Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Well, I mean college football over the next week is
going to be crazytown. Lane Kiffin leaving old mister LSU
was crazytown. It is our number three in a Monday.
Miami may not get in Texas to me beat three
teams that were ranked in the top ten when they

(00:47):
played them. And this is where I have a real issue,
or I guess a real concern. I'm going to bring
an urban meyer three national championships Florida, Ohio state seventeen years. Okay,
so I'm going to throw this at you. Miami can
say we beat Notre Dame headhead. We have four common opponents,

(01:09):
we beat three of them worse than you. We have
a better defense and a better passing game. And by
the way, we scheduled an SEC team, we beat them too.
Florida just unraveled. And when we beat Florida State. They
were good, and you know this, teams fluctuate based on
injuries and momentum. I think Miami's got a real argument.

(01:31):
And after watching a Hammer, which I thought was a
solid team pit, I'm sitting there looking on the internet
and I'm like, I don't know. I think i'd have
a real complaint. What do you make of Miami's argument
over Notre Dames.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
I wasn't able to watch it, but I'm like you,
I did not expect that. I thought Pitt would be
in a street fight with them, especially in the cold
weather at home, and I have a lot of respect
for Miami. They did not look like that early in
the year. Carson Beck was throwing inner sheet after an interception.
But I'm going to go back and watch it. I
watched the highlights, so I agree. I think there's certainly
a fight from Miami to get in there. And I

(02:10):
don't know if it's time to go into this call.
I just you know, I'm a I mentioned this to you.
I think the committee's got to go away. I don't
there's a way to get around this committee. And I'm
not taking a shot at the committee. You have Chris
Fahlak you got the Bear, you got mark Ingram, you
got Matt Liiner, Brady Quinn, urban Meyer. There's a bunch
of national titles. Heisman's a bunch of football guys. That's

(02:32):
what they do. Chris Faleek is unbelievable what he watches.
And we can't get it right. We are in a
I mean we're down there in fistfights in that green
room getting ready to go on Big Noon because everybody's
got and we can't agree. So how in the world
are Athletic Director's Conference committe How are they coming up
with who's going to be in this in the playoffs?

(02:54):
So I'm a big believer in the four four two
two one one that was presented earlier about the committee
goes away, the conferences take care of it and that way.
I want to add this. I know I'm talking a
lot here, but how in the world if I'm Brian Day,
I go talk to Ross the ad of Ohio State,
and I said, get that Texas game up our schedule

(03:14):
next year. We're not playing it.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
That's right.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Give me a good Give me a good, Max School,
because why wouldn't we play that.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
Game right now?

Speaker 3 (03:22):
If I Chris Oconti CDC and Sarkesian there's a chance
they're going to be left out of the playoff because
they played Ohio State Week one. Why would you do that?
So we're getting ready to colin arguably the worst non
conference games in the history of college football, unless something's
done where they make those games count and don't get

(03:42):
penalized for it.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
No, I mean, I think it's time to get rid
of committees. I think you're right because I when I'm
watching them blowout Pitt And I thought cold Weather pit
good fistfight no way, And I'm like, man, they're going
to have an argument. I want to talk about. It's interesting.
So Ohio State is favored, you know, by five six
points against Indiana. I know who the better team is.

(04:07):
But I'm thinking, if I'm Ohio State, I just come
out of this emotional peak with Michigan and it's twenty
twenty five, I don't care about Indiana. I don't care
about that. I want to get healthy. I want to
be healthy and ready for the playoff. I think it's
a huge disadvantage for Ohio State. I mean, I know
they have better players. Do you think they'll be a
letdown for the buck Eyes and they could get beat.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
I don't think so. I think the game was that
was not a game where it went down to the
last game. I was there. Obviously, Ohio State handled them.
I mean they handled them. I made a comment before
the games scored three touchdowns, you win the game because
that's how good Ohio States defense. And I think the
Wolverine offense is not very good. I think someday they
might be with this quarterback, they're certainly not now. I

(04:53):
don't believe that. I believe that coach. He's been very conscientious.
They've had a relatively easy schedule coming up. You know,
you know, the quarterback is only thrown going into the
game Colin, He's only thrown twenty five passes in the
fourth quarter. So this team is not spent. This team
actually is on you know, they r on a pitch
count pretty much all year. They huddle, they don't go fast,

(05:16):
they're only running. They're running twenty plays fewer per game
than we did in twenty and eighteen. On defense, going
into the Wolverine game, they've played the fewest snaps of
all the major schools in the country on defense, So
this team is not spent. They're gonna be healthy going
this game.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Okay, so listen, college football schedule or it's calendar is weird.
So I don't love Lane kiffen bailing on the players.
He wanted to coach the team. But there's no way
old missus Gan Lechen have that job. That's ridiculous. But
I mean it's weird, Like I always kind of fall

(05:55):
into this. You hire Lane Kiffin, it's not because of
charm school every I mean, he got fired on the tarmac,
you know, Tennessee. They wanted to burn his house down.
It's like, listen, I argue this urban that Ole miss
has mostly been irrelevant outside of Eli and archs manning
that if you would have signed up for this, if

(06:16):
I would have said to you, okay, Lane Kifvin's gonna
come to your program, you're gonna have your best season ever.
Everybody's talking about you, number number one offense in the country.
He's going to bail you on you and take you
off at the end. Would just sign up for it.
So everybody, everybody in the state would have signed up
for right.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Of course they would else and you know it's unprecedented.

Speaker 4 (06:38):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
I actually was texting back and forth with Lane where
they let me when I left Utah went to Florida.
They let me come back and coach in the VCS
Bowl Game, first time a non VCS school made it.
I met with the players. They were good enough to say,
come on back. This is a whole different animal. He's
going to an in conference rival and he's walked out
on players that gave him everything they got. So I'm torn.

(07:02):
I mean, I still I was saying he's going to
stay for that reason that you can't laying differen is
not going to make a decision for money. I know
I don't know him that well, but I know well
enough he's a He's more competitive than he is worried
about money. In his heart. He must have think it's
going to be an easier path or a better path
to win a national title. That's the only thing I
can think of to be able to walk away. And

(07:24):
I mean, how do you do? I don't think he
even man with the players. I heard the ad won't
let him. They just want the best season in the
history of goal missed. That team is prepared to go
make a run deep into the playoffs, and and he's gone.
I mean, I had mixed when I when I saw
that happen. My heart hurts for those players and Colin,
A bunch of coaches got on that plane.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
That's listen, it's it's I said, I've compared college football
to bitcoin. Don't buy it if you're not ready for
an unregulated mess wild plugs you. You love it one day,
you hate it, the next you hire Lane Kiffen. It
always ends bizarrely and so okay. So I didn't listen

(08:10):
nothing against Texas, A and M. But I looked at
their schedule. They got a break. They didn't play Bama, Georgia,
OL Miss or Oklahoma. They got So when you played Texas,
you better win. And I don't care where the game's at.
I watched them get into a hole against South Carolina.
I thought they were a fun watch. I didn't think
they were a special team. So now Texas, I would

(08:31):
put Texas in. I would what would you do with Texas?

Speaker 3 (08:36):
Well, there's six teams right now on that darn bubble,
And then you say Texas goes in the Notre Dame's out.
You know it's gonna be a tougherference. I know, I know,
I'll answering your question. I don't know, I don't know.
I think Texas deserves me in the playoff, and I
would not penalize that loss against Ohio State. You can't
do that. You can't or you're getting ready to see

(08:58):
old dominions gonna become a favorite of all. These big
teams play our teams like that because they need. No
one cares Indiana is No one's saying a word about
Indiana's non conference schedule, no one yet. Texas made a
decision to get on a plane and go play the
number one team in the country or to number two
team in the country on the road, and they got
beaten a tough game, and now there's a chance because

(09:19):
of that they'll be because if they didn't play that game,
we won't be outing this conversation. Of course they'd be in. Yeah,
of course, of course they'd be in.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
I'm with you. I think it's unfair. And the other
thing is it was on the road. We didn't know
at the time Ohio State's the best defense in the decade.
We didn't know that, so, I mean, we just didn't know.
It's on the road. And the other thing is they
were breaking in four new offensive linemen, so it was
I mean, I mean, we were saying how good Ohio

(09:50):
State was. We were like, we had a couple of
Ohio State guys that we thought as freshmen and sophomores
can start in the NFL right now. So, I don't know.
I I'm with you on this. I think Miami's got
a totally legitimate argument, and I think Texas may get hosed.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
I'm sorry, yeah, I'm worried about it. Let me let
me let me leave you this thought. And Jerry Donardo
from Big Btn gave it to me yesterday. It's one
of the most profound things I ever heard. It's the
only multi billion dollar business in the history of our
country that's being run by volunteers. Think about that. You
have a search, you have a committee, they're all volunteers.

(10:31):
And Jerry told me. Coacho told me stories where ads
would tell him that they would have like an intern
come in and watch films because they're so busy whatever
jobs they have, and they would help. So you have
volunteers that are getting interns to help them rank teams.
I'm not saying they'll do it. I don't know. I
just this is what Jared DeNardo told me. The only business,

(10:53):
multi bill b billion dollar business that you have a
group of volunteers are making decisions. I just think it's
got to go away and it's all playing. Let the
conferences handle it. It's a play in business and that way.
The best teams are in the conference and they do
it on the field, are in the in the in
the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
Okay, well you're going to be at that Ohio State
Indiana game.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
You're right there.

Speaker 1 (11:19):
Yeah, be a good game to go to. I'm actually
busy that day, but a big I'll wash it on TV.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
You know, I stood next to two teams. I just Indiana.
I love their coach. I love the quarterback. Mendoza's got
to start playing better. He's had a couple of bad games.
But Ohio State, man, just that's one of those. I
didn't see it. I didn't know it was gonna be
like that because they lost so many good players. That's
one of those LSU looking teams back like and I
was at Florida. I mean that does a great looking team.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
Yeah, they're they're big, they're big anywhere, good seeing coach,
good sea color. Yeah, I mean, Ohio State's better than Indiana.
By the way. Indiana's out of conference Old Dominion Indiana
State and Kennesaw State. Not great, not great. Miami scheduled

(12:08):
Florida and beat Florida State in Conference one. Florida State
was pretty good. From Florida State's got you know NFL athletes,
it matters. I'm always going to defend scheduling tough games.
You schedule an SEC team, you go on the road,
I'm always going to defend you. I use this metaphor.
You you're at a Bar's a beautiful woman. You're a guy.

(12:30):
You walk up, You're gracious, you're classy. You ask her out.
She says, no, I don't think less of you. I
think more of the ask most most guys, they're not
going to go up there, you know, Like it's like
you scheduled Ohio State at home. It's a close it
was a fourteen sevens close game. I don't know. I
don't think less of you. I know a lot of teams.

(12:54):
I think Michigan would like to have been in a
touchdown game against Ohio State and.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
They were at home. It's the Be sure to catch

Speaker 1 (13:44):
J Max in a good mood, brought pretty let it off.
And Austin Reeves looks like Luca I listen to. Austin
Reeves can score. And the Lakers are a lot of fun.
They're a very good offensive team. And we you know, listen,
we talk about NFL coaches. AJ Reddick knows what he's
doing on offense. When you watch the Lakers, the spacing,
the pace and offensively, they're a very gifted team. You know,

(14:08):
you got a couple of icons. Austin Reeves pretty cool
with an unranked, an undrafted guy or like Yokich second round.
I mean, there's a lot of global talent for basketball
in our own backyard. Oklahoma kid undrafted and that. By
the way, he's been a grinder. He didn't walk into
this league doing twenty a game. I mean he has
worked and worked, and the Lakers have been patient. Austin Reeves,

(14:31):
I'll give you credit, like you a little bit of
a gunner, but I understand he doesn't want to play
a lot of defense. But Austin Reeves deserves credit. He
has worked his butt off to be a really good pro.
That is all work in the gym. It's you know,
and I'm saying he's not talented, but go look at
his averages. He's gotten like eighteen percent better every single year. Total.

(14:53):
Mad respect for Austin Reeves having a great start to
the season. Jmack with the News.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
No, no, this is the herd Line news.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
All right.

Speaker 7 (15:03):
I know it's a big college football day, but there
is some breaking NFL news. Shedeur Sanders, who was I thought,
you know, mid but yesterday he's gonna get his.

Speaker 8 (15:12):
Third straight start Colin.

Speaker 7 (15:13):
They just announced that uh Stefanski will get an extended
look for the rest of the season. I don't know
if that means he's starting every game, but they're gonna be.

Speaker 8 (15:21):
Looking at him.

Speaker 7 (15:22):
He again, he wasn't great against the Niners. But as
we predicted, Salah was gonna dial up.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
Some stuff away blitz No on the special teams, I
mean they whipped on them. Looked like a high school
drop plant. That was a huge That's just not on Sdur.
He was fine. He was more than fine, more than
good enough. They didn't do much for him defensively, and
their special teams stunk and brock.

Speaker 7 (15:44):
Party did also hit a dance which we won't get
into because you're.

Speaker 8 (15:47):
Mister anti rock party. Anyways.

Speaker 7 (15:49):
Uh, here's Sdour after the loss, talking about playing well.

Speaker 5 (15:55):
So we lost saw you know how you play well.
It's definitely things on film. You know, I'm gonna look
back and want to get back and want to see.
But at least moving forward, I know what we could
do differently, going about the week and being able, you know,
to get fully, fully prepared.

Speaker 3 (16:16):
For every possibility.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
You know what I he last couple of weeks. He
sounds humbled. He knows how hard it is. There's a
lot of responsibility, and again, we got to be fair
about this, just like the Miami Hurricanes. We got to
be fair. He's now playing and he's been better than
a lot of people thought. He would be. He's more
than capable.

Speaker 8 (16:34):
He's been more than solid. They do have a layup.

Speaker 7 (16:36):
Next week against the Titans in a game you love
to talk corner TV games, I mean Browns Titans.

Speaker 8 (16:42):
Battle for the number one pick.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
Essentially no layups in the NFL. No layups.

Speaker 7 (16:46):
Sorry, let's move on to the Houston Texans.

Speaker 8 (16:49):
Colin, now you know this was an interesting game. I
initially gave.

Speaker 7 (16:52):
Out Colt here, and then after I found out Daniel
Jones was playing with a broken leg, I slipped flopped
and went and went with the Texans, who got the win.

Speaker 8 (17:00):
But there is some concern about these Colts.

Speaker 7 (17:02):
Sauce Gardner you mentioned got injured and listen, culture struggling.

Speaker 8 (17:07):
Meanwhile, here come the Texans.

Speaker 7 (17:08):
They have a huge game against the Chiefs this week
in Arrowhead and CJ.

Speaker 1 (17:13):
Stroud is back.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
CJ.

Speaker 7 (17:14):
Stroud look good, Colin Herestroud. We're super dangerous. We lost
some close games against really good teams. If we can
find a way to win games after Thanksgiving, we'll put
ourselves in any position we want. This defense is playing nasty.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
This defense here, listen, I prefer offensive coaches. If you're
gonna go defense with the head coach, you gotta go young.
Mike McDonald's defense posted a shutout in Seattle, and Demico
Ryan's defense all make the argument the best defense in
the NFL today is Houston. That's what my eyes tell me.

Speaker 7 (17:46):
Yeah, I think I agree. They're the first team to
hold the Colts under twenty points yep this season. Now,
the Colts has some issues. It looks like they're stuck
in mud a little bit with the Jonathan Taylor run game.
But as for Houston, Colin I missed this last night. Yeah,
Houston was getting four points going into Arrowhead.

Speaker 1 (18:03):
Okay, it's down to three.

Speaker 8 (18:04):
And a half right now. Is that a game you're
interested in.

Speaker 7 (18:07):
Betting because Houston dutcause Stroud looked better.

Speaker 1 (18:09):
No, I think Houston's the play well.

Speaker 8 (18:12):
Coming off the concussion. People are like quarterback struggle coming off.

Speaker 7 (18:15):
But Stroud was out for like two or three weeks.
This wasn't like they rushed him back. Nico Collins looked good. Well,
David what he marks, your boy from.

Speaker 8 (18:22):
USC looks good. I think this is an interesting team.

Speaker 7 (18:25):
Now, if I told you Jacksonville was going to be
leading this division.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
I would trust in my opinion, And I think Liam
Cohen's done a great job. I would take Houston over Jacksonville.
I would trust Houston more.

Speaker 8 (18:38):
Well, what's crazy is Houston.

Speaker 7 (18:39):
If they don't beat the Chiefs, they probably won't make
the playoffs. So you get Colts or Jacksonville in the
playoffs based on the schedule.

Speaker 8 (18:46):
Just a wacky, wacky season. In the NFL Final story con,
let's go to the Seattle Seahawks.

Speaker 7 (18:51):
Wow, who destroyed Max Brosmer and the Vikings twenty six nothing.

Speaker 8 (18:57):
The big story of here, of course, was Sam Darnold. Afterward.

Speaker 7 (19:01):
You know, this is a big revenge spot for him.
He did not play particularly well yesterday, but they didn't
need it because the defense went off. Darnold signed a
three year, one hundred million dollar contract. Here he is
talking about why he left Minnesota for Seattle.

Speaker 9 (19:15):
I think for me, it was you know, just understanding
kind of.

Speaker 3 (19:21):
You know what was.

Speaker 9 (19:23):
You know, what was being talked about, just in terms
of you know, behind closed doors with you know, you know,
the people over there and my people. But at the
end of the day, you know, I made the decision
to come here, and I'm very very happy about that
decision and excited to you know, continue to work the
way that we've been working here and continue to build
the relationships in that locker room and with the coaching

(19:46):
staff here.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
You know what's amazing about Seattle, It's crazy. DeMarcus Lawrence
looks like a new body and a new player.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
Now.

Speaker 1 (19:55):
He was with the Cowboys. I don't remember him being
this cut or this fast. But like I mean, Ernest
Jones was good with the Rams, he's good with the Seahawks.
Out of Texan. Good player, DeMarcus Lawrence, he looks like
six years younger. I mean, when you're on the NFL
and the defensive side for twelve years, the league takes
its toll on you. He has been unbelievable for the Seahawks.

Speaker 4 (20:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (20:19):
You know who has not been unbelievable the last couple
of weeks is Sam Darnold. So I listen, I'm not
bashing him. I just remember last year, late in the season,
after all the tape was out there, he struggled yesterday
one hundred and twenty eight yards passing. Any fantasy owners
who have Jackson Smith and the Jigma know what's up.

Speaker 8 (20:36):
He had two catches.

Speaker 1 (20:37):
First three year. They's blinched heavy on the right side
on his right side every play, so he had I
mean he almost had six balls batted down at the line.

Speaker 8 (20:48):
It was a rough one.

Speaker 7 (20:49):
It's all gonna come down to the rematch against the Rams.
They win that, they I think they win the division
because that Rams lost to Carolina. If they lose that,
then I think things at Squirrelly. They're a wild card team.
They have to go on the road. And then you
start asking like, I don't know what's going on with
Darnold late in the season back to back seasons.

Speaker 1 (21:07):
I don't think he's the issue. I think.

Speaker 7 (21:11):
Listen, if you well, wait, the defense is great. You
just gassed up Lawrence and offense is very capable. They
score twenty six points. They're very capable.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
Now some of that was Ernest Jones had a tuddy,
but it's they're fine.

Speaker 8 (21:23):
I see some of that was Brosmer.

Speaker 7 (21:25):
I mean, did you see that interception that you I mean, Colin.

Speaker 3 (21:28):
I got that.

Speaker 7 (21:30):
That maybe the worst decision of the season by Eddie quarterback.

Speaker 8 (21:33):
I couldn't believe it.

Speaker 2 (21:35):
J Mack with a new Well, that's the news, and
thanks for stopping that. The Herd Line News.

Speaker 1 (21:41):
Doing a lot of college football this last hour because
there's so much going on. You know, I said this
earlier about Lane Kiffin, is you would have signed up
for it. You know, you would have, Like not every
relationship is a thirty year marriage. Sometimes it's two three
years dating. Lane Kiffin took you to a place you'd
never been to. You want to leve it regular season games.

(22:02):
He left abruptly, and I know a lot of people
don't like it. I think a lot of it's a
college football calendar issue. I've been saying this for years.
The reason boxing mostly died in this country isn't because
we don't like watching fights. It was selfishly run by promoters.
It didn't have a central figure. And then the UFC

(22:23):
with Dana White came in and overtook it. I was
more consistent, gave you better fight cards, more consistently. So listen,
people don't like getting dumped. When Lebron left Cleveland, it's
not that he left, it's the way he left. No,
he left. You didn't have to like it, But there
is no way to leave. Carmelo left the Nuggets, you know,

(22:45):
Dwight Howard in his prime left Orlando. There's no perfect
way to leave. It never feels right. So you know
I'm not defending Kifvin on that, but you know again,
it's let's not pretend it's football as the Vatican. You
know the business. It's wheeling and dealing, and I've compared

(23:05):
it to bitcoin. It's unregulated, every man for himself, wild
fluctuations and swings and you know, ole miss. My take is,
you win eleven games, you're the number one offense in
the country. Don't have to be bitter. I mean, I
understand being bitter for the hour or the day. It's
time to move on. Well, I've said this, I have

(23:26):
always If you dial, if you get on the phone
and say yeah, I'll go play out a conference in
August against at Ohio State, at Oklahoma, at Clemson and
you lose close, I will not hold it against you.
Anybody can schedule Panera Bread, Okay, to schedule Ohio State.

(23:52):
I'm like that, that's a big boy program. So I
would put Texas in. I don't have a problem with
it at all. Steve Start and their head coach is
joining us live. They're the only team with two wins
over opponents currently ranked in the college football Top ten,
so that matters to me, and urban Meyer said this,
if we punish you for Ohio State, which, by the way,

(24:14):
you lost closer to Steve Sarkisan joining us, you lost closer.
In fact, I'll play this here was Urban a bit
ago telling us why Texas should be in Let's play
the take.

Speaker 3 (24:26):
I think Texas deserves me in the playoff, and I
would not penalize that loss against Ohio State. You can't
do that. You can't or you're getting ready to see
old Dominions gonna become a favorite of all these big
teams playing or teams like that because they need. No
one cares Indiana is No one's saying a word about
Indiana's non conference schedule. No one yet. Texas made a
decision to get on a plane and go play the

(24:48):
number one team in the country or to number two
team in the country on the road, and they got
beaten a tough game. And now there's a chance because
of that they'll be late because if they didn't play
that game, we won't be out in this conversation.

Speaker 1 (25:00):
Yeah, and I also have stark thanks for joining us.
I've also said this, I'm more willing to give an
SEC team a loss that's perceived as ugly because on
Florida by the way when you lost, was better than
they are at the end of the season. But what
would you say to people start that go you know, Steve,
I mean, Georgia and Ohio State are fine, but that
Florida game, what would you say to the critics?

Speaker 4 (25:22):
Well, I'd say this, you know, at the end of
the day, in this conference, it's not about getting up
for two games a year. It's week in and week
out and the grind of this conference. And to go
play your sec opener in the swamp against Florida not
an easy task in that environment, against that team, with
the quality of players that they had. And I understand, Hey,

(25:43):
yours can go the way that they go. But at
the end of the day, you know, I'd love to
say that we went out and played a perfect season.
We didn't. We lost some tough games, but so did
a lot of other people. I think the difference is
we won some really big games. You know, we played five,
you know, top ten teams in the country. Out of
our twelve regular season games, five of them are against

(26:04):
top ten ranked teams in the country. Three of those
were wins, two of those of which are ranked in
the current top ten, and the other one Vanderbilt is
just outside the top ten. Did We finished the season
after that Florida game six and one, and of those
six wins, you know, four of them were against you know,
top ten ranked teams. We went three and one in
those four games. We capped it off with a with

(26:26):
a double digit win against the number three team, undefeated
Texas A and M team in the country. So all in all,
we're proud of what we did. I think we're more
than deserving of being in this playoff because I think
ultimately is this can if we're going to get into
looking at records, which is what the AP pole does.
The AP pole, the reporters, they can't watch every game,

(26:48):
all right, did they win, did they lose? What was
a score? All right? They were you know, they were
favored by twenty eight, they won by thirty one. They
just they ranked by records, and that's clear. But my
understanding of the committee is is how do you play
against the good teams? You know, how do you play
against the how do you play against the common opponents?
How do you play against because when you go into
the playoffs, nobody's going to be favored by twenty eight points,

(27:10):
right that these games are all. You know, they're going
to be tight ball games. How do you play against
the good teams? And if you only had one, two
or three shots against the good teams and you didn't win,
you didn't win. To me, that's part of your resume.
We had five opportunities and that's two more than any
other team in the country, and we won three of them,
which is the best since twenty Nineteam and Joe Burrow

(27:30):
and LSU, you know, beat three teams that were ranked
in the top ten during the regular season. So it's
a pretty monumental and historic run that we had to
get on. And I don't get me wrong, I wish
we went undefeated two, but there was a tall task
with a new team. We fought our tails off. We
fought our tails off in Columbus, Ohio, we fought our
tails off in Athens, Georgia, and we fought our tails

(27:51):
off in Gainesville, Florida, three of the probably most difficult
places to play in the country. And at the end
of the day, we're nine to three. We're six and
two in the Southeastern Conference. We've beaten three top ten
ranked teams, two of which are current top ten ranked teams.
One of which was undefeated up until last week. So
I'm very proud of what we've accomplished, and unequivocally I
think we should be in the playoffs. I'm actually kind

(28:13):
of shocked we're actually having a discussion about this. But again,
there's two teams ranked in front of us that we
just beat, one we just beat this last month, and
so I'm a little concerned about what the committee's looking at.
And to your point, if we're just gonna look at records,
I got to reevaluate our future schedules because I have
to do what's in the best interests of the University

(28:33):
of Texas. If we're gonna look at records, I got
to make sure I'm putting us in position to have
the best record possible at the end of the season,
as opposed to playing really good teams and then looking
at the total body work.

Speaker 1 (28:45):
You know. The other thing. You know, I said this earlier.
I watched Miami play pet up North in bad weather
and beat the you know what out of them, and
I'm like, well, they beat Notre Dame head to head,
and I just watched some hammer a solid pit team.
Now I have a different opinion. This morning, they had
four common opponents. Miami beat three of them worse, they
have a better defense. So I look at arch Manning.

(29:09):
So because Texas is so high profile, all your games
get talked about, especially the big games. People aren't paying
attention to ARC's last five games where he's got sixteen touchdowns,
two picks, three ten a game. So you're not the
same offense. Also, you introduce four new offensive linemen. Well,
now they've got all these games under their belt. So
if this Texas team played the early Texas team, you

(29:30):
would win. Let's talk arts Manning. You're a different offense
today than when I watched you in August? Are you not?

Speaker 4 (29:39):
No question about it? I mean just his level of maturity,
his growth. No college player at college football player has
been under more scrutiny, but under a bigger microscope, been
more scrutinized, been more criticized, And this guy has handled
it like an absolute pro. And all he did is
continue to work and get better, better and better. Unless

(30:02):
you don't watch our games, then I have a hard
time people making a comment about is he a better player?

Speaker 3 (30:09):
Is he not?

Speaker 4 (30:10):
If you watch us play? Oh yeah, there's nobody who
watches play doesn't think that this guy's not a better
player and a better leader and a better passer. I mean,
it's easy to see. And that's my concern though, is
that people don't really watch the games. They look at
highlights and they look at a box score as opposed
to actually watching the games, and how does he play
against the real quality opponents. And at the end of

(30:31):
the day, I mean, this guy's been I don't know
if there's a quarterback playing better than him right now
in the country.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
Quite frankly, you know, I said this last year when
Ohio State went to Auts and lost on the final play,
I said, I would actually rank them. I wouldn't drop them.
I don't see that as a negative. You had the
ball with under two minutes to go at midfield against
the Ohio State. You played him closer than everybody. You
also lost only on the road Georgia Ohio State floor. Again,

(30:57):
I consider that I can textualize all of it. Here's
the thing that it is interesting that I have always
given credit to the bigger schools because the SEC and
the Big ten playing bigger stadiums. Also, when you play
Ohio State the next week, you're all banged up, so

(31:18):
you know, when you played Georgia. Nobody comes out of
the Georgia game and says, well, we're totally healthy. That's
not the way the world works. Was there a moment
in this season though?

Speaker 5 (31:28):
Then?

Speaker 1 (31:29):
Because there was a lot of going back and forth,
what's Texas going to be? When was the moment you
thought to yourself, all, we can compete for the national championship?
Because I do think you can.

Speaker 4 (31:37):
Now, well, I think we had a real awakening against Oklahoma,
and I think everybody holds Oklahoma in high regard, and
that was coming out of the Florida game, and it
was who were we going to be? Were we going
to be able to come out of that locker room
in Gainesville, get back up off the mat and go
compete against a really good Oklahoma team. Didn't just compete,

(32:00):
We beat them by three scores, you know, on a
neutral site field. And so at that moment, I said,
you know what, we can go play and we can
go beat anybody. And again, it hasn't been perfect along
the way, but what I do know is we're a
battle tested football team. And I think that being a
battle tested football team, being a mature football team helped
us this past Saturday night against A and M. We're

(32:22):
down ten to three at half. There was no panic.
Our guys went out and dominated the second half. We
won the second half twenty four to seven. We ran
the football, we played great defense. You know, it's being
a complete football team, and it's having the ability to
be at your best when your best in need, when
your best is needed against the quality opponents. I'm not
talking about, Hey, how do you play when you're favored

(32:42):
by twenty eight points? How do you play against the
really good teams? Because there's really good teams in the
playoffs and we know that firsthand because we've been to
the semi finals the last two years. We've been a
play away from playing for a national championship. And you
need to be at your best when your best is
needed against the best teams.

Speaker 1 (32:58):
I actually think I believe you match up with Ohio
State really well because you have high end quarterback play,
you can run the ball, and you put pressure on
their young quarterback. So it's interesting to watch that game
now that Ohio State season has we've seen all of it. Now,

(33:18):
you matched up with them really well and didn't play
particularly well there. Okay, I got to leave you on
this we both know, Lane Kiffin, I think college football
has a calendar issue. I don't know what coaches are
supposed to do, Like, you know, you have to go
out and get that. I mean, not only is it
hiring a coach, you got to get the best staff.
So I feel some sympathy for Old Miss, but I

(33:38):
also feel bad for the coaches who have to leave players.
What did you make of that whole drama.

Speaker 4 (33:45):
Well, I think to your point, we do have a
timing issue, and it's not just you know, the coaching
carousel's part of it. Like the SEC just hired five
new coaches yesterday, and obviously we've got National Signing Day
here coming up on Wednesday, and so there's a reason
everyone's hiring their coaches this weekend. They're trying to close
on their recruiting classes. You know, we tried to fix

(34:05):
that moving up the signing date to help because of
the portal, But now we pushed the portal back till January,
but then we never adjusted the high school signing date
back to mid December, and so everybody was in a scramble.
Everybody was in a race. People got put in some
some compromising situations of what to do, how to do?
One to do? And Lane had to make a decision.
He made the decision to go to LSU. They had

(34:28):
a great run at Old Miss and they had a
very good football team. They took advantage of their schedule
and they won the games that for the most part,
that they were supposed to And he made a decision
to go to LSU. And now Old Miss has gotten
an opportunity to go do what they want to do.
I think I think that the part that I want
for our sport is, you know, let's not make him
out to be the villain. Let's not make you know,

(34:49):
Old Miss and their ad out to be the villain.
It is what it is. Let's all move on.

Speaker 1 (34:53):
Yeah, all right, good luck to you. Congrats on that win.
Really really it was great. Plus I watched the Oklahoma
game that was impressive too. Thanks Mark, appreciate you, buddy.

Speaker 4 (35:04):
Hook him up to it, all right.

Speaker 1 (35:06):
Yeah, I mean I'll say it like, we got a
twelve team playoff. I wish we had a fourteen. I
wish we invited because I have a really really hard time.
When Ohio State lost last year to Oregon and Autson,
I came on the air and said They're going to
meet again and Ohio State's going to beat them, and
then maybe for the national championship. I did not believe

(35:28):
that Oregon was necessarily better than Ohio State, but it
was auson playing in Columbus against that defense. Arch Manning's
biggest game. Come on, that's fourteen to seven when that
the final score, low scoring game. I actually think Texas
doesn't match up well in my opinion with Georgia. I

(35:52):
think Texas matches up with everybody, everybody really well. So
that's where we are.

Speaker 2 (35:57):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekday
said noon Eastern non a em Pacific.

Speaker 1 (36:06):
So, uh, you know, I've never been a hat on
backwards guy, especially for quarterbacks or head coaches, but I
like my bourbon neat and my coaches shirtless. After I
saw Ben Johnson this weekend, now I suggested that I

(36:44):
will consider going shirtless if I go five and zero
on the Blazing Five at any point the remainder of
the season. The good news for the staff is I
went two and three this weekend, so that's not gonna happen.
The games are getting tougher to pick. The Bears are
interesting because takeaways unbelievable running game, unbelievable, coaching amazing. Caleb

(37:07):
Williams good, especially in the fourth quarter. Accuracy not ideal,
but in fairness, they're number two in the league in
big plays. You know that matters to me? Here is
Matt Hasselback earlier on the Bears.

Speaker 10 (37:22):
Their quarterback has to be better with accuracy, better with
ball placement, Like that's the next step for him. Last
year I said, you need to take less sacks, I
need better body language, and need you to be a
better leader and kind.

Speaker 4 (37:34):
Of protect the team.

Speaker 10 (37:35):
He's done all those things, like hats off to him
and hats off to Ben Johnson. But again, the schedule
will get tougher. Do I think they'll be the one
seed at the end of this No, I don't do.
I think they're a really good team.

Speaker 4 (37:45):
Yeah I do.

Speaker 1 (37:47):
I will say this. I'm not a believer that buys
help a lot in football. Remember years ago Tennessee Vrabel
had to buy Cincinnati walked in young play well beat him.

Speaker 6 (37:59):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (38:00):
I do think buys can help if you're a really,
really old team. Kansas City Travis Kelsey gets another week,
Chris Jones gets another week. I think for an old,
old team that's not Chicago. I think Chicago needs to
keep playing and keep winning. If I'm Seattle, I don't
want to buy week. If I'm Green Bay or Chicago,

(38:20):
I don't want to buy week. If I'm New England,
I don't want to buy week. I think if you're Philadelphia,
you made that coaching staff may need an extra week.
They've got they've you know, they got some older players.
You know, if Pittsburgh squeezed in, I think Pittsburgh went
won a week off. But I'm not with Chicago. You
know a lot of their you know the other thing

(38:41):
about Chicago, Jalen Johnson, right sweat, DJ Moore. You know
a lot of their players, Joe Tooney, Drew Dolman. You
know a lot of their better players are still in
their prime. Let's look at Chicago's schedule going forward. Everybody
pointed to the Philadelphia game is the rough one? Well,

(39:05):
is green Bay the rough one? Because after green Bay
it's Cleveland at home. They get Detroit at home. So
Detroit doesn't look very good. Cleveland doesn't look very good.
So yeah, I think the at green Bay game, I
think green Bay and the Bears are gonna split I
think at San Francisco is a very winnable game. But
we keep saying, well they got to go to Baltimore. Well,

(39:27):
now they lost that and they're still flying. Well they
gotta go to Cincinnati and Burrow Burl wasn't there. Well,
they have to, they have to, you know. The bottom
line is they keep answering the test. And yes they
lost against Minnesota to start the season, they would not
lose now. So it's like I said about the Miami Hurricanes,
you know, playing Florida State. When they beat them, they
were good. So right now the playoff picture is the

(39:50):
Bears Rams. So the Rams are an interesting team. Jmac
the Rams, Devonte Adams, Matt Stafford, Rob Haven time, the
right tackle. There's an argument the Rams are one of
those teams that a bye would do them good. They're
right tackle old, they're quarterback old, you know, I mean,

(40:12):
Puka gets banged up, Devonte Adams. There's an argument the
Rams using a bye. Philadelphia bye would help. I think
Tampa's been banged up all year. They could use a bye.
They're not going to get one. Chicago, Seattle, Green Bay, no,
thanks your thoughts.

Speaker 7 (40:30):
Well, using a bye would be huge for say Detroit,
which doesn't have Amara Saint Brown for at least two weeks. Colin,
that means no Amara Saint Brown this week and then
the following week, which is against the Rams.

Speaker 8 (40:43):
That is devastating.

Speaker 1 (40:45):
I don't see.

Speaker 7 (40:45):
I mean, listen, Dallas. You know, I was shocked that
Detroit's favored over Dallas on Thursday. And I know, I
just don't think people are.

Speaker 8 (40:53):
Seeing like Detroit the way they should. Colin. Detroit's not
great right now. They're beat up on the interior line.
What a Dallas? Just be fun? Quinnin Williams, who's wrecking people?

Speaker 7 (41:03):
Are you taking Dallas against Detroit this Thursday?

Speaker 3 (41:06):
Yep?

Speaker 7 (41:07):
I don't see how you can't. What's the argument for Detroit, Colin?
What are they doing well right now? Well, you know,
they were so good on fourth down. Now they're a
bad third down team. They're a bad fourth down team. Well,
they can't run the ball.

Speaker 1 (41:20):
That was the Ben Johnson secret, sauce the trick plays
third down decided. They were so good in these crisis plays,
especially in the red zone. They were so good. Now
they're not. And we never thought they had the best
defense at personnel or the best most mobile athletic quarterback.
We thought they were so good, play design, play calling,
third down, fourth down, they're not anymore.

Speaker 7 (41:41):
You know who's really good offensively? The Dallas Cowboys. Did
you see how many times McDuffie was grabbing an He
could not keep up with Pickens and Lamb like the
Kansas City struggled. But Dallas's offenses, I mean we joked
that they were like the Bengals, right, the Bengals of
the NFC.

Speaker 8 (41:59):
They might be better. I don't know, like, how do
you stop that offense? Right now?

Speaker 7 (42:03):
They just beat the two teams that were in the
Super Bowl pretty convincingly in back to back games.

Speaker 1 (42:09):
Oh, they were better than Kansas City. Yeah, that's gonna
start getting into certain conversations like Hall of Fame votes are.

Speaker 8 (42:17):
Oh oh wow, whoa, that's a quantum leap.

Speaker 1 (42:21):
All of the AI. There's gonna be all sorts of
quantum leaves.
