(00:00):
And a happy Wednesday. Friends.Welcome to a thought shower. Intern John
is my name. Was a hellof a weekend for you, boy.
I was supposed to be kind ofa relaxing weekend. I was originally gonna
go to Nashville, and then mydogs had about eh four thousand dollars in
(00:21):
medical bills in like a week,so I'm like, perhaps I should save
money and not go. And thenthe last second I was gonna go.
Again. Here we are, though, I'm trying to remember even like what
I did this past weekend because itwas such a cluster of just everything because
we were a little bit of amini vacation. And then on Saturday,
(00:45):
Saturday, I was gonna go toNashville. Last second, take care of
some things, literally cancel my flight. On the way of the airport,
Skittles had like the best day everbecause he got to go to a couple
of his favorite places. He wasvery excited to pay out, dropped off
a camp, even more excited hepicked up from campus. He was just
kind of like, this has beenthe best hour of my life. Can
(01:07):
I do this again? Then lastnight, like an idiot, I stayed
up late to watch playoff hockey, even though I got no skin in the
game. I don't have none ofmy teams are in right, I got
got nothing going on, but Istayed up. And it's one of those
things where it's I think it's calledrevenge procrastination, where it's like folks who
(01:30):
are are like, hack you upearly, like me, you take you
out at night. So it's likewhere you don't go asleep right away because
you want to, like, thiswill be my time to get back and
relax. And that's kind of whatI do sometimes. So last night I
went to bed at I don't evenknow ten. Maybe not great when you
(01:51):
wake up at two forty five, although today slept in three point fifteen.
Look at me. Went to thedoctor. That was excited. I knew
doctor, and uh, for whateverreason, I didn't think, well,
here's what happened. I was kindof surprised. They gave me a physicalth
new doctor, which hindsight dumb,Like, of course, they're gonna not
(02:15):
just take my word for it.They're gonna make sure I'm healthy. So
I wore these use My plan wasgo to the doctor, then go to
the gym afterwards. I wore theselike athletic undies that have hot dog winers
on them. It's very grilling themed. I didn't think anybody's gonna see those.
Then I go to doctor and they'relike, hey, you know,
(02:37):
change down into the robe and this, uh doctor's assistant, I'm not quite
too short. Her title is shea student? Did the exam. I'm
like, this is the most embarrassingthing I've done my entire life. Here
I am, you know, doctorassistant, a student lady who is doing
a fine job, and I'm wearingweener underwear. I'm sure it looked bad.
(03:00):
I'm sure it looked like I wasa purb or something, but legit,
I just, for whatever reason,my mind didn't go to, hey,
the doctor's probably don't want to makesure you're good. It's like dropping
your car off at the mechanic andthey just take your word for it that
kind of time. But anyway, doctor said was good, I'm alive.
I'm well, hopefully having a greatweek of short week two if you go.
(03:21):
Alleena's microphone is the worst if youhave it. Want to hit this
real quick. I disagree with this, but why you shouldn't make friends at
work? According to the experts,I think it's good to have some friends
of work. You need to haveallies. You need to have people you
can trust. Uh experts A NumberOne, you'll get distracted. You might
(03:42):
find yourself distracted by your work friendssat thinking about the task in front of
you. You're wondering about destmate's datelast night, or family drama they're going
through. I don't know, man, Again, I just kind of go
with you're gonna need to have somebodyto bounce things off of, somebody to
kind of be a human with.Next thing they say is that you can
(04:04):
plain about your boss. It mightcome back to haunt you. Now on
the flip side, I will saythis, it's good to have work friends.
But also, yeah, watch whatyou say, you know, don't
out yourself, don't get yourself introuble. I think that's very smart.
I never assume something I say toyour work friend is gonna stay there.
(04:24):
Just like with real friends, yougotta be real careful. Unless a friend
that has no idea what's going on, then you're fine. I think that's
fair. Your coworkers' negative feelings abouttheir job might influence you. I think
that's fair as well. If youhad the coworker or the constantly complaints.
You gotta be careful about your circlebecause if they're constantly complaining, they're not
(04:46):
gonna want to make you think thateverything's fine. They're gonna make you think
that things are miserable too. Ido agree with that. Maybe I'm gonna
talk myself out of this. Thatwould be good. You want to focus.
You want to focus about your skillsccomplishments, not your social life. I've
talked to friends about this in theworkplace where it's a fine line right where
(05:08):
you do want people to be whenthey talk about you, it be about
how good you are at your job, how blessed you know the company is
to have you, not who you'redating. And that is a difficult balance
of like when how do you maintainfriends? I have always kind of gone,
I guess arms distance away if youwill, because I've seen it.
(05:28):
I've like been victim is a strongword, but I've seen when like my
personal life outweighs my real job,and I go, don't like that.
You can use your breaks to bemore productive and efficient for self care.
Okay, they say gonna walk atlunch time something like that. Instead of
(05:48):
spending with your work friend, youcan focus on you an now. I
mean obviously yes, sure, butalso again I think it's just that balance.
I mean, our job is alittle bit different though, Like right
now there's nobody at the radio station, so I can after the podcast get
a walking So I guess there's thatside of the coin, you able to
(06:12):
engage in some friendly competition. Theysaid, you get too close to your
coworkers, you might shy away fromputting yourself out there because they want the
same role as you. I wouldhope not. So. I do think
a real friend would also support youand wants you to do what's best for
you. But you're best for yourselfand go for that gig. If they
(06:32):
don't, then they're not a realfriend. I've never had that happen to
me. I remember when I wasup for the Cane Show. Before I
applied for the job, a buddyapplied for the job as well. I
didn't know the Cane Show was hiring. I was just told that I was
going to I was applying for amorning show on the East Coast. I
(06:55):
know it is this show, andso my buddy applied and that I told
me, hey, like this, see you know I'm a play for a
morning show on the East Coast.I don't know what show it is,
but it could be the same showas you, and I will say that
he said to me, it's gonnabe your gig. I was like,
what do you mean. He goes, this is gonna be your job for
(07:15):
sure, like one hundred and tenpercent, this is gonna be your job.
It's perfect for you. So thatkind of worked out. I do
think having that conversation was very important. You want to maintain some type of
social distance from your job. Ido think that's fair okay, But also
I don't know. I go backto like it's good to have somebody event
(07:39):
to like in our job is alittle bit different. I do think,
despite what Eric says, we're allfriends outside of the workplace, and I
do think for us it's like it'sgood to bond. It help. It
helps with the show camaraderie obviously, but even folks in different departments too,
Like we hang out and we dodrinks, we do happy hours, and
it's it's a fun, fun vibe. Again, I will say, though,
(08:03):
arm distance always the best. Ihope you have a fantastic Wednesday.
I appreciate you listening to thought shower
