back to college. Their head coach, Mike
Elko says there are no intentions of Stuart playing for
them this year. I don't know what no intentions means.
(19:49):
That's not to me a firm nobody Again, Cincinnati.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
Have I have told you, you know, there's this team
in the NFL that sets history. They draft a guy
and he goes back to What a shock that its Cincinnati.
Speaker 6 (20:04):
Jets would have to be a consideration for that way.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
No, Jets have spent money, they just haven't spent it smartly.
They spent money on Aaron Rodgers don't spend money. Jets
spend money, Dolphins spend money. The Bengals don't spend any
money of all the organization. If I would have guessed
somebody gets drafted and says, this is nonsense, I'm going
back to college, I would have guessed Cincinnati.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
Ridiculous. It's bad.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
Final story, Zach Taylor has to overcome it, driv into
work every day.
Speaker 6 (20:30):
Yeah, luckily he's got Joe Burrow. Anyways, finally in the NBA.
Speaker 7 (20:34):
Interesting tidbit from your friend Charles Barkley here. So the
Thunder won the championship obviously, and Barkley, I'm not allowed
to say anything bad about him. Barkley believes there's only
two teams that can hang with the Thunder in the West.
Speaker 6 (20:49):
Here we go.
Speaker 10 (20:51):
I said, nobody can beat to Oklahoma City Thunder. I said,
Dever got a shot at it, but that's it. Now.
I think the Rockets got a shot at it, but
they don't be the favorites for the next three or
four years. They're young, they're talented, they're very whale coach. Now,
the Rockets have had a great summer. They've had a
(21:12):
great summer, so have the Nuggets. But those are the
top three teams in the West right now.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
Yeah, I totally agree.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
I'll take the Nuggets one, Rockets two, OKC three.
Speaker 6 (21:26):
Nobody's beating them four times.
Speaker 7 (21:27):
The Indiana Basers, historic underdogs, pushed them to Game seven.
Speaker 6 (21:32):
Let's get off this. They're unbelievable.
Speaker 7 (21:35):
Like two years ago, Nuggets won the championship.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
I remember I fell for the Nuggets. I thought the
Nuggets could be the spurg That was on me.
Speaker 6 (21:41):
But then last year Celtics. We said they were like
the most loaded roster ever. They're bringing back everybody like
this is just how the league is now.
Speaker 7 (21:49):
This idea that, okay, I mean we should do a
friendly wager.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
Nah, let's be honest. You're right.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
If Halliburton doesn't get hurt in Game seven, that is
a coin flip.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
I agree. I think I would have taken Indiana. Well, seriously,
they looked great.
Speaker 6 (22:04):
It was only one quarter, but they look great. This
idea that, okay, see some kind of juggered out.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
And by the way, Sga had a great year. He's
a great kid. He's not an all time great player.
He's not as good as Korean his prime Lebron and
his prime Michael kolbe Scheck.
Speaker 7 (22:17):
But we gotta be careful what we say about Charles Barkley.
Nobody wants to get thrown through a window or anything.
All right, let's just settle down.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
Well, who said that?
Speaker 6 (22:25):
I did?
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Charles? I like Charles, I know you do. You've you've
alienated him for so long.
Speaker 6 (22:31):
I don't think I think it takes her have been
weak this Oklahoma City, come on, are they that good? Colling?
Speaker 7 (22:36):
No, they needed seven to get my Denver in the
second round. Denver with hobbl Darren Gordon, Michael Porter Junior
was on Denver.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
Denver's might pick to win it next year. Denver is
gonna meet Houston in the Western Conference finals. I like
that Denver and Yokich carry him. And then I think,
you know, Halliburn, I don't know in the East, Nick,
I mean, I mean, I don't know. Orlando is my
Orlando's in the Eastern Conference finals.
Speaker 6 (23:00):
I don't know Knicks Rockets in the finals. That's gonna
be good.
Speaker 3 (23:05):
Nick.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
If you told me Nick's magic in the East, I'd
buy that. Without Haliburton and Tatum, I'd buy that.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
Yeah, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
Jmck with the news, well that's the news, and thanks
for stopping back the herd Line News.
Speaker 3 (23:20):
Seen a little news here. I love. We had a
Steelers writer. The Faye Boy was on. Mike de Faiboy
was on earlier today.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
And my lead today was it's not that I don't
like the TJ.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
Watt deal.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
I just don't like it how the Steeters have completely
prioritized defense for four years and the defense isn't even
that great. T J. Watt is for the defense isn't
that great? We had a graphic earlier today. If you
go to the last five playoff games for the Steelers,
and they've led the NFL in defensive spending four years
in a row, and they will lead it next year
because of the TJ.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
Watt contract. Their defense isn't great now.
Speaker 1 (23:57):
It's gotten better over the last several years, but they're
off has gotten worse for our radio audience. In the
last five playoff games dating back to twenty seventeen, they've
given up forty five, forty eight, forty two, thirty one,
and twenty eight. So they lead the league in defensive
spending over the last half decade, but they don't have
a dominating defense. So I don't mind the TJ. Watt contract.
He's a great player. He's an all timer, first ballot
(24:19):
Hall of Fame, as his brother was great player. But
it's the fact that you let Minka Fitzpatrick go and
instead of just getting draft picks, you sign Oh past
his prime Jalen Ramsey, who's seven million dollars more per year.
So if you're going to move off defensive players, just
get the draft picks. Don't don't go back to overspending
on somebody who's passed their prime.
Speaker 3 (24:41):
So TJ.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
Watt is toward the end of his prime, but he's
still great. But here's Mike Fiebo de Faibo on the
urgency for Pittsburgh now to win this year with this
contract for three years.
Speaker 11 (24:53):
Did Mike Tomlin get the most out of Antonio Brown
or did he enable him? And you know, we saw
history in some senses repeat itself with George Pickens. You
go back to where this whole postseason losing streak began.
Le'Veon Bell reported late for that playoff game. Like Tomlin
always has a saying, I don't treat everybody equally, but
(25:14):
I treat everybody fairly. But when you're treating people on
different levels, that is unfair to the guys who are
doing the right thing.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
And that was in a response to my question, is
Tomlin so pro player?
Speaker 3 (25:27):
Does it get in the way?
Speaker 1 (25:29):
And as Mike says, it kind of goes back to
l'vy and Bell, Antonio Brown, George Pickens is that it's
sort of ice cream for breakfast parent where he gives
the kids a lot of space. That's fine with ninety
five percent of your roster, but there's always some squorely
guys in the NFL, or you know, in any pro sport.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
They're young, they're rich, they've got.
Speaker 1 (25:49):
Freedom, they've got a lot of time in their hands,
and they make mistakes. So, you know, I do think
they become very permissive with players. And again most TJ.
Speaker 3 (25:58):
Watt doesn't. It's okay, you know.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
For for the kid they draft out of West Virginia.
The first round kid was it, Zach Frasier, the center
out of West Virginia. He is a dog. That guy
is great. For most of your players, it's fine. You know,
Hines Ward is going to show up every day and
put the work in right like. But for a lot
of young guys, they don't. So and and here's Mike
again on the urgent. Now, so they sign Aaron Rodgers,
(26:23):
and you know, so they're they're kind of ozempic. Their
answer to their unbalanced diet. They've gone heavy carbs, the
league has gone to protein. Their answer is Aaron Rodgers
were going all in and might respond to that.
Speaker 11 (26:36):
They know that people are getting impatient. They want success
and they haven't had it, you know. And I just
look at the fact that there have been in the
history of the NFL, in the Super Bowl era, quarterbacks
over forty have won to combine twelve games in the playoffs.
Tom Brady has ten. Every other quarterback has two combined.
(26:56):
So it's Tom Brady and it's everybody else. And here
the are throwing their face behind assumed to be forty
two year old Aaron Rodgers to try to snap that skid.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
In a division with arguably the best owned, well run,
one of the best coached and great quarterbacks in the
league in Baltimore. So the Baltimore screws it all up. Baltimore,
Steve Bushatti and John Harbaugh and Lamar Jackson, they're such
a gold standard of how to run an operation that
Pittsburgh if they were in the AFC South or if
(27:30):
they were in the NFC South, they can win that division.
But when you're in a division with Baltimore and then
VISIVI I compare you the Steelers to Baltimore, and I
look how Baltimore spends money on offense, takes big swings
in free agency, moves off defensive players, really good players
to make sure their own line is right, or they
(27:52):
can get Derrick Henry. Do you think Derrick Henry is
this good on every team in the league, or do
you think going to Baltimore with Lamar Jackson, this staff
and this old line elevates and lengthens the greatness of
Derek Henry.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
I'd argue it's the latter.
Speaker 1 (28:09):
All right, Tomorrow's headlines Today, my favorite segment every week
is coming up.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd weekdays
in noon. Easter not a em Pacific.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
All right, j Mack. What a busy, busy week we've had.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
Everybody thinks it's the the dold rooms this time of
the year, but we have had.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
We've had a lot happen.
Speaker 6 (28:32):
Starting with your flight SNAPHU earlier this week.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
Huh, so it should be noted.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
I felt terrible about that and then I called you
and I'm like, dude, I can't get out of here.
My boss the next day was in New York. He
tried to get out, got on a plane, went on
the tarmac, came back in, got off the plane, waited
five hours.
Speaker 6 (28:51):
Oh five hours at an airport.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
Well, I told you before, it's very in the West coast.
If you go to the airport and it's nothing but
sunny sky's, your plane will take off and you'll fly
on the East coast. You could be in Rhode Island
or a state and it's perfectly sunny, but there's a
lightning storm, or there's a there's a there's a front
a state away and you're not taking off, and that's,
you know, just the reality of you get you get
(29:14):
more intense storms out east.
Speaker 6 (29:16):
I'm sure you're.
Speaker 7 (29:16):
Hanging out in the lounge, right You get the credit
card and you can pay fifty bucks and you go.
Speaker 6 (29:20):
In the lounge, unlimited food.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
Internet, No, no, no, that's a lot.
Speaker 6 (29:24):
People hang out at the airport and those lounges.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
I'm in row thirty one. By the way, Rory McIlroy
is now six back of the lead at the Open
in Northern Ireland, behind Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick. So six back
you could listen. You get you get to that style course.
You can make up ground pretty quick. You get a birdie,
you can make up strokes pretty quick.
Speaker 5 (29:44):
All right.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
We do it every week.
Speaker 1 (29:45):
At this time the former newspaperman comes up with headlines
tomorrow's headlines today, what's the headline that I can't remember
an opening game in college football that felt this big? Yeah,
oh Io State against Texas. Sark and Ryan Day, Ryan
Day proved his value, Sark, this is a big one.
Speaker 3 (30:09):
They're all headlines.
Speaker 6 (30:10):
Well, obviously, this is a great start of the season.
Speaker 7 (30:12):
The game's on Fox August thirtieth schedule year, Saturday.
Speaker 6 (30:16):
Around this one, Ohio States favored.
Speaker 7 (30:18):
The headline will be Ouch Manning Buck Guys. Put Arch
in full body Manning cast I'm going with the buck
Geys here.
Speaker 6 (30:29):
I know a lot of people are saying, hey, arch Man,
he's going to be the truth. I don't know.
Speaker 7 (30:33):
I saw one report that said he was the tenth
best quarterback in college football this season. Meanwhile, Ohio States
bringing back styles All American linebacker Caleb Downs top ten pick,
maybe the best defensive player in college football. Colin Texas
only returns three offensive starters from a year ago.
Speaker 6 (30:49):
This is going to be difficult.
Speaker 7 (30:50):
And oh, by the way, little X factor, if you will,
the new defensive coordinator for the Buckeyes, it's the rocket
scientist Matt Patricia.
Speaker 6 (30:58):
Remember that guy. He's looking for a career rejuvenation. He's
got all summer to cook up stuff for Arch.
Speaker 7 (31:04):
I think this is the Buck guys, almost to the
point where people are like, ooh, I don't know about
arch is a pro because I think it'll be a
tough co for Texas. I would take Ohios date here
by two touchdowns. I will remind people Texas is gonna
be fine. The games after this are straight up cupcakes,
so Arch will be fine. But this is just going
to be a welcome to college football, buddy.
Speaker 6 (31:23):
This is the big time.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
Yeah, I mean it's there's such NFL factories. It is
interesting when I look at this game. The one advantage
Ohio State does have there at home, so Arch. But
Arch is such a mature kid. But you know, your
first big start is on the road at the Horseshoe.
It's going to be called the Hype against the Horseshoe.
It's going to be an Alzheimer Tomorrow's headlines. Today it
(31:48):
was SECA Day Media week. This is always a hornet's
nest down there. This is going to be Calin de
Boor and Kirby Puck, Kirby Smart and Brian Kelly and
Lane Kiffen and here sark. Boy, there's some big time
coaches now in the SEC. What is the headline?
Speaker 6 (32:06):
Well, one of.
Speaker 7 (32:07):
The smart people who I lean on for college football
a lot, he's close to the business, said you schedule
a national championship. Jay, just remember that it's all about
the schedule. The headline for the SEC will be who
let the Dogs stay at home?
Speaker 6 (32:22):
Let the Dogs?
Speaker 7 (32:23):
I got Georgia winning the SEC. Colin I looked at
the schedule for the Bulldogs. Are you ready for this?
They do not play LSU, They host Alabama, and the
week before that game they have a bye, so they'll
be very fresh. Other two good teams Texas guess where
that game's at.
Speaker 6 (32:39):
Yep, you guessed it.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
Georgia.
Speaker 6 (32:40):
Guess where the Old Miss game is? Yes? Also Georgia.
Speaker 7 (32:44):
Their toughest games are all at home. I know there's
a lot of questions about Gunner Stockton. He didn't show
much against Notre Dame in the playoffs. You know, Okay, fine,
it was a tough spot start for him getting thrown
in there.
Speaker 6 (32:56):
He doesn't need to be great.
Speaker 7 (32:58):
This is a loaded team, all their tough opponents at home.
Speaker 6 (33:02):
I think Georgia runs the table in the SEC.
Speaker 1 (33:06):
Runs the table. That's not Yeah, that's interesting. I don't
know much about the quarterback, but that's interesting.
Speaker 5 (33:13):
All right.
Speaker 1 (33:13):
Tomorrow's headlines today a lot of speculation about the Lakers
and Lebron James. I've had a lot of opinions this week.
What say you, yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 7 (33:23):
I don't know whether or not the full for the
Lebron wants out all is nonsense? Or is it just
like you said the summer doldrums, the headline for Lebron
and the Lakers will be the billion dollar baby King
chucks up Hollywood ending. I think Lebron is staying, I'm
sorry for the whole baby you know. I don't Lebron
(33:44):
is a baby's whining. I think Lebron stays this is
much ado about nothing. This is as simply, Hey, you
guys didn't show me respect. You're catering too much to Luca.
Speaker 6 (33:52):
What about me? I'm the King.
Speaker 7 (33:54):
I brought you guys the title. I was second team
All NBA last year. All that stuff is true. Lebron
also got the coach he wanted in Reddick. They drafted
his son, Ronnie. I don't think Lebron's going anywhere. It's
a fun middle of July topic to kind of satiate
all those reporters who kept telling you Colin for weeks, Oh,
this is going to be the biggest offseason since twenty twenty.
Speaker 6 (34:17):
It's just gonna be chaos. Everybody's moving around. None of
that stuff's going to be remotely true.
Speaker 7 (34:22):
I think, without question, Lebron stays with the Lakers.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
Yeah, I think NBA free agency not dead, but I
think because of the new aprons, I think NBA free
I think the NFL free agency is much more interesting
going forward. And I told Adam Silver, I love stars moving.
He doesn't. And so I think the new apron is
built for you to keep your draft well develop and
keep your own players. I think NBA free agency is
(34:48):
kind of dead one hundred percent.
Speaker 7 (34:49):
Did you see the Phoenix Suns owner with this Bradley
Beal move, which is stupid and handcuffs you for five years. Right,
They're out of the second apron just by doing that deal.
That's all they wanted to do is avoid one hundred
seventy five million dollars, And like, that's just not smart
team building. But it's the new NBA. Adam Silver, you
sure we want this?
Speaker 6 (35:07):
Are you sure?
Speaker 3 (35:08):
I don't? Tomorrow's headlines today?
Speaker 1 (35:10):
What's gonna be the headline for the second half of
the baseball season? Dodger struggling Yankees probably need a little help.
Speaker 3 (35:18):
What do you make of it.
Speaker 6 (35:19):
Yankees needs some help. I didn't realize Detroit was as good.
Speaker 7 (35:22):
Yesterday's guest was like, yeah, the Tigers, they're winning, They're
coming out all right.
Speaker 6 (35:27):
The headline four the.
Speaker 7 (35:28):
Yankees will be Yankee Doodle done?
Speaker 12 (35:33):
Did it?
Speaker 7 (35:33):
Bronx Bombers are back of Roney, Colin, we heard Jeter,
we heard a Rod talk about it. I believe the
Yanks are gonna be going back to the World Series.
I hope people are down on them right now. The
Red Sox breathing down their neck. Only one game back. Obviously,
Detroit has been exceptional. We've got the Astros. But Colin,
I look at run differential and it just jumps off
the page. The Yankees by a mile, okay, plus one
(35:57):
eleven Detroit, which has a better record way back they
were at eighty seven.
Speaker 6 (36:01):
This is a Yankee machine.
Speaker 7 (36:02):
I know some people are criticizing their starters this weekend.
I'm sure you saw. It's just like, who are these guys?
This is not an imposing starting lineup. The Yankees are
going to be fine, and like you said, I expect
them to make moves. If Jeter and a Rod are
publicly All Star weekend talking about it. I think the
pressure's on Cashman to make a move.
Speaker 3 (36:21):
Finally, the Open.
Speaker 1 (36:23):
Tomorrow's headlines today there's Rory Rory. What's your headline for
the Open Championship?
Speaker 6 (36:29):
So you know, obviously you're a big Rory guy. You
are hyping it.
Speaker 7 (36:32):
He's doing excellent well that we came up with an
amazing headline for you at the Open.
Speaker 6 (36:36):
Rory's headline will b Rory Rory.
Speaker 3 (36:40):
Hallelujah.
Speaker 7 (36:41):
His truth is marching on down the Fairway. We are
all rooting for your guy, Rory maclory. Maybe I'll come
on the show next week. If he's able to capture
the Open Championship should be a good one. I would
agree with you. He is a captivating watch. People just
gravitate toward him. I remember when he first broke on
the scene, he felt like it was going to be
him and Tiger going Tottols forever. And then obviously Tiger
(37:04):
kind of went sideways, and Rory hasn't been able to
consistently been dominant, but he's starting to play better now
and I'm I'm certainly rooting for him this weekend.
Speaker 1 (37:11):
Well, you know, it's funny Tiger was so dominant. People
compare everybody to Tiger. And I've said this, go look
at Phil Mickelson's career just if Tiger didn't exist. It's
like a top five career. Rory Bryce and to Shambeau
Brooks Koepka. These guys are unbelievable ald timers. But you
know it's like Brady Brady at forty four was better
(37:35):
than everybody not named Josh Allen and Mahomes. And so
I think the kid that came on from the Athletics
said there's twelve wins for quarterbacks over forty Brady's got ten.
All the other quarterbacks have two. Say you can't count
Brady's the outler. Take Brady out. Farv was pretty good
in his forties. He was pretty good. Warren Moon was
(37:57):
pretty good in his forties. So my take is just
take Tyger, you're out. Rory's had an unbelievable career, Deshambo,
who's like reinvented himself. Philm Mickelson has had an eye.
Let me guess this. Just look this up. How many
tour wins does Mickolson have and how many majors I'm
gonna guess. I mean, just again, Tiger doesn't exist. I
(38:19):
bet you Mickelson has all time tour wins. I'm gonna okay,
and then this major is everything else. I'm gonna guess
that's a tough one. Forty eight, forty five. Oh wow,
majors six boom.
Speaker 6 (38:41):
I didn't know you were such a golf guy. Oh
that's right. You've been playing a lot of golf in
shy in a windy city.
Speaker 3 (38:46):
How do I already have three golf rounds lined up?
Next time I go on VAC.
Speaker 6 (38:50):
Are you serious? By the way, what clubs are you
playing with?
Speaker 3 (38:54):
The kind of hit the ball long wing study?
Speaker 7 (38:56):
Well, next time you're out here, we'll go to top golf.
I like to grip it and rip it. All I
do is swing for the fence. I just want to
whack golf as far as I get.
Speaker 6 (39:04):
You don't go to top golf.
Speaker 3 (39:07):
Here was Rory after his round today. He's six back.
Speaker 12 (39:12):
I'm excited for the opportunity. I didn't have that opportunity
six years ago. So, you know, to play an extra
two days in this atmosphere, in front of these crowds,
you know, I'm I'm very excited for that, and I
feel like my game's definitely good enough to make a run.
It was twenty years ago that I played the North
of Ireland here, and never in my wildest dreams that
(39:33):
I think that I'd be coming back as a Grand
Slam champion with the support of a nation behind me,
trying to win an Open championship.
Speaker 3 (39:43):
I find that guy so easy to root for. Oh
my god.
Speaker 1 (39:46):
And I'll tell you this, Augusta. I mean, there's a
lot of great golf tournaments. Augusta and the British Open
are my favorites. The British Open just looks so different.
It looks it's so you know, you have to get
up early to watch it, and august has just given
me so much the great moments. The US Open, I'm
partial to Pebble Beach. Like when it's at Pebble Beach,
(40:06):
it's literally like a painting. For the weekend, you're watching
a painting Pinehurst. There's a lot of great but there
are certain tournaments that matter more. Augusta one British Open too,
because Augusta's on it a better time, and then any
US Open at Pebble Beach. But there are golfers that
I'm really fascinated with, Brooks Kepka. I thought Brooks Koepka
(40:28):
had a chance to be like Mickelson forty five fifty
tour wins, and then Bryce and de Shamba was kind
of sticky and unlikable, and Deshambo is sort of elevated,
and Brooks Kopka has gone a little sideway.
Speaker 3 (40:38):
So we'll keep our eye on that.
Speaker 7 (40:39):
Yeah, by the way, so uh, you know, let's say
you want to take me out on the golf course,
and you can invite any two golfers to join us.
Speaker 6 (40:46):
Who rounds out the force? Um, it's fine. Obos.
Speaker 1 (40:54):
So if I could golf you and I and rounds
out the four or some how about Steph Curry because
on a golf.
Speaker 6 (41:04):
Course, people, he's awesome at golf.
Speaker 1 (41:06):
And if you again, I get unfiltered Steph Curry and
Elon Musk.
Speaker 6 (41:15):
Because he's so wacko, did not I don't I mean.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
He would tell you, I mean, what's going to happen
in the future. Maybe Jeff Bezos, he'd be he'd be
less distracted Bezos and Steph Curry.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
All right, we're done for today.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
We will have a great weekend at UFC three eighteen.
Can't wait to watch. Thanks for Dana White for stopping
by and uh as Oh it's been hurd
