Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Boom Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from beautiful, charming City
of Angels. Hopefully you are well. We are. We're doing
great man, We're ready. We're what a week away from Christmas?
(00:22):
It's begin to look look one who we know? Great
stuff for you today, phenomenal show. Okay, So I've been
searching for an answer to a a a quandary, a
question I've had all football season long, right Like sometimes
(00:44):
oftentimes there are logical solutions as to what, logical reasons
as to why, Like like people will ask Deshaun Watson
before he tour is a c l like, well, why
didn't DeShawn Watson win the job? And why don't they
run that college offense they're running when he first came
to the Houston Texans. And my guests would be that
(01:04):
Bill O'Brien figured, one, you can get your star player hurt. Secondly, like,
look the offense that they've always run, that he's always
operated in, Bill O'Brien I'm talking about, was the one
they drafted Watson in. Anyone have to change. They wanted
Watson to evolve to that and he just wasn't ready.
(01:27):
By the time he was ready, he had some stunning success.
They scrapped their plan for the original offense. They try
to work it on the fly. He ultimately got hurt,
and now they're stuck with multiple offenses. If you will,
like there's there's usually logic and reason behind stuff. I
have questions. I try to figure out why right, Like
(01:51):
it's hard. People ask all the time, why don't they
simply give teams a bye before the Thursday night game?
That way, there's no complaining about a short week. The
problem is that some teams are locked into Thursday night games.
The Super Bowl team, super Bowl champion team usually plays
in the first Thursday night, and then you have the
three games on Thursday, which are the Thanksgiving games. That's
(02:14):
at least seven teams, if not eight, that are already
locked in, and so there's kind of a cosmic juggling
act between Thursday games and you have the Saturday games
late in the year. You've got all sorts of problems.
So I look at it and I'm like, there's gotta
be logic and reasoning behind a lot of stuff. And
(02:35):
I finally found the answer to why Pittsburgh in spite
of all of their talent, and they have an immense
amount of talent on that roster. Of course, that roster
is not as talented now because of injury. Antonio Brown
won't play the rest of the regular season. Ryan Shazier,
who did, who was at the game. It doesn't appear
(02:57):
to be mobile as of this point, so we don't
know if and when shas Here will ever return to
the National Football League. Even with that, you still have
Martavis Bryant, you still have Levian Bell, you still have
Ben Roethlisberger, you still have Mike Pouncey, David de castro Um,
you still have a ton of Juju. Smith schustro of
course is awesome on special teams as well as a
(03:20):
second or third wide receiver. Defensively, you still have t J. Watt,
you stuff Cam Hayward like. There's still a lot of
star players. So when you look at the Pittsburgh Steelers,
you remember they struggled with Cleveland week one. All Right,
it's early in the year. You lost to Chicago. Okay,
they had just gotten Levan Bell back and he still
(03:41):
not only had sixty one yards rushing, they lost to Jacksonville.
Turns out Jacksonville is pretty good, and though they went
on a winning streak where they won nine consecutive games,
they barely beat Green Bay without Aaron Rodgers. They barely
beat Indianapolis without Andrew Luck. They barely beat since Daddy
who stinks. They barely beat Baltimore and gave up thirty
(04:04):
eight points to Baltimore. And they lost to New England
Patriots in a game in which, frankly, I do believe
that that should have been a catch. It should have
been a touchdown as well, but the rules worked against them.
In spite of that, they had many other opportunities to
win that football game. And so the question becomes, how
can a team so talented and in many ways successful, Right,
(04:28):
they only have three losses on this entire season, They're
eleven and three. How can they not be better? How
can they not be dominant? Why are there not more
blowouts like the Tennessee game? I think we have our answer.
You ready for it? All right? Ben Roethlisberger was on
k d k A that's a local radio station. He
(04:49):
makes some weekly appearance, and he had this to say
about the end of the game. So I was going,
clock clock clock, Dart were getting set, and then it
came through my headset then don't clock it. Run a play,
Run a play. In that moment as I'm thinking of
my head, do I spike it doing not? I wish
I listen to my gut Now obviously, in hindsight, I'll
take the blame for the reception at the end of
the game. You know, I wish that I would have,
(05:10):
you know, maybe mentioned that to coach, said, hey, there's
nothing got brown up. You know, hindsight on a lot
of situations here at the end, I wished to whatever.
I wish it would have called two players. I wish
you would have had too ready to go. Yeah, that
that did not sound like being personally accountable, did it?
Like he just kind of threw in, like, Look, I'll
take blame for the exception. That one's totally on me,
But I wish these guys had listened to me, because
(05:32):
my idea was better. All right, So let's listen tow
to the head coach Mike Tomlin, who's on the same
show earlier today, excuse me, at press conference earlier today,
and he had this statement about the exact same situation.
There's no script for those moments. There's always latitude, professional lattitude,
particularly that goes with being a veteran quarterback. In those circumstances,
(05:54):
he is on the field, he is inside the helmet
in on the field with those guys. He has a
feel of what's transpiring on the field that we on
the sideline and in the booth do not have. So
that's just normal operating procedure. We call plays all the
time that he may change it the line of scrimmage
based on game circumstances or or or what he sees.
What Mike Tomlin is saying is, look, Ben, if you
(06:17):
want to clock it, you could have clocked it. You're
Ben Effing Roethlisberger, even though I mean truth be told
a wide receiver through the in his first Super Bowl win,
he actually had the lowest pass rating of any quarterback
to every winn a Super Bowl. All that gets lost lost,
Nobody cares. Antoine Rendoel actually threw the best pass in
(06:40):
that Super Bowl for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Nonetheless, you won
two Super Bowls. You're the franchise quarterback. People were begging
you to not retire last year. You have ten plus
years of credibility. I'm not saying it's a good idea
to run your own stuff. But you've done it before,
(07:00):
so if you wanted to clock it, you could have
collocked it. If you want him to run a fade,
could run a fade. You wanted to run a stop
and go, They're gonna stop and go. If you want
to just throw it away because you didn't like the look,
you could have thrown away because he didn't like the look.
Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Tomlin are not on the same page.
Roethlisberger refuses to really take responsibility for the interception, and
(07:25):
Mike Tomlin, while taking while taking um credit for what
went wrong, has said like, look, it wouldn't change anything.
We're going for the wind. Yes, we want to do
We allow him professional latitude, Like I don't love when
(07:46):
businesses all kind of say the same thing about the
same situation. I don't love that, But you know what
it is. It shows a united front, right. It doesn't
matter if it's politics there's a big business, or if
it's even just kind of your family and how you
answer questions about, hey, where is uncle Jimmy, Uh, you
had to meet met beforehand, Uncle Jimmy spending time on
(08:07):
the farm. This Christmas, even though everybody knows Uncle Jimmy
is up serving five to ten. He had that stuff
on his computer, right, like you gotta prevent present a
united front, and the Pittsburgh Steers are clearly nine united front.
Ben Roethlisberg is saying, like, look, I'll admit it. I
threw the interception of the play. I didn't want to run.
I wish, I really really wish I would have done
(08:30):
what I wanted to do, but I did what they
want to do. And that's why I threw the interception
because I'm a team player. That's like the least team
player attitude in team player statement maybe of all time. Meanwhile,
Mike tom was like, he's Ben Roethlisberger. He don't want
to do it, he didn't have to do it. And
(08:54):
and then I looked at We've been trying to figure
out all year. I've been pointing this out all year
that I get how I'm supposed to like the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I'm supposed to like their ability to beat the New
England Patriots. I really am, but there's something about them
that's off. And I thought back to a statement that
Jimbo Fisher, who's now the head coach of Texas A
(09:15):
and M. He left Florida State, and you're like, why
did you leave Florida State, perennial power in the A
C C in the state of Florida to go to
Texas A and M. Who's really the second best, second
biggest name program in the state of Texas and have
to start all, why would you do that? Outside of money?
With huge money seventy five million over ten years. There
(09:36):
was this interesting SoundBite. I say this all the time
in coaching. You can have Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry Chuck
and oh, you can have the greatest coaches in the world.
But if your administration doesn't see things in the way
you see things allow you to do things that way,
nothing can be achieved. I mean, like, whether it's coaches
and administrators or coaches in front offices in the NFL,
whether it's players and their coaches, players and the front office,
(10:00):
if you if you're not all pulling in the same direction,
well then you're destined to never achieve your ultimate potential.
And that's what it feels like with this Steelers team.
The Steelers have been put together and they have plenty
of talent, maybe not without Chase here and not without
Antonio Brown. But they should be better, And the only
(10:21):
logical conclusion as to why they're not better is the
fact that their quarterback and their head coach aren't even
on the same page two days removed from their biggest
regular season game of the season. Of course, there's Todd Haley,
who Ben Roethlisberger has never been shy to say they
don't always see eye to eye with. Well, there's your answer.
(10:44):
I'll get the thoughts of Mark Schlaith as to what
went wrong there. He's a three time Super Bowl champion,
been a part of teams. Wonder if they're pulling all
in the same direction in with the Redskins when he
won or with the Denver Broncos when he won. How
would John Elway have handled that situation? And Mike Tomlin
also said he thinks they'll revisit the catch rule in
the off season. But if they didn't for Dez Bryant,
(11:07):
they didn't for Adam DeLand, why would they do it
for the Pittsburgh Steelers. We'll ask him that's next. But first,
all right, So I heard this crazy story over the
weekend about these twins. They grew up and found out
that their mom doesn't know who their real dad is.
So instead of going on like moriy right, uh, this
just crushes these guys, and they set out an admission
to find their dad. As it turns out, their mom
(11:28):
was a bit wild back in the day, and there
are many options for who their dad could be, talking
former NFL players, small town vats, big city cops, cooked out,
hedge fund guys, anyone seemingly could could have been their dad.
So they fly over the country and these dudes are
piecing together clues, meeting up with all sorts of crazy characters,
crashing funerals, picking up hitchhikers, getting shot at, getting to
(11:51):
all sorts of crazy situations just to find their old man.
And in the end it turns out to I'm not
telling you that and the movie I'm Not be Gonna
be spoiler. This is the plot of Father Figures. It's
a hilarious new comedy starring Owen Wilson and Ed Helms.
I know you have a bunch of other awesome people.
It's playing now. It's rated R. It's called Father Figures.

Hopefully you and yours having a great holiday season, all right,
(12:33):
So he played you audio of Ben Roethlisberger saying, hey,
uh yeah, I mean, look totally my bad throwing the interception,
but I didn't want to throw the football anyway. And
then he had Mike Tomly going like, look, it's Ben Roethlisberger,
Like he can do what he wants to do with
(12:54):
the line of scrimmage. He's done it before. If you
really want to clock it, clock the ball. If you
don't want to throw it, don't throw it, throw it away.
You don't want to run a slant, don't run a slant.
It's bringing Mark Shlareth. He would know who's to blame
and what his thoughts are on on what feels like
the Steelers not being on the same page. That's three
times Super Bowl champion. You hear him called games on Fox.
(13:14):
You see him throughout our Fox Sports One family of
TV shows. Stink when when when you hear Big Ben
saying like, look, my bad on the interception, but not
my bad on the play I didn't want to run.
How do you react? Yeah, I react very much like
Mike Tomlin reacted. Um, you're in charge, you're the quarterback.
(13:35):
We give you freedom of the line of scrimmage. How
many r p o s run pass options do you
have within our offense? Like, you're the you're the guy.
You can change that to a you can run a slant,
you can change it to a fade. You can do
whatever you want. Um. You know, so I don't necessarily
I don't necessarily buy that they've had those conflicts before.
(13:57):
Let me just go back to the week four five
when they lost to Jacksonville and Ben Roethlisberger was like, Oh,
I don't know if I have it anymore, you know,
I mean, it just seems like a bit of drama
over there in Pittsburgh, as there always is. But you know,
they played a really good game and and bottom line
is they came up short. You know, you can call
it controversial play, um, but it is what it is.
(14:20):
And you're still gonna be in a playoff team and
you've got a chance to rectify the whole thing. So
I hate the fact that that nobody wants to take
responsibility for it. I'd just like to stand in front
of the podium, go my bath through a pick. Shouldn't
have done it, shouldn't pulled the trigger. Ultimately, you know what,
on every check that's written, you know, I had to
sign it. I'm the endorser every time I throw a ball.
(14:41):
So just accept responsibility to move on and trying to
fix it going forward. That's the voice of Marshalaire. It
seemingly the voice of reason. Um. How much of their
defensive issues, though, are made more pronounced because they don't
they're not gonna have She's here and then now you
don't know when they're gonna get Antonio brownback. Yeah, you
know what it it's certainly. I mean, even with that,
(15:04):
they still played a pretty good game. They couldn't contain Gronk.
Everybody has a trump time containing Gronk. They played a
lot more man than they have in the past. Um,
I thought that was a good change up for them.
And you know, the Antonio Brown thing hurts. But even
with Antonio Brown, they still had a chance to win
at the end. So I might not take some confidence
away from that. I think some confidence away from that experience.
(15:26):
And you never want to lose. And there is no
moral victories. But the bottom line is that you know,
if you looked at it, the men, we meet these
guys again in the NFC Championship if it comes to that,
and we have Antonio Brown back, and we had the
experience of playing a lot of man and all we
have to do the speak taken. Oh well, let's let's
(15:48):
reconnect with with Mark Slayrath. These are three times Super
Bowl champion of NFL on Fox analyst and so he's
he's like, look, let's let's not get caught up in
the nuance of of of of the discussion after the
plays after the game. Instead, look at the greater good.
And they're greater good. Quite frankly, is the Steelers were
damned close in spite of their two massive injuries. Um,
(16:11):
what about the rule? Stink? Um Like, Look, the rule
is the rule. I don't know anybody who doesn't think
that Jesse James caught the football, but by rule, I
guess he didn't complete the process of it. Why haven't
they changed this thing yet? Uh, you're jest as good
as mine. And you know, one thing about the league.
(16:32):
It's completely reactionary. But I would think you'd want to
use some common sense. I mean, for eighty years that
was touchdown, you know, and then with the Calvin Johnson rule,
it's become not a touchdown. And I just think it's ridiculous.
I think there's a lack of um and grue it
kind of play calling or are officiating, if you will,
(16:54):
like the whole thing, once you cross the you have
possession of the ball, and he crossed the goal line.
If you ended that to a running back, that's a touchdown.
Why does that rule not apply with the receiver because
you have to the ground. I don't know. I don't
understand it. Yeah, and nobody does. And hell, you can
go through the season, man, there's so many It's just
in the Patriots alone, there's so many opportunities where balls
(17:18):
that moved like that were called touchdowns where they weren't
called touchdowns. Or the course of this season, there was
there was a catch in the Green Bay Carolina game
that there's no way that was a touchdown. Um with
a receiver caught it, you know, bobbled around that fell
down and you know, simultaneously hit the ground. Uh, one
cheek out a bounds, one cheek inbounds, laying on his backside,
(17:39):
and they call him a touchdown. I have no there's
no consistency with which they call that rule. I have
no idea what they're doing. It drives me crazy. Um
as a football. As a football handless, I don't know
the rule. I think after the officials. I mean, they
know that they know the rule that gets called different
ways every weekend, and I would just like some consistent
(18:00):
officiating and a consistent rule that actually, you know, a
fifth grader should be able to see it and say,
yeah that was a catcher, Yeah that's not a catch,
and we should be able to move on from there.
Stell got the show Fox Sports Radio. That's the voice
of Marshal are At, a three time Super Bowl champion. Okay,
let's let's let's peruse our way kind of around the league.
The Kansa City Chiefs back or is this simply the
(18:23):
Chargers not being good enough on a bright stage. Yeah,
I think it was more the Chargers not being great.
You know what what had hurt the Chargers in their
own for start was defensively just a lack of tackling,
and it was a real it was a real issue
early in their season. They kind of rectified it, kind
(18:43):
of reared its ugly head again against the Chiefs and
he got behind a little bit, and then you know,
Philip Rivers makes a couple of mistakes. But yeah, I
think I think it's more about um, some big place
Chiefs were able to make both defensively and offensively. I
think there's still a team that somewhat italy flawed. Um,
if you can give people to you know, fall for
(19:05):
all the I can do all the motion stuff of
all the you know, the the wide receiver jet sweeps
and and you know the shovel passes and all that stuff.
If you get people to fall for that, um, you're
gonna be able to produce offensively. I think at their
core they still have a real issue being physical at
the point of attack, both offensively and defensively, dictating in
(19:28):
the running game offensively, and being able to stop the
running game consistently on the defensive side of the ball,
and teams to play them straight that way and have
great eye discipline when they're facing the Chiefs offense, or
teams that will beat the Chiefs on a consistent basis, right,
Philip Eagles struggled with the with the New York Giants.
How big a drop off you see between Carson Wentz
and Nicholes. You know, here's the only real issue that
(19:52):
I am like, when things break down, I always look
at the quarterback position. Sevent of the time, you're on schedule,
meaning you know, you drop back, you hand the ball off,
you run play action, you draw imaginal five step drop,
you deliver the ball on time, and that I don't
think there's much of a drop off. I don't think
there's a big issue. A little bit, but not a
(20:15):
big issue. I think Nick Foles is perfectly capable of
operating that offense. It's the thirty percent of the time
when things break down, your ability to improvise, That's where
Nick falls will will our Nick Foles will fall short.
So because he's just not in the athlete that Carson wentzays,
and Carson Wentz will keep drives a lot, if keep
plays a lot, it'll scramble around, still make a throw
(20:37):
an incredible pro or you know, take off and make
a play happen with his speech. Fools is not that guy,
So you have to be that much better running the ball,
stay in front of the chains, making sure on third
down you're a third down and you know in three
minus as opposed to third down and six plus and
and that's kind of where you've got to be with
(20:57):
Folds playing quarterback. So forget though, you know, I look
at the Rams in general. Remember when case Keenom played
for the Rams, he couldn't play well. He's having a
pretty damn good season right now. Foles goes from the
Eagles to the Rams, he can't play with the Rams.
He comes back, he put up four trust towns I
believe last weekend. Um, remember Jared Goff who was oh
and seven when he started with the Rams, And now
(21:19):
all of a sudden, is you know, a candidate for
Rookie of the Year. You know, he's playing pretty art
he's his second year player, but you know what I mean,
he's playing great football. Um. You know. So to me,
like a lot of it has to do with the
system you're in and and the players that are around you.
And I think the Fols will be fine. I just like,
like I said, the only thing that he lacks is
(21:41):
the ability and make something happen when things break down. Um, Okay,
help me out with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Should I buy
that Blake Blake Portles numbers are spectacular over the past
past month. Um, is this really who Blake Portles is? Yeah,
as long as they played the football they're playing. You know,
I did a game Jacksonville game early in the season,
(22:04):
and you know Blake has taken a beating. But what
you have to remember about Blake is Blake Mortals had
all kinds of arm troubles early because of his mechanics.
He went and exclusively worked with Tomhouse, spent a boatload
of time read developing his mechanics um, learning how to
create arm speed and arm energy through his basse, through
(22:26):
his feet. And this was one of the things where
he lacked consistency early, because you know, things break down
you're you're trying to change your mechanics completely and occasionally
when you're not stressed or when you're not you know,
under duress, Um, you can repeat those mechanics, but they
do break down. So what you've seen is you've seen
(22:48):
a whole year of him putting these things together and
a team that can run the ball, that can dictate
the running game. That when Blake Mortals drops back and
flags that play action. Everybody's getting sucked up. I mean,
you're you're underneath coverage gets sucked up and you create
these open get just huge chasms between the deep coverage
and the underneath coverage. And now that he's a little
(23:11):
bit better mechanically and a little sounder mechanically, you're seeing
a guy who's really accurate and and he's embraced the
you know what, I checked things in the line of scrimmage.
I make sure I get it in the right run play.
And my job is not to throw a thirty five
times a game. I'm okay throwing it ten times a
game if that's what it comes down to, as long
as I'm close to completion percentage, because that's where I
(23:35):
need to be. And having that conversation with him, you know,
this is the guy that really then really is taking
it to heart, and he's worked his butt off to
become a better quarterback. And I think what you're seeing
is the fruits of all that work. You know, starting
the show right now with a very balanced football team,
or you don't have to go out and win it
because your defense is that good, because you know you
(23:57):
can run the ball last things. Don't that same jacksonal
team punched him in the mouth last week, and then
of course the Rams seemed to finish the job. They're
upflording to nothing on Seattle. I know they have massive
injuries and that they've never been able to fix the
issues in the offensive line, but but I mean, like,
is this scrap it and start over for Seattle? Is
(24:18):
it get healthy and patch it up for Seattle? Like,
what's what's the Seattle fix? I think? I think the
Seattle fixes get healthy on defense. You gotta get healthy
on defense, because I still think they've got an elite
level defense when healthy. And then offensively, you've gotta one
fix that offensive line. You have never as an organization
(24:39):
under Pete Carroll spending money there. You've already given it.
You've given it to their offensive line coach Tom Cable
and said, hey, here, we're gonna give you a bunch
of you know, we're gonna give you a bunch of
green apples, and you've got to cultivate them into red
delicious by the end of the season. And you know what,
he's done a really good job with what they've given him.
(24:59):
But they haven't given him much, and they haven't even
been green apples, have been crab apples, and he's not
been able to develop that this year. I think they've
got a scrap pile that they've got to start over
the offensive line. They've got to get some you know,
they've got to get some real stud players there. I
think they need to add a couple of receivers that,
you know, really take some pressure off for Russell Wilson.
But I think it starts up front with the j
(25:20):
L Shawks and they have to fix that. They cannot
continue to go with this philosophy if we're not spending
any money on the offensive line and we're just gonna
let our coach coach web because at some point you
gotta have some talent um stink great stuff. As always,
really appreciate you join us. Have yourself a merry Christmas.
We'll talk to you next week, buddy. All right, that's
uh Mark Slayer at three times Super Bowl Champion. Brought
(25:42):
to you by True Car. Online car shopping can be confusing,
not anymore. With True Price from True Car, now you
can know the exact price you'll pay for your next car.
So visit Truecard enjoying more confident car buying experience. Let's
get to um dan buyer Dan, what's going on the
world sports. Well, a couple of contract extensions handed out
in college football. First one at f A you link
Kevin getting a tenure extension from Florida Atlantic. Tonight the
(26:05):
Owls take on Acron and the Boca Ritsone Bowl. Well,
Washington Statedard coach Mike Leach received a five year extension
from the school, or about twenty million dollars since the
point of a ten year extension with with line Kevin.
H Well, maybe it's just h I I don't know really,
and we're gonna get to that in game time. I
have a feeling that the the I, I know what
(26:27):
you mean, the realistic nature. Maybe it's just a bump
in next year salary. I think it's a lot like
those NFL salaries right where you you say you put
some number out the contracts worth this net, knowing they're
never going to achieve that much anyway. Yeah, Yeah, I
think that's that's pretty fair. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin
saying wide receiver at Todio Brad is gonna miss their
(26:47):
game on Christmas against the Texans because of a torn
calf muscle not much of a surprise, as multiple reports
say he'll be out for the rest of the regular season.
A report for the NFL Networks is the Patriots are
hopeful running back Rex Burkhead can return from a spring
knee in time for the playoffs. In baseball, freezing picture You,
Darvis confirmed you met with the Cubs on Monday, while
Lakers center Brook Lopez gonna miss at least three weeks
(27:08):
of action after spreading his ankle and last night's overtime
loss to the Golden State Warriors. New York Islanders heading
back to Long Island as the team was awarded rights
to land in to build a new arena in Nassau County,
and finally, Nashville, Tennessee, will be awarded one of two
expansion franchises in the m LS. The other cities up
for expansion Cincinnati, Detroit and Sacramento. Doug. Okay, so they're
(27:32):
moving to where are they moving to? Like to Belmont? Belmont? Yes,
that is correct, that's not that. I don't think that's
that far in Uh, that's I think it's over by
the where the racetrack is, right half. I think it
would have to be. Yeah, I'm not too familiar with
Long Island. I think it's where's Belmont Park. There's a
site there Islanders are gonna gonna develop the It's the
(27:55):
village of Belmont. It's not far from it's not terribly
far from the city. Like, look, I I don't know
how much you guys are aware of. Do you even
know where the Islanders play right now? Yes? Well, let
me ask, let me ask Ramos. Promise you know where
they play. I want to say New York somewhere. Great, John,
(28:15):
it's great, John. Do you want to try again? How
about the where the Rangers play about Medicine Square Garden.
They do not play with the Range Mad Square Garden.
You want to try this one music? I'm gonna go
with no Doug. Okay, this is it's actually kind of
like I find all this stuff interesting. I don't know
(28:35):
if you guys do. Um. Okay, So NASA Colosseum, which
is where they used to play, Okay, that's out in Hempstead,
New York Veterans. It's it's like an old kind of
an old barn, right, and that is way out on
Long Island. That is not on Long Island, right, Like
you gotta go past like Gadia, and it's like it's
not smack down in the middle like Long Island is
(28:57):
really really like it takes a couple of hours to
drive from tip to tip if you will, to get
and at the very very eastern tip is the Hampton's okay,
and actually Montauk is at the very eastern tip, so
it's it's still in the western side of it. But
Nasa is a different county and once you crossed something
of Nasa and that's what they used to play. So
(29:19):
they moved to Brooklyn where the nets play. And that
arena is beautiful for concerts, incredible for basketball, you know what,
it's terrible for hockey, Like it's it was literally built
to be just a bit too small because they didn't
want a hockey team. And the sight lines, which are
great for everything else, you can't see the entire ice
(29:40):
for like five thousand of the seats. It's the worst
thing you've ever seen. Like they moved into a brand new,
beautiful building and and where Brooklyn is is really cool.
It's like a it's like a train hub. There's all
the different trains. So the idea was like, hey, look,
if you're from Long Island. You work in the city,
you get on a train after work, you come out,
you go have Brooklyn's actually more expensive than Long Island,
(30:02):
than than Manhattan to live on. It's that hot. Right now,
come out to Brooklyn, you have dinner, you go and
you see see the pucks, and then you get a
train and take the train home just like you would normally.
You know, if you're coming in from Long Island, you
just come in on the train, you pop off, boom,
you're right there at the arena. If you live in Brooklyn,
or you live anyway, you get on the subway, you
can go right there to get The problem is that, um, yeah,
(30:23):
that's not really the way it works. With Islander fans.
They were so mad that they were moving, even though
moving close to where they worked and close to where
more people lived. And the fact that the arena wasn't
built for hockey, that no one's gone. It's a complete disaster.
Like so this is in the biggest city in the
country and they couldn't find a home. And even now
like all right, they just got the land to prove
(30:45):
like it ain't like you clear Land and they'll have
an arena next year. It's an abject disaster. Almost comical,
most comical anyway. There, that's the most we've talked about hockey,
and that's the most people will talk about. Hey, I
thought I thought it was in informative stuff. How is
how is hockey going this year? I like, who's who's good?
(31:07):
Penguins still good? We'll let me tell you this coming uh,
when April and May comes around, look out for them?
Black Hawks? Are you a black Hawk fan? No? I
just figured that that was probably a team that other
teams should be wary of come the come the spring,
in the playoffs. Who do you think will be good? John?
Like John like the Penguins. He's along with you on
(31:28):
that aspect of look out for them come springtime. Penguins.
Have they won the last two? Yes? Sure? Right? Does
anybody have any idea? We all work in sports. I
remember the Penguins winning last year? Did they win the
last two? Yes? They did? I thought I got that right.
I think Nashville is still pretty good, Yes they are.
I think the Kings are still pretty good. Kings are, Yes,
(31:49):
there's a team in Vegas. Are they any good? They are? Yeah,
they are. They are pretty good. Is anybody going to
the games in Vegas. Um, yes, I believe so the Nights,
the Golden Knights, Golden bol to Knights, you get like
golden Knights. It's like double entendre of the word night.
There's so many better names than the Knights than the
Golden Knights. I mean so so many, so many much
(32:14):
better plays on words than Golden Knights. Um, they are
very apparently very good. There you go, there's your Hockey Talk,
Hockey Talk, Hockey talg hockey guy. We'll talk Kobe. I
probably I was torn as to put Kobe in my
top ten. I probably should have put him top ten.
(32:35):
Modern day players are really torn. Just you got there's
there's guys like, do you put Steve nash on there?
He's got two m v ps? Do you put Steph
Curry on there? He's got two MVPs? Do you put
Russell Westbrook in your top ten? He just averaged a
triple double, but he's never won a championship. Like, look,
Kobe Bryant the strongest we gotta get. We'll get to
Kobe Bryant topp next hour. How to kind of contextualize,
(32:58):
categorize Kobe Bryant. But coming up next, what are the chances.
Lane Kiffins stays at Florida Atlantic for ten years, just
on a ten year contract. I'll tell you next. Online
shopping can be confusing, Well not anymore. With True Price
from True Car, now you can know the exact price
you'll pay for your next car. So visit True Car
(33:20):
and enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug Otlive Show,
Fox Sports Radio, Iconic Dr Seus's film, Isn't it? Most
definitely okay? The Doctor Seus's version of The Grinch or
Christmas Story or Charlie Brown Christmas to go ahead? I'll
(33:42):
go with Grinch one Christmas, Charlie Brown two and Christmas
Story three music. I think my gut reaction is to
agree with John. That's how I drink them. Buyer, Where
would you go on? I'd go the opposite. I'm not
a Grinch. Christmas Story one, I'm not. I don't even
(34:03):
like Christmas, let alone the Gridge. I like the uplifting
Christmas stories only. I've been to the Christmas Story House
a couple of times. Fudge only. I didn't say fudge, right, Yes,
I would go what is it about Charlie Brown that
every we love so much? Right? Like what is it
(34:23):
about Charlie Brown that we love so much? It's it's
not maybe it's the Charlie Brown's teacher, w w W
w w w w. All right, and all that is
is preparing you for marriage, right, That's really what it is.
How's your day? Hunety wa wa wa wa Walt Walt, Walt, Walt,
Walt Harper, w Wal, Wal Walt, Walt, Walt Heys Walt, Walt, Walt,
(34:47):
Walt Walt. Now I listen to every word she said,
Who am I getting? Uh? What would I go? One
to three? Who? That's tough stuff. I think I would
go Uh. I would go Charlie Brown. One. I would
go Gringe too. I would go Christmas Story. Three. I
love Christmas Story. I love when he gets his tongue
stuck to the poll. I love the lamp, the leg,
(35:08):
lamp shade, and I love a lot about it. But
I there's something about the cartoons which have me completely
reeled in, the child in me. Anyway, all right, let's
get to say, this is game time on the Doug
Gottlieb Show. Buyer. What do I do? Want to say
(35:33):
one more quick thing about the Christmas Story, because it
does seem that they try to shove it down our
throats with the twenty four hour viewing, we had the
Live Christmas Story. If you could just remember how you were,
where you were the first time you saw it, and
just remember that time every time you watch it, you
can enjoy it more. Is there anything else I'm missing?
There any other like I always like Frosty. I mean,
(35:56):
I've always liked that cartoon special. So right, I've got today.
What are the chances Doug with Carson Wentz out for
the year and Russell Wilson and Philip Rivers having bad losses?
In week fifteen, what are the chances Rams running back
Todd Gurley emerges as the NFL's most Valuable Player. Tom
(36:22):
Brady is still alive, Yes he is. Pictures still in
first place, Yes they are. I'm gonna say chance. He
might be the best at his position, and he may
be the most important to the Rams. The Rams also
have an awesome defense. Uh, I think you know, Golf's
not gonna get m VP voting, But I think Golf's improvement,
like the just the overall structure of the franchise offensively, Yeah,
(36:47):
I I kind of think, um, if he gets the
carries that. Sean McVeigh has said that they should be
giving him over the next two games. I think there
could be a strong push. I don't think they're going
to give him those carries over the next Why would they, right, Like,
why would you beat him up just to win the
m v P. That'd be the dumbest thing ever. They
(37:07):
should have given him the carries two weeks ago against
was at the Eagles, right, they should have given those
carries then. But now if you're the Rams, like dude,
you need him fresh and rested for the playoffs. You
don't need him dinged up. Even catches out of the backfield.
Titans this week is serious. You don't need to play,
doesn't even need to suit up against the Niners. Florida
Atlantic has given a head football coach Lane Kiffin a
(37:27):
ten year contract extension. What are the chances Kiffen actually
stays at f AU for the entirety of that deal?
Zero per cent? Doug, Is that what you're saying? Here's
the thing about Lane Kiffins, So where this where he's
a little bit older than me. Um. The longest he's
ever been any place in his life was USC. He
(37:48):
was there for five seasons. As an assistant coach. Then
he came back. He was there for three seasons, that's
through two cents stints. He was there eight years. Yeah,
I'm not just talking like, Look, nobody's spent ten years
at one school growing up. Now you bounce around. Your
dad's a coach. Um. He played at Fresno State, then
it was an assistant there, then went to Colorado State
(38:09):
the Jaguar. Like, I'm saying point zero zero zero zero one,
That's what I'm saying. We're saying, I'm I'm nothing's impossible.
He gets stuck there or whatever, like literally can't get
another job, and then you know, but he hasn't stayed
anywhere for ten years in his life. Why would he
stay at Florida Atlantic, a place that's just a way
(38:29):
station for another job. A report for me ESPN says
the Celtics reached out to the Pelicans last season about
trying to acquire forward Anthony Davis. Pelicans declined the offer,
and Davis is under contract with the team through the season. Doug,
what are the chances the Pelicans trade Davis before that
contract expires in uh before eighty five percent chance chance?
(38:57):
The idea that he's going to be there for four
more years that that's to work. I don't see it.
I'll say percent shows the T n T. It's how
the NBA crew of Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith,
at Shaquille and Neal will call the Christmas Night game
between the Timberwolves and the Lakers. Yeah, Doug, So what
are the chances this crew will call other games this season?
(39:17):
Four T n T. Chance, because there'll be some really
high highs. There'll be some really low lows. But it's different.
It's their biggest names, and you're looking for different reasons
to tune in to watch a regular NBA game. I
would say chance they do it again. Yes, if this
is just moderately entertaining or moderately good or to be
(39:40):
done again, it'll be entertaining. Those guys are super, super funny.
This is probably be you know, outside of the NBA
playoffs the Moats, than any of those guys watch one game,
so they may they may fall out asleep at some
point during the game. They finally dug after losing to
FOURT Wayne last night seventy two. What are the chances
that Archie Miller turns around Indiana Basketball this year or
(40:01):
in general, in general, ohcent the Masterdonzo two and oh
last two years against the Usiers. This is game time
on the Dug Gottlieb Show. Get in your zone with
great value offers and free services that help your vehicle
deliver its best performance. AutoZone has everything you need, everything

Why can't I read English? What is what's the matter
of mean? Today? Maybe Cuddy coffee? I think we have
coffee coffee, um my. Thanks to m Scott Shapiro and
Don Martin, they got some cool Fox Sports radio headphones.
You got your headphones. I haven't got those yet. Yours
(40:46):
yours are in your yours in the mail our thanks
to r J bel from pregame dot com got everybody
chocolates here at the Doug Gottlip Show. You can hear
his show straight at Vegas on Fridays and Saturday nights.
Of course you hear him on Thursdays here in the
Doug Gotlip Show. Up next, all announced my top ten
all time NBA modern history. I'm actually gonna change a
little bit from what I announced earlier on the Herd.
(41:08):
I didn't love it. I hadn't had my coffee then,
and I'm gonna have a cup of coffee, and I'm
gonna give you the all time top ten NBA player's
modern history. Next. What up, Doug Gottlie Show, Fox Sports Radio.
It's a really hard thing to do your your all
time top ten lists? Right. Um, here's what happened. Kobe
Bryant had his number retired last night. I thought his
(41:28):
speech was outstanding, thought he was eloquent. Uh, And I
actually have grown uh to like Kobe kind of embracing
what he calls the Mama mentality post career. I will
point out that like those of us who lived through
Kobe Bryant, we know that there were incredible moments. But
(41:50):
he's eleven time First Team All NBA player. Um, but
there was some incredible highs, some incredible lows. I don't
really in all honesty, I don't ever factor in, nor
do I think it's part of the discussion would happened
in Eagle County, Colorado, just because it didn't go to trial.
(42:14):
I have nothing really to work on other than some
of the things I've read. And the fact is I
can't go. I can't I can't publicly convict somebody who
wasn't actually convicted of anything or even tried for for
a crime. Now that may not hold up to snuff
in two thousand seventeen. It's the way I view it. So, um,
(42:44):
we got some we got some breaking news. Damby already
got breaking news from Fox Sports. I guess Dougett was
just one and done is The Green Bay Packers have
announced that Aaron Rodgers has been placed on injured reserve,
ending his season, and a corresponding move, they've signed quarterback
Joe Calla and so Aaron Rodgers done for the season
as the Packers were eliminated from the playoff pushed last
(43:07):
night with the Falcons win over the Buccaneers. Okay, so
look they're eliminated. No sense in playing him. If this
was the Giants, people would freak out right like the
Giant that people would freak out. They're like, what are
you kidding me? You're not playing Aaron Rodgers? And Rodgers
is awesome? Package Like, why are we gonna throw him
(43:30):
out there? You got a hit, he's got a broken
collar bone. We know he's awesome. We gotta get better
players around him. By the way, We'll give bred Hunley
a couple more games to start, see maybe we can
drive up his trade value or maybe we'll keep We
got one more year under club control. They're go ahead.
(43:50):
So this is what seems weird to me. And maybe
you don't actually know the answer, but I just feel
like it's the type of thing that comes to like
fans minds, he came back from injury and played, so
therefore he's healthy. Can you just put anyone you want
on injured reserve and just like, yeah, no, we tell you,
we're telling you he's not hurt. Yeah him, I find
(44:11):
you say you can say like he's got a sore
he listed as a yeah, you cannot. You can do
healthy scratches. You absolutely do healthy scratches. Um, it sounds
like Ryan's concerned if he had enough sick days left
to take off the last two weeks. If that's no.
(44:33):
I just feel like, you know, because like in the NBA,
people are always like, oh, you're just resting to tank,
and it's been a big thing for NBA players, like
if you're healthy, they want you to play. And I
just find it weird that Aaron Rodgers, being one of
the most popular players in the league, came back played
a game, and now they're like, by the way, we're
gonna put him back on the shelf because he's on
the injured reserve. I just find that to be a
(44:54):
little weird, especially when everyone's talking about this whole tanking
versus non tanking thing. Yeah, I mean, I think they
can protect themselves by going like, look, he's not fully healthy.
He wasn't really ready. Um you know, it wasn't really ready.
We don't want to put him in harms. Play takes
on the vikings, they're really good. Yeah, I don't know.
(45:15):
I don't know, um, but yeah, I feel bad for
Rodgers because he did everything right to come back, and
he didn't play that well and by his own accounts
like he didn't he didn't play as well as he
wanted to play. But I would also put and and
what's interesting about like, here's the juxtaposition of if he
and Ben Roethlisberger. If you watched Aaron Rodgers press conference,
(45:40):
you watched him play like the Packers were actually running
the football fairly well, and yet they they reverted back
to the like let's just snap in Aaron Rodgers and
everybody try and get open, right, Like like his backyard
football is like go along unless Aaron Rodgers winks at
you and then don't go along. Right, Like, that's really
seemingly their game plan. So the coaching staff play callers
(46:03):
did him no favors, and yet at the end of
the game, did you hear him say, like, man, we
should run the ball more. Nope, He's like, should have
played better. Those are those that usually make and I didn't.
Whereas Roethlisberger, like he throws a pick at the end
of game, He's like, I wanted to clock it, but
they wouldn't listen to me, so I ran their stupid
play and then I threw a stupid interception. Such a
(46:25):
team guy, my bad on the interception. It was their fault.
So uh anyway, yeah, that's not surprising though, right, Why
would you throw your quarterback out there last two weeks
of the season anyway, I don't understand playoff teams like
this whole machievesment over like we want to finish the
(46:45):
season like okay and hurt your quarter like the Philadelphia
Eagles simply cannot play falls in the last game of
the regular season. There's just no way. I just know what, Like,
you don't want to get to who's their third quarterback?
Anyone have any idea? Well, don't look by or knows by?
Or do you know or do you have to look? No?
I was just I didn't know what team you were talking.
(47:07):
I was doing some other work. Um, did you say
the Packers Eagles third string which is now second string quarterback?
Without looking? Can you do you know who it is? No?
I don't. Okay, Ramos, do you want to do? You
want to venture a guest? I do not want to
venture a guest. You want a bunch of venture a guests.
Joe Callaghan, Um, okay, uh this he has started games
(47:32):
in the NFL. I think I know who it is.
I just wanted to give Ryan a chances. He was RelA. No,
I'm not who you think is. I think it's Matt Barkley,
isn't it? No, it's his name. Is Matt's not Barkley.
I don't know. Is Matt Barkley still in the league.
I think he's with San Francisco. Is he with San Francisco?
No idea? Now you thought, Yeah, Mitt Barkley for a
time was the third string quarterback in Um, all right,
(47:55):
I'll give you. I'll give Thattt Barkley's on the Cardinals
right now. Cardinals. Um, I'll give you a one more hint,
but bio get it. He played for Bill O'Brien in college.
Matt mcgloyn, who was in Houston for a day when
(48:16):
Deshaun Watson went down. He was he was they sign
him for a day and they're like, nah, you suck,
go back home. Matt just want to say hi, give
you so, here's like twenty five grand for the trip.
He's like, cool, thanks, coach. Can I get some swag?
He's like, yeah, here's the sweatshirt, some shorts. Once you
go through the football and he threw the vote, like
oh yeah, I don't think this is gonna work out.
(48:38):
It's like the voice. It's like the voice and like
no chairs turned around. Matt McGlenn was like throwing the football. Good.
Adam's like, hey, listen, who wants you to do is
go back home to where are you from? Kid? Yeah,
well I went to Penn State. Like that's nice, good story,
cool story. We want you to go back to Scranton
and work on it and come back next season. Like
(48:59):
oh okay. Then he goes so like, look, if you're
the Eagles you simply cannot put Matt, but you cannot
risk Matt mcgloydan starting for you in the playoffs, like
you know, like you want to try and win one
more game and then he can't play against Cowboys. How
would you? That's why those weeks seventeen games could be
the best, ticket could be the worst. And oh yeah,
(49:22):
by the way, it's why we'll never buy season tickets ever, ever, ever,
especially to an NFL game to NFL team. I mean,
look at the schedule of the last week of the
season and like, it's a mixed bag. The Raiders Chargers
could be an awesome game or it could be complete
poop show. I don't get season tickets dug for any
(49:43):
football level. If college, you're buying it for maybe every
other year for the that one big game. But a
lot of times, yeah, I agree. NBA, you know a
team is coming to town, you know the Warriors are
going to be there. Football, it's sometimes a crapshoot. Uh yeah.
I would say, like, look, if you do the college thing,
(50:04):
you're doing it because you know, you know, you have
to donate money in order just to buy tickets, right,
which is like a psl um. If you do the
college thing. You're doing it because you go and hang
out and you see all your buddies whatever. But yeah, like,
I don't know how people like you, how do you
have how do you have kids? And like seven saturdays
out of the year, I'm gonna I'm gonna go, Like,
(50:26):
I know, I got soccer games and baseball games and
football games whatever, but the hell with all of you guys,
I'm gonna go spend an hour drive into a college campus,
then five hours tailgating, then four hours going to a game,
then two hours getting home. Like, oh, that sounds like
a good deal, Doug. I've got friends and I see
it on social media on Facebook where it'll be like, hey,
I got four Badger tickets to the Western Carolina game.
(50:47):
Message me if interested. Um, I'm pretty sure they get
zero messages from that. Who wants to see Western Carolina?
I would I would go for one game, like one
game a year. I just don't understand the investment and
going for bunch of games, Like how how are people
not smarter than this? Well, sure, but if you go,
yeah that's the thing, you go to Western you know Carolina,
and then you're like, okay, well, Michigan States in town
(51:09):
in two weeks. Guess what we gotta do that? Dan?
Would you would you take those tickets for free? No? No,
I wouldn't go. But there's lots of games you wouldn't
go to for there's like the professional sporting events. Okay,
so like here's here's the final week games of the season. Okay, uh,
Panthers Falcons, that's probably winner goes to the playoffs, right,
winner goes Falcons have to win I think both their
(51:30):
last two games. I wander to get to the playoffs,
I believe. So that's a huge game in Atlanta Packers Lions.
Now the Lions could be playing to get into the playoffs. Well,
you're playing the Packers without Aaron Rodgers. Like, okay, Jaguars
Titans probably won't mean much. Oh know, Titans will have
to win that game to get to play that's the
probably win that game to get to the playoffs. Texans Colts. Wow, Oh,
(51:57):
how much would you have to be paid? Okay to
go to go to a game? What's the what's the
date of Christmas Eve? So this is like, are they
in the second is that when the games are no,
they'll be on New Year's Eve. They're New Year's Eve.
So on New Year's Eve, I guess that's not bad
like Downtown Indie, Like, let's go to the football game
for a litle bit. But it's Look, it's a noon
(52:19):
start Central time. I don't know if there's central one.
It's a long day. Bill's Dolphins as the potential Bills
could play to go to the playoffs. Bears, Vikings, Uh
yet another home game, like the Vikings could play a
ridiculous number of home games here, but probably not going
to see most of the Vikings starters play Jets, Patriots, Patriots.
(52:41):
I might need to win it. Probably need to win it. Um,
So that's that's the Jacoby. No, they don't have to
who's their backup quarterback? Now, what's that? The Colts? No,
the Patriots, the Patriots? Brian Yer? Ah yeah right, Hure,
there you go. So there's actually some decent games that
(53:03):
I'm telling you. The best game is still Raiders Raiders Chargers,
Raiders Chargers are going who that hasn't been flexed yet
though it will be Kuna Barrows joined us next, right, cool,
I got a bunch of things to get with him.
If check engine light comes on, don't let your car
(53:25):
suffer suffer head to auto zone today the auto zone
fixed finder can check it on the spot for free.
It could be something serious or could be something as
simple as loose cass cap. You dope, right, oh, loose
cass cap. I wonder if the auto zone fixed finders like,
you're an idiot, fill up the air and your tires, dummy,
(53:47):
that would be really funny, like yeah, sorry getting the
zone auto zone. I didn't give my top ten lists.
I didn't talk about Kobe Bryant. I got completely the
news of the day that Aaron Rodgers isn't going to play.
I guess superseded it. I'll I'll give you my thoughts,
my honest thoughts on Kobe. I'm not a hater, I'm
not a lover. I'm somewhere in the middle. Kobe was awesome,
but not quite as awesome as how he was made
(54:09):
to be last night. So it's kind of weird, all right.
We'll get to that after Connor Barwin joins us he
placed for the l A Rams came back healthy and
the rams were up forty to nothing. What was there
a statement in that statement Win we'll discuss next. Car
shopping can be confusing with terms like dealer price, Liz price,
an invoice price. True Car shows what other people paid
(54:30):
for the car you want, so you can recognize a
good price when you're ready to buy a new or
used car. Visit True Car and they enjoy more confident
car buying experience. Doug Otlives show well, Darius Rucker for you.
Come on, man, there's my boy. That's why I did
it yesterday as my boy Connor borrows my boy although
now we live close, although he lives in a place
(54:52):
where you can see the water. I think I know
where he lives because I troll him on Instagram, but
I don't know because I haven't actually been invited over. Uh.
We dry We drive a car from the same company.
Like we're like, We're like, we want to. I want
to be best friends with Connor Borrowin, but he has
offered no desire to be best friends with me. He
joins us on the Doug Galli Show. You doing man,
I'm doing great? How are you doing good? Uh? Was
(55:14):
there a statement in that statement? When like that felt
like a purposeful ass whopon? That's what it felt like
to those of us watching, well it was. It was
a dominating performance. By us, uh for you know, the
entire game, in all three phases of the game, and
it was Um, you know, I haven't played this division,
but I think it was especially special for the guys
(55:34):
better in this division for a while to go get
that type of victory in Seattle. Um, you had you
had a plate put in your arm, right like, so,
so take me through this surgical procedure that you had done. Yeah,
it was pretty crazy. Actually. So we played the Saints
at home, I think three weeks ago, and I dope
to make a tackle line Camara and I broke my forearm,
(55:57):
just kind of fractured the all that in the arm.
And just how crazy and unbelievable the NFL is I
did that about I don't know too thirty on Sunday.
I was out of surgery by like ten am Monday
morning with a play in six screws in my arm,
uh to kind of hold the bone together. And then
they sat me out the Cardinals game, the Phillies of
(56:20):
the Eagles game, and then I came back and played
last week. So pretty amazing work by our medical team. Yeah.
And in the process of that, you also found out congratulations,
you guys are having a boy, right, yes, thank you. Yeah,
my wife is pregnant and we found out about a
week or two ago that we're having a boy. To
my surprise, I have all I have all boys in
my family, my brother has boys. Everybody's going to be
(56:41):
a boy, and I was convinced I was gonna have
the girl. So as you saw my Instagram video, I
was just completely shocked that it was going to be
a boy. Listen, You've done a lot of great things
in your life, right, I mean played college basketball and football.
You've made it to all these different you made it.
You've had several different kind of incarnations of your football life.
You know, uh un Philly last year in Houston before that,
(57:02):
you know, kind of all over this league. What's that
moment though, Like when you're like you're having a having
a boy. It was unbelievable. I mean, if if anybody
follows me or doesn't, you can see I was like
screaming like a girl. And I've never done that in
my football careers as many you know, choyful movements I've had.
But I was so excited. My wife's healthy and everything
(57:23):
was good. So we're very We're very lucky and very excited.
That's cool. And plus your son will be able to
play with Sean McVeigh. They're gonna be, you know, the
only a couple of years younger. Well, Sean McBey will
definitely still be coaching. And if my son ever turns
it up to be a good athlete, that's for sure.
Connor borrowin joining us in the Doug Gotlip Show. It's interesting.
So you're like, the surgical repair of your injury is
(57:45):
in many ways similar to what they did to Aaron Rodgers.
And I don't know if you saw this new do this,
but they're gonna shut Rogers down Like that's a weird deal, right,
Like comes back plays one game, They're like, yeah, we're
out of the playoffs. Why don't you sit the rest
of the season. What's your reaction to that? Yeah, I mean,
and it's it's different, and uh, you know this was
the color. I don't know all the details about exactly
(58:05):
his break, And I mean my break was clean, the
bone wasn't displaced. That means it wasn't like, yeah, his
was displaced, So that that makes it a little bit harder.
But obviously, if I if I'm you know, you know,
if a football guy, guy comes back and then decides
he's done because they're out of the playoffs. That's a
little weird for me because we're all trained to, you know,
(58:26):
give everything out every week, no matter what the situation is.
But he's a quarterback. He's a franchise quarterback. He's you know,
defensionally getting at the best. So um degree may packers
obviously have to be smart thing long term. Okay, So
when you signed with this team, we had you on
and I don't remember was this radio show or the
other radio show. I don't I actually don't remember the
timing of it, but we had you on and you
(58:47):
were like hopeful and You're like, look, Wade's there and
I'm one of Wade's guys and he's bringing me in
and I'm gonna turn this thing around. Did you, I mean,
honest to God, did you think it would be possible
you guys would be this good this soon? No? I
didn't really think so, to be completely honest with you,
but I didn't know anything coming in here. All I
knew was Wade. When we talked, all I knew was
(59:07):
Wade was here. I know what his track record was,
and I knew I was doing a very talented defense.
I had been pretty damn good the last couple of years.
I didn't know much about the offense. I knew they
were the worst in the league the last couple of years.
I didn't know much about Sean except for going against
him when he was in Washington, which he was a
huge problem for us, so I did did have a
lot of respect for him. And then obviously I knew
(59:29):
that had the number one, number one tick, so I
was there was a lot of reasons why I came here,
but I didn't I didn't know we would, you know,
beat Seattle forties seven to seven in week fifteen or
whatever it was. But it's more like you look up
at the school, but you guys are up forty to nothing.
And sometimes scores are not indicative of the game, right,
Like things can get away from you, you get behind,
you start throwing picks. But that that score wasn't I
(59:52):
watched the game. You guys just whoop whooped them. They
like they couldn't block you, they couldn't tackle, they couldn't
couldn't tackle you, guys, they couldn't stop you and uh
nor you know, nor could they stop you from getting
to Russell and Russell look confused, he looked frustrated, and
it was like, wow, it really is a whooping. Um.
Let's let's start with your defensive front. How much of
(01:00:12):
it was is Aero Donald and that press rush, and
how much of it is the issues that they're having
in their offensive line. Well, I think they've they've got
some injuries offensive line, but you know they had given
up seven sacks in the last month. Combined that we
got seven, uh in three and a half in three quarters.
So obviously Aaron Donald has a huge is a huge
(01:00:34):
part of that. Um And really, you know, all four
of us up front, a couple of guys that rotated
with up front, we had a great game plan a
lot of us are. You know, Aaron makes a lot
of us better. But we just actually at the game plan,
we were destructive and on the back end we did
some things that really first at a Russell and made
him hold the ball even longer. All right, Um, so
now you guys have won the division. You guys are
(01:00:55):
in the playoffs. Um. We were talking about this earlier,
like you've been through this a lot, Like how much
do you guys do you need to play? How much
does Aaron doalind need to play so that you're sharp,
but you're also like not being injured is as much
a factor in who wins is how good you actually
are having been a veteran, Like, what's your what's your
thoughts on how much you play some of your best players? Well, well, first,
(01:01:17):
we haven't won the division yet. Um, we have to
win this Sunday. We're doing one of the last two. Um.
And then there's you know, we want to win the
last two, aren't you guys? Aren't you guys two games
up on them and you beat him in head to
head twice. No, they beat us the first time. Oh,
that's right, Cooper, Cooper dropping Cooper drop the ball. That's right.
In the first Yeah, we had we had five colonels
and and uh, you know we lost sixteen ten. But yeah,
(01:01:40):
so we need to win one more down here where
we we go win in tennessee this Sunday dision, Well
win the division. But uh, you know, as a defensive player,
I like to play. I like to keep playing. Um,
you know, obviously at the end of game. We we've
had three or four games where we pulled our starters
in the fourth quarter, which makes a big difference. I mean,
we only played you know, three quarters on on Sunday
(01:02:01):
against the Seahawks, So you know, I think we're getting healthy. Uh,
and I think you want to keep playing guys down
the stretch having a great time. Man. It's it's perfect
right now. You know, there's a lot left to go,
and we're happy about Sunday. Um, but we got bigger goals.
I mean what we want to you know, win these
last two and make a run here in the playoffs. Yeah.
I mean, I don't know where does this rank in
(01:02:21):
terms feel wise of teams that you've played on. Is
the best team you've played on at this point in
the season. Yeah, I went, we won the division in
Houston a couple of times, we won the division my
first year in Stilly. Um. But just being completely honest,
it feels like the best team and we were I
think that's I say when I was out here, the
best overall coaching staff I've ever been on, and I
(01:02:42):
still believe that. Um. And then I think overall and
all three phases of the game, UM, I think this
is the most complete team I've ever been on. What
is what is it about this coaching staff that impresses
even somebody as bright as you. Well, I think I
think it starts with great in the way he takes
control of the team and the way he communicating the
obviously what he does on offense. Um, and then you know,
(01:03:03):
I don't know, it's just something about the group of coaches.
They all work together well, Um, there's no egos. They
communicate well with with the players and everything. And you
say this about teams. Are all teams should say this?
But it really I believe it to be true in
l A right now, that everybody only cares about winning
and doing what they kind of win. It's making a difference. Yeah,
it's it's pretty pretty outstanding to watch. Um, how does
(01:03:25):
your arm feel like? Does it? Like you said, like
for people who just joining his carter borrow and joining us.
He told the story month ago broke his arm like
it's a clean break, not in displaced that weekend, has
surgery to put a plate in and put some screws
in and then he's out and then sits out for
two games. Plays this past weekend complete whooping of the
Seattle Seahawks. So now that you played in live game action,
(01:03:45):
how does it actually feel? It feels good? Uh? You know,
it feels fine that the only thing that they learned
about is taking a direct hit to it. So I
wear kind of a little cast on it. Um, But
that's the only I have no pain with it moving around. Um.
The only issue is if I'm playing, If you know,
I get a helmet or cleat or something, a real
violent hit right on where the plate as, it could
(01:04:07):
move the scruise around. But I wear a playing and
it didn't affect me on Sunday when I played. All Right,
A couple other questions here, you're you're you you pledged? Uh,
what's the campaign? You have to raise money for Houston
Food Bank with each tackle, so like this is important.
You gotta get you gotta get more tackles to pledge
more money. I know, I was bummed I had to
miss those two games, so I made sure it was
(01:04:28):
back this last week. But yeah, people can can go
online and pledge with me. But trying to raise money
for the Houston Food Bank for everything that happened to Houston.
I'm pledging fifty dollars for every tackle, and people can
go on and pledge anywhere from you know, a dollar
or to fifty dollars a hundred dollars whatever, whatever they want. Okay,
so you guys play on Christmas Eve, you're flying home
(01:04:48):
that night. Um, I don't. I don't know if your bran.
I don't think she's let listening. We're not on in
l A unless she's listened on serious x M. What
are you getting here? I'm not telling you what I'm
getting there. But I have worked to due to the
holidays every year because I have Christmas and her birthday
is four days later, on the twenty nine. So, but
the good news is I'm already all taking care of.
(01:05:11):
I've got Christmas and her birthday take care of. I'm
all set, all right, you're you're all set? How are
you on names? I'm I got like three or four.
If you want to send me any recommendations, I'm taking
them right now for the next couple of months, I guess. Okay,
is it gonna be like some strong like thour is
gonna be like some big meat head meatball name? Or
(01:05:31):
is it? Because I always advise people on this, like
take like Wolfgang, and take like Bob and meet somewhere
in the middle, right, like you don't want it to
be so far out there, like who is it his
kid's name is Apple, Like, you don't want that. Gwyneth
Paltrow's name kids named Apple, right and being at in
Los Angeles? Now, you don't want an Apple, right, you
don't want to uh, you don't want good dough to
(01:05:52):
be your kid's name. But if you get somewhere kind
of in the middle of the two, is that what
you're thinking? A you're thinking last names, his first names, like,
give me well, I'm not going with what I think.
It's kind of trendy right now, is what my brother did.
His two kids names are are Henry and Hugh Lincoln.
So the's like critics strong names. Um, so I'm not
going that route. My wife cares about like how it sounds,
(01:06:15):
and I don't know the aesthetic is the name. I
kind of tend that maybe having names a little bit
more meaning, maybe family names or they mean something, some
purpose behind it. So we're gonna try to find a
balance in there. Okay, last thing Charlie Brown Christmas grins
that stole Christmas or um uh Chris Christmas Christmas story Elf? Okay,
(01:06:37):
we'll throw Elf in there as well. Four Christmas viewing.
Go are you asking me what's my favorite. No, just yeah, yeah,
one four four el else my favorite, so no, no,
I mean just ranked them one to three four so
alpha one. I love that alphabet one. What are the
what are the other one of the other one Christmas story, right,
(01:06:57):
that's the that's the one where the Okay, there's a Grinch,
this stole Christmas, the original one, not the Jim Carey one,
the cartoon one. And then Charlie Brown Christmas which the
animation is not good Christmas story. Then Charlie Brown and
the Grin. All right, listen, man, I'm really happy, uh,
mostly for your life, right, like your life is great.
(01:07:20):
And then also you're on an awesome football team and
you're back healthy, so that's also good. You're gonna have
the merriest of Christmas. Good luck in Tennessee and we'll
talk to you real soon. Talk all right. That's Connor
borrowin joining us on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Online car
shopping can be confusing, not anymore. With True Price from
True Card, now you can know the exact price you'll

(01:07:41):
more confident car buying experience. Dan, if you were going
to suggest a name for Connor Barwin's sons child you
have anything off the top of your because a lot
of times, like you don't have kids, A lot of
times people don't have kids have the best ideas because
those of us who have kids were like, ah, any ideas.
I would just try to stay away from the same
(01:08:01):
initial I'm not a fan of that where everybody's every
kid is the same initiatives. I think, though, do you
think I didn't suggested this to him, like if it
was like Blake Barrowin, but he had If he did,
he had another B in the middle. He could be
like triple be like big ball of bread. I don't
be funny, and maybe he could have his kids sponsor
my big baller bread. I don't know. He should name
his son LaVar ball. That's how I think he should go.
(01:08:24):
That would be my suggestion. Would you go LaVar, would
you gole Angelo, would you go LaMelo? Or would you
go Alonzo? Right now? You go Alonzo in l A.
He's the one ball who everybody likes. I think all
of them are hybrid names, so I think I would
probably just stick with LaVar, then a Alonzo. I think
it actually Blake Bortles barrowin there you go. That would
be good as well. That would be how about Charles
(01:08:46):
Charles Barwin theory, I like it. I like it. He
could go with Aaron, but that was taken by a
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers placed on injured reserve today, ending
his season. In explaining the move to reporters, head coach
Mike McCarthy says that Rodgers took some hits in week
fifteen and that he was sore, so now he won't
(01:09:07):
play at all for the rest of the season. Packers
were eliminated from the playoffs with Atlanta's win over the Buccaneers,
or from postseason contention, I should say with the Falcons
win last night. Rogers returned for that Carolina game from
a broken color bone. Steelers said coach Mike Thomlins is
wide receiver Antonio Brown gonna miss their game on Christmas
against the Texans because of his torn calf muscle. Not
much of a surprise, as multiple reports a Brown won't
(01:09:31):
play again this regular season. Florida Atlantic has given head
football coach Lane Kiffin a ten year contract extension. Kiffin
in the Owl's face accord of the Book of ratone ball. Tonight,
Washington State head coach Mike Leach received a five year,
twenty million dollar contract extension from the school Lakers Center.
Brook Lopez out three weeks with a sprained ankle. Doug
suffered the injury and last night's overtime loss to the
(01:09:51):
Golden State Warriors. Alright, appreciate, I'll appreciate all that. Appreciate it. Uh,
I got, I got plenty of names to recommend for him,
tons of them. We got interrupted earlier on the Aaron
Rodgers News. Uh. But um, I'll give you my top
ten NBA players. Uh, modern day NBA players coming up,
(01:10:16):
Modern day NBA players. So Ramo's give me your Christmas.
So you got Christmas Eve? Like, what's the Ramos family traditions?
We usually go to my mother in law's house, spend
the night there, wake up in the morning for the
kids and our cousins, and have open up presents. Then
we go to my sister's house later in the day
(01:10:36):
and open up presence with my family. All right, that's
a lot of like, So how do you do you know,
do you buy the presents for your kids or is
your wife handle all the part present by Uh? Suzanne
will handle that part of the fun. Yes, since she's
really good at knowing what the kids and I know
what the kids want to but it minds all Star
Wars and eventually it has to just stop, so she
(01:10:58):
has she goes around the different pervances. That's what they
really what they really want, So yeah, she does all
that stuff. It's funny you bring up Star Wars. I
was just accosted in the hallway. I almost feel like
maybe I should be, um, what's my man's name? When
does the morning show that he doesn't want anybody stopping
him or talking to him. Steve Harvey, I almost need
(01:11:19):
to Steve Harvey things Smith. Ryan Smith is like, oh
do you like did you like Star Wars? I was
like I loved it? And he's like, oh, the holes
in the plot and the where did this come from? Like, dude,
it's a movie a long long, far far away, long
long ago. Like we're making this up as we go, dude,
(01:11:43):
Like you know, we just He's just so devastated by
the fact that there was holes in the plot, Like
there's holes in lots of plots, Like they only have
so much time. You gotta edit things you ever seen
movies when they're not edited, you're like, oh, where's the
editor cut this thing up? That James Cameron came out
later and says the Titanic didn't actually sink the actually
(01:12:05):
way he did it in the movie, So so the
things aren't done exactly the right way sometimes. Wait, wait,
the Titanic didn't sink the way he did in the movie. Yeah,
it's it sunk a different way. They found out later
on it didn't the way he did in the movie
where like broken half or something. He wasn't exactly the
right way. So yeah, that wasn't exactly correct, even though
he meticulously went through and tried to find it the
(01:12:27):
exact way it sank, and then he found out later
it wasn't exactly that way. But that's okay. We don't
know it. Get like, get the gist. I got the
gist of it. I was like, yeah, it's I wasn't
like I was gonna go like, look, you have to
know exactly how the Titanic sunk exactly. I want to
know which fiddle payer player was the last one playing
the fiddle on the Titanic. Yes, Dan Buyer. I was
(01:12:47):
just gonna say, maybe they can make up for it
in Titanic too. Maybe that could be a way that
maybe James Cameron could the return or something. Did you
like the movie Titanic? I did, I actually did. And
I don't like real you don't like movies, and that's
that's why I don't see a lot of them. I'm not.
I'm just I'm not a big fan. I'm not into
(01:13:07):
the but I did like Titanic, and within being three
hours is saying something, Well, uh, I like movies. I
like movies a lot. I like them a lot better
than books. And I like books. I like good book,
but a book takes a long time. All right, my son,
(01:13:29):
he just read super Fudge. You remember Superfudge, Judy Bloom.
He loved it. Just read super flug Fudge. He's like, Dad,
that was awesome. I go, well, you know, you should
have read I'm not Bad as you should have read
Tales of Fourth Grade Dropout, which is the first of
the super Fudgers. There's Tales of Fourth Kick drop Out.
There's Fudge and they're super Fudge. He actually read super
Fudge first, so he's gonna go back from me there too,
is there movies of them? It was like, no, interesting,
(01:13:50):
like that they were never made. Everything's made a new
movie except for super Fudgers, ever giving away these ideas
to hold. I know I was gonna say, ding ding dingy. Yeah. Um,
all right, Look, I'm put together a top ten list
of modern day NBA players to give you my thoughts
on Kobe Bryant and why there's such infatuation with a
very polarizing former superstar who had not one but two
(01:14:13):
numbers retired last night. Enough and I'll argue with myself

for youa Doug Outlip Show, Fox Sports Radio will he
(01:14:57):
still look with us? Right, he is still alive, that
is correct. How old do you think Willis? I would
say in his mid seventies. I think eighties. You think eighties? Okay, Um,
that guys smoked a lot of weed in his life.
We're gonna get to that. Eight four, eighty four years old.
(01:15:18):
And he smoked a lot of weeds, a lot of weed,
right like, he was well ahead of this legalization of
thing before anybody else was. He was in the game
way before that started. He was born in Abbott, Texas,
in nineteen thirty three. Willie Nelson favorite Willie Nelson's song ramos,
Well there's only one, really, there's I mean, there's a
couple of cigar I like on the road again. You
(01:15:41):
just can't wait to get on the road again. Life
I love is making music with my friends. Um, mama,
don't let your babies grow out to be cowboys. That's
that's that's the song. And now all right, here's a
weird plot twist. Normally, we play for you a portion
of a previous radio show on the Premier Family Fox
(01:16:02):
Sports Radio family of radio shows, whether it's First Things,
First TV Show, Undisputed TV Show, or Clay Travis's out
kicked the coverage radio show or the Dan Patrick Show
radio show, or Colin Cowhard radio TV simulcast. We'd like
to find something cool play it back. In this case,
Colin had an outstanding, really charming, very good looking, i'd say,
(01:16:25):
dashing guest on earlier today to talk about Kobe Bryant's
dual jersey retirement. And here was his top ten modern
day NBA players. So I have Michael Jordan number one.
I have Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Cream Abdul Jabbar, Bill Russell, Lebron,
Jerry West, Kevin Durant, Like we're not having discussions up there.
(01:16:46):
Plus remember Durant's second in the NBA and blocks now
he's playing, And and Durant played his best against the
best last year in the NBA. I still think you
have to have shock. They're not great regular season because
he played his way in shape. Could our you a
key more than shack, but shacks certainly more valuable league history.
And and he went to Miami one another championship. I
think he did hurt some of his all time resume
(01:17:08):
by going chasing rings and chasing checks. And I think
Isaiah Thomas, you know look, because he iced out Michael
Jordan's in the in Jordan's first NBA All Star Game.
Jordan kept him up the Dream Team. But during the
peak of the NBA, during the peak of the Eastern Conference,
Isaiah Thomas went back to back titles. He was tough
at both ends. He was a great score, a great leader,
a great player. I would put him right there. Yeah,
(01:17:31):
my problem with my own list is, like I was
really torn too. I put Kobe in there, but like
Shack was the best player on the first three championship teams,
and though Kobe was the best player on his last
two championship teams, like a lot of things kind of
had to go his way. And uh, he didn't play
great in the NBA Finals. He shot the ball a
(01:17:52):
lot like he was the Alpha, but he wasn't a
great Alpha. Um, I would probably if I revisited, put
him right there. At like end, mccoby was an eleven
time first team All NBA player. He was a tremendous score.
He was fearless defensively, fearless offensively. But like, look, we
want to tell the entire story. He did quit on
his team against Phoenix. He did want to be traded
(01:18:15):
he he did do the him or me with shock
and they traded away Shack, right. He you know, he
couldn't play for anybody, couldn't win for anybody except for
Phil Jackson Um and late in his career, no one
wanted to play with him because he was unwilling to
be a secondary or even you know, third he was
he would never do what Dwyane Wade is doing right
(01:18:38):
now with Lebron James, and so I do think that
takes some of the luster off his start. Look to me,
he is the Derek Jeter of the Lakers, right that
they won, and he gets credit for being clutch, but
a little bit more credit than he really deserves. Much
like Derek Jeter. Like look, Derek Jeter was a two
(01:18:59):
seventy five hitter and a two in the playoffs. Same guy.
He made some great plays, we didn't make all the
great plays. And you know, Derek Jeter would not have
won five World Series if not for Marion Rivera, not
for the incredible starting pitching. He wouldn't won his last
World Series not for Alex Rodriguez. And I think you
could say the same for for Kobe like not for
(01:19:19):
Ron Artest and Pau Gasol and Lamarrowdom like I don't
Kobe would have won those last two titles. Derek Fisher
and some of the miracle shots he had, Robert big Shot, Bob,
Robert Ory like great role players. So do I think
am I willing to consider him the closest thing to
Jordan's since Jordan's. Absolutely I'm totally cool with that, more
(01:19:42):
so than Tracey McGrady, who couldn't get out of the
first round, than Vince Carter, who seems to want to
play forever right, Like he's the closest thing to Jordan's,
but there's a sizeable gap between him and Jordan's as
opposed to Lebron being the closest thing to Magic Johnson,
many of the Lebron does better than Magic Johnson. I
(01:20:02):
can't say that about Kobe. So my updated list, um uh,
my updated list I did kind of modern era basketball players.
I mean, I just I don't know what you do
with Bill Russell, right, I don't know what you do
with Jerry West, who is the only guy to ever
be the m v P. The NBA Finals team didn't
(01:20:24):
win it. So my modern day every updated list, I
would probably put Jordan's Lebron, then Magic, then Bird, then Shack,
then Kareem, and still put Kareem. I thought, I know five,
he was starting to age kind of quickly there. I
put Kobe below Kareem Kareem six mb A, six time
(01:20:46):
m b A, m v P, six NBA titles. I
put Kevin Durant right in that list, ahead of Duncan
and then Jason Kidd, and then there's Kevin Garnett's, the
Paul Pierces, the Steve Nash two time m VP, Steph
Curry two time m v P. What do you do
with James Harden when he becomes an m v P
if he wins the title? Chemalija one won two titles,
never had to go through Jordan to win those titles.
(01:21:10):
So I don't know. Kobe is great, uh Laker fans,
I think remember him more fondly because he hung around
when Shaq did not. He won them their title and
then they're bad at the end of the run, and
he's kind of gotten a pass for it. They've always
blamed Jim Buss for that really bad contract. But Kobe
could have said, like, hey, I don't need the money,
like let's spread around. It doesn't matter how much talent
(01:21:34):
you have, everyone has to be pulling in the same direction.
Don't believe me. Most talented team in the NFL is dysfunctional.
What up? But she's not gotta live show? Fox Sports
Radio didn't love Kobe getting two jerseys retired last night, Like,
just pick a number, and that's the one we're gonna retire,
right like, And it's it's not it's not just that
they retired two numbers. It's that they hung two different
(01:21:56):
banners up there, like and this is the one thing
that was awesome about There's two arenas that are like
this in Los Angeles. Okay, I don't think Staples Center
is the greatest arena in the NBA, right, I mean,
it's cool, but it's really cool because in downtown l A.
Live that used to be skid row, used to be
(01:22:17):
the worst part of l A. Now it's among the
most expensive parts, great restaurants, cool area, complete revamp, Amazing
what that part of Los Angeles become. But there's two
are two arenas in Los Angeles which are eerily similar.
Polly Pavilion or u C l A Place has a
similar effect to um the Staples Center. When you walk
in you see the illuminated jerseys and staples, and you
(01:22:38):
understand you're walking in there's Mike in George first Grade Center. Really,
in NBA history, there's Wilt, there's Jabbar, There's Jerry West,
there's Elgin Baylor, there's Um, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Worthy Jersey,
James Worthy, Big Game, James James Worthy, there's Shock and
(01:23:02):
now there's and there's Chick Heern, there's chick her Um
and so like, it's not like if Kobe was played
for the Clippers. Remember there was a time when Kobe
almost played for the Clippers. If Kobe played for the Clippers,
well then you give him to jersey, you give five jerseys,
(01:23:24):
you give however made jerseys you want, right Like, it's
Kobe Bryant, it's the Clippers. But what you're saying is
that both of those numbers are equal to, or as
good as, or better then all of those other all
time greats. Can we just take one second and chick
(01:23:47):
her and Like, I don't love the announced broadcasters being
recognized up there with players because they didn't actually put
a ball through a hoop. On the other hand, you
ever say here here the word charity stripe chick hern
boo birds, chick hern picked his pocket, chick hern airball
that didn't draw iron, chick hern Um. You ever heard
(01:24:09):
the expression, what is it like? People dressed his empty seats?
Chick hern Um. There was when you throw up a prayer.
That's chick Heern. You can uh what else was there?
There was Alley Oop, also chick hern. And he did
(01:24:33):
the popcorn machine like you know, a shot fake of
the guy jumps up. That's chick hern in the popcorn machine.
And then mustard comes off the hot dog guys too fancy.
That was chick her And then his most famous was
and this you had to live in Los Angeles growing up,
when the game was essentially intact, he would say, and Ramos,
tell me, if I get this one wrong right, put
(01:24:55):
this game in the refrigerator, the doors closed, the lights
are out, the eggs are cool, and the utters getting
a hart and the jellos jiggling right correct, Like that
was chick Herne. So rarely do I say an announcer
blongs up there with the all time great players who
actually put the ball in the basket or stop the
ball from going in the basket. Chick Hern is the exception.
So my issue I don't take umbrage with with Kobe
(01:25:18):
Bryant having Jersey retired. But he's got he gets two numbers.
Everybody else gets one. But that's kind of the Kobe thing,
Like we give him a pass for that, we give
him a pass for the ridiculous volume of shots he
would take. It's just it's a weird thing. It's a
weird fan player relationship and an inability to contextualize just
(01:25:42):
what he was as a player. Weird thing, all right. Um,
I don't love press conferences all the time, you know, like,
let's go to the press conference. Some press conferences more
interesting than us. I don't love postgame interviews. I have
(01:26:03):
come to really enjoy watching the Pittsburgh Steelers postgame interviews
because Ben Roethlisberger does this thing to where he he's
never really been all that much about about we as
much as about me, all right, Like he's disagreed with
play calls before and told people about it. And so
(01:26:25):
when the Pittsburgh Steelers and are we talked about this
a bunch yesterday. I think it's a terrible interpretation of
the rule. What they're doing with you catch you break
the plane why do you have to then go to
the ground after you've already made the football move right one, two,
and then you stretch the football? Like why I whyted
to do that? I don't know, because the rules say so.
(01:26:48):
Just the rule. It's a bad rule. So the Steelers
could have and maybe should have won that game. They
had two reviews, plenty of time, like two hundred seconds
to figure out what they want to do in these
situations and all. Yeah, by the way, part of what
you coached late in the season, we talked about this
yesterday is what you do in these specific situations. So
(01:27:10):
um Ben Roethlisberger went on k d K, which is
a local radio station, and he once again trying to
re explain what happened at the end of Sunday night's game.
So I was telling clock clock, clocks were getting set,
and then it came through my headset then don't clock it.
Run a play, run a play. And in that moment,
(01:27:31):
as I'm thinking in my head, do I spike it?
Doing not? I wish I listen to my gut. Now, obviously,
in hindsight, I'll take the blame for the interception at
the end of the game. You know, I wish that
I would have, you know, maybe mentioned that to coach said, hey,
there's nothing got brought up. You know, hindsight on a
lot of situations here at the end, I wished to
what I I wish it would have called to plays.
I wish you would have had too ready to go.
(01:27:51):
Mhm um, I wish we had it would have had
too ready to go. Is blaming the coaches. I want
to clock that they didn't is blaming the coach. And yeah,
I'll take credit for the interception. Not taking credit for
the route okay, which he called, which he also could
have adjusted, or which he could have not thrown. All
of that. That's also blaming the coaches. Like he's like,
(01:28:14):
I admit it. They did it. That's what he did,
all right. So let'sten to Mike tom Lynne had a
press conference really today and see what he had to
say about Big Ben. There's no script for those moments.
There's always latitude, and professional latitude, particularly that goes with
being a veteran quarterback. In those circumstances, he is on
the field, He is inside the helmet and on the
field with those guys. He has a feel of what's
(01:28:36):
transpiring on the field that we on the sideline and
then the booth do not have. So that's just normal
operating procedure. We call plays all the time that he
may change at the line of scrimmage based on game
circumstances or or or what he sees. Yeah, so yeah,
like we called plays, but he he runs his own
play all the time. It calls his own number all
the time. Right, Like he's been roun the burger. This
(01:29:02):
is not Landry Jones up there going like hey, I
got it right. Ben Roethlinisburger. This guy that was like
I might want to retire, Like, no, man, don't retire.
We love you. So here's my kind of assessment of it.
I've been trying to figure out all season long. Top
of the Steelers because on paper, and I know games
(01:29:22):
aren't playing on paper, they played inside television sets. On paper,
Steelers are the best talent in the NFL. Before the
Shaesy or injury even they had great talent. Defensive backfields improved,
Ryan Cheesier, incredibly young linebacker, uh t j watt Um
do they got guys all over Cam Heyward. And then
(01:29:46):
on offense, I think Jesse James is pretty good at
tight end for them, wide receivers all over the place,
Levy on Bell arguably or maybe inarguably the best running
back in the league, and Antonio Brown his fifth he's
the first wide receiver with five straight one hundred catch seasons.
I know he was hurt. At the point is j Smith,
(01:30:07):
shooter has been good. They're good on special teams, they're
good on offense, they're good on defense. Pouncing might be
the best center in the NFL, and he's healthy. Like
they have everything, and yet they've allowed the Browns to
hang around them, the Colts to hang around them, the Ravens,
a team that shouldn't have been closed, the Bengals, like
all these games were needlessly close. And the only thing
(01:30:29):
I can gander, the only easy, smart, simple takeaway is well,
that's why they're not better. And you're like, dug their
eleven and three, you're not paying attention. No, I'm I'm
paying attention. That is an eleven and three, twelve and
two team, and they're very they're very close. They're one
rule away or one you know, interception a way from
being twelve and two and have the best record in
(01:30:50):
the a f C. But if you really watch the steelers.
You're a little disappointed by how disjointed they are at times.
There's your explanation when things go wrong. Adversity. Adversity does
one thing to all companies, to all relationships, to all teams.
(01:31:13):
Adversity exposes, right, it exposes I mean, look, you want
you want to know if she's in it for the
long haul. It's not when you're on the set of
the Bachelor or Bachelorette. Rights when you haven't seen each
other in a month and something goes wrong in in
(01:31:34):
your relationship, how do you then kind of talk through
it and work through it? That's how you know, right,
she don't want to talk about it, she shuts down,
And you're somebody who likes to talk things out, like
that's the relationship is gonna last. You work for somebody
in my profession, you talked for three hours a day,
two days a year, two five days year. You're gonna
(01:31:54):
say something stupid or something's gonna come out as you
didn't mean to come out. How's your boss handa list
you come down and call? Are you a bleep an idiot?
Or does he go like what do you say? Why?
Just say? What were you thinking? All? Right? Well, let's
take what you just did there and not do that again, right,
or does he go like, hey, dude, take a week
off and if you do it again, you're fired. And
by the way that you know you need to like
(01:32:16):
people will fly off at the handle and don't have
a reasonable sensibility about who you are, what you are.
They're not fully invested. That's the relationship is not gonna work.
And if if and they're not, it's not like this
is the first year of Tomlin, the first year of
Big Ben. This has been going on for a long time.
But if you want to know why Ben Roethlisberger is
(01:32:38):
not just beloved, that's why. Right Brady, Brady might be boring,
But you and and Brady may have may have cussed
out Josh McDaniel two weeks ago or three weeks ago
on the sideline, but if you ever come out and
heard him after he played poorly, say like, yeah, you know,
(01:33:01):
I through this interception, but man with us play calls terrible? Right,
what is Bill doing over there? He would never do that.
Aaron Rodgers Packers should have run the ball his first
game back. The running the ball, well, that's what they
did while he was out Aaron Rodgers first thing out
of his mouth was, I just didn't play that well.
(01:33:23):
I mean, you're allowed to be a mouth content behind
closed doors in your quarterback rooms, But in front of
the media are you doing If your check engine light
comes on, don't let your car suffer. Head to auto
zone today. The auto zone fixed finder can check it
on the spot for free. It could be something serious,
(01:33:46):
it could be something simple like a loose gas cap.
Get in the zone. Auto Zone. Garrett Selick joins the show,
and the other brents that, yeah, garrettson for selling. Oh yeah,
can I ask him? Not about him? About Jimmy g
Jimmy Garoppolo, Jimmy Football? Is it as good as it looks?
(01:34:10):
Are happy days on the way In San fran we
discuss next car shopping can be confusing with terms like
dealer price, list price, an invoice price. True car shows
what other people paid for the car you want, so
you can recognize a good price when you're ready to
buy a new or used car. Visit True Car and
they enjoy more confident car buying experience. All right, let's
(01:34:35):
have the kid discussion here. Um Bad Sand is a
great Christmas movie. Nightmare Before Christmas. Great Christmas movie, Love Actually,
Love Actually Good Christmas. My wife's favorite is Christmas Vacation
Home Alone? Uh, Home Alone twenty seven years ago, Home
Alone twenty seven years ago, h LF obviously good one Scrooged.
(01:35:00):
Gremlins is actually a Christmas movie. Gremlins is just as
much of a Christmas movie as die Hard is right.
Occurred during the Christmas season. Um, there's the original Dr Seuss,
How the Green Stool Christmas? And there's the remake in
two thousand with Jim Carrey Charlie Brown. Christmas was in
nine to the Good One, Miracle on thirty four Straight,
(01:35:21):
Not My not My Bag. Garrett Sealk joins us on
the Doug Gallip Show. Movie guy, Uh, Netflix Guy, Amazon
Prime Guy? What kind of guy? Are you more of
a currently have you? What was the last thing you
binged on? Oh? Uh? How did you really binge on it?
(01:35:42):
I only watched like the first episode. But Black Mirror?
What is it? Black wed? Black Mirror? Is it good?
It's weird, It's very weird. Um it kind of it
kind of shows. I guess it's like a very artistic
um uh rendering of twilight Zone? Right? Is it kind
(01:36:07):
of like twilight Zone. Twilight Zone. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I
kind of like that, but it's a yeah black black mirror. Okay,
I have not do you like? I don't. I struggled
to sleep after things like that, like are you good like?
And then I was actually explained this to my wife.
I have three kids. Daughters are eleven, little boys eight.
(01:36:29):
Now I can't watch like even uh SUV lawn Order SUV,
Like I can't watch Crimes against Women anymore? Like, oh,
I don't have the stommach forward. Any trouble sleeping after it?
Uh No, no, I uh not really. Uh I definitely
want to watch that show kids, It's probably not the
most appropriate show. Um yeah, I watched. I watched two
(01:36:51):
episodes of Bloodline or three episodes of Bloodline. I liked it,
but then I just kind of I just kind of
fell off. I thought it was pretty good. Garrett's out
joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show here on Far
Sports Radio. Of course, football family dudes an absolute stud
and you're playing with it with a new quarterback. When
you guys traded for Jimmy Garoppolo, I want your honest
what was your honest reaction when people your friends are
(01:37:14):
texting you and you start talking about having Jimmy garoppolo.
You know, I was excited. Um, you know when when
Tom was out for me a couple of games and
he was in, I thought he played really well. Um,
you know, other than that, I didn't know much about him. Um,
I was excited to get to meet him. Um it's
no more on a personal uh you know basis and
(01:37:34):
as a teammate. And uh, he isn't disappointed at all.
So I think he's a great guy. Okay, So when
was the moment that you're like, all right, this is
it's interesting to where all right, we got our guy,
like he's he's the guy. When when was that? Did
you remember the moment? Uh? You know what, I would
say probably the first game that he that he played
(01:37:58):
and he played the Bears. Um, I thought he you know,
as soon as we got rolling, um just kind of
who he was in the hubble and and uh um
just the place he was kind of making. I was like,
all right, this dude's for real. Let dud's legit. You know,
like in practice, you know, it's different. You know you
can see a guy, um, but you don't know till
(01:38:20):
you know game time and he showed up, and that's
kind of what I knew. When did you come up
with the idea of selling time? I did not come
up with that. Uh there's a couple of people claiming
they came up with it, But I think, you know Shipp,
Kyle Shanahan, I think he can end up coming up
with it. He said it one day and in our
(01:38:42):
team meeting, and then it just kind of stuck. Why
did he come up with it in team meeting? Uh? Well,
I just made a couple of plays, you know, back
to back, and uh, I don't know, you just said
selling time, and then you know, guys start the guys
liked it, and uh, they just started rolling with it.
Now you become kind of that guy, right even I
think even Jimmy Garoppolo said, like, you become that guy,
(01:39:05):
that third, third down guy, like all of a sudden
to go from I don't want to say a journeyman whatever,
but to becoming kind of celic time, Like all right,
we gotta play what's what? What's that kind of metamorphosis
kind of transformation like for you, you know, I I
want the team to be able to count on me,
you know, in you know, important situations. Um, no, I
(01:39:25):
want to do that that and so you know, you know,
guys always just struck around like, um, it's like the
boost button uh in blitz. Um. I love, But I
just I just I don't really think of it, um
as anything you know special. I just honestly, I'm just uh,
(01:39:45):
a guy just out there trying to do my job
and trying to give everybody the best that I have.
There's a lot there's a lot of people who have
raved about Kyle Shanahan's offense, some that he couldn't always use.
With our G three, we saw it help lead the
Alkins to the Super Bowl last year. What what have
you found to be the difference in Kyle's offense as
(01:40:05):
opposed to other offenses you've operated in. Um, hey, that's
a tough question. Um. You know, I think Kyle, um,
he kind of looks at the game as like a
chess match, you know. Um. And maybe I didn't notice
it another offense that I've been in. UM, but Kyle,
(01:40:26):
you know I feel like he just, um, he approaches
it like a chess match, you know, like this guy
makes this move like he's always like two steps ahead
of everybody. That's what I feel like he is um
and it's it's cool, you know, seeing that. I think
he's a very smart, very smart coach. You know, there
there there is though. Sometimes you come in as a
(01:40:46):
young coach and you've got some and you guys have
a lot of young players too, but you've got an
old kind of veterans. You know, they're like, who the
hell is this guy? You know, he thinks he's super smart.
Like how is he handled the fact that he's a
young coach and he has a reputation comes from a
ball family, Like, how's he how how does he handle
all that so that the older guys do respect him
without him without a sense of kind of arrogance and entitlement. Well,
(01:41:08):
you just got to be a good leader. You have
to have those leadership qualities. And uh, that's exactly what
Kyle has. Um. You can't you can't come in front
of you know, a bunch of guys didn't expect to UM,
you know, to have their respect right off the bat.
And I think he has built that up, you know,
over two or camp Um. But you know, he's he's
(01:41:31):
just the type of guy when he first came in, Um,
he just had those leadership and commanding qualities that everybody's
just kind of just you know, accepted and and gravitated
toward right away. UM. And I think that's, you know,
what makes a good coach. Garrett Selk, joining us in
the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio, got
more touchdown receptions this year than any other point in
his career. I don't know if you're paying attention, but
(01:41:52):
the Niners have actually won three in a row, one
four of their last five. You do, really, you guys
do realize that this is a bad thing, right, Like
it's good to win, but you're hurting your draft position.
What are you guys doing winning these games? Um? You know,
we're not thinking about stuff like that. UM. Winning is
the only thing that matters to us right now. UM.
(01:42:13):
And we're I think we're still trying to figure out,
you know, who we are as a team. And uh,
you know now that you know we've got another component,
you know, Jimmy add to the team. UM. You know,
we're still trying to figure this all out. And the
only way you can figure that out is, UM, by
everybody just given everything, you know, given it all they
(01:42:36):
got UM in these games. UM, and you know who
you want to win. We're tired, you know, we're tired
of losing, you know, sort of nine games, and uh yeah,
it's just I mean, no one likes to lose, so
it's you. We have to win. That's I mean, that's
that's the only answer. No, I know, I know, I know,
(01:42:56):
Like like we sit here as fans were like, dude,
what are they doing? But can else you find somebody
who likes to lose and you found yourself a losing
football player. Garrett sel Garrett Selk joining US tight end
San Francisco forty Niners. We've seen now Jesse James, We've
seen Austin Sefari and Jenkins. We see many players that
play essentially your position pass catching uh kind of hybrid
(01:43:17):
type of wide receiver tight end player. We've seen you, guys,
uh be on the wrong side of this rule where
you have to complete the process. So obviously let's start
with we know what the rule is. How does that
change what you do when you catch a football as
opposed to when you maybe first came to the league,
when you're first playing the position. Uh um, well, I mean, my, my,
(01:43:40):
the way my coach always teaches is, um, you know,
catch the ball first. Don't don't worry about you know,
the yard second, UM, because it doesn't matter. The yards
don't matter if you don't catch the ball. UM, like
Jesse James, I mean he, I mean, that's really unfortunate. UM,
how that'll you know worked. I don't necessarily agree with it.
(01:44:03):
I in my mind, that's a touchdown in in in
my eyes. UM, but you know, the rules are the rules. UM.
You know in my position, I you know, some guys
are different. I probably wouldn't have done that. I would
have you know, tucked the ball in, UM and then
like you know, through my body over the line. That's good.
(01:44:26):
I like that. So you you catch it and you
just kind of then you like almost jumped backwards to
get over the line. But then while cradling the football. Yeah,
you see too many of these, UM, too many things
like this happening. You know, guys extending the ball for
the pylon and then it gets knocked out. UM. You know,
you're the only time you ever do something like that
in this situation is a sort down and you need
(01:44:47):
to score. That's in my mind, that's the only time
you ever do something like that. Other times you gotta
protect the ball. Um. You know, I mean that that
was unfortunate, you know, Um, but you know, rules are rules. Rules,
Rules are rules. Uh. Garrett Selik joining us on the
Doug Gottlip Show. You've been around, uh, with the with
the Niners since two thousand twelve, so you've seen, um
(01:45:10):
kind of the peak and now the tailing off of
the Seahawks to see what the Rams did to be
in this division to play those teams twice and look,
I know that the Rams, even when they had no offense,
which we're still playing the Seahawks close beat the Seahawks
even going back to last year at home, but they
were up forty to nothing on the Seahawks. How do
(01:45:31):
you guys in that division react to the sudden change
atop the division? UM? I mean I think there's something.
You know, there's something wrong. You know, when when a
team gets beat that bad. Um, something's not not messing um.
Whatever that may be, you know, players, coaches, whatever it is,
something must not be going well. Because UM, when I
(01:45:56):
look at a team like that, I don't I don't
ever picture you know that getting beat like that. UM.
But hey, any given Sunday, you know that can happen. Um,
so yeah, I have no idea. I don't I don't
know what's going on. Last thing, selling, you had six kids, right,
six kids in your family selling selling. There's five of
us first five of us, five kids. Okay, so um,
(01:46:16):
that's the best, a big that's a big Christmas. That's
a lot of presents. Yeah, best present you ever got
Christmas time? Uh, I would say a go kart. We
got a go cart one year and one go card.
There's five kids, one go card? No we got we
got two of them. Yeah, And so they were They're
(01:46:37):
more than just go cards. They are almost like kind
of like doom buggies and we were just you know,
just crush them through the snow and that those We
had a lot of fun in those when we were kids.
Who was better you? You were Brent at racing the
go cards? Oh me? He he would always get we
have races and not always one and and you have
So I'm saying I was reckless, but I said, hey,
rubbin's racing. Rubbing. Rubbing is racing, all right? So are
(01:47:01):
you giving any you're giving any of these? Uh? I
know you do a ton with the forty Niners Youth
Foundation program. You're giving any of those kids, um go carts. Uh,
that would that would be stepping up to a whole
of level. You're like, yeah, I was thinking more like
video games, but go cards at a different level. Yeah,
that's a yeah, that's a little bit uh beyond my
(01:47:23):
release right now. All right, well you listen, keep catching,
keep stick close to Garoppolo. I don't think he's going
anywhere for a while. He's gonna get paid and become
his like go to celic time guy, come up with
a you got you already got a cool touchdown dance
and maybe yeah, yeah you need to you need to
have something where like everybody on the offense points to
(01:47:45):
their watch, their their wristwatch, right, so like everybody knows.
And then you look up in the crowd and the
entire crowd, which is I know it's growing at Levi's.
You're starting to get a good comb crowd. Everybody starts
pointing to the wrist. Everybody knows. It's selling time. See.
That would be proud participation would be That would be
great because so often times it's a bunch of you
guys doing it down there. Like now everybody knows, excellic
(01:48:07):
time you catch it and you'd be like, what time
is it, and everybody points to their watch. It's cellic time.
You see, we just did Garrett se Merry Christmas, dude,
congrats on the success. All right, that's Garrett Selk joining us.
Good dude, great football family. Cincinnati lal um uh Lasal
High School. It's too great high school football programs. There
(01:48:28):
Mueller High School, Mueller High School, and there's LaSalle High School.
I think I think, um, you know, Connor Barrowin played
for the University of Cincinnati. I think, But I don't think.
I think he grew up in Michigan. He didn't grow
up in somebody who's an NFL player and he grew
up Michigan. He's a Jesuit guy. Hold on, we'll get
(01:48:53):
to Dann Bayer one second. Well, maybe we'll get to
Dan Buyer right now. Day when he got no I
was supposed to read something mouto zone. I think it's
it's all good, It's all good. Aaron Rodgers isn't getting
the call this weekend. In fact, he's done for the season,
Packers placing Rogers on injured reserve at coach Mike McCarthy
(01:49:16):
saying today sick some hits and was sore. Of course,
the Packers probably sore that they're out of playoff contention,
eliminated with Atlanta's win over Tampa Bay last night. So
Brett Hundley starts Saturday at home against the Minnesota Vikings.
There will be no rematch of Aaron Rodgers against Anthony
Barr until at least like, uh, like, look, how would
(01:49:36):
you that's a Brett Hunley right, like that is not
exactly a resounding Oh wait, this game doesn't matter at all.
Oh yeah, yeah, hey Brett, you can start now, you
can you know you can start now. No, we got you,
We got your back, totally support you, dude. Yeah, absolutely,
we have a lot of confidence in you. We got
(01:49:57):
a lot of confidence, a lot of confidence. We just
don't want to get our actual quarterback killed. I don't
know if the Broncos have any confidence in any of
their quarterbacks. They don't even know they're gonna start this
Sunday against the Washington Redskin. Of course, no it doesn't.
But Trevor Simeon is done for the season with the
shoulder injury. John Elway telling Orange and Blue seven sixty
in Denver that the decision is coming later this week.
Really they want to see if Paxton Lynch is healthy
(01:50:18):
enough to play. Otherwise Broncos Wilder likely to get this start.
Orange and Blue seven sixty is a I believe the
Broncos owned part of the radio station. I got a
buddy who works there. They literally do Broncos. What are
they gonna do on the first or second of January? Doug,
You know it's easier to cover a loser than a winner, right, Yes,
but at some point saying we need a quarterback is
(01:50:40):
like not a good radio. Well, that's that's true. I
think of the topics though, will be when everything is
going well, it's difficult to be like everybody's just like, yeah,
things are great. But when things are going bad, everybody
seems to have their own solution. I think they'll be
all right. I think that these little dips can always
can always help in the city. At least you get
you get two years for you go to three years
(01:51:01):
and now you got a trend, you got a serious
Probably Lane Kiffin's got a contract extension, so he's not
under contract for the next ten years at f A.
You technically it's a six year extension. Reworking though the
four deals that four years he was already under contract.
It's eight ten year extension. Kiffing in the Owls facing
Akron to Night in the Book of Ras to Own Ball,
Mike Leach is getting a contract extension five years, twenty
million dollars. And how about this from baseball yesterday free
(01:51:23):
agent picture you Darvish confirmed he met with the Chicago Cubs.
Now fan Ragged Sports is saying today Darvish is meeting
with the world champion Houston Astros. Ah, that would be
something else. Did you see Hunter Henry On I r
that lacerated kidney? Yeah, I told you guys yesterday. My
guys were the Chargers, Like, there's zero chance he's playing
(01:51:43):
with the last ready kid, I would hope. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I don't. Anthony Lynne just said yesterday that you know,
I have to see his status. So that's all that
we could report. Yeah, No, I mean, I they privately knew,
but they needed I think it was said a paperwork
deal to where they signed a guard Brett Boyko or something.
(01:52:05):
So um Now it's on Antonio Gates to um refined,
he refined his youth. But man, that's a major, major,
major loss for a team that still has some slim
playoff hopes, albeit very very slim. Um, this is a
(01:52:26):
hard one. What's it gonna take for us to buy
into Blake portals? I want to read you something. This
is from Adam Schefter's account over the last month. Blake
Bortles is three and oh, he's first in the NFL
and yards per attempts. They're not dinking and duncan. He
(01:52:46):
has seven touchdown stone receptions. His QBR is eight five.
He's played his best football at the most important time
of the year. Um. Now, it should be pointed out
that the three teams they've beaten so far in the
month of December, Colts terrible, Seahawks not a playoff team,
and they beat the hell out of him. Texans not
(01:53:08):
a playoff team. So he hasn't done it against the
best the best. But they do have a win over
the Chargers and a win over the Steelers, and if
the Ravens snuck in a win over the Ravens. Blake
Bortles last three games completing seventy one of his passes,
seven touchdowns, no interception. So the question is like, what
does he have to do to make you believe? And
(01:53:31):
I think it's interesting that we we Is it fair
to say, hey, if they get behind the playoffs, I
don't think Blake Bortles can bring them back. But what
you have to you have to understand is you're changing
the bar where you where you set the bar at right,
This is like, well, you know, to qualify for States,
(01:53:54):
you gotta high jump five ft and then dude high
jumps five feet without even trying, Like no, no, no, no,
we said six and six ft six inches, Like wait what,
because that's what we've done to Blake Portles. Like I
don't think anybody thought Blake Bortles was a great quarterback
come in the season. But before the season, people didn't
even think he was a good quarterback. It was anybody
(01:54:18):
but Blake Bortles. They should sign Kaepernick in the preseason,
Chad Henny should start in the precinct, Like do you
remember how bad Blake Bortles was in the preseason? So
I like, I think it's really important. I think contexts
is just interesting. I just do. And this is a
(01:54:42):
guy that was struggling to throw strikes in the preseason.
He was a ratic. He threw to nobody. He seemed
lost in the offense, They're like, oh boy, they got
a problem right. The first game of the year, they
beat the Houston Texans seven. Do you have a yard?
Three four? One hundred and twenty five yards eleven of
(01:55:04):
twenty one. Then they lose the Tennessee thirty seven sixteen.
He throws two interceptions. Then he plays great against Baltimore.
He does for a hundred and forty five fifteen of
of thirty five against the Jets and their two and two.
They were three and three when they beat the Pittsburgh Steers,
he only threw the ball fourteen times the entire game,
(01:55:25):
ninety five yards. So if your thing is, hey, I
still don't believe that Blake Bortles is a great quarterback,
you're more than entitled to that opinion. That's a fair
opinion and a half. If you don't think he's an
above average quarterback, you're entitled that opinion. There's nothing I
cannot say that you are absolutely wrong. What I can
tell you is that there were people that thought Blake
(01:55:47):
Bortles at some point was gonna go line up over
the guard and try and take a snap there because
he was so lost at quarterback. And you know what,
to those people. He's proving you Wrong's not terrible, He's fine. Fine.
Is it a recruiting violation for showing up on TV?
I'll explain next in the Doug Gotlip Show, Doug Got
(01:56:08):
Lip Show, Fox Sports Radio. Was this rolmost very popular
now right the country world? Luke Brian Luke Bryan. Oh,
he's that popularly more? I mean they kind of I
don't think so. Uh, he's fallen off the harbor artime.
He's not one a hard times but um, you know
there's a there's kind of a new uh you know,
(01:56:34):
like look, Brett Young is still is a new young
guy who's really good. Obviously, Eric Church it's got some
got some stuff that's that's pretty good. Old Dominion is
a personal favorite of mine. But there's also kind of
a style of almost like rap country music, you know,
which is Sam Hunt. You don't know Sam Hunt at all?
Kind of an interesting mix though, right, rap in country music? Yeah? Yeah,
(01:56:58):
but you everybody like a back road that's like the
kind of the signature song of the style. Um, I'm
friends with the friends with people who are related to
the guys at Midland Midlands a pretty hot country band, right.
Lead singer used to be a surfer and a model.
It's pretty surfer model country star. Like that's pretty good, right,
(01:57:19):
it's pretty good. Anyway. I do have this auto zone read.
See I told you guys that had an auto zone
read to get to. If it's your check engine light
comes on, don't let your car suffer. Ahead to auto
zone today. The auto fixed finder tool can check it
out on the spot for free. Could be something serious
or something simple like a loose gas cap. Get in
(01:57:39):
the zone auto zone. Do you guys know anything about cars?
I can change a tire, I can change oil. I
can obviously fill up with gas. That was the easy one. Uh.
Air filter I can do so air filter, tires, oil, gas,
you guys do anybody pretty good? And I can wash
(01:58:02):
a car, and I'm very good at vacuuming out a car.
There is a there's a trick I think, like getting
in those seats, like in those crevices of the seats right,
and then you you hit the seats to get any
of the extra little crumbs to pop up. These are
all things are important. The press buyer, all right, want
(01:58:24):
I got for me? Dan by Luke Brian. While I
may like one song of his, I thought he was
in the Blake Shelton. How in the world did this
person blow up camp? I can get Kenny Chesney, I
can get Jason Alden. I understand. I never understood the
Blake Shelton, Luke Bryant phenomenon. Dude, Blake Shelton got now
(01:58:45):
he's is he married or they just again? I will repeat,
I never understood Blake Shelton is the sexiest man alive.
Ben what the hell? People Magazine? Yeah, and I like
a sam On song, but that trying to be Drake
in Country is just not working in my mind. Aaron
Rodgers and working anymore of the season. Placed on injured
(01:59:06):
reserve today by the Green Bay Packers. Yeah, came back
from one game. Game didn't go well, and now like, hey, Brett,
we want you this good news is watch to start.
Bad news is we clearly don't care about the game
because we can't go to the playoffs. He's playing high
shoulder on the first play, we go back shoulder. He's
playing lower shoulder on the last play. Well go over
the top of Okay, good to know. Hey, we're talking music.
(01:59:27):
Kendrick Lamar will be the halftime performer for the college
football playoff championship game in Atlanta. He'll be performing at
Centennial Park near Mercedies Bend Stadium, So I'll be outside
the park. Yeah, outside, Yes, he won't be won't be
a true Okay, he's I mean super super talented. You
know what the College Fooball Playoff is gonna run into
is good pustion. The country is not gonna watch right
(01:59:47):
West Coast, Midwest, Northeast, in the South. Gonna be huge.
Otherwise could be bad. I just said to rhyme music,
there is zero buzz right now with the college football playoff.
I know we're a little ways away, but still. One
the reasons Ohio State apparently stopped recruiting a five star
prospect by the name of Micah Parsons was because of
a rules and fraction involving Parsons visiting the ESPN College
(02:00:09):
Game Day set when they were broadcasting live in Columbus
for the Oklahoma game this season. They said it was
an a benefit that not every other student would get.
That's done. That's done. They stopped recruiting him. Well, there
there were other options other reasons as well, but Ohio
State did that. Sounds like excuses, not not. They did
self report though, and then they had to go through
(02:00:31):
you know, their training appliance. Yes, absolutely, Lane Kiffin gets
a contract extension at Florida Atlantic. So does Mike Leach
at Washington State. I give if Lane kiffn was gonna
leave Florid Atlantic. It's not gonna be over money. It's
you know, there's nothing they can pay him. He's gonna
go to more glamorous shob if he can get one.
I don't understand. I understand Mike and Mike Leach. I'm
(02:00:53):
sure this was agreed to when he talked to Tennessee.
He was just a negotiating ploy. But schools always take
the bait on the nego shading plays. They always do
Final one. Doug Rangers pitcher Martine Perez could miss the
start of the season after he fell on his ranch
when he was startled by a bull. This on the
heels of Perez missing time last year when he pinched
his non non throwing thumb in a hotel room door
(02:01:15):
on his way to dinner. Yeah, I don't believe either
those two stories load a bull. I think there's bull
on both of those two stories too. Peter King's gonna
join us tomorrow. We'll ask him which coaches are gonna
get fired. It seems like a lot where I know
we're a couple of weeks away. Will ask him with
to how the legal react to Aaron Rodgers essentially getting benched,
(02:01:37):
you know, because it's better to not play him and lose.
Peter King joins us. Tomorrow, this is Doug out Lip Show,
Fox Sports Radio,
