Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is an iHeartRadio New Zealand podcast. Welcome along to
another episode of Page to Talk with Lee Hart and
Matt Ward, all thanks to ugle one lead. That's right,
(00:28):
and we have got well we say it every week,
but it's true every week. We've got a very big
show today, very special guest beaming in very shortly.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
That's right, a massive show. We've got a guest.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Well, we'll tell this Joseph Parker basically beaming in from
Ireland on a zoom call. As you see the computer
down the front there, that's for a zoom call. A
bit of admin right up of off the front here.
We've only paid for the trial plan. Zoom option gives
us about twenty five minutes, so we really need to
sort of rattle through this. I think Joe's got Zoom Pro,
(00:57):
so he may be able to stand on the lane
longer than us. We've only got the amateur version, but
at the end of the day, if we jump off,
there's not much point him been on there with Zoom
Pro anyway.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Why I got the basic package.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
We've already chewed up one or two of those minutes already.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
You did right there, so we really should probably read
along with it. But before we talk about that, just
a bit of end house admin. Of course, last week's
episode was a Mysterious Planet special. When we talked about
a TV show I made a number of years ago,
that's a two part thing, so we did the one
part last week. We're taking a break this week from
amazing special guests and the Mysterious Planet Special will continue
(01:32):
next week.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
But how about this week a big guess boxing?
Speaker 1 (01:34):
You into it big time, big time, especially because he's
on the call and he can hear me.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
But before we do that, just to you know, put
some context to this boxing story. While Joe's just getting
ready there, here's a bit of footage we just.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Want to run first.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
You got some of Joe Parker.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
No, no, this is of me right.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Pretty powerful stuff just because show you never stop learning
in the ring there and well, what a good point
to bring in out yesterday.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Yeah, you really crowbard yourself in there somehow. But we've
got a very special guest waiting for us online, beaming
in from the UK BEG Fight this weekend, taking on
Fabio Wardley, the one and only Joe Parker. The intro
I usually do the intro, Yeah, it's which as I.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Kind of know him a bit better. He's kind of
a made of mine.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Well, it doesn't mean you have to kind of you
know what I mean, if you might just open up
a bit more to me. Okay, we'll come this far.
You can do the you've done that, you might carry
on pretty much halfway through it, well pretty much all
the way through it. Joe Parker, thanks so much for
joining us. Beaming in from double j JP.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Do you perfect?
Speaker 1 (02:49):
I don't know if you likes being called okay, Joe.
First question, you're beaming in from Dublin. Great to see.
You're looking sharp, You're looking fit. How are you feeling.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
I am feeling fantastic. I'm feeling on top of the world.
I'm ready to rock and roll.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Give me, give me to the fight now. Fantastic. Apologies
to that first question.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
There, you're looking lean, looking mean, what's different with this camp?
It looks like you're starting to get things down to
a bit of a finite a scientific art.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
I think with this camp's been it's been a lot
more balance in terms of rest and recovery. I got
I've read light therapy, I have a very chain, but
I've got massage and everything's a lot more scheduled like
and also balance, which is which is key, you know.
So now I'm like tomorrow, I want to spa, I
want to go out down and I want to smash
these bire partners and practice all the movies they've been
(03:38):
working on and then make it happen on fight.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Night because it's all about getting energy levels right at
the right time, right, and this is great for us.
This is daytime here, your nighttime. You're training at night,
is that right?
Speaker 4 (03:50):
Yeah? We all we're training. We shifted it this week
and next week where we're training, you know, nine thirty
ten pm, which is around the set at the same
time we want to be fighting. And I think we've
adjusted it so that when fight time comes with prime
and really but all of these things are great. Thing
is to each camp you're learning more and more and
I do feel like with this camp, it's just it's
(04:11):
better than every other camp we've had.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Do you have a do other fighters do that?
Speaker 3 (04:14):
I mean, is this I mean, I've heard of it
before a little bit, but you're really sort of embracing
that kind of stuff in.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
I'm embracing it. We've got we've got a good structure.
We've got a good program. And you know, when I
talk to other fighters, some fighters are like, nah, that
that stuff doesn't really matter, you know, training a nighttime
and training at the time you're fighting, or adjusting your
sleep or adjusting according to to to to fight week.
But I've found that in the last few fights that
it's really worked, really worked, adjusting the schedule and changing
(04:42):
it up.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
Because I was under the impression that just because it's
obviously quite light there, that you were sort of get
you've been gagging to get onto the podcast for quite
a while, that's why you stayed up late. Is it
just sort of shifting it out slidely you're sleeping a
bit longer and you have breakfast at midday or how
does that all work?
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Yes, it's like the closer we are to the fight now,
we're like sleeping at three a m. Waking up at
eleven o'clock, having breakfast at twelve. So the whole day
it's shifted just a bit, but just just for the fight.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Really, it's actually similar to my schedule.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Yeah, it was just no training involvement.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Yeah, it's just exactly the same. I just I'm not fit.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
Do you know what do you know what is? What
was cue? Right? We shifted at the beginning of this week,
and I had a spiring sessue last night at nine
through ten pm and I did ten rounds, were sparring,
and I felt great. I think it was the best
far that I ever had in a long time. And
I felt sharp, I felt quick, I felt like my
vision was good, my reaction, my reaction was good. Everything's
just flowing nicely and assuming me a lot of confidence
(05:40):
seeing all of this stuff happening in camp. Then I'm
going to put on a great performance.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
And speaking of performance, you're taking on I'm Fabio Wadley.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
What do you know about him? He's got a pretty
good record.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
He's got a knockout capability, I think eighteen knockouts.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
You have to be wary of someone like that.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
And full credit for taking someone on at this stage
when you don't really have to.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
You don't really have to take a fight, right And
everyone told me why didn't you just wait for you sick?
You know? But for me, like time is precious and
time goes quick. As a fighter, I want to be
active and I want to fight if I could, if
I could have my way, I'll be in a ring
four or five times a year, yeah, but at the
moment that doesn't really happen nowadays. So I wanted to
take this fight because I want to keep active. Also,
he's the next best available opponent out there, and it's
(06:24):
for the interim w Championship of the world, and the
winner this fight is the next in line to fight
us to I know I'm next in line, but even
if I waited, I probably wouldn't have got that fight anyways,
because it's really up to U. See what he does.
The Fabua water is dangerous. He's got a big right hand,
he's he's confident, he's got his belief, he's determined. And
one thing is he looks like a he looks like
(06:44):
a thumb, like you know, like he looks like a thumb.
So I want to punch that thumb.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
You can say. I don't think I would say that, but.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
It's a much look at his at his fights and stuff,
as as boxers do. Obviously that's the right hand you're
weary of, I mean, is it? It's how you move
in the ring away from that kind of what you're
just get in your guard up.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
What's your strategy there?
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Strategy is. I do feel like, what's the experience that
I have in boxing? Been in the game for a
long time, But when I do compare well we've both
done in boxing. He's done extremely well coming from a
white collar background, and then to get the fights that
he's had, and also he's got the highest ratio knockout
ratio for the biggest st I have to be worried
of that, but I do have the confidence of myself
(07:29):
that I can take it to it, you know, fight
file or fire. I know that I have a big
right und myself, and it's about placement. It's about timing.
Timing is very important in precision as well. So when
as he goes that way at just depate where it
is in the bold.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
I actually might have to stop you there, leader, take
a quick break, can be back very shortly.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
And we're back on five four three. You got a
question them.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
You've obviously got a very stringent training regime at the
moment that you're doing lots of different exercises of whod
You're doing some swimming, but you're getting a bit of
a hard time from the ladies at the swimming pool.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
You know, like if you're in the pool, right, and
you're swimming and you've been here for thirty minutes and
you're going back, like up and down this lane. And
then like some of these I don't know, I'm not
sure why, but they just coming swim in front of you.
And then they and then when they're summing in front
of you, they don't move. They wait for you to move,
even though you've been here for so long. So like
and then like, as a respect for you know, New Zealand,
(08:27):
now we do sort of move to the side to
give them a bit of space. And then even if
we move to the site, they're moving from of us. Anyways,
again and again.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
These are the little old ladies at their local pool.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
But but I'll tell you this, they're little ladies, but
they're feisty. They are feisty and when they're in when
they're in the zone and doing their swimming, they don't
want to be interrupted. So I said, I was just like,
you know what, so we'll go. I'm done, I'm done,
my swimming is done. I'm going to go to do
the boxing session now.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
And there's obviously a good feeling in the cat there
with you with your crew. I've here you traveling around
in a van like sort of like some sort of
sort of Scooby Doo kind of thing, you know, like
some sort of family man.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
There's a special car that's Caddy. It's a seven s
here that I really is a fifteen seater. So you
can fit many things in this van. You know, you
can fit the camera man to rescue fot, the training partner,
ten spying partners. I can fit treadmills, waits everything. You
fit everything in this car.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
And we've got a bit of a mole in the
camp there.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
I won't Tellyhoters, but he said, you're in pretty good
shape at the moment.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Nutrition is a big part of that. I'm hearing that.
You know, I struggling to get you to wear a
shirt around the place.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
If you could be walking around Dublin with your shirt off,
you know, going to cafes that kind of stuff. You
don't have a shirt on off because you're you're pretty
cat at the moment.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Is that right?
Speaker 4 (09:43):
I think it's important to to appreciate your work. So
so when I'm walking around your thrown shirt on, I
just it's not about it's just about feeling the confidence.
I have never walked on.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Say this and can I don't shoot the messenger, it's
just you know, it's someone in your camera.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
I know, hey make One thing is training.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
You know, between fights, there's only a couple of fights years,
so the nowadays it must be hard. It's basically when
a fight gets canceled like you've had in the past,
and you've got to suddenly take time off then get
back into it again. So fighting regularly is the key,
not just for keeping your ring craft, but also it's
staying in shape.
Speaker 4 (10:22):
You know, fighting regularly is key, right, and it's great
to have fight off the fight off the fight, but
I feel like fighters get ring rusty when they just
go home and just do absolutely nothing and they train
here and there. Right. But I do feel like if
you're living a life of eating clean food and you
have a nutritious in your training and your wrist and
you recover, you've got family time. If you're living the life,
(10:43):
when you come into your camp, you're already in shape.
And I do feel like the last two and a
half years, I've lived the life and that's made the
big difference. You know, when I come into camp, I'm
already in shape and I don't have to get in shape.
I'm here to I'm here to learn and work on combinations, technique,
getting the footwork right, the hands up, I'm not I'm
not having to worry about in my fitting enough. I'm
already fitting, ready to go.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
And it's George and the nutritionus. He's big out of
that team now.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
Yeah, so I feel like I got the best team. Obviously,
me as a fire a, George as nutritionists and shaking
the listening, trainer Andy doing the boxing. He's a very
good teacher, very good coach, Carrie Russell doing the film.
He got Victor Base as my training partner, and Paul
Paul doing the massage. So it's a small team, it's
the best team and we want to see great results
from moving forward.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Is there anything that you treat yourself to once the
fight's over? Obviously got a strict diet, but Burger's donut
spears straight after the fight.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
All of the one burger, two, burger, Freeburger four. Do
you know I still feel like this the Chinese trips.
I've finished all the ones who've sent me before, so
you nice to get a few more there. I know
you're working on other things as well, Yeah, like ice
creams are like cakes. I like muffins. Bas listen, Well,
I just have to calm myself down because I'm just
(11:55):
giving you what excited all this movie, you know what
I mean?
Speaker 3 (11:58):
Tell you what snack and changing we've got you. We've
got your sort of that's for sure. But if you,
if you win that title, which I believe you will,
you may just get a lifetime supply of the good
stuff there. But he speaking of the good stuff, how
about the money good doctor.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
Manucad doctor has been They have actually been very very
good to us. They've looked after us in terms of
in our training camp. You know, there are a big
sponsor of ours. But the honey that we have we
use every day. We use it in the morning, we're
using the evening. We use it at the gym, you know.
And it taste really good too. And I have the best.
I got the strongest honey in my bag, the best honey.
(12:31):
And every time before a big spiing session, I'll take
a big spoon and it gives me energy.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
You did it before a fight as well, before you
go out.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
You have a spoonful that before a spiring session, before
or a big boxing session or before the fight.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
Yeah, I have, honey, and you're obviously not thinking too
much ahead of this nixt fight, but as the would
you be open to another one before the end of
the year.
Speaker 4 (12:50):
I read something if I can fight, you know, get
this fight on the way next week and hopefully everything
as well. I'd love to fight again before the end
of the year. You know, the time in boxing is
not long, so if you can get the opportunity to
keep fighting often, I've already done the building phase where
I was in the n from theory to August. Now
I was just time to use that building face and
turn into fights now. Yeah. Also that the titles are there,
(13:12):
unification and disputed championship of the world, it's all there.
But the more you fight, the more you win, the
more you progress. You want to get closer to that.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
Yeah, yeah, totally.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
And you're obviously in a good headspace and using that,
as you say, to your advantage, wanting to fight off
and a lot of boxes don't.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Once there a time though, perhaps where you found the.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
Politics and so forth of boxing frustrating. You know that
games that go on and boxing, let's face it can
be frustrating to a to a fan, to a viewer,
So it must be worse for boxers, you know, having
having to endure that.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
You'll bang on. I mean, you can get frustrated, and
probably in the past I have been frustrated. Why am
I not getting my chance here? Why am I not
fighting for the title next? But over the years, because
I've been involved in boxing for a while, I've seen
all these politics play out all the time. Like, my
focus now is just to focus on what I can control. Yeah,
And at the time I was in New Zealand, what
(14:05):
I could control was what I did in my off time,
was the training and eating. And now that I have
a fight locked in, I am so much looking forward
to this fight. And I know there's all these other
talks about your next hie to fight U Sick and
you can unify all this other stuff, But all of
that means nothing because I got something in front of
me now. So he used to plait it in the past,
he used to get to me, but now I'm just like,
you know what, it just goes over my head, you know,
(14:27):
on to the.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Next exactly because you've got no control.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
For example, Sick, he may retire, you know, and the
winner of those fight ten pe would take those bolts
is that correct?
Speaker 4 (14:36):
Yeah, if you Stick retires and all the belts become free,
and then everyone will have to fight for these belts.
But even as the winner of this fight is next
time to fight U sick? He might say, you know what,
I don't even want to fight this guy. So you
know you're still in line to fight for the for
the title next, but he might not. It's really up
to him who he fights next. Do you think that's right?
They think they have too much control. I mean that
(14:58):
de mandatory thing doesn't seem to fly at all anymore. Yeah,
you know what, and sometimes I specialate it go Why
hasn't Why are they really following the rules?
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (15:06):
You Stick is probably deciding why make more money fighting Joseph?
Make more money fighting Joshua or Tyson. Sometimes it is
a better money thing as well.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
Actually start you there, take a quick break another I
believe so, and we'll be back with Joe Parker.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
So you Indian.
Speaker 1 (15:21):
The welcome back to Pay to Talk. Joe. Do you
always stick to the same walk out song or do
you change it up? Kind of like the thanks mate
right for.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
The during during training camp and you sort of play
this song, You're like, okay, I remember walking out to
this song, You're like, Okay, I do use this one.
Did you play another one? Go ah, this one sounds
better Okay? And I walk out to this on you
pay another one? You might just sort of like this one.
I know that one, And then on fight week you're like, Okay,
this is this is the one that gives me a
bit of buzz. A bit of buzz gives me good
in this Ye, I'm really to rock the role.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
Be nothing worse to the DJ kind of there you
line it up and he plays it wrong, some kind
of thing that's totally you know, and you've just got
to walk out to it and you can't do anything
about it, you know.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
Yeah, you just got to pick a someone that gets
you up and it gives you Like for me, it's
just like cool, calm, but I know inside that I'm
ready to smash your face that type of song.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
It is it like a coin toss to decide who
walks out first? Or is it based on preference or.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
Pavie Wadley had the wb A mandatry position, which means
he fights for the title next WBA A title and
I have the w BO. Who's who's first in line
to fight for the title. So going into this fight,
I do I do believe that I'm the A side
in this fight. So that means you walk out sick
and you get a noun sicken. But I think they've
been arguing it's for me. I don't really care. Listen,
(16:40):
if they want me to walk out first, and if
they're going to make a big deal about it, I'll
walk out first and I still smash your face.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Yeah, yeah, that's right, because your song will play seconds
that it'll be the song stuck in Brown's head anyway.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Yeah, for me, I mean there's a lot of egos
in boxing right now. I deserve to walk out sticking
on the bigger name or this than that. Who cares?
But all of that means nothing. Everything that happens in
the ring is what's going to mean something.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Yeah, And speaking of the ring, this this event of
course London, the O two.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
You know, I think last time before there.
Speaker 4 (17:07):
Was a loss. Yeah, like a redemption and redemption Yeah arena,
there's my redemption. I want to come back, you know.
And you know what favorite Watery is managed or looked
after by Billing White, the person they beat me at
though two Arena so I need I need that win
over favorite Wardy to go. You know what did why
there you go mate? In your face, I'm getting pumped.
(17:29):
I'm getting pumped. Hey, look you've got you've got stuff
to do. Any more questions then, well, I was just thinking.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
You've obviously got a week or so in London until
the fighters. It it's just strictly focusing on the fight.
I you've got a bit of time to do a
bit of touristy stuff, go check out the London I
and what not.
Speaker 4 (17:43):
Once we get to Once to London, it's going to
be a lot more strict. The schedule is going to
be a lot more tight and also gonna have security
because honestly, the fans in London and England are crazy fans,
and you know what, it's so great to come over
to this side of the world from New Zealand, from
some more from that side of the world and get
the mess of support that we get here. It's truly incredible.
So it's going to be very strict. We're going to
(18:04):
be following the schedule. You know, I'm sticking to the
training times, recovery time, eating times, and once the fight
is done and I want to go on the bus
by the tourist bus, and I want to go visit
all the sites and like I said, eat all that
nice delicious, unhealthy healthy food.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
Well, you're looking shut you look, you look que You're
physically and mentally ready to roll for next week. So
looking forward to chicking out the fight. I think that, Lee.
Unfortunately you've got like the cheap Zoom, like the free zoom.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
Yeah, unfortunately we.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
Only paid for the the trial Zoom package, not the
professional Zoom call backage, so this is probably going to
cut off soon. Anyway, can we get a snack provy
of just the app lower abs perhaps?
Speaker 2 (18:42):
Oh? Yeah, looking good? Looking good?
Speaker 4 (18:45):
Can I get approve of your or.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
I love the Zoom package.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
That's the countdowns going down and then yeah, that's what
you get. You have to have the only fans to
get the rest there. Joe, Hey, Joe, all the best
this weekend. I know you're going to You're going to
smash him. You make new yelland and somehow proud as
you do, and then onwards and upuds to world champion again. Wait,
great to be part of the camp. Now, great to
(19:11):
be part of you. You're in a circle, you know,
what I mean. Cheers Joe's buddy, Thank you.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
Oh, I can't believe you had zoom Pro. But we're
supposed to be the pros.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
Those professional box and maybe it gets zoom proo by
being professional.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Maybe they're responsible.
