At Farmers dot com. We are Farmers. Hey, welcome in
a lot to get to um. Let's start with your
raid is that's right, Let's start with the Raiders. Last
(01:07):
night was Hard Knocks, and it gave us a little
bit like just a taste there's no little nibble of
the mess that is Antonio Brown so far. We'll have
the director of Hard Knocks in the last hour of
the show, so we'll ask him how much of this
(01:29):
is what they knew, and how much of it did
they cut because that the team asked them to cut it,
and how much of it was look, they just didn't
know and all this stuff was going on behind the scenes.
We'll find out those answers here later on on the
Doug Gottlib Show. But I'm fascinated by what this actually
means to the team right where he's still not a
(01:50):
full go and then you factor in the stories that
he's not been engaged in meetings, that he's not as
as good a leader as some would want you to believe.
You know, it doesn't work out. The whole thing with
Antonio Brown is bad. When he gets out there, he
works out so hard, and then the stories this weekend
we're like, yeah, not really so much, not even all
(02:12):
that much. Actually he's kind of been a jerk. Yeah,
And even if he runs hard when he's running routes.
So when he's working out, part of being you know,
the highest paid receiver in the room and learning a
new offense is totally buying into the team and helping
everybody out and understanding where you're supposed to be and
(02:32):
why you're supposed to mean. They're not just having meetings
to have meetings. I did. I worked at a place
once that meetings to have meetings. It wasn't fun. But
even those meetings you have to engage in. You have
to engage in. But um, I heard this part of
Hard Knocks. Stick with me for a second. I said
(02:54):
this Friday, and the Herd and Raider fans came at
me on Twitter like, you don't know any watch Hard Knocks.
It doesn't like I actually have. I've talked to people.
I understand what they're trying to do here. Remember Antonio
Brown's contract essentially a two year deal. They had trade
for him. They offered him a bigger deal than probably
they had to, but in their mind, they did not
(03:18):
have the weaponry last year. A matter of fact, this
was Lincoln Kennedy. This is Lincoln Kennedy earlier today in
The Herd talking about last year as opposed to this year.
The fact is that the money they would have to
pay for to keep Khalil Mack. They went on they
got Antonio Brown and Trent Brown, just the name two uh,
(03:38):
and it addressed the need they needed speed at the
wide receiver because they didn't have depth. But they went on.
They addressed in the right tackle. You know, last year
Derek Carr took its lig took his licks because he
had to, mainly because he had two rookie UH tackles
on on both sides, especially in that division. Yeah, so
they went out and they said, look, we're not that
(03:58):
good and no order to keep the guys we have,
we're gonna have to overspend. So let's get rid of
the guys we have, get more assets and try and
put better players around Derek Carr. It's interesting so watching
hard Knocks and when I said Friday was like, look,
the Antonio Brown thing is frustrating, but it's most frustrating
(04:20):
because you brought in two new wide receivers and number
one and number two in effort to see what do
I got from Derek Carr last year was not great,
but he consistently answered the bell and has shown the
desire to be a leader and worked and worked and
work and appears to be having a good camp. But
all of that doesn't matter if he cannot improve and
(04:43):
evolve and mature and become a franchise quarterback with the
likes of Tyroe Williams and Antonio Brown. And we have
no idea because we haven't seen Antonio Brown enough. Here's
Jon Gruden with the broadcast crew, Brent Musburg in the
broadcast group for the preseason game him. Listen to what
he has to say. We said, how do we get
there a car to be a blue chip quarterback? Well,
(05:06):
it's let's get him some targets. Let's go get uh
Tyrone Williams and free agency and let's hope we get
Antonio Brown. Yeah. I mean, essentially, they didn't think he
was a blue chip quarterback unless he was surrounded by
blue chip players, which is the opposite of what blue
chip quarterbacks are supposed to do. Blue chip quarterbacks. Was
(05:26):
the raise up the level of the town around him
that the Tom Brady's I mean Tom Brady's obviously, but
I mean you could say the same thing about Drew Brees,
Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers. You know, is Keenan Allen that good?
Or does Philip Rivers make Keenan Allen that good? But
(05:47):
Antonio Brown couldn't run. I mean Antonio Gates couldn't run
the last seven years he's with the Chargers, but somehow
he had a guy who threw it to just the
right spot where a guy who could not outrun any
linebackers was just open enough. I mean Andrew Luck in
his career, look at who he's been surrounded by in
the number of wins that he's had. The True Blue Chippers.
(06:09):
You're starting to describe Derek Carr like he's Dak Prescott,
is he is he a good quarterback? Yeah, but he's
a really good quarterback and he has really good players
around him. So I mean Andy Dalton, same thing. So
it's fair to say that they all do work in concert.
(06:31):
But it's also fair to say that one of the
big frustrations, and there's a bunch an Tonio Brown is
an offensive guy. John Gruden's an offensive guy, and Tonio
Brown was the big move they made, and his off
the field nonsense, locker room nonsense was one of the
things that kind of got him run out of Pittsburgh.
Like there's a multitude of reasons that they're ticked and
disappointed and it's caused it to be a circus. And
(06:54):
now there's the helmet and all the stupidity, but the
biggest part was, Hey, we're trying to spend this year
evaluating whether or not Derek Carr gets to go to Vegas.
His contracts essentially up at the end of the season.
They can get out of the Derek Carr business. They
choose to not try to get into the Kyler Murray business.
But we'll see, Like there's the there's uh, there's twa
(07:19):
there's other quality quarterbacks, the kid at Oregon, and so
there are options out there for the Raiders, especially with
multiple first round picks, if they decided to move on
from Derek Carr, but they can't decide until they see
him with Antonio Brown. And guess what, they haven't seen
him with Antonio Brown. Are they frustrated? Yes? Do they
(07:41):
have every right to be your damn right? And the
most interesting and probably salacious story is Antonio Brown. But
the real story is Derek Carr. Right, Like, you're you're
not going to win unless you have a blue chip
(08:02):
quarterback with the Raiders, like they put a ton into
him unless he's good enough. And while they don't think
he's good enough on his own, they're hopefully he can
be good enough when surrounded by elite level talent, but
they won't know until that elite level talent heals their
feet and figures out what bonnet they want to wear
(08:23):
on Sundays at Oakland Alameda. Alright. Coming up next, Will
Brinson joins the show. He's the NFL Inside will get
his thoughts on the Raiders. We'll also get his thoughts
on the Texans who suddenly now are trying to trade
Jadevian Clowney, even though there are many teams with UH
(08:44):
with the cap space to trade for him and they
can't resign him if you do trade for him. Now,
what happened to the former number one overall pick? Where
will he play? Next? We'll discuss. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Doug Dot Leaps Show week days
at noon Eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
and the I Heart Radio Whip. All Right, I'm told
(09:06):
that there's audio of Jerry Jones. I haven't heard it.
I just want to react to it. Right, So this
is raw audio. Jerry Jones play it of a car
and you had a rick in your hand, was almost
severed off, but you didn't understand your anatomy. You look down,
(09:27):
you're spurting blood. You open the door and run to
the woods and either die bleeding to death or shock.
Educated man looks down, knows his anatomy, squeezes, and knows
his best chances to wait for help. That's because he's
been there a lot and done and so I'm waiting.
(09:47):
I'm squeezing and I'm waiting. Prowl Okay, right, So he's
squeezing and he's waiting for help. I think what that means.
I think is that time is on the side of
(10:08):
the cowboys. That's what I believe he means. I'm not
positive on it, but that's what I believe he means.
Time is on their side. There's absolutely no rush. This
is what he wants to do, and ultimately the deal
would get done because otherwise they're bidding against themselves. And
(10:30):
I think that's a completely reasonable way of looking at it.
Completely music. Do you think the same? Is that? What?
What did? What do you take from that? Weird? Yeah?
I guess that's what it means. Um. I took it
more as don't rush into making a decision and panic
(10:53):
and instead think twice about what you want to do
and do the smart thing, not the thing that you
think of first, which I guess is similar to what
you were saying. But do you think do you think
having to answer questions every day about contracts is slowly,
slowly wearing on him? Uh? How old do you think
(11:14):
Jerry Jones is? Sight I'm gonna go with go over
and under on that one. I'm gonna go slightly under.
I think that that feels older than he really is.
I don't know why. Uh, yeah, he's seventy six years old,
so like he's young and virile for seventy six, but
he's still seventy six. And if every day you're trying
(11:35):
to say something clever, then this is what happens, right,
This is what happens. Um. I don't think. I don't
think he's being worn down. I just think this is
what happens when you cover a guy every single day
that he'll say something that you're like, I don't get it.
(11:56):
I don't get it. And that's kind of that's where
we are with this. So when he goes into some
bizarre analogy, like look, if I told you it was
a bizarre analogy from from a billionaire NBA owner, you
would say, Um, you know, you would say, Okay, that
sounds a little weird. But if I were to say,
(12:20):
all right, he's seventies six years old, he's in front
of the camera every single day, you would go, okay,
that kind of makes sense. That kind of makes sense.
So that's the way I look at it is is
it odd? Sure? Does it make sense to him? Probably?
Does it make sense to everybody else? Not? Really? Can
(12:44):
he get away with it? Yes? Why is Jerry Jones?
And you know he's talked to the media so many
times almost ad nauseam that, um, you give him a
path because you know, oh, grandpa wants you know, his
(13:05):
Jared Tald Grandpa wants to see Wabner. This guy is old.
He's been talking in front of the media for a
long long time. And when you speak in front of
media that much, you'll make an analogy that doesn't make sense. Look,
I do analogies daily. Do they all make sense? Well? Yeah,
of course they do, because I'm really good at it.
But also I work them out in the car when
I'm driving here and when I talked to Ryan Music,
(13:27):
try and try and make to make sense where I'm
not sure that you know he does that. So anyway,
that's what I think. That's my take on it. You know,
here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna play it for
Will Brinson from CBS Sports and we'll see if he
(13:53):
can figure out exactly what this analogy means. Right, this
is Jerry Jones earlier today, Will of a car and
you had a rick in your hand, was almost severed off,
but you didn't understand your anatomy. You look down, you're
spurting blood. You opened the door and run to the
(14:14):
woods and either die bleeding to death or shocked. Educated
man knows his anatomy, squeezes and knows his best chance
is to wait for help. That's because he's been there
a lot and done. And so I'm waiting. I'm squeezing
and white and trail. Will any idea what he's talking about?
(14:38):
I got nothing. This guy's insane. This is like the
time you started talking about circumcising mosquitoes. There's a way
to solve problems, and just doesn't like maybe it's a
technist thing and I just don't get it. But that
is not the analogy that I look and think. All right,
that makes so much sense. Now I know what Jerry's
talking about. It almost applies that at some point in
(15:00):
his life he's been sitting in a car bleeding out
and rans in the woods and and learned his lesson
about not running to the woods. The whole thing is
very confusing. Yeah, I think he I think what he's
saying is time he believes is on his side, right,
and then if he just waits that eventually you'll play
out in their favor. What do you think ultimately becomes
(15:20):
of all his contract talk and the Zeke hold out
all told what happens in Dallas, Yeah, I mean, I
think part of the problem is with Zeke. You know,
that's a that's a game that Zeke's gonna have to
play in terms of chicken and decide whether or not
he's willing to lose money to skip a bunch of
time and maybe regular season games, um and and to
(15:42):
see if the Cowboys lose the games and he can
leverage that into a big new deal for that Pratt
Scott and Mary Cooper, this isn't a hard decision for me.
If I'm down during your final year for contract, just
play out your contract, play really well, and then either
you're gonna get franchise. I've been trying to leverage end
to a longer term deal or you're gonna hit the
(16:03):
margin as an undrestricted free agent and you're gonna make
piles among them. And you know, if you're back in
the Maori and either one of you gets the deal done,
the Cowboys can only use one tag, which means one
of them is going to get to the market. So
to me, I'm not taking below market money if I'm
Dak Prescott because I saw what Carson went Scott, and
(16:24):
I know I've been healthier than Carson Wentz. I don't
have a fifth year option, and I believe that I'm
worth more. So you know, the Zekelly thing is still
a little tricky, but Dack in the market, that's easy
for me. Yeah, I kind of tend to agree with you,
but well, we'll see if that's the way it plays out. Um.
I want to ask about Andrew Luck now they're GM.
Chris Bowler's come out and said, like, look, it's a
(16:46):
high ankle sprain. Like it, we keep it. It's a
moving target. It's a it's a moving target. With Andrew Luck.
Does he play Week one of the season against the Chargers? Uh?
You know, I don't know. I would I would bet
the Chargers minus three right now, though I think it's
pretty good value if Andrew Luck ends up not playing.
(17:06):
I mean, what I don't really understand, Doug is how
I mean, I'm trying to understand it. I just don't
how you can go from a calf strain to a
high ankle injury that involves, according to Jim Mercy, a
small little bone or whatever he's talking about. We were
alled to believe that this culture regime was doing things
(17:29):
above board, was being more honest, is being more forthright
about the injuries and how they're handling the quarterback. Then
they got in your Luck back in shape, and now
it feels like two thousand seventeen again, albeit with a
different part of the body. I mean, what are we
doing here? If your calf is hurting you and it's strain,
stop messing around, sit down and and and be patient.
(17:51):
You know the system you played all last year. You
know all the receivers in there. You don't you don't
need to practice, you need to be healthy, and they
have to cover for sets. So there probably all right.
They have a good offensive line and some good running backs.
Defense is pretty good last year. They should regress to
the mean a little bit this year. But I mean,
Andrew Luck can't miss more games. This is this is
(18:12):
now practiced by of the colts, And to go from
a cap strain into a high ankle sprain is not
the sort of injury progression you expect to see. Agreed,
completely agreed, and um it just the idea that this
happened in April and it's still hurting him. That's the
one also, And that's the one that's like, all right,
(18:32):
if he just sprained his ankle started camp, I get it,
but like we're in August. We're in August. But explain
to me how you go from a I just don't
understand how you go from a cap strain to a
high ankle sprain. I mean, like, is it the same leg?
Was he putting weight on it the wrong way and
it just collapsed and he sprained his ankle? Why do
(18:53):
why why did you not mention this ankle sprain before?
It's just not it's just not how that injury progresses.
I don't think. And if his cap is strained that bad,
then you get him up the field before he can
sprain his ankle. If it just doesn't make all of sense.
Will Brinson joining us CBS Sports. Um, this came down
kind of yesterday, and it's not a surprise Geveon clown
(19:15):
he's holding out, he's franchise tagged, they have no general manager.
But the more you look into this, like, I don't
know how you can trade him now. This is not
a Khalil Max situation because he's tendered right now, and
because the time of year, you can't re sign him
to a long term contract right and so essentially whoever
(19:36):
trades for him, it's gonna be a sign in trade,
but like a one year rental. So the Texans have
massively screwed this thing up if they intend to trade
him now as opposed to waiting to next offseason. What
ends up happening with j Devion Clowney. Yeah, that's the best.
We saw. Frank Clark and p Ford right get traded
(19:57):
as scranchise tagg as rushers in this class too, And
the teams who traded them did it before the draft
when you knew you'd get a draft pick in compensation,
So that way you're getting back the player who can
help you now who's own the cheap rookie deal. Um.
You know the Chiefs, they get a pick for people
back later, Seahawks going back now. Um. But the team
(20:20):
that you're giving him to values it more because, as
you point out, before July fifteenth, you can sign these
guys who as contractor decision. After July fifteenth, no one
can until the end of the season. And to the
only method of retaining to Davon Clowney for the Technics
or for anybody else would be the tagg him a
second time at a the tag And do you think
(20:42):
that that to Daveon Clowney is gonna be like more
inclined to sign a cheaper cost friendly deal a uniform
now he's been tagged at the second time. No way.
And if he doesn't have a good year, then you're
when you're in a really rough spot because he's an
understrict of free agent that you don't want to give
that hug too. I can't imagine why a team would
(21:05):
be willing to trade for him without assurances from his agent,
Bus Cook that they can get a deal done. But
that has to be done a year in advance, and
there's no way that an agent then the team can
agree to that because so much could happen because you know,
like like just let's say the I don't know the
bill she were rumored, but Tim Graham said that that's
(21:27):
not gonna happen, Like you know, Brandon Bean's not gonna
camera and a deal with bus Cook and then hold
you know, hold him to it if if you have
Conny breaks his leg in December and this is the
you know, it's the sort of thing it's not tenable
in the NFL. So the Technics have kind of put
themselves in a really bad spot. If they trade him,
they're gonna get pennies on the dollar for what they
could have gotten, and it's gonna severely weaken their defense
(21:50):
and and make JJ Watt pretty mad. What do you
take on Antonio Brown not just the feat but the
helmet and then the reports that he's disengaged in many
of these meetings. You know, the Steelers are a really
smart organization and they dealt one of the top five
is not the best wide receiver in the NFL for
(22:12):
a third round pick, and they did so while taking
on a million dollar dead captain. That is not it's
not what you expect the Steelers to do. We've ridiculed
them when the deal happened, because it's like, well, they
just got you know, they got leverage by a Tonio Brown,
and the Raiders made a smart move. As it's turned out,
maybe they were ahead of the curve and realizing just
(22:33):
how insane INTERNI or Brown is. I think it's you know,
I get that the helmet thing is now solved. You know,
apparently Twitter has ten thousand air shoots whatever you know
that made it in the last ten years, so he's
probably good for life on those. Um. The problem for
me is the feat that you know, you hear him
talking on hard knocks about how he's like, you know,
(22:55):
the skin is very fresh, uh if you will, and uh,
and it feels like he's walking on a whoopee cushion.
All that is all that's concerning for his ability to
stay on the field. But I just don't see how
this doesn't end up resulting. And at some point in
the first four or five weeks of the season, John
Gruden just losing it and antnire Brown because he lost
(23:17):
it at Derek Carr because Derek car short hopping passes
at Brown speed. I mean, it just feels like this
is a very combustible situation. Brown, we know he is
willing to go up the rails no matter what his
contract is and no matter how many games the team
has won. And I just don't see how this ends
in a positive passion. I tend to agree with you,
(23:37):
but but we'll see. It is the Raiders, and they
have functioned in chaos pretty well before, and we don't
have super high expectations. What do you make of the
massive one eight that's happened in New York? We went
from Daniel Jones can't go to a Yankees game without
getting booed? Two? Why aren't we playing Daniel Jones and Benching?
(23:58):
Eli Manning, You're like, man, it can't go to a
Yankee game and not get food now, right? Um? Yeah,
it's it's the overreaction to one week in the preseason.
I think the great example to make right is look
at what the Redskins tips. They put Dwayne Haskins in there.
He looked pretty good in this first drive and then
threw some interceptions later. If they taken him out after
(24:19):
the first drive, I think we would have been like, oh,
Dwayne Hatkins has you know, showed the upside and the
maturity of a young draft pick to come in and
looked really sharp in that first drive. If the Giants
lead Daniel Jones and and if there's two picks, we're like, oh,
this is a terrible pick, and it's just we're itching
for football. We haven't seen real football action and multiple
(24:41):
games going on at once. There's that rush of the
red zone feel, red zone channel feel, and I think
it's an easy situation to overreact in Davie Jones look sharp,
Maybe maybe he could play some football. He was a
sixth overall pick. We probably overreacted in the draft. Um,
but I would say that we're probably a we're reacting
the other way now and it is best to sort
(25:03):
of punk the height brace. Let's see how the kid performs.
The Giants clearly don't want to play him as they
can play Eli. But if Eli stinks and Jones is great,
then it's gonna be. Uh, you better pink Eli situation
because your teams won in five and he's killing dude.
Will Brnson Johnny steps Sports covering the National Football League.
Last thing, you know, everybody inside that that Carolina Panthers,
(25:25):
uh front office. What are early reports on Cam Newton's
ability to throw the football, which was which was hampered
last year by another shoulder injury. Yeah, I mean, I
think with Cam Newton, what we're looking at is it's
fascinating dog because if you watch how their social media
team and their PR team and everybody handles it, they're
(25:46):
releasing type videos that makes everybody think everything's going smoothly,
and then as soon as you get in the preseason,
he's on a pitch count. Now I think it's a
smart thing to do is to put him on a
pitch count because you don't need him going out there
and and and overthrowing are taking shots in week one
of the preseason. So I like that move and I
get it. I think right now, the front office and
(26:07):
the couragy staff was confident about Can's ability to play,
but they want to make sure he stays on the
schedule that they build up his strength, but they get
him out there at the right times. They minimize the
number of throws he's taking the preseason without building up
his strength, and I think they believe they'll get him
coasting into the into the regular season at the right
amount of strength that they follow this plan. And so
(26:29):
by doing that, I don't think there's a whole lot
of concern over Kims, at least short term ability to
be on the field for full sixteen games. Well, great
stuff has always love your input and your insight. Thanks
for joining us on Fox Sports Radio. Always a fun timebody.
Be sure to catch live editions of the Doug Dot
Leaps Show weekdays at noon Eastern three pm Pacific. Doug
(26:50):
Got Leaves Show rolls on here on Fox Sports Radio.
Um Levian Bell apparently is not going to play in
the preseason. From the New York Daily News quote, I
don't really necessarily need preseason reps. If I get them,
they'll help, but I don't think i'll need them. I
think once we get out there, football is football. I've
been playing for so long, naturally will come back to me.
(27:11):
I'll get adjusted to the game. In a couple of plays,
I'll be ready to go, right. That's not a very
arrogant statement, right, And a couple of plays, I'll be
ready to go right. I mean, you know, that's almost comical.
We know that that early season football games are now
(27:33):
used more as preseason games as as um as preseason
games continue to get um uh, you know, to get
shrunken in terms of the usage of these star players.
But Levion Bell didn't go to O t as, Levian
Bell didn't go to O t AS last year, didn't
(27:55):
go to preseason last year, didn't play a game last year,
was out of shape last year. So the idea that
he's around camp, he gets some reps, there's some live
reps or whatever, and I'll say he's gonna get into
an NFL game in the regular season and be the
same guy. M hm, yes, Yes, with a new quarterback,
(28:16):
a new coach, an entirely new offensive system, a new
offensive line, new knew everything, like literally everything is new,
and you're like, I'll be good, don't worry, We'll be fine.
The New York Jets open up against the Buffalo Bills,
and this is one of the things we're gonna start
(28:36):
doing here on a daily basis, is give you one
bet of the day, just one bet of the day. Now,
we'll still have our five for five, will still pick
our college games are pro games. We did very well
the last two years here. We've done very well just
about every year. But the the Jets are three point
favorites of the Buffalo Bills, and the Bills by all accounts,
(28:59):
they too have a young quarterback, Josh Allen, just his
second year. He started some last year. Bills are three
point dogs, which means neutral field. This is a pick
um game in the Meadowlands. It's a three point favorite.
The Bills have a very well respected defense, very well
respected defense. By the way, over under that game is
thirty eight and a half. They do not expect fireworks,
(29:21):
but we'll be giving you picks. You heard Will Brinson
talk about the l A Chargers only three point favorites
right now at home against the Colts. Now, part of
it is they don't have Melvin Gordon, but everyone believes
Melvin Gordon ultimately will show up. Andrew Luck ultimately will
be there. Will he be there Week one of the season,
(29:42):
will will be sharpened even if both of those things
don't happen. Like, Chargers are better than the Colts, and
they're at home, and I get that last year they
were better road team, but the Colts aren't a team
that they're not Kansas City, they're not the Steelers, they're
not the Raiders. They're not filling up that stadium. I
don't know. I'm looking at those two, well, those two
(30:05):
that Seattle line keeps cron climbing up. Remember I told
you was eight a couple of weeks ago. Seattle Cincinnati
since they completely depleted on that offensive line, and now
they lost their best player on offense as well. Oh,
Tampa Bay, by the way, one point favorite over the
Niners at home. That's a Fox game. Patriots are six
(30:26):
point favorites over the Steelers. That's the NBC Sunday Night game.
And you've got Raiders and Broncos, Texans and Saints as
part of Monday Night. There's some interesting games every day.
We'll give you one like, hey, I would bet on
this one, whether it's a game that night or a
game in the future, which the line has already appeared.
(30:47):
Bears Packers, by the way, kick it off? What is
it a couple weeks from tomorrow? September five, Green Bay,
Chicago in Chicago. Remember last year's Chicago Sunday Night football
got out what was it a seventeen nothing lead, only
to have the Packers come storming back. So I got
(31:08):
a bunch to get to. Doug gotlip show rolls on

I hope you're having a great day every day. This
time we like to get you caught up on stories today.
Allow a little political license to our guy, Dan Buyer.
This is game time side on the Doug Gottlieb Show,
(31:51):
d B Dan Bayer. What do you have for the
game today? Doug is real news? Fake new? Alright, real news,
your fake news that Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles will make
his preseason debut tomorrow against his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles.
I'm gonna sands real news. You are fake news and
his fake news head coach Doug Burrow telling reporters yesterday
(32:14):
that his goal right now is to get his offensive
line healthy before putting folds on the playing field. So
right now, Nick Foles won't play against the Jacksonville Jaguars
or against the Philadelphia Yeah, take some getting used to.
Definitely an upgraded quarterback for jackson Mill right, Yes, yes,
for sure. How much of an upgrade. Yeah, I mean,
(32:34):
you know, there's questions about Leonard Fournette's health, rightly so,
and the defense can turn things around. Remember they had
that game against the Patriots last year in Week two
where they dominated New England and you're like, all right,
this is the Jags team and then everything just completely
fell apart. Yeah, real news are fake news. When told
(32:55):
of owner John Morris comments that he hopes the rookie
never sees the field, Giants quarterback d Nil Jones says
that he wasn't really surprised at the comments. Is that
real news, real news, they're real and they're spectacular. Yeah.
When I asked if he was surprised, he responded, not
really and then said, you know, he'll do what he
can do to help the team, but not really surprised
(33:15):
that the owner would like to see the rookie sit
throughout the season. No, but that that's been the plant.
That's what they've pitched him as the plan and anything,
you know, set the set the the expectations as low
as possible and then potentially you over you know, you
over come um what was it called under under selling,
over deliver. That's what they're trying with Daniel Jones under
(33:35):
sell over deliver real news are fake news? That one
Las Vegas sports book has the Redskins Jake Gruden is
having the best odds to be the first coach fired
or to leave his post in the NFL this season.
That's they're real and they're spectacular. Or to one are
the odds, according to bet Online, followed by Pat Shermer
of the Giants at seven to one. Would you spoke
(33:57):
about the Jaguars? Doug Moron listed at nine to one
would the third best odds? Nine to one? Lord best doggs? Um? Yeah,
I mean Moron obviously's got a little bit of I
mean like like, let's look around, and the bad teams
replaced their coaches last year, you know, and so if
you think of like who are the who are the
(34:17):
most likely to be bad teams? And you know, the
Redskins has spent so much on quarterback. The one thing
I will tell you is Bruce Allen runs that runs
that ship. And remember he's really close with John Gruden.
I mean that those are they are essentially family. I
think he has a longer leashed than people would assume.
But that's a weird place where owner makes decision. GM
(34:39):
makes decision, and those don't always line up with what
other people in the building want that decision of it. Yeah,
just looking at some of the odds to like Bill
O'Brien is twelve to one where it's, well, who's gonna
fire Bill O'Briant if if he weren't, you know, if
they got off to a bad start, they just remove
his assistant GM duty. Well, like, you know, you can
kick you upstairs. I you are real news, your fake news.
(35:01):
According to the odds from Betterline, Patriots head coach Bill
Belichick has the longest odds of being the first coach
to leave his post of the season. Is that real
news are fake news? Bill Belichick? Yes, I'm gonna say
that's fake news, they're real question. Yeah, that's all right.
Belichick listed at two fifty to one. Andy Reid, Sean McVeigh,
(35:23):
and Doug Peterson would be next at a hundred to one,
But to fifty to one for Belichick to be the
first one to go. M Um, Sean Sean McVeigh is
wearing that list. He's at one hundred to one. I mean,
Seanivey is going exactly no place, right. There's some coaches
that are going nowhere. Um, you know, I mean even
(35:43):
look at Matt Naggy at the with the Bears, considering
what they did, Like no chance he gets fired, Like
zero chance. That is wasting money if you're betting, and
most people don't bet futures, but I would not bet
that future at all. He and Frank Reich at sixty
six to one. Naggie and uh Frank Reich, alright, real
news are fake news that Dolphin's wide receiver Kenny Stills
an owner Donald Stephen Ross, are now on the same
page after Stills was critical of Ross holding a fundraiser
(36:07):
for President Donald Trump. I don't know how you would
characterize same page, like they agreed to disagree. Is that
that we're going? Is that okay? That well that I
don't think that's the same Okay, So that's fake news,
you are, Yeah, it is. He did tell the uh
it was the Palm Beach Post. I believe that they
agreed to disagree on the matter. We agreed to disagree, Okay. Good.
(36:31):
I just the idea that you're gonna speak out against
your own owner and calm a hypocrite publicly is not
a great without running it by the owner and just
voicing your Now. Look the way where Steven Ross is
a good dude. The way it works is he allows
his guys to speak their mind. And it's not like
he's gonna he's gonna cut Kenny Stills. But I don't
(36:51):
know how it works out with Kenny Stills next contract negotiation.
In terms of this thing. By the way, I almost
said Donald Ross, not because of Donald Trump, but because
the US amateurs at Pinehurst and you're gonna see it
on Fox Sports one. Of course, Donald Ross the designer
of Look what you did there? What a catch? Final one?
Professional Real news are fake news. A Little League World
(37:14):
Series team is facing accusation of stealing signs during the
tournament that sent them to Williams Sports. That real and
they're spectacular. The coach of the New Hampshire Little League
team says that the Rhode Island team used runners on
second base to steal signs and then send send them
to the dugout. New Hampshire manager Pat Dutton told the
(37:36):
New Hampshire Union Leader that Rhode Islands actions were quotes
on sportsmanlike, dishonorable and it's disgusting end quotes. Wow dishonorable
and disgusting. Don't you have signs so that the other
team doesn't know what you're gonna do? Like change up
your signs if you think that's also I mean, how
(37:56):
many pitches in the Little league do you have? Right? Well,
but I mean lookball, right, But if you know what's coming,
it's a completely different game. It was one's one game
time on the Doug got Leap Show. I think he's
giving us the middle finger. Yes, he is giving us
the middle finger. Like, look, do I think you're supposed
(38:18):
to steal signs? I don't, but I would also tell
you that, in addition to not stealing signs, you should
change your signs. If you think somebody's stealing your signs,
that's why you have signs. That's why you don't hold
a sign says har Gobs, A carball baker. Mayfield thinks
the media is rooting for the Browns to lose. I'll
tell you if that's real news or fake news. Next,

(39:01):
from how to cover almost anything. When it's game time,
have an experienced player help you stay of the game,
put their experience into play at Farmers dot com. This
is what Baker Mayfield told Complex Magazine. You've got to
believe in it and take it one week at a time,
(39:23):
because I wouldn't say that everybody wants to beat us.
I think in the media and everything that comes with
the hype around our team right now, people want to
see us lose just because the hype is so real.
So but we've got to go out there take it
one week at a time. I'm gonna try and win
(39:43):
every week. The Browns are on the road to fulfilling
expectations this season. Everyone knows the risks of drunk driving.
People could get hurt or killed, You get arrested, her
huge legal expenses, or even lose your job. If you
think drunk driving is no big deal, couldn't be more wrong.
Drives ober get or get pulled over, paid for by Nitza. Alright,
(40:06):
so here's the here's the number I'm gonna give you. Okay,
we're actually gonna take some calls on this. We don't
normally take a ton of calls. Eight seven seven six
three six nine eight seven seven six three six nine
eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox Doug Gotlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Do you want to see the Browns lose? Right?
(40:28):
Because the way my brain usually operates is I think
most people. That doesn't mean that there aren't some, but
most people want to see the Patriots lose unless they're
Patriots fans, right, because the Patriots always win. I think
outside of that, you probably hope the Cowboys lose because
there's always huge Cowboys hype. Um, there are some people
(40:53):
that don't love Russell Wilson, you know, and some of
the some the craziness that's gone on in front of
the Twelfth Man. I would say Steelers a little bit,
that there will be some people who don't want to
see the Steelers win because the Steelers, especially now they
got rid of their two most talented offensive players, are
two of their three most talented offensive players, and you
(41:17):
know some people are players guys. Hey that the teams,
the quarterback have too much power. Outside of that, I
don't I don't know if the haters be Hayden now
here's the genius to Baker Mayfield. He didn't say the
media wants to see us lose. He essentially said the
media wants to see us lose by couching it with
(41:40):
the media and all the hype. And of course, any
time you attack the media, you can't go wrong, even
from guys in the media who will say, these guys
in the media, you mean you. I'm in the media,
right I'm not a reporter, but and I don't write
(42:01):
columns per se, but I'm in the media because this
is media. I cover teams, I go and I cover games,
and I'm also a commentator and an opinionist. But I
will tell you that it doesn't mean what he's saying
isn't true, even if he's inflating it a little bit.
I don't think a lot of people have let lost
(42:22):
sleep over the Cleveland Browns for years and whether that
they win or they lose. I do think there's a
lot of hype, but I also think they've welcomed that hype.
And this is kind of classic Baker Mayfield, Let's create
an enemy out of the media. They're the ones responsible
for the hype. They're the ones for people coming at us.
They're creating this narrative that we people want to see
(42:45):
us lose or they're they're they're putting us on display
in a form and fashion that makes us, makes us
somebody who you want to see lose like I don't
think so, But that is a that is a common
trick from people in the spotlight to blame the media
(43:05):
on the things they've done themselves. How many times have
you heard that in politics? How many times you heard
that in show business? How many times you heard that
in business itself? Especially politics? Right, something goes wrong, you
don't answer why it went wrong or who who did it?
You just say the media or you do the Donald Trump,
(43:27):
which is the fake news thing. I do think the
Browns have a hype train. I think they've This is
what Baker Mayfield. He may be mad about the haters
being Haydn, but I think it's pretty obvious that Baker
Mayfield is like, man, what is that smell? Like? What like?
(43:49):
What is that smell? It's like, did somebody's cooking broccoli
in the oven? Well, take it out and narrow it out,
like who put the broccoli in the oven. I might have,
but I wasn't the one who turned the fire up
that high. It right, Baker Mayfield started the fire, started
the fire. John Dorsey has continued to pour a little
(44:11):
kerosene on the fire. Oh, Baker Mayfield's acts not enough,
Let's go get oh b j Oh, that's not enough.
Let's hire Freddy Kitchens and then let's have Freddy Kitchens
threatened to fire anybody who leaks information without putting their
name on it, because you know, putting your name on
something critical will definitely end well. In the National Football League,
(44:35):
I do think that people want to see the Browns lose,
but I think they want to see the Browns lose
because of the way the Browns have purported themselves and
on some level, how much we talk about the Browns,
but not to level of Notre Dame Football, not to
the level of the New England Patriots, not to the
level of the Dallas Cowboys. Jordan and Kentucky. You're on
(44:57):
the Doug Outlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Do you
want to see the Browns win or lose? Of course?
And I want to see the Browns lose. There's too
many claws of brown fans coming out right now saying
the Brown's the biggest thing out there. I'm at the
mall right now. I've never seen so many Browns jerseys
in my life. And everybody's rooting around Baker and oh
BJ and Kareem, you know, big name guys. But I
(45:22):
haven't done anything yet. Look I'm I'm with you. But again,
this is actually plays in what Baker is saying. David
in Bend, Oregon. So Jordan's in Kentucky, Okay, which Kentucky
border Cincinnati Bengals area Brown's area as well as well
as an SEC area. David, do you want do you
want to see the Brown's winner lose? So full disclosure.
(45:42):
First off, you know I'm an Archie grad, so Baker
did get arrested in my college town, so you know
there is that. But I would like to see them
losing the immediate time, just to see how they handle
all the diversity with those personalities in there. I would
really like to see, you know, weather Baker is a leader,
because if you can handle O, b J, Kareem, Myles
(46:05):
Garrett and all the other personalities on that team. When
they're losing this year, then I think that's a great
thing for their long term future, because I would like
to see them succeed in the long term. I actually
this is and if you listen, thanks so much, David.
If you listen to other media members, and I am
(46:26):
one of them, many of them that host radio shows,
they they're come out like what is he talking about?
Nobody wants to see him lose? Like, no, I don't
really actually see that. I actually think people do want
to see them lose. Maybe maybe not to love a
Notre Dame and to New England Patriots and the Duke
basketball or the Dallas Cowboys Adam in Austin, Texas rooting
(46:47):
for them to win or to lose. I want to
see the Browns win this year. I'm a Buffalo bill fan,
and I'm gonna be rooting for the Browns probably even
when they play Buffalo. I'd really love to see Mayfield
and mahomeans um in. Like if the titled you kind
of got the face of the heel against each other.
So I want the brown to be successful. I wanted
to compete all year on. All right, let's get to
Shawn and Sacramento Sean. Do you want to see the
(47:09):
Browns winner lose? Oh? Man, I couldn't want to see
I want to see them go over again this year. Man,
it's just a team full of d bags. And I
mean I get the hype around them because they have
improved on the offensive line, but I can't name one
guy they have they've approved, they've improved on offense, but
I can't name one guy on that old line. And
last time I checked, at the beginning of being successful,
no question. How about this the Cleveland Browns. I don't
(47:30):
know how many of you seen this the Cleveland Browns
since coming back to the National Football Legge. Remember, because
the Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens, they
have one double digit win season in their new history.
Think about that for a second, one double digit win season.
Not only that, they only have one nine win season,
(47:53):
no eight win seasons. So they have been in existence
since two thousand. That's a teen seasons. They have exactly
two winning seasons in the history of their franchise in
twenty years now. Doesn't help the fact that they've been
(48:13):
in the same division with the Steelers and with the Ravens,
and by the way the Bengals. They're kind of copying
a little bit of what the Bengals have done, which
is find a way to get guys who you wouldn't
normally get in Cincinnati or Cleveland. But because they have
some form of baggage, although they have, you know, top
picks as well defensive side, offensive side, having to number
(48:35):
one overall picks. But Jarvis Landry they got because the
Dolphins are ready to move on. And Obedell Beckham Jr.
They got because the Giants are ready to move on
people that other that, though talented, somebody else didn't want,
which is a little bit of how since that I
used to draft more like that as well. So I
(48:59):
don't think that big her may fields wrong. I think
there's a substantial number of people who do want to
see them lose. And it is because not necessarily because
the hype train. Maybe it's because the hype train, but
they've welcomed the hype train. They're like on the front
engine of the hype train and they're like, man, why
do you guys hate the hype train so much? We
(49:19):
wouldn't help, We wouldn't dislike it if it was more
organic instead. A lot of these things seem forced. Marking Washington,
You're on the Dug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Do you care if the if the Browns winner lose,
I do not care if they winner. Do you want
to see I do not. I would like to see
(49:42):
their defense win, but I would not like to see
the Dolphins. Why are their defense? To me is very special.
They're very young, very talented. They got pieces on all
three levels. They got their corner, they got their safety,
they got the defensive line. I think the only thing
they miss them as winebacker. But other than that, I
think their defense the ben Yeah. The offense is gonna
(50:03):
be their flaw. Yeah. I don't think they'll be able
to piece it together. When they hit a losing street,
they'll start pointing fingers, blame who's who this, that, and
it won't go from there. Yeah. I think here's maybe
the summation of it. I think Baker Mayfield has nailed
the um what does it call when you get the diagnosis? Right,
(50:28):
he's nailed the diagnosis. Maybe he understands the symptom, but
he doesn't understand the causation or what's caused it. Right,
He's right. People want to see them lose. There is
a lot of hype, but I think that people want
to see them lose. One because well, we've always been
(50:50):
able to make fun of the Browns. Two because of
the hype that they welcomed in in the way in
which they supported themselves. Three, they have gotten some guys
that are born out there welcome like oh Bell. They
asked some super talented guys that you almost want to
see lose, if for no other reason than that's kind
of the that's football explanation. Why can't they win? With
Odell Beckham Jr. It's football? So I think he nailed
(51:14):
the diagnosis of what America wants or thinks or feels
like they need. I don't know if he's nailed the
call like what is the cause of these symptoms? Coming
up next, four Bills offensive lineman Eric Wood joins the show.
What does he think about the Browns? They're getting too
(51:35):
much hype? Are there the offseason paper champs? Plus he's
now seen Josh Allen throughout the preseason. We'll get his
sense of what he's gonna look like in year two.
That's up coming next to The Doug Gotlip Show. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Doug Dot Leap
Show week days at noon Eastern three pm Pacific Doug
(51:56):
ot Leap Show, Fox Sports Radio. Eric Wood was a
Pro Bowl offensive line for the Bills. You can fall
on Twitter or Instagram at Ewood seventy. Check out his podcast,
What's Next with Eric Wood. He's also the color analyst
for the Buffalo Bills Radio Network, and you'll see him
this fall on the A c C Network. He suddenly
is super super busy after a year of counting his
(52:17):
millions and attending to his children. He joins, us, now
you throughout the first pitch at the Reds game. Yet
that is a Saturday night. Um, what's with your knee?
There's no high knee left there. You gotta get that
left knee up there. Bro. I know I'm still working
on if I want to go full wind up. I
want to get that knee up there how I want
(52:38):
to do it, But I gotta be able to deliver
a pretty good pitch. It's Johnny Bench bobble head night,
and no one gets uh. No one gets the fans
out in Cincinnati like a good bauble head night. So uh.
And the St. Louis Cardinals on Town and the Reds
are actually pretty decent in mid August, which is uh
something they haven't been used to lately. Yeah yeah, well,
and and Joey Vado getting thrown out, uh for for
(53:01):
um for arguing with umpires. Okay, so here's my advice
and throwing out first pitches because have you ever done
it before? Ever? I have not, and I'm all ears okay, So, um,
the the issue is the mound, right, the issue is
the mound. So what happens is, um, you get up
there and you don't really get to warm up on
(53:22):
the mound. You're sitting over there and maybe you'll play
catch with a buddy or maybe play catch with one
of your kids or one of the players, and it's
just weird because you probably don't bring out a glove,
you know whatever. So you have to understand you're gonna
throw it from a mound. So like, if you really
want to throw it, you should throw it from a mound.
A couple of times you just throw ten pitches from
a mound and feel kind of comfortable standing up there
(53:43):
and they just kind of rocking fire, right, Like, you
don't get cheated. This is just like this is just
like a guy coming across the middle. Don't get well
your alignment, So maybe you don't. You know, this is
your this is your running downhill. And you get a
defensive back and you could and you could crush his
spirit or you could just shove him out of the way.
I mean, you might as well go for it, right,
(54:04):
what's the worst thing that can happen? You could become
a meme, but you'll never be as bad as j
as uh As fifty cent no and ther the Merra
Cincinnati did one of the worst of all time too.
So um, but hey, maybe it's be good for my
broadcast career if I did go up there and do
something stupid. So maybe I'll have a few beers before.
I like a few beers. I like a few beers
(54:25):
knock off some of the tension. That's that's that's a
smart move. Eric would Jonnius would he joined us in
the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um,
Cleveland Browns as a guy that played on one of
these franchises that we're seen as consistent losers. When you
hear the hype and then you hear Baker Mayfield say, hey,
people want to see us lose. How what are you
(54:47):
rooting for the Browns to lose. I mean selfishly, I
want them to lose because they could be sitting there
competing for a wild card spot with my Bills and
with me doing color for the Bills this year. The
better than they can do, the more interesting our coverage
is gonna be. So uh yeah, I don't want them
to kill it. Um if they're playing an FC East
opponents or something that matters, I'll root for them. I've
(55:09):
always been a strategic router. I don't necessarily have favorite
teams anymore other than the Bills. I grew up a
Bengals fan, and uh your allegiance goes by the wayside
quickly when you play nine years for one uh franchise.
But uh man, they have a ton of talent over there,
even more talent. You know, when I was in the league,
the one time a team like this assembled a bunch
(55:30):
of talent was probably the Eagles, that dream team, and
they stunk. I think they're gonna be better than that team. Um.
I had Joe Joe Thomas on my podcast recently. He said,
eleven and five, it worries me with the first year
head coach. Now I know he was in Cleveland, but
first year head coach all these new pieces, um, it
worries me. Now they did. They have drafted well too,
(55:51):
so they do have some homegrown talent there as well.
You know, I would say probably the nine and seven,
ten and five would be realistic if I was Bett
and I'd say I'd probably say under ten wins? What
what do you what's your thought on Doug? Well, look,
I think they have talent. My my bigger questions. I
actually believe that people are rooting for them to lose.
I just not to level that people want to see
(56:11):
the Patriots lose or like Notre Dame football or do basketball.
But I do think they've done a lot of Hey,
come look at us, Hey we're really good. We got
a lot of swag, you know, And I think that
draws peeple, that that will draw people to want to
see you do poorly and like, look, that's the nature
of sport. And I don't blame Baker for using it
to motivate himself, but he's in complete denial. You think
(56:32):
this is a media creation. This is a Baker Mayfield
Cleveland Browns creation. And it also speaks to the success
that they had last year, right, and that's a that's
American in general. Anybody that's out there and forefront, the
haters are gonna come out. And when you have Odell
Beckham Jr. Maybe the biggest star in the NFL. Now
do you have Baker Mayfield number one pick last year
(56:54):
and not afraid to run his mouth either. When you
get personalities like this on the same team, yes, you're
easy too against. But how about how relevant the Cleveland
Browns all of a sudden become in two years. You know,
they go from no primetime games. Nobody wants to watch
him play too. You know, they'll have extremely high ratings
throughout this season. That's the voice of Eric Wood. He's
(57:14):
also the Brown's color man um. I mean the Brown's
the Bills color man. Bill's first first preseason game. How
they look? You know, they look pretty good. You get
limited time with the starters, They rested some guys, but
I thought they looked good. Josh Allen looked pretty efficient.
What I really like to see was he took some
free access throws to the outside, which will you know
(57:36):
that will naturally get that completion percentage up. And that
was his big knock last year he was at cent
that's what he was in college. He is what he
is who he thought he was. Well. Josh also had
one of the longest yards per attempt in the NFL.
So if he takes some of those easy free access
throws to the outside, which I saw him do John
Brown the speech, or they bring him as a free agent,
(57:58):
deps have to play off on him. Throw it out
to him on a couple of hitches the game. Take
a few swing passes that are there, a couple of
checkdowns instead of taking off and running, throwing it out
of bounds or taking a shot down the field. Now
you're up in the mid sixties, and uh, you know
people don't have the same narrative on Josh Allen Um.
All right, give me. I asked you last week. I'm
(58:19):
gonna ask you again. Give me a team that we're
not talking about. We spend so much of our time
we were at Cowboys camp. We talked to Chargers year
more than more than maybe anybody else does. We've talked Browns,
We've talked Bills. Give me a team we should be
talking about. You're not long out of this league. You
know this league who's better than we think? Well, shoot
(58:40):
the Bills had the Colts last weekend as I looked
at their roster, they're they're accumulating some talent there. Um,
you know, they gained some confidence last year. Frank Reich
seems to be doing an awesome job up there. The
Colts should be primed. Um, you know you're two under
Mike Pennon and uh Green Bay. You know, defensive and
Aaron Mike pett and I had him with the Bill's
(59:01):
excellent defensive coordinator. Um, you still have Aaron Rodgers at
the States. I'll do this year. They could have a
bounce back here. But that's a good thing about the
NFL right now. You could really talk about anybody, you know.
I love. I love all the coverage of Rosen and Fitzpatrick.
Fitz Patrick is one of my best friends. I've loved
uh kind of following that whole saga down there. Selfishly,
(59:21):
I want him to break the record and start for
the Dolphins this year and and throw the most throw
a pass for the most teams in the NFL and
history as the starting quarterbacks. So I'd love to see
that happen as well. Yeah, I I I would too,
But I do think that they need to let Josh
Rosen play it out right, like, like, let's let you
trade it for Josh Rosen. You're probably in the market
(59:44):
for a quarterback next year. If he's not good enough,
you don't have to pay a ton of money to Rosen.
But he does have he does have the pedigree of
being a potential, uh maybe not star, but solid starting quarterback.
I think you go with Rosen first, you can always
replace him with It's or do you go fits first? Uh,
thinking you could always replace him with Rosen because fitz
(01:00:04):
has been benched before. I mean, if I'm sitting to
from the outside looking in, I'm looking at Miami as
a non playoff team, I think you gotta you gotta
really take a look at what do we have here? Um,
And I think you need to take an honest look
at Rosen. So yes, I'm on the exact same page
as you, UM in that sense. Now, first year head
(01:00:27):
coach in Miami, he probably has a couple of years.
But you never want to lay a stinker ever, and
that could possibly happen if you play Rosen. You don't
think he's ready, you don't think he's good enough. If
you think Fitzpatrick gives you the best chance to win.
All these head coaches UM are generally so competitive that
they're gonna want to start whoever gives them the best
chance of winning, and sometimes that's when the GM needs
(01:00:48):
to step in. The Bill has got an next in preseason.
The Bills are at Charlotte UH at Carolina, so they
play the Panthers. I'll head down there tomorrow. They've been
doing a joint practice down there this week and really
good work for them. They get to go against a
three four defense, which all training camp they've been practicing
against the four three, so they get that work in.
(01:01:09):
Tons of stars down to Carolina. You know Cam Newton
and Christian McCaffrey, d J. Moore, Curtis Samuel. You have
all these guys for the Bill's defense to work against.
And the reports I've been hearing, which a lot of
meeting members like to pick on Josh Allen UM. A
lot of reports I'm getting are that he had two
really good days down in Carolina. Yeah, I'm I'm interested
in Christian McCaffrey and his continued evolution and improvement. He's
(01:01:33):
improved his body. Guy's a freak athlete. You can line
them up anywhere, and he's super explosive. I guess the
question is, can Cam Newton keep people honest so we
can see, so we can see Christian McCaffrey. Last thing.
We were up at the Cowboys yesterday and now they
have their whole offensive line back right like last year.
You know, they had all kinds of issues, but they
(01:01:55):
don't have a ZEKEI Elliott. How hard is it to
get ready for the season if you don't have all
of your if you don't have your running back, but
you have your entire offensive line. I think you'd rather
have your whole offensive line there and just plug and
play your running back as opposed to having your running
back and having happier offensive line and then trying to
build conduity. You know, they play, They've all played with Zeke.
(01:02:16):
They know what he can do. Now. Is he gonna
come in and shape I'm not sure. He's had maturity
issues over his career. Is he training the way he
should be? Is he gonna have to play himself into
shape these first few weeks like you generally play yourself
into shape through the preseason. I'm not sure, but I
do know that there's times that offensive line for the
Cowboys is so good and they do such a good
(01:02:37):
job at scheming on offense that I could run through
some of those holes. And I'm about his wife is
Ezekiel Elliott uh in that case anyways? But um, you know,
I I don't think it's a huge issue as long
as they get him in the building at some point
before the start of the regular season and hopefully someone's
checking on him to make sure he's in shape. Yeah, no,
no question about it. Um. Actually I have one more.
(01:02:59):
Do you ever match up against Jadeveon Clowney. Yeah? We
played against Houston UM a couple of times in my
career when they had Jadeveon Clowney early in his career.
The the m O on him was that he was
a little lazy and you had to really be careful
if he was gonna try. And then when he did,
he was really gonna turn it on. I knew when
the contract of the money came up he could really
(01:03:21):
put on a show because he is an absolute unique talent. Um.
But um, and when you got two guys in the
field like j. J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney and you
put them on the opposite sides of the line of scrimmage,
It's really hard to determine which way you're gonna stay,
you're running back, which way you're gonna slide your center
to provide the appropriate help because you have two incredible
(01:03:41):
rushers there, and then Houston's got a pretty good defense,
Um besides those guys as well. Yeah, great stuff, man,
awesome insight. Enjoy Carolina, Let us know how both teams look,
and we appreciate you. Join us. We'll do appreciate you.

You're on Fox Sports Radio. Cardinals g M. Steve Com
had this to say to the ringer, you have to
make tough decisions and avoid the outside noise, like why
did you give up on this guy? Why would you
trade this guy? It's on president. I took Josh Rosen
in the top ten. I just felt like Kyler Murray
was a generational talent I couldn't pass up. You know, Look,
(01:04:28):
I think there's some truth to that. I also think
that the reality to it is he knew they knew
that Rosen. The flaws to Rosen with the same flaws
that everyone's pointed out previously, which are like, look, he
looks the part when he's back there throwing, but he
just hard to get him in front of a room
(01:04:48):
full of alpha's and lead that team. I'll say this
about the Cardinals. I generally don't think, uh, the smallest
number one overall pick ever is going to work at
a position that's usually reserved for you know, six two
to six ft five talent. But if it's going to work,
(01:05:14):
this is the system it works in where he's grown
up in it, his coach played in it, his coach
coached in it. His coach needs it to work. The
general manager needs to work. And if you look at there,
you look at their their team. They are built from
the outside in a right. They have quality running back
(01:05:34):
in David Johnson, they have Christian Kirk, they have they're
they got a good tight end. You're obviously you have
Lara Fitzgerald, like, they have some pieces there and they
play indoors. I think that's it. When you have small hands,
you play West Coast, you play indoors. I think all
of that is important. I don't know if it works.
(01:05:58):
But you have you know, Christian Kirk, Charles Clay, you
got Ricky Seals Jones, a big target, you got fits.
Maybe you have Kevin White if he gets healthy, like
you got a bunch of wide receivers. David Johnson is
gonna have a massive year because you know so much
of what they do is dumping it off to him.
(01:06:19):
He won't have a big year in terms of the
handing off to him and the way this offense designed
with the wide splits. It basically gives you one extra
tick knowing that you're in man to man and your
guy is gonna get beat. But it doesn't matter because
you get rid of it quickly. And that would be
hard if it was a traditional quarterback who's used to
dropping back and going through his progressions. That's not what
(01:06:41):
Kyler Murray does. It's not what he's ever done or
been asked to do. And he'll fit it well. I
don't know how good Kyler Murray will be. I generally
don't think he'll be great. I think he's tiny. I
think he runs a little bit too much. But if
he's going to make it and potentially be a star,
this is the freak set up is Antonio Brown already
(01:07:04):
on the decline. We'll discuss that next. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Doug Dot Leap Show week
days at noon Eastern three pm Pacific every day. This
time the Doug Got Leaves Show Here on Fox Sports Radio,
we like to play for your portion of a previous

a channel FSRS Fox Sport Trade, we call it and
(01:07:25):
Now Fox. This is Jason McIntyre, who was co hosting
Undisputed earlier today, talking about Antonio Brown already wearing out
his welcome with the Raiders. What has Antonio Brown been
from the moment he walked into Oakland? A distraction? Frost
bitten feet Helmets on Hard Knocks last night said openly,
(01:07:51):
I'm concerned now, but he's concerned that he's not at
practice and the frost bit but he's hurt. That's is
a distraction when your star attraction. You wouldn't pay Khalil
Mack last year, and you're willing to go pay Antonio Brown,
who binds you is a declining receiver. Now, Rob gave
some great numbers, Okay, he led the NFL and touchdowns
(01:08:13):
last year. Last year was arguably Antonio Brown's worst year
in five years receiving. Okay, Ben Roethlisberger fifteen touchdowns, Ben Roethlisberger,
Wait here we go, we got more Ben Roethlisberger through
six seventy passes, the most in the NFL. Antonio Brown
had his fewest receptions since two thousand and twelve last year. Okay, look,
(01:08:37):
I if the if the question is is Antonio Brown
a distraction? The answer is, if he's not a distraction,
what exactly what? What? What would you characterize as a distraction? Right, Like,
Antonio Brown is in fact a distraction, no questions, zero
(01:08:58):
questions asked. On the other hand, is he declining? I
would say the answer is no. Remember he didn't play
in the final game of the season. Um. And the
problem with Antonio Brown is he's super talented, but he's
a hand the ass. That's it. That's generally the problem
(01:09:19):
in an in a nutshell, you know, in a nutshell
therein lies the problem. And you know, if you can
deal with that, then if you can understand that, if
you can accept that. But the other issue is this
(01:09:39):
with with Antonio Brown is like, look, man, you're in
a new place of work. Okay, when you've been the
same place for the rest of your career and you're
kind of out of it at a meeting, or you
don't show up because your feet hurt, or you go
on some nonsensical rant about your helmet. People give it
a pass like s S they b. But when people
(01:10:01):
don't know you, they're like, what is the matter with
this dude? What is the deal? I'll give you an
example here, Okay, so um, I go to CBS from
ESPN and I go to do college basketball games and
(01:10:22):
the night before games, the night before games, I would
go out to dinner or go to the house of
one of the coaches because that's when left their guard down.
I know, I know most of them for twenty years.
They tell me everything and a lot of stuff I
can't even use, but I just know. And you find
out stuff about other teams for all the work you do,
(01:10:44):
plus you just catching up with old friends. So at
the end of the first year, I get ready for
the n c A tournament and my boss at the
time says, hey, you know what, would you please go
to dinner at this last game aim with the crew?
And I was like, oh, okay, why because that's what
(01:11:06):
we always do, and it it to some of them.
It feels like you don't want to spend time around them,
and like my thing is like, look, when you go
and do a game, you spend a ton of time
with the crew, but they're not the ones providing you
actually information, Like, Yeah, how we want to do it
is we want you to be a family, We want
you guys to do things together. We want everybody lockstaff
be able to answer. But I was like, all right,
(01:11:29):
But because I came in kind of doing my own thing,
I'm sure early on they're like, what is the neal galant?
He doesn't want to go to dinner with us? It's
a free dinner. Company picks it up, And that wasn't
my intent in any way. Now, I Antonio Brown his
intent maybe to not practice his aby. His intent maybe
to draw more attention to Hard Knocks, which Hard Knocks
continues to be highly rated. He may have a myriad
(01:11:51):
of intentions, but right now he's striking everybody as what
a what is the matter with this dude? But I'll
disagree with Jason McIntyre who says he's starting to do
I think he'll he'll start to fall off. But he
was a freak talent last year, just an absolute freak talent. Yes,
rhyme music isn't the issue with the Raiders that Antonio Brown.
(01:12:16):
They're already in such a tenuous situation. Whether it's whether
or not they're committed to Derek Carr, they're going to
be moving the franchise. It looked like they were heading
in a direction where they were collecting young talent, and
then they totally changed all that to get a player
like Antonio Brown. So they were heading one direction, completely
changed course with the opposite direction, and then not only
(01:12:38):
did they do that, but then they brought in a
combustible personality. So it's like if he was able to
wear out his welcome in a place like Pittsburgh where
they had an established two time Super Bowl champion quarterback
and established head coach has been there for a while
and has won a super Bowl, and a franchise that's
not known for very much turnover because they stand by
(01:12:59):
head coaches and they sort of keep things intact. Why
did the Raiders ever think that they would be the
team that could get Antonio Brown to fall into line
and be a part of a team and not be
such an individual personality I think they thought that one
he was. You know, you start to convince yourself of things. Man,
(01:13:20):
he's little misunderstood. He's kind of been there too long.
It was about how many times we have people say
it was about money. It wasn't about anything else. He
just wanted new contract, and he would have been fine.
He's a really hard worker. And you get enough people
telling you things that you want to hear, and you
go like, yeah, I think all of all of that stuff.
He plays really hard on Sundays and what you can
see on tape there, there's there's a reason he was
(01:13:42):
on the market, right, there's a reason. So um, But
I think you end up convincing yourself of these things
because you want confirmation bias, and you hear enough people
say it's about the contract, and you have to give
me a new contract. To give a new contract, and
he you know, remember he cleaned himself up, he put
(01:14:05):
on a tie, he shaved off that awful blonde mustache.
You know, like, look, he kind of sold out for
a minute in order to make you think that he
was a raider. And money doesn't make you, doesn't change,
it makes you more of who you are. That that's
what took place. That's it took place. This was Philip
Rivers Earlergy in the Dan Patrick Show talking about their
(01:14:26):
championship window. I think last year it was a little
more of a disappointing the finish, and I was living
a little more emotional post game after that Pagers game,
because of you're like, gosh, we we're right here on
the doorstep again, and not only you're not guaranteed to
be back here, it's a whole another year and not
many left. So I'll never forget the being ANFU champiship game.
(01:14:47):
There's a two thousand seven students. It was that two
thousand eight championship game and we were all thanked up
and hurt, but then we got beat in that playoff game,
and I remember North saying, hey, we're gonna be at
a bus of these games. We're gonna be a bunch
of championship game and we hadn't made one stand and uh,
they are fleeting. It's here. Here we are, We're in
We're in a little window where we're gonna be on
half ability to go get it done. It's just no
(01:15:09):
matter if we do. Yeah, no, listen, I don't think
there's any doubt that the Chargers they thought they had
a window earlier, and whether it was you know, Rivers,
a c l or the dysfunction in there front office
between a J. Smith and North Turner. I mean the
North turn between a J. Smith and who got fired
(01:15:31):
wasn't North Uh, Marty Schottenheimer. You know, they had the
crazy light of fourteen wins and loss of the Patriots
at home when they had a ball picked off and
could have just taken a knee instead you tried to
run it and fumbled. I mean, they had a bunch
of things go wrong, and then they move and they
don't have a home crowd and all this other stuff
(01:15:52):
going on. But um, yeah, I look at this and
I say, um, I'm with Philip Rivers. He knows as
a window. They're starting to get smart about resting him
some of the preseason. They learned a lot of lessons
losing last year to the New England Patriots, and they
showed championship moxie winning on the road in Kansas City,
(01:16:15):
in Pittsburgh and in Baltimore. What does the Fox says?

Up Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio Coming to you
from beautiful Los Angeles, California. It is sunny, it is
hot outside. It's still summer. Many of you are lucky
enough to have your kids in school. We're getting ready
for more preseason football, which gets us closer to college football,
which gets us closer to NFL football. Still know Ezekie Elliott,
(01:17:26):
Still no Melvin Gordon, Still no contracts uh between the
Cowboys and some of their stars. Still still know Jeneveon
Clowney in Houston, Levian Bell not playing in the We're
not gonna get a bunch of snaps in the preseason.
Not Eve gonna play, so how sharp will he look?
(01:17:46):
We got a lot of stuff to get to, but
let me start with the New York Football Giants. By
the way, I do feel like an old man when
I say New York Football Giants. It is of cliche
to say. Do you do know why we say New
York Football Giants? Right? Get to that in a moment.
The Doug Gollip Show is brought to you by Farmers.
(01:18:07):
At Farmers who've seen almost everything, so we know how
to cover almost anything. When it's game time, have an
experienced player help you stay at the game, put their
experience into play. At Farmers dot com, we are okay,
we say New York Football Giants because there used to
be the New York Giants. In baseball. It was a
long time ago, you know, like there was the San
(01:18:30):
Francisco Giants were the New York Giants, right. The Brooklyn
Dodgers became the l A Dodgers, The New York Giants
became the San Francisco Giants, and the New York Mets.
Do you know what The New York Mets were orange
and blue. If you combine the blue of the Brooklyn Dodgers,
the orange of the New York Giants. You have the two,
(01:18:51):
the orange and the blue. M Anyway, the New York
Football Giants have not been particularly good, right, Like we
we celebrated the results of the two Super Bowl wins.
But the fact is that in the last ten NFL
(01:19:14):
seasons they have exactly two double digit winning seasons, two
whereas in the previous ten they had four. It's not
just that they've been bad. They've fallen on supremely hard times.
The Giants since two thousand thirteen. Okay, so remember we're
talking two thousand thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, six seasons,
(01:19:39):
they've won seven, six, six, eleven, losing in the wild
card three and five. You can pitch it to me
however you want. That's not good. Even when they won
the Super Bowl, they only won nine regular season games
and they had to go on the road for all
three games. You're talking to nine wins seasons followed by
(01:20:05):
a seven win followed by two six wins. They had
the eleven wins season when they were beaten in the
first round in the playoffs, then three, then five, So
the Giants, of course part of ways with Odell Beckham Jr.
Highest paid at this position, Olivier Vernon win signed highest
paid his position, Landon Collins walked in free agency. Co
(01:20:28):
owner of the Giants John Mara said Tuesday, you don't
like to see all that talent go out the door,
but let's face it, we've had one winning season two
thousand sixteen here In the last five or six years,
we have not been so good since we won the
Super Bowl. We need some drastic change changes. I think
(01:20:50):
it's best, he said. In terms of Daniel Jones, I
think the best thing is about me, the best thing
for me About Davis. He makes decisions that he feels
are in the best interests of the franchise. He doesn't
give a damn what people think, being the media or
the fans or anybody. He has the courage and his convictions,
and you have to have that. He's set about to
(01:21:12):
try and rebuild this team, change the culture in the
locker room. There's not that much difference between what the
Steelers are doing and what the Giants are doing. They're
just starting from different places. The Steelers are perennial playoff
team that didn't make the playoffs, so they got rid
of two of their three most expensive and high priced,
(01:21:34):
high priced assets. Now Levian didn't want to play, but
he would have played if they would overpaid him. And
Antonio Brown kind of the same thing. But they want
to change their culture. They're not as good talent wise,
but better in terms of total overall. Buy in helps
you across the board, but you can't have the talent
slips so much where he got a bunch of choir
boys can't beat anybody. The Giants have want to combine
(01:21:57):
eight games of the past two years. That's arrible for
a perennial playoff powerhouse in the biggest market in the
country with a Hall of Fame quarterback. That's just not
good enough. And so they too have said a the
Vernon contracts a bad contract. Let's just move on, Landing Collins,
Let's just move on. And Odell Beckham Jr. A guy
(01:22:19):
who has as much talent as anybody who's ever played
the position. We just we can't get him to buy
in to the two our ideals of what a winning
player wants to be. It makes just too much money
to act the way he acts. I've brought it up
a bunch of times like that on side kick. That
was his last play really as a Giant their plan
(01:22:45):
against the playoff team, there's an on side kick, it's
coming right at him, and instead of going after the football,
which is his job, he made a quote business decision, which,
by the way, he was given the big guaranteed contract
before the season ever started just for that type of play. Hey,
(01:23:06):
don't worry you gotta give up your body to go
across the middle. We paid you. If you gotta give
up your body to feel nonside kick, we paid you.
So I sorry. I wouldn't want that guy on my
team either. And remember some of this is also a
(01:23:28):
reaction to what has happened with previous staffs. Jerry is
a very good gentlem manager. For a long time with
the New York Giants, he too tried to He tried
to rebuild that thing on the fly instead of rebooted.
That's why they're rebooting it completely. But they also remember
talked to Eli Manning about sitting him down the fourth quarter.
He balked and said, you want to stop, you want
(01:23:50):
to you want to take me out? Stop the streak.
They all voted to stop the streak and then they
all coward at the sight of kind of public embarra,
a smitten public backlash. Dave Getleman doesn't care. Dave Gentleman
has been uh empowered. Dave Gentleman is the opposite of
what they had previously. He's not scared to make big decisions.
(01:24:12):
He's not there to be out in not scared to
be out in front. And this is what we do.
We do it in marriage or relationships, where the next
person you date is the opposite of the ones used
to date. We date it with coaches, from the defensive
mind to the offensive mind, from the heavy handed guy
to the players coach. We do that, and we do
with front office guys, from the guy who loves group
(01:24:33):
think to the guy who's like, you know what, I
made this decision. This is the decision, and here's why
it's gonna work. So I think the Giants are this
is their process. It is a long term process. We
have a running back. We started to rebuild our offensive line,
did that last year. Now we think we have our
(01:24:56):
quarterback of the future. Obviously, we got to continue to
get more wide received. Evers, we gotta get more town
on the offensive line and on the defensive side of
the football. But let's let's let's a cruise some talent
in the draft where there under rookie control, and slowly
but surely add to it. Not dumb at all, considering
it's really been uh five bad years with one very
(01:25:18):
fortunate year. Uh, real quick, did you guys see this story? Um,
we'll get to a little later on this hour. There's
a female coach of the San Francisco Forts, and she's
come out and said that one front office executive said
(01:25:40):
that the NFL is not ready for a female female coach.
We'll talk about that upcoming, but coming up next, Hard
Knocks director Tim Rump joins the show. How much of
the Antonio Brown story are we missing? How much ended
up on the cutting room floor. I'm intrigued. I hope
you will be, he joins us. Next, be sure to
(01:26:01):
catch live editions of The Doug Dot Leap Show week
days in noon eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio and the I Heart Radio app Stuck Got Leap Show.
You're on Fox Sports Radio and uh, let's welcome to
Tim run who's the producer for NFL Films and director
of Hard Knocks. May have seen episode two of season
(01:26:22):
fourteen of Hard Knocks, which debuted last night Tuesday night
HBO ten o'clock Eastern Time. You can also watch it
obviously on demand. Um tim this year, obviously you're featuring
the Oakland Raiders. Jon Gruden had another profanity laced speech
last night. Um, look, it's it's really hard for us,
(01:26:43):
I think to tell, like, what's real Gruden and what's
I know him on HBO Gruden as the as the director.
What do you think what's the percentage of what's real
and what's I know I'm being filmed? I mean, I
think it's a real I mean, John's pretty comfortable with
who he is. He's kind of go away from the
television personality and for the last two years he's really
(01:27:03):
gung ho back into the football. Um so I think
what you're seeing on screen, that's just him. You know,
last night there was some on the Antonio Brown stuff,
but not it didn't feel like overwhelming. How much of
that is your call? Like that the team has has
final final say, right, like, what's what's the How does
it breakdown at the kind of the end of the
(01:27:24):
day with the finished product. Well, no, I think it's
just a developing story at this point. We're appreciative that A.
B Is willing to tell his story with us, and
I think obviously it's a storyline that will continue to
grow into the next episodes as well. Um, it's obviously
something that's not over as he's put out there that
he's continued to try to find his helmet and get
back on the fields of his seat. So I mean,
(01:27:46):
I'd expect more as as the story continues are developed.
Tim Rump joining us, how is this camp different from
previous years? Um, That's a great question. I think it's
really for us, it's probably the history of the team.
It's rare that we have a team like the Renders
that has such a rich history. And then also in
addition to that, the huge personalities that come with it, Um,
(01:28:08):
you know John Gruden being a head coach that's won
a Super Bowl. Uh, and also uh, you know a
team that has a lot of players like A B
and and Derek Carry's trying to come into his own Um.
And really the biggest difference probably for us just logistically,
as is the first time that they've gone away for
camps since the Jets went. I went in to Cortland
which I believe I was liking about two thousand nine.
(01:28:31):
So so that's a huge change for us that we've
got to kind of set up camp here when they
break camp, we've got to break camp and moved down
to Alameda with them. Um So, but it's great for
the show because it kind of gives you in two
different perspectives. Yeah, I think it's I thought the in
the first episode when you had the John Madden on
the blocking sled, I thought that was like year Madden
(01:28:52):
and Raiders and talking football and and I'm in whose
idea was that those are the people back in the
NFL films. Uh So, I think one of the first
full padded practice that we had, uh they noticed that
the team was using a seven man sled, which is
something that you don't always see in every single camp.
So right away that jumped out at them. They remember
just from the massive vault back then Fall films that
(01:29:14):
we have that great footage of John Madden talking about
the sled. So it was just a perfect marriage of
old film and modern day stuff. Jim rom joining us
in the Doug Gottlip Show, and then of course you
had the Autumn wind like it really did it was like, oh, man,
here we go, right a year, you're here Autumn Wind.
I'm guessing that's gone over pretty well. Yeah. Absolutely. I
(01:29:36):
mean that's the first time that we've actually put audio
into the iconic Hard Knocks them intro um, so we
weren't sure how it would go over. You know, people
may not have loved it, because you know, you never
know when you try something different. But I think it's
gone over great. It was a no brainer for us. Obviously,
you heard that voice and you heard that poem. It
(01:29:56):
brings up a lot of memories for not only Raiders fans,
but just football fans general, no question. Tim rom joining
us from NFL Films, director of Hard Knocks. Hard Knocks
Season fourteen. Uh. This year, of course, featuring the Raiders,
the ratings have been kind of through the through the
roof um. But it doesn't feel like I don't know,
maybe it's because Ali got cut in the first In
(01:30:18):
the first episode. Usually there's the guy that America wants
to cheer for that you locked onto, and this year
it still feels like a work in progress. Is that
Is that a fair depiction? Sure? I mean we thought
that Ali might be that guy, and then obviously he
went he was caught in show on which we weren't anticipating. UM,
but I think it's probably pretty regular about right now
(01:30:40):
to show them to not be sure who that main
character is. Could it be a q Endoss that was
introduced and showed too. We've got a bunch of other
guys that were following. UM. I think last year Devin
could Juice or Broken Roeback really weren't developed until show
two or even show three. UM, So I would definitely
expect some of those guys to start popping up in
the in the next show or two. UM. It's funny,
(01:31:02):
you know. The the Derek Carr stuff is is interesting. UM.
There's been a lot of discussion about the relationship between
the two, and maybe some of it is just Gruden
has been super positive. Maybe it's I don't know if
if you guys are trying to um depict it in
a more positive light, but it does feel like there's
(01:31:25):
a growing relationship between Gruden and Car and some form
of mutual respect and that everything coming out of Gruden's
mouth is positive in regards to Derek Carr, what what
percentage of it is the reality? What percentage of it
is Hey, let's let's kind of clean up this narrative
that they don't they don't necessarily get along. No, we're
(01:31:45):
definitely not trying to take a slant on it or
presented a certain way. We're just capturing the elements of
putting out there as is. UM. But I mean, I
think by all regards from what we've heard in meetings
and you know, as they talked to the press, they're
thrilled with their car so far in the camp. He's
having stug outlive show here on Fox Sports Radio. UM,
(01:32:06):
what do you want? What do you want? What it's
like the white whale of hard knocks? What what is
missing that we have yet to see? For me, I
think it's kind of what you hinted that earlier, was
just finding that long shot character that everyone falls in
love with, UM, And I think that's gonna come. There's
definitely some potential guys. It's just a matter of you know,
(01:32:28):
they have their second preseason game tomorrow. All of a sudden,
some guy that wasn't really on our radar catches three
touchdowns tomorrow, and you know, we've got the story. So
I think just waiting for that big moment to happen
and I think we're close. Um so, I would expect
to see that and show three or four. Did you
think Jonathan Abram came across well in episode one? I
(01:32:48):
was surprised that there was a mixed reaction because I
love Jonathan person I think he's a huge personality. He
doesn't really care what other people think about him. Um,
from what we've been told, that's how he was in college.
Um so, oh. I think it's great that we continue
to show his football side as well, because I think
he could be a hell of a player too. Yeah,
I mean I think so too, and he kind of
he does kind of fit that mold. I just don't
(01:33:09):
know if it it came across like a little bit
much like there's the guy who knew he was on
TV more than there's a guy. And it's not that
that's not his personality, but it does feel like it
was maybe maybe even more pronounced, and I think is
mostly his doing more than anything else. Like you know,
Gruden's talking to him, he's a rookie, and it's it's
like he's not really listening. And I don't know if
(01:33:31):
that would have been the case, that the camera's not
been there, sure, No. I mean that's something we actively
look out for. You know, people always ask, um, can
you tell when guys trying to perform for the camera
versus just being themselves. So when we think guys are
trying to perform, we kind of avoid them and don't
really develop them. But but I honestly just think that
that is Jonathan. He would have had that conversation regardless.
(01:33:51):
What's Antonio Brown like to cover? He's been great, He's
when he's here, he's been fantastic. I like that one.
When he's when he's here, is a is a loaded deal?
Is a loaded deal? For sure. It's really kind of amazing,
right that that here. You guys covered him, uh some
at home. You had the great audio with him and
(01:34:12):
his kids looking for Ben Roethlisberger and then calling him
Derek Carter and then all of a sudden he's he's gone. Uh,
I can't imagine that. Have you had that before? Where
a guy is there, then gone and then back. If
you had any sort of situation in the fourteen years,
have you had one like this before? The closest I
can think of, Um, we covered the Larry Johnson hold
(01:34:32):
out UM back in I can't remember what year that
was that we did to Kansas City. UM, Hard Knocks
probably would have been about ten years ago at this point,
So that's probably the closest that we've we've had to that.
Um And obviously Darrelle revis in uh New York with
the Jets was a big storyline there as well. Tim Rump,
the NFL film from NFL Films, the producer and a
director of Hard Knocks. Hard Knocks is in season fourteen.
(01:34:55):
They're featuring the Oakland or aid as if you didn't
see last night's episode, you catch it on the Man
of course next Tuesday night, eight o'clock Eastern time. Anything
to me ten o'clock Eastern time, UM, anything you can
tell us that's already in the can that we should
look forward to next week. I wish I knew. I
have honestly have no idea what the show is going
to look like. That's the crazy thing, Like even show
(01:35:16):
to the ending two shots we captured that morning of
the show. So UM, at this point, I don't think
the show is even really cut yet. Is there any
show like this in television right like that that in
terms of the turnaround time, trying to keep it in
real time. No, absolutely not. I mean most people refer
to it as a reality show, and I think we
(01:35:37):
like to think of as a documentary series. But when
you compare to other reality shows like you know, Survivor
or something like that, I mean, they have months to
edit and develop what storylines they want to cover. This
is really you're kind of going on the fly. And
like I was saying, if someone breaks out in tomorrow's
preseason game, they've got two games two days basically to
start editing a segment and figure out how to make
(01:35:59):
him a character. It um so it's it's really fascinating,
and I think that's the coolest part of the show.
I tend to agree with you, Tim Rump. Check out
Hard Knocks. That's on HBO ten o'clock Eastern every Tuesday,
and of course always available on demand. Tim great stop,
thanks so much for joining us. Great thank you for
having me get you to Dan buy or find out
what else is going on the world of sports. Dan
what he got tons of stuff, Doug, including in Major
(01:36:21):
League Baseball, where the Red Sox hand their way with
the Indians. C O two is drilled toward right field,
slicing towards the corner, Nake went on the run, still
going back and that ball is gonna go off the
wall and gone. It is over the wall as well.
Back to back for the Red Sox and they lead
to nothing. Two for Xander Bogart's On the day on
the Red Sox Radio Network, they topped the Indians by
(01:36:44):
a score of five to one. Yankees beat the Orioles again,
six to five was the final. Gary Sanchez the three
run home run Rangers top the Blue Jays seven to
three in Toronto. Games in progress, high scoring affair on
Chicago South Side Astros and White Sox noted up at
an a piece. They're tied up at five a piece
in the sixth inning in Denver between the Diamondbacks and Rockies,
(01:37:05):
while the Twins hold the five three in Milwaukee. That's
in the bottom of the eighth inning. Padres doubling up
the Rays right now four to two in the fifth,
while Oakland's jumped out to a four nothing lead on
the Giants at the sixth inning. One of the game
Reds and Nats tied up at one of the fourth
and that's getting some good news is Max Scherzer could
be returning as soon as this weekend. He threw a
simulated game yesterday, had another throwing session today as he's
(01:37:26):
been out with a back injury. Mets placed Jeff McNeil
on the ten day injured list with a hamstring strain.
Tiger Wood said that oblique strain last week that forced
to withdraw from the Northern Trust on the or in
the FedEx Cup playoffs on the PGA Tour. Well, he's
gonna tee it up tomorrow in the BMW Championship at mcdianah.
Says he feels way way better than he did a
week ago. Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles not likely to play
(01:37:46):
in the team's preseason game Thursday against the Eagles. Jaguars
head coach Doug Brons told reporters yesterday he wants to
get his offensive line healthy and have them on the
field before he'd put fulls in action. We'll be back
to the Doug Gottlieb Show ten seconds, But first a
word from farmers. At Farmers Insurance, we know there's a
crucial difference between a kick drum pedal and your car's
(01:38:07):
accelerator pedal because at Farmers we've seen and covered it.
We are farmers under written my Farmers truck Fire Insurance
Exchange and affiliates products unavailable in every state. Doug Gottli Show,
You're on Fox Sports Radio today not today? You would
want to do? You want to want to retire tomorrow?
Tomorrow is not like like I'm cashing out my you
(01:38:29):
know downs down eight points. Really yeah, I'm not gonna
Tomorrow's not the day I'm gonna retire. So that is
a that is a good thing. There is a very
very good thing. Um, I don't know. I thought that
was fascinating in terms of they're able to put it
(01:38:49):
together in real time. I was what was your take,
Ryan on the on Hard Knocks last night. I feel
like the expectations we had coming into it and everything
that we've seen play out with Antonio Brown since he's
become a member of the Raiders, we've expected it to
be a little bit more explosive, and it's been somewhat
(01:39:11):
underwhelming because of all those factors. Yep, I almost feel
as though Hard Knocks being what it is, you almost
are hoping for a team that's kind of boring and
then be surprised by what you end up seeing behind
the scenes when it and and that's what makes it entertaining.
I don't feel like we've gotten a lot and and
(01:39:32):
part of it is now there's ninety man rosters that
keep the whole time. There's not a lot of competition
now because of how contracts are. But I do kind
of feel like we don't have as many We don't
have the front office discussions that we've had well, and
that's that's what we talked about this a little bit
yesterday at Cowboys camp leading up to the episode, and
(01:39:52):
you saw a little bit of it. I mean there
was you know, Jon Gruden made a couple of comments
that they included where he was like, where is my
friend Antonio at has anyone seen him? Um? But really
a lot of what they featured regarding the team's comments,
whether it was Gruden or Mayok, they were just playing
back news clips or press conference clips that we had
(01:40:16):
already seen, given that, you know, they're playing back stuff
that had happened from the week prior, so it didn't
really shed a lot of new light on the situation,
which is what we were looking for, Like how is
the team reacting to the fact that he's gone? How
has the team been reacting to the fact that he
has these feet injuries and maybe you know, they mentioned
the helmet thing, but they didn't really if you're gonna
(01:40:37):
take Mike Silver's report as accurate and as intricate as
it was, I mean, we didn't see anything on there. Now, granted,
part of his report went back to O. T. A. S.
But we didn't really see anything on there about him
having issues with trying to sneak his helmet back onto
the field and someone having to you know, walk over
and tap him on the shoulder and say, hey, you're
(01:40:58):
not allowed to use that. So may be there wasn't
a lot of stuff to be included, but it just
seemed a little underwhelming that they didn't put as much
behind the scenes footage as we would have hoped to
have seen. Yeah, yeah, it feels like there's he didn't
say as much, right, but it does feel like there's
a little bit too much power in whether it's too
(01:41:21):
much power or or it has to be it has
to be that there has to be something like, hey,
we don't want to show some of this stuff because
there's too much out there about what's going on. It's
one of the reasons, you know, inside the NFL is
probably gonna get canceled. You guys know, Inside the NFL
is now and Showtime. Um, Inside the NFL was like
the first ever kind of insider and analysis breakdown show.
(01:41:44):
And uh, I think it's I think it's fascinating that, um,
that it's lasted this long because we have all these
other daily football shows. Right there's NFL Live, which is daily.
Yet NFL Network has in complete network set up for
daily stuff and breakdowns, analysis and all the talk. It
(01:42:05):
doesn't mean that it's not really good what they do
on Showtime, but like it's all day. It's they recorded
on like a on a Tuesday, it shows on a Wednesday.
A lot of things changed from Tuesday to Wednesday, and
we already have all this information. We're we're moving on
the next week. So um, you know, I know radio
shows like that that deal on dated information. Some radio
(01:42:27):
shows are um, are are written and what happens is
you write them the night before the morning of everything
everything changes. Everything changes. So you look at this and yes,
they try and record in real time. I think the
two things they're working against it is they're trying to
tell a weak story. And many of these stories we
(01:42:48):
already know, and so they don't have to just tell
us a story. They gotta give us the behind the
scene story while telling us the story, because not everybody
follows it as much as we follow it, right, And
then they got to keep up to in real time.
That's hard. And then they got to deal with the
fact that the teams do have veto power and there's
things they don't want you seeing. I will say that
(01:43:09):
is a good point that I think part of where
the disconnect is, and it may just be growing given
how the media landscape changes, is we're so tuned in
with this kind of stuff that we find it to
be repetitive and not very insightful. My fiance is actually
watching Hard Knocks with me and she finds it very entertaining.
(01:43:30):
M hm. So I think that I think there's entertaining parts.
I think they do a great job with it. Um.
I just think it's been more entertaining in the past.
That would that would be my take. But I wonder, like,
what was it about things in the past as opposed
to now. I mean, has just the media landscape changed
that much, or what did they do in the past
that changed, or were our expectations just too high coming
(01:43:53):
into it? With the fact that we were like oh
Gruden and Mayok to TV guys on a TV with
Antonio Brown. I think you thought it was gonna be
the best of both worlds. You have vivid TV personalities
and a series which is which has created vivid TV
personnely like Mike Zimmer and I don't know how many
(01:44:15):
people knew him before he became before he became a
head coach, but Mike Zimmer was in Cincinnati that you're
in Cincinnati. He was wildly entertaining. Like I love it.
I played for Mike Zimmer. I can I can go
back year by year and say, like this guy, I
really end up enjoying. You're just not a Jonathan Abram fan. No,
(01:44:35):
I think I think that's what the issue is so far.
Not a Jonathan Abram got you Jonathan Abram guy. Uh,
he's kind of annoying. I mean, I I don't I'm
not as much against them as you are. Um, but yeah,
a lot of Jonathan Abram, a lot of Cleveland ferrel Um.
I saw Josh Jacobs tweeted out earlier today he said,
(01:44:59):
people are wondering why I'm not being featured. It's because
I'm hiding from all the cameras, which I think is interesting.
I guess, I don't know, maybe he just doesn't have
a personality, or he just doesn't want to do it,
just doesn't want to do it's not into it. I
also think, you know, Derek Carr kind of falls into
that mold of what we all expect from a franchise quarterback.
(01:45:22):
He has yet to say anything that is interesting, funny,
thought provoking, just very politician like. Yeah, I would, I
would tend to agree. I would. I would tend to
agree that that he's he's super boring. But that's he's
(01:45:43):
kind of Kirk Cousins this, you know, religious boring dad
kind of. There was a little bit of trash talk
in the first episode, first episode, a little bit of
trash talk from him, um to what's in the Jonathan
Abrams guy right there at dinner, and you know, I
thought he handled it pretty well, but he gave it
(01:46:03):
back to him a little bit. But yes, he's generally
pretty boring. It's a weird. The whole thing is a
weird dynamic. I feel like I feel like those guys
who cover the team could come out afterwards and go
like this team stinks, you know, or this team is awesome. Now.
The other thing that the other kind of attack on
(01:46:24):
hard knocks is some teams do this themselves. They have
their own reality show or whatever. And so because you know,
the Cowboys have had one, Notre Dame Football had one.
There are other things that exist. This is just the
old like this is just Madden, right, this is kind
of the classic show that everybody locks in on. All right,
(01:46:48):
Coming up next, we'll get you to the press. Jimmy
g Um. Jimmy g had himself quite the day. And
why I say quite the day, not a good one.
Jimmy Garoppolo, remember him ten strikes, ten starts, huge contract.
(01:47:08):
Wait till hear about the day he had a practice.
Next in the Doug Gotlip Show, be sure to catch
live editions of The Doug Dot Leaps Show weekdays at
noon eastern three pm Pacific. Doug Gotlap Show rolls on
here on Fox Sports Radio every day. At this time.
We'd like to get you caught up on all the
stories of the day. We deal with the press, the
(01:47:29):
press fire, what do you got? Yankees today trying to
extend their lead over the Orioles in the air least
entering today they were only forty and a half games
up on the last place Orioles. Gary Sanchez helped out early,
swung on at a deep set on the track, looking up.
(01:47:49):
It is done in Monument Park, Gary Sanchez the Sanchino.
He drills one for a three run home run and
the Yankees take out four one lead. Now it was
four one, but that changed and in the end dug
Yankees have a six five lead, two out top of
the night, the two two swing on and miss struck
(01:48:13):
him out. Swinging ball game over. Yankees win, Yankees win.
Yankees win six to five on the Yankees Radio network
over the Orioles. Have you see what's happen to our angels?
Their rhyme music? I mean, man, they won the last
(01:48:34):
two against the Red Sox. Ou'ts how that one to three,
four or five, six, seven, eight, nine, nine out of eleven.
They had a big lead last night only cough it
up against the Pirates at home. Did you guys hear
what happened last month in that Yankees game? No swing
on and driving in field. It is high, that is
far gone. It's a grand slam. Eddie and Carnassi on
(01:48:58):
grand slams and the left field seats. Oh, no, celebracion
Edgar Canzone. Amazing. I don't know if it was better
than what happened last night though, swings and rows one
a da left, that ball is high, is far gone.
(01:49:19):
I mean, you can't make this stuff up. Another Yankee
home run against Baltimore and the Yankees on one pitch
take a one nothing leaveing. It's been crazy. It really
has been. Uh it's like he'll run derby against them. Yeah, yeah,
seventeen two so far this season, the Yankees have been
gregorious over the origin. There goes to eat right. If
(01:49:42):
it's fair, If it's fair, it's gone. It is fair,
it's gone. Deeed hit one deep. Yes, indeed, this is
the dawning of the age of Gregorius. Oh the Greas.
Oh hey hey, Doug, show some respect. Far it's gone Aaron, Judge,
(01:50:13):
Judge and blast and the seats and right center all arise.
Those were just home runs from like the last three
weeks or so. But it's been it's been pretty crazy. Hey, Yankees,
No more, no more, no more. I don't I don't
have any more Yankees. GF Brian Cashman was actually held
(01:50:36):
up at gunpoints by police in Connecticut recently after police
thought he was driving a stolen vehicle. He asked. TMZ
had the story that Cashman was actually driving his vehicle,
which was stolen recently but has since been recovered, but
the police didn't take it off of the stolen list,
so they ran the plates. They thought that it was
(01:50:58):
obviously still stolen. They said that he matched the description
of seven bald and jewish, brandished a gun recently, and
that's why they also pulled him over. But so, yeah,
this this does happen. You know this, this does happen.
It's a misunderstanding. I think the most surprising part of
(01:51:20):
the story was that I think he drives a jeep right.
It was a yeah. I just wonder if it was
like top down like big wheels, you know, system bumping.
He gets pulled over, like what what are you looking at?
Jeap guy, bob tat it was. It was a jeep er.
A Geo swung on and hat ball is high hit us,
(01:51:42):
far hit us come another home run for Geo or
sella Geo or Shella the most happy Fella. The Yankees
pick up where they left off and boomer. They have

I'm serious. Did you see it on HBO? Oh it
was actually on the real I'm i am dead serious.
(01:52:25):
They did. They did a thing on John Sterling. Bryant
couple did so. Yep, true story. This is an actual
true story and it's not a joking matter. A forty
one year old Fresno man died after taking part in
a taco eating contest last night and a minor league
baseball game in Fresno. Authorities say Dana Hutchings collapsed during
(01:52:45):
the Fresno Grizzlies contest, and despite an effort to perform
the Heimlichen CPR, Hutchings was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
It's just terrible, right, Like this is a this like
a harmless minor league, um my e league game where
you have like Taco Tuesday. Everybody's in celebrating Taco Tuesday.
And guy chokes on a taco because it's a taco
(01:53:07):
eating contest. That's nuts. Yeah, it's crazy stuff. Sad story.
We'll stay in a northern California if you will. I
know Fresidol is not northern, but it's at least north
of Yeah. Forty quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo through five straight interceptions
in training camp practice today. Five straights, Yes, five straight.
(01:53:28):
It was the Oprah Winfrey and you get an interception,
and you get an interception, and you get an interception.
Oh yes, speaking of five straight, the Yankees beat the
Orioles for their fifth straight way. Yankees have a six
five lead two ounce top of the night the two

(01:53:49):
game over n Yankees. When Clippers are close to hiring
former Calves head coach tylo to be the team's top
assistant to head coach Doc Rivers. This according to The
New York Times, Louis linked to the Lakers head coaching
job obviously didn't get it. Contracts seemed to be an issue.

not offering. But Tyler, do you think he's getting three years,
six million year to coach the Clippers? Yeah, that's just
to be uh. Doc Rivers right hand man, Tiger Wood
says he feels way way better than he did a
week ago at the Northern Trust, so he will tee
(01:54:30):
it up in the BMW Championship tomorrow. Still didn't hit
full shots during the back nine of the pro am today,
but Tiger will see it up at mcdian outside of Chicago.
Be fascinating to see if he can bounce back because
he was a mess. He didn't feel good all week,
and all of a sudden he feels better. But we'll
see if the early work actually makes him feel worse.
So that's the thing with the back, you just don't
have it every day. Ohio State University has followed paperwork
(01:54:52):
to trademark the phrase the Yeah. What do you think
about that? Now? Is it trademark the Ohiose University or
just a w just the word the But they have
already produced hats in T shirts that say yeah that
just say the on it and would be in the
Ohio State colors. I don't feel like that's going to
get by. I don't feel like they get the that's
(01:55:14):
that's I could be wrong. You know. Michael Buffer has
has his trademark, hung out with him on Saturday night.
All right, there's things you have to pay him if
you want to say, oh yeah, that's right, you know.
Or what's his name from the Jets formerly of the
Jets has the can't wait? Scott Scott he had that
trademark and uh pat Riley at three peat trademark. Yeah.
(01:55:37):
Do you think pat right like calls people? Has his
lawyer called people are like, hey, I heard you used
three pete in a sentence on the radio. That's gonna

(01:56:04):
Another three run home run for Glabor Tours, Glabor Day.
He is the Glabor of the month. Three run the Dodgers.
The lawyers scored fifteen runs last night. No Doyer highlights, Wow,
(01:56:27):
those lawyers And that's the press banging out there and
pressed that was the press. Okay, So uh little ground
we covered. Um. Look, I think Antonio Brown the word.
The two worst parts about our one you're at a
new job and people don't give you a pass at
(01:56:47):
your new job because you don't have sweat equity. Everyone
who's been a new job knows that your first sixty
ninety days you do all the right things. The second
part is you can't find out how good Derek Carr
is if he doesn't have that big weapon to work with.
Let's Doug Golip Show.
