for a free rate quote. Ladies and gentlemen. Jeff Schwartz,
what's up to everyone in Swartzy? Not much, man. I
love this time of year. We have basketball obviously, which
doesn't feel college basketball just doesn't feel right right now.
NBA obviously back uh the end of football season. Uh
(01:29):
and hopefully is much better. I don't know. I don't
know what could be worse. So I got some, you know,
some things to look forward to. Yeah, it's a it's
you know, been been a weird year, been a rough
year for a lot of people. But we do have football,
and we do have a major award that will be announced.
They will be announcing the Heisman Trophy finalists coming up
(01:50):
later on this evening, So we will find out the
most most prestigious award and all of college football, the
Heisman Trophy finalists. Now, there are odds that are out.
If I were to ask you, in what order you
think the odds makers are saying the Heisman Trophy winner
will be? What? What what would your order be if
(02:12):
you have if you had to pick, like the top three,
what order would you go on? Because I have the
actual odds here, and I want to see how close
you are to the actual odds for picking the winner. Okay,
I think likely to least likely. I'm gonna go on
a limb. I don't. I don't think people have him
number one, but I will. I think Trevor Lawrence to
(02:33):
have the best odds alright. Number two, well, Matt Jones,
quarterback from Alabama. Number three will be Davante Smith. Number
four we call Trask. Okay, here is what I am
showing as the current updated odds right now. These are
the odds that I am seeing. These could be different
(02:55):
in different places, and obviously a lot of this stuff
could change after the finalists are now punts. But the
favorite right now at minus one seventy is DeVonta Smith
from Alabama. Mac Jones is too, then followed by Kyle Trask,
Trevor Lawrence, and Naji Harris from Alabama. So you've got
(03:16):
three Alabama players in the top five as far as
Heisman candidates. UM, I know a lot of people expected
Justin Fields is going to be one of these guys.
But when the two worst games that you have are
against the two best teams that you play in a
six game season, thus this the result, and uh, and
Justin Fields is not in the conversation. But does that
does that surprise you? Would you be surprised if it
(03:37):
ended up being Davonta Smith. He's been fantastic, He's been awesome.
Oh year for Alabama. Smith the wide receiver obviously, Um,
besides just being a wide receiver, he's king returner. He's
had a great year returning punts as well. Um. And
when you watch them play against Florida, here here's the
I think what sets him apart as far as you
(03:58):
can say, well, you know the passing is Mac Jones, right,
their quarterback. But do you notice that like a lot
of passes weren't We're kind of were on target and
Devant had had to adjust and make plays. And that's
the difference, right, is that he's these aren't perfect throws.
They're perfect throws. You'd be like, oh, maybe Matt Jones.
Um is the reason why, Um, you know this is happening.
So I think it's a wide receiver. It's so tough
(04:20):
to win the Heisman. Um. Uh, I don't think I
would put a quarterback award, right, So it feels like
running back if you have a great running back, I look,
I would put money on Trevor Lawrence as far as like,
that's a great long shot. If it's a plus fift
plus sixteen hundred, the only thing, the only pushback would
(04:41):
be didn't play every game. Yeah, but he still is
the best player in cultural ball. Yeah. No, I agree,
And and that would be the only pushback. And also,
who knows, maybe maybe people that are voting on the
Heisman don't like his coach because he's allowed mouth, and
maybe they were going to punish him because Dabbush Squinny's
an That would be very obvious something that I would
(05:02):
do as a voter. Okay, that's good, And then that's
that's exactly why you and I will probably never get
a vote because we would hold a grudge and then
we would utilize that grudge. There's too much, there's too
much at stake for them to have me have I mean,
then it really ought to be honest with you. I
mean every offensive I just would be three offensive linement
every year, Like Penney soon would have won the hides
me for me last year. Oh it looks and that's
(05:24):
let me and I've been thinking about this and let
me just because he didn't play this year, obviously he
opted out, but he's the top. I was talking to
Brady Quinn about this. He said, that's the top rated
heist offensive lineman in the draft. Correct, Penny Steel's number one?
Not even probably there's there's Rasha Slatter from Northwestern might
overtake him at some point, but yes, okay, So if
(05:45):
you're the Jets picking it too, let's just assume Jackson
will gets the number one pick and they take Trevor Lawrence.
If you're the Jets picking it too, you can either
take the next best quarterback there, which would who knows,
Zack Wilson, mac Jones feel who knows? And to me,
you've got three options. You can either take the quarterback there,
(06:05):
you can trade the pick for assets, or you can
keep Sam Donald and take Seul. What do you do? Okay,
so the Jets have a left tackle the Conquest, who's
maybe the best rookie left tackle? Yes, I think what
you do if you're the Jets is you obviously have
your your draft board right and you think to yourself, Okay,
(06:27):
if I moved back out of number two, what would
I get at pick ten. Let's say let's just use
a pick ten um. What can I get with my
extra first round pick? What can I get with my
extra second round pick? What can I get next year
with another first round pick? Like you have to do
the math on on that, right if you can, If
(06:49):
you can tell me, I can get your Rashawn Slayer
from Northwestern at ten and I get extra first round pick,
that's worth it in my opinion, than just having pen
a suel getting one pick. Right, Like you, I think
you look to trade back if you're not taking a quarterbacks.
So the conversation is how big is the drop off
from Seoul to the next best offensive lineman and if
(07:10):
it's not that much, then trade back because it's probably
gonna be. Or maybe you want Zach Wilson and you
can get him at ten, which seems unlikely at this point.
Um already by the anonymous like scout quotes are already
at Zack Wilson's hilarious. Um did you see the one
yesterday like he's like too boogie essentially to be NFL quarterback? Well, yeah,
I mean, look he's got a little pizzazz, he's got
(07:32):
a little little little flash to him. And so yeah,
you're you're just waiting before the over analysts that'll play
a role. I'm looking forward to that being an issue.
It just he looks too young to play quarterback. In
the end. He's got a hose though. Man, he's good.
What was it was that a forty yard dart he
threw on the sidelines? That throw the other it's really
good on the on the run, like he's really good
(07:52):
outside the pocket structure plays, which is I think pretty important.
It's very accurate. Um yeah, he's uh yeah. I mean
if people as weren't so insufferable, I would probably be
happier to root for him. Yeah. I mean it's clear.
I mean, you fought Mormons in a bowl game. I mean,
person would not find anyone I watched the Mormons. Um.
But yeah, you know when I when I say about
(08:13):
by U fans on Twitter, oh well we beat you
fourteen years ago, I mean congratulations like that. That's a
great job by b y U fourteen. Yeah. But you
know you could say to him, yeah, but I can
have a beer and you can't. I mean they, I
mean they could have a beer if they wanted it
to choose not to obviously, Um so so Uh. Zach
Wilson has been fantastic this year. There's no doubt about it. Um,
(08:36):
he played great in the bowl game, he lit up UCF.
But you know, the the question will be obviously the
competition that he that he faced. And I think if if, if,
if we're a full season and he was able to
play his three pack twelve opponents and play and play,
you know, another, he might be in the Heisman conversation
as well. But obviously without that, there's no Heisman to
talk for him. So, um, it's hard to win as
(08:59):
a wide receiver. I mean Mac Jones is out. I
think Kyle Trask is out. So if a quarterback's gonna win,
it's Trevor Lords. That's why I think there's value and
putting some money on him. Who would you vote for?
Who do you think? Who do you think deserves the Heisman?
Is it Lawrence deserves? Is an interesting question. Um, I
would probably vote for Davante Smith because he does more.
(09:24):
He does more, he played a full season. Um, you know,
it's it's hard to hold that against Trevor Lawrence. But
I'm also like an outside the box guy, like I
think a couple of years ago J J. Wathingtone m
v P, Like I think that you can you don't
have to give it to the best quarterback every year
the award. Um. You know, wide receivers don't often win
the Heisman. I mean I think the last was Tim Brown.
The last last guy win the Heisman is a wide receiver. God, um,
(09:48):
I jeez, I can't imagine that. I mean, I don't
remember anyone other than I'm trying to have, like because
because Desmond Howard played defense. Um, he's I mean he
won honestly for like a kick being a kick returner, right,
I mean Charles Woodson one, but he Desmond. I think
Desmond Howard was the last one because he was a
(10:10):
kick return and he was a wide receiver. But did
he but did he win for did he win more
for being a wide receiver for kick returner? I think
it was in totality. I don't think he's the um
and they were showing a graphic to where they put
his statistics up or I think it was his statistics
up against Howard um in a wide receiver punt returner.
But I don't remember, Like, I mean, the famous clips
(10:32):
are always of him returning. Yes, yeah, Covant Smith is
going to have clips of him playing wide receiver. First, Um, Yeah,
it's quarterback wide receiver running back. I mean, that's like it. So,
you know, it was one of the craziest like this.
I still remember this because this blew my mind. I
couldn't believe it. Um when I was living in the
(10:54):
South back in uh this is you know, ten twelve
years ago covering college football. Was working at a local
of Ifilliot there in South Carolina, and we were just
kind of talking about the Heisman Trophy at the time,
and it mark Ingram won the Heisman Trophy. He was
the first Alabama player ever to win the Heisman. And
(11:16):
I'm thinking to myself, wait, what it didn't It didn't
even make sense. But he was the first Alabama player
ever to win the Heisman. And it wasn't that long ago.
And so since then, you know, uh it was Derrick
Henry was the other and and and I believe those
are the only two Heisman Trophy winners from Alabama, which
(11:37):
is crazy to think about all the all the national
championships and how good they've been. They don't have that
many Heisman Trophy winners. No, and they don't have a
lot of great quarterbacks either, like the NFL quarterbacks. It's
pretty incredible. I'm looking to the Heisman just list now.
In general, it's pretty crazy to see some of these
names like from way back um in the day, um
like there's no no offensive lineman for its listen and
(12:01):
and it's let me let me throw this at you
because I've thought about this. Now. You do a show
with Steve Hartman here on Fox Sports Radio every Saturday.
I don't know if you know this or not. Steve
has a Heisman vote. I don't know I've ever heard
of that. Yeah, Steve with Steve Hartman one of the
one of the legends of sports talk radio. He is
very proud of his Heisman vote. He does Hartman's Heisman's
every Saturday with Jeff Schwartz here on Fox Sports Radio.
(12:23):
And I've even talked to him about this. And I've
talked to Andy Ferman, who I mentioned when we were
doing the show earlier this week. Andy Ferman has been
doing a sports stalk radio and covering sports for a
long time. He has a Heisman vote as well too,
And I've talked to people with Heisman votes, and I
I asked him, I said, do you feel like there's
(12:44):
a buzz the same buzz with the Heisman Trophy award
as there was in years pasted over the past save
four or five years, do you feel like there's been
the same buzz And they both said no, and and
their voters on it. And I've talked to other people
and they're like, yeah, no, it doesn't feel and here's
my theory. And I wanted to throw it at you.
Do you think because of all the conversation and talk
(13:05):
surrounding the college football playoff and the voting that it's
sort of diminished the attention that the Heisman Trophy award gets? Um?
I because I don't think. I don't think it's it's
got the same gravitas that it did before. It's an
amazing award, it's a hell of an achievement, but I
(13:26):
don't get the same vibe surrounding it that I did
years past watching college football growing up. Okay, a couple
of ways for that. I think One is legacy doesn't
feel as important to players anymore, so like winning the
Heisman is great, but it doesn't feel as special as
(13:50):
winning it twenty years ago did. Like, I just think
the players now like they're they're obviously honored to win it,
but doesn't feel like it's like their goal anymore, right,
like their goals just to get the NFL, win, get
the NFL and play. Like I just say, there's the
like in general, like legacy is not something that players
care about as much anymore. Um. But also, you know,
(14:14):
I think because we see these players play every weekend,
we get a better sense of who they are where.
You know, twenty years ago, not every game was on
all the time, and and like the Heisman was given
to a player that maybe you didn't really see. All
you saw were the highlights and all you saw. We're, um,
you know, we're bits and pieces. We see all these
players all season long. So I don't think that I
(14:35):
think that a lot of us can just make our
own minds up of who the best player was where
we don't. We don't need a body to tell us
who to be. Like Joe Burrow, everyone watched him play
last year. We winning the Heisman, it didn't matter. We
all watched him play and watch how good he was.
Winning the Heisman did not validate his season at all.
We we all do. We watched every snap he played
last season. Um. I think that's part of it too,
when you look back, like you didn't you know, I
(14:57):
didn't watch every snap that Charlie Ward played and while
I was too young. But like you know, the games
are not all all the time, and so the Heisman
I think just solidified your season a lot differently than
it does now. Yeah, no, it's a it's a fair point,
but yeah, it doesn't feel like it's got the same
level of interest attached to it. But you know, if
there was ever a year they were going to give
it to a wide receiver, this would be the one.
(15:18):
I'm curious to see how the odds change when the
actual finalist comes out, when the finalists come out, Yeah, yeah,
because when they do, maybe we'll see some you know,
some some movement there amongst amongst who you would bet on.
But you like Trevor Lawrence at that value plus sixteen hundred,
you're here. He might not even make it tonight to
the finalists. But I think you're looking at probably. I
(15:40):
think Kyle Trask got really knocked down UM against l
s U, and he played well against Alabama. I get that,
but um, without Kyle Pitts, he's been a different guy
that the Flotido tight end um like, I think they
might struggle in the bowl game against Oklahoma without Kyle
Pitts and when you're so reliant on one guy, that's
not good, right, because we saw we saw that, um um.
You know when when Waddle went out for Alabama, the
(16:02):
office didn't stop. But when Kyle Pits has been out
for L s U, excuse me for for Florida, especially
with L s U, the offense was just different. And
that I think concerns me with um with with Kyle
Trasping the finalist. Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how
that all plays out. Coming up later on today. He
is Jeff Schwartz. I'm Jonas Knocks. It is outkicked. The
(16:23):
coverage in for Clay Travis Here on Fox Sports Radio.
We are brought to you by the n h T
s A. It can happen easily. A few drinks become
a few too many, it's time to go and you
think of calling for a ride home. Now, what's the
worst that can happen? You get pulled over, you lose
your license, you totally your car, you kill someone, drive sober,
or get pulled over. Coming up next, it is the
(16:45):
It is a strange story in the NFL regarding one quarterback.
We will get the inside information from a man who
was there at ground zero of the situation, and we'll
have it for you next here on I'll kick the
coverage here on Fox Sports Radio. This is outkicked the
coverage with Clay Travis. It is out kicked the coverage
(17:10):
here on Fox Sports Radio. Jonas Knox, Jeff Schwartz in
for Clay Travis here on FS are UM. We're company
alive obviously from the Geico out Kick studios and coming
up in about ten minutes from now here on Fox
Sports Radio. There's been a punishment handed down in the NFL,
another punishment. We will dive into the details of that
(17:32):
here on Fox Sports Radio right now. Kind enough to
join us here this morning. He covers the Washington football
team for NBC Sports in Washington. He is JP Finley
with us here on Fox Sports Radio, JP, Jonas, Jeff Schwartz.
Merry Christmas Eve to you and we appreciate you popping on.
Good morning. Thanks for having me. Absolutely uh just I'm
(17:54):
gonna make this as basic as possible. What the hell
happened with Dwayne Haskins? Because I saw strip club, then
I saw that it wasn't strip club, it was just strippers.
His girlfriend was there? What actually happened that led to
the removal of his captain ship and then fine, yes,
so I think on some level you gotta get Dwayne
Haskins credit for ingenuity. Um. Here in the DC area,
(18:18):
all the strip clubs are closed due to COVID. UM,
so he kind of made his own and it was
a d I y kid for a strip club. He
made his own at home. Um. There was a series
of videos that emerged on Instagram late Sunday night Monday morning,
and basically what it showed is that they were having
a birthday party for his girlfriend. And I don't know
(18:41):
exactly where they were if to me, it looks like
a hotel conference room sort of thing, you know, a
small meeting room you can rent in a hotel. Um.
I don't know if they were in that kind of space,
or if it was somebody's house or what, but they
certainly had, you know, strippers at this party in a
(19:03):
in a very small space. UM. If you if you
see all the pictures in the videos, like I did,
it looks like, um, his girlfriend was having a kind
of an all day birthday party with probably like six
seven of her friends, which I think is reasonable at
least in our area. You're not allowed that more than
ten people gather, so I don't think that would be
(19:25):
a violation of anything. But at some point Dwayne arrived,
and then at some point strippers arrived, and they certainly
had had they certainly had more than ten people, and
nobody was wearing masks. And all the pictures and videos
I saw, and the fact that Dwayne has now come
out and very publicly apologized for all this, you know,
you kind of don't You can take the kid gloves
(19:46):
off with the well, we think it was this, and
we think it was that. Clearly that's what was going on,
and just an incredibly dumb and selfish mistake when you've
got an entire football team, entire organization taking these protocols
really soon. Washington is one of the few teams in
the NFL that haven't had any active player test positive
(20:07):
um for COVID. If you look at kind of the
the outbreaks we've seemed from the Titans and the Ravens,
Washington has had nothing close to that. And you know,
this is a young guy, right or wrong. The quarterback
position is supposed to be the leader on the team.
This is clearly poor behavior in the middle of the pandemic.
If this was any other year, I don't care if
(20:29):
he builds his own strip club, but you can't do that.
So when Dwayne Hatson's was benched, I was pretty vocal
about like why would we do this? Now? Like why
would you know kyl Aldoni better than him? Why not
let him play? And then I see this decision and
again the whole like parting, I don't care about that,
but the idea that hey, it was being filmed and
(20:51):
it got out there, like the decision making of not
making sure it just was like not out there. Essentially,
is this like a better example of maybe the decision
may king that bother Rivera enough to bench him? What
would be like twelve weeks ago? Now? Absolutely absolutely? And
what when Ron said so? He benched him after a
(21:11):
Week four loss to the Ravens And there was plenty
of reporting that one of the things that was kind
of a that cemented Rod's decision to put him on
the bench is in that Ravens loss, and they lost
by two or three touchdowns, Dwayne led a late touchdown
drive where he connected on a deep pass to Terry
McLaurin that put him over three yards passing for the
(21:33):
first time in his career, and Dwayne was really excited
about that and was celebrating coming off the field. Um,
you know have the end zone the postgame interviews are
done for the national networks. Lamar Jackson was getting interviewed
in the end zone and Dwayne Afkins running off the
field like ran over and like kind of did the
thing where you jumped like a video bomb, whatever you
(21:54):
wanna call it, like jumped in the screen. It was
laughing and jugging with Lamar and then was laughing and
jogging his whole way up to the karroom. And I
think that was just another example of not what Ron
wants from his quarterback. And because here's the thing, because
you know something was wrong because he didn't just bench him,
he moved him the third string. That's what started this
(22:15):
whole process. They got Alex Smith back on the field. Um,
and then two weeks after that, so so Dwayne gets
bench moved the third string. I don't know that this
made national news, but Dwayne was then sick for about
a week where he missed practice. He wasn't able to
come to Washington's next game against the Rams, and all
the team of tell us is that listen, it's not COVID.
(22:38):
It's not COVID. He's passing his COVID tests every day.
But because of COVID protocols, if a player says they're sick,
they can't come to the facility. So Dwayne was just
out of the facility for about a week. That was
week five, Week six. He's over his mystery sickness. He's
able to be back with the team. They let him
travel up to New York for the for their game
(22:58):
against the Giants. The we not the COVID violation then,
because he you're not allowed to do this with COVID protocols.
He checked somebody into the team hotel and there's all
sorts of rumors about who he checked in. The official
word is that it was a family member. But you're
not allowed to do that either. So not only is
this a COVID violation, and if you've seen the picture,
is a very egregious COVID violation, but if his second
(23:20):
one this season, that's why he was fine forty grand
the highest single fine for a player this year with
COVID brules um. All of it adds up totally. JP family.
He covers the Washington football team for NBC Sports Washington.
Joining us here on Fox Sports Radio, Jonas Knox Jeff
Schwartz in for Clay Traviss is outkicked the coverage here
(23:41):
on fs are. What's his reputation, like, what is his
reputation there in Washington? Just from the people that you've
talked to or the people you've been around. Well, I mean,
I've known him now for almost two years, um, and
in speaking with him, he's a nice young man. I
(24:02):
don't think he means wrong. I think he's just young.
He's twenty three. Um. I think he's fairly coddled, or
at least was up until this point. And I think
he just is super immature. And uh, I don't know
if you've ever dealt with somebody that is so cocky
that it's almost obvious they're insecure at times. I get
(24:26):
that vibe from Dwayne, But people that work with him
behind the scenes are just constantly hitting their head against
the wall wondering when is this dude gonna grow up?
When are we gonna get past this stuff? And it's
obvious he has talent, but you know, you get see
the NFL, almost everybody has talent. You gotta especially at
(24:49):
the quarterbacks this you gotta have talent and and smarts.
And I know that there's been some like awful things
said about him, like questioning his actual intellect. I don't
buy that all. I think he's to be a really
intelligent person. I think the common sense is the is
the issue. I don't know how he could roll into
this party Sunday night and not and not have something
(25:11):
in his head go off like, man, I shouldn't be here. Um.
I think most Americans are dealing with that on some level.
Like even even you go to right now, you still
have to run errands, right Like I had to go
to the UPS store a couple of weeks like last
week for Christmas stuff and attacked and I'm like, all right, well,
I'm just gonna wait outside until some of this crowd dissipates.
(25:31):
Like that's just where we are, living in a global pandemic. Um.
So I think coaches, and I mean because they have
this is an NFL organization, they have specific staff members
assigned to help Dwayne. This is the first round quarterback.
You're gonna invest some manpower in this. And I think
people are just incredibly frustrated because he gave this really
(25:54):
what seemed to be a heartfelt, fautful apology where he
spoke to the meat because he wanted to get his
message out to fans. And it's great, but it just
becomes hollow at a certain point. It just it's hard
to buy it when these dumb mistakes keep happening. Do
you think there would have been a harsher team punishment
(26:16):
and harsher words from Rivera which they were harsh if
if he didn't have to play this week? I mean,
I feel like and and he's back at practice, which
really shouldn't be, but he's in the facility because they
don't have a quarterback right now. Would this have been
different like when he had been released, for example, if
they did not need him this weekend. That's a great question.
(26:37):
And I don't know about released, but I think suspended
at least. Um, So here's my kind of my my reasoning. Um.
When Ron Rivera took over the Washington job in January, Uh,
it was pretty clear that Trent Williams and Quinton Dunbar
were done with the organization and wanted out. Ron thought
(26:58):
he could kind of change their minds set up meetings
with both guys. Both meetings went poorly, and at that
point it was very obvious these guys weren't going to
be in Washington anymore. But Ron didn't kind of react
in the moment. He took his time and got the
best deals he could for both guys, and eventually Dunbar
(27:19):
and Trent were traded for a fifth and a third
round pick more or less, and it was very obvious
that they're done with the organization, but there wasn't like
a hasty reactionary measure. Um And based on that, I
think the same thing with Dwayne. I think if they
didn't need to play him, I think people would have
suspended Dwayne for the rest of the year and then
(27:40):
worked on shipping him out when we get to January
or February. UM And I still don't think Haskins is
gonna be part of this team in UM I don't
know how they deal with this going forward. This year
has going so poorly between Dwayne and the coaching staff.
But doesn't mean I wrote a column for my website
(28:04):
NBC Sports Washington yesterday, Haskins put Rivera in such an
awful position because his choice is either to to punish
Dwayne Haskins right now, which he deserves, But if he
cuts him or releases him, he's just punishing the other
guys on the other fifth and two guys on the team,
because they've worked they if the Giant flew to the Ravens,
Washington can beat Carolina and clinch the division title. And
(28:27):
I know it's easy to mock a division title at
seven and nine or eight and eight, but to the
guys in that building, it matters, and they've worked really
hard for it all year, and they've had a hell
of a comeback story. They were one in five. If
they can finish seven and nine or eight and eight,
there's real momentum to build up that. For one, they
have an impressive young defense. So if Ron suspends Dwayne
(28:48):
Now and Alex can't play and you have to roll
with Taylor, heineke that to disservice to his teammates also,
So Ron's in the rock in a hard place. I
think he'll I think he'll deal with this much more
dramatically in the off season. JP Family covers the Washington
football team for NBC Sports Washington, joining us here on
Fox Sports Radio. Jonas knocks Jeff Schwartz here on Now
(29:09):
kicked the coverage. What is going on with Alex Smith. Um,
what's what's the injury? Because we're seeing, you know, sore calf.
We're seeing and obviously we know the the issue with
it with the leg, and we're wondering how his body
would hold up and that leg would hold up throughout
the course of the season. But what can you tell
us about his status? So there's there's what I can
(29:31):
tell you officially is that Ron says he's hopeful Alex
will be back. Um, Alex says he's hopeful that he'll
be back this week. That's that's kind of the official word.
But what I've seen with my eyes now twice last
Friday practice, Alex Smith basically did nothing. He was off
to the side. He threw a couple of passes while
(29:52):
he was just kind of standing still while the other
quarterbacks you know, went through individual drills and then a
little bit of team drills before they kicked the meat
you out. That was last Friday. He didn't play Sunday.
They ruled him out. Yesterday at practice, I saw Alex
doing the exact same thing. So he's not even stretching
with the team. He's kind of just standing there while
the other quarterbacks stretch, and yesterday I saw him throw
(30:15):
a couple of little passes on the side, but not
going through te drills. My eyes tell me it's gonna
be Dwayne playing. Um, I don't think they go through
all of this procedural stuff with the NFL to work
out a plan to have Dwayne at practice where he's
got to wear this special mask and all these things,
unless they think he's gonna play. Maybe Alex is closer
(30:37):
to a recovery. Maybe they really can. What Ron has
said is that he's willing to Alex doesn't need to
practice all week. If Alex says he can go Sunday morning,
they'll just roll him out there. It could be a
true game time decision. So that wouldn't shock me if
they really wait till the last second. But my eyes
tell me it's gonna be Dwyne. Maybe that'll change. Unfortunately,
(30:59):
in Washington, with the COVID protocols, when they go inside
the practice, they have a bubble that they practice inside.
When there's bad weather, the media can't go inside this
year with COVID. The weather forecast today in Washington is terrible,
so I expect them to be inside, which means I
won't be able to see what happens. Tomorrow's Christmas. So
it's a closed practice. So yesterday was our last real
(31:22):
look at what's going on. It's a quarterback position. I'm
sure that just Hey, when you guys can't go to
the practice, I know the media, the media can't be here. Shucks, guys. Um.
The Alex Smith thing is is really interesting to me
because I feel like it's not even just an injury, right,
It's just like his leg is not working right now,
Like I think they're saying sore calf, but like I
think there is cause for concern. He's probably done for
(31:43):
the year, right, I mean, I don't know how his
newly erected calf muscle just decides to be better now,
I feel I just my personal opinion. I know medical
background for this. I just feel like they kind of
got the most out of his leg they could this year,
and this is probably dayne haskins him to finish down
the stretch. Am I wrong for thinking that's kind of
where we are at? I wouldn't say you're wrong at all.
(32:07):
I think maybe you're maybe you're you know, maybe you're
kind of jumping to a conclusion. But I think there's
plenty of evidence to support that. They're calling it a
mild cast strain. I think if there was a regular
old mild cash strain, he wouldn't have missed this much
time he missed. He missed the second half of the
Niners game, and he missed the entire game against the Seahawks.
(32:29):
And now he's not practicing still. They said he was
limited on the technically on the injury report yesterday, he
was a limited participant in practice. I didn't see that,
but maybe that changed after this one. It's like one
rep and practice you're limited. Like the threshold for that
is not very high, right, And I think, I think
to your point, because it's the calf muscle in that
(32:51):
surgically repaired white leg, which they put everything back together,
it's entirely possible. Kind of the wires aren't matching all
like they were before. Um. I just not only do
I think it puts real jeopardy. There was a growing
thought that you bring Alex back for because no matter
(33:12):
what they do with the quarterback position, if they draft somebody,
if they saw him, somebody Alex at you we call
some about twenty one million bucks next season. It has
value because he can either help develop a rookie or
he can play for you. Now, I think you've got
to question that, and I think this is a little
bit of a reality check about the state of his
(33:33):
right leg. He is JP Family. He covers the Washington
football team for NBC Sports Washington. Great stuff with us
here on Fox Sports Trading you get him on Twitter,
A good follow if you need anything from the Washington
football team, any of the details as to what the
quarterback position will look like for the remainder of the
season at JP Finley NBCs on Twitter. JP. We appreciate it, man,
(33:56):
thanks so much. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Thanks
very much, got the same to you. This is outkicked
the coverage with Clay Travis. Now, this is appropriate, all right,
This is appropriate because the team of America, the Hawaii
(34:17):
Rainbow Warriors, are playing later on today in the New
Mexico Bowl. Now it's the New Mexico Bowl Jeff Schwartz
in Texas for whatever reason, but it is still the
New Mexico Bowl and they'll be taken on Houston later
on today. So those damn Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. Very very
appropriate time Saturday that the chaser game you'd watch on
(34:40):
a late Saturday night. Um, I remember growing up as
a kid. I used to have the Lowa Bowl on Christmas. Yeah,
you see me because the Bruins were always in it.
That's how That's how I remember. They were like, you know,
seven and five every year and going to the Lower Bowl. Um,
I've been it's been nice to watch some Bowl games.
I mean haven't been the best of games really be
you played really well the other night, But like yesterday
(35:02):
Memphis it was to ten. What what if Brian said
they drugged them or they shut them down or something.
It's like it's like Jeffrey Dahm or doing updates, like
everything's like a dismemberment. They cut their throats. It's just
it's NonStop with this guy. He's a wild man on
the updates. What do you want from I mean, you
(35:22):
know it's I've told he's the most exotic man in
in sports talk radio. Just like I don't have a
good I don't have a good vocabulary. I use kind
of basic words and so I'm gonna have to go
the source, tell you get and get a But yeah,
it was they drugged them or dragged him or drug
him or shoveled him or something. Um, so they have
(35:43):
never been the best of you. What's your what's your
what's your prediction against the spread? Today? Let me look
at this game up here. From what I'm seeing, Hawaii's
getting ten points? See ten or not nine and a half. Yeah,
it feels a very very much a play on the Hawaii. Well,
we can't call Rainbow boy Is anymore the Hawaii Rainbow.
I'm calling Warriorbow Warriors. I couldn't care that this isn't
(36:05):
the Washington football team controversy here or the Cleveland Indians
no more. I'm i still calling the Rainbow Warriors. Like
this is like organ in organ State ditching the Civil
War name and everyone just like I just call it
the game formerly known as a Civil War. It's just
it's just like when it's like sometimes I feel like
we go a little too far. Yeah, well, I think so.
(36:27):
Welcome to By the way, this is out Kicked the
coverage Jonas Jonas knocks Jeff Schwartz in for Clay Travis
from the Geico out Kick Studios, and we are going
to hear about a punishment in the NFL worried well,
a punishment of swords coming up here in just a moment.
But we'll let you know we are brought to you
by the n h T s A. Do you think
it's okay to drive stone? The truth is your reaction
(36:49):
time slow way down. When you're high, you not only
put yourself in danger, but everyone around you. Stopped kidding yourself.
If you've been using marijuana in any form, do not
get behind the wheel. If you feel different, you drew
have different. Drive high. Get a d u y uh
your guy, Juju Smith Schuster, Um, listen, man, he loves
his TikTok or his Insta face or or or snap
(37:12):
face or whatever they're called. And um, he has made
an announcement. Jeff Schwartz. I don't know if if he's
punished himself, if this was handed down by the team,
But here was Juju Smith Schuster on the subject of
dancing on the opposing team's logo before kickoff. Honestly, I
was dancing when we were undefeated. I was you know,
(37:34):
I was dancing. Let me lost our three games. Um,
I'm not going to change the person who I am.
I think let's getting to the point where my teammates
are being asked this question my coaches me asked this question.
I saw it more as uh, you know, not no
intention of disrespect and just more inten just uh, you
know my fans. You know I'm big on social media
the positive, and you know, doing stuff like that, you
get the positive negative. So for the betterment of you know,
(37:57):
my stuff and my teammates, I'm gonna stop you know,
dancing on the logos. All right? Who told him to
stop dancing? Or is he doing this? Um? But here's look,
here's and he said, he said, he said. The issue
with the dancing again, I don't care dance as much
as you want. He's consistent, right, winner loss he's dancing.
(38:18):
It's the distraction for everyone else has to answer questions
about it, like that's why he's stopping it. It's not. Again,
it's not that the act of just him dancing by himself.
It's that I'm sure Tom was like, dude, we're losing. Man.
The last thing I got to hear about is you
dancing every time? Like that's what it is. It's again,
it's not. It's not like an indictment on juju dancing.
It's just the fact that it creates a talking point
(38:40):
that I'm sure that Mike Tomman would rather not talk about. Yeah.
I was thinking, when Mike Tomlin applied for the job,
do you think he'd have to answer these questions? No.
I mean look before before I got on today, I
made a TikTok and no one, no one questions me.
I'm having a great day though. That's partably why right,
we're having a great show. So if I struggle and
you know that the Christian come after me, yeah, next thing,
(39:00):
you know, bo our executive producers gonna like cut the
cord and take you take the old unit down. I
mean he's not He's a very violent man. That bow
Ben said. More out of the NFL and I'll kick
the coverage next
