Speaker 1 (00:01):
Oh, good morning everybody. Hope you enjoying your Friday. I'll
tell you what, Jason Martin, I've got some good and
bad news to start off the show here. Uh. Good
news is our guy Justin Cooper is in trusted producer
is in for the great Lee Robert de Lap the fourth.
So that's good. Uh the bad news depending on your perspective.
He has baited me in to the Evil Confidence Pool
(00:23):
yet again this year, where you pick every game based
on the spread, and then you rank your level of
confidence on each game each week. It's a recipe for
just second guessing yourself all day on Sunday and also
Thursday and also Monday. I saw him back in to
that whole thing. You've ever done one of those things, Jason,
(00:44):
A confidence pool and not not exactly. Hey, Coop, appreciate
the invite. Um, I would play if somebody invited me,
I would play in that world. And Cooper and I
used to work together five days a week for a
couple of years in a row. But it does sound
nerve wracking. It sounds hey, there's just something like all
day long. It's like, gosh, I'm such an idiot. Yeah,
(01:05):
there's plenty of time you can still you can still
join there you go official. I don't know if I
don't know if there's a limited number of spots, but
here it's happening right here live on the radio. I'm
I will be all happily joined that lay. That's that's
good to hear. Actually, I think you know, unless you
bump us down on the payment list right there. But yeah,
(01:26):
it's you know what, I'll tell you this though, it's
good practice of picking games against the spread where worst
case scenario, it's not gonna cost you thousands of dollars.
You know it's gonna cost you about a hundred. But
you you learned, man, you learn a lot. We've done
it for a few years and I haven't torn my
hair out as much as I used to, Jason, but
(01:48):
still I think it is a bit on the evil side. Now,
if we switched to some preseason action last night, one
thing that stood out to me Trey Lance with the
forty Niners tray A. Lance looked rough. He he was
tripping over his running back, like he almost tripped his
running back handing off to the guy at first, and
(02:10):
it was interesting hearing Ryan Fitzpatrick's analysis at halftime this
was a game on Amazon Prime, and so, uh, I
was able to see it. It sounds like an advertisement.
It's really not Jason, I've I've got NFL Plus. I
actually a hardcore I had Game Pass for the last
couple of years. It's now just NFL Plus. But I
was watching that way, and so it's the Amazon Prime crew.
(02:33):
And Ryan Fitzpatrick pointed that out at halftime. He's like,
he just looks nervous out there, like he's almost tripping
his running back. He's missing open receivers. He missed George
Kittle on one, uh easy throw. He missed George Kittle
on the next throw. The next read, which was third
and short, and he dumped it off to another player.
Running back didn't pick up the first down, had a
(02:54):
wide open receiver over the middle. It was he completed it,
but it was a low throw. No. Yeah, and that's
It's just like Davis Mills looked way better than Trey
Lance last night. And look, I know that things can change.
I know that Trey Lance could end up being the
much better pro than Davis Mills. But all I'm saying
(03:15):
is this isn't where San Francisco wants to be at
this point where a third round pick looks way better
than a third overall pick. But that's exactly what happened
last night. I don't want to overreact the preseason if
I don't want to give it, give you credit. If
you played great in a preseason game, I don't want
to bury you too far because of how you performed
(03:35):
in one. I mean, famously, Peyton Manning's colts would go
UNBA or they wouldn't win, and then you have the
Lions that would sweep the preseason. But at the same time,
we this isn't like the most stunning thing to me.
The most stunning thing to me is everybody that's already
crowned San Francisco and is acting like Trey Lance as
a borderline m VP candidate. That dude hasn't played much
(03:55):
football in the last couple of years. I don't know
if you knew that, Brian, but I don't think that's
news to anybody out there. What did Davis Mills do
last year that Trey Lance didn't? He played and he's not.
The thing that no one really wants to talk about
is he's not terrible. I'm not suggesting we're looking at
Aaron Rodgers two point oh or something like that. But
Davis Mills a serviceable player in the league in his
(04:18):
second year UH playing for the Houston Texans, and Trey
Lance is still trying to figure some things out. There's
gonna be some flash moments and some great moments. There's
also gonna be some baffling inconsistency about what Trey Lance
is likely to provide this year. So when I saw
last night, I mean the mystic kittle, that was an
easy throw. That's a throw you've got to be able
(04:38):
to make in the NFL. Wasn't able to complete that past.
Like you said, he just he looks clumsy out there.
He looks like there's just it isn't all it isn't
all jelled around him, everybody playing for San Francisco. And
I'm not surprised because he hasn't played a lot of
ball lately. Yeah. Yeah, It's one of those deals where
I think you gotta find the middle ground of not
(04:58):
overreacting but not underreacting. If there's such a thing right
where he just he looks bad heading into Week one,
and that isn't where the Niners want to be. And
I just look at the scenario where this isn't like
the rookies last year where look at Davis Mills. Davis
Mills isn't compared to a quarterback like Jimmy Garoppolo, who
(05:22):
I don't think it's anything special, but he won a
bunch of games with the forty Niners, and the forty
Niners are in the process of kicking him to the
curb to give the keys to Trey Lance. That wasn't
the case with any of these rookie quarterbacks, not Trevor Lawrence,
not Mac Jones, not Davis Mills, not anybody, not justin fields.
So that comparison deal that Trey Lance is gonna have
(05:44):
to deal with this whole season and his whole career
in San Francisco until he shows that he's a better option.
He's always gonna be compared to not just what Jimmy
G did, but what the Niners did while Jimmy G
was behind in center. And that's a lot to deal with.
He is just under a bigger microscope than those other
(06:04):
rookie quarterbacks in his draft class were last season. Yeah. Well,
and I think the other thing is in different than
those guys. He has already made roster that can get
them deep into the postseason. Like he's walking into a
team that has Kyle Shanahan, that has George Kittle, that
has Deebo Samuel and Brandon I You and a great
(06:25):
defense led by Fred Warner and those guys. So there's
a lot that's expected of that if you're gonna be
the caretaker of that kind of offense, and in fact,
you're not gonna be the caretaker, you're Trey Lance. The
reason that they're moving on from Garoppolo is they thought
he was too much of a caretaker. But Brian and
I've been pretty critical of Garoppolo. But at the same time,
you also have to look at the fact that this
(06:46):
is a quarterback in the National Football League that's gone
to a Super Bowl and been within one better half
of going to a second one in his time in
San Francisco. There's a lot of teams that were crawled
over broken glass for a quarterback that just wouldn't screw
them out of making it that deep. And so Trey
Lance is stepping into a situation where a lot is
expected of that team, a lot is expected from him,
(07:08):
specifically to upgrade Jimmy Garoppolo. And again, I need to
see it before I buy into it. I see a
lot of people that wear suits on television, well at
least before the pandemic, and now where whatever they want,
because they've gotten used to doing that on the webcams,
on the zoom cams. But these people are just picking
San Francisco left and right. I'm gonna need to see it.
(07:29):
I know. I know we've got a little bit of
an elbow issue out there with Stafford and all this
other stuff. I'm taking the rams right now just because
I don't know what to make of Trey Lance as
of yet. He might be everything all these people are saying,
but I want to take the known commodity over the
unknown at this point because I just think there's gonna
be some real highs, but there's gonna be some ebbs
and flows to this year for him. Yeah, I think
(07:52):
that makes sense. I think that when I, like you say,
all these dudes and suits just waxing poetic about Trey Lance,
and the thought I keep coming back to is but
the guy hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt in
the NFL. Like I know he was great at at
North Dakota State. I know that he's got a lot
(08:12):
of ability. I get all of that, but he hasn't
earned the benefit of the doubt in the NFL yet,
and I'm not expecting just a finished version, just totally
polished from the get go. He's only started two games
in his NFL career, so I'm not expecting peak. You know,
Steve Young two point oh from Trey Lance right away.
(08:33):
Guys developed at their own pace. Look at Josh Allen
with the Bills. He was pretty iffy his first two seasons,
and then year three, it's like, whoa, this dude is
an m v P runner up. So it's gonna take
a little bit of time with Trey Lance. But I'm
just telling you it's funny because with Jimmy G and
the the overthrow in the Super Bowl to Emmanuel Sanders,
(08:54):
that is a distant memory right now. The reasons why
the Niners went with Trey Lance was to try to
upgrade that position because they knew Jimmy G was limited
and they knew that he wasn't one of those dudes
that they could count on to make big plays in
the Super Bowl. Look at that fourth quarter with Mahomes
with the big past, the Tyreek Hill and Jimmy G
(09:16):
left one too long to Emmanuel Sanders. That's why they
did it. But the more Trey Lance struggles and the
more that the Niners don't look like even last year's
version that made it to the NFC Championship game, man,
that's a lot of scrutiny to deal with. A lot. Yeah,
and and as you mentioned about Josh Allen, the one
difference in Josh Allen's second year in Buffalo and Trey
Lances in San Francisco, to the point that I made
(09:38):
a couple of minutes ago, is that the Bills weren't
ready to win anything yet they had to go get
Stefon Diggs. There had to be some things that changed,
table had to really get in sync with Josh Allen.
It took that third year to really kind of coalesced
around him, and he had been there for a couple
of seasons prior and played a lot of football and
a lot of relatively mediocre two boy, there's a lot
(10:00):
of potential here was kind of what you would hear,
but at the same time you were also worried every
time he threw the ball where it was going to
end up. San Francisco doesn't have that issue because if
you believe in the dreaded championship window. Right now, you've
got the third pick from last year playing quarterback for you,
(10:20):
with the roster that you have around you. In a
historically I would just say very weak NFC. We know
where the power lies in the NFL this year, Brian,
and that's in the a f C. See if you
look at the NFC, you've got Tom Brady, if he
has an offensive lump, You've got Green Bay if they
have wide receivers. You've got the Rams. Assuming Stafford's healthy,
(10:40):
I still think they're They're probably the class of the conference.
And then you've got a bunch of maybees and maybe
the Vikings can be good. Maybe something happens properly in
Arizona this year, maybe you see a couple of teams
turn it on and get a little bit better. But
there's a whole lot of question marks out there. And
San Francisco being as close as they were to the
chip last year, this is where you need that quarterback
(11:03):
to already be ready. And I think San Francisco fans
need to prepare themselves for the fact that this ain't
gonna be a fourteen and three kind of team. It
just isn't. If they make the playoffs, they might be
dangerous because at that point, maybe Trey Lance has really
kind of found a groove and again he's gonna have
what he needs around him to succeed. But early in
this season, I just feel like it's gonna be very
(11:25):
uneven and there's gonna be a lot of question marks
around week six to week eight about exactly what this
football team is and what the ceiling is for them
in Yeah, I see it the same way. And I'll
tell you this, Uh that Thursday night football theme song.
They've got a new theme song. Man, they wear that
thing out, Jason, you got the NFL, Brian. I don't
(11:45):
know if they're very excited, they're like, let's crack up
the theme song again. Going to commercially, they play that
thing nine stop. They love it. They are all over it. Man,
Well I would play it a lot with toast. Even
if you do like a shot of beer each time
they play that thing, you're not gonna make it through
a game. That's the way they have it set up.
I mean, you see how much money they paid. I'm
surprised that. I'm surprised they're not playing it underneath the game,
(12:08):
some kind of bed music, Like we're coming out of
a break constantly and they're just playing that underneath constantly
because who knows. It's like, yeah, we're gonna get our
money's worth on this thing. Yeah. Yeah, some of these
segments you'll get like, I don't know, like speak for yourself.
For Jalen and Jacobe, they've got the music underneath. Yeah,
that might be the new advanced to the football presentation.
(12:31):
They just play their themes, their theme music throughout the
entire broadcast. I like what you're thinking right there. All right,
we got a lot to do, man, lots going on
this morning coming up. The injury is far worse than
originally thought. Is this a game changer going forward? We'll
dive into that. I'm Brian Note, he's Jason Martin. We're
in for the guys here on Fox Sports Radio. Be
(12:52):
sure to catch live editions of Two Pros and a
Cup of Joe with Brady, Quinn, Lavarre Errington and Jonas
Knocks week days at six am Eastern three am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio Whip.
I'm probably no, he's Jason Martin here on Fox Sports Radio,
in for the two pros and a cup of draw
Joe Crew. You know, I don't know if it's a
(13:13):
morning picked me up here, Jason, But talking injuries, you know,
talking injuries, it's uh, it's needed here. We started off
with chet home grin who goes down. Now it's official,
right like, he's out for the entire season. We thought
he might miss some time, but he suffered a Liz
Frank injury in the pro am, the Jamal Crawford Pro
(13:34):
am over there, and with this guy being on the
shelf for the entire season, do you see anything changing
going forward? Do you see teams either discouraging their players
or forbidding them to playing from playing in pro ams
going forward? Can you see certain organizations doing something like that? Well,
this definitely is not a pick me up for me
(13:56):
as an Oklahoma City Thunder fan. Oh Man, Yeah, double
waging there. Yeah. Not not not great, Bob. But at
the same time, I can say I don't know if
it's gonna change anything. I kind of wish it would
because I get tired of even though it's not something
that happens every day. Why would you take the extra
risk considering the rigors of an NBA schedule and go
(14:18):
do something that's not gonna benefit you very much. If
you need to do something for charity, do an event
that doesn't involve you playing against Lebron James in a
pro am, because you're gonna get an opportunity to do
that later on. I think the bigger issue is just
and I think this will be the story and and
we'll continue to talk about it. Is the problem for
Check coming into the league was was he going to
(14:40):
be durable? Because the way he was built. There's a
lot of guys that have been a number two pick
overall that have had this kind of lanky frame and
they've struggled to stay healthy in the league. You got
like Sean Bradley and guys like that way back in
the day, and now you're looking at Chat like the
skill set is all world, but if he's not on
the floor, it's not gonna help you all that much.
(15:00):
I don't know what the answer is here, but I'm
always cringe, always cringe when I see guys going even
like three quarters speed during the summer, because it just
seems like there's all risk and no reward to doing it, Like,
is he gonna become a better basketball player because he's
playing in a pro am, I doubt it. I don't
want to completely stop people from being able to live
(15:22):
their lives. Athletes have to go have fun too. But
I'm paying you a lot of money to be the
new face, the new centerpiece of my franchise, the best
player we have had since the Golden era in Oklahoma City,
certainly since Durant left and Westbrook left. So now you're
just sitting there and this whole hope thing that the
(15:43):
Thunder had going for him this year gets dashed. It
sets you back another year, and who knows what you're
looking at by the time he comes back. So I am.
I am bothered by the idea that these kinds of
things happen in spots where they don't have to. I know,
you can get hurt in your own home, but the
likelihood you're gonna get hurt in a pro am seems
(16:04):
like it would be greater because you're just adding more
tread on tires that already you're gonna have to play
a d two regular season games, maybe playoff games, all
of that. Like you're gonna get plenty of basketball in
I don't know why you've got to play it in
the middle of August. Yeah, it's a tricky one for
me because I think it's an organization you want to
find the middle ground of at least having a heads
(16:26):
up what a player is about to do, but not
being micromanaging at the same time, you know what I
mean where I just saw a video of k D
and Kyrie playing full court the other day and Trey
Young was playing along with them, and you know what
I mean, Like, do you want to be an organization
that says, you gotta let us know where you're playing
basketball at and we have to know if the court
(16:48):
is legit and if we're comfortable and yeah, yeah, like
you don't want to discourage guys from going out there
and hooping. But I can see where certain organizations are
gonna want to think, hey, uh, if you're playing in
a pro am and it turns out the game is
canceled with condensation on the floor in the second quarter,
and that's not ideal. You know, that's not an ideal scenario.
(17:10):
So I think it's gonna vary from franchise to franchise.
I think some are gonna have more of a handsoff
approach and like, you guys are grown men, just check
it out. Just be as careful as possible, but well,
we want you out there hooping, getting better. And I
think other organizations might be a little bit more micromanaging,
if you will, And I think that there are gonna
(17:31):
be certain instances where either approach turns out to be
the better one. But I think with this being such
a high profile injury, yeah, I can see certain organizations saying,
you know, at least give us a heads up at
the very least. But it'll be interesting to see what
franchises do going forward. And my guess is we're probably
not gonna know about what most franchises do regarding something
(17:55):
like this going forward. I think it's gonna be a
very internal type thing that they say to their players. Yeah,
I mean, I think that you're right. I don't think
that you want to come across too strict, because you
want these guys to feel like they have freedom, they
have your support, and they have your confidence in the
way that they're choosing to live their lives. But there
(18:16):
is something to be said for the parent that the
little bit harsh that does protect just a little bit more,
not too much. You don't want them to feel too
sheltered out there. You can't stop them from living their
lives entirely. But I don't I think that you're right.
I think that you're gonna see both. I think you're
gonna see some people that maybe fly a little bit
too close to that sun and then some that are
(18:37):
nowhere near it that might not even be in the
same solar system with it. It's just unfortunate that this
kind of thing can happen. And this is the other
side of it. Right, Let's say he doesn't get hurt.
We maybe we maybe don't talk about the program at all,
or perhaps we talked about some crazy move 're like, wow,
did you see chat do this? Like that's the thing?
You can't like, we don't know which one it's gonna be.
(19:00):
Like you're playing the lottery in that case, sometimes you win,
sometimes you lose, And in this case for the Oklahoma
City Thunder, they have lost in the worst way possible
because again, they were gonna have people and the fan
base is still great down there, even as they haven't
been good, but had some young talent last year that
was starting to really move them in the right direction.
(19:21):
But this just stunts the growth and the more that
you have things like this happened to teams that are
still trying to kind of build back into something. The
worst it is for the league, Like, yeah, you've got
to have you've got to have those guys at the
top that are always the ones that you're chasing. But
the more of these secondary markets, the more of those
kind of teams that can come there and be relevant
(19:43):
and be good, the better off your league is are
gonna be, the deeper year league is gonna be. And
this just knocks them out of the equation because at
this point you've got to look to next year. Yeah,
it definitely you know this year is a rap, but
think about I think of the next season's draft, where
this dude, Victor weimbon Yama, he is this can't miss prospect, right,
(20:05):
and you think about teams like the Spurs. The Spurs
are just obviously tanking. They got rid of most of
their good players, are all of their good players, and
they're trying to bottom out and get Tim Duncan two
point oh. And if you think about Oklahoma City, they
had the number two overall pick last season, and we
know it's a lottery, right, So if you're one of
the teams with the worst record, you could end up
(20:28):
with the number one overall picks. So with chet Home
Grin going down, I'm sure there are a lot of
teams that are bottoming out on purpose this season, trying
to get this French phenom, if you will. They're looking
at chet Home Grin's injury like, oh no, like that
could be bad for us going forward. So it's kind
of funny how it sets up things potentially for next
(20:50):
year's NBA Draft with the chet Home Grin injury. But
a lot of layers to that is not just this season,
it could be the next ten fifteen seasons, depending on
where this prospect ends up going. Oh yeah, absolutely. I
I just again, it's just it's not what you want.
It's not the news the NBA wants in the offseason.
(21:12):
They probably don't want to be making too much news
in August. And now they've had the Durant thing, which
finally came to an end. I'm sure we'll talk about
that some degree before the end of this program. And
now you've got the chet Holmgren deal, and now you
just want to make sure that everybody stays healthy because
your league needs its stars. Every league needs its stars.
This league absolutely needs all of its stars, especially it's
young stars, the guys that you hope are going to
(21:34):
carry you into the next generation because you you are
flushed with great talent in the NBA right now. But
you this guy had all of the hype last year, Gonzaga.
I think a lot of people believe that the team
have been running through him and not Timmy. Maybe they
would have been better positioned when they got into the
n C Double A tournament. And now you find yourself
(21:54):
stunting a franchise. You try to figure out what this
is gonna mean. This is gonna be a year away
from the game for Chet Holmgren, who's still a developing player.
How much does this set his maturation back as an
NBA player in terms of what he was gonna learn
this year on the floor, whatever bumps and bruises he
was gonna take. Uh. You hope that he's gonna come
(22:15):
out of that even stronger. But this, Liz Frank, it's
not like he's gonna be able to do all that
much for a while. And that that just sucks. Brian.
I know that's not like deep analysis, but that's just
the way it is. Be sure to catch live editions

so do yourself of favor and listen to Inside the
Parkner with Rob Parker on the I Heart Radio app
or wherever you get your podcast. It has a Crazy
(23:38):
Story with Matt Ariza with the Buffalo Bills. Gross, yeah, right,
Like you talk about a turn. It was just the
other day right against the Colts where he bombed an
eighty two yard punt and it was just like, wow,
this guy the punt gut and and now the news
with a potential gang rape in college. That's the quite
(24:00):
the turn right there, to say the least man. And look,
I don't know what happened. We'll get more details as
we go forward. I don't want to rush to judgment
just yet. Um, but man, that's a different headline than
check out this dude bombing in at two yard punt
in the preseason, right, yeah it is. And this is
the other thing, if there's anything to this, He's a punter,
(24:20):
right like, this isn't This isn't a position that can
get away with being kind of in the news in
this way. Like even if the guy's bombing at two
yard punts, I know what a value that can be.
And I'm not trying to completely undercut what a punter
can mean in terms of field positioning, especially if you
really are good at your craft. But this is not
(24:42):
the kind of news that the Bills are going to
tolerate for very long, right, Like if this is something
that drags on. They'll just move on because you're a punter,
like they will go somewhere else and find somebody else
to punts football. Yeah. Hey, that's an interesting point for sure.
While we're talking about the preseason, you see this Aaron
Donald the uh the fensive tackle. God, I guess right.
(25:02):
So in a joint practice against the Bengals, you had
Aaron Donald swinging two helmets at Bengals players. He was
going Miles Garrett style, like swinging a helmet, trying to
hit dudes. And uh, I mean there's some discussion. Should
he be suspended, should he be fined, maybe there's a fine.
(25:23):
The thing here is no one got hurt. That's the deal.
You don't have Mason Rudolph getting clubbed over the head
right like he just had him swinging a couple of helmets.
Not a good look, not a good look whatsoever. But
I don't think it's gonna be a suspension. Maybe it's
a fine. But if somebody got hurt, yeah you could
talk suspension, but I don't see anything as far as
that going. Uh. As far as that happening, is that
(25:44):
how you see this with Miles Garrett going It looked
like a Marvel type character and going back and forth
with some of these Bengals players. You normally don't see
that in a joint practice. Not quite like that, No,
I mean you see scuffles and brawls and all this,
and the emotions get charged up, and there's guys that
want to show up other guys, and there's a lot
of pressure and all of that, but usually not to
(26:06):
this degree. At the same time, the rule is that
the NFL doesn't really handle anything that goes on training camp.
The clubs do. So this would actually be up to
the Rams to to suspend Aaron Donald for Week one
against the Build. You think that's gonna happen, because I don't,
I mean not not in any way. Maybe a fine
just because okay, yeah, we might find you, but I
(26:27):
wouldn't even be surprised if it's not even that. But
there's no chance whatsoever, with the league not even being
you know, in control of this situation or this kind
of situation the offseason at all, Uh, there will there
is zero chance that Aaron Donald is gonna miss a
single snap against the Buffalo Bills. You know what's funny
(26:47):
is you were just talking about this with Matt Ariza
and the impact on your football team, right, Like Ariza
is a punter, uh, you've got Aaron Donald who is
phenomenal as a defen pens of linemen. And it's just
funny to me when you get these training camp brawls,
how the reaction can differ depending on who's involved. If
(27:09):
it's some no name linebacker and oh lineman from the Giants,
it's like, hey, hey, hey, we we don't want to
be out of control here, right, we can't cost the
team penalties. When the regular season rolls around, it could
be Aaron Donald literally swinging helmets at dudes, and it's
just like, hey, boys will be boys, you know. It's
it's just it's all right, you know. It's just it's
(27:31):
completely different the reaction, either with the team or from
the outside looking in, depending on who is involved in
the brawl. And that's exactly what's happening with with Aaron Donald.
It's just one of those shrug your shoulders, boys will
be boys because he's phenomenal. That's just the way it's
gonna land. Yeah, absolutely, I mean it's a weird, well
(27:52):
it's not a perfect analogy, but look, there's there's a
reason the Browns went for Shaun Watson. There's a reason
that they did that where they wouldn't have done it
for a her, or they wouldn't have done it for
a lot of other positions. But the question then, and
and it's been answered, is what is the value of
a franchise level quarterback in two in the NFL? And
the answer is your soul. That's that's that's where we are, right.
(28:15):
So Aaron Rodgers can hold up a franchise for two
consecutive years, show up whenever he feels like it, all
these other kinds of things. You're gonna listen to that,
but it's not gonna happen otherwise, Like you have to be.
The value has to be huge. So in this case,
Aaron Donald is one of one. There's nobody else in
the league that does what Aaron Donald does. There's nobody
else in the league that gets talked about the way
(28:37):
erald Aaron Donald does across the NFL by every coach
that sees him, everybody that deals with him. He's going
to get away with this. They're just gonna say, hai, hai,
You know, Aaron Donald, he's just a competitor. He's this
was a super Bowl matchup from last year probably said
something about his family like, I mean they they will
come up with a reason for this to be okay.
(28:59):
And and really in general, especially with nobody getting hurt,
was a dangerous Sure, these brawls happen. Uh, emotions are
high in these combined practices. I'm not looking at this like,
I don't look at this the same way I looked
at the situation with Mason Rudolph because he's sitting there
without his helmet on. Garrett's throwing the helmet down towards him,
(29:20):
like crashing it down towards him. That was a different
circumstance in the regular season where if you do that
now the league does have control. That's the other thing.
If you leave it to the Rams, you already know
what's gonna happen. If the guy is good. If this
were a punter that had done this for the Rams,
he might be out for the Bills game. No, kid, like,
even with the Rams they might do it, They're not
(29:42):
doing it when the Aaron Donald against the Bills. It's
just not gonna happen. Yeah, that is a good point.
And you've got grainy training camp footage. You know you're
zooming in and zooming out constantly, and is that Aaron Donald.
It's not the same as super slow motion with Miles
Geart in the regular season clubbing a helmett helmeless, slit
(30:03):
helmet list, uh, Mason Rudolph is much different. So yeah,
it will be. It'll be policed much differently as well.
I would I'd like to know what Myles Garrett thinks
about this. He's not gonna mention it on the record,
it would do him no good. But just in the
locker room, if someone's like, hey man, check this out
and hands them their phone, I really wonder what he
(30:24):
would think or say about that, you know what I mean.
I don't know that he's crying foul that Aaron Donald
isn't going to be suspended for as many games as
he was, But I would really like to know what
his honest reaction would be to that. But I would
think he would know the difference as far as that goes.
All right, we got a lot more to do coming
up next. The goat is back. There's another player that's
(30:46):
not gonna see the field though, And I'm trying to
make sense of this. I'm Brian No, he's Jason Martin.

(31:10):
here on Fox Sports Radio. In for the guys, two
pros and a cup of Joe. So the Goat is back, Jason, Jason. Uh.
Tom Brady is back with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After
do we know where he went? Is that we're just
speculating where he was for eleven days? I don't know.
I don't know where he was. Did we hear about
the Mass Singer? Wasn't that one of the worst stories
(31:32):
of last week that he was actually going to film
the Mass Singer? Yeah, one of the worst rumors, I think. Uh,
I can't imagine he missed eleven days for that. But
you hope not. Yeah, I would hope not. I don't
know what they're filming requirements are for the Mass Singer.
Good lord, but uh Brady is back. He's gonna play
on Saturday against the Colts. Missed the first two preseason
(31:54):
games and got some preseason action last year. I limited
it was it was twelve for six X team but
played in each game and they'll be back on Saturday.
And I just double checked because there was news that
Jacoby Brissette with the Browns was not gonna be on
the field, but he will be starting. He'll be starting
(32:14):
against the Bears in the last preseason game for the Browns.
And I just look at those two stories together, where
it's like Tom Brady is getting on the field, He's
getting out there in the preseason. How could the Browns
not have Jacoby Brissette out there? That was certainly the
case in their first preseason game against Jacksonville where Jacoby
didn't play. And it's like, I don't understand how Brissette
(32:38):
isn't getting reps out there when as of right now,
he's the Week one starters unless they make a move
for Jimmy Garoppolo and it is getting late here. If
they're gonna add him and expect him to start Week one,
Jacoby is gonna be the guy. I don't know why
he hasn't gotten more run in the preseason. Get him
out there. He's on a brand new team, certainly not
a finished product. I just don't understand what the Browns
(33:00):
have done. If Tom Brady is getting out there with
the Bucks, I don't know why Brissette hasn't gotten more
run than he has so far. Yeah, I mean, look,
you could say, and you can. You can get up
in arms about Tom disappearing for a week or two.
I went to the combined Titans Bucks practices last week
and got a full view of Kyle Trask and Blaine Gabbert.
(33:20):
And you realize then why Tom Brady can do whatever
he wants. All you gotta do is watch that for
about thirty minutes and you know about all that you
need to know. Um, when it comes to the Browns,
I don't know what they're doing either, Uh, they somehow, Look,
the Bears are awful, we know this. The Seahawks are awful.
(33:41):
We know this. There are a couple of teams in
the league. It's just like, my gosh, this looks like
an absolute disaster. But somehow the Browns still trumped him
for having the worst off season. With everything that's gone on,
we don't know, you to your point, we don't. We
don't know if Jimmy Garoppolo is part of some kind
of larger plan or not. But we do know that
Jacoby Brissette is a I that, yes, serviceable, has started
(34:03):
in the league, but he's closer to Ryan Fitzpatrick than
he is Josh Allen and Ryan Fitzpatrick should be getting
reps in the off season. He should be getting reps
in the preseason games. Especially if you're Jacoby percent and
you're working with a bunch of guys that are new
against dudes that aren't wearing your uniform that you're not
used to playing with in practice every day. There's no
(34:24):
benefit to him not playing. And you can't just say, well,
you're trying to keep him healthy. I mean, look, he's
all you got. I understand that, but you have to
take that risk in this case, unless you're just punting
on this season because you think, all right, well, with
the Shawn out for a double digit amount of games,
we're not going to be able to survive in this
a f C. But that's a real cynical bet to make.
(34:46):
That's a real cynical bet to tell your fans, Hey,
you know this was about the future. Anyway, we knew
he was gonna be suspended, and at this point in time,
we're not gonna risk it with Jacobe because we know
that that's just a stopgap measure. We're looking to turn
twenty three, baby, Like, that's a that's a tough one
to throw out there. If I'm Jacoby, I want to
be out there just so again game reps, but more
(35:09):
than anything, work with these receivers, work with this offensive line,
work with the guys, get more and more fluid and
used to dealing with Kevin Stefanski and the offensive coordinators,
on the sidelines, the quarterback coaches, all of those little things.
Because it's not like your Tom you've been there for
a few years, not like your Aaron Rodgers and you've
been there for over a decade. In this case, you're
(35:32):
a guy that's still trying to learn how Cleveland does
things so that you could help them win football games
in two weeks. Yeah, that's how I see it. I
think it's case by case, depending on who gets any
time in preseason games. If it's Matthew Stafford and he's
been in the league for over a decade and you
don't want to try them out there in the preseason,
(35:53):
I totally understand that. If it's Jacoby Brissett and he
hasn't been nearly as successful and he's on a brand
new team after spots starting last season. I just don't
get why he wouldn't be out there more. I know
they're gonna be different philosophies, and I know teams are
gonna approach this and have, uh, you know, different views
(36:15):
on who should get how many reps and how often
do you play in the preseason and all of that.
I look at Jacoby Brissette more so like Davis Mills
last night. Davis Mills is playing into the third quarter,
and Davis Mills for a rookie, pretty good with the
Texans last season, all things considered, and he's getting into
the third quarter. And I look at the Browns and
(36:35):
I'm like, I think that should be your plan. I
have no idea what they were doing throughout most of
this offseason. Where you go back to when Deshaun was
originally suspended for six games and then the NFL appealed it,
the Browns still said, well, we're gonna have uh, Deshaun
Watson get the bulk of the first team reps until
(36:57):
we hear otherwise. We're just gonna approach it like normal.
It's like, um, the suspension isn't gonna be lessened. It's
it's gonna be more. He's gonna be there for a
week one. I have no idea why he would get
the bulk of the first team reps. I think they're
just setting up Jacoby Brissette for failure. I don't think
they're planning on this season at all. I just think
they're playing sucks. It just boils down to that for me. Yeah,
(37:19):
and they're in a division that's not going to be easy. Um.
I mean, we we know the Pittsburgh's trying to figure
out their quarterback situation, but honestly think they have figured
it out. We'll just see how fast it gets turned
over to pick it. Uh. Baltimore is likely one of
those teams that is gonna be better this year than
they were last year because they're gonna be healthier than
they were last year. And Cincinnati is playing a first
(37:41):
place schedule, so their record may not be as good,
but their football team may actually be better. So if
the Browns want to win games at all, they're doing
it in a very weird kind of backwards way. That
doesn't I'm not so sure about it. I would just
say that, yeah, all I planned to get to you.
I'm looking down the list here chalk full of ball,
more injuries to discuss, and UH teams on the rise.
(38:05):
That's on the way as well.
