(00:51):
a lot to get to Dan Byer. We have eight
and Hutchinson is going to join us, we think momentarily
PS two. Patrick certain, the second who last night was
awarded Defensive Player of the Year, will join us at
forty after the hour and I'm going to make the
pitch to him, Dan on your behalf, but on the

(01:12):
World's behalf. Can the Broncos throwback uniforms be their main uniforms.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
I think we would all love that. I don't know
if it's really possible, but I think we would all
love that.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Agent of the Stars Lee Steinberg is going to join
us in the second hour of the show. Baje b
Media is going to join us as well. Of course,
he played in the NFL. He's with Good Morning Football
and oh yeah, by the way, he's a dear friend
of mine.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Akbar played at San Diego State.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
My brother's a coach first time round at San Diego State,
so he co hosts on the NFL network with Good
Morning Football. So oh, and I believe, I believe we
have a bunch of other things to discuss. We had
NBA basketball last night, Lakers play a Lakers one beat
the Warriors. Neither had their newest edition right, Warriors didn't

(02:05):
have Jimmy Butler and the Lakers still don't have Luka Doncik.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
We get some other NBA yaka yact to talk about.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
And then we had the NFL Awards, which were dominated
by a couple of things. Josh Allen's the MVP, Patrick
Scertains the Defensive Player of the Year, and Bill Belichick
has shown in very short order he can recruit. He
can recruit right. So lots lots to get to. Let's

(02:32):
let's start with the MVP. Start with the MVP.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Was Lamar Jackson robbed Dan Byer.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
No, absolutely not, And I would actually say it shouldn't
have been as close as it was. I believe that
it was Josh Allen's award. I feel for what Buffalo
didn't have this season, which was a strong defense, weapons
on offense. They didn't have a bit of a running game,

(02:59):
whiching Cook. But there was so much more of the
load that Josh Allen had to carry. And so while
statistically he doesn't match up with Lamar Jackson, he received
four more first place votes than Jackson won the voting
by about twenty points or so. I felt that Alan
should have been the MVP by a larger margin.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Yeah, I'm with you.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
I don't think our feelings are Lamar Jackson fatigue. I
can't say that I care a great deal. If we're
simply going to go buy wins and losses, then it
has to be Pat Mahomes at quarterback. That's not If
we're simply going to go by stats, well, then that's different.
And I think he's a mix of great stats. Cut
down on the turnovers, right because the big thing holding

(03:41):
Josh Allen back in the past was that he would
turn the football over all right, I mean, that was
the thing that was the limiting factor. And this year
he eliminated that. Twenty eight touchdowns only six interceptions. I mean,
you go back to even the first game of last

(04:03):
year when Aaron Rodgers goes down with the achilles injury,
the Jets nearly pull off the upset. Why because Josh
Allen forces things instead of you know, just throw it
away or just take a sack or just tucket and
run it. He improved, his efficiency, improved, his football intelligence improved,

(04:24):
and that allowed the Buffalo Bills to you know, to
be a dominant team and have the second best record
in the AFC.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
And so I'm with you. I'm with you.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
I don't think it's all stats, like it's like one
of those to do all stats matter to some stats
matter to me. Wins and losses do matter, right, Like
you're not going to put a six to win five
win teams best player in there, but they're all playoff teams.
But I think I'm with you. They didn't have a
great defense, but the number one determinant and who wins

(04:55):
and loses NFL games is was and has always been
who turns the ball over most. And he stopped turning
the football over. That was massive, massive growth. And they
did so after trading away arguably or inarguably their best
wide receiver. One of their other top wide receivers also
left by a free agency. And yet they they kept going,

(05:16):
they kept winning. It's a regular season award.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
I'm with you.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
What I heard a lot about or read a lot
about on social media for those that are supporting Lamar Jackson,
and I get it. I actually think I'm fine with
him being first team All Pro quarterback Saquon getting the
Offensive Player of the Year from the Associated Press, which
he got last night, in Alan being the MVP. The
reason why I feel so strongly about what Josh Allen

(05:41):
did as opposed to what Lamar did was it actually
wasn't about what Lamar actually did. But I think that
the argument that we use for Josh Allen this year
was the argument that we used for Lamar last year,
and I feel people are trying to now say that
while Lamar Jackson had one of the greater statistic category
specifically passing of a quarterback with his rating that we

(06:03):
had seen in the NFL, highest passer rating in the
league historically one nineteen point six is up there with
the greatest of all of them, that's not what got
Lamar Jackson the MVP last year. So that criteria is
not a moving target. The criteria is what the criteria is.
You mentioned Patrick Mahomes and winning quarterback like he was
getting votes because of how the Chiefs were winning.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
That has never changed.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
He didn't receive any first place votes as part of it,
but Patrick Mahomes received some votes on ballots where I
think you and I never would have thought Patrick Mahomes
was a top five candidate for MVP.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
This is how the award goes.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
So why it should change this year for Lamar Jackson
doesn't make any sense to me because it worked for
him last year and now we're going to have a
moving target and say this is why it should go
to Lamar instead Josh Allen. I just don't believe that
Josh Allen stayed in my case earlier did what was
required of the NFL's MVP this year and was great.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
I wouldn't commend the NFL, like, you know, I'd never
attend the NFL Awards dinner. They've created this sort of
oscars for the NFL, which is genius, right, It's content
you put on the NFL network, you know, outside of
the live events.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
It becomes their highest rated night of the year.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
But I at least they're doing it while football is
still important.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
You and I have talked about this before.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
Major League Baseball announcing their awards like a month after
the World Series is played is among the dumbest things ever, right, Like,
we've already kind of mentally moved on once you even
get to the World Series, once it's October. But to
wait until after after the World Series, it's like whatever
they do it leading up to the Super Bowl. It

(07:43):
brings all of the celebs and all of the best
players in town and all the coaches in a town
for a reason. And I think it's a huge win
for the NFL to not just do it, but do
it during this kind of timely manner.

Speaker 4 (07:56):
Doug.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Not only that, remember, the NBA tried to do their
own sort of NBA on our show, and it was
such a failure that they haven't gone back to it.

Speaker 4 (08:05):
Now.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
They announced them in the playoffs when a team hopefully
is still alive, they can hand the MVP out. Sometimes
it hasn't been the case, but now they have gone
back to their old way because doing it on June
twenty ninth, after a long season and after the NBA Draft,
people just don't have the energy and there's absolutely no
buzz with it. This leading up to the Super Bowl

(08:27):
works and it has us talking about it today. And
I will also say this in the conversation portion of it.
I think it's I think it's good for the league
that Josh Allen now has an MVP. I think that
now you have another guy in there and grand of
the league. Isn't fixing the MVP or the Most Valuable
Player award.

Speaker 4 (08:44):
We saw Chiefs fatigue.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
Heck, there could be Ravens fatigue with Lamar Jackson if
he wins another one. This adds another another validation to
Josh Allen, who's already a superstar in the league.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
Okay, then let's get to the Hall of Fame. Okay,
So they announced the four inductees which means they don't
have a full class, which, by the way, is probably better. Okay,
I disagree with one curious omission, maybe even two, but
at least it's not an entire day where the speeches

(09:15):
already go too long. But you start to get to five, six, seven,
eight people, you're like, it's an interminable length and it
doesn't get.

Speaker 4 (09:24):
To recognize people.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
Now, there are lots of people that will say, if
you don't get in as a Hall of Famer your
first time, you're not a Hall of Famer. Plenty of
people have said that, and there's an argument to be
made there, but somebody's gonna have to be explained to
me how Eli Manning is not a Hall of Famer.
And if you want to say in comparison to Dan Marino,

(09:46):
in comparison to Joe Montana, in comparison to Tom Brady,
like all right, I mean, look, there is definitely an
argument to be made if you want to go, hey,
the Hall of Fame is the best to ever do it.
If they he did that in quarterbacks, there probably be
seven or eight right now.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
But that's not what this Hall of Fame is. Can
we can we?

Speaker 1 (10:10):
You and I agree that Eli Manning ultimately is a
Hall of Famer.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
We can agree on that, but it's a different category.
He's not a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Speaker 4 (10:18):
That is okay.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
But but what and that's what this year was about.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
What about his career fell short of Jared Allen's career?
What about his career fell short of of Eric Allen's career.
I love that Sterling Sharp got in. He was the
best wide receiver in the NFL. His career was cut
short by injury, and I know it took him a
long time. And I think he got in the Veterans Committee.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
Yes, your committee.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
It's okay for you to point out, Hey, he's not
the level of Brady, he's not Leve of Montana, he's
not the level of the I would agree with you.
You and I will have no agreement, no disagreement there.
But that's like, is Jared Allen at the level of
Lawrence Taylor?

Speaker 2 (11:02):
No?

Speaker 3 (11:04):
No, no, but Jared Allen No. But he's not a
first ballot Hall of Famer. There is if I get it.

Speaker 1 (11:10):
But if you're gonna put Jared Allen in the Hall
of Fame, why don't you put Eli Manning in the
Hall of.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
Fame because of what you just said.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
You're comparing Eli Manning to the quarterbacks that are in
the in the Hall of Fame or that will go
into the Hall of Fame. You're not comparing Eli Manning
other those whould have a Hall of Fame of just quarterbacks,
because that's.

Speaker 4 (11:26):
What the people about.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
My point is was there were.

Speaker 3 (11:30):
Worse snubs last night than than Eli Manning. Oh so,
Adam Adam by, Yes, I agree, Adam V. Terr should
be melhn. I I think that you could make an
argument for Luke Keigley. I thought he was maybe borderline.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
I'm okay, okay, yeah, I'm with you on that one.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
Louke Keigley was as good a middle linebacker as I
can remember in the last twenty five years. Like he
was just aude and kind of like Terrell Davis who
TV's going to join us in the pod right, kind
of like Terrell davis career short. Now, his career wasn't
as short as Trell Davis's was, but is cut short
because of concussions because of yours, but not because of
poor play. That guy was an absolute studte stud. I'm

(12:11):
with you on those two. But what about why why
would you put Jared Allen in for Eric Allen in
and not put Eli Manning in when you're going to
put Eli Manning in eventually.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
Because just I think that there is a difference between
first ballot Hall of Famers. Eric Allen hasn't played since
two thousand and one. It's been a long wait for him.
He's on the ballot and he's waited year after year,
So him going in is not necessarily the same level

(12:44):
as Eli being that first ballot Hall of Famer. I
was actually surprised Eric Allen came in. We were just
talking about remembering our days. I remember Eric Allen is
a good corner Maybe we were, Dion that just if
you weren't, Dion, you weren't. But I remember Eric Allen
is a is a very very good cornerback. But did
I think Hall of Fame back in the day? No,

(13:04):
not necessarily. Voters apparently felt the same way. Well, it
was so odd about this, Doug, and I think the
point that maybe you and I can meet at is.

Speaker 4 (13:14):
The decision to not fill the class.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
It's the first time in twenty years they haven't used
the maximum spots to put someone into the Hall of Fame.
So While you may vote for Eli Manning being in
and using that extra spot, I would vote for somebody else.
The fact that they didn't do it, and in previous
years maybe put guys in that didn't deserve it because
they were so hell bent on filling a class and
now they realize people don't want to sit around for

(13:36):
five hours and listen to speeches. I don't know if
that's the reason why we only have four players in.
There were only three from the fifteen finalists of the
modern era. Sterling Sharp, as you mentioned, wasn't even a
part of the regular group. Mike Congren is the only
coach up. He didn't get in. So it's a very
interesting vote last night. And it's not just Eli, it's
the whole class, and it's that you put Jared Allen

(13:59):
and er Allen as part of the conversation. But I
just think when it comes down to Eli, he's compared
to the Marinos, the Brady's the Breeze. Who's up for
enshrinement next year. It's probably a chance Eli doesn't get
in next year, Drew Brees is going in.

Speaker 4 (14:13):
I think that's I think that's where we're at with Eli.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
So here's here's the question.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
We have, can we we agree we have one first
ballot Hall of Famer playing in this weekend Super Bowl,
and there's one other one who didn't win the MVP,
but I think is probably going to be in that
conversation in seven or eight years, which would be Seguon Barkley.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
I would I would expand it by one. I think
Travis Kelcey will just toss a ballot a Hall of Famer.

Speaker 4 (14:44):
Kay.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
I think I'm there with you. I think I'm there
with you.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
I do have one listen, I'm We talked about Antonio
Gates a lot this the last couple of days.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
Yeah, it is interesting.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
Gates did pop positive for a ped It was later
in his career, but that one did get kind of
curiously overlooked by the committee. I would love to know
what the conversation if that came up in the conversation.

Speaker 3 (15:10):
I went you it came up last year because I
felt there there was an outrage last year.

Speaker 4 (15:16):
Maybe they just needed to get past it. And now
he's in.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
All right, Well, let's uh, let's catch up with a
pro bowler who had an unbelievable year which is cut
short by injury. Aight Hutchinson joins this year on the
Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio and and ad
thanks so much for taking time as a Lion, as
a guy who was part of this unbelievable resurgence of
the Lions. What's it like to watch or know these

(15:43):
two teams are going to play thinking, I'm sure there's
lots of times this year where you thought the Lions
would be part of this game.

Speaker 5 (15:51):
Yeah, you know, I mean it always sings when you're
not in the in the championship game, and you know
we had a real, real good shot of being in it.
And I think the injuries kind of just got the
best of us fan. You know, too many injuries on defense,
put a little too much pressure on our offense, and
you know you don't have a good game of the team,
and you know you find yourself too in an early exit.

(16:13):
So I think we're all just looking forward to next year,
getting healthy and getting this team back to where we
see ourselves.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
Would you have been back if they were playing this weekend?
Would you have been back playing for the lines?

Speaker 5 (16:29):
You know, it's hard to say. I could have. I
might not have been, you know, I guess we'll never.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
Know gave him the Jason Tatum that gave him the
who did Tatum copy on?

Speaker 6 (16:40):
That?

Speaker 4 (16:40):
I can't remember, but I guess we'll never know.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
Joining us on behalf of Panini, and I do have
a question, and this may be the kid and me
coming out, but I still buy cards to this day.
Are you a guy who does collect cards? Are you
a Penie card guy? Now that you're in the NFL?
Has it been lost on you? Where are you in
terms of collecting trading cards now that you've teamed up

(17:04):
with Panini?

Speaker 5 (17:06):
Yeah? I mean being with Panini, it was really a
dream to see myself on a Paniti card and I
grew up collecting some of them as a kid. And
being on that card and being on this foot side
of things, it's so amazing. And they have such a
good crew over here at Panini, and they treat me
so well over these last few years i've been with them,
So it's really a great part of Ship.

Speaker 3 (17:29):
Eight Nudgets Enjoining us here on Fox Sports Radio. Was
there any point that did you feel you guys peaked
at any point?

Speaker 4 (17:36):
Maybe too early?

Speaker 3 (17:38):
I know you guys had just an awful rash of injuries,
but you were playing some top level A plus football,
you know, leading into Thanksgiving?

Speaker 4 (17:45):
Did that it all happen with this team this year?

Speaker 5 (17:50):
You know? I think you always think you don't want
to get too hot too early as a team, But
I think we were so consistently dominant throughout the entire
season in light of all the injuries. But I think
at the end of the day, it's just it got
a little bit too much in the playoffs, you know.
I mean, first play of the playoff game, our starting
corner Meek Robertson, who was playing nickel to start the season,

(18:11):
broke his arm and he just at that point, you
see it and you're like, dude, how much more can
we take as a defense? How many how many more
guys we take? Seeing out who will step them up?
And I think that was kind of the final, the
final early domino that went down, that kind of that
kind of got us in the end.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
What will the year?

Speaker 1 (18:31):
What would be like to get back together with this
defense when you have a different defensive coordinator this offseason.

Speaker 5 (18:39):
Yeah, I think it'll be great. I think it'll be great.
I think you know, we have we have a whole
bunch of different coaches on both sides of the ball.
And I think really our foundation is in the players.
It's in the players and with guys on offense, guys
on defense, and uh, you know, they could put anyone
in there to coach and we're gonna we're gonna dominate.

Speaker 4 (19:01):
Aiden.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
How did it feel to be the hunted this year
because of the expectations that you guys had.

Speaker 4 (19:08):
Was there a different feeling?

Speaker 3 (19:09):
Was there a different mindset entering that role because for years,
the years and years the Lions were underdogs. Now people
expected you to be playing in this game. Was that
any different this season? Was that a different role for
you guys of being the hunted as opposed to hunting?

Speaker 5 (19:26):
Yeah, I mean it's it's amazing because it's you know,
you're getting everybody's best shot. When when as we're the Lions,
now we're well one of the teams to beat in
the NFC, and so you know you do get everybody's
best shot. So it really requires even more of concentration
during the week, even more preparations, even more you get
in that game. You know that this guy's can circle

(19:49):
in this game all year long because you know you're
the Detroit Lions, and I don't think that's that kind
of thing in years past. So it's special and I
think we all we love that feeling, but it's something
that it takes continuous work, year year to maintain that.

Speaker 1 (20:05):
What sucks when you get hurt is you got to
sit there and watch a lot more on the couch.
But when you do watch on the couch, now all
of a sudden, you get to watch other people play.
I'm sure you've seen both of these two teams. The
defenses are outstanding. Uh what are you impressed by? Let
let's start with the Eagles. What impresses you by their defense?

Speaker 5 (20:25):
Yeah, the Eagles have been I mean ever since early
in that season when I believe they had a couple
lost or two early, they've been so dominant, you know,
ever since then and then Kansas City. You know, it's
kind of the tale of the entire year is them
just finding ways to win the end of at the
end of games, you know, and it's uh, has been
the prettiest for them sometimes, but I mean you can tell,

(20:47):
like you know, they get in that fourth quarter and
those guys turn it up and I think it's all
this is going to go down to the last the
last possession, it's gonna go It's gonna go down to
the fourth quarter in this game, and who ever gonna
win those last few drives, it's gonna win the game.

Speaker 3 (21:01):
Panini America is hosting Aid Hudginson, along with several other
NFL stars and prospects from the draft, at the Panini
Prism VP Lounge here in New Orleans ahead of Super
Bowl weekend. Let's do the other side. What gets you
just about the Chiefs defense? Who I think now is
the defensive team. I know it's crazy with Andy Reid
and Patrick Mahomes, but what excites you when you actually
watch the Chiefs unit out on the field.

Speaker 5 (21:23):
Yeah. Again, you know, it's been a I think it's
been a weird season for them, just they have all
these buzzer beater wins and all these crazy, crazy last
second comebacks or whatever it is. And so I think again,
I mean, their defense is is very talented. Both defenses
are extremely talented. But I think at this point, with
all talent on the field, it's just it's gonna come
down to who's gonna make those plays in the clutch moments,

(21:45):
like every Super Bowl is.

Speaker 1 (21:48):
Ay Dutchess is our guest here on the Doug Gottlieb
Show on Fox Sports Radio. What's the Dan Campbell experience really?

Speaker 4 (21:57):
Like?

Speaker 1 (21:57):
You know, we just see through the prism of social
media and through traditional media, and obviously we watch you
guys play on Thursday, Sundays and Mondays, and you can't
help but be impressed, especially when we've watched the Lions
b you know, towards the bottom, not just in the
NFC North, with the NFC for years and obviously now
you guys are upper trajector. But what is the Dan

(22:20):
Campbell experience like for a player, especially a star player
like yourself.

Speaker 5 (22:25):
Yeah, I mean, really, everything you see on the internet,
everything you see, you know, all the hype, all the
all the post game speeches like that is real. That
is Dan. That is That's who he is. And I
think his authenticity is what we all really value in
him as a head coach. He's gonna tell us, he's
gonna tell us how he feels, so that more back,

(22:47):
you know, and uh, it's not gonna sugarcoat anything. He's
not gonna he's not gonna bes with you. And I
think there's a lot of I mean, there's a lot
of grown men in this league. And I think people
appreciate when you know they can just be real with you.

Speaker 3 (23:02):
Aiden Hutchinson living the dream as a pro athlete, living
the dream of seeing himself on a trading card again,
teaming up with Panini here at Super Bowl fifty nine,
hanging out at the Panini Prism Vip Lounge in New
Orleans here ahead of Super Bowl weekend. Aiden, thanks so
much of the time, talk to you.

Speaker 4 (23:17):
Thanks, Thanks all right.

Speaker 1 (23:19):
Aid Hutchinson, Dan, again, I don't we don't always need
to kind of filter words. I don't think you would
have played.

Speaker 4 (23:27):
The Super Bowl, right, I don't think so either.

Speaker 1 (23:29):
Now, because if you would have played in the Super Bowl,
you go like, hey, well, what's likely you would have played?

Speaker 2 (23:32):
He'd be like one hundred percent.

Speaker 1 (23:33):
I've been played, Like I'm good now, right because right
now he will been getting ready for the game and
you can't get rid of the game. Well, then you
know it's like, oh, which thinks a gruesome, gruesome injury
and against the Cowboys on the road, and that just
began began kind of the downfall of that defense.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
And so let's let's think, So what up with you?

Speaker 1 (23:57):
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, podcasts and live from
the ty rack dot com studios Direct dot com.

Speaker 2 (24:03):
What if you get there?

Speaker 1 (24:05):
Tyrac dot COM's got an unmatched election, fast free shipping,
free road hast protection, over ten thousand recommended sallars. Tyrat
dot COM's way tire buying should be Dan that we
have a lot to get to with the Super Bowl.
We have some really really good guests coming up. Tyreek
Hill apparently apologizing. You know, we had Tron Armstrong on

(24:27):
with us yesterday and he basically Armstead, Sorry Armstrong. Trond
Armstead basically said, hey, look I talked to him. He
knows what he needs to do and maybe that's what
he's doing.

Speaker 2 (24:39):
We'll get to that.

Speaker 1 (24:40):
Lee Steinberg's going to join us as we're getting ready
for the upcoming NFL Draft as well.

Speaker 2 (24:45):
Lee has been a staple of the NFL Draft for
thirty years.

Speaker 1 (24:49):
Really the Quarterback Agent, if you will, Jerry McGuire is
basically based upon Lee Steinberg's as a character. Actually used
his old office. But I I did want to start
this hour because Akbar Bajabi Media is going to join us.
And I don't mean this in any way other than

(25:10):
what I'm saying. I'm so happy for him, so so
happy for him. Akbar was at San Diego State. My
brother was coming up as an assistant coach. He was
the director of ops or whatever, and I was at ESPN.
This is way back in the day, and he's like, dude,
we got a football player here who's going to be

(25:31):
a TV star. Just everybody likes him. He's got that,
he's got that magnetic sort of thing going. And you know,
look he American Ninja Warrior obviously was kind of his
breakthrough TV show. You talk about good things happening to
good people, and we're in a business, and I think
you can attest to this, right maybe.

Speaker 3 (25:53):
What Achbar you are being. I mean, this is this
is eulogy level the way that dead He's just a
stuff now, well, no, no, this is ok Bar knows this.

Speaker 1 (26:05):
Okay, We're in a business where my old agent is say, hey,
don't take a personal everybody hates everybody.

Speaker 2 (26:13):
Oh, everybody hates everybody.

Speaker 1 (26:15):
And when when Akbar broke through on American Ninja Warrior,
I've literally never heard anybody say anything bad about it.
Plenty of people crucify me for stuff I end any wrong.

Speaker 4 (26:29):
An well, you know what I.

Speaker 7 (26:29):
Will say sometimes, you know, even when you know no
one's saying anything bad about you, maybe in your face,
but sometimes people can say stuff behind your back, so
no doubt.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
But I can tell you behind your back, dock bar,
nobody's hating none you.

Speaker 4 (26:44):
I appreciate that. So so here's here's the question.

Speaker 1 (26:47):
Though, you're back NFL network, right, and it's not like
you haven't been around NFL. I haven't played in the NFL.
Your brother play in the NFL, but you did, you
kind of became a network TV star. What's it like
to circle back to kind of you know, the wellspring
of it all to covering football. You know, it's been great,
I think.

Speaker 7 (27:04):
You know, to be able to go and go back
to what kind of got me into this opportunity of
being able to do the talk and do you know
Ninja Warrior and fight to survive. It's been really cool
to see that because I think the one thing that's
been true for me is I absolutely love to see,
you know, people shine and to see the stories that
are being told, but also too to be able to

(27:25):
bring my unique perspective, which is, you know, sometimes I
don't always go and talk about you know, the big
names and of course, I've talked about Patrick Mahomes lot
this year in sa kuon Barkley, but I think about
in this game. I think about, you know, the stories
of like a Mike Collendo, you know, and being able
to you know, Joe Tony moves out to the left
tackle position. You talk about Matt Kelly Endo getting that opportunity.

(27:47):
You know, a guy who's you know, on a practice
squad and gets elevated and now playing in the biggest
game of his life. Now does that meet the editorial
you know for standard maybe not, but it's something that
means a lot to me because why, I was a
fifty three man guy, right, I was a guy who's undrafted.
I came into the league and trying to find my way.
I didn't have a big name, but didn't have big
productions or you know, production or anything like that. But

(28:10):
so those stories mean a lot to me, and so
it gives me great honor to a as a fan
of the game since I was a kid, to be
able to talk about the game but also talk about
it from a standpoint of you know, I know that
fifty three man guy who's been working his butt off
and now he's here and has his moment.

Speaker 3 (28:25):
NFL Network talent and host of American Ninja Warrior on
NBC Akbarbaja Bama joining us here.

Speaker 4 (28:31):
I think it's fitting to say this, especially for what
we saw.

Speaker 3 (28:35):
We're seeing so much on social media today and what
we heard last night Shannon and Sterling Sharp.

Speaker 7 (28:40):
Oh I know you was Kabir's brother. Yeah, No, no, no,
actually I wasn't. Actually I wasn't. I was Kabir's little brothers.
Little brothers how they refer to me.

Speaker 3 (28:50):
Yeah, but that's how I know. I grew up in Wisconsin. Obviously,
his great years with the Packers and such. When you
see a moment like Sterling and Shannon had.

Speaker 7 (29:00):
Ride you did, I cried, Yeah, because you think about
they were so and I can relate to it because
I have a brother who's an absolute superstar, and both
those guys are superstar. But to see the reverence that
Shannon Sharp has for Sterling and what Sterling created, and
it really it makes me appreciate what my brother did

(29:21):
for me in a lot of ways. His excellence on
the football field from Crenshaw High School to San Diego
State to the Green Bay Packers, and it allowed people
to give me an opportunity. Now, you know, those guys'
relationships are a little different because they accel both of
them excelled at a high level. But I think it's
somebody setting the the the being the trail blazer and

(29:43):
setting the path.

Speaker 4 (29:44):
And my brother set the path.

Speaker 7 (29:46):
And what people don't realize for any trail blazer in life,
the person who goes through the door first is probably
going to take all of the heat and you know
a lot of the stuff that comes with it, how
to deal with family members, how to do with success,
how to deal with the pressure, and all this other stuff,
and then be able to turn back around and set
it as an example, and also to be able to

(30:09):
give that back to the person who's coming right behind you.
That's pretty pretty cool.

Speaker 4 (30:13):
It's absolutely cool.

Speaker 7 (30:15):
And to me, I'm forever indebted to the opportunity that
my brother set for me just by his example. He
didn't you know, I didn't get into the league because
of him, but he was able to allow eyes to
see you differently. It's just so different than you know,
I think about what Michael Strahan has done and for
me in my career just being able to be a mentor.
But Michael Strahan excelling, allow people to see me and

(30:38):
what I can do outside of as a football player. Oh,
he can talk about more than just football. I think
about you know, Nate Burlison, people and executives and production
company could wait. He can talk about more than just football.
So sometimes you need that first person to take all
the heat, all this stereotype and all that. Take that first,
and then everybody else can benefit off of it.

Speaker 2 (30:59):
I will plant out.

Speaker 1 (31:00):
Olson's debut on national radio was on Game Night at
ESPN Radio with with Me and Chuck Wilson. It's pretty
oh wow, yeah, pretty amazing to watch him. I want
to ask you about Ninja Warrior. Yeah, uh when were
you pitched on being on the show? When when did
somebody pitch you the show?

Speaker 7 (31:16):
So it was it was so funny because I lied.
Uh So, my agent at the time called me and said, hey,
I've got this opportunity for you to audition for the
show Ninja Warrior, and and I'm like, all right, cool,
you ever heard? Yeah, oh yeah, I'll watch it all
the time. Hey, I'd never watched it.

Speaker 5 (31:33):
No.

Speaker 7 (31:34):
And but by this time in my career, I was
already getting ready to jump out of TV altogether. Remember
you remember, yeah, because I just I was it wasn't hitting,
and I remember my wife hit me up with the
reality and I'm just keeping it one hundred with you guys.
I was down to my last forty thousand dollars I had,
you know, now married to kids, and things weren't working out.

(31:54):
I started selling turf for the same turf that they
have at the Cowboys Stadium, the one that they have
in the Vegas aid. I was selling for that company,
and I was going around to USCO everywhere, and I
was like, all right, I'm jumping out of this. I
got to start making money for my family. And I
had heard a thousand no's, and so I get this
call out of nowhere a I lied and told my

(32:14):
wife I had a sales meeting. I didn't, and I
went out for this audition, and I'm like, you know
what everybody tells me, no, anyway, I don't care. I
really went in with the I don't care. And so
I went into that audition and I acted a straight fool,
and I just went into my version of WWE for
Ninja Warrior because it was very stiff before and now
they used to call it. I'm like, oh, my god,
look at this dw do all here acting crazy and

(32:36):
it's just like and I walked out. I was like, thanks, guys.
I didn't think anything of it. And then two weeks
later I get a phone call, Hey, welcome to Primetime,
went what are you talking about? You're gonna be the
next host of American and man, once again, I found
myself crying and it was cool. So that's how it happened.
I really didn't I didn't even think twice about it.
I walked out of there thinking I hear the same thing,

(32:58):
Oh we love you, you're on our short list, whatever, whatever,
blah blah blah. I didn't even care, you know. I
just did it because it was an opportunity.

Speaker 1 (33:04):
If I would have told you when you did that
audition that not only would you be this huge star,
but they have Ninja Warrior classes. Do they have like stores,
they have they have birthday parties, like the coolest birthday party.
My son is like ten years ago, like a Ninja Warrior,
and the kids love it. It's the Ninja worry thing.

(33:26):
Is kind of crazy, how that's say it is.

Speaker 7 (33:28):
I think it's the one show that people can replicate
and have fun. I go to parks and I hear
kids talking about, Oh, I'm Ninja Warrior, and now they
have American Ninja Warrior at Venture Parks, which is pretty
cool that they have that.

Speaker 4 (33:39):
Yeah, here's the cool thing I like about it.

Speaker 3 (33:41):
Akbar Bashera b Mea joining us here on Fox Sports
Radio on behalf of Experience, which can help you improve
your financial health and keep more money in your pockets.
You guess who's on the starting block, who's gonna do well?
Oh and then they're done in two levels and the
person you think this person's done.

Speaker 4 (33:56):
Hold on, Hold on, Dan, Dan, Dan, Yes, hold on,
hold on?

Speaker 2 (34:01):
I part in mean live bro, come on now right?

Speaker 4 (34:08):
Know what they show people failing? Yeah, yeah, it's not
every No, but his.

Speaker 2 (34:12):
Commentary, his commentary. I believe they record.

Speaker 4 (34:17):
It's not.

Speaker 2 (34:17):
The commentary isn't live play by player.

Speaker 4 (34:19):
Don't know. I'm not talking about him. I'm talking no no, no, no, no,
no no no, Just so.

Speaker 7 (34:24):
You know, No, the commentary is not. We're there like
this is not like you're talking about wipeout where they
do it, they film it.

Speaker 4 (34:30):
I had to take don't do it like wipeout.

Speaker 7 (34:32):
No, we are there live in the face dougg our commentary,
I didn't know.

Speaker 4 (34:35):
I didn't know.

Speaker 2 (34:36):
You're my my bad.

Speaker 4 (34:38):
You totally do. I look at body type. I'm always
about body type.

Speaker 1 (34:42):
But I like that he's too heavy, arms aren't long enough,
no chance, whatever, It doesn't matter what their job is.

Speaker 2 (34:48):
I just like a body type.

Speaker 4 (34:49):
You gotta be like like strong, but like super light,
because so much of it there is.

Speaker 7 (34:53):
Once you get over over one hundred and seventy pounds,
it becomes incrementally more difficult to get your through. So
anybody who's over one seventy five, so you might hear
us say, oh, this guy is a big dude. Anybody
he's not that big. He's six one two o five
For Ninja Warrior, carrying two hundred pounds and traversing across
all these obstacles, it's extremely difficult.

Speaker 4 (35:12):
If you tried it, yeah, I did.

Speaker 7 (35:13):
I back you go. I tell anybody go YouTube. At
twenty eighteen, I ran it two hundred and forty seven pounds.
I had to lose thirteen pounds just to be able
to run it, and it was one of the hardest
train I did two days to train for it, but
I did it.

Speaker 2 (35:25):
I ended up doing it was the hardest obstacle, I
think all of.

Speaker 7 (35:29):
Them, because there was in my head I had so
much fear about. You know. I even called my brother
to give me a hype you know, hype speech, because
I'm like, I was a football dude coming into this
world and I wanted to give it all the respect.
But I was like, I'm telling these dudes, oh, you
should be doing that, and he should be. He messed
up and that time he should have went with this technique.
And I'm like, yeah, easy for you to say in
the booth. So if I get out there and I

(35:50):
follow on the first obstacle, I lose all my credentials, Like,
you know, my cred is out the window. Like, man,
this dude talking, he couldn't even do it, and I'm
doing it on TV. So I'm like, I was nervous
and to hit that buzzer. First off, I will never
try train for it again because I'm not doing it.
That was so hard to do. I was successful. I'm good,
I have it on tape. I'm good.

Speaker 4 (36:11):
Man, Well this is great.

Speaker 3 (36:13):

eighteen nineteen, No, you're joking.

Speaker 4 (37:09):
No, two tent three, Oh my god.

Speaker 2 (37:11):
Six seven.

Speaker 7 (37:13):
This is a world record.

Speaker 1 (37:14):
The one, two, three, three, thirty four, thirty five, three, six, three, seven,
thirty eight, thirty nine, forty one two your joke for
forty five forty five.

Speaker 7 (37:21):

Three he experience dot com.

Speaker 7 (38:02):

Live on Radio Row.

Speaker 3 (38:29):
At Super Bowl fifty nine, a very special guest joins
us on the Doug Gottlieb Show. He is now the
NFL's Defensive Player of the Year as of last evening,
Ladies and Gentlemen, Patrick Sutan at the Denver Broncos. Congratulations
on the honor. You're here on behalf of Applebee's teaming up.
Is you help spread the word on the Super Bowl

(38:51):
wing deal. We'll get to that in a second. Congratulations
on the honor last night. Thank you man, I appreciate it.
Definitely a surreal filler.

Speaker 1 (38:57):
Sure, I look, there's a lot that goes into this,
but when you stop and think about it for a second, right,
you're voted the best defensive player in the entire league.

Speaker 2 (39:11):
Yeah, has that sunk in?

Speaker 6 (39:13):
Ut It definitely sunk in now. Yesterday it just seemed
like a blur.

Speaker 8 (39:19):
It just seemed like everything was a fault, you know,
just from winning the award, you know, to all the
interviews and to see my family.

Speaker 6 (39:27):
I just felt instant gratification.

Speaker 8 (39:29):
But now I realize what I've able to accomplish, you know,
and it's pretty awesome to get measured, you know, amongst
the best, and to win that prestigious.

Speaker 6 (39:38):
Award for sure.

Speaker 3 (39:40):
Patricks artan joining us here where fans can enjoy free
boneless Wintons with an online order through Applebe's dot com
and the mobile app Doug. I have an exercise here.
I want to make sure that these numbers are official.
Someone made a list of the top receivers in the
National Football League. You can see them here and what
they did against you. Brockbauer six one catch, nine yards.

(40:01):
That correct, Yeah, sounds about right. Mike Evans twenty four routes,
one catch, eight yards, Stay, don't lie right. Here's my favorite.
George Pickens eleven routes, one reception, sixteen yards. I'll tell
you why it's my favorite.

Speaker 1 (40:14):
In the second as he complained about because because because
he very much likely complained about it, the entire postgame
is that.

Speaker 4 (40:20):
Here's here's why.

Speaker 3 (40:21):
Because the Pittsburgh Steeler fans tried to make this video
clip of George Pickens roasting him and it was ninety seconds.

Speaker 4 (40:28):
It was the one catch, and that catch happened last year.
Like this.

Speaker 7 (40:33):
It was.

Speaker 3 (40:34):
It was amazing he had one catch in your game
this year because that game was in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 4 (40:38):
This year's game was in Denver. Amazing.

Speaker 3 (40:40):
They've tried to make it like this highlight video and
it was just the same catch over and over again
from different angles and it was only.

Speaker 4 (40:46):
For like ten yards.

Speaker 6 (40:48):
Yeah, but yeah, what it is?

Speaker 3 (40:49):
You know, I'll do the talking for you a couple more.
Doug Drake London zero catches, zero yards on thirteen routes.
Your former teammate Jerry Judy thirty four routes, two catches,
twenty yards. I mean, Jamar Chaser, you said a couple
of weeks back with kay Adam's best receiver in the
NFL forty three routes, three catches, twenty seven yards.

Speaker 1 (41:08):
That that one, that one's amazing. Here here's my question. Okay,
obviously your dad was the elbow player and your dad
coached here. How did your dad coach you?

Speaker 3 (41:16):
What? What?

Speaker 2 (41:17):
What was his style and approach to coaching.

Speaker 6 (41:21):
That dynamic? You know.

Speaker 8 (41:24):
I mean when he was coaching me in high school,
it wasn't so much about him just coaching me. It
was sort of him coaching a group of men so
everything wasn't two hands on. I mean we had a
separate dB coach, Chad Wilson, uh, that coached us throughout
the duration of my high school career. So everything was

(41:45):
just like him being involved and also being the leader
amongst a group of young men. So I mean he
was pretty cool to share that dynamic on the field
and when we get home, his father and son on
the field, this coaching player, you know what I mean,
Because I mean he cheated me just like everybody else
on the field, you know what I mean. It wasn't
no no advantage at all. Like it wasn't no oh

(42:07):
he getting an easy way out. No, I had to
work and work and work to prove my point.

Speaker 6 (42:11):
So yeah, it was. It was a great, great feeling.
I mean, it's it's moments that all chance forever.

Speaker 2 (42:19):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (42:19):
Sharing the same field with him for sure?

Speaker 2 (42:21):
Did he did you call him coach or did you
call him dad? During games?

Speaker 5 (42:26):
Uh?

Speaker 8 (42:29):
I don't even say that to be like yo, yo, Yeah,
I thought it was pops, you know, some some subtle
you know, and then like dad dad.

Speaker 6 (42:41):
Nah, I couldn't do it.

Speaker 4 (42:43):
Patrick Sutan joining us here live from Radio Row.

Speaker 3 (42:46):
The Doug Gottlop Show on Fox Sports Radio on behalf
of Applebee's kind of along those lines, not family wise,
but vance Joseph was once a head coach of the
Denver Broncos.

Speaker 4 (42:57):
Now he comes back with Sean Payton. Your defensive coordinator.

Speaker 3 (43:00):
Had to be some swallowing of the pride going back
to a place where it didn't work out, but now
leads the defense and then your defense is off the charts.

Speaker 4 (43:07):
Your defensive player of the year.

Speaker 3 (43:09):
What sort of impact does he have on you as
a player and the defense that you guys had this
year in twenty twenty four.

Speaker 8 (43:17):
Yeah, I think he's done a great job of sort
of leading, you know what I mean. He's he's a
great leader. You know, obviously he's a great defensive coordinator,
But he brought the best out of us, you know
what I mean. I just think each and every day
he challenged us individually, you know what I mean, because
we had a great we have a great defense, a

(43:37):
young defense. We had a lot of unsung heroes that
people didn't recognize before the season that they recognize now.

Speaker 6 (43:43):
So I definitely think he brought the best out of.

Speaker 8 (43:46):
Us defensively and he allowed us to shine in his
scheme using our skill set.

Speaker 6 (43:51):
And that's the one thing that you know, he made
it in you know what I mean.

Speaker 8 (43:55):
Obviously got all these exotic schemes, these pressures, you know, coverages,
But I just think that he called the right players
at the right time and that allowed us to succeed
at a high level.

Speaker 1 (44:07):
Okay, Dan is our resident like uniform police, but I
can tell you that we are lockstep in. Can we
can you help us get the throwback uniforms to be
the main uniforms of the Broncos.

Speaker 6 (44:23):
I tried, man, I tried. I tried.

Speaker 8 (44:26):
We've been trying to pitch that, you know, the ownership
and everybody involved, but it's pretty hard, man, because they
wanted to treat it like the prize, you know what
I mean, you know, create the anticipation for the throwbacks,
because you know, if we make them the primaries, people
will get used to them. Then they would get bored
with that. Then we had to come up with a
whole new scheme, you know. So I think we're gonna
keep it how it is, you know what I mean,

(44:47):
keep it hitting, you know what I mean, and lead
to anticipation amongst the fans.

Speaker 3 (44:51):
You know, so, uh is Bonex thrill deal? Great rookie season?
What do you see him in him as a quarterback?

Speaker 8 (44:58):
He is a real deal, honestly. I mean, I just
I've seen it first start of ot AS. I just
see the confidence that the meaning, the poys, everything along
those lines, and I think that, you know, I've seen
it early on. Obviously he's very mature to be a rookie.
He came in with the right mindset, the right demeanor,

(45:19):
very confident. I remember he made a no look throw
like one of the first players of O t a is.
I was like, Okay, yeah, he's coming in with with
that attitude, with that swagger. So I was like, yeah,
we're gonna have a good year. You know, you know
when you feel that presence and that you know, that
sort of urgency. Uh, you know that the year that
he was going to have I wasn't a surprise at all.

Speaker 1 (45:41):
Pat Another thing that this kind of a bone I
had to pick with Dan is he loves boneless wings.
You're promoting boneless wings, But bonless aren't those chicken nuggets?

Speaker 6 (45:52):
Like, Like, what I get that?

Speaker 2 (45:53):
That's not a wing? A wing has bones, Wings are wings.
Boneless wings are chicken nuggets.

Speaker 3 (45:59):
Buffalos don't have wings, So like we're already off to
a wrong like a bad start there. Who cares almost
wings to me? Yeah it wings it wings. Yeah, what's
your favorite flavor that I know? Doug wants to know
the favorite flavor of wings. See this is this is

(46:19):
a tricky one because a lot of people may not understand.
I think it's an Atlanta thing that's sort of growing
as it's a hot hot lemon pepper.

Speaker 4 (46:27):
Oh m, lemon pepper is very popular on this stage.

Speaker 1 (46:31):
I love I love lemp. I like the dried lemon
pepper rub more than the wet lemon pepper.

Speaker 2 (46:36):
Yeah, got more more of a drive guy.

Speaker 1 (46:39):
You know, so much of sports is about confidence, and
Dan went through and read all those numbers. But how
do you maintain and again now your defense to play
the year everybody's been coming at you. But even as
a young player, you still maintained a level of confidence
but not arrogance. How do you do that in a
position where like I actually think the Pittsburgh thing is

(46:59):
the perfect example, Dan, where you can shut a guy
down ten different routes and then you slip and he
gets you once right and social media. Media makes you
feel like you don't know what you're doing. How do
you personally maintain a proper level of self confidence?

Speaker 6 (47:16):
Yeah, I mean all about dB is confidence. Man.

Speaker 8 (47:19):
I have to feel like to go out there and
go up against top level athletes and going backwards you're
reading and reacting. I mean, that's just what it is
at the end of the day. I mean that's what
makes dB hard. But you just gotta have the confidence
go out there and be the best player that you
could be, you know what I mean, hone in on
your technique and tape and you're gonna have short term

(47:40):
memory at the end of the day, you know, cornerback.

Speaker 6 (47:44):
You know it's you're gonna have your highs and lows.

Speaker 8 (47:47):
I mean, you're gonna have games where you get beat
and you're gonna have your good games.

Speaker 6 (47:51):
And that's what it is at the end of the day.

Speaker 8 (47:53):
But you just got to stay confident throughout the game
because then that play gonna come and you're gonna make
a game change and play throughout the game. So when
you when you have those games, man, you know like okay, yeah,
I'm a I'm gonna make a game change of play
for sure.

Speaker 4 (48:08):
Patrick's here on behalf of apple Bee's.

Speaker 3 (48:10):

Speaker 6 (48:38):

Speaker 8 (48:39):

Speaker 1 (49:45):

the whole like it's special so people get it's those.
The uniforms are great, the lines are so clean. Just
