I'm fired up for today. Derwin James is gonna join us,
who many people have raided as the number one rookie
playing in the National Football League and has one Charger
source told me he didn't even know he's doing half
the time because he's only been in the league for
six seven weeks. We're gonna take you up to San Jose,

(01:48):
San Santa Clarita, where the Raiders are getting ready to
take on Santa Clara's. That's Senate Santa Clarita is where
where several of the crew members live. Santa Clara is
where the new football stadium is to for an areas,
Santa Clarita, Southern California, Santa Clara outside of San Jose.
It's really where Stanford is close to Pala Auto, and
that's where the Niners call home Niners Raiders. Tonight or

(02:11):
this afternoon, depending on where you are. Thursday Night Football,

I wonder C. J. Bethard's gonna play tonight, and uh,
you can go ahead and proves your brain to find
out who his backup is in San Francisco. Edward or

(02:31):
will join us upcoming in fifteen minutes, we'll find out
what reaction has been like from Dallas as they've added
Amari Cooper and uh, Christina Pinkell, Jonas, Mark Slayer with
the joinas Derwin James. Great show, Great show. There's a
sit down tonight on the Thursday night game which Howie Long,
Hall of Fame player, historically great Raider of course, uh,

(02:56):
when the lead analysts in the NFL and Fox's coverage
since Fox Scott the National Football League, here's a sit
down between John Gruden and Howie Long, and it's funny.
I maybe I'm the only guy and I'm not a
I'm not a Raider fan. I like to make fun
of the Raiders. I've I've I got called in the

(03:16):
carpet by the Raiders front office. This is several incarnations
ago because I said then what I say now, which is,
you know, Raiders gotta be really careful once playing Sunday
night games because you know, guys, their fans that get
weekend furlough gotta check back in, right. So I but
I'm fully aware of the fact that the Raiders haven't

(03:37):
been a really good team, you know, an elite team
since John Gruden left. I haven't We're talking seventies, sixteen,
seventeen years since they've been an elite team. They made
the playoffs two years ago, but they made it with
one of the worst defenses, and they made it frankly
with Jack del Rio going for two, going for it

(03:57):
on fourth down, taking a lot of risks and seeing
and reward. But you know, let's also be honest, that
was not a great year in the a f C West,
and that was year in which I think ultimately they
kind of came back down to earth last year and
he lost his job. So John Gruden is tanking. He's

(04:18):
chapter eleven NG, he's reorganizing this thing. He's trying to
get it to it has long sustained success. And some
people think, well, its Las Vegas or some buildings has
a long term deal. Like no, I just think that's
a better way to do business is to get it
so that You're not gonna win one year, You're gonna
win for a bunch of years. It's the two two
bulls the top of the you know, looking down at
the past. You're saying, we could run down there, or

(04:41):
the little one says we could run down there, and
the older one says, let's walk. Here's Jon Gruden a
portion of the interview tonight on Fox, sitting down with
Howie Long. I got a cell phone, just like you
and everybody else, and I get a lot of phone
calls from people that are dying to come and play here.
I'm just telling you, they're dying to play for the

(05:01):
Raids and to have salary cap space, and to have
a chance to talk to the people that you really
want to wear the silver and black, the guys, you
really want to wear the silver and black and represent
this team. That's exciting. Yeah, that that part I'm not
truly buying into. But I think he's in salesman mode
because he realizes he's got sixty nine million in in

(05:26):
cap space at least this upcoming year. You know, do
do guys really want to play for the Raiders? I
don't think so. Um, even the allure of playing in Vegas.
I think there's some of that. You know, Vegas will
be once you're in Nevada. There's no state income tax,
and there are plenty of places where you can live

(05:47):
and have a family and live outside the facility and
you'll be fine. And for the younger guys, does you
know it's it's actually a perfect set up for many
of the younger guys because you can live close and
there's always a place to grab a great meal and
have a night out, or you can you can stay
in like the weather is good. I think the Vegas
thing is an absolute no brainer. They'll have filled stadiums.

(06:08):
I think they'll have some of the they'll have some
of the charger stuff where you have fans of other teams.
But Vegas has been a Raiders town for the last
twenty years, maybe even beyond, and so I don't think
that's that big a change. It just guys would prefer
to play there as opposed to playing in some of
these other kind of destinating or at least they the
image of what they think would be like to play
in Vegas is better than the image of what they

(06:29):
think that would be like to play in some of
these other destinations. But but I think you have to
look past the rhetoric. You have to look past the
hurt feelings of people who he leap frogged and bought broadcasting.
They are upset about it, the leap frogdon coaching, they're
upset about it. And look at the substance of what
they're doing. They have three first round picks this upcoming year.

(06:52):
One is their's, which will be one of the top
five picks. One is uh that of the Dallas Cowboys,
which will looks like it will be at least a
mid feet and the same with the Chicago Bears. Three
first round picks. Even if you only hit on one,
which is a low rate, if you hit on two
and then you have two next year. And oh yeah,
by the way, if he doesn't get who he wants

(07:15):
or he doesn't think there's a game changing player there,
one first can become a couple of seconds, or can
become a future first like that's what Bill, But the
game Bill Belichick has played for years. You have to
look past the huff and bluster. You have to look
past the salesman stuff and try and get to what
actually is going on. This is no different than politics.

(07:37):
It's not different than politics. I think some of the
things coming out politically from from from the president and
from people who have supported the president like that some
fringe politics stuff that's grows to me, grows to me.
But the essence of what he's doing, some of the
stuff does in fact make sense, and the essence of

(07:58):
what it doesn't mean that they're gonna executed properly, Right,
Like the idea of what Trump wanted to do, whether
he drains the swamp and refills it with other swamp creatures.
It was something that we thought we needed as a country,
which is an outsider in politics. Right, wasn't that kind
of the thing that drew so many of you to
vote for him? And don't sit here and say like, well,

(08:19):
I didn't vote for him. Somebody did. Sixty million of
you did, and and it's most of it's not him
the person. Most of it's the you know, I'm just
ready for something different. And so if you actually look
at the execution, some of it is, in fact some
of the different. Some of its politics is just being
played with a different voice in a different face. The
same thing is happening with Gruden. Gruden could be a

(08:41):
polarizing figure, not because of things he said when he
was a broadcaster, but the fact that he didn't actually
say all that much in terms of what he who
he didn't like, you had to kind of read between
the lines. All that being said, forget the huff and
bluff stir, forget the guys want to play for the

(09:03):
silver and black commitment to excellence, and he's freed up
coming to a bunch of cast space. He's got a
bunch of draft picks, like this is the Philadelphia seventies
sixers all over again. And the seventy sixers missed on
some and hit on some and they haven't won an
NBA championship yet, they haven't even gotten to a conference
finals yet. But they do have Simmons, they do have

(09:24):
Embiid and uh they were on some level players and
had cap space for Lebron James. And they'll have cast
space going forward for this upcoming free agency bananas as well.
And they're gonna be good for the next ten years.
Why because they're gonna have those two and add something
to it, which is all Gruten's trying to do. So
we get caught up in the face making, We get

(09:45):
caught up in the promises, We get caught up in
the polarization of the commitment to excellence and Raiders and whatever.
Guys want to play for the Silver. I'm likeack, dudes
want to play wherever the biggest paycheck is, and hopefully
if they have a place to where they feel like
they want to live of and somewhere that they can
um they can call home. They can they can call home.

(10:08):
But a lot of it is how much money. How
much money they can make and while they play, and
then when they win, and then where they live. If
you can check most of those boxes, you got a chance,
and they got a chance. So I'm not as I'm
not gonna sit here and sell the Gurden stock. I'm not.
I'm still buying Gruden stock, even though he probably screwed

(10:29):
up the draft, even though he signed some older pieces,
even though it didn't appear that tanking was his primary goal.
And this is a plan B. It's a plan that's worked.
Remember sixty million dollars in cap space this upcoming year,
and that's without any cuts, and they can still make
that they can still make in the off season. So

(10:52):
it stays to say that that number is gonna be
even higher. The salary cap is gonna go up and
they have a ton of space and they got three
first round draft pick. Would you prefer them to be
far more competitive and fight to not make the playoffs
with with the Denver Broncos because they're not better than
the Chargers and they're not better than the Chiefs, and
nothing he could have done this year would have made

(11:14):
him better than the Chargers in the Chiefs. Be sure
to catch live editions so the Doug Dot Leaps Show
weekdays in noon eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio and the I Heart Radio app. Derrick Rose was
people thought he was gonna quit bat last two years
with the Nicks, remember he went a wall and then
with the Calves last year he went a wall, Like

(11:37):
he just left the team, just completely left the team.
That that is accurate, isn't it? Yes? Yes, not under
sold at all. Yeah. So with with that in mind, um,
he then he there was a video of him like
working out at like an l A fitness and you're like, dude,
Derrick Rose, you're not supposed to be an el A
fitness and he's playing for you know, a million, two
million dollars. This is an m v P of the league. Like, man,

(11:58):
it's somebody needs to tap him on the shoulder and
tell him it's over, and apparently they don't. It's not over.
He had fifty five zero and it was a close
game and he was great, not good great. Remember this
is the game all anybody was talking about yesterday in
regards to the Timberwolves, and some of this is our
faultest Nash because Jimmy Butler, like, now is he not

(12:21):
with not playing in a home game? But he wasn't
even at the arena. That was all anybody was talking about.
And what happened is, Um, he dropped fifty points. There's
a couple of things to think about, kind of like
Carmelo Anthony his style of being attack guard, a midrange
pull up guy and a high volume guy, low percentage

(12:43):
guy from three. The league has kind of passed him
by a little bit, although he made four of seven
threes last night. Um, you also remember just how incredibly
talented he is. I mean, this is a six one
ish guard who was m v P the league. Doesn't
mean that he was the best player in the league,
but had a great season with the Bulls. You know,
kind of like when you know, I never thought Steph

(13:04):
was a better player than Lebron when he got it,
or or or James Harden was the best player in Lead,
but they had the best season. He was the m
v P of the league, and he was playing for
like a million two million dollars and when a wall
in the past two years because of all of the injuries.
Like this is a butt of all jokes because if
you went in a suit last night on Halloween, you
could have gone as a Derrick Rose playoff uniform. Like

(13:26):
that joke actually worked for years. And in a close
contested game he drops fifty. There's so many different takeaways
from it, but one I just you know it's it's
he has an incredible amount of ability. But you don't
make it at that level, at that size, from where

(13:48):
he comes from unless you have a will to succeed
that few have. You just you don't make it like that.
And so I guess I should be surprised, but I'm
not really because that will when when when when Energized
obviously still exists, and everyone if you don't love a comeback,

(14:08):
if you don't love that story with all the bad
coming out of Minnesota, that story is so damn good,
So good, and he's crying. He's talking about I worked
his ass off, your damn right. In two thousand he
averaged twenty a game. In two thousand and ten, two

(14:28):
thousand eleven, he averaged twenty five games, seven and a half, assists,
four rebounds, only shot three from two. But but remember
this was a guy who this was, you know, like
that was kind of the last year before shooting high
volume in percentage three point shooting became in vogue, before
kind of Steph Curry took over the league. But he

(14:52):
was amazing, amazing last night. And if he can consistently
knock down a jump shot, I don't think you'll get
that out of him, that out of him all the time.
But what a what a comeback. This guy went a
wall from his past two teams, the Knicks and the Bulls,
I mean the Knicks and the Calves. Remember the Calves
were in the playoffs last year and they had gotten

(15:14):
to the playoffs. After jettisoning him to the Timberwolves, like,
oh well, maybe TIBs knows what to do with him.
And then in the off season, he was like working
out in l a fitness Like is that Derrick Crows?
That's the saddest thing ever. I mean, do you remember
Ramos is the big, big movie, guys. I'm not even
gonna ask buyer. Buyer remembers every piece of Milwaukee Buck trivia,

(15:37):
but doesn't do you remember is it five Heartbeats? Is
that what it was? Five heart Yes? Do you remember
what happened to his character? It was no, it wasn't.
He wasn't the one. There was one guy in the
Five Heartbeats who had a drug problem and uh they
went on to success and they ran into him and
he was like in an alleyway and he was he

(15:57):
was starting to sing. It was Eddie de Kang, right,
Michael Wright played the character, remember Eddie, And he's like nice,
like this out wish range drop be like, man, that's
really sad. That's what Derreck Rose was. Derek was like, oh, man,
Derek ros still playing. That's so sweet. That's so cute.
Somebody needs to tell him. And then he drops fifty

(16:20):
in the NBA game fifty. Be sure to catch live editions.
So the doug Got Leap Show week days at noon
eastern three pm Pacific. From the moment he fell to
the charges, they thought they had something special and He's
done nothing to disappoint Derwin James joining us in the
Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Derwin, you
made some impactful plays in season. You're starting to get

(16:42):
respect from around the league, not just from from fans,
but people who really educated analysts who cover league. What's
it like to be for people this earlier in your
career to pointing out how well you're playing? Oh, that's
great because I wanted to come in, you know, coming
into this league with demonset, you know, proven what type
of there I am. And like I said, I just
been working hard every day and just getting better. It

(17:04):
feels like they're they're still discovering new ways to use you, right, Like, uh,
you know, you're they're putting the line of scrimmage, They're
putting in coverage, they're covering, you're covering the slot, you're
covering out wide. What what's what's the one way in
which you haven't been used yet to which you wish
they would use you. I feel like I've been using
every way that I love. Um, only position I haven't

(17:24):
played yet with a nose guard, but every everything else
I haven't played. So UM, I'm pretty pretty happy with
the situation of man here in l A to be
around a lot of good teammates and great coaches. Yeah,
I mean, and think about how well you guys have
played and you don't even have Bosa yet, right Like
there there has to be a sense of we're pretty
good and we're going to get a great player back

(17:45):
pretty soon. That has to build some sort of excitement
in the building, doesn't it. Yeah, that's exciting because I mean,
if you look at what Boas is doing, I mean,
he's he's one of the top passwords in the league.
So just getting a guy back, uh like that that's
able to create pressure and also play good against the run.
I feel like that's just gonna help help free me
up some them and help for a lot of other
guys up around the defense too. Yeah, but that's gonna

(18:07):
take away from some of your sacks. Did you realize that,
right like all this all this you get in in
the back, that that's gonna you get better? Yeah? Um, okay,
so you're you're What was London like for you? Man?
London was nice on them. It was my first time
actually traveling out of the country just to go over
there in that environment, just saying all the fans how
happy they were to see us, uh, and you know

(18:28):
they were just supporting their team. Um. When you look
at the stand, you see every team in Jersey, so
that was kind of different. But you know, there was
loud and it was a great environment to play it.
You guys broke out the powdered blues. Have you figured
out why you guys don't play in those powder blues
every game? I don't know, man, those are those are
my favorite uniforms honestly. Um, but like I said, we've
got a lot of five colors and the part of

(18:49):
blue winding on twice this year. So all right, so
you guys, you guys have the lead, they come down
and score and they're going for two. It's against the Titans.
It's a week go on Sunday. What was your reaction
when you see there they're gonna go for two and
go for the win. They really find the trial like this.
That was my first thought and then um, the second
thought was let's get off the field and win the game.

(19:11):
That made it even much better. We don't have to
go to ot. We get ended right here with the defense.
We want next for no the way and m we
got a flag on the first time, and then we
had to come up and do it again, so you
know that that made it even more fun. Yeah, but
you guys are on the field for thirty sixpence. I
thought they should have gone to overtime. Did you feel
like your defense was tired? Now? I feel like I

(19:31):
feel like man was football. But I feel like they
were just putting together some good draws and they was
getting some critical first downs on third and short thirty.
We just gotta had to get off the foot on
third down. But I feel like, um, that was playing
well as an offense. That was moving the ball. Mario,
it was moving the ball, and um, like I said,
we we we got to stop that we needed when
the county. Did you go back home during your weekend? Yeah,

(19:52):
I went back to Florida, seeing my seeing my family
and stuff is good. Did you You didn't you didn't
watch that Clemson game, did you? Because I was actually
went to the game. Um, well, you couldn't turn it
off TV, Like, what what's that like to that's you
guys have a proud program. Obviously last year when when
DeAndre got hurt that that really hurts your season and
the Jimbo stuff. But I mean, dude, that thing was

(20:14):
that got out of hand. It was closed for a
minute and then it got out in the hand and hurry,
what's your How far away are they from getting it
back where it needs to be. I just feel like
they just need to jim more um more as a team.
I don't feel like the coaching is bad or the
players are. But I mean they got the form over
that win. But it's just like putting everything together and
building team chemistry and just doing all the little stuff

(20:36):
and executing and knowing the situation being better situation football.
But um, like I said, they still got time. I mean,
that's the first year together. Um, so we'll see what
happens in the future. Derwin James Starr for the l
A Chargers joining us in the Doug Gotlieb Show headed
to Seattle take on the twelve man. What are your
thoughts on the Seahawks defense? Uh, seahaw defenses, I meane

(20:56):
Seahawks offense. I'm I'm I'm sorry, Seahawks offense. I'm I'm
I'm off my bad. That's when I say they got
a good defense too. No, Uh, the offense offenses are
really good. I mean Russell Wilson. I mean that speaks
for himself. He carries the offense and he guys, he
guys guys around around him. That's playing hard and I
feel like they're doing a great job right now. Um

(21:17):
with what they're doing. They're running the ball very well. Yeah,
they got they got Chris Carson's a beast. They got
some other dudes as well. You know what's interesting about
Russell is it does feel like when he's improvising, when
he's rolling out, that's almost when he's at his best,
kind of setting his feet on the move. How do
you plan how do you plan for that? Right? Because
part of it is you want to pressure a guy.
No one's is good when they're under pressure. On the

(21:39):
other hand, did the improvis improvisation that's that's when he
makes those kind of devastating plays. Uh. It's kind of
very similar to what we faced last week with Mariota.
Um with with those type of guys getting outside of
the pockets, that that's when they're the most dangerous because
they can run and pick up first down, they can
throw stin plays with their legs. So, um, we're getting
used to quarterbacks like this, and um, this is what

(22:01):
the league kind of what the league coming too a
little bit with these mobile quarterbacks a little bit, but
it's it's it's one of it's a good challenge we
ready for. What is the feeling around the facility? And
I can only tell you living kind of in the area,
a lot of people like want to buy in, but
you're like, yeah, the Chargers, they're gonna find a way
to lose games. But around the league, it's like, look,
they're five and two, haven't had boasts, don't have a

(22:23):
hunter Henry, and yet you look at the schedule, there's
some wins that be had. What's give me the honest
sense when you walk into the building every day, what's
the feeling that you get? Just what you say? People
always down on us, Um, We've always done the dog
and you know they always say the same same old charge,
the same mold Chargers. So I just say, the attitude
around here is a hunger. Um. I mean, every guy

(22:43):
is hungry, and everybody's you know, trying to change that
opinion with what people feel. Um. So we're just going
to continue to play hard and just keep putting it
on tape on Sundays. Has it? Has it? Uh? I
don't know. It feels like it's been so natural for you.
I wonder if there's been ever been a moment where
you look around be like, damn, I made it and
I'm really good in this league. Has there been a

(23:03):
moment where it's settled in how how fast this thing
has happened for it? Yeah, it's been a couple of
moments in the game. Well, I've just been like, well,
I made a good play, made a good talk on
and I'll just be like, man, I've been this what
I've been dreaming of as since a little kids, and
this is what I've seen myself doing. And now when
I'm finally doing is like, man, life's great. Can you

(23:24):
name all the Philip Rivers children? No? I cannot. All right,
he's got eight like that. That's a lot. You gotta
play a lot of football. And people be like, well
he started to the games the kid, what you go?
Did you go out for Halloween? No? I mean I

(23:46):
stayed in the house. A couple of teammates came over. Well,
we just just stayed at the house. Your scary movie
You're a scary movie guy right now? No, I don't
really watch movies like that. Man, Your TV show, Got
you your Thrones, Guy's mad And I'm a madd And guy. Man,
do you play as yourself? Are you always the chargers
in madd And Tell the truth? No, I'm not always
the charging I do like a fantasy fantasy team. Who's

(24:10):
your quarter who's your quarterback? Ultimate team? I got cam
right now? Yeah? I figured you. I figured you were
a cam guy. Right. You want to have a run
pass the option there? Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know I
like that. I need it. I need to be able
to get it, get a first down on my legs
or who's your wide receiver? Robert Susy will be j
a guy outshine dress for you. I got antique, all right,

(24:32):
give me one guy who you've checked against, checked up
against that you're like, damn, that dude is a lot
better than I thought. Like, you're like, man I had
because you know, I get it gets when you know.
We we're used to in the media, we're used to
the big names. But I'm sure there's been a guy
you've either prepared for on tape or or lined up
against that you had no idea how good he was.
Um the Titan Kittle from step Frank, he was. He

(24:56):
was really good. Um. He kind of shocked him a
little bit, but he was really good. Um. And like
I say, some of the other times, I win again.

Let's welcome in Mark slayra three time Super Bowl champion
NFL on Fox Analyst. The Raiders are clearly playing for

(25:40):
next year, kind of Chapter eleven right where they're reorganizing.
What do you think of the plan? The plan is,
you know, you've got three first round picks this year
to the following year, tons of cap space. Do you
like the plan? I mean, I like players, Um, you know,
I like guys that have proven them selves. I like

(26:01):
known commodities, versus unknown commodities and doug If you look
at their last what thirteen fourteen years of first round
graph choices, it's littered with dudes who can't play, guys
who aren't in the league, or guys who were in
the league as backups. The two guys that have proven
themselves as you know, really good players, as Pro Bowl
players are now ones in Chicago and ones in Dallas. So, um,

(26:26):
the plan is great if you're cash trapped, and the
plan is great if you're really good at ticking, you know,
at drafting guys and developing those guys. But um, you know,
I mean, that's that's the issue. And I come from
a world. I played for the Redskins. I played for
Joe Gibbs and and and at that time, the Redskins

(26:46):
were all about guys who can play. Give me a
known commodity. Because this draft is still at this point,
as much research as we do, as much poking and
proud and as much you know as we do at
the combine and every other place, and all the interviews
you set up, or what's what what are the percent
failure rated in the first round, the round where you
spend the majority of your time studying guys. It's still

(27:08):
a crapshoot. What about Amari Cooper, He's going to join
the Dallas Cowboys. How much in your opinion, martially, we're
joining us on Fox Sports Radio. How much in your
opinion does he change that offense? Well, I mean, which
Amara Cooper? Am I getting? Am I getting? You know,
the guy that played the first couple of years and
played really well or the guys played the last couple
of years under two different coordinators. Um. You know, the

(27:31):
issue that you get into from a from a standpoint
of productivity with players is if you're constantly changing what
you're asking them to do, and constantly changing the coaching
points and asking them to do things and putting in
the positions where maybe they're not so comfortable. Um, it's
hard to get consistent production. So you know, it just depends.

(27:52):
I mean, I think that number one, I think the
kid can play. Um. I think the last year, in
the last couple of years have been very frustrating for
him to at least, But I think the kid can play.
And you know, Scott Linahan is gonna have to put
them in a great position to have success. And obviously, um,
Dak Prescott's gonna have to be good. But the bottom
line to me with the with the Dallas Cowboys is

(28:14):
they're predicated on running the ball and control the play
action control line of scrimmagetion. And that's been their major
pitfall this year is they haven't been as good as
they've been in the past when you're talking about the
way a team has structured, the way they were set up,
and they just haven't been as efficient in that part
of their game. And therefore, you know, their quarterback has
struggled because that's what he needs. So you know, if

(28:36):
you can tell me, if you can tell me all
of a sudden, they're gonna fix their offensive line problems
and really set up the flash and so you can
hit people with double moves and and you can get
the one on one matchups to one on one outside
matchups that you'd like with Cooper Um, then I'll tell
you they'll have success with him. If they can't do that, Um,
they're bound to continue to kind of fumble around offensively.

(28:56):
They did fire their offensive line coach, is that what
was wrong with them? I mean, I know Havis Frederick's
been out, but I mean as the offensive line, the
coaching the problem. I don't think it's the coaching. I
think it's it's the talent. Um. You know. I mean
Collins is a good player, but he's really an inside player.
He's playing right tackle. Um. You mentioned Frederick, he's the
guy that makes it all go and he's been out

(29:18):
with you know, with his autoimmune situation. The kid they
drafted to play left guard, frankly hasn't played very well. Um.
And and that's you know, for Barcelona, being a young player.
So you know, you can fire the coach and I
get that. Um, you know you can, you can do
those things. But the bottom line is it really comes

(29:38):
down to who you have playing and how well they're playing.
And um, and they just haven't. I just don't think
they have the same type of the same caliber players,
UM right now as they're currently constructed. Mark Layer at
the NFL on Fox Analyst joining us in the Doug
Otlip Show of Fox Sports Radio Sunday night, we have
Brady taken on Aaron Rodger. I can only give you

(30:01):
one quarterback. Who do you pick? Um? Wow, I'll take
Brady um one. You know, the body of work, um,
being able to win multiple ways, there's no question about
that Um being able to bring his team back in
fourth quarters with deficits, what he's been able to do,

(30:23):
and Um, you know, he's just he's just a legend.
You know. If you're just talking about pure talent, pure
arm talent, pure athleticism, and there's no question it's Rogers,
but all the intangible things, all the things that he's
been able to accomplish. Um, I would take Brady. Plus
I kind of have a man crush on him. So, um,
that's that's the direction I'm going. You got that swell,

(30:45):
he's got that swell cleft in his chin. I mean,
he is just that dude. Is that dudes a freak?
You know It's funny I'm doing a game a week
ago or so and ask somebody about Brady or two
weeks ago Um one of his former teammates, and he said,
this guy, it's his lifestyle because I learned so much
about playing the game from the lifestyle standpoint. He goes,

(31:06):
when Tom Brady gets done with the game, So he
gets done Monday night playing Buffalo. They win in Buffalo,
they get another you know, another victory. Then he gets
on the bus and everybody else is kind of celebrating
it's a win, you know, nice to get away for
a minute. Brady sits on the bus with his iPad
out studying next week's opponent on the way home to

(31:29):
the plane. On the bus on the way home from
the stadium to the plane, he's studying film of the
next week's opponent that dedicated that dude is and there's
a there's a reason that he's he's so successful. Let
me take it to Green Bay where they we knew
they were gonna gonna trade. Were they gonna make it?
Make a trade with a guy who misses the block

(31:52):
and then brings the ball out of the end zone
right in time. Montgomery, but the ha ha, Clinton Dick's
trade called a lot of people off guard. Now apparently
they're gonna move Tremont Williams from corner to safety. How
big a child, how difficult to transition? Do you think
that's gonna be? Well, I think I mean it's it's
obviously there's a lot of guys that have played both
over the course of their career. I'm not sure how

(32:13):
much Safety Williams has played, but that's always one of
those things where they transition and guys take some reps.
In practice, I think the biggest thing for me it
does is not pre snap, it's post snap. In that position,
it's safety at free safety. Your post snap communication has
got to be create. Your post snap recognition has got

(32:34):
to be rank. And you know, you have to take
excellent angles from a coverage not only coverage standpoint, but
a tackling standpoint. And you being the last line of defense,
you know, you have to understand when you got a
rally up, when you have to be able to um
rallying up there. And the depth that you get towards
the line of scrimmage constricts holes. So the quicker you

(32:57):
recognize that stuff and the quicker you get the line
of scre image, the less amount that back or that
you know that receiver who's running the ball has to
have to get himself open or has you know, area
to make a move. And so um, those are the
things in regards to in regards to playing that position.

(33:20):
So I think it's a much tougher transition. And I
will tell you just you know, from my perspective, I
moved playing six years in Washington right guard. I moved
to left guard, and it was completely formed to me
after six years UM, and I didn't feel comfortable. It
took me a whole season to feel comfortable playing there,

(33:40):
to feel like I've figured out the nuance of flipping
sides and playing that position. So, you know, everybody just
thinks it's an easy transition, but it's never as easy
as people like to make it out to be. Marsh
Layer at three times Super Bowl champion NFL on Fox
Analysts joining us. You live and work and have a
radio show in Denver, DA. Marius Thomas sent to Houston.

(34:01):
But you know, everything I've been told and I've read
is this was about freeing up wraps for Courtland Sutton.
Is Courtland Sutton just better and that's why you can
move on from Damarius Thomas or or is there something
else to play? No, I think it's I think there's
two things that are in play. Courtland Sutton deserves the reps.
Courtland Sutton is an absolute freak show and he has

(34:22):
been impressive since day one through the O T A
S through training camp. He is just I mean, he
is jaw dropping talented, and they wanted to get him,
you know, more opportunities, UM a lot of and talking
to John Elway about it, he would tell you, And
as he told me, he's like, listen, the kid is
still raw. There are times running routes that he's not

(34:42):
on the right depth, he cuts off the wrong foot,
but he is so gifted athletically and he's such a
hard worker. Is that we're just need to get him
more and more opportunities, as many opportunities we can get
because this kid is going to be a superstar and
he is a freak show, Doug, I mean just athletically
is absolutely off the chain. So that was one of

(35:03):
the reasons, there's no lie that they felt like they
needed to get him these opportunities. The other thing is
Damarius Thomas can cost them fourteen million dollars on the
cap next year and and frankly, he's that he's not
worth that anymore. His production um does not doesn't match
that number. And so they understand, I think more than anything.
They won't tell you this, but they understand from a

(35:24):
depth standpoint, there's still a ways away from being a
competitive team in the a f C West for having
a chance to win that division. So clearing up that
cap space and understanding they still have a lot of
work to do from a depth standpoint along their offensive
line of scrimmage and some other positions as well. Um
that that's the reason that movie is made, because they

(35:45):
know in the future he doesn't fit in and and
if they could clear that cap number up and yet
still play some of their young players. Um, that's gonna
be the best for them in the long run. For
next season. It feels like Andrew Lucky is starting to
get to whever. Like, all right, Andrew Lucky is back.
Part of it is with Marlon Mack. They have a
running game. Obviously, they rebuilt the offensive line. Are you

(36:07):
willing to say that Andrew Lucky is back on that
path uh to being one of the elite quarterbacks in
the NFL? Absolutely? Um, Andrew luck Is is a great player. Obviously,
he's coming back from that injury, getting more and more
confident all the time. And you mentioned they've got a
bit of a running game. They rebuilt that offensive line.

(36:27):
How about Quinton Nelson being named the NF or the
the a f c Um Offensive Rookie of a month. Um,
come on as a guard of the first guard that's
ever been awarded that he's dominating the line in stacrim
and she is phenomenal. And for all those people who said, well,
you can't take a guard in the top five, Andy
took him at sixth overall. And when you protect your

(36:47):
quarterback and you allow him to step up the pocket
so he doesn't take a you know, it doesn't take shots. Um,
that whole that whole crowd is that he can't take
a guard fifth overall. You're all idiots, um, every one
of you. Because if a guy can flat play and
dominate the line of correct if you dominate the line
of scrimmage in this league, you know what, you went
about eighty five percent of your games regardless of who's

(37:08):
playing wide this year, especially when you have when you
especially of that level of investment at quarterback coming off
of an injury. You haven't been able to run the
football in years like this. This makes so much, so
much sense, so much absolutely absolutely no question about it.
Awesome stuff. Really appreciate your time staying, thanks for joining
