Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's eight oh five here at news Radio eight forty
whas Coffee and Company with you, and we are fueled
by Thornton's. Keep Thornton's in mind. They've got what you
need to stay fueled for the day ahead. When it
comes to breakfast options, they've got plenty many donuts to
choose from breakfast sandwiches. Obviously, I always stick with the sausage,
egg and cheese croissant. I don't think you'll find a
(00:20):
better breakfast sandwich. But that's just my opinion, and if
you disagree with that, you're wrong, because it is that good.
But they also have the breakfast tacos with charizos, so again,
a lot of good options there. I give them a
lot of credit. I think they are widely responsible for
the stigma that has changed with gas station and convenience
store food. It's become a different world compared to what
(00:43):
it used to be. It used to be I believe
what most would describe as food that you would never have,
you would never eat unless you had to. And now
you find yourself wanting that for lunch, and wanting that
for breakfast or maybe even dinner or just whenever, because
that's how good the food is at Thornton's. They've got
folks who aren't just taking pre made food and sitting
in under a heat lamp. They're there creating fresh, high
(01:05):
quality food every day and they're always throwing out different
items to choose from different options. So again, check them
out if you haven't, and become a member if you
haven't yet. Of the Refreshing Awards program at Thornton. You'll
save money every time you're at the gas pump and
you can also qualify to save up to twenty cents
off per gallon once per week. So again, Refreshing Awards
dot com download the app. We are fueled by Thornton.
(01:27):
So here is what we know as of right now.
We know that there are a total of twelve people
that have lost their lives in the plane crash that
took place, and really the crash as you know, caused it,
but there's many that we will find out lost their
lives that we're just near and if they're unaccounted for
(01:48):
as of right now, that's certainly a very very very
troubling sign. And I can't imagine being one of those
family members or loved ones or friends know that since
this took place you've you've yet to hear from somebody
that you know or just believe might have been in
that area. And we're starting to hear more about those
that are unaccounted for. We're starting to hear more about
(02:11):
those that were that were injured and fighting for their lives.
And one of the things that I hate to say
that I'm eager and can't wait to see this because
overall this situation is tragic and it's going to leave
an impact on this city forever. I believe. Again that
may sound like recency bias, but I believe that just
(02:33):
because of we don't even know the total number of
people who will be victims and have lost their lives
in this situation. But I just think the the element
of UPS and what a UPS is to Louisville, all
the other areas, I'm sorry, all the other businesses in
that area that are just right nearby, that that thousands
(02:56):
of people in this city over the years, maybe currently,
maybe previously either they worked there at Ford or UPS,
or they know somebody that did. And it's just that
that's a part of this that I believe makes it
a little bit different as far as just folks more
so realizing, Wow, that could have been somebody I know,
that could have been somebody that that I love. But
(03:17):
back to what I was mentioning. As far as the
the the the aftermath, we'll eventually see body cam footage
from officers. I'm sure that show them rescuing some people.
So the manager of the Kentucky Truck Parts and Services
that's on Great Lane there, he and a coworker were
trapped by walls of fire for two hours. So two
(03:40):
hours they're sitting there unable to get out. They can
see what has happened, and I mean, just the what
you'd be going through mentally that in that situation is
just I can't imagine. So he has security camera footage
that captured the plane crash. It's one of the clips
(04:01):
you've probably seen on the news coverage. But the in
the the the the engine falling off and detaching during takeoff,
and there's now different angles to see just really the
what actually happened. Right again, the investigation is going to
tell us so much more. But not a surprise that
the NTSB when they are they they now know, I
(04:21):
guess what happened. Now they got to figure out how
it happened, what caused it. So this this manager of
the Kentucky Truck Parts and Services, I mean, he described
it as a bomb when talking to the folks at
w d RB. Windows shattering, the building shaking, the heat
(04:42):
being unbearable, just because again you saw the fire. Think
about how close this, this, this guy and his coworker
were to this situation. So again, the the I believe
it was cops that arrived that that showed up to
use bul cutters to get them out of where they
were trapped. So his life was saved by those running
(05:05):
into a situation he was trying to get out of. Again,
one of the countless but needed reminders that we should
appreciate those that that's their job. They're running into things
we're running away from for the fear of just losing
our lives, and yet they run in and we should
always appreciate those that do that. And I'd like to
(05:28):
think that there is a lot of there's a great
appreciation in society for what they do. But man, this
is one of those things that will really really remind
you that those that do sign up for this and
this is what they do. I mean, God bless them,
because I mean, not only can I know how to
imagine being a victim in this situation, being somebody that
was trapped, that was rescued. I can't imagine knowing that, Hey,
(05:49):
when I get up every day, this could be me
that has to go in there and try to save
people's lives and that risk could cost me my life.
So here's a quote from the from the the manager
of the of the business. We found the We found
this path between the electric station. I see the gates,
there was a little creek, and cops was on the
(06:10):
other side. So we were waving the phones with flashes, whistling, yelling,
trying to get their attentions. So they came back. I
told them they're gonna have to use bolt cutters, so
they cut the gate lock and that's how we got out.
So I don't know if if they'll be body came
footage of that, but if it was law enforcement officers,
was a good chance there was footage of that. And
this is where it sounds sick and twisted to an extent,
(06:32):
but seeing that visual will be so chilling of two
people who assumed that their life was over and they
were gonna they were going to die, only to then
have heroes that run in to save people in this situation,
keep them alive. I mean, it's it's it's heavy, and
(06:54):
this is this is something that that I can relate
to to an extent. But he told WDRB that his
phone filled with calls from his children, loved ones and
people just asking him, you know, how he is, and
just worried about him and so thankful that he's okay.
But here's a quote. Everybody talks about my emotions. No,
there are people who are dead. I'm alive. I've been
(07:16):
in that situation, meaning I was where two people got
shot and killed within a few feet of me, and
I had an overwhelming amount of people that knew that
situation for me that just wanted to ask about me
and check on me and this and that, and it
was such a weird feeling that I've never experienced before.
Is what do you mean I'm alive. I'm talking to you.
(07:39):
Two people for no rahm or reason are dead and
that could have easily been me. But I'm alive. This
doesn't sit well with me. I'm happy, I'm thankful, thank
you so much, But make this make sense. How could
we all be, you know, together and just enjoying dinner
with our family, and then all of a sudden, out
(07:59):
of nowhere, two people are dead. It's just it's so
I get where, I get what he's saying, and everybody
deals with things differently, so maybe his situation will be different.
But that that for me, that messed me up in
a way that I didn't I didn't realize until I had,
I had real issues that I that I didn't know.
I didn't know why I had. I had no clue
(08:21):
why I had issues. And yet, you know, through therapy
and talking to people, including a conversation with our mayor,
who had I mean, somebody tried to kill him and
and they were unsuccessful in doing so. But you know,
you feel, you feel grateful to be alive, but you
also really can't you know, you wonder and question why
(08:41):
why was I spared? So you know, you feel lucky,
but you're all you're a victim. It's not normal to
have that happen. Yes, this, you know, I don't think
anybody would would scoff at me referring to this this
man in his story, the manager of this place, as
a victim. He is, but it's hard for him to
process that. What do you mean victim. I'm alive, others
are not. And and in the randomness in everyday life
(09:02):
that could lead to you being somebody that is dead
or somebody that lives through things. It's just chilling. And
uh so, I again, everybody's different, but that exact quote
that I read, I can relate to, and it's not
you know, it's it's not normal for most and it
is something that will will will leave an effect on you.
(09:25):
But here's to hoping that it doesn't leave an effect
on this this individual. That is a real issue, but
you just never know. So we'll continue to hear more
from people that survived, We'll hear more from people who
know those that that did not make it. And it's
uh just a tragic situation all the way around. But
as of right now, no new updates this morning from
(09:45):
last night, a total of twelve that have lost their lives,
including one one young child, and there are many that
are still fighting for their life that were that were injured.
And then there's still many that were that that are
currently unaccounted for. I believe it's u and in fact,
I'll double check the numbers here on the other side
because I don't want to give out any misinformation, but
still a situation to follow as far as just updates
(10:08):
on recovering victims and maybe learning that others are able
to pull out of critical condition to be stable. So
again we'll keep you updated as best we can right
here at news Radio eight forty whas. It's the final
few minutes for us here at news Radio eight forty whas.
Then we're going to hand it off to Tony and Dwight,
who are live at the Exposition Center. Is that right,
(10:30):
John Alden, I've been told is a convention center. A
convention center, so this is a mystery. I'm intrigued as
to where the fellas are, but they'll be with you
here on these airwaves at eight forty whs in just
a matter of minutes. But been a quiet morning as
far as updates on the situation from Tuesday, But that
doesn't mean we haven't spent the majority of the show
talking about the aftermath. And we still don't know the
(10:54):
total number of victims that this tragic plane crash is
going to take, but it's expected to be more than
the current number, which is twelve. And there's still many
that are that are injured, and there's many that that
are that are unaccounted for, which at this at this stage,
that's just a frightening and horrific thing to to to
imagine as somebody that is looking for a loved one,
(11:16):
a friend that is unaccounted for that you know or
maybe believe might have been in that area. So the NTSD,
the NTSB, they'll have their first day of full investigation
today taking place probably as we speak. So again, this
will be something we continue to cover and give you
the latest information as it becomes available. But it may
(11:36):
not be a constant thing, right, It's going to probably
trickle out over time and when it comes to how
long that you have folks on the scene working in
some form or fashion, rather be NTSB or maybe it's
just first responders that are still helping kind of rummage
through the the the aftermath and find potential victims. I mean,
it's just this is probably going to be something that's
(11:59):
on the radar for us for quite some time, wouldn't
you say, John.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Yes, it will, and it'll it'll it'll come in waves,
it'll it'll surge a little bit going forward and die
down a little bit and then as there's a major development,
say some some revelation from the black boxes, or a
find on the the what's left of the aircraft fuselage
itself that might have been a cause, or if they
examined that engine they found, then it'll ramp back up
a little bit and we'll we'll talk about it again
(12:23):
and remind everybody what happened. Then it'll die back down,
and then the final reports will come out, and then
if there's any I don't even like to think about this,
if there's any litigation from anybody tied to this, you
know that's coming. Just the reality of life these days.
There's going to be litigation coming with this.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
Another report on that is that's another one of the
layers to this that I hadn't even thought about. But
it would almost be foolish to assume there won't be
some level of that with this, And that's just what
that's just what comes with with these types of situations.
So again, just to just just not that anybody hasn't
been everybody's different, But I was going to say, not
(12:59):
that anybody hasn't already realized just how serious of a
situation this is. But when you do hear from those
that are looking for loved ones, that are unaccounted for
those that were able to survive a very scary situation,
and maybe some people that were with them at the
time didn't survive. That just makes this so much more real.
But again not dak like we haven't thought it. But
(13:20):
there's just certain things you don't that are going to
hit you in a way that you don't know until
it happens. And some of the stories we've shared this
morning about those that are looking for loved ones or
those that did survive those or even just those that
were able to look at the scene a day after
rather that be our local leaders or business owners who
have businesses in that area. There's all kinds of different
(13:42):
layers to just making this seem more real and the
realization of how tragic it is. I don't think it's
it's recency bias or an exaggeration to say this is
something that we'll remember for a long time around here.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
One thing that I noticed two different people have said,
the mayor and the helicopter pilot for WLK why the
Tearing Mind interviewed that saw the wreckage from the air.
They both said almost the identical same thing. It's unlike
anything they've ever seen and it's something they never want
to see again.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
Yeah, that's not a coincidence that that that was echoed
by those who who've probably already in their position, seen
some unthinkable things. This is one that stands out in
a bad way. So you know, we'll keep you updated
right here throughout the day News Radio eight forty whas.
Thank you all for us sticking with us throughout our
coverage here. Certainly appreciate you, and you're in good hands.
(14:29):
We're gonna hand it off to Tony and Dwight. They're
coming your way next right here on News Radio eight
forty whas.
