(00:26):
to the Thursday Pod. Great stuff for you, man, I'm
telling you what you are going to love. Today's pod.
Dalton Risner joins us Broncos offensive lineman. We will talk
a little bit of football, but a lot about a
new house he just moved into. George Carl will join us.
Wait to hear what he said about why he snubbed
Michael Jordan's at a steakhouse in Chicago or Seattle or
maybe parts unknown. And Brandon Weed will join us. We'll
(00:48):
get his thoughts in the dock and his thoughts five
things that every rookie quarterback should do when they first
arrive in their new facility. All right, first though, I
want to give you some context to the Russell Wilson story.
O What Up America? Doug Gottlie Show, Fox Sparts Radio
we'll talk about Blake Snail's comments up coming, why it's
(01:09):
good and it's bad. Let's talk about the last dance.
Does everybody know what's coming Sunday? Does everybody know what's
coming Sunday? Sunday? Just you're where is? And I have
no idea If they're gonna tell us what was really
wrong with Michael Jordan's it's not just the last shot,
(01:30):
because the last shot, which is an unbelievable shot in
the series of events that led Michael Jordan to ending
his bulls career as a champion in the game winning
walk off f U f U Salt Lake City shot
right hold the follow through? It was butter But do
you know, Ramos, do you know what's coming Sunday? I
(01:51):
would say the end? No, one, not just the end.
But there's something. There's something that happened a year before
the end. What happened the year before the end? Music?
Do you know? Okay? Um? Flu game, Flu game? I
(02:12):
don't know. I have no idea how sick Michael Jordan's
really was no idea, but he appeared to be sick
as a dog, right and he kicked their as I
can't flu Game is Sunday. I would assume that's episode nine,
(02:34):
Episode ten is all the last the last year, and
then what everybody's doing now, probably a little look back,
look forward, etcetera, etcetera. Flu Games Sunday. We'll get to
that upcoming saw this story. Chris Sims, who joins us
usually weekly on The Doug Gotlip Show, said that the
Browns of the Seahawks discussed the possibility of trading Russell
(02:57):
Wilson for at least the number one overall pick. Mike
Floria added this by saying, some are close enough to
the situation to know what may have happened, believed that
Wilson eventually will be traded in Intriguing destinations would include
in our view, the Cowboys, the Raiders, and the Saints. Okay,
the Saints. The draw there is quite obviously Sean Payton.
(03:19):
The Cowboys is the biggest brand in the sport, and
the Raiders are in Vegas, and his wife as a performer.
I would point out that, uh, we'll give credit where
it's d Colin Cowherd talked about it like a year
ago that Russell Wilson doesn't want to be in Seattle
because market size wife not happy there. Right. But here's
(03:44):
the thing that I want you to realize. I was
listening to Colin Cowherd for three hours defend how great
a player Russell Wilson is. Find somebody who loves you
the way that Cowherd loves Russell Wilson. Right, And I
think Russell Wilson is awesome. Backyard football at the end
of the game, Every Seahawk game looks the same. It's close,
(04:07):
it's not as high scoring as you think. Even if
they're overmatched, they can find a way to put it
in Russell Wilson's hands and see if he can dig
him out of the hole. Like right, For most of
the last season, I defended Russell Wilson ahead of Lamar Jackson.
I would. I would say that Russell Wilson it was
(04:28):
more invaluable to his team on the field than even
Lamar Jackson. Not the Lamar Jackson didn't command and West
didn't play great, But that was a really good football team.
Well built offensive line, tremendous running game. They got three
tight ends because you know he needs a good catch radius.
He got the best kicker, and for the style that
(04:49):
they played, defense, kicking game, offensive line, it all works together.
The Seahawks have a wildly flawed roster. They haven't had
an offensive line in years. They tried to read build
the legion of Boom taking games, hit or miss uh
the They lost all three of their top three running
backs to season ending injuries and still found a way
(05:09):
to make the playoffs and at least be marginally competitive
on the road against the Green Bay Packers. In terms
of value, I don't think there are many human beings
on earth who could do for their team what Russell
Wilson did for his That said, that said the reason,
and I know this for a fact, this is not
(05:31):
the reason Aaron Rodgers doesn't like Russell Wilson. The reason
Richard Sherman didn't like Russell Wilson is not because either
of them think you can't play. It's because both of
those dudes, no matter how flawed you think their personalities are,
they are real dudes. Right. I don't agree with all
(05:54):
of Richard Sherman's He's blocked me on Twitter, like I
don't unders agree with some of his comments, but that
is a real dude, from the hood to Stanford to
All Pro Pro Bowl, Super Bowl like Hall of Famer.
The second he retires in five years, he'll be a
Hall of Famer. But more than anything, he talks to talk,
(06:15):
he walks the walk. He is the real, authentic deal.
He will look in the eye and tell you I
just don't like you, and there's not much you can
do about it because he doesn't. He's not gonna fake it,
Aaron Rodgers. What Aaron Rodgers gets accused of is being
too honest, too real. All right, you know, well he
(06:36):
didn't really dig his new head coach because his new
head coach didn't exactly come with great credentials, and he
was running a copy of an offense that isn't necessarily
quarterback dependent. So yeah, he's challenging some ideas there, right
this this this this offseason, he did a podcast in
which he talked about essentially being an atheist, unapologetically. Right,
(07:03):
you have all these other guys who will will fake
it because it's easier to fake it. Being real could
be hard to lose friends or lose acquaintances that act
like they're your friends. Not not Aaron Rodgers, not Russell Wilson.
Those are not not Not Rodgers, not Richard Sherman, those
are real dudes. Russell Wilson something else there. It doesn't
(07:26):
mean he's not a super talent, but he's a politician,
you know, it just is and that's okay. There's a
lot of those guys in sports. There's a lot of
guys that want to portray an image that is much
easier for you to like. But the idea that that
(07:47):
they thought about trading him, that someone leaked the story
to Cowherd, that he wants out, that others are saying
the trades of possibility when it makes no sense right
when on the surface, it would make no no sense
at all that Seattle would trade Russell. Why would you
ever trade Russell Wilson that dude single handedly seems to
(08:09):
win you games Because there's gotta be more to it.
Maybe he wants out and they're kind of tired of
him wanting out, and they have trouble with guys buying
into Russell Wilson because people don't think he's real. Makes sense. Again,
(08:30):
this is not saying that Russell Wilson is a bad guy.
He's just not the guy that he wants you to
believe that he is. And no one can spot a
phony better than an athlete because they've been recruited several
times in their life. Once they reached any sort of
(08:52):
start him at a young age, in high school or
in college, everybody wants a piece of them and they
start to figure out the world a lot easier as
to who's real and who's phony. I find that that athletes,
you know, they've been through a lot in their lives,
and they can appreciate any sort of background, any sort
(09:16):
of diverse thinking, as long as you don't hide it,
as long as you don't pretend to be something you're not.
And my my sense of Russell Wilson is not that
he's a bad guy, but that no one thinks they
actually know Russell Wilson because all he talks about is
(09:38):
the twelve and Seattle and how much he loves it
there and this and that the other thing. And yet
behind the scenes he's telling people who wants out, and
they've actually offered him up for trade, which, by the way,
only points out also the stupidity and dysfunction within the
Cleveland Browns. Do you want to trade Russell Wilson to Cleveland?
Tell me how, let's get it done? Number one overall
(10:00):
pick which you hope right? In that case, it was
Baker Mayfield, which you hope, maybe with a little luck,
could end up being a quarter as good as Russell
Wilson is as a player. I'm not sitting here tell
you Russell Wilson's a bad guy. I'm not telling you
he's a bad player. He's a phenomenal player. He's amazing
(10:22):
and revolutionize the sport. An athletic, undersized quarterback who can
make all the plays throwing the football in and out
of the pocket, especially out of the pocket on the move.
Nobody sets their feet and has that kind of whip
and torque coming off that out of their arm like
Russell Wilson. Nobody. But when enough guys tell you like it,
(10:44):
I don't think he's real. When the team is talking
about trading him and he's leaking out, that don't love
being here. That ain't what everybody perceives him to be.
And I would say that's the rub with so many
guys that have played with him in Seattle. Why don't
you love Russell Wilson. That's why I could love him
(11:06):
if I just knew who he really was. All Right,
we got a lot to get to here. On The
Golic Show, Um Dalton Dalton Rising is gonna join us
from He's a Broncos offensive lineman. They have some dudes
in Denver. Dudes, He's a talented young offensive lineman. Have
you seen what Denver's doing skill position wise? George Carl
(11:28):
is gonna join us at the West four on the East.
George Carl, who Michael Jordan claims that before Game one
of the NBA Finals snubbed him in a restaurant? Did
that happen last? George Carl and my boy Brandon Wheten
joins us. What it's really like behind the scenes as
a quarterback and how can can you be real or
(11:52):
do you have to be what corporate America wants you
to be as a quarterback in the NFL? Coming up next,
sa Kwan Barkley had some interesting comments in terms of
what he's working on and what he wants to be.
Can he can he be the next Christian McCaffrey. Be
(12:13):
sure to catch the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio. Ah ap Okay, Dan,
Dan Buyer, what are these chips called? You're amazing? Let's see.
I told you they're wrap chips. That's the that's wrap snacks,
(12:35):
wrap snacks. But it's the cheddar and barbecue CARDI B flavor.
Yeah they are, I told you yesterday like you wouldn't
think they are, aren't they? Wow? I feel like Meg
Ryan and when Harry met Sally, Yes, yes, yes, right.
(12:58):
I will also tell you that another good chip that
I don't think gets as much pub I think these are.
I think these are the best chips right now. But
the ruffles all dressed are another. Yeah, new audience today.
Maybe the m honestly baked chips are like the only
(13:21):
chips I don't like. I'm not a big sour cream
and union guy, not a big um. I love saltan vinegar,
but it do feel like it's a little bit like
sour straws or sower belts, like if you have a
couple too many, your tongue is done for like a week,
like the hydrated m hm. I bet se Kwan Barkley
(13:41):
doesn't eat chips. You can't look like that and need chips,
like literally, the he's the after picture for any video.
Have you seen that British guy on social media who's
just ripped to all like British Africa black guy who
like he has a girlfriend who's also like ripped up,
and he's like throwing her around. He can do all
this amazing stuff. Literally, he's like the only guy I've
(14:04):
ever seen with a better looking body than se Kwan Barkley.
I mean Sekon Barkley's. I mean he's just legendary with
his lower body power. He told this to s n Y.
I'm a big believer in taking care of the little things. First.
I'm gonna be the best player and leader I can be,
and that takes care. The rest will take care of itself. Smart.
They don't need to negotiate through the media. Obviously, the
(14:26):
giants believed in you. That's why they picked you as
high as they picked you, which I thought was too high.
But look, he's a stud. You know if you can
get a stud running back for five or six years,
I don't I don't hate it. I just hated it
that I thought they could have had Sam Donald and
then you've always could have circled back and taken a
running back. Later on that said, can you see the
(14:47):
money that Christian McCaffrey got, You see the money that
Ezekiel Elliott got. You start to think to yourself, well,
that's what se Kwon Barkley is gonna get, that's what
they're asking about. Right. I guess here's the problem with
say Kwan Barkley. He is as good and maybe better
than advertised, right, Like se Kwan Barkley is a stud.
(15:10):
He's rushed for a thousand yards in both of his
first two years with an offensive line that's work in progress,
although I will point out that Dave Gentleman smartly continues
to improve that offensive line. Do you know his first
year he had ninety one catches. I don't know how
many people realize that. His first year he had ninety
one catches. Now last year only fifty two catches. But remember,
(15:30):
because of injury, he only played thirteen games. So if
you pro rated, he probably ends up with seventy eighty catches,
and he only rushed for a thousand yards. You pro
rate it, he probably rushes for twelve yards. Yet again,
twelve hundred yards and let's say seven yards just so
receiving that's good. The problem is that's not Christian McCaffrey good. Right,
(15:59):
I'm again and I and numbers aren't everything, but they
definitely are something and what we have to realize about
Christian McCaffrey, who has been the league one year longer
than sa Kwan Barkley. Um, look, McCaffrey, here's a guy
(16:20):
with eight catches, a hundred and seven catches, a hundred
and sixteen catches, has not missed a game in any
of the in any of the years, and this year
had seven yards rushing with four point eight yards per carry.
So they're essentially the same running back. The differences Christian
McCaffrey is like an elite level wide receiver, and they
(16:44):
can both play third downs as they're both pretty good
at past protection. McCaffrey's seen is better. Say, Kuan obviously
has the ability to be great considering his overall strength.
But like, look, I don't think it's bad news. Everyone
talks about the running back market being bad. I don't
think so. I think for the top, there's just what
(17:05):
it's gonna be. The running back market is going to
be what the rest of the world is. No middle class.
You're gonna have four or five guys making you know,
double digit I mean, uh, eight figures, eight figures, and
then the rest of the running backs are going to
be making lower six figures. There's a couple in the
(17:27):
middle of the Melvin Gordon's who's overpaid with the Broncos
or whatever. There's a couple in there. But for the
most part, you're gonna have the rich, and those guys
have to be able to carry you. Play three downs,
play sixteen games, you know, and then next year play
seventeen games, and then you're gonna have everybody else who's
gonna be making, you know, a couple million a year
(17:48):
split and carries. Be sure to catch the live edition
of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m.
Easter noon Pacific. Risinger joins us on The Doug Gotlip
Show here on Fox Sports. Tray is a stud offensive
lineman part of the Rebuilt offense with the Denver Broncos,
and he joined on behalf of Special Olympics. First, Dalton,
(18:08):
how are you? Where are you? I'm doing great. Thank
you for having me on. I really appreciate it. I'm
actually in Parker, Colorado. So I got a new house
in April with me and my girlfriend and we're hunkering
down here in Denver getting ready to roll for the
Broncos season. Man, Okay, so you moved in under quarantine. Yeah,
so I was in Kansas City for off season when
(18:30):
things started getting pretty bad. We already planned on buying
a house, so we were already going through inspection. That
this is right when things were kind of getting bad.
So we actually got here a week earlier, asked to
get in the house a week earlier than what they
expected because we knew things were about to shut down.
So right when we got here, pretty much everything that
shut down. There's a stay at home order, so kind
of right in time. But we definitely have been struggling
(18:52):
to furnish this place with everything going on. Okay, and now,
so are you watching like h G TV shows and
getting getting ideas? You know? Is she doing Pinterest to
kind of figure some things out as well? Oh? Man,
hobby lobby open the other day and we've been there
two or three times. Man, so you can understand. I'm
I've been pushing cards full of pictures. I feel like
I could paint myself, you know what I mean? Yeah,
So I mean like, are you handy? Can you do
(19:14):
like a wood wall? Can you can? Can you do
some things yourself to kind of decorate the house? Oh,
most definitely, you know, we've already built some of the signs.
We went to home depot and built a welcome sign
with with the last name of Riisner. You know, we
got fixed the hot tub. I got myself a couple
of drills and some good tools around the house. So
I was raising Wiggins, Colorado, a little farmtown. So if
(19:34):
I wasn't handy, i'd probably hear it from my dad. Um, okay,
So the thing you're best at in around the farm,
oh man, I'd probably say building fence. If anyone ever
needs a barbed wire fence, I can do a barb
wire fence with a fence post every two or three
t post barbed wire, I could probably do five strands,
so I could build a fence, that's for sure. How
do you how do you keep from like cutting your
(19:57):
hands out? Like you wear gloves? I mean, how do
you how do you do it? Yeah? Good leather gloves. Man,
you gotta wear leather gloves, And honestly, you can grab
that bob wire fence with those gloves and unless you're
throwing your hand on it, it's not gonna hurt too bad.
So if you don't go gloves, though, you're gonna have
shredded hands. By the end of the day, Donald Rodger
and joining us in the Doug Glip Show here on
Fox Sport Traders. So is this your first home? Yes,
(20:17):
this is the first home I've ever moved into. You know,
I've been from apartment to apartment or rented a house
when I was in college. But this is the first
place I can actually call home. It's pretty exciting. This
is awesome. This is so much better than talking about
your team, which I think is gonna be really good
on offense. Um, okay, first thing, okay, so okay, so
you're you're looking you and your girlfriend. No no kids, dogs,
no dogs, no cats, nothing yet. Okay, So what were
(20:39):
your must like? What were your must haves? I gotta
have this in the in the house, Like, well, you're
gonna think I'm crazy much my must My must were
I had to have at least an acre because I'm
a country boy. I want some land. My second must
is it had to have a pool. And my third
must do is it had to have room for a
big basement. Slash man kids and her. Her must were
(21:00):
way more important, like the type of paint of the house,
the modeling of the house, how it looked on the
outside bedrooms how the master bathroom was, and her must
ended up being way more important. I'm glad we went.
You guys know how it works. Man, we went with
more of her must. You know, I got the land
and I got a big basement that I already have
big buck hunter in and popa shot and fun stuff.
(21:21):
But I didn't get the pool. So I'm actually trying
to get a pool put in the backyard and that
will kind of check off the last thing off. Now
you have a hot tub though, right, I do have
a hot tub. I don't know how you knew that,
but I do know you said you you said I
fixed the hot tub, Like, oh, there you go, I
will I actually, I'm I'm actually listening to you. Um so,
so here here's the thing, dude, Like, we don't have
(21:41):
a pool in my house. I need to get a
pool my house. I got kids, and my kids like
we gotta had pool. But the hot tub is way
more important to the pool. Pools overrated hot tub, And
I like when I have when I've lived in a
place with a pool, like I this is the last
house I will ever own that does not have some
form of water in the backyard. Um, but the the
hot tub an absolute must. A pool is you know
(22:03):
the problem of the pool is they get you with
all the hardscape that they want to charge you with,
Like the cost of pool could be manipulated, but the
herd scape is where they really get you exactly. And
that's kind of what I'm going through now. I'm getting
quotes from several companies and I'm just type of guy.
I want to get home from a hard day of
work and I want to just jump in a pool
and I want to be able to grill out while
I'm in the pool stuff like that. I'm actually in
the hot tub right now. Man, That's awesome, we know. Okay,
(22:27):
that would be That would be amazing. That would be
that would be amazing. Um. Okay, well there's a bunch more.
Did you go thirty year fixed? Did you go adjustable? Arm? Well?
What did what did you do? I have I would
have my own suggestion, by the way, for you. But
what did you do in terms of financing? Okay, yeah,
I don't know if my financier would be upset, but
I went seven year good interest interest only nice? You
(22:48):
know I'm planning than Yeah, yes, sir, you're not nobody's
nobody's gonna say, especially a professional play. You're not gonna
stay in the same house when you don't have kids
for thirty years. That's that that that's used the interest
you can offset some of the taxes that I whoever
is advising you, or if you came up with yourself.
Don't you wish they taught that in college? Right, Like, Hey,
(23:08):
here's how here's that you should buy a house, here's
the should look for a house, here's that you should
finance a house. Here's that you should play the market.
Why don't they do that? I don't know. We sit
there and we learned. I mean, I'm not nothing against
any type of school of their education, but we sit
there and learn stuff that we do we don't want to,
we don't want to learn. But if they have financial
advising classes in high school or tax classes or things
(23:28):
that we meet my girlfriend talked about all the time,
things that we actually need to know for life, things like,
I'll be real honest with you, man, my financial advisor
handles a lot of that. I have no idea how
taxes work. And some people might hear me and say, wow,
that's bad, But listen, I play football and I've been
on the farm. I know how to do really good
at those two things. But when it comes to taxes,
I have no idea and I completely agree with you.
(23:49):
That needs to be something we we do. Uh Dal
Riser Jonas and the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Okay,
let's let's get let's get to your team. Now you
have like stud running backs, you guys draft another stud
wide receiver. You guys got some guy. You guys got
some dudes. Now gets he had some dudes? What is
(24:10):
a great? Yeah? And and it felt like Drew and look,
they protected him in his first year and didn't opened
up in the playbook, but it felt like he kind
of earned your guys respect, give me your sense. And
I know you guys haven't been able to get together
in person, but what it feels like with this offense
heading into the end of the off season. Yeah, you know,
(24:31):
Drew earned my respect when when I roomed with him
in O, T, A S and then camp. You know,
Drew was playing a voice memo so that he could
play it back into his headphones as this as as
if an offensive coordinator was playing it to him, and
then he would say it out loud in the room,
trying to be confident in his calls. That way the
huddle would be secure. Drawn Expo markers on the white board,
I mean. And that was when Joe Flacco was the
(24:52):
guy and Drew knew it. But Drew was He was
wanting to be ready for when he got a shot.
And you know, he proved at the end of the
year he wants for one of the five games in
had a tough game in Kansas City, but we we
respected Drew so much because of how he prepared all
year and then how he came in and just sparked
the whole offense. His swagger on the field, the energy
he brings, he up lifts up, lifts the whole offense
(25:13):
behind him, and not on the offense, but the team.
He's a guy that we want to play around. He's
a guy you can rally around, and he's a guy
you can trust. So we're really excited to see how
Drew does in a full six team, seventeen game season
and hopefully four games after that this season. And I
have the tremendous amount of respects with Drew and I
think he's gonna have a great year and we have
the weapons to do it, so as an offense, we
have no excuses to make things happen. And it's really interesting.
(25:35):
Dolt Riser joining us offensive lineman with the Denver Broncos.
You were a second round picked last year. You got
no a fan there too. Um. I mean, you know
I spoke of your running backs. But you guys are
really young, right, Like the been missing an offense for
a couple of years. The offensive line had been a mess,
and it really feels like John Elway they went and
(25:56):
you guys are kind of growing up and learning together.
Is there a on because there are so many kind
of like aged guys. There's a huge bond and not
only that we're like age, but we're like minded. He's
going out and getting a lot of kids are They're
alike in a lot of ways. Were competitive, We want
to win, you know, Court and Sutton one of the
most competitive guys I know. Philip Lindsay undrafted comes in
(26:17):
and earns the spot. Where's his tail off to be
the guy? You know? You know myself. You got glasgow in,
who's a blue blue collar guy. You know, we have
all these guys coming in. Noah fanse Drew lock we're building,
you know, Spradley Chub von Miller. We have a bond
on this team of guys that want to win. And
even though you've got a guy like Bond who's won
pretty much every word possible, including the super Bowl, you know,
(26:38):
he's still hungry. He wants to go win again. So
I think Vic Bangio, being the blue collar, old school coach,
he is just like my coaching college, Bill Snyder. You know,
They're they're developing a program that's based off guys that
want to work hard and they want to do it together.
And that's our big goal for this year is to
continue creating that bond and we're just we're hoping to
get back to the facility as as quick as possible
(26:59):
because we want to get back together and get this
thing rolling. If somebody comes over to your house housewarming, um,
let's just be honest. Your your girlfriend red white wine
or a different kind of booze? What she what? What
does she desire? Red wine? She's gonna want like her loo,
like a really really bitter I think it's better. She
thinks it's good, but she's gonna want some good red wine.
(27:19):
And I'm gonna want the exact opposite. I'm gonna want
a cold white wine moscatto, the sweetest stuff you can find,
like a dessert wine. All right, Uh yeah, okay, prosecco
as well, pretty pretty pretty sweet. Um. Okay, tell me
what you're doing with the Special Olympics because obviously so
many events are being canceled or postponed. Are how how
(27:40):
are you able to to do some work for them?
And and are their events going to go off this summer? Yeah?
So Special Olympics is doing a lot, believe it or not.
You know, they are special, an amazing program, you know
the whole They're a global movement. You know, they use
sports to create a world where everyone's accepted. And that's
why I became a part of Special Olympics. That's why
I wanted to be a part of what they do
because worked with these Special Olympians that honestly impact me
(28:02):
two times more than I impact of them. I try
to impact them as much as I can. But their
positivity and energy for life despite their disability and quotation marks.
You know, some people might think they don't view it
as a disability, and I value that so much, you know. Yeah,
their games have been canceled right now due to the coronavirus,
but they already have a program you know called School
of Strength that's up and running right now, and its
(28:24):
due to no no sports being able to happen. That's
how they get to these kids, that's how they keep
these kids intertwined, and how they teach them teamwork and
leadership and kind of how they transcend them into everyday
life with their unified schools. So Becky Lynch with a
w W E. You know, she created a video and
send out videos regularly to all these Special Olympians for
(28:44):
them to stay active, for them to get on zoom
chats or skype calls and be able to stay interactive
with each other and do workouts from home and do
these sports from home. So that's been really cool that
she did that, and that School of Strength thing is
really taken off globally. So I know their next games,
you're gonna be in Orlando in two thousand two, planned
to have over fans, So Special Olymics is always going
(29:05):
They do a great job of keeping these kids included
and making them feel special, which they very well are.
So I'm very happy to be a part of that
Bronco's offensive lyman Dalton Risinger joining us in the Doug
Gottlieb Show. We mentioned you're a wildcat every man. Yeah,
he m a w every man, a wildcat. Um. I
know you didn't play with Colin Clein, but Conkline has
the greatest nickname in by my estimation, in the history
(29:28):
of sport, Optimus Klein, right, Like that is a great
Is there a better nickname of a guy that you've
played with? Oh man, I probably wanted to say so,
I totally forgot about that. Con Cline was raised forty
five minutes before where I was in Colorado, homeschool kid
from Loveland, and he's a legend down there at Kansas State.
He's now the pretty sure the offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach, yeah,
(29:52):
QB coach and he which is funny because he didn't
ever throw the I mean he could throw it some,
but he didn't really throw it. Like I don't really know.
You know you ran of rock Man? Oh hey, that
eleven on eleven football. I mean, I'm an Oklahoma State
guy and every year, like damn, Colin Klein eleven on
eleven around the goal line, like no stopping, no stopping
that no stopping that? Dude, Hey, how did how did
(30:12):
Bill Snyder do it? Like I I know enough about
the history of college football kids state historically before he
took over one of the worst programs in the country, right,
and yet when he was there, you're great, You're really
good and competitive? How is it? What was what's the
secret sauce there? Yeah? You know, I could talk for
(30:32):
a while about coach Bill Snyder. I think the one
thing that he did the best is he was the
best life coach I've ever had. Yeah, he knew a
lot about football, but the time he spent on teaching
us how to be better father's teammates, friends, boyfriends, sons,
all that stuff. He did such a good job of
teaching us what really mattered in life, that football was
gonna end someday. And I think that he really sets
(30:53):
guys up for life. And if you really just talk
about football and how he changed that program, I think
that played a big partment. But it was even a
bigger part is he had a system. And I think
in football you have you have to have a team
that buys into the system. And they don't buy in,
you're gonna have guys half in half out, we're gonna
have guys quitting. No one's gonna really buy in the
become a team. And he had a system and he
refused to let people not buy in. If you hit
(31:15):
buy in, I've seen coach Snyders send away five stars.
I've seen him send away the number one juco recruiting
the country, and I mean send away is in. Tell
him to get off the team because Bill Snyder has
a system and if you don't buy into it, you
won't be a part of the team. Because he knows
he's been coaching so long that if he can get
guys to buy into a program and his system, that
we could be really successful. And that's what he forced
(31:37):
every single year. He had a system and and and
he demanded that we buy into it and if we did,
it was gonna work. And we saw that play out.
You know, we had good years where we went nine
and three, and we had some years when we went
six and six. But at the end of the day,
that's a tough conference in the Big twelve. And he
changed that program completely, and you know, I'm forever grateful
for him. I love saying in touch with Coach Snyder
(31:57):
and have a tremendous a matter of respect for him.
All that we've learned, Dalton is still trying to figure
out kind of the new home thing is getting great
financial advice bring a red and a white if you're
going over and better for her, sweet for him. And
if you're a pool guy in the Denver area and
you want a Bronco to be doing cannonballs into your pool,
(32:21):
you we can, we can connect you and you can
reach him and our thanks obviously to you and you
work with the Special Olympics. Dalton, great stuff man, appreciate
being our guest. Thank you so much. It was a
proovage to be on here. And anyone that wants to
check out more about Special Olympics go to Special Olympics
dot org and trying to pledge to be apart or
check out my and my social media Dalton Underscore Risers
safety stick. Thank you guys. All right, thanks Dalton Dalton
(32:42):
Riser joining us on the Doug Gottlieb Show, Who Looks
the Worst After the Last Dance Documentary? We'll discuss next.
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Fox sports
radio dot com and within the I Heart radio app
search f s R to listen Love Dog Olive show,
Fox Sports Radio. You know we're in top of the
(33:04):
Blake Stell comments at the top of the hour, and
I think, by the way, can can we send out
a tweet to have any of these TV producers tell
the guests that they're having on zoom to change their
camera angle right, Like is this that hard, Doc Rivers?
(33:27):
It doesn't even look like Doc Rivers, because all I
can see is great chin is double chin because it's
shot from the bottom side. Like whereas I'm looking at
Marcellus Wiley, which is a setup TV shot right, a
camera that is fixed in his house, but it's at
eye level or slightly above eye level. And marcellis is
a good looking dude, looks amazing. Doc Rivers looks heavy, old,
(33:53):
and like he's some giant looking down on us. Right,
he looks two eight five pounds because of the angle
of the shot. Is it that hard to have somebody
go like, hey, Doc, listen before you're on can you
raise the camera up I don't know, six nine inches
so that you look right. Let's get to a game. Okay,
this is game time on the Doug Gottlieb show. Damn
(34:20):
by what he got. Doug. The game today is I
feel a draft, two round draft, eight picks. Good. This
is what we're drafting today. Who comes out looking the
worst in the Last Dance Documentary? Doug, you'll have the
first pick. That means you'll actually have the last pick
(34:40):
of the draft as well, as we go with a
snake format. John Ramas will pick second. I'll go third.
Ryan Music will have the back to back picks as
we transition from the first to second rounds. All right, Doug,
you are first stop with the first overall pick. Who
looks the worst in the Last Dance Documentary? Number one? Unpick.
(35:01):
I don't think there was much of a much of
a debate about that one. Nope, especially because he's not
even there to defend him. So he's not there to
defend himself. And you know, George's kind of controlling this documentary.
He didn't like him. He's gonna get credit for breaking
up the bulls, even though he's not solely responsible. But
after the documentary he'll get the most of the blame.
(35:22):
He'll look the worst. All right, John Romos, you are next. Well,
even though he's in the documentary. I think he thought
I was gonna help him. I think Dave Jordan has
made it perfectly clear he's really put a clamp on
Isaiah Thomas. I think Isaiah Thomas. Look, I think they disagree.
It's your pick. Yeah, my opinion dog his trap boards
(35:48):
it is he reached for need Um. Look, I really
believe this. Isaiah actually looks like a fairly sympathetic figure
to some people. Some people like, why would Jordan just
own it? Right? Why don't own it? So do I
think he looks bad, yes, but at least there's a
you can get a little bit of sympathy where he's like,
because I beat him, because I didn't take his hand,
(36:09):
I'm not in the dream team. I would disagree from
that from that standpoint. There's there's a lot going on
to the third pick here. I don't know which way
to go on this, So I'm just gonna go. I'm
gonna go pip In just from I guess maybe recency bias,
just of what we had and the not changing, not
going into the playoff game in nine. So I'll take
(36:31):
Pippin at three. Alright, Right, pick Dan's a good pick.
It was sympathy early on the early episode was a
salary thing. Okay, So my number four pick, I'm gonna
go with Rhinsdorff. I think they've definitely done a very
good job at painting him as someone who's incredibly cheap,
even though I'm not sure if that's always entirely accurate
(36:52):
based off of the contracts that they chose to sign
at the time, but I do think that they've as
much as Jerry Krass has been the punching bag, I
think some of that is also spilled over to Ryansdorff. Now,
this number five pick is tough. Um. I am gonna
go with horse Grant because I did not think he
(37:12):
did have the line of the of the dock so far.
It was early on he was good, but I think
most of that was all wiped out based off of
him having to take the fall for Sam Smith's book
and what he did with the magic. So Horse Grant,
there's been nothing positive like from Horace like unfortunately, which
is which is a shame. That's not truly He called
(37:33):
the pistons the B word. That was the line of
the That was the line of thing, alright, that was
then that was it. Otherwise it's him snitching him leaving
have a great Horse Grant story that I'm gonna tell
off air. Alright, when you guys tell me if I
should say it on air. I'll make this quick. I'm
gonna say again, I'll do recency bias, but the memes
Gary Peyton just of Jordan's laughing. I had no problems
with the glove. I'll put Peyton sixth and I'll take
(37:56):
him sixth. Alright, John ro I'm gonna go off this
list put here. I think every NBA team the Bulls
beat look bad. The bull beat them all in six
NBA FI So goodbye, alright, some up, ye, Doug, you
have the last pick. Uh m hmm. Who looks the worst?
(38:22):
They are kind of all the bad guys are kind
of gone. Uh. I'll go Clyde to Glide, Clyde Drexler, Clydxler.
This is game time on the Duck Gottlieb Show. I'm
gonna talk about Blake Snell's commentary. Hey, it's comments why
(38:43):
I vehemently disagree, but understand that it's okay. To be
sure to catch the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio in the I Heart Radio a AP
whoa Tuck Leave Show, Fox Sports Radio. All right, here's
(39:05):
what I'm gonna do for you, Okay, Doug gott Leave Show,
coming to you live and direct from the City of Angels.
Here's what I want to do, is um, I want
to play for you what Blake Snell had to say?
And why? You know? Frankly, I'm you know, I'm I.
(39:30):
I don't think he should have apologized. I do I
agree with what Blake Snell said. No, I don't agree,
But does that mean he has to apologize? Ores that
mean no? Also not actually even close to the way
it works. Um, Look, Blake Snell picture Tampa Ray's correct kidding?
(39:54):
Say I made the easy joke, the low hanging fruit
joke yesterday about Florida sports, especially Florida baseball. They've been
practicing social distancing forever. When Marlin's Park, I have never
seen two people sit within six ft of each other.
Plenty of good seats available. This is what Blake Snell
(40:14):
posted on social media. If I'm gonna play, I should
we get the money I signed to be getting paid.
I should not begin half of what I'm getting paid
because the season is cut in half, on top of
a thirty three percent cut of the half that's already there.
On top of that is getting taxed. So imagine how
much I'm actually making to play, you know what I'm saying.
(40:34):
And on top of that, so all that money's gone,
and now I play risk in my life. And what
if I get the rona on top of half, I
get the rona. Guess what happens with that? Oh yeah,
that's stay that's in my body forever. That damage is
not gonna be like the damage that was done in
my body. That's gonna be there forever. Here's the big
mistake that he makes is talking about money. And there's
(40:56):
a massive disconnect there. Okay, And and I don't blame
Blake Stele because he's only been a professional athlete. This
idea that a professional baseball players like, Look, I signed
a contract I should get like, buddy, we're in a pandemic.
(41:17):
Thirty six million people are out of work. Those are
great Depression era numbers. And it has happened like that.
So I just I know you live in the athlete bubble. Look,
I live in a sports world bubble. I understand that.
And I've been very blessed in my life to not
(41:39):
have had to be the traditional media guy and make
you know, twenty grand work in a local radio station
and writing you know, you know, a couple hundred bucks
to write a newspaper column, you know, once a week
like that. That's not my I've lived a very blessed life.
I started out with nothing. We got something, but I
still had the person active of I live a blessed life. Hey,
(42:06):
this idea. The mistake that he made is like you said, hey, man, wait,
already took a pay cut. Now there might be less
and I'm getting taxed, Yo, what's up with that? That's
it's a valid point. Here's the opposite side. Lots of
people in the real world, rather losing their job or
getting furload like man, let's furload, you don't get paid.
(42:28):
The good news is you get to stay on insurance
while you're not getting paid and you don't have to work.
But you can't actually go anywhere. And a lot of
us who are working are taking voluntary pay cuts. I
saw one of our competitors where they announced like that
they're taking voluntary pay cuts. I actually know how that works.
(42:53):
There's nothing voluntary about the pay cut. Oh you know what, here,
here's back more the money that I had planned on making.
Like now, anyway, it works. But look, we all get it.
It sucks, right, But what level of suck is it? Right?
Because at the end of the day, you're still a
(43:13):
professional baseball player. You're still gonna be able. At some
point your wages will go back to the normal level.
The rest of us are gonna be left picking up
the shrapnel of like, all right, what's the new world looked? Like?
Does my job still exist? And and look, at some
point you need to play games again. And I'm sorry,
but we can't pay the same amount if we can't
put people in the stands, which, by the way, goes
(43:37):
into direct conflict with the other part of his statement,
which is like you get the rhona, I got the
Rona for life. Okay, So here's this, here's the decision,
Like we all make decisions and then you have to
own them. Decision one is don't play. My safety is paramount,
(44:00):
which you're allowed to. I would disagree with it, and
I would say, the numbers tell you that you're gonna
be fine. Numbers tell you that you're gonna be finding
his age in his physical condition. With his insurance, he
the likelihood that he either even gets the rownut let
alone is symptomatic, and that it affects him more so
(44:20):
than a bad version of the flu. You're talking about
the smallest infant infantest smile infintestimal percentage. But you don't play.
That's okay, But you know what you can't do if
you don't play. You can't expect to get paid for
services not rendered. Now, if your complaint is over the
(44:41):
level of compensation, that's fair, hey, but you also have
to take into account that, hey, dude, we've missed half
the season. We can't pay you for a season that
hasn't been played. We can't pay you for a season
that doesn't have fans. We can't. We might not even
(45:02):
be able to pay you for a season that has
broadcast games and could have sky high TV numbers. But
here's the crazy thing about the TV numbers. There's not
the advertising dollars to correlate with those TV numbers because
advertisers don't have that much money. Because all of the
basic advertisers like, look, we'd love to spend on advertising.
(45:24):
People are watching TV. But outside of you know, food
and beverage and pick up stuff you know outside of
Taco Bell and Chippotle and you know other stuff that
you go order in the mail. Lots of we don't
have money. We're trying to save money, and instead of
firing people, we cut our our marketing budget. So but
(45:45):
but here's the here's the bigger part. Does he contradict himself? Yes,
does he sound a little bit spoiled? Sure, But I
think all of that is reasonable. I think all of
these things are reasonable. Quarantine makes guys some people freak
out right, like you're a workout guy like I am,
(46:06):
and you can't work out, you just you know, like
even my kids and I'm the I'm the fun day,
I'm the fun parent any of my kids, Like, yeah,
I kind of worn out by you like that. These
things happen. Um. But the lack of understanding for where
where the world is in terms of uh financial stuff, bro,
(46:31):
I don't I don't know if you looked around, but
taking a pay cut is not the worst thing in
the world in comparison to what thirty six million people
are going through. Right, That's like that that's not the best.
The best of a bad scenario is they're like don't
tell anybody, but you can keep all your money, right,
(46:52):
that's the best. Second. Best scenario is, look, we're still
gonna pay you even if we don't play right, but
we're just gonna pay you as much. That's a good scenario. Um.
Worst scenarios are we're gonna furlow you, which means you
can't go work for somebody else. We still kind of
own you, but we'll give you insurance. Yeah, and hopefully
(47:14):
hopefully we can get your job back. Worst is like goodbye,
you know, hey, sorry you can but you can go
on cobra. You know you can pay for your own
insurance out of your own pocket and collect unemployment. So
but but again, I don't we just have to understand that,
(47:36):
Like all right, Blake Snell like, it's not the worst
person world. I don't think he has to apologize. That's
how he felt at the time. And and the big
thing is, none of these comments. This is what runs
counter too. I know Lebochard got all huppy because I said,
it's an idiotic comment of Doug Williams saying that Shaun
Watson was white, he would have gone higher in the draft,
(47:57):
would have gone above Trabisky, like race had some with it.
See that to me, you're basically calling Ryan Pace a racist. Okay,
those types of comments which are kind of defamatory and
you can't really protect you can't really there's no real
fighting back. Like all Ryan Pace can say is I'm
not a racist. I didn't pick but doesn't matter. Damage
(48:17):
is done by Doug Williams, who's still around in the NFL,
was a quarterback in the NFL, is in the front
office of the Washington Redskins um and and once you
kind of label somebody a racist, that's a really hard
thing to escape. Whereas Blake Snell is not labeling anybody anything.
He's just complaining and bitching that he's lost some money,
(48:39):
but he still has his job and he's not sure
he wants to play with the ROHNA, Right do do
we understand kind of the difference? And while I'm oh,
I'm cool with it, and I'm not cool with basically
calling people racists that I don't think there's any way
of either proving or actually is any racism. And a
decision to draft Mitchell Drobisky, which I disagreed with at
the time, but was made based upon their analysis. By
(49:03):
the way, that's the crazy thing about the Robinsky thing.
I have never defended the pick. I've never liked it
more than Deshaun Watson, never liked Hi more than Pat Mahomes.
Thought both of them were better. Everybody was. Lots of
people were surprised by it. Lots of people didn't then,
don't now, I don't think he's better. Didn't then. But
they had their reasons, and they picked their quarterback because
(49:27):
of those reasons. But blank snail, it's like, dude, just
the the healthy. First of all, I love when athletes
will do this. Men don't talk about my money. Well,
and okay, if you talk about your money, that we
can talk about it and expose the fact that as
really really, just do you want a bigger disconnect? Do
(49:50):
you do you want to a bigger disconnect then telling
people I can't believe I'm getting paid less for a
job that I'm not actually doing. Ah, you know, dude,
Like listen, we have people at our jobs that are
getting that are are told, hey, you can't come to
work for a couple of weeks. Back the weeks you're
(50:11):
gonna take off and we're not gonna pay you. Like no, no,
I want to go to work. No, No No, you can't
come to work because we just like it's bad. I
just pull your head out of the the backside and
look around. Just having a job. Having a job is
a good thing. Getting paid, even if it's a little
(50:32):
bit less or substantially less than you were gonna get paid,
but still getting paid for a job. You're not actually
doing that you done. I gotta pay taxes on it.
That's called being a citizen. That's called you do you
do you like the roads? Do you like the cops?
Do you like the fact that when people have lost
their jobs, they're able to collect whether it's you know,
(50:55):
unemployment or welfare or p p P or whatever. I
guess we that money comes from, you know. So it
may not be working great right now, but it's it's
worked for like over two hundred years, this sort of system,
and we adjust and we evolve. Please don't be that
guy who's so obtuse to what's going on the rest
(51:16):
of the world. But again, I don't have to apologize,
just to kind of take a breath and realize he's
in a much better place than most people, all right,
Your thoughts eight seven seven nine nine Fox eight seven
seven on Fox, George Carl's gonna join us. Oh, Tenen's way,
George Carl. If you're watching online, it's Fox Sports Trader
(51:38):
dot Com, the iHeart Radio app, you can download the show.
George Carl. Did he snub Michael Jordan's at a stake
dinner the night before Game one of the NBA Finals?
And what did should he put Gary Payton on Michael Jordan?
The whole series? You're gonna ask, George Carl never been
shy of opinions. He'll join us up coming in tennis,
but coming up next. Um, We've talked about Rod Goodell
(52:01):
and how I think he's done a better job granted
different challenges to Goodell as opposed to Adam Silver, who's
in his season and the season has been postponed as
of now. Dana White taking a completely different tact as
a commissioner of a professional sports league. He uh, And
(52:21):
you know what, It's something I suggested to Dana White,
I think twelve years ago. He kind of sort of
figured it out. Is next. Be sure to catch the
live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three
p m. Easter noon Pacific. George Carlin five minutes why
do you staw Michael Jordan The Steakhouse by George? Why?
(52:45):
Why George? Why do I'm gonna ask him all about
all that stuff? George call is great, he'll join us
up coming in in five minutes. Um. So uh, my
my old agent, I had one, I've only had two agents.
I have had three, actually three agents and almost twenty
(53:07):
years in this business. Um, they're they're all actually I
feel like very well respected. Um all are still kind
of in the bizes and I felt like at the
time each was perfect for that time of my career.
I had at my long time agent friend who has
actually written a book on him, little plug Steve Hers Uh,
(53:28):
and his book is called Don't Take Yes for an Answer.
It's a really kind of clever book. And he did
one of those things where he's like, I need a
quote for the cover. I gave him a quote for
the cover and he's like, yeah, well, I just sorry,
we just kind of ran out of space. Like, yeah,
if I was your client, you wouldn't run out of
space anyway. So um, he was advising the for Tita's
(53:55):
that this is like twelve fift twelve years ago or so. Um,
Fatita's obviously bought UFC. They sold it for four billion
dollars to Endeavor, which used to be w M E
well even more as another agency and um is brilliant businessmen.
(54:16):
And they didn't actually take my opinion at the time,
but that this was my opinion. I said, they were
they were trying to figure out why we can't get
the big corporate sponsors. And I said, why are you
trying like corporates like you just you can't have blood
sport and then expect Sears and Roebuck to get alongside,
(54:37):
even if most dudes who watch UFC are regular dudes
who shopped at Sears or J. C. Penny or Kmart
and Walmart. I understand that some of these are floundering businesses.
I'm but I'm just using the classic corporate America. You know,
you know we're talking about right, Nibisco, etcetera, etcetera. And
my my my point was just say effort and do
(55:02):
counterculture stuff. Uh. Dana White does not like a reporter
from the New York Times who's taken umbrage with Fight
Island that they're constructing, or the fact that they had
fights in Jacksonville in front of no fans this past week.
Here was Dana's response at a press conference early today.
(55:24):
There was an article in the New York Times today
that was very critical of the execution. That guy, that guy.
Do you know what happened with that guy? That guy
who has never covered the sport ever before, was writing
a story about um endeavor and then the UFC was
one of the endeavor. You know, And what you think
(55:46):
happened when this guy who and this paper covered the
UFC when they've never covered it before, what do you
think happened? The story was huge. They didn't kill her traffic.
Now now they're writing stories three a week and they're
putting post on live results. I'm giving what that guy thinks,
what he has to say or what he writes. Good
for him. He's he's pulling good traffic about like that.
(56:09):
I don't give up fair enough. Don't give him. That's amazing,
that's amazing. That is amazing. I mean, look, Dana owned
part of the UFC, so he got a he had
(56:29):
a big, big, big, big big check when that thing
was sold. He's still collecting his salary, so he really doesn't.
But I mean, that is have I ever told you
guys about the Spurrier zone. That is Spurrier Zone. Steve
Spurrier got to a point in his career where he
could say whatever you want. Well, hell, we just like
to play Georgia early in the year because they always
had a couple of guys suspended, people like whoa whoa whoa.
(56:56):
Spurrier could get away with it because you want to
hide from Trophy wanted Duke, you want it Florida wanted
to South Carolina right like you could. Danny can get
away with it. That's a different sort of commissioners. Be
sure to catch the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific. Carl
has has uh Furious George is a great book that's
out there. Of course, he's been a he's been a
(57:17):
commentator covering the NBA. He's been a longtime NBA head coach.
He's kind of have to spend some moments with us
year on The Doug Godlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Coach,
how are you I'm good again the summer starts. Um,
I've fair fair enough. Look, you're a guy who's had
you've had health issues in the past. Like first and
(57:39):
most important question, how is your health under quarantine with
with the coronavirus going around. I'm good, a a little board,
I'm uh, quarantine is I'm a little more social than
I I guess most people are. And I'm missing on
my golf times and my meeting from watching the game
(58:01):
in the bar and during a beer and talking to
It's not on all the coaches in town that we
get together once in a while, and there are a
lot of there's a lot of Abia alumni here that
we get together. We got we's done a couple on
by Zoom. But it's not the same. No, no, no,
he is good? Is good? All right? Good good? Um okay,
(58:21):
So take me back to your getting ready to play
the Bulls in the finals. Most important thing. Where is
this dinner where you supposedly brushed off Michael Jordan's Yeah,
my recollection is it was in Seattle. His recollection. I
think this recollection was it was in Chicago. Uh, you know,
(58:44):
basically it comes down to, is Doug you know back
then that you know I told my team they or
two before the playoffs started, no socializing, no frienday night
an even with Michael when nobody at the Bulls, I
don't want I don't want to see you out to
dinner or going to the lines, you're playing golf. I
don't want to see you doing any of that because
(59:06):
Michael has a d n A that he likes to
take those things and use them to his advantage. My
recollection was in Seattle when when we were down out
two and I didn't really want to talk to Michael anyways.
And then the question I have is didn't he stiff
me too? Couldn't have he walked over to my table?
(59:29):
I know he's the king, and I I should have
run over and said hello and in a way. But
you know, I've been with Michael ten times since then
and he's never mentioned it to me. I'm odd was
actually I played golf of them on in this time
and it never got And it's never been in my
radar that I was the stimulus or to elevate him
(59:51):
to beating us. But I don't know. You know, I
think there's playing in the NBA finals, playing in the
NBA final first time without your father, and knowing you
might play on father's name. I think those are pretty
good things that would probably motivated Michael to be even
at higher level of intensity and anger and aggressiveness to
be successful. George Carl joining us in the Doug Outlet
(01:00:13):
Show on Fox Sports Radio. What was the game plan
going into the series? Well, you know, most of the time,
it was the you know, when I think, Doug, you
might remember when Seattle, we did a lot of switching,
and we did a lot of double teams. So any
time we failed, we could get a really good double
team on him and taking rolls and or post ups
(01:00:34):
and or isolation situations, we double them. Other than that
we were going to rotate or our responsibilities on him
and then save Gary. The thing we said it was,
we'll save Gary for the end of the game. Well
and the end of the series. Well, Game one we
(01:00:54):
got beat by seventeen, so there wasn't an end of game.
Game two was a close game, and Gary played him
a lot in the last couple of minutes of that
game at the end of the game. Dame three game
too for people to remember Game two, that was when
Gary was guarding him and you threw a double team
Adam Late and it was Steve Kerr that hit the
big backbreaking shot, wasn't it It was? It was yeah, um,
(01:01:19):
but you know the three pointer didn't have as much influence,
even though they made more threes in the series than
we did. Um, the thing comes down to it was
a defensive series. They were a great defensive team and
I think we were a damn good defensive team. And
most of the games when we lost was we couldn't score.
(01:01:41):
You know, we couldn't get a flow, we couldn't get
a rhythm to the game everything, you know, And you
know how in the seven game series, what plays are
working the next game are usually taken away from working
because the teams prepare for it. And by game six,
you know, we're running place for Hercy Hawkins, who we
(01:02:03):
never ran place before, you know, just to try to
get some type of rhythm or find the matchup that
could be successful at a higher percentage than we were getting.
And you know, and the one thing I would look
when I look back on that series is named McMillan.
Garry Peyton was the heart of our team. He was
(01:02:26):
the energy, He was our energy bunny. He was our
anger guy. You know, we didn't always like how he
did it, but he lifted us. The guy that was
the soul of our team was Nate McMillan. He was
the guy that gave us confidence. He was the guy
that guided us. He was the coach on the floor.
He was totally unselfish. He was the guy that made
(01:02:47):
us feel feel really good. He played Game four in
Game five. We won both games, and I think we
actually played better than Chicago and both those games, and again,
I just wish we were to have had a series
we we actually had Nate to play because the name Nate,
it was kind of our our guy that we really
(01:03:08):
are glue guys. You know, he's a guy that brought
us together. You know, it's it's it's fascinating to again,
part of this is George carl our guest in the
Doug Otlip Show. Part of it is, as you're pointing out,
without saying as much, you do wish there was a
little bit better maybe basketball perspective, um of how it's
presented right like um like, I think it's interesting that,
(01:03:30):
you know, with the like the Kerr shot was not
mentioned in talking about that series. That was a huge
backbreaking shot because all you got to get is one
game in Chicago and it's a totally different You get
one out of two, and you had a legit shot
in game two. Um. But I I also think that
no one pointed out that Jordan used to live at
the free throw line, Like, yes, the game was more physical,
(01:03:52):
but he used to live. He shot what was it,
ten eleven and sixteen free throws in the first three games.
And one of the reasons you want to keep Gary
Payton offen was especially in Chicago, He's gonna get in
foul troupleh you gotta take him out the game, all right? No,
the the two SIPs, the two stats that beat us
with free throws and rebounds. Michael shot for the series,
(01:04:16):
shot like thirty six percent the last three or four
games this year. Uh, he had some average games. He
didn't play at a high standard every game. And the
one thing, we lose game three because of travel. You know,
if we had sleep, sleep deforation we were. We played
(01:04:38):
in Chicago on Friday night, lost game to honest Friday night,
probably gone an airplane around twelve thirty hoping to get
back to Seattle. Round two. Well, we hit a snowstorm
and Billings had to refuel. We didn't get back. I
didn't get to bed until like five thirty six o'clock
when the next game is Sunday, at twelve thirty. So
(01:04:58):
we had the practice on on Saturday. So Chicago is
going to bed after the game feeling good. They probably
had I walked through some sweater round ten or eleven,
may probably twelve and caught a playing at three or four.
We go to bed at five or six, and I
(01:05:18):
don't know when we had practice, probably around two or
three or something like that. And then we played at
twelve thirty and we came out flat. We came out flat.
We had an awful game, couldn't score Michael. That was
the one game Michael got loose and had I think
thirty seven or thirty eight, and we got down three
oh and all we had to do now is fight
(01:05:39):
for our pride and character of saving the season by
by fighting. And our team did I mean our most
I would say most teams that down in three oh
to a team has won championships and have Michael Jordan.
They might have given in, they might have thrown it in.
We didn't. And and then game six, you know, we
(01:06:02):
couldn't make a shot and it was a totally defensive game.
I think it was the five seventy five or something
like that, and it was I mean, you go back
and watch that game. The three ball actually is really
important in that game because they make like five or
six in the second half and we lose the su Yeah,
they were they were a little They were a little
ahead of the time in terms of having hybrid players. Right,
(01:06:25):
they had a lot of length, especially you know that
that second wave when they had Harper Ron Hartbrew could
guard anybody, right he had he had transitioned in his career.
Dennis Robin could guard Anyboddy Jordan could guard anybody. Pippin
could guard Anyboddy. Coo Coach wasn't a great defensive player,
but he was so big he could at least be
a presence like they had. They were. They were long
and range before long and range was was was really
(01:06:48):
in vogue. Um, I guess here's here's my question. Um,
how do you think, as a former coach in the
NBA that's dealt with all sorts of personalities, how do
you think Pippen comes off well paper has a clod
over his head because of the game. I mean, I
mean I talked to someone a couple of days ago
(01:07:09):
about it. It will never go away, you know, you know,
saying no to your coach and kind of saying no
to coup coach taking the last shot. I mean, I
mean and and the and the shot goes in. Yeah,
I mean it just doesn't. I mean, but then but
(01:07:31):
then but coach coach, he didn't he didn't say, like
he said, I wish it would involve happened. But then
he said, if I had the chance, I probably would
have done it again, Like why would like, really, more
than twenty years later, you wouldn't think, you know, I
wish I would have just gone in and run the
plane and Tony would have hit the shot. Never, you know,
Like I I was stunned that while he owned it,
with more than twenty years to think about it, he
(01:07:54):
didn't say I shouldn't have done it. Yeah, I mean,
I think that passiveness of being definitive and just admitting
to your vulnerability. And we all did stupid things in
our lives that we all, you know, deep downside, we
wish we wouldn't have done. But I love Scotty Tivan
(01:08:15):
as a player. You know, people you know says, you know,
I thought Scotty Pepper was the top five six players
when he started playing in that in in that series.
I think he's specially placed both ends of the court.
Is a point guard at point forward or wherever you're playing.
He has point guard mentality. He's long as hell, and
(01:08:37):
you know he has a pride in playing defense, probably
more so than Michael at the end of his career.
Last thing, you pointed out that the story that was
told about you with the with the Dinner was like
nobody even brought it up. That kind of feels like
a narrative for the series, which is that Jordan's still
trying to settle scores even now. Do you think that
(01:09:01):
that should affect how we think of him and how
we how we perceive Michael Jordan after watching these documentaries. Um,
you know, Doug, it it's hard for me to you know,
Michael Jordan's You can argue there have been maybe some
players that can play on his level, but there is
no one with his talent and his the man to
(01:09:25):
play with intensity, focus and when it all costs. No
one I've never competed against it by a guy more
competitive than Michael Jordan's both on the golf course, playing
poker and playing basketball. I mean, the man it was
driven and he never took her day off. I mean
(01:09:49):
every every day he has it in his life. I
think I think he just loves competition. Yeah, it's really
George carl Our guest on the Doug Gottlip Show on
Fox Sports Radio. When you watch your old team and
what kind of when you think back, Um, what what
does it? What does that feel like now twenty some
odd years removed from the NBA finals. Well, I've been,
(01:10:14):
you know, in this pandemic mentality. I've been watching a
lot of my my playoff games and what it tells
me is the game has changed. I mean it is
a dynamic, different game. Uh And and I think they
are more athletes and better players pastor players, and more
(01:10:35):
quicker players because the game now is more into quickness
and and to be able to go someplace with the ball.
As we're back then it was execution that plays, understanding
responsibilities like you know of one on one play and
isolation play and you know, and movement. You know. And
(01:10:56):
I think it's just a dynamic. I mean, today's game
is about fast, low rhythm pace. That game is about execution,
focus on defense, don't give them second possessions, low possession game.
I mean, it's a dynamic. It's it's completely different. Yeah,
I mean they look and the guys we can. People
can point out what they don't like about the new
(01:11:17):
generation of player. They are so skilled at shooting the basketball,
passing the basketball like it's really I mean, I I'm
not sure there's enough healthy respect for how skilled the
new generation is at at making shots? Is that? Is
that fair? I'm gonna disagree with you. I agree a
with you, maybe on shooting, But I don't think today's
(01:11:40):
game is a better passing game. I think they're more individualists,
and I don't know if you want to use individualists
the next stage, it's selfish. I think there are more
people searching down shots and points than being a guy
that makes other people better? And which which is what
made which was making Lebron different, I think, but it
(01:12:01):
made Bird different, It made Jordans different. I mean, obviously
Magic and Bird those they were the two. They were
the two best at making other people better, making lifting
up entire franchises go in the conversation, I don't know,
I don't know. I don't I don't know what's happened
where all of a sudden and Bird the same way?
(01:12:23):
I mean, And you tell me if I'm wrong. As
far as Bird like Larry Burton, Magic Johnson were the
two best players in the league and changed the league forever.
For a decade. They were the two best for a decade.
They were the two best. And and I know, but
you have and maybe it's because Magic, in his magic
way said Kobe is the greatest laker ever. No, he's not.
(01:12:45):
Magic was the greatest liaker ever. Right, Magic was Magic
was must see TV. He was amazing, amazing. Um and
Bird much the exact same way. Oh Magic, I mean
when Magic was on, you got no chance. I mean
he could beat you with the points, he could beat
you with his passing, he could reach you with just
(01:13:05):
the energy you brought to the game. I just don't
understand that we talked about Kobe without Magic. No, you
can't do that. Yeah, I'm I'm completely with you. I'm
glad you brought that up. I am one of the
younger generation that was taught a healthy respect for Bird
and for Magic. Thanks so much for joining us, Coach
car A real a real honor and a pleasure. Thank you, Doug.

(01:13:50):
a previous portion of a previous show on Fox Sports
Radio or Fox Sports on Don't We Call It? And
now Fox say, um, this is uh? Earlier on Fox
Sports Uh this was um. Pro Football Focus released their
list of top players from two thousand ten to two
(01:14:11):
thousand twenty. Last the decade team Rob Gronkowski ranked five.
Here's PFF analyst Sam Munson on the Herd explaining the
high ranking. I mean, the injuries and the hobbling. Those
are the things that prevented him being number one or
number two in this list. Like Rob Gronkowski, there are
a few players that had his consistent level of just
(01:14:31):
absolute peerless dominance throughout the decade. He was as good
as the best receiving tight ends in the NFL, guys
like Jimmy Graham that never blocked at all throughout the decade.
Gronk was every bit the match of those guys and
did it for longer, and then he was as good
of a blocker as guys that were on the roster
just for that role, you know, blocking specialist tight ends
(01:14:53):
who were earning a living for sixteen games going out
there and Baski playing auxiliary tackle. Gronk was as good
as those guys were just blocking. So you put those
two things together, and he was this ultimate matchup weapon
that nobody could deal with because they didn't have players
that could be good in both facets of the game.
You're right, the injuries they were, they were a problem.
(01:15:14):
They were the thing that pulled him down. But that's
what's stopping him from going down as being like literally
one of the best players to ever play in the game,
let alone a top five guy. In the decade, I've
never felt better with myself than I do right at
this very very moment. For the last many months has
been I don't even know what month, this is. The
last four or five months, UM Niner fan football guy.
(01:15:41):
UM has tried to crush me because I said George
Hill is not really a blocker. And what people have
taken that to me and is George Kittle can't or
dozen't block. That is not my point at all. The
question was asked me by Calherd about we were talking
as a discussion about Rob Gronkowski, and what sam Munson
(01:16:01):
points out is exactly how it's been described to me
by NFL gms. Look, the ten best blocking tight ends.
You have never heard their name. You don't know who
they are. They're basically slightly slimmer guys that can catch
that are They're just tackles that occasionally go out in
a pattern, but for the most part they're a uh
(01:16:21):
sixth offensive lineman. Right, Gronk was as good a blocker
as those guys. Now. Kittle as a purely a pass catcher,
has shown the desire to be a good blocker. He's
a really good block right, getting down the field and
getting on a body, and if he gets done, to
get it on the next guy. But like, you can't
(01:16:42):
leave George Kittle one on one with one of the
best defensive ends in the NFL. It's not what he does. Right. Gronk,
on the other hand, was alignment as a blocker and
then as effective as Kittle as a pass catcher. One
of the greatest ever at blocking and catching. And those
(01:17:04):
guys unicorns do I think he's a sixth best player
in the last decade. No, but what Sam Monthson is
pointing out is what I was the point, the bigger
point I was making that people get caught up in
not understanding the nuance and substance of the argument. Fox say, alright,
coming up next is Russell Wilson done in Seattle? The
(01:17:29):
answer might surprise you. It's next in The Doug Gotlip Show.
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio a app.
What Up Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Man, I
am having a glorious, fantastic, amazing day, right, but Pro
(01:17:52):
Football Focus guys had my back without knowing they're having
my back. George Carle came on. We had an amazing
discuss with him. Dalton Reisner joined us from the Broncos.
How good was that he went to seven year arm
interest only loan, the seven of your arm interest only loan?
Uh music? What are you doing that that you're getting
(01:18:14):
close to moving into the your first house? Right? And
this is getting really really kind of precariously close. Like
June is when you're supposed to close on our rights. Right,
we're about a month or so away and we did
thirty were well, we haven't technically done it yet, but
we're doing thirty year fixed. No, no, no, no, no no,
I'm gonna talk you out of this. There are certain
financial restrictions that we have in place. It doesn't matter,
(01:18:37):
you know, it just shouldn't. Then if if you can't
get a loan, uh different, you should be able to
get a different loan. We'll we'll talk about this. Do
not do a thirty year fixed as you know what.
You can't be on the show if you do a
thirty year fixed period. There you go, there you go.
I mean, listen, it's the hard decision to make or
(01:19:00):
it's not. Okay, John is the exception. John, how long
you been in your house? Nine nine? He's been in
the house twenty one years? So you're like, are you
really are you on the three year fixed? Uh? Yeah,
I think so. I think it was. Did you ever
(01:19:20):
REFI yes, yeah, I was gonna say, you're like nine
years okay, yeah, no, no, we're not. That would be amazing,
you know, house payments in nine years? My mom and dad,
I really got your Paris. But they did pay off
their house like in fifteen years and they were done.
There have they they own their houses like nineteen eight
years we built, we we moved in in eighty one,
their houses paid off, although they had a second that
(01:19:43):
since paid off or whatever. But I mean back then,
interest rates for like crazy crazy, We're crazy crazy. You're like, oh,
we paid like interest. It was a good rate at
the time. Like what you did? What buyer? How long
have you lived in your house? You haven't eve been
married three years? Now you celebrate your third anniversary three
years and now, uh, your previous domicile, how how long
did you live there? Of? About four years? That's about right.
(01:20:07):
Most people live in a place about you know, three
to five years, which is why you never do a
thirty year faxed, especially when you have no kids yet.
You're gonna have kids, so you're gonna move to a
different house eventually. Come on, music, Come on man, come on,
hold onto some of that cash. Hey put as little
down as possible and you'll get a great interest rate
(01:20:29):
in like a seven year adjust At the end of
seven years, it's adjustable to whatever you can refin in
the next seven years. And every time the rights will
never be lower, you know, any times. If rates level
level lower every year except for like one year, for
the last fifteen years, doesn't mean you're gonna be like
me or we've lived in two, three, four, five, six, seven,
(01:21:00):
eight houses in the last fifteen years. Okay, but somewhere
in between Ramos and Gottlieb is the likely destination for you. Anyway.
We had this amazing conversation with Dalton Reisner, offensive lineman
with the Denver Broncos. We talked about it moving into
his first house, about him doing honey duds, he wants
a pool. It's great stuff. You can download that in
(01:21:22):
the Doug Otlic Show podcast. Take it with you whever
you you want. You'd be like, I don't. I've never
heard of this guy. I love this guy. I saw
this story. Chris Sims, who's a friend and uh he
also joins us on radio, works for Pro Football, Pro Foot,
Pro Football Talk. I was were just profile focus now
(01:21:44):
it's Pro Football Talk. Sorry, you know, like you know,
your brain kind of gets scrambled. Yeah. Um. He said
on Pro Football Talk over time that the Browns and
the Seahawks discussed the possibility of trading Russell Wilson for
at least the number one overall. Let's go back two
years ago. This is the Baker Mayfield pick. Mike Florio,
(01:22:04):
who hosts Pro Football Talk, added that some who are
close enough to the situation know what may have happened
and believe that Wilson eventually will be traded intriguing potential destinations,
including our view, the Cowboys, the Raiders, the Saints. Right,
it's it's a poorly kept secret that Russell Wilson would
(01:22:25):
like to be in a bigger and better market and
maybe closer to where his wife can work. I don't
think this is anti Seattle in terms of how good
a market it is. It's anti Seattle in terms of
it just have you ever been to Seattle. I love Seattle,
not like love would live there in a heartbeat. From
(01:22:47):
the first time I was there, which was twelve and
under a U National Championships at Bellevue, Washington, up until
any time I've been there recently, I'm like, man, all
this water fish. I actually dig rain. It's beautiful and
clean in the summer. I just love it. But but
it's like it kind of feels like the end of
the Earth. It feels it feels like you're in Canada.
(01:23:10):
It just does. There's a disconnect from the rest of
the United States, which is good for living there. But
when your wife is a superstar, you know, a performer,
and you have your own brand, it's sometimes hard to
convince guys that that's where they want to be. Um
this is and I would guess that there's a lot
of Look, the reason that Tom Brady, I believe a
(01:23:33):
good portion of the reason his relationship with the Patriots,
with Josh mcdana's why changed is Gisel. He even admitted it. Right.
Do you remember the interview with Howard Stern where he said, like,
I had to check myself. She wrote me this letter.
I keep the letter talking about me not holding up
my end of the bargain. Why is that? Well? And
(01:23:55):
all the sudden, all of a sudden, now twenty years
in you want to have fun playing football, and we
were having all this fun kicking everybody's ass last twenty years.
What do who do you think the who's the Yoko
in this? Duh? It's gizl Why she's a supermodel, she's
the most famous supermodel of our lifetime. First, she's a
strong personality, she's a strong woman. She knows what she wants.
(01:24:16):
She wants to work Boston k cold right, She's she's Brazilian,
like the idea that somebody Brazilian would be like, you
know what, let's sign up for another year of the cold,
or we go live my we can live in Florida.
She want to live in Miami, which makes no football sense,
(01:24:37):
but they considered it. Right. He wanted to play for
the Chargers, but it was too far from uh his
other kid who's in New York, and Miami was a
better fit. So they took They took Tampa. The reality is,
when you're married, or even if you're divorced, there's there's
(01:24:58):
other reasons outside of the work you have, you want
to make a decision on where you live. And you
may think yourself, well, it's the offseason, you don't That's
that sports has changed now. Guys are around the facility
all year long. You know. Yeah, some of them come
out to l A or they go home to Texas
to train or whatever. But you have O T A s,
you have camp generally around that that's where you're gonna be.
(01:25:22):
That's where you're gonna set up shop. And it's reasonable
think that look, he wants there's a guy who likes
the little promotion. He likes corporate America. That's why the
Cowboys make sense. Vegas makes sense, so she can be
a performer. New York makes sense. L A makes sense.
I think New Orleans is the type of team that
might make sense to Florio because they don't believe in
(01:25:44):
Taysom Hill and obviously would link you up to Sean Payton.
I don't think that makes sense to Russell Wilson. He'll
want a big market. He'll want to market where his
wife can work and be happy and he can play
football in a bright, hot spotlight. My guests would be
he wants l A. He'd really like l A. But
(01:26:04):
right now they got golf and it's the same division,
and the Chargers just drafted a guy, so that might
not be a possibility. Raiders, Okay, in one year they're
out of the Derek Carr thing. It's not trading in division.
Although Seahawks and Raiders that used to be a really
good rivalry. If for those of us old enough to remember,
I do feel like his days are numbered. And I
(01:26:25):
also feel like this kind of goes hand in hand
with why a lot of NFL guys don't dig Russell Wilson.
It doesn't mean he's a bad guy, but he is
not the guy who you perceive him to be. The
awe gez shucks. I just love Seattle and the twelve
and I'm all in go Hawks. You would see all
(01:26:48):
of this if there, You would hear all of this chatter,
and I think Richard Sherman pointed it out. Look, Richard
Sherman and Aaron Rodgers are two dudes who you probably
disagree with a good portion of how they have acted
at times and their opinions. But you know what those
opinions and how they act are real. That's who they are,
(01:27:10):
and they put it out there and they don't hide
from it. This is who I am, this is what
I think, and I'm a good enough player where you can.
You're gonna have to deal with it. And you know what,
everybody agrees. They're both first ballot Hall of famers and
both of them. I don't like Russell Wilson, and I
know Richard Sherman shook his hand and they kind of
made kiss him, made up um earlier this year. There's
(01:27:33):
some respect there, but they don't like it. They don't
like him, and they don't like him because Russell is
not what he appears to be, you know, in their
eyes as guys who keep it real, they don't think
he does. And I would guess that this story is
much part of that. Right, he's not all in. He
(01:27:56):
kind of wants out his and I don't necessarily think
he's a diva, but he definitely has a way in
which others in the locker room aren't all in on Russell,
and so it does feel like it's a it's a
relationship that at some point, at some point we'll come
to an end, you know, just like all the other quarterbacks,
(01:28:18):
but more so I think even than Aaron Rodgers. You do,
because Rogers he's dating a superstar, right obviously she's not
racing anymore. But I don't think Rogers, you know, I don't.
He lives in l A in the off season. I
don't think he necessarily wants to play anywhere other than
(01:28:39):
Green Bay. Probably why he's upset over the draft pick
more than anything, not because he thinks he'll be replaced,
but because he wants to win in Green Bay before
he retires and then come working probably in TV would
be great. I all right, coming up next, Um, I
have some advice for Blake Snow very simple. It's next.

gott Leap Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app.
Have you guys ever heard the term forced massouri and
by Forest Massa don't don't look it up music you want?
A forced massouri is well only because we had several
(01:29:24):
contracts we had to sign for our wedding before all
this thing went down. But um so not until the
pandemic hit, right? Do you know what forced? What? Can you? Could? You?
Could you explain what a forced massouri clause in a
contract is. Yeah, it's sort of supposed to be, I
guess in no, in certain terms, an act of God.
So when you agree to a contract, they're supposed to
be like any other contract in exchange of money for
(01:29:46):
goods or services. But then that's all set upon if
there is some type of event or anything that could
happen that is out of both parties control, that would
then prevent that event from happening. It basically avoids the
contracts so that way both parties are absolved of any
sort of responsibility that has been agreed to. Uh buy,
(01:30:06):
are were you familiar with forced major Yeah? Only just
because of the NBA's Okay, so forced massr I is
in any given situation, is controlled by the law of
governing the contract. Rather than the general concepts force major I.
It's the you know, irresistible force or unforeseen event beyond
the control of a state making it materially impossible to
(01:30:28):
fill an obligation. Now, look, this is this is a
probably a much higher level discussion than even I'm educated
enough to to bring to sports radio. But it's basically
the biggest discussion that most people who have a contract
(01:30:49):
of any sort are having discussions with their boss or
the other executor of the contract with force massuri is
a clause? Is that if it exists in your contract,
we can just we can just well, Yo, you can't
avoid a contract? Yes, I can. Why force MAJORA in
(01:31:11):
other words, act of god? Coronavirus quarantine pandemic? Is that
an act of God? Again, welcome to California court or
state of whatever court for the next you know, next year.
Trying to decide which of these contracts which people tried
(01:31:34):
to avoid had a forced Massuri clause which applied to
said contract. But when I listened to Blake Snell's rant,
I'm not upset. I'm not mad. I fully understand. Like, look,
anytime somebody says, like heymund that money you're gonna make,
you're gonna make less. But I thought it was a
guaranteed contract. Yo. Yeah, that's like when games are actually
(01:31:59):
being played and they go like Blake forced major. I
He's like because in type right, because in type here's
Blake Snell picture Tip Bay Rage ranting on social media.
If I'm gonna play, I should we get the money
(01:32:20):
I signed to be getting paid. I should not begin
half of what I'm getting paid because the season is
cut in half on top of a thirty three percent
cut of the half that's already there. On top of
that is getting taxed. So imagine how much I'm actually
making to play, you know what I'm saying. And on
top of that, so all that money's gone, and now
I play risk in my life And what if I
(01:32:41):
get the rona on top of half, I get the rona,
guess what happens with that? Oh yeah, that's stay that's
in my body forever. That damage is not gonna be
like the damage that was done in my body, that's
gonna be there forever. Yeah, listen, Um, last spring he
signed a five year, fifty million dollar contract and he's like, man,
I'm good, right. I mean, this is a guy who
this is his second professional contract that he signed. He
(01:33:04):
wasn't making. You know, last year he only made a
million in bass salary plus six D grade. He made
one point six last year. That's it. And he's a
very good picture. Actually one cy Young award two years ago.
UM in the American League. This year he was set.
He was set to make uh seven point six million
dollars and then active God no baseball, Like, hey man,
(01:33:29):
you gotta take a pay cut. I don't want to
take a pay cut. I've been working my entire professional life.
He's twenty seven years old. This is his first big payday.
I don't blame him for being ticked. I remember when
Blake Style won the Cy Young. He was under his
initial contract, he was making less than a million dollars
a year. Finally gets paid. Doesn't really hit until this
(01:33:52):
year and now like, yeah, we're gonna have to take
back some of that money. And he, like most Americans, like, Yo,
whoa hold on, man, I earned this contract, And he's right.
He wasn't gonna earn this contract based upon his pitching
this year. It's everything he's done up until this point
and what he would do this year. Right, Blake, there's
(01:34:14):
something called forced major I Act of God. They can
avoid the entire contract. They'll have to fight you and
fight the m l b p A and in many
ways like you're actually you're gonna be okay, Like if
I'm blake, have you have you looked at the details
of his deal? Next year he's making eleven million, The
(01:34:34):
following year, he's making thirteen, the following year he's making sixteen,
and he'll still only be thirty years old. This is
not his last contract. He's left handed, he's a stud pitcher.
He's gonna be fine. He's not wrong for feeling the
way he's feeling. It just lacks perspective and understanding. And
(01:34:55):
if you think you got it bad, I give you
two words to look up and spend some time time
understanding forced Massuri. The nice thing to do is to
take back some money because there's no games being played,
and even if you come back and play, there's no
fans in the stands. There's a limited amount of advertising.
The sport all of America is in fact struggling. It
(01:35:17):
doesn't mean you don't have to speak on it, okay,
doesn't mean that you're wrong for saying, Wait, I'm I'm
struggling with should I go back to work because if
I get the runable to effect my entire professional career,
if I contracted, will that be used against me in
a contract negotiation. These are all reasonable things to talk about,
but you have to be reasonable and understand that a
(01:35:39):
forced Masuri clause could void the same contract that you have.
I think baseball eventually will be fine. I think so,
So take the laws now. Probably, don't talk about your
money because there's thirty six million people who are collecting
(01:36:01):
zero employment checks zero and be happy that Major League
Baseball in the m l p p A to this
point haven't executed a forced Majuri clause in your contract.
Because brighter times are, without any question on the way
for the star pitcher for the Tampa Bay Res. Be
sure to catch the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb
(01:36:23):
Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific. Brandon
Wade joins us in the Doug Gotleap Show on Fox
Sports Radio brand. We've We've had a wide ranging number
of questions, so I'm gonna I'm gonna go back a
little bit. Um, are you a thirty year fixed guy
on your when you buy your houses? That's a good question,
(01:36:44):
you know, I actually just wait, hold on, wait on,
hold on, you said you just and then we lost
your first second quick cut out. You just go ahead, oh,
I said, I just looked into possibly read finance in
the house, and uh, basically you know where we're at. Uh,
the way our mortgage was set up, it really didn't
(01:37:05):
make sense. We just kind of kept it was. I
think it's a thirty year fixed. Note though, are you
gonna stay in that house for thirty years? No? Now,
I'm assuming just with raps and the way they were
when I bought the house. I bought the house, yes,
three years ago, so I'm assuming at the time it
was the best deal. I don't know, know, I mean, hey, man,
I don't keep anything very long. I know. I'm the
(01:37:26):
guy that switched cars every couple of years. And um,
if you ask my wife, we're never moving, so we
may be their thirty years. Who knows. Yeah, you're you're
not gonna be there thirty years, which is why I
would never I'm advising people to never do a thirty
year note h Dalton right. Risener. Reisener joined us earlier
offensive line with the Broncos. He did us He did
a seven and one interest only and I was like, man,
(01:37:46):
whoever told you do that kissed them on the mouth,
because that that's some really, really really good advice. Um,
you're you're smarter than the rest of us. I, like
I said, I just kind of left that up to
my financial advisor whatever he wanted to do. Uh. I
trusted him, and uh so here we are, okay, fair fair,
fair enough, okay. One other favorite potato chip is what
(01:38:09):
oh man, Miss Vicky Salto vinegar a pretty hard to beat. Um, yeah,
those are good. Miss Dickey's. By the way, guys, Miss
Vicky's is the one that I was trying to tell
you guys. It's really free do lay right. They It
makes it look like it's some small mom and pop shop,
and I think it used to be, but it's bought
by feel. They are very good though, they really are good.
(01:38:29):
I mean, man, if I had to give one thing up,
I would need to give up chips. Man, I'm a
chip I love chips and dips. I'm not really I've
got so many. But I mean, if I were to
have like a sandwich or like a burger or something,
I would say Miss Vicky Sweet would be my first choice.
And now my personal suggestion to be put the chips
inside the sandwich. And now you have, now you have,
(01:38:50):
Now you have a big time win. Now we're talking
at crunching there. It's got a little crunch, little salt,
little pepper, little oil, grease in there. Now we're talking right.
Eaton joined us on the Doug Outlet Show on Fox
Sports Radio. All right, So the story Chris Simms has
out there, and the story was that a couple of
two years ago, getting ready for the draft, the Browns
and the Seahawks talked about the possibility of a trade.
(01:39:12):
The Seahawks would trade Russell Wilson for the number one
overall pick and some other stuff. Uh. Look, it's it's
been a poorly kept secret that Russell Wilson and his
wife Sara would love to be in a bigger maybe
a market where she could work. What do you think
the possibility of Russell Wilson not ending his career in Seattle.
(01:39:36):
Uh you know that, I mean because of who's married to.
I mean, yeah, I can see that. And you know,
Russell's built this brand, you know, I mean, he's kind
of built this deal and he's he's want to do
things outside of football. So I think, you know, I
don't know if Cleveland, if you're referring to Cleveland, is
a bigger market. I don't see it as one of them.
But yeah, you know, in New York, in l a
or you know, my aim or not Miami now, you know,
(01:39:57):
just there's other markets out there that I think that
would probably be a feeling to him. But uh, from
a football standpoint, I mean, he's got a pretty good gig.
He's making, you know a lot of money, and you know,
they like they love him up there and these you know,
want of super Bowl in those things. So I mean, yeah,
it makes sense, do I you know, at the end
of his career, because I see it happening. Yeah, but
I don't I don't see it happening for in the
(01:40:18):
in the near future anyway, because I just think that uh,
you know, they they would be I mean a first rounder.
I'm maybe all kinds of stuff that the Seahawks had
to get for him. Brenda Wait joining us in the
Doug gotlif Show on Fox Sport Trader. If you were
going to write a handbook, Okay, hey man, I've lived
your life before. Here's the five things you should do
(01:40:39):
when you're a rookie quarterback. Now, Grant, it's different now
because there's no O T A s. It's different now
because to this point you can't be at the facility.
But let's say you're gonna write a handbook and you're
gonna say this is what you should do when you
come into the culture of the NFL, into being a
first round draft pick. What would what would the five
things be? Especially early on, I would eliminate social media.
(01:41:02):
Get that out of there, um, you know, because you're
never gonna please everybody. You're always gonna have people, you know,
just the way it is social media is you know,
it's turned into what it is. Uh, it's great. I
mean it can be used for pausitive, but I think
you know, there's there's a lot of trolls out there,
and then um, you know, I think again, just dive
into what you're doing, you know, and I think you know.
It's back up on that. I think, you know, get
(01:41:24):
to know not only your teammates, you get to know
everybody in the building, you know. I mean you know,
not just the equipment guys, not this trainers. You know,
get to know some of the you know, the the
security of the UH secretary, ladies that are in the
front office. Get to know everybody in the organization. Gets
no understand because I mean you're around them seven days
a week pretty much three sixty five now, and so
you know, you want to know who you're working with.
(01:41:44):
You want to and it's hard as the young player
because you're you're so worried about the playbook. I mean,
so I think just to get get to know everybody
in the in the organization, um, you know, do do
all the things. You know, really just keep your mouth shut,
keep your head down, and get to work. I mean
that would have to be because you know, veteran players
don't care if you're a first round pick or you're
an undrafted free agent. They don't care. Once you're there, man,
(01:42:06):
everybody's there to win, win a championship and win games.
So if you're a you know, a first rounder, you
know everybody knows what you know, what that what comes
with that? Um? But just put your head down and
get to work. Um yeah, you got you got. Eliminate
social media, dive into the playbook, get to know everyone
in the building, keep your mouth shut. What's the last one?
I think the last and most important in my opinion,
(01:42:29):
would be be vocal about what you like offensively, what
you're running. You know, as far as the game playing goes,
if there's there, if there's plays this particularly pass plays
run run plays, doesn't really matter pass plays. If there's
pass plays you don't like or do like, be vocal
about it. You know, have that conversation with dolphinsive coordinator,
because I think sometimes as a young player, you can
(01:42:49):
kind of falling this deal where you're just kind of
you're running the plays that they call and you don't
really have a whole lot of input. You're kind of
scared to voys, you know, use your voice to to
speak up. And I think I caught I got caught
in that. I mean I just I just kind of
ran what we did. I mean, that system didn't really
fit me very well. But at the same time, I
didn't really say, hey man, can we do this from
the shotgun, Can we do this out of this protection,
(01:43:10):
Can we do this out of this formation? Or hey,
can we put Josh Gordon over here instead of over
you know? And it's just just little things. Most nine
the coaches are gonna want to agree with you. But
I think be vocal about what you like offensively, and
then the things you more importantly, the things you don't like,
because at the end of the day, man, you're the
one back there getting hit in the chin. You're the
one back there that you know is asked to get
(01:43:33):
it done. And if you're not getting done, and it's
all on you anyway, So you might as well go
out and run the plays you like. And um, I
would have to assume the plays you like are getting
more successful than the plays that you don't like. So
that seems simple, but I think a lot of young
players are are afraid to speak up. I'm watching Dan
Marino right now in the NFL network. I'm wondering as
a former quarterback, you know, people talk about Brady being
(01:43:54):
the goat. Um he's obviously the most successful as a
former NFL quarterback, Who's the guy that you most admire
in terms of the ability to play a position? Um,
Aaron Rodgers, what he does throwing the football, it's I've
never seen anything like it. Uh. I've seen them throw
it in August, perfect weather and it's I mean, it's
(01:44:16):
just I don't know if there's anything ever everybody's football
like that dude does. Um, I've seen him throw it
in twenty three weather and snow and still it's the same.
I mean, he's he's the most one of the most
talented that I've ever seen, you know. I mean, you
know there's guys, you know, they're a little bit older
that obviously have been able to spending you know, warm moon.
All these guys could really spin it. Mean, Marino could
(01:44:36):
could rip it. Um. There, there's a bunch of them.
But me personally, with the guys that I've seen playing
the last ten, twelve, fifteen years, I mean, Rogers is
is as good kind of wise as as you're gonna find.
He can spend it, he can spend it, he can move,
he can change arm angles. You know, he has creativity,
he's anticipatory, he's tough to play their injuries, you said,
(01:44:59):
playing the cold. He's he's a He's an amazing, amazing
football player. Have you watched all of the last Dance
documentary I have. I've seen them all twice. Uh, incredible,
I mean, the best sports documentary I've ever seen. I
was a huge Jordan fan growing up, and you know,
he made the comment, I don't some people not like
me after this, and I'm I'm sitting there scratching my head, like,
how do you not like this guy more? I mean,
(01:45:20):
he's just he's a goat man. It's it's fun. I've watched,
like I said, I've watched each one twice, and um,
I look forward to Sunday nights there they're must watch TV. Yeah,
after this Sunday, we're gonna to find something something else's
sports fans to sit around and watch until sports comes back. Um,
what's your take on pipping? I think I think a
lot of people forgot I did not forget a lot
(01:45:41):
of people forgot about pipping. Uh not playing, I mean,
not not coming into the game. When Coo Coach made
the shot, they kind of brushed off the pipping with
the Migraine. Game seven against the Pistons was a huge,
huge thing, But I the bigger deal was like, look,
you're you're almost twenty five years later and actually more
than five years later and Pippin said he'd do it again.
(01:46:04):
He would he would sit out of the last play again.
I was stunned by that. Yeah, me too. I don't
remember him taking himself out. I do remember the buying
rain deal, but I do not remember him taking himself
out of the game. And when he said that he
would do it, you know, if if he had to
do it all over again, I was shocked. I mean,
you know, I know you won't be politically correct all
the time, but you know, that's one thing that you know,
(01:46:27):
there's not there's no way, there's not a piece of
him that that regrets that. I mean, you know, he's
fortunate a lot of people forgot about it, but you know,
until until until now. Yeah, everybody in the world knows
about it now. But I don't. I don't remember the
contract deal. I don't remember him, you know, making far
less money than he should have been, the whole deal.
I don't remember any of that. Well, Well, here's what people,
here's what. Like again, there's not that much context in it.
(01:46:49):
Like Magic Johnson signed a twenty five million t year
twenty five million dollar deal, Michael Jordan's signed a long
term I think was like a like a six like
an eight year, eighteen million in dollar deal, and then
the last two years he made thirty He made sixties
six million over the last two years. That was like
a it was like a balloon payment sort of thing.
(01:47:09):
But those a different contract like that was that was
what guys did. They come in. They'd signed some crazy
long term guaranteed deal for a couple many year and
at the start of it, started it, they were the
highest paid guys in the league. At the end of it,
they were not, and they did it for long term
security and the numbers were just far different. So I like,
I get it, but I also think that there was
there was some logic into why there wasn't as much
(01:47:31):
goodwill as you would normally have around a player that
great and that successful late uh late in his his
his career. Um more excited to see the game the
last game that he played in a Bull's uniform, or
the Flu Game the year before in this last Weekend's
two episodes, probably the Flu game. I mean, you know,
(01:47:53):
I remember very vividly his last game, you know, the
Flu Game, and I remember it, but not maybe it
as well. Uh but I kind of want to hear
everything led up to the you know them talking about
how you know he was sick how much because he
probably wouldn't around the team, mus he probably didn't practice,
didn't do a lot of things. I'm just kind of
I'm axesting behind the scenes how it all took place
and how it all went down. But the flu game
(01:48:14):
was special. Um, a lot of those games. I mean,
you you watch him, it's just like the guy just
it was unbelievable. I mean, we could talk about this
for hours because I mean some of the stuff you said,
I mean just he's, uh, I don't know if there's
ever been a more competitive dude than that. And he's
you know, love him or hate him if you're a teammate.
But I can guarantee all those guys on his team
appreciate him. And obviously for the championships. But um, I
(01:48:35):
mean he was greatness and and he made the guys
around him better. It's just it's an unbelievable documentary. Some
of those guys, for me, you know, the coup coaches
and those guys that you kind of forget about, but um,
I mean they're pretty intricol parts of what they did
to win a couple of championships. Can you be that
way as an NFL quarterback? Because look, you Befeve played
behind Romo who Romo is? Like? Romo is the best, right,
I mean he's funny, he takes over room and he
(01:48:58):
played behind the Shawan which dudes love love to Shawn
as well. Great big personalities, Uh egos, but not like
not not Jordan's and neither are Michael Jordan. Matter what
Dabbo Sweeney says, Can you can you be that way
as an NFL quarterback? It's hard, it'd be hard. Um well,
when you got you know, you know, different personality, what's
(01:49:19):
doing basketball too? But you've got more guys. Um no,
it's if you're Tom Brady and you've won six super Bowls.
I mean, yeah, you can be you can have a
little bit of that in you. I just think a
quarterback is kind of it's kind of understood that quarterbacks
supposed to be a little more even killed when more
you know, de mean there's gonna be a little bit different. Um,
but you got I mean you got guys. You know
(01:49:40):
there's there's guys that push those guys. I guarantee you Brady.
There's times were some players look at Tom Brady back man,
he's kind of a cricket practice today, you know, just
because guys aren't doing the way he wants and that's
he's earned that, you know. Um, but I just don't think,
you know, I just it's just different, you know. I
mean times, times have changed. I think overall, just just
players are or wired and built a little difference than

they were backed in. And um, you know, again it
was understood he was, he was the best in everybody's
took for what it was. Maybe this is this is
an Aaron Rodgers discussion that he calls guys out, he
drives them, he wants them to be better, and it's
interesting we perceive it differently than we perceived Jordan, even
watching him twenty years later in the doc. Brandon, continue

Devil's always in the details. So next Starry, next year,
Wilson is gonna make the basketball for the NBA. Did
you guys see this that it's going to be the
exact same leather, exact same leather provider, like exactly Like
(01:51:05):
all they're gonna basically do is make the same balls,
just put a Wilson stamp on it. I mean, I
don't I get it, and I understand it. And NBA
guys are they love that they're specific basketballs. But yeah,
that one's interesting. I wish they would be able to
put their own signature on it. Let's get to the press,
the press, Dan buyer, what I don't know what that
(01:51:28):
means from my indoor slash outdoor Spalding ball that I
bought just a couple of months ago. Indoor outdoor means outdoor.
Just see you where I know. I'm just reading the
the the right the old basketball. Although when you get
those leather ones, and you play them outside, they get
scuffed up even better. Grip on him at times something
(01:51:49):
Huh the when all the plastic uh is marked off
because you played it on blacktop and yeah, just is
kind of out that rough cardboard of field. Well, if
it's indoor outdoor, yes, but in true indoor balls, if
you play them outdoors, they're not better events. I mean,
I just like, I don't know, I'm talking to a
(01:52:11):
marksman over here. You can the Canada. Yeah, anyway, I
got into it. I got never forget. I got an
argument one with Seth Davis. We're talking about the Spalding
has tried to make synthetic a synthetic ball, like Wilson
makes the best synthetic moisture absorbing basketball. It's called a solution.
They made the best. They came out when I was
in college. They had him try it, and I wouldn't
use it because they wore down really quickly, and they
(01:52:33):
got bad when they got worn down because they absorbed
too much, like all the dirt whatever. After some reworking
of it, it's what they used the NS tournament. It's phenomenal. Anyway,
I got this argument with Steth Davis once and I
was just like, look, I know that's a bad batch
of basketballs, and sure enough, Spalding change. They're kind of formula.
I'm a I'm a bath. It's one of the few
things in life that I know way too much about
(01:52:54):
and I'm kind of annoying about. So I apologize. I'm annoying.
I apologize. Bow Ryan have like this basketball deal he did,
and because they provided it to him at Platteville or
even before that. Yes, he talked about in he talked
about it in our podcast. Um there no Macasas were
good balls back in the day that nobody uses. Uh,
(01:53:15):
the the kind of basketball all real quick? Uh? What
what was it called? Brand? Is Sterling? Sterling Sterling literally
the only school in America that used Sterling. NASCAR announced
it will continue racing each weekend through Sunday, June one,
without fans at events in Bristol, Atlanta, Martinsville Homestead in Talladega.
(01:53:36):
Could be the only guy, but I'm kind of excited. Yeah,
I used to love NASCAR as a kid. I used
to used to used to love it. I can't tell
you the last time I watched more than two or
three laps of a race, and I know that they're great.
I just I've lost my love and feeling. Acarn Beacon
Journal says that Brown's quarterback Baker Mayfield has invited his
(01:53:57):
fellow teammates, who are wide receivers in tight ends, to
work out and take part in team building exercises in
his hometown of Austin, Texas. Okay, so, um, this is
an honest question. If you invite your teammates down, are
you providing them transportation? And are you putting them up
at the house as well? I think translatation, yes, I
(01:54:20):
would say lodging. It's gotta be Oh, yes, I suppose,
although Austin. I think Austin things are. Yeah. I don't like. Look,
you invite guys down, you kind of gotta pay for
him or you gotta put them up. I think putting
him up more so than transportation, honestly. Former former Steelers
linebacker James Harrison told the Going Deep podcast that Steelers
(01:54:42):
said coach Mike Tomlin quote handed him an envelope end quote,
after Harrison was fined seventy thousand dollars for a hit
in a game against the Cleveland Browns, of course, implying
that Tomlin aided in the paying off of the fine. Wait,
why are you? Why are your stitching? Why are your stitching?
You're gonna end up getting Mike Tomlin fine over this deal.
(01:55:04):
Like that's the awesome. That's why dudes love Mike Tomlin love. Yeah,
called I think like the ultimate g move, he said.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman says, I'll feel that Aaron Judge
is still recovering from his rib injury and won't be
ready to play until and this is a quote, summertime
narrows at down. How could not be healthy? I don't know.
(01:55:25):
This has been a long time, long time. The University
of Acron has eliminated to their men's cross country and
golf teams and the women's tennis team, saving the school
about four point four million dollars. They are so so
the tennis team is not gonna win Zip, and the
Socker wins Zip. The Akron zips terrible. I apologize, that's
(01:55:49):
all right. New golf game coming out in Video Game
World in August. Justin Thomas has been chosen to grace
the cover of the PGA Tour two K twenty one.
Oh that's gonna make people just run out and get
it all the Tiger Woods Golfs, like, just who's that guy?
Who's who's the white guy in the cover? Oh, well
(01:56:09):
the golf game Fowler on there. Well, they had Rory
on there and it didn't sell. So you need that
Tiger Brandon Bae out there and pressed. That was the press.
Who's the guy who goes like? What about Justin Thomas?
He's awesome? Right? You know? Why did the big at
least like Adam Day, at least the women think he's
(01:56:30):
hot like Adam Scott, Adam Scott, Jason Day, both of
them combined. I mushed him together. That's what I did.
I mushed. I mushed, We're gonna get you ready for
the Flu game and the last last dance tomorrow on
