us on your AM and FM dial. That's that's the
code is terrestrial radio. Last night I got a chance
with Chris Bruce Sard also has his own show on
(00:43):
the weekends on Fox Sports Radio and NBA Champion Medal
World Peace to cover the first round of the NBA Draft.
And look, there's some things I'm gonna share with you
in all sports and it's one of the things that um,
I think that business people can under stand things about
other businesses and athletes can understand things about other athletes.
(01:04):
And it's it's always fascinating to me how when I
go into a new place, and this is my third
new place, that I've gone to Obviously that I am
synonymous with basketball because I played college basketball, I played
professional basketball. I've covered college and professional basketball throughout my career.
Now I've also hosted national radio for fifteen years, and
(01:26):
before that, for a year, I worked in local radio
in Oklahoma City, to which you cover three sports, football,
spring football, and recruiting and um. When you cover national sports,
you cover football first, second, and usually third, and then
you get to some NBA big name stuff in the
n c A tournament time in March. Then there's a
little bit of college basketball. For the most part, national
(01:47):
sports radio is football based and then big name, big
topic based after that. But because I played, and my
brother coach, and actually I'm I'm leaving for Israel, going
to be broadcasting the show from Israel over the next
up of the weeks to coach a team overseas. Because
I I coached some I tinker with coaching, and basketball
such a part of my gene pool. I'm synonymous with
(02:09):
the sport. But I can tell you that all sports
are the same. In what we saw in with the
Minnesota Timberwolves last night, you have to have a rabbi
in the room. Look when you go to work somewhere
if you're gonna change jobs. People may make decisions to
(02:30):
change jobs for a myriad of reasons. The worst reason,
although there is, there does come a point to which
you have to do it based upon money, right Like
if if the money is just obscenely different, you're probably
gonna have to do it. Because Republicans, Democrats, independence doesn't matter.
We're all capitalists at heart, right that that that money
(02:50):
doesn't buy you anything, but it does buy you something.
If it doesn't buy you everything, but it does buy
you something. But I still think that's among the worst
reasons to change jobs. You change jobs for a better opportunity,
for a better quality of life. But the best jobs
(03:11):
that you will change for have somebody in there who
you've worked with before, understands you your quirks, You understand
them and their quirks. They want a champion you because
they're hiring you, and you want a champion them because
you believe in them. You need to have somebody who's
willing to stand on the desk, stand on the table
(03:32):
and go, that's my guy. You need a Rabbi in
the room. And I would agree that Jimmy Butler is
not a great alpha. He hasn't lad Well. In Chicago,
he was thought of as being a prima donna because
one of the things that happened with Jimmy Butler and
this does this happens at ESPN a great deal. I
(03:53):
I spent my first ten years of my professional broadcasting
career at ESPN, where when you come up from the
proverbial mail room, you know, when you when you come
up from a guy who wasn't expected to do much
but be a rotation guy like Jimmy Butler, and you
become the star of the team instead of everyone championing that.
(04:14):
There will be some people who are jealous, well he's
different now that he has a lot of money, Like, yeah,
he's he's he's different. There are more people who want things.
There are more things you know, there are more things
to do. You will drive a different car, you will
live in a different neighborhood. You will probably have a
couple of different friends as well as your old time friends.
(04:36):
Now that's not to say that changing on your friends
is a good thing. It's not. It's just the reality
of Hey, when you change tax brackets, when you start
making twenty five million year, when you're the go to player.
There's different you. You're giving a press conference every night,
every practice, every post game. You're the one who has
(04:56):
to be up there answering questions. And so you can
tell me that Jimmy Butler has got to be the
same guy he was before he got the money. But
he's not. The media doesn't look him that way, the
fans will look him at that that way. The coaches
expect more of him, so he has to have more
and something will suffer. But the reason that it makes
(05:16):
sense in Minnesota is not because Minnesota's gonna win to
be a championship. That's not the point of this. Like
this is how random the NBA draft is. None of
these guys are gonna help teams win this year. I
mean not. There's not gonna be something. Uh yeah, Like
I like Lonzo Ball, I'm intrigued by what he does
with the Lakers, but the Lakers on a playoff teams
are currently comprised up. It The crazy thing about this draft,
(05:38):
as I told you would happened yesterday, end up happening
last night. We started talking about a team we didn't
expect to because the veteran players that are moved are
more interesting than the rookies that are drafted. Tom Thibodeaux
had his greatest success in Chicago. His greatest success story
(05:58):
was Jimmy Butler, who he helped draft out of Marquette,
helped mold into an All star. Thibodeau went to Minnesota
last year, and on paper, it looked like a great fit.
You bring hard knows, old school coach who coaches, preaches,
teaches the right way, playing great defense with great toughness,
(06:22):
and you have all these new age talents from Zach
Levine to Chris Dunn to Carl Anthony Towns to Gorgi
dang Uh And of course you know you you throw
in there, Andrew Wiggins. You had these young guys. You're
bringing a fundamentally sound old school coach who climbed his
(06:42):
way to the top of the ladder from the absolute
dung pile of the c B A and every other
minor league. And on paper, it seemed like a perfect fit.
Could not have been any better. But games aren't played
on paper, Kenny Maine says it right, They're played inside
television sets, right, And so he struggled to get the
(07:05):
team to play any sort of defense. Karl Anthon Town
is a terrible defensive player, and so what does he do?
He not only goes out and gets an All Star
in Jimmy Butler. And Jimmy Butler was miscast because Butler
kind of like Phil Jackson. We've seen the Peter principal
get to that in a moment. And Butler, you can't
(07:29):
win a championship when Jimmy Butler's your best player, and
ain't happen. But if Jimmy Butler's your second or third
best player in terms of offensive skill, now you've got
something going. And just like Butler needs somebody who believes
in him, who knows how to get the most out
of him, the best, the best possible version of himself
in Tom Thibodeau. Thibodeaux, in turn, needs a rabbi in
(07:50):
the locker room. You've got a bunch of young guys
who never wanted anything, don't understand the NBA. They think
it's all about their final stat line, not about who
wins and loses, and what you're what you're, what you do.
At the defensive end. You bring in Jimmy Butler, who
demands respect of his teammates, not just because of his
personality but also because of his success in the league,
(08:14):
and by Tom Thibodeau throwing a lifeline to Jimmy Butler
in the sinking ship that is the Chicago Bulls. That
security works both ways. Now he brings in Butler, and
Butler is not only his guy that he can stand by,
but Butler can say that the head coach is his guy,
(08:36):
and he will stand by. It's called having a rabbi
in the room, somebody who will forever be in your debt,
forever you will forever be in their blessings. And what
Tips did last night was genius. Chicago Bulls were like
a three legged chair with a guy standing on it,
(08:57):
and Thibodeau kicked out the third lag. As the Bulls
are going to sink into the abyss and missed the
playoffs and years for at least the coming year, they
are hitting refresh. They're walking past the xbox and pressing
restart or turning on and off the power button. Meanwhile,
the Minnesota Timberwolves have a rabbi in the room. Right.
(09:24):
Jimmy Butler had kind of worn out, is welcome as
a quasi leader of the Bulls. Now he goes to
a place with a guy who believes in him, and
he believes in the coach. And even if they weren't,
they didn't have the perfect working relationship when they were
in the Chicago, the fact was that they were better
together than they were separate. And by helping each other out,
they can help each other out. That's the way it works,
(09:50):
all right. Then you have the Danny Manning Danny Ainge
thing where he's quoted as saying that they would take
they would have taken Jason Tatum number one overall, and
then he comes out today and says, BOI sure is uh,
he sure is different. I mean that we would we
(10:14):
would have at least would like that. We were bitter
that that Josh Jackson did not come in and let
us take a look and look, I don't understand this either.
I'd understand the agent philosophy. And we have a guy
who's up to being the top pick or top couple
picks in the NBA draft. Why wouldn't you want to
work out for a team whether they have the first,
the second, or the third pick, Like, what what is
(10:35):
the what is the harm in it? There is no
harm in it. If the guy can play. It's a
one on not none workout. You can't work out on air.
You were gonna work out anyway, but it really hurts
the credibility of what you're saying. If you're Danny Ainge,
if you were sure that you want to draft, uh
(10:57):
Jayson Tatum, why were you so set on having to
work out Josh Jackson in the last week before the draft?
All Right, there's so much to get to. Who we liked,
we didn't like. Uh, We're gonna take you around the
(11:17):
country and get you updates on Paul George, Will that
Boston Celtics trade be done? Will Kevin love being Cleveland?
Will it be a three team deal? LaMarcus Aldritch was
not moved last night? What now for the San Antonio Spurs?
Sam Aymings gonna join us upcoming next I'm gonna ask
(11:40):
Sam about last night's draft and how the draft continues
to evolve. I'll tell him who I liked. We'll find
out who he liked. But more than anything, I'm sure
we're all we're both gonna sit there and go all
those guys that were drafted last night, we're not really
into them or believe that they're going to uh truly
help their team win this year? You know, win, And
(12:05):
by by whin, I don't mean win a cup more games,
I mean win in the playoffs. So alright, sam Ammick
from US Saturday, up coming next cover in the NBA.
But first, you could become the King of flavor, the
maestro of any outdoor cookout, amazed with steaks seared at
seven fifty degrees roast uh perfectly roasted chicken. Become the
(12:27):
neighborhood pizza maister, and the CEO of low and slow.
But a matter of fact, tomorrow I have my my
basketball teams, twelve players, three coaches. We've got a couple
of their kids coming over. There. There's seventeen people coming over,
and I'm using the big green egg. Um. My intent
tomorrow is to slow cook a pork shoulder on right,
(12:49):
makes some pulled poor tacos. But then my my wife
nudges me and she's like, hey, you know, uh, this
is actually a Jewish event, and some people keep koshers.
I was like, oh, all right. So then I went
to the steaks. So I got some chops that we're
gonna see here at eight hundred degrees. The thing is big,
The thing is fantastic. They cook them perfectly with you grill,
(13:11):
you kick, low and slow, you bake, you smoke, you roast.
The egg retains heat and moisture so well that foods
just don't dry out. Poultry, beef, vegetables naturally taste better
when they're locked inside. Go to Big Green egg dot
com to find an authorized dealer near you. That's Big
Green egg dot com. With True Car, you can find
(13:31):
out what other people in your area paid for the
same car you're looking for, and on average, save over
three thousand off M s r P. Were you looking
for a new or used car. Visit True Car to
enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug Gotlip Show, Fox
Sports Radio. So as much as the trade that did happen,
uh is the talk of the NBA, maybe it's the
(13:53):
trades that to this point have not happened equally the
talks of the NBA. Let's welcome in Sam Amick from
USA today kind of join us. The day after the
NBA draft, Uh, your initial reaction when you saw that
Jimmy Butler was going to Minnesota, Doug, you know, surprised,
I mean not shocked, because this is the storyline that
that we had. It's a year ago, right, we're Tom
(14:14):
Thibodeau at that point was trying to speed up his
team's timeline in Minnesota and reunite with Jimmy, you know,
and so it resurfaces. It heats up pretty quickly once
you see all the pieces involved. I think the surprise
is that Jimmy Butler, a three time All start in
his prime at twenty seven years old. Uh, couldn't Net
(14:36):
Lauren returning to the Bulls, you know? I I, on
the one hand, I think the only thing positive going
forward for bull fans is you have direction, you have
a clear dedication to rebuilding. But I mean it's pretty
mind blowing that you know, you've got Chris Don's stack
lavine and then essentially a pick swap between seven and sixteen.
I think very highly in Jimmy's game. I think two
(14:58):
way talents in this league are as important as ever,
and I think he's gonna really help Minnesota. I just
I thought Chicago could have done better. But the intel
that you know, not surprisingly that you're here to this
point is if that's the best they had right now,
so they pulled the trigger, yeah, which which leads you
to ask the question, why didn't the Celtics extend themselves more.
I mean, I know he supposedly doesn't get along with
(15:20):
Jay Crowder, his former college teammate, But if that's all
they had to give up in order to get Jimmy Butler, boy,
the Celtics had a ton to offer, didn't really need
Jayson Tatum. Is he couldn give up a could have
swapped picks with a third pick and maybe gave up
less uh less in order to do so. That doesn't
feel like Danny Ainge might might have missed this trade
(15:40):
opportunity based upon uh what Minnesota had to get to
get Jimmy Butler. It does I mean, I think it's
probably safe to presume and connect dots here and say, Okay,
maybe they're still hopeful on a Paul George front that
something like that happens, and maybe they think higher Paul
again than they do Jimmy. Uh they could have gotten
(16:00):
I mean, clearly they could have gotten to Jimmy Butler
deal done if they put more of their chips on
the table. And you know what we were certainly told,
and what's kind of obvious to anybody watching this is
that they did not put the number three on the table.
They did not put the Brooklyn pick next year on
the table and and Danny's hearing it today, you know
what I mean, it's it's kind of the same old
(16:21):
storyline of this asset collection and patience and plotting and
and I think the Calves play a part here where
that competitive gap between Cleveland and Boston. I mean, even
though Boston got the number one seed, you know, or
maybe it's a warrior's thing. Maybe they just feel like,
you know, that's not gonna be enough to get them
over the top with Jimmy and giving up those assets
(16:41):
to get them, and so they're gonna still try to
go a different way, all right. So what happens to
Dwayne Wade? Does he get bought out? I don't know.
I mean Benny Goodwill, who does a nice job for
Comcast in Chicago, had reported last night that, uh, it
changes nothing about Dwayne's perception of you know, the way
he sees this season. He told David Aldridge of Turner
(17:02):
that there were twenty four million reasons that he picked
up that option. Um, I actually look at look at
snapchat this morning, and I never thought that those words
that are coming out of the mouth day and age
and I followed Dayne Wade and uh, he was having
a great time in Paris with his significant other, Gabrielle
Union and Jimmy Butler was with them at a cigar bar,
(17:25):
having a good old time, and he didn't look like
he was sweating much. I mean, I think that, you know, Dwayne,
if I had the handicap, it plays the season out
and just knows that maybe next summer he goes and
joined the buddy Lebronsonwhere will that be in Cleveland? Will
that be in Los Angeles? And if in Los Angeles,
with which team? I'm gonna go with recency bias, and
(17:48):
this could certainly change. We had a lot of time
between now and then, But I'm just gonna go with
the vibe of the moment, which is that that's going
to be in Los Angeles, fueled and inspired by the
function in Cleveland right now. Now, if they hired Jouncey Billups,
if they settle these waters, if you know, Dan Gilbert
stops looking like Dan Gilbert of old and Lebron can
(18:10):
be happy with the organization again, then maybe that changes.
But right now, if you're like they are, you know,
the Calves are giving Lebron so much cover from a
pr standpoint if he wants to leave in addition to
the fact, but I do think there are substantive reasons
that he might want to leave. He's got a ton
of business in l A. He's got a home in
l A. Rumblings that his wife would rather be in
(18:31):
l A. We always forget. That always plays a part
and where it would be. It's I don't know the
answer to that, but it's super compelling because the Clippers,
and I wrote this the other day, when they hired
Garry West as a consultants and don't let that settle
fool you. There paying the man between four and five
million dollars a year. His relationship with Lebron was to
(18:53):
the Clippers seen as an X factor, potential recruiting tool
to get Lebron their direction. On the other side, obviously,
magic moves the needle and the Lakers are trying to
get themselves in a good spot for next summer. So
we'll see Sam Mammick from US say today joining US
Doug Gatlam show Fox Sports Radio day after the NBA Draft, Um,
what about LaMarcus Aldridge. He his name was floated as
(19:15):
possible trade fodder. That's a that's a marriage that doesn't
appear to be one that's gonna go with the distance
they did. The Spurs did what they almost never do,
which is go for a high piet price free agent.
And though two years ago in the regular season's first year,
it worked, it didn't in the playoffs, and then it
was worse this year. What's the endgame there, considering they
(19:36):
didn't trade him for a pick yesterday. I don't know
where it goes. I think that the Spurs and you know,
notorious for they're you know, being have due diligence patients,
all those things. They're gonna do what guys for the group.
All of which is to say, I mean, I would
not be shocked if LaMarcus didn't go anywhere played out
the season, but it's not a very comfortable situation. The
(19:58):
rumblings about him questioning the fit have been there for
a long long time, and people in Portland told you
from day one. The part that puzzled them about his
free agency choice two summers ago is that this might
sound you know, this is I'm not picking sides here,
but that he was, you know, just not a very
Spurs type player personality wise. Uh, there's not I don't
(20:21):
love every single part of how the Spurs operate, and
I think at times they take, you know, their mantras
and theirs a little too far, and I think they
should have found a way to meet in the middle
with a markets. The bottom line right now Doug is
he's not digging a fit. He's not digging the scrutiny
and the fact that he got made out to be
the goat during the playoffs when he didn't play well,
(20:42):
when a while Leonard got hurt, Tony Parker was out
um and then pop is putting them on last in
front of the media. All that stuff has led to
him making it very clear the organization that if you
can find a better home for me, that would be
my preference. Is there a better home for him, I
don't know. I mean, Phoenix is told they had nothing
going yesterday. I thought that was a key potential landing
(21:05):
spot because of the backstory, because of the fact that
he two summers ago it was either Phoenix or San
Antonio for the Markets, and it doesn't seem like they
were all that interested in going back down that road again.
The Portland's thing is reportedly definitely not going to happen,
at least be a trade. I do think maybe in
free agency next summer the markets kind of turns back
(21:27):
time and considers Portland's I don't know where else it
would be. Sacramento is going to be in the rumors
for everything, mainly because they have potentially like forty two
million dollars in capital this summer, so you know, if
you wanted to just get a guy and create room,
Sacramentos and options. So we'll have to wait and see.
(21:48):
Sam Mammy joining us on the Doug Gottlives Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. You talked to everybody in the league.
Is there a team based upon what they did in
the draft that people are saying, Hey, they did really
really well. Um this you know listen, I'm based in
northern California, so this is kind of right in front
of me. Maybe that's why the Kings come to mind.
But the King's, shockingly enough, are getting rave reviews. Uh.
(22:11):
They the backstory years, you got an owner and they'll
make it quick. But in the background of Davy, who
couldn't get out of his own way, was too much influence,
too much of a voice, not letting the basketball people
do their jobs. He had a lot of devots a
very inexperienced executive who had, you know, at different times
than a punching bag in the media. And then they
added Scott Perry. It was respective executive that doing this
(22:35):
for a long time, part of the Pistons championship team
in Detroit. Ken Catanella another former Detroit guy. They got
more experience in the front office. And then they go
out and they get the guy they wanted at number five,
and darn Fox extremely excited. There's this Vibo video out
there of a Sacramento media member and showing the fan
reaction in a restaurant. I mean, the fans went crazy
(22:56):
in this joint as if they won Game seven of
the finals. They're they're very happy about the eron. Then
they make a real prudent move, but number ten and
you trade it with Portland for the fifteen and you
get Justin Jackson at fifteen. Uh, you got Harry Giles
at twenty a lot of upside uh. And then you know,
even Frank Jackson thirty four in the second round. So
(23:18):
they feel like they got four players who could actually
be in their rotation within the next couple of years.
And I've seen a lot of good phrase about them.
So I think they did in this job, Okay. Kevin
Pritchard said that Paul George put them in a bad
spot by announcing that he wouldn't resign with the Pacers.
There was talk of him going to the Celtics last night,
(23:38):
there's talk of that that's still being a possibility. Where
does Paul George play the first game of next season? Um,
the Boston thing has got the most legs to it
at the moment, I don't I don't know. You know,
Portland's does not, especially in a a lot of the fact
that they just actually drafted. You know, picks a lot
of times are more valuable than players because they you know,
(24:00):
they come to control of that that team being able
to do what they want. So now they that they've
actually made these picks, Portland doesn't feel like it has
the assets they get something done. Uh like it Paul George. So,
you know, I just don't know who else is gonna
make that happen. By the way, Doug I had dropped
the name earlier Frank Mason at thirty four for the King. Sorry,
(24:22):
the Paul thing. I think it's all eyes on Boston.
You know. Now Minnesota's got the guys that they want.
I'm trying to think who I'm forgetting it's it's here's
my thing on the Lakers are They're just gonna lay
in the weeds. And if Boston gets serious, and if
Boston is putting the cunt on the table, then the
(24:44):
Lakers are gonna reinsert themselves into the conversation because their
preferences to this wait until next summer. You know, they
were floating things like Julius Randall and one of their
late first round picks in order to get Paul. But
they're also trying too to be patient and not make
that I keep using this comparison, not make the same
(25:05):
mistake that Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks made so many
years ago when they traded for him from Denver and
they gave up the house to get him. All these players,
they could have helped Melo and the Knicks be more
competitive if he was coming up on free agency at
that time, but he wanted his cash, uh, you know,
and they went that route and they paid a price.
They saw that they were never nearly as competitive as
(25:25):
they wanted to be. The Lakers are already bad enough
they can't afford to give up any assets they need
to wait for Paul and free agency because they know
he wants to come their way. But the only caveat
is if he's gonna wind up in a place like
Boston where it's a pretty cool atmosphere. Fans are pretty excited.
Right now, you're gonna win a lot of games. Maybe
that changes his mind in free agency next summer, then
(25:46):
maybe they need to go ahead and do a trade.
Sam Ammit great stuff reading follow on Twitter, read his
work in USA Today. We always appreciate having you on
Fox Sports Radio. Sam, thanks so much for helping us
get caught up after the NBA draft. No, all right,
that's that's Sam a McK wait, you hear what Kevin
Pritchard actually had to say. Plus uh, Danny Ainge none
(26:07):
too happy over someone else's first round draft pick. That
after we find out what's trending. Now is a fantastic
time to buy a new Honda. Visit shop Honda dot com,
Visit your local Honda dealer. Today, Doug Olive Show, Fox
Sports Radio, I have no idea what the Atlanta Hawks
are doing. I mean, you know, once you get out
of the top seven or eight in the NBA draft,
(26:28):
now you're just kind of you know, reaching and uh,
you know, there's there's just a team. I like the
idea of what Sacramento is doing, you know, like Darren
Dear and Fox is a great kid, and so Frank Mason.
I mean I pay to see Frank Mason, Dear and
Fox go at it every day in practice. Um, but
(26:50):
I mean like the idea that they're gonna win a
bunch of games. They they're starting the process of changing
their culture. We talked about continuums right, talking about the
continue them of talent versus intangibles, and they drafted guys
that great at Justin Jackson, great intangibles, but do they
have the tangibles? Right? Do they have? You're in the
(27:12):
Western Conference where the Portland Trailblazers have Damian Lillard and
that was the eighth seed. Let's see what happens with
Utah with it out they blow up or stay stayed together.
The Clippers. You can make fun of the Clippers all
you want when healthy, that was a fifty two in team.
Won't you got Blake? Yeah, Chris Paul, you got We'll
(27:32):
see what I was with Ja Reddick via DeAndre Jordan's
like that's they all three. Those are three players better
than anybody on your team. So it doesn't mean that
you're not laying the the groundwork for getting to be
really good. But um uh, but you know, look, it's
(27:59):
a long way to go for Sacramento. Before you freak out.
I like what Golden State did? I just do. I
like the Golden State went and got Jordan Bell and
Jordan Belt. They have plenty of offensive players, but like,
if you think that, uh, what Tristan Thompson is is effective,
Jordan Bell is a better athlete. Neither can Neither can shoot,
(28:22):
but Bell can actually make a fifteen footer more than anything.
Bell is a freak shop blocker and an indefatigable rebounder.
I love it. And then they got his teammate, Chris
Boucher on a on a free agent contract, who seven
foot can shoot threes, can also block shots. I like
what they did with not a ton of work with
they bought into getting Jordan Bell, and I thought that
(28:43):
was really those are He'll make the team, he'll make
their rotation, he'll be one of their ten. You got
Pat McCaw who's going to be a tremendous defender, and
Jordan Bell like you're supplementing your offense with defense off
the bench. That's why Bob Byers has two championship brings.
In addition to the fact, Yes and star players heard
(29:08):
this from Kevin Pritchard. We we talked about it with
sam Ay make here's Pritchard reacting to Paul George and
his people putting it out there that he's not going
to return after next year. It couldn't have come at
a worse time for me. If we would have known
this a few months ago, I think we could have
been a little bit more prepared. And then the way
it got out was a little struggling to us. We
(29:30):
struggled with that we want our players to be here.
That's important, it really is. And when Paul said he didn't,
it's a gut punch, it's a gut punch. Um, It's
it's a hard deal, right, It's a hard deal. Like
I understand that that Paul probably wanted it out there,
(29:50):
and you know, at some point it's it's like Marissa
Tomay Ramos. You know, when I say Marissa Tolmay, there's
one line from her long and still read acting career
that everybody knows about Ramos read my mind right now.
By the way, just so you know, I'm broadcasting from Hamden, Connecticut.
Or I Heart Studios in Hampton, Connecticut. Ramos is in
(30:11):
Los Angeles. Ramos read my mind. When I say Marissa Tomay,
what am I thinking about? Attractive woman? Yeah? Is Dan?
Is Dan Buyer available? She is an attractive woman? Is
Dan Buyer available? Hold on one second? Let me yeah,
I know you do. I just I want to know
if they're Dan Dan. When I say Marissa Tomay and
(30:34):
a line she had in a movie? What what movie
would it be? Oh? Jeez, my cousin Vinnie. Yes, what
what what line? Um? I don't know. I didn't see it.
I just knew it from Seinfeld. So that's never wait
you never saw my cousin. I'm not a movie guy.
Never wait what wait wait, hold on wait, you're a
guy who doesn't like movies. I didn't know that exists.
(30:57):
So like if I throw out, like Caddy Shack, Animal
House all the way, good Animal House? No, father, No,
I wouldn't. You haven't watched it or you didn't like it.
I haven't seen it. No, I haven't seen it. But yeah,
but I haven't seen you. No, I haven't seen my
cousin Vinnie. You haven't seen. So if I say that
the two Utes, you have no idea what I'm talking about.
(31:17):
So if I say my biological clock is taken over here,
nothing nothing nothing, I just I just thought from something's
happened to me. Well, I'm at CBS. I'm working with
these guys, and they haven't seen that. They're all like
thirty years older, younger. They're like music, you know, right,
like they just they literally just just just took their
(31:37):
prom date back home last night, right, And so they
have they're not old enough to know. They don't even
know what they don't know, right. You you tell them
old school Big East, and they start talking about boot
see Thornton be like, oh you remember the Detroit Lions
back in the day, and you're thinking they're talking about
You're talking about Barry Sanders and they're talking about Reggie Bush. Right,
(31:59):
they have no have no sense. And now I work
with gentleman like the Empire is a gentleman, rob mosas gentlemen.
You guys don't know my cousin Vinny, the two utes.
But more important, when I say, Marissa Tomay, the only
thing that should go through your mind is and my
biological clock is taken over here. That's the only thing
you should know. Nothing. You guys have no idea what
(32:20):
I'm talking. I don't know how this happened to me.
He's been recommended to me. I do have a book
that's recommended. I'll talk to about the later in the show.
All right, So, look, I think that Paul George, he's
like Merissa tomay In in my cousin Vinny. His biological
clock is ticking. He's like, look, I'm like I was
(32:41):
like twenty eight years old. He's watching all these other
guys and he's you know, he got frustrated playing against
the Cavs. He passed to c. J. Miles, who doesn't
make a shy, doesn't get the ball back, he doesn't
have good enough teams. Like I'm not gonna waste another
year in indie. I'm gonna go to l A And
if I let this information out, they'll have to trade
me right now. They won't trade me under false pretenses
(33:02):
like let's get it done. Why would I waste a
year of my prime playman playing an indie where I
barely make the playoffs only to get dusted by the Calves, no,
thank you. His biological clock is ticking. I heard this
one from Danny. This is Danny Ainge, who on one
hand set, oh we don't. Danny Age, on one hand
said we were taking Jayson Tatum number one overall, which
(33:27):
that sounds great. Then why did you want Jason Josh
Jackson to come in and work out? We were so
sure that we weren't sure. But look, I agree with
Kevin Pritchard, it did come in an opportune time. Paul
George could have been traded at the trade deadline like
we all thought he would be. But I also don't
(33:50):
fault Paul George for letting it out, get it out there,
because he's like, look, this is the prime. This is
as good as I'm ever going to be. He's watching
Kevin Durant, who's the exact same age, go and do
work and be viewed as one of the great players
in the history of the league. But we're having the
discussion on radio one on TV is he better than
than Lebron James. That only happens because he's on a
team that plays competitive late into the playoffs. His body,
(34:13):
the logical clock is ticking, all right. Coming up next,
guy's got me depressed here on a Friday, man, just
I mean my cousin Vinnie. It's it's that's I mean,
that's like, you know, you're supposed to read Chaucer and
all these other great historic novels. There's certain movies that
(34:34):
you have two guys have to see. You have to know.
When I say the two ut, you're like, oh, my
gusin Vinny, how good was that? That's like the only
other thing you remember Ralph Maccio from Karate Kid and
my cousin Vinnie. We'll dig into my sack and see
what see what we can shake out. Next Broadcasting live
(34:57):

(35:18):
Mm hm m m m m m m m m
m m m m m. Herbert Hulahan tweets me, I
know movies, I know biological clock. I live near your studio.
I can help. I'm a man, I'm forty two. Thank you, Herbert.
I appreciate that. I think this is not about your successes.
It's more about the failings of my coworkers. That's really
(35:38):
what this is about. That's what it's about. Their gentleman uh,
their sports savants. They're great to work with. But everybody
has a whole right, everybody has like a like. I
don't tell people this all the time, but you know
I have great recall for games. I don't know anything
that happened in the n c A tournament in two
(36:00):
thousand one, two thousand two, two thousand three. I don't
know anything because I was playing overseas. I don't know it.
So at least Dan Buyers like, I'm not much of
a movie guy, which means, please God, don't ask me
about movie stuff. Right, Buyer knows a ton of sports
(36:21):
anything anything Green Bay Milwaukee. Brewer knowledge at in addition
to anything else he's covered for over ten years. Um,
I know how long he's actually been. How long you've
been a Fox Sports trade because I remember because they
did what's called they wrapped our studios. Say they did
a spiffy job of redoing the studio yesterday, or at
least it's more visually pleasing, and he said, well, for
(36:41):
eight years you looked at the same wall twelve years,
twelve years, twelve years. Quite a change twelve years. And
then you know one NBA Draft show and uh and
and suddenly it's bright blue. It says we are Fox Sports.
It's great, it's great. Boom our walls have changed. I
like the ship like you're throwing boom in there as well.
I do. I appreciate that. I appreciate that. Let's find
(37:03):
out what Dan Buyer finds in my sack. Let's reach
into godly sack. What you gotten there? Then let's see
what we've got today. It's a little case of all right,
here we go. Guess who dug called the Bulls organization
is having the worst culture in the league and said
(37:23):
drug dealers have better morals than Bulls GM gar Foreman.
Guess who said that, Um, Jimmy Butler close his train. Yeah, sorry,
Draymond travel Gaines is the one who said that, sending
out a tweet. He also threw in an oh and
eighty two after Jimmy Butler was dealt by the Bulls
(37:45):
to the Minnesota Timberwolves. I don't understand if you're trade
maybe because you're trade, but if you're traded to Minnesota
like you, you're already gone. The first tweets enough. I
don't know why I need a D two understand that one. Anyway,
That's that's an interesting you know. That's that's setting fire
to the bridge with gasoline and a blowt storch. Hey,
guess who in the NFL Doug thinks they can put
(38:06):
on as big as a draft in the city of
Philadelphia did as Philly had two hundred and fifty thousand
people attending the outdoor event over three days. Who thinks
they can put on just as big of a show
as phil as Philadelphia? Yes, yes, Dallas Cowboys No, Well
they may think, but I'll tell you what. It's the
city of Green Bay who's talking about it. Yes, Green
(38:27):
Bay says that they could put on just as big
of a draft as the city of Philadelphia did. Brad
told the Green Bay president of the city's Convention Center
and Visitors Bureau, says that the gut feeling is they
would have enough people with the Titletown District being built
the Rest Center where u W Green Bay ends up
playing their college basketball games. I told you he was
going to go something. Wisconsin that's that's what we've got.
(38:50):
So green Bay in the running. The question is the
hotel rooms could be an issue. Philly has a lot
lot more than green Bay does, but the city of
green Bay looking to hold the end felled drafts. I
think they're gonna move it around. But Dallas is gonna
get it. Dallas built this ridiculous new facility. That's who's
gonna get it. Then I think l A gets it
as well once they get the new stadium up and running.
Or maybe they'll just put it in the Kodak Theater.
(39:12):
That makes a ton of sense. I don't mind it
bouncing around the league, um, especially a historic place like
Green Bay. And the problem is in the spring, is
the weather gonna be nice? You can always move it back.
Doug Guess who found out that his crew chief had
their notes for this weekend's race at Sonoma stolen from
his rental car. Yes, what NASCAR driver doesn't have notes
(39:36):
for this weekend's race? Uh, somebody named Jimmy Johnson. Yes.
Chad Canal says his brief briefcase was stolen from his
car in San Francisco when he and his wife went
to dinner for ninety minutes at Fisherman's Wharf, the window
of their rental was smashed. Their luggage remained in the car,
but the computer that was in the briefcase, along with
their notes and some art supplies of his wife, also
(39:59):
went missing. Now as much as a non NASCAR fan
can say that the notes said go left to go left,
Lea's Oma right correct Sonoma, it's a uh, that's that's
a course, the road course. So it's a little bit different.
So there's they go right, then go left, they go right,
(40:20):
then go left. My guesses in San Francisco, that's not
what they were looking for. And that was Scott lead Sack.
That is what's in got Leaves Sack a Lonzo ball.
Will it work? I'll tell you next in the Doug
Gotlip Show. What Uppisite Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
(40:44):
M m mmm. So there was a lot of things
that took place last night in the NBA Draft that
were quasi interesting. Um, we'll at to why up coming
later on in the hour. Why Drew Stanton thinks the
NFL has a quarterback problem. Um, I've heard a lot
(41:09):
of different opinions on LaVar ball, and you know what
I would love your opinion eight on Fox. Let me
give you a couple of thoughts here. As Lonzo Ball
was selected as the number two pick in the NBA draft,
should be pointed out that the number two pick, with
the exception with a couple exceptions, Um, the number to
(41:34):
pick has been probably the biggest bust of the of
the NBA draft in recent memory. Right like, you go
back and you look at number two picks Michael Kidd, Gill,
Chris Derrick Williams, Evan Turner, Hashim the beat, Michael Beasley.
(41:59):
They did ever two Texas players in Row Kevin Durant,
LaMarcus Aldridge, Marvin Williams fine a mecha okal for Darko,
Milita's Jay Williams Strow, Miles Swift. So you go back
since stro Mile Swift was two thousand. Since two thousand,
Tyson Chandler has had a really good career. Took him
a while, He's right out of high school. With the
(42:21):
exception of Tyson Chandler, LaMarcus Aldridge, Kevin Durant, and I
would guess Victor Oladipo, who is better than I thought,
but not as good as his stats. UM would tell you, Uh,
that has been a position that you know, ten and
(42:42):
last fifteen years you've had bus set, You've had bus set.
So LaVar Ball wins, and and people are right to
be mad about it. You're like, why why should that
guy who manipulates the media, who says crazy things, why
should he win? But the truth is he didn't win,
his son did. But he did win on on this aspect.
(43:05):
I know people in that organization that will sit there
and go like, hmm, I liked Aaron Fox a little
bit better. He's a better defensive player, He's a better athlete.
So um, I I think that in many ways, LaVar
Ball help push Alonzo over the edge into becoming an
(43:30):
l a Laker. Now. I don't think marv Ronovitch got
Todd rividstracted by the Raiders. But that was the last
over involved parent that we saw. That was the last
one in Los Angeles with his son playing for a
hometown team. That one obviously, and it did in drug abuse.
(43:54):
But I look at this and I'm I'm thinking about like,
I didn't like the LaVar Ball thing because I felt
like covering him at the time was not covering the story.
It was. I didn't want to repeat the exact same
thing that we had done in the media in covering
Donald Trump, which is we may have laughed at Donald
Trump's campaign early, but we covered every crazy thing on
(44:18):
you know, from a Republican debates to everything he said,
and it ended up energizing popularizing him. It became it
became the lifeblood of his campaign. And once I was
like thirteen others running, there's nothing they could do. Yes,
he was polarizing, but we've gotten this zerra where polarizing
(44:42):
and and popular somehow become intertwined. People are interested by
the outlandish. Others at this company disagreed. Others at other
companies disagreed. And even if they didn't like what Lavarre
had to say, it was like catnip to the masses.
They kept feeding that the crazy dad would come in
(45:03):
and say crazy things, and let's go get the crazy
dad that goes say crazy things. But he wasn't crazy
about his kid. Who's the number two overall pick in
the NBA draft last night. Um, I don't think you
can fool players. I do think it's interesting. You know.
The Lakers second Summer League game in Las Vegas is
(45:24):
against the Sacramento Kings against dear and Fox, who had
his own dad who said his own thing about their
two matchups. But I'm fascinated by it. And I'm also
fascinating because I will admit that as much as LaVar
irritated me, Like, look, I had a dad that was
too involved, but he never he was never in front
(45:47):
of an open microphone, would say my team's gonna win
national championship, and I'm better than Steph Curry and I'm
visiting him never. Never. On the other hand, the kid
has lived up to most of the hype. The kid
will have to play and frankly, LaVar's braggadocious style, his
(46:09):
outlandish behavior made his son the most interesting draft pick
of any of the draft picks last night. Like, it's
pretty interesting that four years ago, the three years ago,
excuse me, Mark hell Folts was a JV player with
no scholarship offers. Now he's like, that's really really interesting,
(46:29):
isn't it. It's pretty interesting that Justin Patton, who was
taken in the first round. Uh, when he committed to Creton,
he read shirted his first year and then played one
year and then went to the pros. He grew late,
he wasn't heavily recruited early. Creton got on him, then
he blew up. But I mean justin Patton only playing
one year as a red shirt freshman, leaving Cretner Like,
(46:50):
that's an interesting story. None of those, All those stories
paled in comparison to the whether it's a train wreck
or whether it's it's just a manipulate tion of the media.
Alonzo Ball is of the players that were drafted. He's
gonna be the one that you're gonna remember the most.
He's gonna be the one that you look to to
(47:12):
see how he succeeds, not just in stats, but in
wins and losses and how his dad handles himself. He's
in Los Angeles, he's playing for magic. The kid can
really pass, but can he get by anybody? The whole
thing is fascinating. So here's what we're gonna do. We're
gonna call it right now. Does it work? Does it
(47:33):
not work? Even though there's something I'm not telling you
about this exercise Ryan music? Does it work? Does it
not work? A Lonzo Ball in the Lakers? It works?
To what level they will be a playoff team? Not
this season, this upcoming scenes, abu the following okay, uh Ramos, Well,
(47:58):
does it work? Does it not work? I think it works.
But I think he's the type of guy that people
want to come and watch play, so I think it
helps for the fans and a helps for the Lakers
to do their publicity stuff or they need a lot
of good publicity since their team wasn't that good. So yes,
I think it works. Okay, Now it's important that people
want to understand this, that we do operate under this
(48:18):
assumption that people are gonna come and watch the Lakers
play because he's interesting and because of the story, right,
which I don't actually think is First of all, the
Lakers never have any trouble drawing. Even when they're bad.
They're still the Lakers, at least, we still they haven't
been long bad enough to see me. They haven't been
bad long enough dyslexic, I am. They haven't been bad
(48:41):
long enough to pollute their fans with disbelief a right,
so they still people still hope still uh springs eternal.
Last year they drew well, they drew, but the year
before they had Kobe they still drew well. They will
draw well this year, But you draw best when you win,
Dan Buyer, do you think this works. Is Alonzo ball
(49:02):
and LaVar ball playing for a Magic Johnson run team
in the long run? Yes, what's how long a run? Well?
I just think when you actually get guys who can
score around Alonzo ball, they'll even be better. But yeah, no,
there's no question. I think that's the And Dan, you're
(49:25):
smart enough to see through me. That's the one part
that nobody ever says. Right, Like people murder me for
when I thought I thought Johnny Flynn was gonna be
a really good pro. I thought Johnny Flynn was the
next um uh, what was? Why am I forgetting his name? Buyer?
He's the mayor, he was the mayor of Sacramento. Kevin Johnson.
(49:48):
I thought he was Kevin Johnson. I thought he was
praise right. I thought he was you know, a a
five eleven to six ft dynamics scoring turn the corner guard.
Remember Kevin Johnson faid nasty dunk on Alije one. That's
who I was. Now. What no one will ever tell
you is two things about why it didn't work, or
maybe even three things for why it didn't work. In Minnesota. One,
(50:11):
he played for Kurt Rambis, who run the triangle and
if you play the style that that Johnny Flynn wanted
to play. That's the opposite of what the triangle is.
The triangle is for uh is for non point guards,
is for catch and shoot jump shooters. It's for guys
that just can kind of run the offense and can
stay out of the way, or can go one on
one and get their own shot in place, or a
midrange shot like. None of that is Johnny Flynn. So
(50:33):
the offense was a terrible fit. The second thing was
they remember that year they drafted two point guards. They
wanted Rubio, but they knew Rubio wasn't coming over for
two years, so he was just there to kind of
hold the fort together. The third thing, and this is
really important, is he had a terrible surrounding cast. No
one is. You can put up numbers, but nobody cares.
(50:54):
The last thing that nobody talks about is he actually
heard his hip. It was a career ending hip injury.
I don't know if Johnny Flynn would have ever been
an All Star or even a starter at this point
in the NBA, but all those things worked against him dramatically. Dan,
you bring up a great point in that I think
you think it works eventually because you think eventually they'll
get guys around him who can make shots. And if
you look at what they did last night, you go
(51:17):
out and get Kyle Kuzma, you have brandon ingram Um.
It's it's pretty obvious. I mean, heck, even the big
kid from from Indiana. You know, you go out and
you make draft picks to try and fit your stars,
to try and open up the floor. And I agree
(51:37):
with you, he's only going to succeed if he has
you know, if he has players around him that can
make shots. Thomas Bryant from Indiana can make shots and
space the floor. So, but they're gonna need star players
to take he ain't gonna be doing it. He's I
don't think he'll be a top five, top ten player
in the NBA. Will it work, I'm gonna say it will.
I'm gonna say it will. Laker basketball is better on
(51:59):
it going up and down. I think they're going to
get some some skilled free agents they're focusing on too.
I think they'll find a way to get to Will
they win a championship or you know, the four or
five championships? Like, I'm not making that prediction, but I
think it'll work. I think you'll be good, and I
would agree with you Ryan Music. I think in two
(52:20):
years the planners to make the playoffs. I think they
could do that. Yeah, I think it's obviously you can't
get on the LaVar ball train and be like playoffs
next season, especially if if they end up not trading
any away their assets and they don't get Paul George
and they don't sign any big time free agents this
upcoming season, then I don't think a team that has Lonzo,
(52:42):
Julius Randall, Brandon Ingram, you know, players that are within
four or five years in the league, all in their
starting lineup. I just don't think that you can compete
in the West the let alone. Even if they were
in the East, it would be tough. Well, let's say again,
we think of the West as it's never going to change,
it's always going to be competitive. Let's see what happens
with the Spurs. Like I think the Spurs. I like
(53:03):
some of the things they did last night. I got
the kid from Colorado. I like a lot. Um Uh,
they got Derek White from Colorado, former Division two player.
I like a lot. But you know, we we think
of the West as the West is always going to
be the best. And I do think the Wizards are coming.
(53:24):
I do think the Celtics continue to add assets. Um.
But boy, now if you add Minnesota as a playoff team,
the West continues to grow in depth. And then it
it adds to the idea. Now the Lakers, they don't
just have to hop over the Clippers in their own city.
And of course you have the Warriors, you have the Spurs,
you have the Thunder, and now you get the Timberwolves
(53:45):
to deal with the Jazz to deal with. Drew Stanton
thinks there's a problem with quarterbacks in the National Football League.
What is the problem? Oh, I'm sorry. We're gonna get
to Drew Stanton up a minute, about fifteen minutes coming
on next. We're gonna take you. I'm gonna take you
around the NBA. Get immediate reaction from Chicago. Get immediate
(54:09):
reaction from l A. We'll get reaction to last night's
NBA draft and what it means as Chicago has kind
of blown things up and decided to start all over.
And we'll find out what now for the Lakers if
they can't get Paul George, and what the expect tastions
are for Alonzo Ball this year. That's upcoming next. But

a fantastic weekend. Boys, you guys got a good weekend
lined up. I mean you got you got big stuff,
big stuff happening. Uh Ramo's biggest thing happening for you
this weekend. Rest after last week's wedding and the week
before we did something else. That's a rest for a weekend.
Finally for the Ramo's clan. That's good. A RESTful, unrestful
(56:43):
weekend all right, Well, hopefully it's a RESTful weekend for
our next two guests because they're covering their teams, and
their teams have made moves and their teams continue to evolve.
We got people everywhere. Let's get inside a couple of
teams that made some moves last night in the NBA.
We don't know everything, but we know people that know
(57:04):
what you want to know. You know, sounds like you
need a guy. I got a guy, Sam Smith, famously
the author of the Jordan Rules. Also we go to
Bulls dot com and you can read his work or
follow on Twitter at Sam Smith hoops. Um, Sam, I
(57:24):
mean this is you want to talk about precipitous decline.
The Bulls were up two games and none on the
Celtics after beating Boston in Boston, Rondo gets hurt. They
lose in six games to the Celtics, and now they're
trading away Jimmy Butler and it it looks like they're
hitting refresh and completely overhauling their roster. What happened, Well,
(57:48):
you know, it is ironic in that in that sense
that of course in sports, we only look at things,
you know, in in reverse. If you want, you deserve
to win and that was going to be the ultimate resolve.
But yeah, you know they were up to oh on
the on the conference guy was lost in the conference finals,
and I'm convinced most of us are that they would
(58:09):
have won and had Rondo not gotten hurt, but but
he did. But the larger thing with them was, you
know that probably was an outlier in that sense. Um,
you know before the season, I'm not sure what you picked.
I didn't see a whole lot of people picked the
Bulls to make the playoffs or do much. I know
the I know the over under on Vegas was thirty
(58:31):
eight wins, so they got a little bit over that, um,
but more than that, looking forward, you know with this group,
you know, no offense to Jimmy, Jimmy's terrific player, but
where were they going? You know what what was their path? Um,
Jimmy's too good, you know that is that stuck in
the middle thing. Jimmy's too good for you to ever
be really bad? And free agency with the new cb A,
(58:55):
you know, given the extra money you know to stay home,
uh is you know inhibits on one level and on
the other level, you know, what have you got that?
So attractive with a five team. You know, Jimmy again,
you know, he was the best player two years in
a row, was All Star, All m All m b A.
And they had the forty wins the last few years
(59:17):
and didn't win the first round playoffs series. So it's
not it's not the greatest free agent appeal. So even
though you know, they got to the point, I mean,
eight teams, eight or fifteen teams make the playoffs in
the you know East, it's not that hard, but they
hadn't they it was clear they hadn't demonstrated over the
last two years that they had the ability to go
(59:39):
much farther. And so, you know, Wade still there, Rondo,
you know, you can get out from under Rondo, but
drafting out of the lottery, which you do when you
make the playoffs for the last nine years basically, and
you know, and they were on a series run for
six years, you know, with their crows, with the injuries
and all that sort of stuff, and you know, a
lot of us here are convinced they would have wanted
(01:00:00):
title head they're not gotten hurt. But but then so
the result there is no, they're not you know, weren't
good enough and so they just hit the point where
they said, look, we got no path forward and and this,
this is the only thing of true value we've got,
Jimmy Butler. And really, if you think about it, if
you know, if you don't over react to it. You
heard all those names going up to the deadline, UH
(01:00:24):
draft deadline about trades, Porzingez and Paul George LaMarcus Aldre's
big names. Well, you know what which one did? Who
got a lot to be picked for any of them?
The bull The Bulls are the only one that got
to pick, and only be cause and saying strictly, but
the coach, the GM of that team was previously coached
Jimmy Butler and really knew him and liked him. So
(01:00:47):
you know, at that at that point, I'm not sure
what else the Bulls could have or should have done.
What what what becomes of Dwyane Wade? He UH is
happily going to be cashing those checks ifice a month
that ate up to twenty four million dollars and Dwayne
is going to be smiling about that. And there's no
offense to Dwyane Wade because that that's exactly what he
(01:01:10):
signed up for. Miami said to him. You know what,
we don't think you're that good anymore. We're not gonna
pay you. You won three titles here for us. You
change the course of the franchise. You're the face of
the franchise, and you know what, we don't think you're
worth that money. So his own team, who knew him best,
didn't want to pay him to the extent the Bulls
took a shot, you know, and it was part. It
(01:01:31):
was a great deal to accommodate Jimmy. Jimmy said, look,
because they were ready to do this last year. And
Jimmy said to them, look, you know, you guys are
upset with Derek when he didn't want to recruit. I
will recruit, you know, I will go out. I will
get you somebody. Dwyane Wade, you know, he'd just come
off averaging twenty something in the playoffs Superstar, you know, guy,
big name Marquette hold that. And they said, okay, all right,
(01:01:55):
you right, and so we'll take one more shot at it.
And it didn't work, and so done do I don't
come back. You'll finish out this, you know, we'll finish out.
And I think and then come February, you know, maybe
a biot at that point, you know, maybe go play
with Lebron or something. But he's on board for the
money and I don't blame him. I don't blame him
at all. Sam Smith got Bulls dot com, or of
(01:02:16):
course you can follow him on Twitter at sam Smith Hoops.
Sam thanks for catching up with us and giving us
your thoughts on what's going on in Chicago. Okay, I
got a guy. I got a guy, Mark Medina in
l a covering the Lakers beat. Fall him on Twitter
at Mark G because he's a G at Matt Mark
(01:02:36):
g underscore Medina. Um, let's start with the fact that
they did, in fact go Alonzo Ball on the record.
I know you're on the beat and it's hard on
the record. Do you think that was the right call?
I think that was the right call. I mean, certainly
there's question marks with all these guys, but when you
look at the total body of work, with all the
Lakers needs that they have with this rebuilding project, he
(01:02:59):
kind of checks most of the boxes off. You know,
they already lost a point guard with the D'Angel Russell trades.
They needed someone doing that. They liked his qualities more
than d' angel in terms of his passing mentality, his
leadership qualities, and you know, you can't discount just the
marketing aspect, the hometown connection, the fact that you know
(01:03:19):
he went to use c O A and Chino Hills,
and you know his father's outspoken. But uh, you know,
I know that that creates some potential distractions, but I
think the Lakers will be able to kind of corral
that so they get kind of the benefits from him,
uh you know, being a self promoter, but without the
distractions that might come with it. Yeah, I think it's interesting.
What about the rest of the one that Kuzma understand
(01:03:41):
because he can really shoot h the Josh Hart thing,
I'm like, I know that that Luke has told people
I want winners and I want I want greater toughness.
But is I mean, couldn't they have gotten Josh Hard
in the second round? They could have. I mean, they
had the forty second pick. Um you know, from understanding,
I think they were worried that he would be selected
(01:04:03):
earlier before that. And when you look at this young team,
there's a lot of guys who are one and Dunn's
were We've been there two years, so they still wanted
to have some young pieces that were relatively more mature.
So I think the fact that he went four years
of Illanouva, I mean, he had a pretty good track
record in terms of helping them win a title. Uh,
(01:04:23):
being considered a two way player. I think that really
kind of helped help the scale as far as them
selecting him at number thirty. Okay, they didn't get Paul
George as of yet, and the rumors continue to heat
up that Paul George could be headed to Boston. Are
these just rumors to to re engage with the Lakers
or is is Paul George in fact not going to
be a Laker. I don't think you ever rule anything out,
(01:04:46):
but you know, my sense is that the Lakers were
going to get a deal. It was going to be
before the draft because in a way, you know, that's
the most currency that they have and negotiating a deal,
the fact that they can give draft boocks. And you know,
I don't think that you necessarily rule out that the
Lakers won't continue to try, but now they're having to
present specific players where before you know, the PEO could
(01:05:08):
be for Indiana, then hey, we have these picks, we
can use them as we see fit and basically the
way I was told. You know, the Lakers presented either
Joyous Randall or George Clarkson in that pick that they had.
They wanted more, but you know, the Lakers don't want
to give up the number didn't want to give up
the number two pick, and they don't want to give
(01:05:29):
up brandon ingra up. So never say never. But I
think Boston has more leverage because they have more to offer.
Um okay, so um if if you don't end up
getting Paul George, what becomes the plan? Magic has said
and and others have said, Hey, we're trying to get
two free agents. Well they're still just gonna wait until
(01:05:50):
next year or do they are there some veterans out
there they're gonna go after this year? Well, I think
the keyword that Rob Polinkas said his press conference last
night was how he viewed cap space. He said it
was sacred. And so I think the plan is that
they're going to try to get some decent guys that
filled positional needs, maybe add some veterans to complement the
(01:06:13):
young core, but no game changers or anything like that.
I think they're keeping their eyes that Onen and case
George is available as a free agent, then in case
Lebron James, again in case Russell Westbrook. And what's interesting,
I think that this hearkens a reminder back a few
years ago where the Lakers had a similar strategy, where
(01:06:33):
it was, Hey, assigning guys to one year contracts. Have
you know that flexibility to go after the Lebron James
is Carmelo Anthony's. But it is a tad different because
before you had all these expiring contracts, you had an
aging and hurt Kobe Bryant. And here you know, you
still have an unproven roster, but you at least have
(01:06:55):
some semblance of a nuquus with some young players. So
I think, relatively speaking, will be in a much better
striking position. But that all depends, Frank, obviously, how the
team develops this upcoming season. Luke Walen and the players
they got no question. Mark Medina, who covers the Lakers
beat for the l A Dally News Mark, thanks so
(01:07:16):
much for joining us and being our guy covering the
the Laker Blue and Gold. Hey, Doug, always love being
on your show. Thanks for having a right So you
needed a guy, we got you a guy. Drew Stanton
had some interesting thoughts on the National Football League and
the quarterback problem that the long time backup perceives in
(01:07:38):
the league. I'll share with you his thoughts, give you
my own after we find out what's trending. Cardinals backup
quarterback Drew Stanton came into the league as a second
round draft pick of the Lions. Of course, Drew Stanton,
one of those Michigan State products, came in two thousand
and seven. He's been one of those consonant backup guys,
right like, oh, I remember Drew stan when he was
(01:07:59):
in Detroit. I remember you Dan when he was an indie. UM.
And what's what's fascinating is his thoughts on the development
or lack of ability to develop quarterbacks. Quote, it's so
hard to develop as a quarterback in the league nowadays.
And so Drew Stanton said to Josh wine Fuss, he said,
the NFL unfortunately is headed down a bad trend. When
(01:08:20):
I first got in the league, you can be an
inactive third on game day like I was when I
was younger. The transition that transitioned into now they're supposed
to say spots and get guys in the practice squad.
Um Bruce Arians made it made it clear in Arizona
(01:08:41):
when discussing the Cardinal's backups, they remember they have not
just standing, they have blame Gabett and Trevor Knight. Trevor
Knight straight out of Oklahoma, probably a practice squad guy.
Aaron said they'll be keeping a third quarterback on the
active roster when it comes down to whether or not
he's the best player regardless of position, and the fact
that quarterbacks don't play special teams, uh play, he's a
role in that decision. Even if the league were to
(01:09:02):
revert to the old inactive arrangement, there would still be
limits to how much work quarterbacks can do with a
depth chart with teams. In other words, there's no minor
league for the National Football League. And what Stans saying
is like, look, because of the fifty three, you don't
and you can't have a guy inactive. Uh this and
(01:09:22):
like coaches are just like, look, I need Have you
ever go to an NFL game? And this is interesting? Ramos,
did you go to an NFL game last year with
the Rams back of town? I did. I went to
the game against San Francisco at the Coliseum. Okay, Um, Ryan,
did you go have you gone to a Rams game.
I have not. I'm on the train of I didn't
(01:09:42):
grow up a Rams fan. So I'm more interested in
going to the Charger game at uh stub Hub Center
because I think that's going to be interesting and that's
great waiting for the new stadium. I have some I have.
I have a couple of close friends in that Charge organization.
I'm a Charger fan. I'm fired up. I'm really really
fired up about um about going to see them in
such like a tight environment, right like thirty seats, some
(01:10:04):
good boxes like that sounds like would be a good time.
But one of the things that jumps out to you, Ramas,
I don't know if you noticed this, how few players
there are on NFL sidelines, right Like when you go
to a college football game, you ever gotten caught in
one of those deals to where they have double up numbers,
right like wait, wait, there's wait, there's wait, there's two
(01:10:25):
guys wearing the same number, and like they have so
many guys that they actually double up numbers. Well, in
the NFL you have fifty three, but you really only
have by I think like forty six active And you
know now you kind of start to break it down
and you're like, all right, well you got the backup
quarterback doesn't play. That takes. He's active, but he's not
(01:10:45):
really active unless he's only active unless, right, unless something
really bad goes happens. You have a long snapper, that's so,
that's a guy. You have a kicker, you have a punter.
Sometimes it's one of the same. Most times a kicker
and a pun are like you start to do the
numbers now, and there's not a lot of guys when
there's eleven on the field, there's not a lot of
(01:11:05):
guys standing around the sidelines. Just not. And it's among
the problems is and I don't know what being active
really means. They cut down by cutting down practice time.
It's it's one of those laws. You have a lot
of unintended consequences. It's one of my favorite things. The
law of unintended conse the um trying to think, Um,
(01:11:32):
how would you describe the law of unintended This? This
is how I would describe it. Okay, Unintended consequences are
outcomes that are not ones foreseen or intended by purposeful action.
Let may give the example in the NFL is this
they've cut down practice time substantially now part of why
they did it. They did it there in the last
(01:11:53):
copective of art agreement. They did it because the players
felt like it was a waste of time the players felt.
But really they did it because they're just trying to
protect themselves from more lawsuits over concussions, right and lawsuits
over injuries. They can't get guys hurt like we can't.
But the problem, the unintended consequences of having no no
two days essentially in um in training camp and having
(01:12:18):
such limited time in actual practice during the season is
one The offensive line play is usually subpart rule in
the year and two backup quarterbacks never get a chance
to take snaps, Like, you don't have that much time
you gotta put in the game plan. Also, you have
more Thursday night games, which means more short weeks. All
you got time to do is get your starter ready
(01:12:39):
and get your backup a couple of reps and that's
about it. And Stanton's like, look, you can't develop because
these guys aren't dressing. They're not getting time in practice,
so you don't have a next wave up quarterback. You
don't have quality backups or quality third stringers that are
Gonn developed quality backups to be quality starters. Are coming
(01:13:00):
up next. What did the Fox say? Rob Olinka, general manager,
former agent general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers compared
Alonzo Ball to one of the all time greats in sports?
How reasonable is the comparison? You'll find out what the
fox said upcoming next. But first, Uh, you got a

Getting you ready for a great weekend. Your headed to

somewhere up state and whatever state you live in. Just
make it safe and have a great time. Man. Summer
the summer I played, I took a red eye home.
(01:15:14):
Guys and I was playing baseball with my son and
his buddy, and as I slicked him and said, hey,
no more school, He's like, yeah, I go no more school.
It's like yeah. It just kind of like energized him.
Right Like summers here, so enjoy I mean, think think
back to when you're a kid. You remember when it
was summer and everybody's got some story of it of something.
(01:15:35):
I remember our first day of summer. I was in
fifth grade. I was raising my bike with no shirt on,
and of course we hit some gravel patch and I've
did a face plan on some gravel and then my buddies,
you know, sprayed me down with some hydrogen peroxyde and
I was screaming, you know, but at least I didn't
have to go to school the next day. Every day, uh,
(01:15:57):
I try and play you a portion of something one
of our other outstanding shows here on Fox Sports Radio.
I actually popped on m clay Travis. I landed early
in the morning, popped down m clay from Clay to
the Undisputed, from the Undisputed, Undisputed to Dan Patrick, from
Dan Patrick to Colin Calherd to me too, Rich eyes
(01:16:17):
In to Steve Gorman. You name it. Uh, we have
great shows. Colin Coward had Rob Polink on it's part
of a pushing the show we call and now Rob
Polinka is a little bit. He's kind of overstated. He
he says things in incredibly glowing terms. Take a listen though,
(01:16:38):
to what he said about his number two pick overall,
the Lakers first pick in this year's NBA draft, A
Lonzo Ball. Watching a Lonzo Ball in a one on
zero workout would be like, you know, looking at Van
Go paintings, where all he could do as a mental
he has this transcendent gift to see the floor and
pass and put the ball on a I'm like, you know,
(01:17:00):
Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady and quarterbacks that like that
just come to mind where they you can just see
a gift that they do things that other players can't do.
And we just feel like a talent like that is
just something that maybe you see every ten years in
the draft, and that's why we were so attracted to
him him becoming a part of the Lakers and really
help with us transform the way we play. I actually
(01:17:23):
agree with both parts. They're right, it's really hard to
evaluate Lonzo Ball on a one on none workout. But
Plinko would also, if he was being honest, would tell
you he wasn't great in the one on none workout
in comparison to what they assumed Lonzo Ball would be
in terms of conditioning and skill and athleticism. But I
(01:17:45):
would also agree, like look, end of the day, he
has a skill that very few others have. You can
find the players that can shoot and score, you can
find the players that can defend the uh. The ability
to create shots for others is one thing. The develop
ability to deliver a pass not just on the money,
but also on time and in rhythm is a skill,
(01:18:07):
is a gift, and I actually believe it's God given
and I think that a Lonzo has it. So I'm
I'm absolutely uh, absolutely fascinated by that, fascinated by that,
and it interested to see exactly what happens when he
(01:18:29):
gets into an NBA game. Is he able to create
shots for himself? Is he able to deliver the basketball?
Because I think the big fear with the Lakers is
we're not doubting his ability to school to pass, it's
can he get by his man? So that help has
to come so that he can then set up his teammates.
I mentioned that the LaVar Ball story while Clay Travis
(01:18:51):
has set it up several times and he's like, look,
at least LaVar Ball is not just there. He's an
engaged parent. Now, look he's a hell copter parent. So
while we can criticize some or or maybe point out
that LaVar a look, LaVar is still married. There's still
the Balls are still married, and LaVar are there worst
(01:19:13):
things in the world and caring too much about your son,
believing too much in your son. But one of the
things that LaVar Ball story did was it it coverage
stories like Caleb Swanigan's story. Swanagan, of course homeless early
on his life um morbidly obese, got into shape and
didn't just make himself into a first team All American,
he made himself into a Portland Trailblazer in the first
(01:19:35):
round draft pick. The journey has taken Swanagan to the NBA,
and we'll catch up with BIGGYA Swann again. He's gonna
join us, get his sense of where he is, where
he expects to be in the NBA, and has he
caught his breath and realized all he's accomplished. That's Upcoming
next is the Doug Gotlip Show only on Fox Sports Radio.
(01:19:59):
What APPENDU Got? The Show Fox Sports Radio getting you
ready for a great, great weekend. Big Three gets in
away this weekend. You'll see it live on Fox Sports
One on Monday Night. That's the best hoop that will
have for you. Now the NBA Draft is completed, We're
about a week away from free agency and we'll find
(01:20:20):
out where some of the high price free agent on
a huge year in free agency, but Gordon Hayward, some
people leave based upon what the Miami Heat did last night,
that Gordon Hayward could be on his way to the Heat.
On the way to the Heat, man, there's a lot
to get to. Uh. Some big Major League Baseball series
this weekend. Rangers, who have been a little bit disappointing
(01:20:44):
so far this year. You Darvish on the Hill against
the Yankees, the Bronx Bombers, of course, Aaron Judge the Nats,
and Bryce Harper finally living up to their expectations. They're
billing Steven Strasbourg on the on the Hump tonight. But
we continued to react to last night's NBA Draft. The
(01:21:07):
news out of the draft was very very simple. The
Chicago Bulls have decided they've had enough of this current
run and they're gonna start over. And it if it's
one of these, it all depends, right Like if you
said and look with Sam Smith from Chicago said, Hey,
(01:21:28):
the only guy of the of the big name players
to be traded they were supposed to be be traded was
the Bulls. And the Bulls got a lottery pick. Like, okay,
let's not be disingenuous about it. They moved up from
sixteen to seven, so they moved up nine spots. They
did get the seventh pick in the draft. They took
Lowry Marketing, who I didn't think was gonna go in
the top eight. But still uh. They end up getting
a top seven pick, and they got two players. Zach
(01:21:51):
Lavine is coming off in a c L but he
can score. Not sure what his position is in the NBA.
And then Chris Don who had a disappointing See he's
been playing for Tom Thibodeau, who doesn't like young players.
On the other hand, Done who's done is not that
young three years old in the second year in comparison
to other second year players in the NBA, only being
(01:22:13):
nineteen or twenty years old. It all depends on if
one of those two levine or done our starters. Like,
if you can get two starters for one, then it's
a good deal. But if you end up with you know,
two or three rotation players for Jimmy Butler, well then
(01:22:36):
it's a terrible trade. There there's nothing kind of else
to it. And I love the idea that well we
we we got the we got a lottery pick that
we wanted. Like all that sounds good, but sometimes there's
just a limited scope by which people look at Like
I don't know what Houston would have traded, but Houston's
in the market for another star player. Did you call Houston?
(01:22:59):
Did Paxson do his? Uh? You know. It's interesting though.
We talked about Jimmy Butler, and I do think that
he has a Rabbi in the room. He has somebody
who believes in him, that's seen him play at his best,
and he can now be a preacher of the Thibodeau
Gospel inside the Timberwolves locker room. Like that all makes sense.
(01:23:20):
But what's happened to Phil Jackson is Frank, what happened
to Jimmy Butler last year in Chicago? I talked about
this all the time. It's called the Peter principle music.
Do you remember what the Peter principle was? The music
on the phone? Do you remember what the Peter principles ramos? Yeah,
(01:23:41):
that you uh, that you like are not able to
go up higher because you're you're not meant to be there,
Like it's something something concept and management. Okay, that that basically,
you're promoted above your aptitude. All right, you're promoted above
(01:24:01):
your actual aptitude. And I think that happened in Chicago,
Jimmy Butler. It feels like that might have happened with
It feels like that might have happened with Phil Jackson
frankly in New York. We'll get to that in a moment.
Let's some Let's welcome in one of the newest members
of the NBA and a guy who was selected, who
(01:24:23):
is selected by the Portland Trailblazers, Big eastwann again, Caleb
Swannagan joins us on the Doug Gotlip Show. You what's up? Man? Hey?
I saw these pictures of you with your guys last night.
Are you below two thirty five? Now? No, I'm not
that little? How what what do you what do you
want you look? I mean, you look fit, you don't
look like you've lost weight, you look thin, Like what
(01:24:45):
do you weigh right now? So? Um, look, I think
your your journey has been well documented and you've let
people in it at various times to see it actually
culminate with being a first round trave pick something you
thought about doing last year and they pulled your name
out to to make it work and to get in
the NBA. What's the feeling like now? Definitely is amazing.
(01:25:09):
Right now, It's just it's really surreally, you know, being
around with people right now and going out there moving
and I can finally start putting plans with things and
that's just really exciting. Okay, So um, what they tell
you when they drafted you? What are their expectations. I
haven't talked to him. I haven't talked about that. I
go out there, um this weekend for pressconference and most
(01:25:30):
times let you enjoy them with your family because we
know it's a big moment a lot of people it is.
It is a big moment. Um. Uh. You know, obviously
people know about your story about how um you know
you had to leave your family in order to to
change your life and change everything about what you were doing.
Like this is a massive extended family to produe. Guys
(01:25:51):
put their arms around you. So when they say family,
like who does that? How do you? How do you
determine exactly what is your family? Biggie? The people out
there for me every day day out, that's what family
is to me. They care about you know, to tell
you the truth, and they keep you grounded. That's that's
what my definition of family is. You you came back
to school last year. You would have been drafted, but
(01:26:12):
you made a decision to come back to school, and
there's a lot of people like, well, you know, you
gotta come out while your stock is high. Of course,
you came back and dominated the big ted I point
out before you joined us twenty eight double doubles, you
had four games. Um, is there is there a lesson
to be learned from some of these freshmen who are
who were trying to figure out whether to come back
or not come back, because there's something that how did
(01:26:34):
you how did you not get caught up in so
many guys that you were contemporaries left after last year?
You came back to school and you didn't act like
you were a failure for not going. How did you
handle that mentally? My mom said, last year was a
playing hard every play, every single rip And uh, you
know guys that maybe considering and feel like any going
(01:26:55):
the hop But if you feel like a game can
improve or you can show something, it's good to go back.
But you're not working if you go from one year,
if you get worse after the year. He wasn't in
a jam as much as you should have been. So
if you're if you're working and comparing, you don't get
injured and to work on him and school is gonna
be a bad thing for you. What's the what's the lesson? Right?
Like now you're now when you go around the country
(01:27:17):
in the NBA, they're gonna say, well, that's that's the
biggest want again, who spent portions of time in in
a homeless shelter? Uh, that's biggest wanna gain? Who overcame
the tragic passing of his father, Who who made it
through the drugs and crime ridden areas, who overcame a
weight problem earlier? Like what's if? What's what's the lesson?
What's the what's the lesson that you want to teach
(01:27:38):
the young people? Now that you've truly succeeded. My biggest
thing is just, UM, when you see any things like
that as possible, and damn he plays hard. That's the
That's the only fact I want people when they leave
the gym anything like that, or you're just like he's
competing with everything, and then you live your life that way.
You just persist and you're consistent in carry way, everything
(01:27:58):
becomes a happy you start catting your way a way
and academically k that way with your family when it's
hard every day and it's and you play and you
hold yourself the expectation it makes you makes your line
up and everything else in your life. What's possible for
you in the league? What you I know, your focused person.
You have a vision. What's your vision ultimately of your
role in the NBA. My vision is I want to
(01:28:21):
be the best power for whatever. Um. Something I've always
told myself even when I was in eighth grade, and
something still told myself to today. UM. Not saying I
feel like I'm that now, but as with time, and
that's what I want to prove when I retire. I'm
having my retirements, be want to be able to go
out and say I'm arguably one of the best part
for is that played in the the NBA. You want to
shout a Draymond arguably one of the big men that
(01:28:43):
played the NBA. Okay, yeah, I mean you want like
like you want to shout at you know you're gonna
get a bunch of games with Draymond now playing out West.
Oh yeah, Draymond is a good dude. Michigan State. Um,
I like to talk, I like to target. I mean,
I'm excited for this Kid's gonna be a lot of
fun setting all those ball screens Damian Lillard and c
J McCullum, Like, that's gotta, that's gotta just completely and
(01:29:05):
totally energize you. Did you know Portland? Because remember Portland,
they kind of consolidated their picks. Did you know before
they took you that they were gonna take you? Um? No,
then no, no teams really show you their hands. They
all keep them needing no basis with the no organizations
as well. I noticed is this process. So I didn't
find out until you know, wheneveryone else found out. For
(01:29:25):
the most part, the biggest want to get joining us
on the Doug Gottlib Show here on on Fox Sports Radio.
Um I mentioned how how then you look like is
there a is this? Is this the ideal playing weight? Like,
how do you how do you determine what you want
to plan? And and look once you get in the league,
it's gonna be hard actually to keep on weight. How
do you determine what the ideal weight is for you?
(01:29:48):
Right around the area I am, Now that's the way
I can play, act consistently and just keeping well and
doing things like that. And I mean from my first time.
So I can't really tell you what to do because
I haven't done it yet. I gotta listen and figure
that out this coming bolcoming year. Who's the guy who
was drafted last night? You're like, Oh, I like him
that you did all these workouts, you know all these guys.
(01:30:09):
Who's who's the guy who you saw a draft? You like?
I like him a lot. He's he's gonna be good there, Oh,
Donan Mitchell is gonna be good for Utah. He's he's
a great player. Really is silent through so much him,
I mean he saw it A character. Guy like him
a lot. Yeah. Kars Ferguson going okay, see another shooter
and as long and a guy who didn't get a sow.
(01:30:31):
Whole bunch of people don't know about him. Well they
know about him, but they don't know abou him like
the last few years, because he's been gone. I like
him for there too, you know what, I I agree with.
I like your analysis. I like Mitchell more than Monk
for for Charlotte, like I understand that Monk had big,
bigger outbursts. I think. I just think Donovan is a
better player. And I agree with you with Ferguson because
they need a three in d guy and he got
(01:30:53):
a chance to play professional basketball. Uh well, so listen, big,
you don't take my job yet, play good ten fifteen
years in the league and then come aboard as a
basketball analyst the meantime. Congratulations man. I know it's been
a long road, and I know everybody is throwing their
love to you, but those of us who watch you
play and appreciate your improvement are really blown away. And hope,
hope you have an incredible career in Portland. Thank you.
(01:31:16):
All right, that's a biggie Schwannagan who three our third
try time was in fact a charm. Did we figure
out what happened? Their music? I can hear everybody around
him except Caleb Swanagan. Well, I don't have an official answer.
My guess this is just my guess is when I
say hang on for just one second, I'm gonna put
(01:31:38):
you on with Doug. He took the phone away from
his ear both times. That's my only guest because as
you said, we could clearly hear that there was background
noise there. It wasn't as if the phone line dropped.
So that's my only assumption in the matter. I didn't
do a lot of investigating because I was just worried
about getting him back onto the show. He was just
(01:31:58):
trying to get him back. Okay, Um, maybe you're being
he was taking you to literally hang on for Doug
and then he that's I mean, I don't otherwise, I
don't know why he wouldn't have been able to hear us,
because it's not like we did anything different the third
time when he finally we finally got him on. All right,
(01:32:19):
We're gonna check in with with Minnesota. The Twin Cities
host the Super Bowl next year. And you know, one
of the cool things when you go to the Super
Bowl is usually the NBA NBA team has remember this year,
that Houston had a couple of hometown games. Uh, people
are gonna be excited about the Timberowls, Carl Town's Andrew Wiggins.
And now you've got Jimmy Butler as well. What happens
(01:32:41):
with Ricky Rubio? Will there be a veteran edition? How
much can Butler bring to the table. We got a
guy in Minnesota. Well, we'll find out what's reasonable expectations
for the Minnesota Timberwolves. We'll get to that upcoming next.
But first one to tell you about something that's going
(01:33:01):
to change your grilling game, right, like when there's a
When you're a guy, there's certain things you've got to
have game with. And once you're married, you don't have
to have game with your wife. She knows you don't
have game, but you better have game on the grill.
You better be able to to go out there and
have people over and make something that guys like. Man,
that's pretty good. But a good craftsman is only as

(01:34:32):
getting ready for a great weekend, but trying to figure
out what that'll happen last night? Where like Jimmy Butler's
now a Minnesota timber Bowl. That that that's awesome that's right,
I got I got it. Okay, okay, uh, And you
know what to dig in on how this all took
place and what it all means for the Timberwolves and
are they done making moves? I got a guy in
(01:34:55):
the Twin Cities. We don't know everything, but we know
people that know. You want to know, you know, sounds
like you need a guy. I got a guy. Doug
Gotlin Show, Fox Sports Radio. John Krasinski joins us Timberwolves
(01:35:22):
beat writer and a good one, John, Did you know
this movie was coming? Well? I had a really good
feeling during the run up to the draft, maybe the
last hour or so, that they were making great progress
on a deal. I had reported earlier in the week
that last year they were incredibly close to a deal
(01:35:43):
that would have sent Levine and Done to the Bulls
for h for Jimmy Butler and and it just didn't
quite get finished. So I knew the framework was there
and it would have just taken a little bit of
a sweetener, likely this time around. And it turns out
that the two picks, the picks swap what was all
that mattered to get the deal done? And so you
(01:36:05):
know what these things you're always surprised when it finally
does get completed. But you could feel in the building
and talking to people behind the scenes that they felt
pretty confident as the draft approach that they thought that
Tims was going to get his guy. So TIBs gets
his guy. And what I said, um was like, look this,
this gives you the Rabbi in the room. On on
(01:36:27):
both hands, Tom Thibodeau can bring in Jimmy Butler. He
knows how to coach Butler, he can swear by Butler. Meanwhile,
Butler can be kind of the spokesperson for why Tips
is right, because because the Tips thing didn't work, it
wasn't smooth, They didn't become some defensive juggernaut the way
that people thought he could make this young team into.
So both have a supporter in the other and they
(01:36:49):
can kind of work as one and and and then frankly,
Jimmy Butler's probably better off as a second or third
weapon offensively than he is as the go to guy.
It all works in that's and doesn't. Yeah, it really does.
It's it's the exact player that Tom needed to bring
in here to Minnesota because, let's face it, Doug, I mean,
his first season in Minnesota was a disappointment. They only
(01:37:12):
one two more games than the year before, and as
you said, from start to finish last year, they did
not show the defensive improvement that you expected out of
a Tom Thibodeaux coach team, especially with guys who are
very talented. I mean Andrew Wiggins and Karl Anthony Towns,
and Ricky Rubio is a good defender, and and Gordie Jang.
I mean, they have guys that are capable of doing it,
(01:37:34):
and for whatever reason, just something was getting lost in
translation or not getting through, or these guys were too young,
or a multitude of reasons that it wasn't happening. And
so Tibbs needs somebody of veteran with uh incredible credibility,
which Jimmy Butler has with all of his All Star
(01:37:56):
appearances and his All Nbas and and things like that,
to come in here. And when things aren't getting through
to the players from the coach, Jimmy can pull them
aside and either have a stern talking with them or
or put his arm around them and and try and
explain things in a way that will resonate. And so
(01:38:16):
um I think from that standpoint, it's hard to find
a better fit for Tips and for what he needed
because they do have a history together. Jimmy Butler loves
Uh and respects Tom siboda a lot. And what I've
been told is, you know, Tom Thibodeau could be coaching
the team in Winnipeg coming off a ten game season,
a ten win season, and Jimmy would have come and
(01:38:38):
played for him. So that's how much he's looking forward
to it. He has an ally now in in Tom Sibodeaux,
and he feels like Tom Thibodeau was an ally of
his as well, And so that's why there's so much
optimism that this is going to work out all right.
What about Ricky Rubio? They thought about trading him at
the trade trade deadline, has been talking of trading him
in this offseason. Where are we with with their starting
(01:38:59):
point guard? That's the biggest question right now, Doug, is
what they do here now? From what I'm told, Uh,
I still think there's a chance that he sticks around.
They're certainly fielding calls, they're looking at options. But if
they do trade Ricky Rubio, they need a veteran point
guard to come in, whether it is in a trade
(01:39:20):
or whether you get him in free agency and just uh,
it's going to be interesting to see what their options are.
From a trade standpoint. It's hard to find a dance
partner that would bring back a starting point guard that
better and cheaper than Ricky Rubio and and so the
the issue is, right now, they have about eight million
dollars to spend. They still have a lot of needs
they have to go get. They need a power forward,
(01:39:42):
They need more and more and more and more shooting
uh to to surround uh these guys with. And so um,
if you're gonna go try and sign a Drew Holiday,
a George Hill even maybe even a Jeff Tiguan free agency,
you're probably gonna end up paying more money than you
would to Ricky Rubio and and so if if you're
trying to be economical and the way you distribute those
(01:40:04):
dollars with with all the bodies they need to to
uh to to bring in, it might be difficult to
make that that kind of a move. I wouldn't be
surprised if if they do end up trading Ricky and
going somewhere else. But if they end up doing it Doug,
they have to have plan be locked and loaded or
else they run the risk of really taking a backwards step. Man,
(01:40:28):
It's gonna be fascinating to see exactly what what do
they do. John Krasinski joining us covering the Minnesota Timberwowolves. John,
thanks so much for being our guy in the Twin Cities.
Is suddenly now we're all interested in the Wolves. Appreciate it,
you bet dog Any time, mam, how close was Jimmy
Butler to becoming a Celtic? Find out after we find
(01:40:50):
out what's trending. Doug Gottlives Show, Fox Sports Radio. M
m m mmmm. We gotta get you as updated as
many stories as possible. You know, like a lot of
you guys just hopping in your car listen to the
d G Show. You guys have followed me for last
(01:41:12):
ten years on now our third network, and one of
the things I always like to bring to you is
you're getting ready for Friday. You want to know everything
that's going on in sports. Let's get to it with
the press, the press, Dan Buyer, what do you have
for me? Huff? The heels of the NBA Draft, Vegas
is now weighing in on who's gonna be the NBA
(01:41:35):
rookie of the year. The odds on favorite right now,
Lakers point guard Alonzo Ball a five to two favorite
according to Bovada. Ben Simmons, last year's number one pick
who would be eligible for Rookie of the Year next season,
is at three to one, while his sixer teammate Marquel
Folks right now a five to one shot to be
named the NBA's Rookie of the Year. So I think
(01:41:55):
they believe that Simmons and Folks will split votes, right
That's what they think. I would Yeah, I would say so.
And a lot of it is about opportunity, and right now,
with no other point guard, the Lakers are gonna give
every opportunity. I think it's gonna be Ben Simmons. If
I had to be a betting maam um, Ben Simmons,
by my instormation, was a more surefire prospect. He has
(01:42:17):
his struggles with shooting as well, but he is a
stat packer. He has a little Lebron, little magic, a
little lamar Odom to his game. Ben Simmons would be
my That would be my choice. Now. If there is
a guy I don't know, I'm putting you on the spot.
Malcolm Broggs into the Bucks was the second round pick
last year could be the rookie of the year coming
up on Monday Night. Is there a late first rounder
or second round guy that you think could uh maybe
(01:42:39):
have an impact that put himself into the conversation. Uh? Well,
obviously the Broadden thing, the Broaden thing first surprised people.
But also remember part of it was so many of
those two draft picks last year, much like the draft
picks this year, they're just not ready and they're just
not not ready and beads in the conversation. And he
played thirty one games, you know, like like like he
was talking to even play half a season, and people
(01:43:01):
are saying, oh, rookie of the year, that's maybe how
bad it is. Yeah, I would say if I if
I had to pick one that was, would you say
you said late first Yeah? Yeah. Is there somebody just
maybe that it was a good fit on a team,
that you saw that maybe you could do something. Well,
there's there's a couple there that I thought were I
thought were really interesting. Um the first one, the first
(01:43:25):
one was was Derek White with who ends up going
to the San Antonio Spurs And and my thinking behind
it is that I don't know if de jon Ty
Murray is their starting point guard Derek White, you know
a Division two player put up big numbers, then goes
transfers up to Colorado Division one and he plays tremendous
(01:43:46):
And like they don't have Tony Parker, that's an opportunity
for him to come in and play and to score. Um,
I know, I put you on the spot. Dwayne Bacon
could get some run in New Orleans. Dwayne Bacon is
a guy that can put up numbers in a hurry.
And again my thinking behind is you already have the
two great big guys inside. Maybe Baking get some run
(01:44:09):
on the perimeter. He's a really, really good score from
the wing. Those will be the only guys you mentioned
later in the first and in the second that I
would think of those beat Those be my guys. Celtics
President Danny Ames didn't make a trade yesterday, but did
weigh on the way in on a trade that was
made that sent Jimmy Butler from Chicago to Minnesota. Danny
aings earlier on not the eight point five of the
Sports Hub in Boston. In reality, we were never ever
(01:44:32):
close to trading the number three dead. That's Doug, that's
my bad. Here's Danny. Are you surprised by what Minnesota
had to give up for Butler? Will you ever close
on that one? Danny? No, not really. But I think
that Minnesota gave up a lot. Jimmy Butler is a
good player, and and all three of those guys. Zach
Laman has a very bright future, and Chris Tunn there's
(01:44:53):
a terrific talent. I think it's a it's a fair
and good trade for both well. I mean, like, look,
it all depends on whether I Chris Dunn can play,
all right. I like Kris Dunn coming out last year,
he really struggled this year. He'd never been a great shooter. Um,
and and he's older, and it's like at some point,
you know, Minnesota made the determination he can't play, so
(01:45:15):
uh um. I mean, look, the translation was they asked
for too much. We didn't believe that it was a
fair trade. If we did get we're not giving them
a very Bradley. We didn't want to give him Marcus
Smart and we might have given him Jaylen Brown, but
we weren't getting give them the number three pick. So
(01:45:36):
I also there's also some other stuff with the Celtics.
They love Jay Crowder. They really love his toughness and
when he brings to him. Jake Crowder and Jimmy Butler
were teammates Sat Marquette and they did not get along.
They continue to not get along. So that's why Jake
Crowder would have had to be traded. Like, wait, why
are we gonna trade Drake Crowder? We'd like him, he
doesn't make a lot of money. We can go out
and get Paul George. I think that's probably part of
the thinking with it. How about this from the NFL,
(01:45:58):
we're hearing from Derek Carr, the rate as quarterback, a
story that we've been following. Yesterday signed his extension with
the Raiders, making him the highest paid player in the
National Football League. Car today paying me a better compliment
than to tell me that you trust me with the
keys to this thing. For that, I'm grateful and I'm
honored to be the quarterback here of the team that
I love. You know, there was no doubt in my
mind that I don't want to play anywhere else. It's
(01:46:20):
more than just a team to me. It's more than
just that. It's family. Family. If you pay me twenty
five million dollars a year, I love like I love it,
Like what you're saying to me, you trust me, you
love me, and you know this is this is one
of those things that guys think women are the only
ones guilty of it, and we're just as guilty of it, right,
(01:46:43):
Like guys are guys like, hey, if you really love me,
pay me to pay me, pay me what I'm worth,
whereas women are like, look, if you really love me, like,
buy me those ear rings. I know I did. I
bought my wife's Marrie Sair Christmas. I was like, you
know what, You're right, Yeah, you're right. I can't say
I think the same thing at work. Why can't I
think the same thing at home? Moving on the Major
(01:47:03):
League Baseball After pulling out of a group that included
Derek Jeter, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush reportedly going to
join the group that includes Tom Glavin and Ted Rodney
that wants to buy the Marlin. So Jeter may really
be out of luck. As reports surface yesterday, he was
looking for more investors because his group didn't have enough
money to buy the team. Yeah. I mean that's one
of the things is I think people don't understand how
(01:47:27):
much money it actually takes the Frank McCords of the world,
where you can buy a team, buy a um, you
can buy an NBA team, or and or in that case,
Frank McCourt bought the l A Dodgers on credit. Like
those days are few and far. Those days are gone.
Now you have to have se of the cash and
the team's cost way more money. You're talking about over
(01:47:50):
a billion dollars. So as much as like Derek Jeter
is rich, we're talking about guys that are generationing wealthy
and he's just not. You gotta have a really good
group and they all have to have cash. Cash is king,
and Jeter didn't associate himself with people who had enough
of that cash. And Doug final one, this one from
the world of soccer. It sounds like Sarah Ramos wants
to play soccer this year. That means John Ramos now
(01:48:13):
has to take more courses so he could coach his
daughter in soccer. This just coming in our John Ramos
being reeled back in to the soccer coaching ranks. Ramos,
how how old is she? She will be? You fourteen
this year? Fourteen? And you've you've coached, you coached last year? Yes?
Are you good, and you're like the nicest guy ever.
(01:48:33):
You have to be the greatest coach ever. I'm I'm
a good coach. What was the record last year? That
was All Stars? That was different? Now you're facing the
best players around the whole area. Uh, the league was
a good good good? So you mean so you mean
the record wasn't good because you're too nice? Um, there
was other reasons why I don't want to get what
(01:48:56):
was the All Star record though? What was it? Just
and ten? Um? Like you didn't win any of them. No,
we were actually winning one game to a nil and
then they tied it and then beat us in like
over time. M. I can't wait to see you back
(01:49:16):
in the sidelines. Hey John John, press the button. Well, look,
we can finally found let me do worse than work
the board. That's that's the big thing. Ill br all week,
try try the veal fifteen year NBA veteran versus a
(01:49:41):
reporter one two, three, four, We declared Twitter war next
that's just information and war Zanowski. Blake Griffin has opted
out of his contract become a free agent, and the
l A Clippers that's not a surprise. And all these
guys except for Dwayne Wade opted out because Wayne Wade's
contract is twenty four million dollars getting twenty four million
(01:50:03):
on the street. So, uh, let the speculation begin, right,
could you sign and trade him? Would Blake Griffin consider
would he consider a sign and trade to go home
to Oklahoma City? Very close friends with Russell Westbrook. I
don't think so, but it's not out of the conversation,
right assigning trade with with Oklahoma City. Houston has openly
(01:50:28):
opined for Blake Griffin a chance to play with James Harden.
So now we get to the next and more interesting phase.
Of course, last year it was Kevin Durant. This year
you have several Clippers. You have Gordon Hayward. Paul George
is not a free agent, but because he's a free
(01:50:49):
agent next year, likely to be moved this year. It
continues to get interesting in the NBA continues to dominate
the headlines on a news dump Friday. Blake Griffin is
not compable news as he is he is essentially a
free agent. So hey, you know what I saw? One
two three four. I believe I have spotted a Twitter
(01:51:10):
a war one two three four, I declare a Twitter
four Darren Revelle, who covers sports business for ESPN, kind
of stepped in a little bit. He said, thirty years
ago today, one of the worst trades of all time.
SuperSonics trade the number five pick to the Bulls for
the number eight pick. What did the SuperSonics get? Return
Olden Polonies, who of course has joined us on the
(01:51:33):
Doug Gottlieb Show op tweets back at Darren. Hey, Darren,
I appreciate your thoughts, but I don't know who you are,
and I'm thankful my for my career and hope you
have a great NBA career. Wait, revel tweets back, very
well played. Didn't mean to suggest you were a bust,
which you weren't. Scotty became one, became fifty greatest Olden Polonies.
(01:51:56):
I know I wasn't a bust. I gave it my
all every night. It's good Scotty was a player. I'm
proud to be tied to him. Enjoy your day. This
nice guy twitter war crap is just that. Reveled Totally
back down, he went, He said, remember, the first tweet
is one of the worst trades of all time. No,
(01:52:19):
it's not. It's not in the conversation. It's not. It's
not even in the conversation of what happened between the
bust and Celtics and the Brooklyn Nets a couple of
years ago. PAULP. Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Jason Terry all passed
their prime, all only there for a year, all for
three first round picks and the rights to the right
(01:52:40):
to switch first round picks this year. Yeah, no, it's
not in the conversation. That's our Twitter war for the night.
All right, boys, I told you I saw Cars three.
The good thing like Ralmo S. Doyesn't have kids, my
my kids age, but Cars three more in line with
(01:53:01):
the Cars series as opposed to Cars To which is
like they try to do a Bond film, um and
they basically, you know, really tried to use made her
a whole bunch more music. You got volleyball going on
this weekend? What what kind of single man with girlfriend
or well, you know, what kind of non married activities
do you have this weekend? Yeah, playing in a beach
volleyball tournament tomorrow down to Manhattan Beach. Is Luke Walton
(01:53:25):
gonna play in that beach ball ball tournament? I hope
so so I can put him to shame. Put him
to shame. What about you, Ramos, You're coaching any girls
soccer poorly this weekend? I am not soccer poorly this weekend.
I kinda said, we're just gonna kind of relax, take
a show for this weekend, and and kind of taking
the raise from Southern California, Dan Bay, are you are
you going to overpay for a concert to which you
(01:53:46):
can barely see the act performing on stage. That's a
low blow, Doug, That's a low blow. I'll remember that
one though. That's uh. Next time you invite me. You
don't want to invite me to a concert, I'm not
gonna go to unless I have m v P caliber seating. Okay,
I wasn't gonna tell you what I was gonna do,
but now I don't know if I'm going to know.
I'll be Actually, I'll Manhattan Beach may be the place
to be. I'll be there. Tonight's for uh, because we're
(01:54:09):
meeting a couple for dinner. Couple's dinner. Now do you
know this couple or are you set up on a
couple's husband? This is an all Lisa deal. I met
them at our wedding so oh, that's it. That's awkward.
What do you wear to pretend like you don't know
me before we go to dinner? No, well, hold on,
this is very interesting stuff. I actually one of my
better friends, one of one of my closer friends in
(01:54:30):
southern California. We met on a husband's blind date, right
like the girls were friends and like, oh, well they'll
like each other. Let's go to have dinner. You're like, Hi,
I'm Doug. Hi I'm Matt. Let's be friends. Okay, so
what are you wearing to this? To this? Like, how
do you Well, that's part of the problem. I wanted
to wear a hat today because it's casual Friday, and
(01:54:52):
I was told no, not allowed to wear a hat.
But I didn't compromise by wearing shorts because it's so warm.
It's not what it's hot. Yeah, it's hot, it's it's
pretty hot. So I've just got the old probably something
you could wear in a golf course, polo shirt and
some shorts. What's this guy? Do you know? Have you
gotten the sky report? You get the sky report in
a round? No, I don't even know what my friends do.
(01:55:12):
To be honest, you know, like, I've had friends for
twenty years, and I have no idea what they do.
They've told me so, so I'm gonna be I'm gonna
be up a creek without a paddle tonight. But but
we'll be all right at Leasta. We'll be there rutting
shotgun and she could do a lot of the heavy lipsing.
It's one of the it's one of the awkward things
in now that you're a married couple. Me want your couple,
but the married couple of thing to where women are
friends and they're like, I gotta bring my husband along.
(01:55:35):
I'd really just like to have a drink with you
on a Friday night, but I'm Mary. Now it's like
I gotta bring him along. You have a husband, you
have one of those two good You don't want to
talk to him and I don't want to talk to him,
so uh. And at some point they'll both bring up sex,
we'll both roll our eyes, we'll all have wine, and
then we'll go home. Right, So that's kind of the
way it works. Welcome to it. Now, you're officially married,
(01:55:55):
like you thought you were officially married when you put
the ring on her finger a couple of weeks ago.
Once you go to the couple's blind husband date. Now
you're officially a husband. Now you know what you are?
Your eye Candy Dan, that's what you are. You are her,
You are her side piece. Yeah, that's that's exactly what
(01:56:16):
you are. Congratulations on you looking forward to that. But
the fact that she told you she couldn't wear a
hat also welcome to Mary. Like, I'm gonna wear this hat.
No you're not. No, I'm not. I'm not gonna wear that.
A new hat too. It was a really good what
kind of hat was it? I got it at the
US Open Wisconsin. Great conversation has Lisa, no shame right, Yes,
(01:56:39):
you are a Wisconsin ing, a proud one. Now listen,
if you have an old school Brewers hat and she
makes you take it off, that's grounds for divorce. New
Brewers having out so much the old school ones. Have
a great and safe weekend. Don't drink and drive. And yes,
we spent a day and a half talking about the
Minnesota Timberwolves.
