Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlie Show. Heres in
the Bonus with Doug Gottley.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
If I really I hope you're doing well, I truly do.
I really I hope you're doing great. So the Boston
Celtics are gonna win their eighteenth title. I hope everybody is.
The Boston Celtics gonna win their eighteenth title. And you
(00:38):
know they're not gonna win it because their fans are
of noxious than they are. They're not gonna win it
because of the park floor, which is still cool, but
it's really weird, like the first time you explained to somebody,
like why is their floor different?
Speaker 3 (00:48):
There? Buisiness floor, park floor.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
They're going to win it because, uh, they're well coached.
They got a couple of great scores. But they're a
really well built team, really well built team, and I
think their construction. I just you know, look, Brad Stevens
is a friend. He's somebody who I would love to
model my coaching style and coaching staff after. But I
(01:15):
believe he truthfully kicked himself upstairs, really did kicked himself
upstairs to being the president just there. At some point,
the messaging wasn't working with some of his younger stars,
and he found somebody that it did work with. And
then remember they had to fire their head coach, They
had to fire email Udoka, and then they hired Joe Missoula.
(01:38):
Like it's kind of amazing to hire Emi Udoka. He
gets into the files. Then they go and get Joe
Mizula and he takes him and win a championship like
that takes a special And there are other there are
other former coaches you know, kicked themselves upstairs, pat Riley,
you know who. Then come down and I'll coach myself.
(01:58):
Remember Greg Popovich, he hadn't been a head coach previously,
but he was running the San Antonios first and made
himself the head coach. Brad has the ability to sacrifice
his own ego for the betterment of his team. And
just like we always say, you are who your best
player is in an organization, you are who your leader is.
(02:22):
And what is Brad Stevens brilliant, thoughtful, great understanding of
basketball and culture and people. And oh yeah, by the way,
he's just not an egomaniac. He doesn't ever want the credit,
desire the credit. Wait till they win a championship. He'll
accept all the adulation, but he'll deflect. So again, I'm
(02:47):
not trying in any way to diminish Joe Missoula. I
think he's a very good coach. I'm not trying to
diminish Jalen Brown, who we all made fun of his
inability to dribble with his left hand. And the last
two fouls on Luca where Jalen Brown going to his left.
They're bad calls, But the point is like he's showed
the ability to go to his left. He's improved. I
(03:07):
love Drew Holiday and what he brings to a team.
What he brings to a team. He's not any one position.
There's not any one thing. He does a little bit
of everything. But to me, the story which should be
repeated is man Brad Stevens was an unbelievable head coach
in college. He left that behind to be the head
(03:29):
coach of the Celtics. They got to the conference finals
several different years with several different machinations of teams, and
when he felt like the message was falling on deaf ears,
he kicked himself upstairs, became the president, hired a really
good head coach who got them to an NBA Finals,
and then when he had to fire him, he didn't
step in and become the head coach. Instead, he found
a young head coach who's been even better. That might
(03:52):
be the story that we need to tell the most.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekday hes at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. Let's Let's get
the thoughts and now say.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
This was Danny Hurley on callan All mccollin Cowhard about
the notion that the Lakers job was used as leverage.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
I was really excited about the job. I mean for
us right now. You know, we're we've started practice with
our you know, with our current team that's going to
go for potentially a three p you know, we're also
you know in the you know, heating up in a
really really critical time for like recruiting, you know, the
the rising seniors in high school. So you know that
(04:40):
this was not a great time for me, you know,
to mess around or to go for a leverage play.
I already had the leverage back to back national championships,
and you know the way that we're doing it and
putting players in the n b A and and our
culture and the way we play ball. I mean, that's
that's leverage for me. You know, get a chance to
(05:02):
me Rob Polanka the last couple of years. Last year's draft,
they really like Jordan Hawkins. So you've got a chance
to get to know Rob really the last you know,
two drafts, you know, because we've had prospects and I've
just been super impressed with him. And obviously the opportunity
to you know, coach, you know, one of the biggest
(05:23):
brands in all of the sports landscape, in the entire world,
for somebody that loves basketball was something that you know,
I really owed it to myself and my family to consider.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
He did say later though, that basically there's we mentioned
this in the radio show that there's always a number
and they didn't come to that number. And I think
we said this yesterday. The number was floated as one
hundred million dollars. The offer was seventy million dollars. Tells
you all you need to know about who floated that number.
(05:56):
Hurly side where they landed seventy It was thirty million dollars,
Thank you, but gonna pass. This is Dan Patrick talking
about Luca.
Speaker 5 (06:07):
Luca is even if he won the titles, not the
best player in the world.
Speaker 6 (06:10):
It's still joker.
Speaker 5 (06:11):
Luca helped get them there, but he's part of the
problem while they're there, because last night inexcusable to foul
out of a game where it's a two point game,
back to back fouls. You're on the perimeter trying to
take a charge. What are you doing? You're too valuable
to be in a situation like that. Now, Luca, the
(06:31):
petulant behavior late in the game is embarrassing, But you know,
somebody has to be able to say to him, you
can't complain about every call.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
You're not going to get every call.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
And also, it's not like you're going to curry favor
with an official who's gonna go, yeah, all right, I'll
give you a couple of calls, if anything. I mean,
they're human. At some point, you tune him out, you
go stop. Now are they fifty to fifty calls? Okay?
He put himself in a position that it would be
(07:04):
difficult to give him those calls.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
I just I'm gonna disagree with you. You didn't have to
give him those calls. I mean, the first call was
you know, Jalen Brown catches the ball in the post, like,
what's he supposed to jail? Brown hooks him and gets
by him. When you hook them, you're automatically making contacts.
I'm like, what are you supposed to do? Let him score?
And in transition he's got his hands up and you know,
(07:29):
did he move quick enough?
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Latterly? I don't know. But again, Jalen Brown smartly drives
and draws contact. But it's not a powl.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
He didn't put himself in any position that like, there
is where? What are you explain to me what you're
supposed to do If you stand there with your hands
out in a stance and somebody moves to your you know,
goes by you to your right and you slide over
to get in front of him to your right, like,
what are you supposed to do? Someone has to explain
to me how you're supposed to play defense. If you
(07:58):
can't win guarding the basketball and he makes a move
to your right, his left, you move to your right,
his left.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
What are you supposed to do? There is no answer,
That's what the fox says.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
I'd say, be sure to catch live editions of the
Doug Gottlieb show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Let's find out who or what is annoying Jason Stewart.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
And now it's your annoying.
Speaker 6 (08:33):
Doug. There seems to be some kind of a trend
here of athletes coming out saying that their sport could
do the other sport.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (08:43):
Micah Parsons answered a question I think earlier this week
and said, if I was asked if he was in
the major leagues, what do you think he would hit?
And he said two hundred. So for those people that
don't do mouth, that means he would get a hit
every five at bats. Tyler Glass, now who is a
(09:04):
pitcher for the Dodgers YEP, was asked what he thought
about those about that those numbers, and Tyler said, if
he was given five hundred major league at bats, he
would get five hits, so that's about one every twenty.
My first reaction to Tyler's take was that sounds high,
(09:26):
that sounds really hot. So Mookie Betts took to his podcast,
he did it with Marcus Simeon yesterday and he said this.
Speaker 7 (09:35):
You know, Michael Parsons, he mentioned that he could hit
between one eighty and two hundred in the big leagues.
Speaker 8 (09:41):
I'll hear about two hundred.
Speaker 6 (09:42):
It's some really good hitters hitting about less than two
hundred right now.
Speaker 7 (09:45):
Because what I'm saying, Micah, you are a phenomenal athlete,
top tier. No chance you can hit between one to
eighty in two hundred. You can do a lot of things,
and a lot of things successfully, but hitting a baseball
is not.
Speaker 3 (09:59):
One of them.
Speaker 7 (10:00):
He'd probably got speed he can be hitting it. Glass said,
if we gave Micah five hundred at bats, he would
give five hits. If we gave him five hundred at bats,
how many hits do you think he would get?
Speaker 6 (10:09):
No, I think I'll get more than that.
Speaker 7 (10:10):
I think he gets zero hits.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
I'm at zero. I'm at zero.
Speaker 6 (10:17):
I would put the over under a one half.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
Yeah, I mean, I mean and and I mean look,
first of all, let's just be honest. Yes, other people
have said they want to do stuff, but several of
these comments have been made by Michael Parsons, which I
don't know why we're paying attention to Michael Parsons. He's
like twenty four to twenty five years old. He doesn't
know shit about shit right. Secondly, because so there's been
a lot of dumb stuff, he said, but it's like
(10:43):
it just feeds us, you know, we just keep eating
it up. And like at some point, like a guy
keeps saying stupid shit, like why do we care just
because he's an awesome football player, Like he says stupid
shit on the regular, but base but baseball of the thing, Like, yeah,
none of these guys could compete in any of these
sports the one I do believe the basketball players could compete.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
Some could compete in football.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
I mean, honestly, football is the one where there there
are certain positions where it's purely about There is there
technique involved, sure, but size, speed, and strength are are
the most important elements of it. And and you know,
buy and large. The basketball players that match that size,
speed and strength and maybe are bigger than guys I
(11:29):
think they could adjust and make it, especially if they
played football growing up playing baseball. Hitting a baseball is
the single hardest thing to do in sports.
Speaker 6 (11:37):
No doubt, no doubt. So Jim Trotter has been in
the segment several times.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
No is it something racial?
Speaker 6 (11:47):
How did you know? That's incredible? So remember he was, uh,
he was not extended at the NFL dot Com, NFL
Media and then he sued them for having not enough
minorities in their editing room or something like that. So
he was his cause was proving that the NFL is racist,
and now it's kind of moved to the w NBA
(12:08):
because he got an audience with Caitlyn Clark today and
I want you to hear how this goes. Now there's
there's basketball is bouncing, So I'll walk you through it,
but go ahead. This is this is the way he
greets Caitlyn Clark.
Speaker 8 (12:22):
I wonder from you a stampoint, how do you feel
about people using the young narrator and whatever culture wars
or whatever wars are filing, how do you feel about it?
Speaker 6 (12:31):
It's not something I can control, so you know, I
don't put too much thought in time into thinking about
things like that, and to be honest, I don't see
a lot of it. So Doug, I wanted to play
the follow up here because it's important. She basically says,
it's not something I pay attention to my I'm playing basketball.
He wasn't satisfied with that, and he had to he
(12:52):
had to follow up.
Speaker 8 (12:53):
But I'm understanding your focus. But I'm just curious, though,
Are you bothered because folks would attempt to recognize your
name and whatever?
Speaker 3 (13:00):
Fight the fight? No, I don't see it.
Speaker 8 (13:03):
That's not where my focus is.
Speaker 6 (13:04):
Again, my focus is here and on.
Speaker 9 (13:06):
Basketball, and you know that's where it needs to be
and that's where it has been.
Speaker 7 (13:10):
I'm just trying to get better on a daily basis.
Speaker 6 (13:12):
I want does this is what annoys me about this?
Doug Jim Trotter is asking Caitlin Clark if people using
her name in this this quote culture war.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
By doing by using her name, by using your name.
Speaker 6 (13:24):
By using her name to ask her a question, to
use her in a culture war?
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Is it annoying when people ask you the same question
over and over again? Is it annoying when people ask
the same question over and over again. It's got to
be annoying that people ask the same question over and
over again. Okay, Yeah, I mean I said this before. Like,
I know, Jim Jim's was a delightful guy. Whim he
(13:50):
used to fill in for Rome. He was on He
did a lot of Rome stuff and he used to
fill in I think, for for Rome back when you
worked with him. Like, I'm just telling you like the
Trump presidency combined with COVID, combined with the George Floyd
stuff like it just it shook some people to their core.
Speaker 6 (14:10):
Yeah, and I think that it's important to know this week,
who's the snowflake yesterday, who is afraid that the fringe
is using her as an avatar to a weaponizer all
these like very politically charged terms weaponize and avatar and
the fringe. Like when you exist in this echo chamber
(14:32):
where every day you're consuming media that agrees with your
point of view, and you go up to Caitlin Clark,
one of the most famous people in the world today,
and you try to convince her of how you feel
like I would be annoyed if somebody did that. Why
Why aren't you annoyed, Caitlin? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (14:50):
I mean he's again, like I said, delightful dude, but manned,
he loses his mind over this whole thing. So the
whole world is not out to get you. Not everything
has to do with race. And when somebody gives you
their answer that they don't they're not interested in the topic.
You got to move on, dude, You just got.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
To move on.
Speaker 6 (15:13):
Now. The Minnesota Links head coach her name is. I
found out this one.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
He's also the coach of USA basketball.
Speaker 6 (15:24):
Well that's the important part of this story. I don't
care that she coaches the.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
Links totally exposed.
Speaker 6 (15:28):
I care that she coaches the Olympic team. And she
was subtweeting last month basically with just like Rando's about
how their.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Teams gets all the coverage. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
I mean like, look, if you don't know what happened,
she didn't want her on the team, and this is
this is what's really.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Embarrassing about it. Okay, her name is Cheryl. Is Cheryl.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
By the way, I would I would take at below
half a percent the number of people named Cheryl anymore.
That seems to be a name that's gone by the wayside.
Right when you put together your list of boy your names,
and girl names, Cheryl doesn't make anybody's list ever, Right, Like,
the old fashioned names have come back, Like my grandma's
(16:20):
name was Faye. It's a beautiful name, great middle name.
We should have used this a middle name. But those
old fashion names have kind of come back in. And
of course everybody's got the Ella Emma. Some of the
boy names, the Ryans of the world, the Charlie's are
now girl names as well. My daughters are Grace and Harper.
Harper's just become a gigantic name. Nobody does Cheryl, and
(16:41):
I'm sure Cheryl's probably pissed about it. But yeah, I
saw these subtweets. I don't think there's any doubt in
my mind, not a doubt my mind that Jen Rizzotti,
you know, wanted her Yukon girls on there, and Cheryl
wanted nothing to do with Caitlin Clark.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
Nothing to do with Caitlin Clark. Zero so annoying.
Speaker 6 (17:07):
Wink's head coach, Michael Parsons and our guy Jim Trotter.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
Oh wow, that's right. That really three really annoying ones today.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
I'm gonna go Jim Trotter because he asked the same
question twice. Jim Trotter, Why are we doing this?
Speaker 1 (17:32):
I do because we can.
Speaker 6 (17:40):
Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, we're on the All the
Smoke podcasts.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
Is this even Lucas Prime?
Speaker 1 (17:48):
We see how good he is since the start of
his career.
Speaker 9 (17:51):
He has because you've got to stay in playing pro
since sixteen. Right now, he's twenty five, he's in the
middle of his prime right now. Now, that's about how
long this prime is going to last. Yeah, he's in
this prime. Come on now, he's five first team All NBAS.
He made first team since second year in the league.
So when he hit the league, he hit the league
(18:11):
in this prime, hit the league in the stride. He
hit the league in this prime.
Speaker 6 (18:15):
Damn.
Speaker 9 (18:16):
He came in and averaged like twenty eight out the show,
so yeah, that's unheard of.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
Second season your twenty eight again, Yeah, he came in
the league in his prime.
Speaker 9 (18:23):
Listen, Luca is set up to be the only nigga
to catch Brin. Don't nobody want to say that shit first, Quorn, Listen,
Luca is averaging thirty What do you average this year?
Speaker 3 (18:32):
Thirty three?
Speaker 9 (18:33):
Thirty four?
Speaker 4 (18:34):
Man almost thirty four on one leg, drinking beer, having fun.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
That's so awesome.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
I've said this previously on the show, and I mean it.
We're gonna look back at this NBA Finals ago. Can
you believe Luka got that grip to the NBA Finals.
This is not the last time he will be at
this level. Why could we play for you because we can't.
All right, that's it for in the bonus. You got
the radio show date three to five Eastern Time.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
Plus. You got this podcast and the All Ball Podcast.
This is Dougatlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio
