Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's good to be joined as we are too infrequently
by Nebraska third District Congressman Adrian Smith. Adrian, good morning,
Good morning, Great Tom making the rounds. I'm making the rounds.
Thank you for you know, fitting me in between political Yeah.
I feel like the lads were lined up clear out
the door. I had to cut the line. That is
the truth. But year list is over.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
We're all gonna hate both Don Bacon and Tony Vargas
well Dan Osborne and Don Osbourne and Debfish.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Uh so what but your way out of the third District?
What brings you to town?

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Well, the third District's not far from here, that's true anymore. Yeah,
Blair Nebraska City, but eighty of Nebraska's ninety three counties
both Blair's in the third district.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Yeah, it's unbelievable. Lord, eighty counties. Wow, how do you
manage that? You got planning to get around when you're
in the state.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Or once in a while. We do that, but only
as necessary. But I've got a great team of staff
who helps me cover the bases and puts together a
schedule where we can be very productive. So we've had
a lot of meetings this week around the third disc
being able to talk to people where they are.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Yeah, what's the most important to your people? It's an
agricultural district, largely farmers and ranchers. Is it all that
or what's most important to them in the election?

Speaker 3 (01:13):
I remind my colleagues that overall, when you look at
the federal governments reach into the third district, the most
frequent request of third district constituents would be some form
of please leave me alone. And you know they want
you know, farmers and ag producers, ranchers, they want to

(01:33):
do their job. Yes, we do need a farm bill.
We mainly need the farm bill for crop insurance. You
know that farmers pay a premium into that program, and
that that's probably the most important component of the farm
bill and one of the least costly, incidentally, but we
need to get that done.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
I understand this thing is really bloated as farm bill. Yeah, trillion.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
Eighty of the cost of the farm bill is the
nutrition title with food stamps. It's not benefits. And of
course we want to help folks in need, and we
want to do it efficiently, and we you know, push
back on the fraud and eliminate prevent the fraud. In
the first place, rather than trying to chase it down later.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
How's that going. That's a big deal, right, Well.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
The farm bill is out of the House agg Committee,
awaiting a full House vote. On the Senate side. Senator
Stabnow from Michigan. You know she's retiring. I thought that
might get her to be more willing to compromise and
so forth. That doesn't seem to be the case. She's
I think conservation issues of the federal government telling farmers
how to farm seem to be a higher priority.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
For Yeah, that's an agricultural state too. There's a lot
of agriculture in Michigan. How come you're not somebody surrogate?

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Well, I am helping candidates around around the country this cycle,
and certainly here Nebraska to traveling my district as well.
I'm excited about the candidates we have around the country
tree and their various perspectives that they bring. I'm excited,
and I think the election is going to be a
good night for Repubble.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
So we're going to see you in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
I've done a little bit of that.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, when are you going to be chairman of Houseways
and Means, because that's real power. Well, that could really
help Nebraska.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
Well as a as a member of that committee now
for a little while, I am grateful to have the
opportunity to represent Nebraska's on the committee, whether it's you know,
writing the tax bill in twenty seventeen with my Ways
and Means colleagues. And what's really really cool about that
is seeing how great it's been for the economy and
to really be in the trenches there about opportunity. I

(03:42):
visited a site in Minden, Midwest meat market. They moved
from Franklin. They build a new building at Minden, what
two three years ago. It's not big enough. They have
expanded and now they're going to add even more square
footage because they're going to have a research and development kitchen.
Because they've found that there is great opportunity. And I

(04:03):
believe that they have benefited greatly because of our tax policy.
And this is the little guy, little guy who's getting
a little getting a little bigger because he can be
more Adrian.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
That's only been good for billionaires on Wall Street. You
must not have been listening to You're not listening to
the campaign. I want to ask you there's one interesting
state wide race when it comes to Canadas. I'm not
talking about the ballid issues, and that's Deb Fisher and
Dan Osborne. And he has enormous Democrat dark money coming
in from out of state, very well produced ads attacking

(04:35):
Deb Fisher. You hear them in every break here, You
see him on every break on TV. How close do
you think this one might be?

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Well, I think it was closer a few weeks back.
When you look, you know, from what I've I've been
noticing and from you know, seeing various numbers, but also
hearing folks on the street that Deb's in a very
strong place and she's worked hard. And you know, it's
one thing for me to say it's great to work
with her, but I see her productivity for off at

(05:04):
Air Force Base, on the Armed Services Committee, of Public
Lands issues, just various various issues that are important to
agriculture and producers themselves, as you know, small towns, large larger,
larger communities as well. Dead Fisher works hard and I'm
glad to be all in for her. I think it's
a very interesting that her opponent, you know, realizes probably

(05:28):
that he can't really run as a Democrat because out
in the third District and even elsewhere across Nebraska that
that doesn't work so well anymore when you look back
at how handily dead Fisher beat Bob Carey not that long.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Yeah, but it is pretty transparent that he is right right,
you know, Well, she's got some effective ads on.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Yeah, they've unearthed some recorded comments of his that have
been really effective and advertising about given social security and
given stuff and a pathway to citizenship for illegals that's
probably not very well received out there, that's correct, And
they're talking about how he's gonna obviously caut us with Democrats.
He's not a reliable Republican independent who is? But why

(06:08):
is it that the Pete Ricketts Preston Love race hasn't
been closer given the conditions of the Dan Osborne deb
Fisher race.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
I think the Democratic power structure decided that they yeah
behind dan Osborne rather than Preston Love. I think that
that invites a lot of questions of why. But you know,
I just think it it's I shake my head when
I see some of these ads, you know, saying independent, Well, yeah,
Bernie Sanders claims to be independent too.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
How much? And we've got to run here. But how
much a majority, assuming that the Republicans can expand their
House majority, would it take to resurrect and then they'd
have to get the Senate to would it take to
resurrect HR two? If you want to really do something
about immigration.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Well we we could. We did HR two with a
narrajority in the House, and I think we could do
that next week if we wanted to.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
But you need to send and if Trump is elected
then it'll happen anyway because he'll reinstate those executive orders. Adrian,
great to see you always, Thank you for coming.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Have a great rest of the political season and beyond
we'll do our best.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
We only have thirty seconds between ads.
