different now with Rick new Heisel. Here's Softy and Dick.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
All right, big thanks to our friends at Taco Time,
as we have planned our flag today at the five
twenty Bar and Grill here in Bellevue, Brazens Randy, Joseph, Cody, Joey,
the entire crew here Taylor. We love him and we
love being out here. We also love winning. We also
(00:49):
love making bets and having them come through. And that's
what our friend Rick new Heisel is doing right now.
Four and one in his last five picks on the air,
I'm sorry. Five and one in his last six selections
on the air, including Notre Dame, Slamming and I mean
slamming Navy last Saturday to get back in the wind
(01:10):
column after a loss with Wake Forest and Florida. Stay you,
my friend, young man, are on what we like to
call a run.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Congratulations, Hey I met wake Forest. I missed it by
a week. They waited the next week to knock off
the big Virginia team. I missed it by a week.
But I'm happy to help anybody in need.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah, well you're helping us. Man, We appreciate that. But
you're back over five hundred and six and five. We'll
get your pick of the week coming up here in
about twelve minutes. But let's just go back to Madison. Man,
what in the heck happened at Wisconsin? Huskies go out
there and they lose thirteen to ten to a not
very good Badger football team. Explain that one.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Well, unfortunately it was an uncharacteristic off night for the offense.
I'm looking at the statistics here and why Well, the
numbers aren't far off from when I think there were
too many drives that ed in three and out, you know,
four drives in college football now with the new clock
rules where they are letting the clock run and you
(02:13):
go out of bounds and the clock starts again, they're
trying to get everything down to that NFL window of
three hours, you don't get that many drives and when
you have four drives and listen, Luke Pickles a defensive guy,
he's going to have a good defense every time out.
And that's the case this year. They just don't have
an offense. And that was the case again this last Saturday.
(02:34):
They oh just barely over two hundred yards of offense.
You can't go three and out four times, so you're
wasting opportunities to distance yourself from them. And the longer
you teep up keep a home team in the game,
the more that crowd gets excited and the more they
become involved. And that's exactly what happened.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
Rick. The Dodgs are up ten to three at halftime,
and I tweeted only half in jest, really, can we
just put our knee down every possession in the second
half and punt and win ten to three? Because that's
how bad the Wisconsin offense was. Their leading passer was
their punter, and you gave them a touchdown by fumbling
the ball in your own seven on a pass play.
So as a coach in the second half, when you've
(03:14):
seen a first half play like that for the Wisconsin offense,
do you maybe go into more conservative mode and say, listen,
we're just gonna play to win this game ten to
three or ten to six.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
You have to be able to adapt to those kind
of situations and find ways to get one more points
than the opponent. That's exactly right. And as I look
at the second half, you know, you go out the
first drive, there's a fumble, the second drives the three
and out, you went minus seventeen yards, then you miss
the field goal, then you punt again, and then you're
(03:47):
out on downs. I mean, that can't that's a formula
for disaster. And unfortunately that's what took place.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Well, and now there's you know, a question about kind
of maybe a little motivation, right, and we're talking to
a man motivator here, Dick and Rick Newall a Northwest
champions two.
Speaker 5 (04:03):
Thousand and two pulled that out.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Of a mass when the Huskies were four and five
and they found a way to win three games in
a row. So I don't know, I mean, do you
need to motivate these guys as much as you did
back in the day, because I mean, you got nil
money on the line for next season for these guys.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Now, Rick and l e l money on the line,
and there's still that coveted idea of ten wins. Ten
wins is a is a magic number in the world
of college football. A ten wins season is still worth
its weight in gold, and it's one thing that everybody
kind of you know, remembers with a with a badge
(04:40):
of pride. So the fact that you're six and three,
you got Purdue, You've got who's next week, the Ucla Ucla,
and then you've got Oregon. You win those three games
and go nine and three and go to a great
bowl game, You're gonna feel real good about yourself.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Should we just assume that because they're back at home,
that this is a blowout against Purdue, and that Demand
will be Demond and all these guys will be themselves
because that's how they always are against mediocre to bad
teams at Husky Stadium.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
See the problem with that is we assume that they
were going to go beat Wisconsin. We have to get
a great effort. We have to get back to being
the team that we've seen be really consistent over the
course of the season, in particular Demond, and if Demand's
the leader that I think he is that I saw
in that practice field, he'll get everybody's attention to get
(05:35):
that accomplished.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Well, this is a Purdue football team that's lost sixteen
consecutive Big Ten games going back to the last game
of the twenty twenty three season. Ryan Walters was their
head coach a year ago, and now they got Barry
Odam who was with Walters at Missouri a few years back.
But honestly, what you know of this Purdue team, is
there anything that should concern anybody?
Speaker 3 (05:54):
Honestly, Well, they're going to play hard. Barry Odoms one
of those hard charge and guys. But if you're looking
for some measure of motivation, the Huskies on that defensive
side are playing for Ryan Walters, and this is a
chance to show Purdue that they let go a really
good coach and let's let's go play our tails off.
For coach Walters, that would be a great evening for
(06:18):
him to remind those folks that made that decision that
he still has a lot in the tank.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
You mentioned the UCLA game next week.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
It could be the last time the Huskies face the
Bruins at the Rose Bowl. What do you think of
the judge yesterday denying a requests for the restraining order
that would prevent UCLA from moving to Sofi Stadium seems
like it opens up the door for the Bruins.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Yeah, you know that that lease was probably ill advised.
It's pretty favorable to the Rose Bowl, but I think
Dan Guerrero thought there was no better place to play
now that they're so far. Truthfully, if UCLA wants to
make a move and become a football school and one
that wants to play for big prizes, they got to
find a way to get a stadium right there in
(07:04):
campus or at least in Westwood, UH, and get people
involved in the thing and make it feel like a
home field advantage. And I don't know that there's anybody
in the administration that really wants to push that kind
of energy towards that stuff. So Sofi is a little closer,
but it's still a band aid.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
UH.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
UCLA needs to figure out another way if they really
want to become a player in the football side of things.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Well, Rick new Heisl's with us courtesy at Taco Time.
I'm gotta Taco Time pick of the Week coming up
in a minute. I saw where Rick George the Colorado
ad is gonna step down, and I remember that great scene.
A couple of years ago and they beat TCU and
the opener and him and Dion were hugging it out.
Speaker 5 (07:45):
Remember that after the game, everybody's happy.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
And I don't know, I mean, with Rick George stepping
down and Dion's health problems he's having, you think Deon
Sanders is long for Colorado.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
I'm gonna say what I've said all along. I think
you're going to see him on game day with coach Saban. Yeah.
I think that's coming now. I haven't talked to him.
I have no indication that that's the case. But this
job is hard and he doesn't want to lead campus
to go recruit and that's just a I mean, he
(08:17):
knew his son, and he knew Travis Hunter. That was
a great place to start, but those guys don't grow
on trees. You've got to find guys, and if you're
just doing it by the phone, good luck with that.
And I just think he's going to look at himself
and with his help, say do I really have the
energy to go out and start chasing? And the answers
probably know, which is why he's going to take a
probably lucrative offer to go hang out with those guys
(08:40):
on the ESPN desk Rick.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
I saw Colin Coward making a comment today on a
statement you made about Notre Dame this week, basically, you know,
kind of saying their brand is helping him in the
CFP rankings.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
Maybe you know, explain why you think that is.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Well. I think they need to build a statue for
Jack Swarbrook, who was one of the four guys that
built the college football playoff to the twelve team deal
that it is now. He and Greg Sankee and Bob
Bowlsby and a guy the named Craig Thompson who is
the commissioner of the Mountain West. Those are the four
architects of it. And the deal was that you'd get
to twelve teams. Notre Dame wouldn't be able to get
(09:18):
one of the buys because they wouldn't win a conference championship.
And now that's no longer a rule after one year,
so now they can get a buye they certainly have.
They can draw up whatever schedule they want. They have
four games that really looked like they were going to
be tough, and they're gonna if they go two and
two of them, they're going to get in. And it's
(09:39):
ten and two Notre Dame because they're, you know, like
the rolling Stones. I guess it's good for college football,
but it's the easiest path out there. And for that,
Swarbrook deserves a statue. Maybe not touchdowns, Jesus, maybe not
that level, but something close.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
Rick Heil is with us. What are the odds of
Johnny money Line Materier tripping up Caitlin de borr and
Alabama and Tuscaloosa Saturday?
Speaker 3 (10:09):
You know, I like their chances defensively because they're a
pass rush unit, and Alabama really can't run the ball.
They just haven't. Even with jam Miller being back, they
haven't started to run the ball. They're down in the
SEC stats on that side of it. So if you
can harass Ty Simpson and make him a little bit erradic,
(10:30):
you've got a great chance in this game. The question
is can Matier throw the ball down the field. Against
Tennessee he averaged less than six yards in attempt, and
to me, that's the number that's got a change. I
think he was like one hundred and fifty yards. If
he gets two fifty and that number goes to eight
or nine, they're gonna be tough because he is running
the ball he had eighty yards against Tennessee.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Texas and Georgia at Georgia. Who do you like and
is this an elimination game for Texas or do you
think a three loss Texas team could still make the
champion or the College Football Playoff.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
I do think a three loss Texas team could make
the championship, but only I think if they win this one.
I think the game against A and M at the end,
if it were, you know, an overtime thriller or something
like that, they could still get there by virtue of
having this win and catapulting a little higher. I like
their chances in this game because this is not your
(11:25):
normal Kirby Smart team. This team's more of a I guess,
really just a fast team on defense. They don't have
a pass rush. They're last in the SEC in facts,
last middle of the pack in pass defense, and Arch
is thrown for seven hundred yards in the last two weeks.
So I just think that Texas has a chance. Starts
(11:47):
kind of got Arch on track and the receivers are
now understanding what where to be when to be there.
I like Texas in this game. It feels like when
Start took Texas to Alabama a few years ago.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Yeah, yeah, well, Rick, before you get your pick. The
Jetfish rumors just continue to fly. He had to address
him again on Monday. I don't know if you heard
that or heard the clip, And he came out and
just said, Look, people don't know what the hell they're
talking about. All these lists I'm on for coaching jobs
across the country. You know my family doesn't want to
be here. Well, it's because my kids are in high
(12:22):
school and Tucson has got nothing to do with them.
Not liking Seattle. Blah blah blah. I don't know if
people really are buying it. To be honest with you,
I'm not even sure if I'm buying it entirely. But
I mean, why you just call it for us, right,
I mean, you give us a top of Time pick
of the week every week. Anyway, just call it is
Jetfish the coach of the Huskies next year? Is he
coaching somewhere else?
Speaker 3 (12:42):
I'm saying he's the coach of the Huskies next year. Yeah, yeah,
I'm saying that you don't have anything to worry about.
I think he's telling you the truth that his daughter
wanted to finish school with some classmates there in Tucson.
So they're letting them do that. The only thing that
could happen that would maybe change his mind. If I'm
(13:03):
thinking back to the great words of Bear Bryant, Mama called,
you know, That's Ford is where he went to school.
But I don't see that happening. I actually think Lane
Kiffin's gonna take that job. And so I'm gonna say
Jed is in Seattle, and I think Jed's happy in Seattle.
I mean, I was with him this summer. That wasn't
an act. He likes where he is. At Rick.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
It's time to get over five hundred on the season.
He's already over five. I thought he's six and six
and five, six and five. I'm cattled back alright, alright too.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
I'm going with the number eight two Baja Tacos for
my Taco Team Time pick of the week, along with
Tater fries and Coke.
Speaker 5 (13:40):
What is your Tacola Time pick of the week.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
Okay, So I really kind of was sniffing around this
under with Iowa and USC on Saturday, it's supposed to
be a big rainstorm in LA and we saw that
play out last week with the Oregon game. But I'm
going I'm not. I'm gonna take Memphis on the road
at East Carolina. I think Memphis is a dang good team.
They were gonna be the team that was going to
(14:06):
the CFB. They got knocked off by Tulane. I think
Memphis's offense is too good. They're a little I think
a two point underdog in Greensboro. Give me the Tigers.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
I'm gonna give you a little early Christmas gift. I'm
gonna give you two and a half.
Speaker 5 (14:22):
How about that?
Speaker 2 (14:23):
Memphis plus four a half on the road the East Prates.
I love it all right?
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Right before I leave, guys, yes, before I leave. I
don't know if any of my old guys are listening.
Tomorrow night, They're gonna have a little soare over at
the university for the two thousand Rose Bowl championship team
over Purdue, the two thousand and one Rose Bowl champs,
and I can't be there unfortunately. I know the shutdown
(14:50):
just ended, but I couldn't guarantee a flight back to
my gigs in New York. So I just want to
say to those guys, what a thrill it was to
coach them, What a thrill it was to be on
the Rose Bowl field wearing Husky purple. And it's a
memory I'll have for the rest of my life. And
(15:11):
I could not have gone down that tunnel with better
bunch of guys, Joe Dogs. It was a privilege of
a lifetime.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
Yeah, they'll be honored this weekend at the game. Great stuff, man,
we're talking a week Coach, appreciate.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
It, Thanks Coach.
Speaker 3 (15:25):
All right, guys, take care now.
