(00:47):
the tire buying should be. Hope you are having a
great day The Doug Gottlieb Show here on a Monday. Yeah,
we're gonna talk about Seattle and Jane Daniels Distill hitting
his elbow in a game that was gone shades of
RG three and what happened last night. But I'm going
to politely disagree with my radio producer in terms of
(01:11):
what we lead with. I'm sorry, I know it's a Monday.
It happened Saturday night, but that was everything about Saturday
night was amazing. What an unbelievable World series game. Unbelievable,
unbelievable World series game. It gave you so much. It
gave you so much. Ninth inning home run from a
(01:35):
defensive replacement who hadn't hit won in like over a month.
Bottom of the ninth inning, bases loaded and Will Smith
his toe comes off and then goes right back down
on the on home plate. And this after John Smoltz
epic foreshadowing talking about how hard it is to find
home plate when you're sliding, and then Pahz with a
(01:59):
catch he runs over Key k Hernandez to save the game.
And then the eleventh inning, Will Smith, who I didn't
even know, like again forgive me. I love baseball. I
do watch playoff baseball every year. Six World Series, six
World Series rings in a row for one guy. And
(02:20):
then the close out in the bottom of the eleventh
was equally spectacular with uh with with the is equally impressive.
Okay with the double play on the broken bat and
it's Mookie Betts, who he didn't hit well all series,
(02:44):
but he's not a short stop. Converted shortstop makes a
great play, steps on the bag, avoids hitting the runner
as he throws at the first and a double play.
What a game And Jason and Jason Soner wants me
to start with talking about the Seahawks beat and the
Comet and stop at Jason, Wow, it is your team,
(03:06):
it is your victory lab. When you think now about
Saturday night, what should America know about? What Fox Sports
Radio's biggest Dodger fan but also critical analyst thinks of Saturday.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Night about the game Game seven, It gave us everything
we wanted and you summed it up really nicely. I thought,
I think Game three still is going to hold a
special place in my heart. Game three was one of
the best experiences I've ever had. I went into the
weekend assuming that the bou Jays were going to get
to Yamamoto Ons on Friday night and close out the series,
(03:47):
and I was proven wrong, thankfully. H Yamamoto coming back
on zero day's rest to close out a World Series
after having one two World Series games over the previous
eight days. I don't know how you could tell me
that there has been a better performance at the very
(04:07):
least by a pitcher in the postseason. I don't think
enough praise could be given to Yama Moto for that.
You could talk about Miguel Rojas in the last couple
of games. You could be critical of Dave Roberts for
sticking with pa Has too long in the first five games.
But Yama Moto basically Dave Roberts telling the entire baseball
(04:30):
world that he had zero faith in his relievers. And
I'm talking about your like situational relievers that craped the
bed the entire season and they didn't do anything to
address it. Going into the postseason. Dave Roberts kept throwing
US starters and starters after another in Game seven. I've
never seen anything like it. You're right, all those things
(04:53):
that you touched on thought.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
I thought he managed his ass off. I just do.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
I think we give it little too much credit. It's like,
when things work out, he's an exceptional manager. I mean,
but like that all work out, wort.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Why was Pat Heston's centerfield?
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Why would you he put pauson center field because they
needed someone with a because what's his name, Tommy Edmund's
got like a wet paper, wet newspaper for an arm.
So he put passestant center because they needed a throw
at home plate to get the TI in or go
ahead run.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
It was defensive replacement. Is that fair?
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yes, that's exactly what it was.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
And and why was why did they make the switch
at second base? Same thing right now? He ends up
getting I mean, you end up getting a home run.
But the two biggest plays of the game for the
Dodgers in the bottom of the ninth inning were made
by his two defensive replacements. Again, I get, I I
understand where judging results and that process. But again I
(05:55):
and we're doing the same thing with pitchers. And and
I would tell you that, yes, I mean, don't we
all agree with the idea that first starting pitchers are
paid more money because they're generally better than relievers. The
only question is can they get their motor going in
short order? And so many guys have started or played
college baseball where they come out of the pen or whatever.
(06:16):
But yeah, like, as a as a coach, when why
do I have to go to why do I have
to go to bullpen guys who aren't as good at pitchers?
As my starters and the bullpen guys haven't shown themselves
to be up to the challenge. Yeah, again, I thought
it was. I thought it was. It was. Granted, I
am judging results, but I'm also trying to judge process,
(06:36):
and I thought his process was really good.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
And just to be clear of Rojas was a he
wasn't a defensive replacement. Rojas got the start in Game
six because Paws couldn't hit and his Game five replacement
couldn't hit, so they move Edmund, who had been playing
a great second base all series. In fact, in Game three,
I think Tommy Edmund was like a defensive hero and
he put Paw has in just to mix it up
(06:59):
a little bit, and the guy get hits a home run.
And by the way, that's one of the sub stories
of this. Yeah, I guess Miguel Rojas uh his wife
told him was.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Yes, yes, and she kept telling him you get hit
a home run and then before and he's like, what
are you talking about, Like, I haven't hit a home
run forever.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
He's he doesn't home runs.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
I know. And it was a one hander on a slider. Amazing,
it was amazing. I'm as to tell you this like, again,
we could talk about the NFL and Jane Daniels is hurt.
We can talk about the Packers playing down the level
of competition that costs themselves a game. And yet you
have a perfectly good kicker, but then McManis comes back
and you give him the job, and then McManus suddenly struggles.
(07:41):
Like we go into all of those stuff and it's
it's all relatively interesting, but I mean, like, look, Game
seven was an epic game. Game three was an epic game,
and I would say that Game six was a pretty
epic game as well, especially considering the excitement and how
it ended. Is all this fair?
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Jason mcguil Rojas was the hero of Game six with
just his glove. Alon't okay?
Speaker 1 (08:05):
But my point though, is, are you okay saying three
of those games, three of the seven were.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Al Teimer's Yes? Oh absolutely? Drama wise, Oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
So we watched a seven game series where three of
them were all timers. You had, in many people's conversation,
the greatest single game performance by a hitter, that being
show Hey, going back to game three, right, and then
you have Yamamoto, who I mean, like, look, it's very
(08:36):
similar to Madison Bumgardner, right, mad Bum had that and
mad Bum was a little bit was he had to
hit back then, and he was actually good with the
bat as well. So we've seen some of mad Bum
we've never seen show hey, and again, I would have
to I don't have the depth of baseball knowledge in
terms of a series, but what we got was as
(08:57):
good of a baseball series as you pop Sibilly can
get three all time games, including the last two being
absolute knock down dragonmounts Monci. You have a Dodgers podcast, Okay, Yeah,
(09:20):
and Jason was convinced when it went back to Toronto
it was over in game six. Where were you in
terms of your level of belief that they could win
this thing.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
I'm definitely not on the same It was over mentality,
but I understood it because after the eighteenth inning game,
which I was at till the very end, it was
very uninspiring to see the Dodgers come out looking so flat,
while Toronto seemed unbothered by an eighteen inning game. Now,
(09:53):
Toronto also did take out most of their players way
before the Dodgers in that eighteenth inning game.
Speaker 4 (09:59):
VLADIMIRG.
Speaker 3 (09:59):
Gerrea Junior was the only one that played the whole thing,
and so they just seemed refreshed and we seemed flat.
So naturally I didn't like the feeling of going back
to Toronto down in two games when the excitement was
gonna be just probably like Game one in Toronto that
they hadn't experienced. So I didn't like it. But I
wasn't like it's over. I was like, no, it's anything
(10:19):
can happen. And once the eighteenth thinning game happened, I
felt like everything went out the window, like the logic
went out the window. Anything you thought before this yearies started,
it's gone. This is just when eighteen innings the plan,
they're now on plan F you know what I mean.
So I thought anything can still happen. And it wasn't
like Vladimirica Railroad Junior was killing it against us the
way he killed the Yankees single handedly. There was hope,
(10:42):
and we had Yamamoto and I just I had hope.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
But it was it was it was hard.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
It was hard after those two losses, after the eighteenth
thinning game.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
Uh, Sammy, you're like me, You're I'm I'm less than neutral. Right.
The Dodgers are my son's favorite team. I am a
quasi Dodger fan angels are my team, but I was
definitely rooting for the Dodgers. You're more neutral.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
I was ready for the Dodgers Dogs.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
But we're all we're all watching texting on Saturday. Jason
is just he's just on one. Every you know, he's
out the announcers, the umpiring everything. Jason's just on one.
What was your experience like watching Saturay Night?
Speaker 4 (11:27):
I mean this, I think that some Dodger fans would
feel that this World series compared to last year, is
even sweeter, just because it was more of a battle.
I know, last year made up for sort of like
the oh, we have to win, like a real one
in front of fans, you know, outside of twenty twenty.
This one felt like such a battle. Last year, it
was so much hype for Yankees Dodgers, and it was
(11:48):
a dud. It was over in five and this one
was It was like an all timer to go back
to back in that style, and I think Dodger fans
are gonna I mean, this is this is this as
sweet as it gets.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
So it was.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
It was fun to watch. It was very stressful Friday
and Saturday night the whole the whole series was stressful,
outside of the couple of games where the Blue Jays
kind of pulled away and won convincingly. But I mean
from after that eighteen inning game, I was like, this
kind of feels like like twenty eighteen, like it could
go like ever, like they just they wouldn't win another
game after that. But man, when they were down three
(12:22):
to two in the series, it did feel like it
was over. I was more with Jason and then just
to watch them when those two in Toronto would so
could have started on Rob Parker unbelievable. I mean, I've
believing in it.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
You can you can get it on Rob Parker there,
uh is what he is, Doug.
Speaker 4 (12:36):
I've been living here for ten years. We'll go back
to Rob. I've been living here for ten years, and
I've gotten to see them win three World Series in
six years and get to see them play in one, two, three,
how many World Series since twenty seventeen five? Yep five?
So that's I mean, that's a pretty good run for
someone who moved here from Iowa. To see them be
so good in baseball that have the Dodgers win this
(13:00):
much has been incredible.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
The Japanese players just wired differently, Man, They're so good.
I just I love Yamamoto's whole mentality. It reminded me
the World Baseball Classic that they won, Jay Stu, what
were you gonna say about Rob? So? Rob? When we
last joined Rob Parker, he was saying the series was over?
Is that what people are dragging him over?
Speaker 2 (13:21):
More specifically, the Dodgers are cooked, the Dodgers. Dodgers will
not be able to fight back that this game is
the series is over. And we were all interested to
see how he would react, if he would take back
his words, but no, he's been He still thinks that
Toronto very much gave it away, that this was a
(13:43):
fortunate thing for the Dodgers to have happened to them,
And to that point, I'm going to disagree with Rob.
With Rob, you never know kind of where the BA
starts and where the seriousness begins. I have no idea
what game he's playing here with Dodger fans or not,
or if he serious. But they were not cooked. They
showed fight, and I'm proud of them.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
Yeah I would. I mean, I don't know where the
BS starts, but it's but the one, the one thing
that is consistent about Rob is, I don't know anybody
he actually gives credit for winning games. You know, he's
called Tom Brady the luckiest of all time. He said,
Bill Belichick's a phony. So I don't know who is
(14:27):
responsible who actually gets credit for New England winning six
Super Bowls. Similarly, the Dodgers. Again, how many times do
you have to win before you actually get credit? So
I don't I can't concern myself with with Rob in
that in the way that Dodger fans do. But I
think that people who give him attention, you're just doing
(14:47):
him a favor because that's clearly the logic behind it,
and it works.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
That guy that Caleb Joseph, who's the former Major league
catcher and TSN analyst who's just getting killed by Dodger
fans and Keik a Hernan has elevated his his take
this weekend, so it got everyone more pissed off, Like
I will agree with this guy. He was the one
who basically said that the Dodgers were not the better
team in this series. I would say, if you go
(15:12):
numbers next to numbers, the Blue Jays were the better
team in this series. The Dodgers just made one more
play than they did at the end, right yeah?
Speaker 4 (15:21):
Can can Caleb and Rob kind of be right in that?
Like I felt that the Dodgers sort of picked the
blue Jays pockets, Like the blue Jays had their chance
and the Dodgers are just right there to sort of
I agree with it, I would.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
Agree, But also like if you remember, like who is
who touched home play but was like a.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Fraction of second late Heiner Filefa Yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
I mean why didn't he run through home play?
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Yeah, there was that, they asked him that. And also
like his leadoff off the third base was not as
big as lead off as and.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
He's like, listen, they're base running cost him the end
of game six?
Speaker 5 (15:54):
Yeah yeah?
Speaker 1 (15:54):
And winning right yeah?
Speaker 4 (15:57):
And is that a case of like been there, Dodgers
have been there, done that, blue Jays are maybe the
ones coming.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
In again again, I I don't know me Again, it's
a very logical statement, but that does take away from
the idea that they were the better team. The better
team does make those plays, So I mean again, I
I just let's let's we don't need to get into
being critical of people who are critical or whatever. I
just like I woke up with a what I call
(16:23):
a sports high where I invested a lot of time
into watching a supporting event that I can't Honestly, I
did get emotionally tied to wanting the Dodgers to win,
just because I'm I grow so tired of everyone who
doesn't ever visit Southern California tell me how bad Southern
California is when every time I'm in Southern California, I'm like,
(16:45):
I love it here, Like it's awesome. What you know.
I mean, yes, skid Row's bad. I don't live in
skid Row, and nobody I don't know does, right, That's like, Okay,
there's a whole other big city out there. But anyway,
that's not the point. The point is I woke up going, damn,
I just watched one of the best sporting events in
my life, and I got to watch two Friday night,
(17:07):
like Friday was Halloween, right, And like, you know, you're
sitting there and what is sports supposed to do? This
is a big thing. What is sports supposed to do?
Speaker 4 (17:17):
Transport you away? Yeah, take you away from reality?
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Correct? Okay, So again, I'm not looking for anybody's sympathy.
I have a great life, great, but it's it's Halloween night,
and I got my dogs and I got a TV.
My neighborhood there's like one family with kids. I lived
three doors down outside that no one came by, you know.
(17:41):
I got daughters in college, my sons, and I don't
have anybody around for Halloween, Like I love Halloween, and
I got I don't have any ability to go to
a Halloween party. I'm just sitting at home. So I'm like,
I'm gonna watch this game. And I got rewarded with
a great watch. And then it's Saturday night. Now I
got football and I got the multiview and I'm watching
the SC game there when Nebraska and I got this
(18:01):
whole day and we're prepping and we're leaving the next
day for Kansas, and I'm like, you know what, I'm
gonna lock in and just enjoy Game seven, and it's
three to one. I'm like, is this really how the
baseball season is gonna end? And then all of a sudden,
they put a couple together and it just becomes the
most incredible game, the most incredible ending with so many
(18:21):
twists and turns. You had the ground rule double in
Game six, which which definitely changed the ending of that one,
you have the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth,
the infield being in, and then the play by Paez
where he runs over key K and KEYK is trying
to do a Willie Mays catch because it looked like
you might have been a little out of position.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
He catch that.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
No, you're not gonna catch that.
Speaker 4 (18:43):
I don't know what he was thinking.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
But I mean, the whole thing was so great and.
Speaker 4 (18:48):
Makes so many awesome plays throughout the series too.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
I am convinced that Key K Hernandez does not play
regular season baseball anytime it's played. He only plays in
the playoffs for the Dodgers. He's so clo and he's
like in the big plays, I don't even right, like
in the big plays. I'm convinced of it. I just
maybe this is a message of gratitude, or it's congrats
to Jay Stu, or just it's what I love about sports.
(19:14):
Is that again? For those probably five or six hours
each night that I'm watching baseball, I even watched the
pregame show on Saturday. I hate pregame shows and I
used to be part of pregame shows, especially that pregame show.
It was terrible, terrible, because they're just talking about stuff
(19:35):
that again, it's like all prediction stuff, which is just
a waste of time, instead of having some of the
best players in baseball teach me about different guys. Teach
me how black Garreau is this incredible hitter that's been
even better than the playoffs in the regular season. Show
me what they're doing to show Hey, hotel anyway, I
watched pregame show. I loved every second of that game,
(19:56):
every second. It was so good. So I'm not telling
you that football is not a more popular sport. I'm
not telling you that we don't have more things to
get to. Tucker Craft tearing his acl, Jaydeon Daniels dis locating,
all those things are important, and we got plenty of
time to talk about football, but baseball. Take yourself a bow.
What a weekend for the sport.
Speaker 6 (20:18):
This is the best of the Don dot Leaf Show
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
What Up with You Dog Got Leave Show? Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
I Heeartradio.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
App Welcome, Welcome, Welcome in. It is a Wednesday. It's
the middle of the week, the middle of the show,
the middle of the day. We'll get to the midway
of coming Andrew Brant's gonna join us twenty five after
the hour. He is the host of the Business of
Sports podcast We Got a lot to talk about. Tom
Brady has cloned his dog. Huh r r. That was
(20:53):
my Scooby Doo. By the way, guys, my Scooby doo.
You know you got NBA games, got some college football,
but it's Wednesday is kind of the calm before the
ohh storm. Right, got college hoops as well, So there's
a lot of potential storylines, but nothing that jumps out
(21:14):
at you to day other than you know, the Jets
kind of fire sale. If you will tomorrow, you got
Raiders Denver. Denver's a talking point. Tonight, you don't have much,
So let's get to the midway. He's not getting the
middle with you. It's time for stuck in the middle.
Speaker 6 (21:36):
The midway.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
Okay there, Dan Byer, what do you got my man?
What are you thinking of the midway?
Speaker 2 (21:43):
Well?
Speaker 7 (21:44):
I really thought that Jason brought up a great point
that it's it's the midway point of the season, right, Jason, Like,
this is the halfway point.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
If it's pretty simple of the mouth, it's eighteen weeks
and if you divide eighteen by two it's nine, so
you just finished the ninth week. It's very simple math.
I'm not sure how that could be confused.
Speaker 7 (22:04):
I know this one guy who like last week, was like,
it's the halfway point of the season right now, you
take seventeen And he even asked my buddy. He goes,
what's half of seventeen? And my buddy was like eight
and a half and they're like, all right, we're in it.
Oh man, what a crazy spot right now?
Speaker 2 (22:23):
Is the halfway point of the NFL season. I got
zero responses to it. I blame Ryan Smith here for
not responding. I want to know halfway through the NFL
season one of two things. What was the biggest surprise
from the first half of the season or what's the
storyline that you are looking forward to following moving forward
(22:47):
for the second half of the season. Which one do
you guys want to do?
Speaker 4 (22:53):
I think they're both game.
Speaker 7 (22:55):
I think that all work in this spot, even when
we talked about it last week. I think there's a
a midway point. There's things that you can look ahead
and look back to. The reason I didn't respond was
because I thought we decided last week that we were
going to do that this week when I told you
they were eighteen weeks in the NFL season. So that's
why there was no response today because I just figured
(23:16):
that this was this was the given portion of the equation.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
M I'm gonna do. I like first half of the season.
I like looking back, we can wonder and maybe do
next week and do the last the kick of the season.
I just think there's all kinds of interesting things. The
culture the most interesting they just are. I mean between
Chris Ballard, their GM, Shane Stike in their head coach,
(23:46):
I think most people thought they were on some form
of hot seat. And remember they started this year with
Anthony Richardson planning to be their starting quarterback, despite the
fact last year for him ended so strangely, and they
had Danny Daniel Jones and whatever the NFL thinks of him,
(24:06):
popular public opinion was super down on Daniel Jones. And
when you say Danny Dimes, it's kind of said with
a wink nod, you know what I mean. Danny Dimes
been great, Jonathan Taylor's been awesome, the defense been pretty good.
Shane Styke is a tremendous play caller, and they got
a shot now adding sauce Gardner to go far in
(24:30):
the AFC playoffs, not just with how good they are,
but how beaten up and how average everybody else is.
I can't think of a more interesting story that's different
than we thought it would be than the Indianapolis Colts.
Speaker 7 (24:42):
And I think that the trepidation from people or the
people who have some questions about the Colts are the
ones who haven't watched the Colts. They are they are really.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
Picking the Chargers ass like JAYSETU like they kick their ass.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
I was like that six times.
Speaker 7 (25:02):
But I would rather a team turn the ball over
six times then to be uh, not be able to
do anything on offense, like they didn't get the running
game going, but like they like they they lost the
game with seven, but it was probably realistically a two
score game. But to turn it over six times means like,
oh my gosh, what are you doing? And and I've
(25:24):
been frustrated with the Seahawks at times in the way
that they've turned over the ball earlier in the season,
But turning over the ball sometimes I don't think is
a sign of.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
I would have it.
Speaker 1 (25:35):
Multiple weeks in a row. It happened three weeks in
a row, like Okay, now we got.
Speaker 4 (25:38):
A proact correct and and and and.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
And Jay s Douw. I'm not saying the Colts are
the best team in the MC or that's not a
sign of ooh, maybe the damn is gonna break, maybe
this team will come back down to earth, right, I'm
not saying the question or we were trying to talk
about the midway is most interesting first half storylines. That's
pretty interesting to me that the Colts, who none of
us were Like, if you would have listed your time
eight teams or your top ten teams from the AFC
(26:03):
to start the year, would you have listened to the Colts.
Speaker 7 (26:05):
No, it's not a chance.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
I thought stich In and Ballard were like on the
way out.
Speaker 1 (26:10):
Yeah, that's what I said. Yeah, no question. So that's
why I would say it's again, I'm not proclaiming them
to be the best team in the AFC, to be
a super Bowl favorite. You know, there's lots of teams
they have better record than. I'm not sure they're actually
better then, but so far in the first half season,
they have shown themselves to be pretty darn good, shown
themselves to be well coached, and it's the surprise of
(26:33):
the year for me, how well the Colts have played
with Daniel Jones that quarterback.
Speaker 7 (26:38):
Can we do an actual look at the Kansas City
Chiefs because I don't feel that we ever really look
at them in a way that isn't somewhat biased one
way or another. Starting of the year, zero and two
hots over, super Bowl hangover, then they go and they
win five out of six guests, Who's back Kansas City?
(27:00):
Best team in the NFL? And then we see them
loose to the Bills this past weekend. As I mentioned earlier,
if the playoffs were to start the day, the Chiefs
would not be in the playoffs. They're at five and four,
so who are they? They don't have a running game.
They don't have a running back right now. Their win,
their best win on this on the slate, is a
(27:22):
home win against the Lions. It's a nice win to
take that. Detroit's a very good team. But the Baltimore
win lamar Get's hurt in the game. Not that they
would have won it if he was healthy, but Baltimore
isn't the same. Win against the Giants is nothing. The
Raiders they blank them thirty one nothing. Raiders aren't any good.
(27:44):
The commander said Marcus Mariota is their quarterback. They just
said Josh Allen go twenty three to twenty six against them,
So really, how good are the Kansas City Chiefs?
Speaker 2 (27:54):
They're not a playoff team if it started today, right? Yep?
And was was Sunday not the smallest biggest game of
any weekend. Like for all the hype that CBS gave
it and Jim Nantz and Tony Romo did their best
to make it sound big, it was almost like and
you kind of had to take Josh Allen's lead after
(28:14):
the game. He was basically like, we haven't done anything.
Like the Bills beat the Chiefs. That's what they do.
They just never beat them when they have to. I
found that to be interesting. The smallest biggest game of
the weekend, Bill's Chiefs camp.
Speaker 7 (28:29):
It's the rivalry in the NFL. And it looks like
it's a seven point loss on the road against Buffalo,
which doesn't look bad, but when you dig a little
deeper and you watch the game, Buffalo was in pretty
good control for that contest.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
I'm gonna say Drake May, I'm gonna say the I'll
say the Patriots, but Drake May let's focus uber focus
on the Drake May part of this. Okay, As you
guys know, as I've said on this broadcast, I care
less of sports than I do about how sports is covered.
I probably follow how sports is covered too much. I
(29:06):
get real bogged down in the weeds of what people
say about it, and I like to point out contradictions
and predictions. The Drake May story, guys, and how the
media has covered this thing has been just laughable. Okay,
So let's go back at the beginning of the college
football season in twenty three. It was like Kayleb Williams,
Drake May, Drake May or Kerrey Williams. They were by
(29:29):
far the greatest two quarterbacks that'll ever come out of
the of the NFL draft. It was one and two,
which one do you swat? Who knows? And then it
plays out and Drake May falls, He falls out of favor,
didn't have a great last season. All of a sudden,
Jaden Daniels has taken in front of him in the draft.
Drake May plays a pretty good rookie season, then gets eight,
(29:52):
gets a Mike Rabel season this year, and now everyone's saying, hey,
if we redrafted this whole thing. Drake May's at the top.
It's obvious Drake May. It's obviously Drake May. So anyways,
and Doug just said he's the MVP last segment, So
I want to I want people to please be consistent
(30:12):
with their coverage. That's all I ask got.
Speaker 7 (30:15):
Doug had him second in the MVP. Did pick Josh
Allen over him, but more so than Patrick Mahomes from
what the odds are saying, But yeah, you're absolutely right.
How about the Ryan Poles piece that came out where
he put together that that basically disc clip of Drake
May when they were evaluating quarterbacks because he so wanted
to take Caleb Williams. I love that little nugget that
(30:39):
we got entering the season and now and now, by
the way, do we know if you would take Caleb
Jaden Daniels over Caleb Williams, because that was the discussion
this whole last I.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
Mean the end of the season.
Speaker 4 (30:51):
Yeah, absolutely, right, now, are we.
Speaker 7 (30:53):
So sure that we want to do that?
Speaker 2 (30:54):
And you know what people are saying, Well, of course
you don't take Jade Williams because he's not he's not available.
But I thought coming out of college he was the
guy that was too thin and too weak. I thought
that was his the knock on him. Now you're gonna
knock him for being unavailable. What's going on here? Yes?
Speaker 7 (31:13):
They last year was just such a funky year for
the Commanders.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
I have.
Speaker 1 (31:18):
I got a couple other first half of the season,
the downfall of the Dolphins is a big story. And
it's a big story because, look, we've talked about about
Tua over the years, the six years he's been in,
the injuries, the arm strength or whatever. But Mike McDaniel
(31:38):
escaped all of this criticism unscathed. Right, he was cool.
He's like a hipster coach. He's got the glasses, he's
got the joggers. You know, he drives a Bentley. He's
gotta get swagged to him. Whatever has happened there has
been an abject disaster, and his GM has already been fired.
I don't know what they do it to h going
(31:59):
going forward. And reports now are that he's safe, but
I can't see it that the seasons then well him
him being safe. Mike McDaniel going from the snapshot of
what the league may people think the league may look
like in ten years to being the first coach out
(32:20):
that downfall has been passed.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
Why would McDaniel's joab be safe if they bring in
a new GM. Isn't he just going to pick a
new head coach. Isn't that the train of thought? Or
they're actually gonna keep the head coach.
Speaker 1 (32:32):
No? I mean, look, I agree with you. I don't
think it's safe. But they have said, and they leaked
to the NFL insiders that oh, they like Mike mdane,
You're gonna be safe. Like, what are they gonna say?
You know, if you say, hey could be coaching for
his job. Everybody knows. Everybody knows anyway, but it's the
public statement.
Speaker 7 (32:49):
By the way, I would rather be Chris Greer than
Mike McDaniel. I'd rather not have to be at work
rather than let go people like man remember the Steve Smith. Yeah,
I'd much rather be Chris Greer. Move on, look for
your next gig. All McDaniel's got to deal with now
is this team for the next eight weeks?
Speaker 2 (33:11):
I thought Ryan Smith had a really good point about
the Raiders. What was it, Ryan, He's a big Raiders guy.
Speaker 7 (33:17):
Yes, I want need to know how in the world
did the Raiders beat the Patriots on Week one?
Speaker 4 (33:24):
How how did that happen?
Speaker 1 (33:26):
You got throughout Week one results?
Speaker 7 (33:28):
Right, it's I get that, but it's the Raiders, like
how there? I'll tell you what survivor pools. I was
on New England week one, lost one of my entries.
They played a good half against the Raiders, and then
the Raiders, for whatever reason I would class them Gino
(33:48):
went through for like three hundred and seventy yards. There
was no Christian Gonzales for New England at that point.
Then the next week the Patriots got into a bit
of a shootout against the Dolphins. That was a close contest,
but New England ends up winning it in the end.
So New England was close to maybe starting the year
zero to two with losses to the Raiders and Dolphins.
(34:09):
And now they're sitting there seven and two atop the conference.
And honestly, I don't want to say look unbeatable, because
they could have very well lost to the Falcons, but
they were in control of that game against Atlanta and
now look like a formidable opponent that come playoff on.
Speaking of the Falcons, to me, they're my puzzler. I mean,
(34:33):
we love Bejon Robinson. We love the running game. That
division looked like it was up for grabs. And then
they play on Monday Night and they have a dominating
win against the Buffalo Bills. And then you just throw
in a stinker at Carolina. They've been all over the
map this year. The Falcons are my puzzler, sitting there
(34:53):
at three and five.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
And that, my friends, is the Midway, the Midway.
Speaker 6 (35:01):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Fox sports
radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
That's the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
So full disclosure, my late father was most of you know.
He's a basketball coach. It's a longtime college basketball coach
for that high school coach, and he's an AU coach,
and he would do this thing where couldn't help himself,
(35:32):
you know, and all the player tickets are in the
same spot, and he would, you know, do his own coaching,
sitting there going ah, he can't play, Get him out
of there. He stinks, and it's like, hey, you know,
his dad or his mom and his girlfriend's sitting right
next to you. So my coach coach moved him to
a different area, like away from the rest of the parents,
(35:54):
because he couldn't help himself. You have social media, so
it doesn't really matter if they're sitting with anybody, not
saying anybody, because all takes their fingers and a pressed send.
But after the Bears won the game, James Adunza, who's
(36:19):
Romadunza's dad, posts the messa on social media that asked
whether the Bears would quote trade Rome to a team
that will actually throw him the ball. Another post that
declared the wide receiver should be seeing at least ten
targets per game. Yeah. Yeah, Well, here's the thing. There's
(36:45):
a bunch of parts to it. Because James Dunsay, who
is on social media, lives in Las Vegas. He has
almost four thousand followers on Instagram James and Dunsay. Does
he watch film with the team? Does he know the coverages?
(37:07):
And oh yeah, by the way, even if he knows
the coverages and watches film and knows everything, you don't
do that. He can't do that. And while Roma Dunsay doesn't,
he's like, I don't even talk with my dad, Like, okay,
doesn't matter. The most important part is like it makes
it harder for your son at work. Not easier to
(37:31):
people who sit there and go like, wow, this is
just a sign. Well here, there's a couple of things
to it. First part is at least you know what's
being said to Roma Dunza when he does call his folks.
Now my old high school coach is now my assistant coach.
That's weird. Andy Ground. He used to always say, don't
(37:52):
worry about parents, O guy. They're blinded by love. Everything
they say is blinded by love. And James and Dunsay's
comments are blinded by love. But they're also just blind
to the Nobody does that in the NFL. You're a
grown up and you're acting like a child. You got
to my guy's ball. We gonna get rid of Like dude,
(38:14):
here's his son, Roma Dunze responding to it.
Speaker 4 (38:18):
I don't make a big deal out of it. You know,
obviously he has his opinions, I have mind, and he
feels like he needs to voice those things on social media.
Speaker 1 (38:24):
But you know that's that's that's his prerogative.
Speaker 4 (38:27):
But you know, he speaks for himself.
Speaker 2 (38:29):
I speak for myself.
Speaker 4 (38:29):
Man.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
I'm happy, I'm I'm just trying to do my job
within this you know organization, that's you.
Speaker 1 (38:34):
Know, as a leader, as a as.
Speaker 2 (38:36):
A person, as an individual, and then as a football player.
Speaker 4 (38:38):
So trying to excel at you.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
Know, Hall of Fame level in both those aspects. So
that's all I'm focused on, right.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
I mean, a perfectly professional answer, and I take him
at his word. But like you're you're a parent, you're
a giver of DNA, and I'm sure you've done a
ton to get your kid into this position, right, get
him into this position. But dude, taking it on the
social media is like a high school kid complaining about
(39:10):
catches has no effect other than making your son super
uncomfortable because no matter how much they say, hey, you
speak for he speaks for himself. I speak for myself.
We don't talk that much. Everybody thinks otherwise, and now
it's just awkward needlessly. So I think, can we are
(39:30):
we also all in agreement? And a buyer's probably an
agreement with this too. Antonio Brown having legal troubles post
NFL career. In the predictability matrix, it was pretty it
was pretty easy to predict, right, Like, did anybody think, like, hey,
Antonio Brown, He's gonna turn his life around? He's gonna
speak at schools, He's gonna be a church going citizen
(39:51):
like that tracks and that again, nobody thought attempted murderer.
But the fact that he's has legal troubles, everybody's their heads.
Let's welcome in our good friend who joins us every week.
He's Mark Dominic. He's been the general manager of the
Tampay Buccaneers twenty five plus years in the National Football League, scouting,
moving up to the front office. All the things, Mark,
(40:14):
I want to ask you about bow Knicks. My take,
there were some that are like, oh, bo Nicks is regressing.
May want to look at a quarterback. If you're Denver,
you got everything but an offense. My thing is like, look,
they're winning, and one of the reasons they're winning is
their defense. One of the reasons they're defense so good
is they don't play the quarterback bubkiss. I just the
warning is, don't overpay in the second contract, right, that's
(40:39):
the Tua thing. That's all these the Danny Dimes thing.
Don't overpay in the second contract. Don't worry about moving
on now, worry about just trying to do the best
you can and using all that money. Where are you
on bow Knicks currently and in his near term future
with the Broncos.
Speaker 5 (40:55):
Well, I'm with you. I mean, I think I'm very
comfortable to both Nicks, and I think that even though
sometimes tea man, i'd be playing to the level I've
seen Bonis play before. To your point, he's in the
second year of a rookie deal. There's no rush here
for anybody, the Denver Broncos, their fans, or the organization.
They're gonna be patient with him. Let him continue to play,
let him continue to grow, and as long as they
continue to win, I don't care what it looks like.
(41:17):
I'm like, I'm gonna worry about Bonick. To your point, Doug,
I'll worry about bone Nicks after year four. I don't
have to do a deal after year three. There's some
there's no written code here that says every player that
gets to year three has to get a deal, And
I think that's the way you can look at it.
But I think that Bonnicks is gonna be fine, and
I think that the Denver Broncos are finding a way
to get to maybe a tougher journey right now offensively,
(41:38):
But it doesn't scare me to have him as my quarterback.
Speaker 1 (41:41):
Stut Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio. H let's
start with the Sauce Gardner trade before we get to
the Quinna Williams trade. Let's start from the Jets perspective.
Do you like to move from the Jets perspective? I don't.
Speaker 5 (41:56):
I don't love it, right, And here's the way. Yes,
first round picks or two first round picks, and that
sounds well and good, but the reality is you got
to go make the right picks. All right. You can
pick a cornerback in the first round and he's not
very good and he turns out to be a bust.
You can you can take I mean just because you
get collateral, I means you've got to still number one,
replace the player that you drafted in some capacity, and
(42:18):
then you have an extra pick to hopefully not get wrong.
That's not as easy as it sounds. So I think
that when I looked at this trade, I said, I
think the Jets are doing themselves a disservice by just
jettising as sorry about that, but getting rid of all
their players in terms of you know, trying to Okay,
we're gonna we're gonna build this team out different. By
the way, those guys are still younger players in the
(42:39):
National Football League, and so now you're just going to
try to make this thing even more difficult to rebuild.
I just think it's a really tough move for Aaron Glenn.
But to me, if Aaron Glenn's willing to trade a corner,
maybe there's something more. I don't understand what was going
on behind the scenes. That to me is kind of
a bigger surprise based off his position. I love the
deal for the Colts. I think it makes a ton
of sense for them. They are in an opportunity right
(43:00):
now to win the South and let alone maybe see
what they can do in the postseason. So I think
the Colts it's worth giving up to once. I think
it's a good move by them.
Speaker 1 (43:10):
Okay, now do Quinn Williams. Let's start with the Jets.
Does that make sense to the Jets?
Speaker 5 (43:15):
Again, I don't think so. You know, they got a
guy named Jawan Briggs who's played pretty well inside for
them and on the defensive line. But quinnin Williams, you know,
he was a baby coming into the league. He's still
a young man for a second round pick. Again, I'd
rather just have the player, and I can make that trade,
probably pre draft, but let's let's kind of see what
this team kind of unfolds. How a season of folds
(43:37):
the Jets to me, they must have gone to Woody Johnson.
They had a conversation said, hey, look, we're not going
to win this year. Seasons tanked, probably end up put
the number one pick. Let's rebuild the team from the start.
And what I think Aaron Glenn probably did is we
did the same thing dead in Detroit. Let us do
it here. And I have a feeling Woody Johnson bought
and I think I don't love the trade. I think
(43:58):
for Dallas it's a much better deal for the Dallas Cowboys.
Even though Dallas is admitting their first round pick, Mabbie Smith,
who they thought was gonna be a player, they've already
replaced it with Kenny Clark and Naquin and Williams. So
clearly they missed on their first round pick as well.
Speaker 1 (44:11):
Stut Gottlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio and the
iHeartRadio app. Mark Dominic is our guest. Okay, so they've
you know, the Jets have waived the white flag. We
know they're in a race. I just think I agree
with you, But to me, it's all positioning themselves to
get the quarterback that they want. Is that? Is that fair?
(44:33):
Like they're just sitting there going You had the owners
say they couldn't complete a pass, and yeah, then fields
had one good game. But to me, this is all
about loading up with picks to completely you're because you're
not saying you're not gonna win this year. You're saying
you're not gonna win for a couple of years. Right.
You can't get rid of your to your most or
maybe your two most talented young players and hope to
compete anytime soon. So you're going for a complete remodel.
(44:56):
And the first focus is you got to have enough
first round picks to get the quarterback that you want
and then work out the rest, probably trading those picks
to get other multiple picks. Fair guess on what they're
looking at doing.
Speaker 5 (45:08):
Yeah, I think so. I mean, I think the one
thing I would be thinking about is the Jets GM
and I was in this situation is each draft, I
would probably try to take one of my if I
have an extra first, try to you know, move that
back and get an extra first the next year and
pick up an extra third, like so I can continue to,
you know, have high picks. I think the Jets are
going to end up with the number one pick in
the draft, and so I don't think you had to
do this to make sure you get the quarterback you want.
(45:30):
I think you just you're going to end up there
either way. I think they're making sure they end up
there by the moves they've made. You know, just yes,
you've got to find the quarterback. This league is about
signing the quarterback. That's all that matters.
Speaker 1 (45:41):
Really.
Speaker 5 (45:42):
Yes, you want to build around them and all that
good stuff, but you've got to find that quarterback and
then you have a chance to win. I've said the
story maybe before, but TJ. Watt or JJ Watt was
the best defensive player in the league forever right, for
five six years, and you could only get at that
time the Houston Texans and nine and seven. They turn
around to get Deshaun Watson when he was good, and
suddenly the Houston Texans are a twelve win team. I mean,
(46:04):
it just shows you the impact that that quarterback position has.
So I get that the Jets want to make sure
they get that guy, but I feel like they've pulled
away so much from that team that even if they
get that guy, they still got to protect that guy.
And then they you know, running back's already shown that
he's been on the trading block, so he's not probably
coming back. Garrett Williams is probably looking around going, I
don't know what's going to happen to me, So you know,
it's It just creates a lot of uncertainty. I don't
(46:25):
love it, but I understand the Jets. I fundamentally believe
they've sold the owner. We're going to rebuild this whole
thing and start over instead of trying to piece mail it.
And I think that's what they did.
Speaker 1 (46:34):
And what hey Johnson thought, Yep, you and I are
a completely lockstep here. What do you do with Kyler
Murray for the Arizona Cardinals.
Speaker 5 (46:42):
Yeah, I get I think he's done his last snap.
And I say that because just watching Kyler in the system,
watching the games, watching his interaction with other players and
other teammates. You know, if you really watch the Arizona Cardinals,
there's a lot of throws. He may not have the
bad completion percentage, there's a lot of throws that he
didn't make that are you know, complete or he didn't
(47:04):
see or just higher completion plays where you're like, you
got to make that play if you're a quarterback at
this level. And I have a feeling Manti Austin Ford,
the general manager there, who didn't do the deal, who
didn't draft him in the first place, has looked at
and said, this is not the leader we're looking for,
and so therefore, let's move on. Let's put him on
ir let's make sure he doesn't have something more catastrophic
for an injury, and let's just move on. So I
(47:25):
don't think Kyler Murray's an Arizona Cardinal in twenty twenty
six at all. And I don't know if he's going
to see another stand. I don't think he'll see another
snap in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 1 (47:32):
Right, because then if he gets hurt, then you're probably
you got you're underwater for a future years contract that
you don't want to be underwater for. Okay, now let
me put you back in the seat as a general
manager for a team that doesn't have a quarterback. Are
you interested in Kyler Murray?
Speaker 5 (47:48):
No, I'm not. You know, I'm gonna bet my I mean,
there's just been too many little red flags across the bow,
you know, And I appreciate that Arizona said, look, let's
restart this whole thing, and let's kind of figure this out,
and let's let's see if we can get this Coup
Murray thing to work. But the reality is, when Steve Kin,
the former general manager, wrote the art, wrote the contract
(48:09):
to make sure that he would actually watch film and
not participate in video games or whatever, that whole clause
was that they finally pulled back out. It was such
a bad look. It spoke so deeply to his level
of love of the game to me that it would
make me say, as much as I'd like i'm quarterback list,
I might be better off trying to see if I
can find that guy in the mid round, or go
(48:30):
find the older guy that you know has still got
something left in him, instead of going with the guy
that I'm afraid the team dynamics won't be great even
if he plays well for four or five games.
Speaker 1 (48:41):
I hear you, what do you think of the Bengals
and a couple of the defensive players openly complaining about
the offense and saying to just get a stop after
they lost to the Bears, last weekend.
Speaker 5 (48:53):
Yeah, I mean it's a it's a hard game, right,
it's to kind of see what happened. You know, they've
gone to Bengals has certainly gone through so tough things.
You watch Cam Taylor britt and they bench him and
then they turn around and let him put to the
cornerback for the Bengals. Then they put him back on
the field and he kind of shuts down roma dunes
lay the whole game. But they still score forty points.
You know, it's it's they're not getting home. They're not
getting to the pass rush. You know, as much as
(49:15):
Trey Hendrickson is trying to do as much as he can,
some of the guys they have on the defensive front,
whether it's Chris Jenkins, he's a run stuffer, but he's
still seemed some time to try to get to the
quarterback and that's just not happening for them. So they're
lacking pass rush not only just you know, depth, but
actually interior pass rush and push and that's killing this
team defensively in my opinion, and that's keeping them on
(49:35):
the field. You know, I don't think he decides to
point fingers right now. It's been frustrating. They have signs
of life. But I think now it's the time where
not a player's only meeting but Zach Taylor will take
care of it and get and get him together. Say
let's stop pointing fingers at each other, point him as yourself,
and make sure we're doing what we're supposed to be
doing individually.
Speaker 1 (49:52):
Yeah it sounds good, but once once the cats out
the back, once the defense is calling them out, it's
really any other comments that they make, won't you know,
I won't resonate in any sort of way. Mark, great stuff.
As always, thanks so much for joining us, have a
great weekend. We appreciate you being our guest on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 5 (50:10):
Thanks for having me on, Doug, enjoy your weekend.
