(00:26):
Thanksgiving weekend. The cruise all back and we're loaded up
and ready for the holiday season. Right, Merry Christmas to you.
You're like, whoa DG Well, hold on one, you're Jewish, Okay,
I can still wish you a merry Christmas. Two, it's
only December first. Hey, once we get best Thanksgiving, you

(00:49):
can wish anybody a merry Christmas. You know Christmas lights.
Now is the time. Now is the time. Two months
ago was not the time. Now is the time. Now
is the time? All right to Jay stews here, Dan
Byer's here, Iowa Sam is here, and maybe most importantly,
I'm here. We got a lot to get to. I

(01:11):
want to talk of this Lang Kiffin thing because everybody's
talking about it, and I want to get everybody's opinion,
because you know it's all gonna be based upon your perspective.
Dan has been and Jason have really been in the
media longer than I have. Because I'm a coach and
because I've been around college athletics a little bit more intimately,
I may have a different perspective. And Sam is again

(01:32):
no disrespect to you for Sam, but more more of
a fan than somebody who's covered in the media. He
has his own perspective. Let me share with you mine. Okay.
Lange Kiffin is new head coach at LSU. He's no
longer an ole Miss. He won't coach ole Miss in
the College Wall playoff the unlike Lebron James, I can

(01:53):
quote The Godfather. It's not one of my favorite movies.
It is a great all time movie. Theins we've chosen, right,
this is the business we've chosen, and the voice of
reason comes from Nick Saban, which is the college football

(02:13):
and scholastic calendar is so out of whack that it
puts people in these positions which are inenviable I mean,
their first world problems. Right, are you gonna go from
making you know, I don't know, ten million a year
at ole Miss to making thirteen million a year at LSU. Again,

(02:35):
these are let's have respect for most people, Like, you're
coaching a college football team for thirteen million dollars a year.
That's a pretty good gig. And the reason that you
can't wait if you're LSU is because, well, now people
are putting together their rosters for next year. One who

(02:58):
do you want to keep? And more importantly, who do
you want to go poach from other SEC schools or
other lower level schools in the portal? Could you wait
a couple of weeks? You could, But now you're to
the point where if you don't pull the trigger, you're
getting further and further and further behind. And with every

(03:18):
day in which you don't, you don't hire lank Iff.
And the reason you can you do it now is
you're like, look, if he coaches Ole Miss in the
playoffs and he doesn't have a signed contract with LSU
and they win the thing, he ain't coming. So I
understand how all this stuff works. If it was me,
I don't believe I would leave. I don't know, but

(03:40):
I don't believe I would leave. The logic behind it
for me is I mean, I if you have so
much fun building it at a place like ole Miss.
Is it harder to rebuild it and to continue it
on at ole Miss than it is LSU? Sure? Uh,
But you're making the type of wealth either place which

(04:00):
you're not gonna spend, and you can build a legacy
at a place as opposed to you go to LSU
and you're never gonna be saving. You might not match
up to last Miles and at Orgeron has a special
place in people's hearts, and at Oorzron had probably the
best college football team we've ever seen. So you're chasing
after all three of those guys and what happens when

(04:24):
you catch him. Whereas it ole Miss, you can be
the guy, but it's a personal choice. And it's not
like Lane Kiffin just got to ole Miss last year,
flipped it and left. He's been there six years, They've
had good runs. The only thing about this that doesn't
sit well with anybody, I believe is the timing of

(04:46):
it and the sort of public discussion as to which
job he should take or should he stay. I also
don't blame Keith Carter for not letting him coach. I
totally understand what why he wanted to coach, and if
it was me and I'm the athletic director, I let
him coach. I just do I try and win a

(05:07):
national championship at ole Miss. Why Because it's gonna be really,
really hard to get back there ever again. And all
you want to do is put yourself in the best
possible position to get there. And the way to do
that is to keep him as the head coach, even
if he's recruiting for a different school. There's no reason
that you can't sit down with him and go, Hey,
we're gonna we're gonna talk about all these guys and

(05:30):
the portal and who you can go after, who you
can't go after, and what you're gonna get, what you're
gonna do. Uh. That may be uncomfortable to some of you,
or maybe it was uncomfortable to Ole Miss. I think
that's the one way in which you can protect yourself
if you're old Miss, because your fear is he wins
a national championship and then anybody with eligibility comes in and
joins him in LSU, which may well happen anyway, but

(05:55):
that's your fear. Dan Byer, You've been covering college football
for a long time, plus you grew up a college
football fan Wisconsin alum, but an Ohio State fan. What's
your feelings on link Kiffin and everything that's taking place here.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Yeah, no, it's my sorry. I have a little frogg
in my throat. I don't think he had any choice.
I think that he had to leave. I thought there
was at one point where he could maybe do both,
and then when the statement came out the week prior
to the Egg Bowl saying that an announcement was going
to be made on Saturday, I felt that that said
enough that he was likely gone from ole Miss, and

(06:38):
I just didn't think that that situation would be tenable.
I don't think anybody would have been happy in that situation.
I think that Kifven's going to be blamed for whatever
happens with ole Miss, but I just don't think that
it was tenable for him to stay, and he had
to leave for LSU.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Now, what are your thoughts on him not wanting to
coach but not being allowed to coach?

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah, I get it. I think that it would be
the best of both worlds, but I don't think LSU
would want him to coach. Heck, they're paying his bonuses
for whatever Old Miss does, so he's not missing out
on the money. I understand why Old Miss wouldn't want
him there. CBS Sports did a deep dive into what

(07:24):
is transpired over the last few weeks, and for as
much as we had heard that, yeah, the players wanted
Kiffin there and that they were sticking up for their
head coach, that wasn't necessarily the case. Then the threats
that were made by Kiffin on stripping the whole coaching
staff and bringing them to LSU if they didn't let

(07:44):
him coach, I just, yeah, I don't think. I don't
think everybody at Old Miss loved what went on for
the last three weeks. It was kind of a soap opera.
It was a soap opera.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Here's Bill Kauer, former Steelers head coach, on CBS talking
about what.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Kiven did since talk about Lane Kiffin's decision and what
he asked in his statement that he was denied the
opportunity to coach the Ole Miss team through the course
of the playoffs, and he was denied by the AD.
And I would say, why would you even ask that question?
Why would an AD let a coach who made a
decision that he wanted to go to LSU, and I

(08:19):
stay at Ole miss coach my players and use my
coaches and tell them for the next month why they
should be joining him at LSU. Totally understand. I would
just say thank you, Lane and goodbye. And now that
being said, if indeed he decides to take other coaches
with him, I would just say, any player that goes
to play for Lane Kiffin, just understand one thing. It's
not about the program. It's about Lane Kiffin because he

(08:41):
don't care about the players that he just went through
a season with a special season, players he's had for
four years, with an opportunity to go to the playoffs,
He's decided to take them and only leave them, which
I get, Okay, you can want to do that, but
now you're going to take offensive coaches with you and
destroy the.

Speaker 4 (08:54):
Program and deplete the program, deplete.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
The program and the dreams of these young men who
you said that you want to there and you want
to do it with. But if I can't do it,
I'm not gonna let you do it yourself.

Speaker 5 (09:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
I think Bill Cower is living in a fantasy world.
To be completely honest with you, you know, I mean,
look at the same time that we're being critical of
Lane Kiffen. Pick coach that's been fired after. I mean,
Deshaun Foster was fired three games into his second season
at UCLA. Second season Mike Gundy won for like was

(09:29):
it nineteen out of twenty one years, got fired three
games in Heck, Kentucky just fired Mark Stoops, right, just
fired Mark Stoops at Kentucky. And if you go back
to last year the start of the year, like, you know,
here's a guy that he look he had consecutive losing

(09:53):
seasons at the end of his run. He finished to
and ten this year seven five and seven. But to
Kentucky to places they've never been before, They're like, you're
acting like there's there's some loyalty from schools again, do
I I owe a debt of gratitude to Josh Moon,

(10:14):
to Mike Alexander. Josh is my athletic director. Mike Alexander's
my chancellor. They gave me an opportunity. Wo't know what
he did not that will go up, That will go
a long long way if I'm ever fortunate to be
put in this situation. And I do think there's a
I owe them a degree of loyalty because they gave
me a chance when others did not. The reality to

(10:35):
it is that, you know, one of the reasons that
we're able to have any money at Green Bay was
Sundance wicks Is buyout was seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
That money was huge for us to balance the books.
It's not always a terrible thing when a guy leaves,
but like, like, if you schools aren't loyal to coaches,
what are you even taught? What is Bill Cowry even

(10:55):
talking about? What world is he living in? He's living
being in a studio at he worked for the Steelers.
They've been overly loyal to coaches for years. That's not
the reality of college athletics. They just haven't. Again, I
point out Mike Gundy two years ago had one of
the greatest turnaround seasons ever ever. They lost to like

(11:19):
South Alabama like second game, end up winning ten games,
got to thet got to the Big twelve championship game,
right everybody else, send up spending, They get caught behind,
They have a bad year last year. This year's quarterback
gets hurt third third series of the season, and thing
falls apart. They lose three games he gets fired, Like,
what world are you living in? Bill? Stop being so

(11:43):
some some TV guy in New York that's like these kids,
he's recruited for four years. How many old miss players
have been there for four years? How many? Look, I'm
not saying I don't believe in loyalty. My goal at
Green Bay is to coach guys for four years or

(12:03):
five years. But hey, Bill, have you ever heard of
the transfer portal of nil? I'm trust me. What happens
is you sit there and you sit down and kid
and be like, hey man, I'm all in on your career.
You're not ready. Now I'm gonna invest. We're gonna give

(12:23):
you a little money. We're gonna work you out. We're
gonna red churchy and you'll play a little bit your
freshman year softwer by your junior senior or you'd be
a star force. Nobody does that. You know why they
all leave? They all leave. It doesn't matter if you
gave a player I've got. I've given guys scholarships that
did happen to not have another Division one scholarship, and

(12:46):
you're like, they got to be so thankful, Like now
now second, they can get more money else where they leave.
That's the reality of it. Bill Kauer is operating in
an alternative universe. Again, Somebody send me, I guarantee somebody listening.
I'd like to know how many players at ole Miss
are seniors that started their careers at ole Miss. I'm

(13:10):
gonna guess the number is less than ten. Less than ten.
So Lane Kiffen being about Lane Kiffin, he stayed there
the last six years, Dude, he could have left last year.
He didn't. He left because he's going to be at
a job where there is no amount of money they're

(13:32):
not willing to spend in order to win. And I'm
sure that on some level there's a frustration there at
ole Miss because they just don't have the depth of boosters,
the depth of enstate talent. They don't have the resources
they have at LSU. That's the reality. And nobody comes
up to you after you lose a game and go hey,

(13:53):
how much did you have in nil? No one asked
me last year. There wasn't a single person who wrote
an article torching what we were doing. It goes, hey,
how much did you have an nil? And how much
did the other guy have? Keep in mind that half
my nil broke his ankle ten games in the season.
Nobody said that, So stop with the oh my gosh,

(14:18):
it's the end of the world. I don't like how
this stuff goes. Lane Kivin is Actually he was there
six years. That's a long time in college football. And
as much as no one likes him leaving and going
to a conference school, the fact is that players now
can go to conference schools. They just can. The timing

(14:43):
of it is awful. The calendar sucks. That can be
changed and fixed, and many of these things can be remedied. Additionally,
if you fix the transfer portal, and here's how you
fix it, you have to sit out a year when
you transfer. If you do that, all of these things.
The coaching moves aren't that big a thing. They're just not.

Speaker 5 (15:09):
Do.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
I think he's the world's greatest coach now. I think
he's done a really good job of resurrecting a career
that used to be a punch line and he's made himself.
He's figured it out. That's awesome, and he's going to
a place that has endless resources. You may feel empty
if you do win at LSU, because it's a win.
All they want to do is win. They don't care

(15:30):
about process or anything else. They don't care about who
they do it with or how it goes. But I
absolutely think he should have been allowed to coach his
team again. If nothing else, it gives Old Miss the
best chance to win, and the likelihood of Old Miss
being in this position anytime in the next ten years

(15:51):
fifteen years is not strong. He got a chance to
win national championship. Let the coach win national championship, and
if he wants to leave, he can leave. Don't think
it's heart. He's still gonna recruit players off your roster.
All those same kids. Now they lose, they be like man,
I should have we should have kept Blaine. I'm gonna
go coach with the play with LA.

Speaker 4 (16:08):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
It's a Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Let's uh, let's catch up with Tom Tellusco. He joined
us on a weekly basis the for eleven years, the
gentlem manager of the San Diego then La Charges and
of course, most recently last year, the GM for the
Las Vegas Raiders. He joined us every week here on
the show. Let's let's let's start with last night. The

(16:44):
Broncos have gone from worst to first, and they've done
it with a pretty soft schedule. They've done it with
an offense which is which has been up and down
to say the least, but they did escape with a win.
What are your impressions of the Broncos now? Is recreeping
closer and closer towards them, you know, putting a lot
of pressure on the FC West or the AFC Total
where they could be the number one seed.

Speaker 5 (17:06):
Yeah, I'm not surprised. They have one of the best
rosters in the league on both sides of the ball.
They have an outstanding defense, they can rush the passer,
they can cover in the back end, and bough Knicks
has played really good football. He's been consistent. He's out
standing in the red zone, which is one of the
harder places for a young quarterback to be successful, just
because all the your space is just so limited and tight,

(17:27):
so you've got to be very accurate with the football.
And he's playing outstanding ball. And Sean Payton knows how
to get a team ready to play and they know
how to play in the fourth quarter when it turns
in the situational football. He's one of the best that
I've been around as far as how we handle the
team and works on those situations. And you're seeing that
this year in the fourth quarter with how they play.
And they're in a difficult division, but they're right now,

(17:51):
they're head and shoulders above everybody else right now in
the NFCO West.

Speaker 1 (17:54):
Yeah, it sure seems to appear that way. What what's
happened with the Chiefs? What's going so wrong with the Chiefs?

Speaker 5 (18:03):
You know, there's a there's a couple of things.

Speaker 1 (18:06):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (18:06):
And you know, the one thing that you know, people
don't talk about a lot with the Chiefs is their defense.
Their defense is outstanding. The last couple of years, it's
not quite playing as both that has the last couple uh,
not getting the same type of pass rush up front,
and then you flip that to the offense and I
can't put my finger on it, but they're just not
manufacturing enough big plays, which is hard to imagine with

(18:28):
with Mahomes as your quarterback, with the amount of speed
they have a receiver, they still have a you know,
Travis Kelsey is still a savvy tight end who can
make some big plays, and and they have Andy Reid
as their offensive coordinator. But you know, most of their
drives are just kind of grinded out, long play drives,
which is nothing wrong with that, but they're just not
getting the explosives that they've gotten in the past. And

(18:50):
a little bit of the problem is the offensive line.
They don't they're not protecting very well on the edges,
and some of the interior players aren't playing at the
same level they've played in the past. But they're not
getting supposed to play from the offense. And defensively, then
they had the ability to really shut some people down,
especially in the second half, and we're not seeing that
as much this year.

Speaker 1 (19:09):
Stug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. That's the
voice of Tom to LESCo. Okay, let's let's let's kind
of scout a shot a little around the league. Bryce Young,
what's changed.

Speaker 5 (19:25):
I don't know if anything's changed. I mean, he's been
he's been up and down this year. He's had some
upstanding games. He's thrown for you know, three hundred and
four hundred plus yards, and he's had some games where
with a low completion percentage and thrown for about one
hundred and ten and twenty yards. And really their team
has been up and down. This is why, thank god,
I don't you know bet on football games and sports
in general, because they're hard team to figure out. They're

(19:47):
ups and downs and their wins and their losses and
how they've played. But what Bryce Young has and he's
always had very quick guys, can make quick decisions, and
he can get the ball out of his hands, and
when he's at his best, he can controls a game
like a point guard, just kind of moving, keep moving
a team down the field. He's top, he's unfazed. Now,
does he have the the escapability and the size and

(20:09):
the strength of the pocket and the arm strength that
you typically seeing a franchise quarterback. He doesn't have those traits,
but he has those traits from the neck up as
far as finding open receivers and Dave Canals have done
outstanding job with the whole team actually, even going back
to last year with how he handled the Bright Young
situation where they set him down for a couple of
weeks and run him back, and by they I mean

(20:31):
Bryce Young handlered it really well too. That's a hard
position to put a number one draft stick into. But
Dave Canalis has done an outstanding job with this team
and Bryce Young has improved, he has gotten better. They
stilln't even have enough weapons for him. Yet they do
have two good running backs. They can lean on those
guys to run it with Dowdell and Chewba Hubber chub
Bhubbers are really good back. He was injured earlier this year,

(20:51):
but he's a big time runner. But you're seeing, you know,
when they get things right and they protect up front,
Bryce Young can move the football and h We'll see
how it plays out there.

Speaker 1 (21:00):
US of the Year, let's go back to some of
his Thursday games. Tom Tellusco is our guest, the former
gen manager Chargers Raiders spend lifetime in the Nation Football
League Baltimore. Why isn't Lamar Jackson playing better?

Speaker 5 (21:15):
You know, I don't. I just wonder if he does
have some sort of injury right now. It's just it's
not common for quarterbacks to take rest days. So he
either has an acute injury or there's something chronic going
on that he just needs to time off. So if
that's the case, then you know the fact that he's
not running or scrambling at the explosive amount that he
used to. Maybe that could play a part of it,

(21:37):
but offensively, it's really been it's running game and then
throw to the tight ends. And they really haven't gotten
the receivers involved as much as I think they probably
what they would like to, just in terms of even targets.
The Flowers only had two catches the other day, but
Rashod Bateman really wasn't involved a whole lot, and they

(21:59):
just don't have any and DeAndre Hopkins, I think you
had two catches, So the receivers aren't getting a lot
of work. I love Mark Andrews. He's a big part
of their offense, and their running game is very good,
but you know, to kind of pull it all together,
it's got to be everybody to have to be able
to get the ball in the perimeter. Safe Flowers is
more of an inside slot. It can get open whenever
he needs to, but he's not a bigger, taller outside receiver,

(22:22):
so their offense has been a little bit stuck on
the outside. So we'll see how it plays out for
the rest of the year, you know, and Lamar has
to be healthy to be where he needs to be.
Like I said, you don't typically see a lot of
quarterbacks taking rest days sometimes to get their armor break
a little bit, but to have a regular scheduled rest day,
to me kind of it's kind of just indicate something
is going on. But offensively, they're just struggling in a

(22:44):
passing game, you know, getting the ball downfield, and that's
going to have to improve. They're still in it and
their division, there's no doubt they're still in this and
their defenses can still be strong, but they're gonna have
to keep coming along on offense.

Speaker 1 (22:55):
What does the Bears spin over the Eagles that say
were about the Bears the Eagles.

Speaker 5 (23:00):
I really like what the Bears are doing, and it's
you know, everyone talked about Keela Williams the whole offseason,
but you know, there's an identity on this football team.
It's running the football and running it very well. Up front.
I think Ryan Poles is a tremendous job really rebuilding
the offensive line. They acquired Jonah Jackson from the Rams,
who Ben Johnson knew when he was with the Lions,

(23:21):
and Jonah Jackson did not pan out very well with
the Rams. He had a long injury history. He's come
to gout to the Bears and he's been healthy number
one and played very well. And they brought Joe Toney
in from the Chiefs, Joe Touney as a stud he
still is even at his age, and the Senator Drew Donwan.
They gave big money tune for Agcy and he has
played extremely well the same way he did with the Falcons,

(23:44):
as he did as he is now with the Bears,
and that's big. The center position is so critical on
the offensive line. To me, it's more important than the
left tackle. He makes everything go up front. So they're
running the ball at a really strong rate. And it
was more than just Thursday. They've been doing this for
the last four or five weeks as far as to
be on the up side of the ball running the football.
Caleb makes them play too, and the defense is played solid.

(24:07):
So this team, if they keep coming along, they're built
the punting elements and they'll be built for playoff football
depending on where they see when they get there. But
I thought he the a heck of the job on
on Thursday, or actually it was Friday.

Speaker 1 (24:21):
Matt Lafloor suddenly is it's like it's like riverboat run, right,
Mattlafloor goes from being super conservative to going forward on
fourth down and is rewarded in that win. But when
you sit back and you look at Detroit and the Packers,
the Packer's sweeping the Lions. What's your biggest takeaway?

Speaker 5 (24:39):
The Lions just aren't flaring in all cylinders right now.
And you've seen the last couple of weeks on offense,
it just doesn't look natural. They were a little bit
better against green Bay, didn't turn it over, but it
just doesn't feel natural still. And and you know green
Bay has an excellent offense, but but you know, golf
still miss He missed some throws and it just felt
like again, they were just more kind of like more

(25:01):
calling plays than having a really system up a group
system up front. And look at the close game. And
when you have Jordan Love as your quarterback and some
of the offensive playmakers that have it allows you to
be a little bit more aggressive. And they like their
game plan going in obviously, but those are some balls
for fourth down calls. But we're kind of seeing green

(25:22):
Bay come a lot eight and three right now. You know,
they had their little roll in the middle of the year,
the offensive line was struggling a little bit. The offensive
live is playing better right now. Jordan Love is a
franchise quarterback and the key right now is that you
want to hit your pace when he gets to December,
and that's what Green Bay is doing right now.

Speaker 1 (25:39):
No question about it. What about the Cowboys, I just again,
I know they're not great, but they're trending in the
right way and they're way better, way better than at
least I would have thought, and most fans thought, what's
your reaction?

Speaker 5 (25:54):
How while the Cowboys are playing, Yeah, it's pretty It's
been pretty cool to watch, I think because we knew
going into the year that their offense is going to
be very strong, and I felt very strongly about that.
Dak Tuscott is when he's healthy, he's one of the
best quarterbacks in the league. They have plenty of weapons
to throw it on the perimeter and of the tight
ends with Ferguson, so felt like confident they were going

(26:16):
to score points. The big thing was, obviously, can they
stop anybody on the other side of the ball, And
they've added a lot of players to help that Now.
I think as the year goes on, you know, a
good coaching stat can make adjustment and see where the
weaknesses are. They start to work on those and try
and turn them into a strength, or at least try
and hide some weaknesses. But obviously adding Kenny Clark, adding

(26:36):
Quinny Williams, there are two big time players in the
middle bring it or getting back to Marion overshow and
gives them some range and feed a linebacker and some coverability.
Bringing Clowney in just in a role has helped them,
I think. And they've got a corner of Shannon ravel
who just came off into the reserve. We're starting to
play a little bit. He was injured in the draft

(26:56):
last year. I felt he was the first round corner.
It's help when he came out in the draft. So
you know, during the season their pro scouting department and
front office, have you brought in a good amount of
players that they've hit on and are playing at a
higher level. And it's helped the defense. So we'll see
if this can keep up. I still think the defense
has their holes, but the offensive they can score enough

(27:17):
points and the defense keeps improving like they've had, they've
got a chance. I mean, if they're a little bit
behind at six and five, But we st don't have
a chance here down the stretch.

Speaker 1 (27:26):
Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Tom Telesco
is our guest. Course, Tom former general manager of the
Chargers for eleven years and the Raiders most recently. I'd
be remiss if I didn't ask you about the Steelers.
They went all in on this year. Look, they're tracking
to be right at or above five hundred or whatever,

(27:47):
but man, not great energy, not great pass rush. And
then Aaron Rodgers says, hey, you got to show up
for film sessions. If you're a wide receiver. What's your
read on what's going on in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 5 (28:00):
Well, going into the year, you could see they were
built for the short term. You know, they were the
second oldest team going into the season, and that's more
than just Aaron Rodgers, and that's how they built it
for this year. But there's just enough holes on offense. Right,
I thought their defense was going to be outstanding and
it hasn't been. Now, you know, some of the blame
has to go to the offense. They're not on the

(28:21):
field very much. I mean they ran forty three plays yesterday,
which is on average. You know, you run about sixty
five plays and they ran forty three, had ten completions,
So not converting our third down, not staying on the
field put the defense on for a lot of snaps yesterday.
And the Steelers once they got down by two scores
the Buffalo they're just not built for a straight drop

(28:41):
back team. They don't pass protect well enough, and Aaron
Rodgers doesn't quite have the mobility that he used to have.
So you know, they're in a tough spot if they
must have the lead, and they can run the ball
a little bit, so you know what's going on behind
the scenes. You know, you'd like to keep those behind
the scenes and handle that behind the scenes, whatever that
may be. But look, the division they're in, it's still

(29:03):
up for grabs, and they do have a very good defense.
They can't stop people. They showed it a couple of
weeks ago where everyone thought their defense was back was
not quite back yet. I think Mike tom Win even
said that, you know, you're not not quite back yet,
but we were playing better. But they're gonna have to
get more from from just from the offense, just staying
on the field and and and you know, give another
defensive chance, right now.

Speaker 1 (29:24):
Uh, Tom, the New York Giants, You've you've done a
lot of hiring in the league in terms of hiring
head coaches. Who should the Giants hire in your opinion?

Speaker 5 (29:34):
Oh, Man, I don't know. I would say this if
you're probably looking at more an experienced head coach. I
think in this situation that than a first time I coached.
You know, coaching in New York is difficult. I think
it would probably help them to have someone that would
a little bit of a track record and background. Think
it's a really good job for a number of different reasons.
I think it's an outstanding front office and ownership group.

(29:56):
I mean, it's family run, it's the New York Giants,
which is an historic team, and they have a lot
of talent. They have a lot of talent on defense.
They didn't play like it, but you know, when you
look at individually, they have talent on defense for coming
back for next year. And they have a quarterback with
Jackson Dirt. So there's a lot of things to build around,
a lot of positive things. I'm sure they'll they'll cast

(30:17):
a wide net. I wouldn't get too hung up on
an offense or defense or special teams. Coach background, you know,
you need a leader number one and someone who can
kind of bring it all together. Now if it's if
it's a defensive background cutting head coach, you know, obviously
the first question god answer is you know who's gonna
run your offense and and we're gonna bring it as
your coordinator. But you got to find a leader first.

(30:40):
And I wouldn't be surprised if they kind of go
their route of the more experienced head coach than the
first time.

Speaker 1 (30:45):
McCarthy.

Speaker 5 (30:47):
I think it'd be tremendous. I think he's a outstanding
head coach. I think it fit perfectly. You know, if
all things being equal in the situation, I'd rather have
an offensive side of the ball head coach with with
Jackson Dart and Mike McCarthy a proven truck record of
winning football games and putting together a really good program
that you think that'd be a home run.

Speaker 1 (31:06):
Last thing, Shador, I'll give you my opinion. You know,
the one touchdown pass was after a drive when they
ran the ball I think eight trade times. The issue
is he's okay. I don't think he's the guy. I
just don't know how you keep him on the roster.
With all the noise around him. If he's going to

(31:26):
be a backup, right like, he can only make it
if he's a starter. I don't think he's good enough
to be the long term starter. Again, not necessarily because him,
but because of all the noise that follows him, and
he can't have noise that follows your backup quarterback, especially
when you're very likely to draft somebody high in the draft.

Speaker 5 (31:44):
Well, I think he has started a trade to be
a starter in the NFL. It's hard to tell off
the two games where exactly that's going to go. But
I think the one thing that people are missing right
now with the Browns offense, it doesn't matter who the
quarterback is right now, they don't have to infer structure
for really anybody to succeed at the high level. So
it's not a very good offensive line. They struggle at

(32:05):
tackle their interior three or old and the offensive line
wise it doesn't give him. There's a lot of times
I'm heating, Like people like to complain that he will
he backs out of the back end of the pocket
and doesn't step up, But yeah, he does do that sometimes,
but there's a lot of times he can't step up
because the middle of the pockets being crushed down, so
and they just don't have a lot of they don't
have enough playmakers on offense. They're two best playmakers are

(32:27):
two rookies, Harold's Fan and Judkins, and there's they're gonna
be excellent players. They're really good players right now, but
there just isn't enough talent around him on the offensive
line and at the skill positions they really know whoever,
whether it's Gabriel or Sanders or even when Pocket was playing.
So so that's going to have to be something in
the off season. Is gonna have to keep improving on

(32:48):
it to whoever that quarterback is. But washing him play,
I've watch him play the last couple of weeks. The
ball does jump off his hand. Is he's seeing things
really clearly? Yet No, he's not. He's a young rookie
quarterback and he's not processing it as quickly as you
would like right now. But he is accurate, he can
get the ball out, got a little pizzazz in his game.
So it'd be great to see him continue to play

(33:09):
the rest of the year. But again, the talent is
around him needs to be upgraded just as much.

Speaker 1 (33:14):
Oh okay, so but let me ask you, as a
general manager, based upon what you've seen. Granted we have
you know, you got more games to see and more
games to see, But based on what you've seen, if
you can get an elite quarterback in the draft, or
you can build around Shador and trade that pick or

(33:34):
draft other spots and build an offensive line, what would
you do.

Speaker 5 (33:39):
Well, you just said if you can, and you know
they won't know in February or March or earlier April
if they can. Yet it's not a real strong quarterback draft.
We still have to see what quarterbacks from this year
will declare for the draft and who will decide to
go back to school. I think that's bigger than ever
right now with nil where a quarterback can stay in
and still make really good money and keep improving and

(33:59):
not have to leave for the draft or the money.
But on top of that, it's just not a real
strong draft to quarterback position. So I think you need
more options than less options. And if you end up
drafting a quarterback, I think you still need them. There,
you need more than one, and you keep working through it. Now,
is there gonna be noise with it? There probably will
be noise but look, we're professional head coaches, we're professional

(34:23):
general manager and play offices, and that's what you're paid
to handle.

Speaker 1 (34:27):
Awesome stuff. Tom to LESCo, former general manager of the
Raiders and Chargers, Hope you had a great Thanksgiving, Happy holidays.
Thanks for me our guess. This is always.

Speaker 5 (34:34):

Speaker 1 (35:08):
Hey, Dan buyer, what's the game today?

Speaker 5 (35:09):
Doug?

Speaker 4 (35:10):
The game today is big deal, little deal, no deal.

Speaker 2 (35:14):
Big deal, little deal or no deal. That Chargers quarterback
Justin Herbert has a fractured left hand.

Speaker 1 (35:19):
A big deal, right. This guy he gets hurt every year,
but he'll play through it if he can. He's a stud, big, big, deal.

Speaker 2 (35:27):
Do you comp this is Chargers curse or not?

Speaker 1 (35:30):
No, only you can't play in the next game, then
it's hurst.

Speaker 2 (35:32):
And he said yesterday he would play a week from
tonight against the Eagles on Monday Night. Football. All right, Doug,
big deal, little deal or no deal. That Klanie Sataki
of BYU is Penn State's target to replace James Franklin.

Speaker 1 (35:45):
A big deal. Love Kalanie Sataki, right, like if you can.
I know BYU has a lot of money, but there
are the other restrictions to keep from recruiting like Penn
State real big boy football. I don't know. I don't
know anybody who doesn't like or respect Colonie Sataki. He's awesome.

Speaker 2 (35:58):
Big deal, big deal, little deal or no deal that
Texas had football couch. Steve Sarkisian says they will reconsider
scheduling scheduling schools like Ohio State in the non conference
schedule if they're left out of the College Football Playoff.

Speaker 1 (36:12):
Uh, little deal, he said, they will consider. I mean,
keep in mind SEC only has eight conference games, so
it's the ninth, but it's definitely Look, it's a big
time game and if they don't get in, I do
understand if they have two losses and they played anybody
else and they won, they'd be in the College Fall Playoff.

Speaker 2 (36:33):
And big deal, little deal of no deal that Green
Bay is ranked one hundred and ninety ninth in the
first net rankings of the season.

Speaker 1 (36:39):
No deal, nobody cares. At the end of the year,
what's your rank? Nine games in? Feels good, but nobody cares.
No deal, And that's game time.

Speaker 4 (36:50):
Game This is game time on The Gottlief Show.
